VOZES Showcase

There are nearly 5 million persons of Central American descent in the United States and that number doubled in the last 10 years. Vozes gives voz to those who speak vos. It puts the oft-forgotten voices of Central American characters at the center stage. It portrays both the daily hardships and the wonders of ancestral lands by highlighting the works of Central American filmmakers, helping viewers move past the stereotypical media portrayals of a culture that is an increasingly important part of the American social fabric.

Set in El Salvador, a country with some of the most restrictive laws in the world, including the criminalization of those who experience miscarriages, this documentary tells the story of Teodora Vásquez, who was accused of murder when she suffered a stillbirth and was sentenced to thirty years in prison for aggravated homicide. At Ilopango Women’s Prison, she becomes the spokesperson for The Seventeen, a group of working-class women who were all incarcerated after having miscarriages., many of whom became pregnant after being sexually assaulted.
