W EL CO ME BIE N V EN I DO ¡Bienvenidos!

Dear Film Enthusiasts, On behalf of Media Arts Center San Diego, thank you for supporting our nonprofit’s 26th Annual San Diego Latino Film Festival.

That you are reading this letter, shows you understand the importance of Latino representation in front of and behind the cameras; as well as combating the negative stereotypes we see daily in mainstream Hollywood and news outlets. However, viewing 170+ movies at this year’s festival is unfortunately not enough. We are all needed to promote these great works, and engage with the wider community about the critical issues addressed in them. Take these films to local schools and organizations. Tell local policy makers about the realities of those in need in our communities.

For many of you, this catalogue is your initial introduction to the superlative official selection the San Diego Latino Film Festival’s curatorial team has put together for the 26th edition. I encourage you to indulge your most decadent cinephilic desires as you flip the pages of this book-- make plans to watch everything your heart desires. Better yet, challenge yourself to see something unexpected and completely out-of-left-field. A film festival, like the art of cinema itself, is not monolithic in its powers. Its purpose is to give you familiar offerings while still pushing you as a viewer to appreciate varying modalities, sensibilities, and genres.

I am confident that through the power of cinema and storytelling, we can continue to break down walls and create a more just and equitable world for future generations.

More importantly, one of its most significant functions is to facilitate your appreciation of film as a valid artform, and not just justify a film’s merit by its happy ending (spoiler alert: not all of our films have these). The power of cinema will be on full display during the 11-days of our beloved film festival, offering you many perspectives and insights into the Latino experience. I hope you come out of this experience enriched, challenged, and even bigger fans of cinema than ever before.

Nos vemos en el cine,

Sincerely,

Ethan van Thillo, Executive Director/Founder

Moisés Esparza, Exhibitions Manager

Once again, let’s applaud all of the participating filmmakers and actors; and the incredible staff and volunteers who make the film festival a reality each year.

What if there is only one way to survive and give your family a better future? What if that way is one of the toughest ways to make a living on the other side of the world, in Thailand, thousands miles away from your home country, Brazil, without knowing when you can come back home? Leo, a 30 year old Muay Thai trainer, finds himself in this situation, as he tries to pursue a dream he has now given up on and regain his “hungry eyes”, while trying to assimilate culturally to the place he now calls home in order to provide for himself and his family in Brazil.

A collection of films highlighting the lives of those who sacrifice everything to achieve glory in the fighting ring, ranging from lucha libre luchadores to boxers looking for another shot at redemption and to protect their legacy. CASSANDRO, THE EXOTICO! 3/14 10:05 S2 | 3/15 4:30 S9 | 3/16 5:50 DGC Dir. Marie Losier

(France, 73 min., 2018, English; Spanish w/ English subtitles, Documentary)

This stirring feature portrait of lucha libre star Cassandro in his waning years in the ring is less a swan song than a meteor shower rendered in Technicolor. Famed as much for his flamboyant drag and sky-high pompadour as for his show-stopping kicks and flips, Cassandro’s trailblazing ascent as one the industry’s first openly gay wrestlers has resonated internationally for a quarter century. Marie Losier captures the moving, at times humorous, and always colorful dualities of this legendary figure with her talent for forging intimacy with a subject while celebrating his individuality broadly. UN M UNDO EX TR A Ñ O SH O WC A SE

Travel with us to dimensions that exist beyond the confines of our reality. Behold the dark fantasies that only fierce imaginations can create! Behold a corrupt colonia, a terrifying murder mystery, and a young woman looking to avenge the disappearance of her father! Don’t come alone!

sinister enough, the narrator is an analog of Schäfer himself, lending a nihilistic pall to the entire production. The animators chose this project as a way to reconcile a distressing part of Chilean history by projecting it through the fairy tale aesthetic. The result is possibly one of the most interesting cinematic experiences of the festival.

