The churches date back to the 12th or 13th century and were constructed under the aegis of King Lalibela, a leader of pious zeal. . These amazing edifices were not constructed as such, but were chipped out of solid rock with only hammers and chisels. As legend has it, angels worked along side his stonemasons for twenty-four years to complete the churches. Owing to the holiness and grandeur of these churches, worshippers from as far away as Jerusalem used to travel on foot on pilgrimage to Lalibela. Lalibela’s mountainous and undulating landscape is a beautiful backdrop for visiting these churches. Visits to Lalibela include guided tours of the 11 churches as well as trekking tours in the outskirts of the town.
