23rd Annual San Diego Latino Film Festival

WELCOME

BIENVENIDO Welcome to the 23RD Annual San Diego Latino Film Festival! In the news and always in our awareness is the severe lack of diversity in Hollywood, and the fact that no actors of color have been nominated for Oscars two years in a row. Such myopia toward minorities needs to be called out in our social arenas and proactively mitigated. Actors of color, and in our festival, namely Latinos, deserve to be celebrated in mainstream film and entertainment. As the Founder of the San Diego Latino Film Festival, I am saddened by recent events, but at the same time hopeful that the festival brings us together to fight for justice and equality. The annual San Diego Latino Film Festival has fought for 23 years, and continues be an advocate for equality in film and media during our film festival and throughout the year via our youth, teen and adult digital media educational programs. In addition, during the last three years, we’ve been fortunate to establish our own independent movie theater The Digital Gym CINEMA North Park, a daily showcase of the best in independent and foreign cinema. Despite ongoing divisive national political rhetoric, we feel that our film festival continues to serve as an excellent platform to facilitate more positive, engaging dialogue in ways that are more constructive to solutionbased thought. Over the next 11 days, we hope you will enjoy the incredible selection of movies our team has put together for you. From thoughtprovoking documentaries such as Un tango mås and Tras Nazarín to awardwinning narrative features such as The Clan and Eva no duerme, please take this opportunity to celebrate Latino Cinema and all the wonderful filmmakers and actors that make it happen. I invite you to join us in reshaping the social and artistic fabric of our region to reflect and celebrate la cultura; our quality of life and our commitment to youth and future filmmakers. Nos vemos en el cine and I look forward to working together to promote and advance more Latino filmmakers and actors in front of and behind the cameras! Sincerely,

Ethan van Thillo Founder / Executive Director

YOUTH VISIONS 3/19 / 2:00 / S1

The Media Arts Center San Diego presents a collection of youth produced films from young filmmakers; representing a growing population of young people who’ve found that their medium of expression lies in telling stories through film. This handpicked selection of short films feature both fictional and non-fiction pieces; produced by filmmakers of varying experience levels, and addressing a range of topics such as youth homelessness, immigration, LGBT and more!

The Bridge (8 min) By: Outside the Lens

What Day is Today? (12 min) By: Rodolfo Pimenta

It was produced during Outside the Lens' cross-cultural immersion at the Mediterranean Film Festival in Bosnia Herzegovina, where students from both countries worked together to write, film, and edit a collaborative short film. Their narrative came to life on screen as a young American girl visiting her cousin in a foreign country goes on an awkward blind date with her cousin's friend.

Animated documentary short film made by the youth of the Portuguese city of Montemor-o- Novo. Over a two month period, these youngsters took a trip down memory lane to collect the testimonies of an older generation who witnessed 40 years of dictatorship and another 40 of fable-like democracy only to find out that the struggle for basic human rights has become, over the years, a delusion fueled by controls over currency and high consumption rates that numb and manipulate today’s society.

Ecosystem (7 min) By: Barbara Soto An analogy between the city of Buenos Aires and a garden.