If you are looking for a truly unique experience this year, look no further than the Chilean bizarro film La Casa Lobo. If that weren’t

Living in a modest shack in the Cuban countryside, thirteen year old Lili and her mother appear trapped in a meagre, suffocating existence by her domineering father, Eduardo. His sudden absence should represent a new freedom for the girl and her mother, but Lili is distraught, and we come to discover just how strong the influence of this monstrous man is over his family. In desperation at losing Eduardo, Lili carries out a ritual taught to her by a spiritualist to help bring him back, leading Lili to uncover a disturbing truth about her father’s disappearance. MUERE, MONSTRUO, MUERE 3/14 9:30 DGC | 3/23 10:00 S1 Dir. Alejandro Fadel (Argentina / Chile / France, 105 min., 2018, Spanish w/ English Subtitles, Horror)

After beginning with one of the most original moments of shock of the year, this horror film quickly presents its vision of the Mendoza region of Argentina as a moody hellscape, full of ethereal, nightmare images. Director Alejandro Fadel is fond of letting the camera linger, allowing us to fully explore the night side of such a beautiful landscape. Part murder mystery, part metaphysical head trip, part creature feature, and all darkness, “Muere, Monstruo, Muere” is one of those films that seek to have us peer into the void, and wonder what monsters may stare back.

GO AND BACK (Dir. Yolanda Morales & Jorge Nieto)

Two events are recorded as the Migrant Caravan is underway. First, the atmosphere and feelings of the Caravan members living in Tijuana and desiring to reach the United States; and next, the suspense in which the returnees have returned. BORDERS (Dir Zoé Liénard)

He is unapologetic in his commitment to create change for kids, no matter the odds. When a glowing front page New York Times article catapults him into the spotlight, he is recruited and accepts a promotion to use his famed 'out of the box' and transformative practices to save a corrupt and divided suburban school district. But the political challenges there may simply be too great, even for the infallible Santana.

DACA (Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals) has provided nearly 800,000 undocumented young people a chance to work legally, go to college, start businesses, and pursue the “American Dream.” Waking Dream follows the unfolding fate of six of these young people as they fight for legal status in the U.S., struggle with the deportation of family members, and pursue their dreams in a country that is trying harder and harder to push them out. They know their fate must go in one direction and they are fighting for their future in America. WIÑAYPACHA 3/14 4:15 S10 | 3/18 4:45 S2 | 3/22 4:45 S10 | 3/24 12:50 DGC Dir. (Mexico / USA, 58 min., 2018, English; Spanish w/ English subtitles, Immigration Documentary)

Woven from footage collected over a quarter of a century, “Rocio” is the story of a mother's love and the American Dream. When Rocío, doting mother of three, is suddenly diagnosed with terminal kidney cancer, her son Dario takes a leave of absence from Harvard College to come home and take care of her. Their battle against the disease leads them into the world of alternative medicine, where they find hope shimmering at a clinic across the border. The catch: Pursuing this last chance at survival might mean giving up everything they've ever worked for.

It delves into the lives of people who work behind the scenes of the premium California wine industry, during one of the most dramatic grape harvests in recent memory. The film follows the stories of Mexican-American winemakers and migrant workers who are essential to the wine business, yet are rarely recognized for their contributions. Is the story of celebrated professor Víctor Ríos, a Mexican immigrant, once gang-affiliated teen, who radically changes his life with the help of his mentor Martín Flores. The film weaves together compelling twenty-year-old archival footage of Víctor and his mentor Martín along with compelling contemporary footage of the two men today, as they work together to change the lives of other students on the margins of failure. Referred to as “push-outs,” these students have been suspended or expelled from school and, unfortunately, some are ultimately pushed into the criminal justice system.

Remaining optimistic and staying driven in the face of adversity is difficult for many. However, there is always something to fight for, even when things look hopeless. World-renowned luchador Rey Misterio has faced much difficulty in becoming a legend in the world of professional wrestling. Despite tough times in his career and in his personal life, he has always remained focused on the important things in life. “Despite everything one has to deal with as a wrestler, my favorite thing about performing has always been bringing to life the character of Rey Misterio, which is much beloved by many,” he said to La Prensa San Diego during an interview. Rey Misterio, whose birth name is Miguel Angel Lopez, claims he was destined to become a wrestler. His love for lucha libre, or Mexican-style professional wrestling, began at an early age, when a group of kids from his neighborhood went to a lucha show in his hometown of Tijuana. Years later, Lopez became trained by figures within the local wrestling scene, such as “Chamaco” Martinez, El Marinero, and Maravilla Blanca. Los padres de 11 niños hicieron lo propio, aunque contrario al primer grupo, éstos continúan en el país, según detalla el informe. here’s a waiting room inside the South Coast Plaza Macy’s personal stylist department, and on one of the dressing rooms there’s a sign that reads “Ken’s appointment.” La Prensa San Diego’s art director Tracy Powell spent the early afternoon with Kenneth Marshall, Macy’s My Stylist, to find the right clothes for his needs. Dressed in a suit with a bowtie, Marshall says his interest in fashion began at an early age. He specifically recalls a childhood memory of his mother getting his clothes tailor-made. “It’s just always been in my blood,” he says. Marshall started working for Macy’s in 2004 and began in the women's shoe department where he worked his way up to becoming a stylist for both men and women. A sense of fashion is certainly needed in this kind of career, but a passion for styling is also a big factor. Marshall takes it to another level with Macy’s by working with local nonprofits and churches on educational seminars on dressing for success. And while styling can be intimidating for some people, it’s really a matter of having a little bit of help. So, how can people go about finding a stylist? Well, Marshall recommends Macy’s complementary stylist service because there is no pressure to purchase items. Macy’s personal stylist department, My Stylist, is available in most stores and clients can book an appointment online or call. And, what should people look to learn from their stylist experience? Marshall says it depends on what the individual is looking for in their wardrobe because some people are concerned with sizing and others are simply looking for an outfit for a special occasion. Marshall picked out three outfits for Powell, two of which are definitely outfits

BEST SHOPPING EXPERIENCE EVER. SO MUCH FUN AND RIGHT ON POINT WITH WHAT I WAS LOOKING FOR.

that he would have never picked out himself, he shares. “ I have always considered myself to be fashionable person with a distinctive style and color scheme,” says Powell. “Ken took me out of my comfort zone and chose items I would normally pass up." Marshall says that’s a common reaction from people but in the end he always reminds clients to dress in what feels comfortable or most like themselves. “If you feel subconscious putting it on, you’re going to feel subconscious in it,” says Marshall, “so, just buy what you love.” Marshall selected outfits for Powell and even explained why sizing is important and how that can shape the overall look of the outfit. While most people think they have to splurge on something expensive, Marshall says the fit is what’s most important when it come to styling. “You find your fit, you find your suit,” says Marshall. “You can buy a $15,000 suit, but if it doesn’t drape on you properly, it’s just a suit.” To schedule an appointment with a personal stylist visit macys.com/mystylist or call 1-800-343-0121. In the end, La Prensa’s art director left with a better understanding of embracing his own style, while also keeping an open mind about trying new things. “I loved every outfit he choose for me. I am now forever a fan of My Stylist and now Ken is my personal stylist,” says Powell.

LA CASA LOBO / Dirs. Cristóbal León, Joaquin Cociña (Chile, 75 min., 2018, Spanish w/ English subtitles, Animation) This stop-motion animated feature takes the framework of a fairytale, with a quirky style, but warped by the real-life inspiration of Colonia Dignidad, the real life organization in Chile controlled by former Nazi Paul Schäfer. If that weren’t sinister enough, the narrator is an analog of Schäfer himself, lending a nihilistic pall to the entire production. The animators chose this project as a way to reconcile a distressing part of Chilean history by projecting it through the fairy tale aesthetic. The result is possibly one of the most interesting cinematic experiences of the festival. Un Mundo Extraño Showcase.
