The Second Annual Black Excellence Gala

In Memory of Kathleen Daly ‘80 Saturday, February 21, 2015 Punch’s Alley & Alumnae Ballroom Wellesley College

Event Description Mission of Ethos Ethos was conceived in the back of a taxi in December 1966 by five students Karen Williamson ’69, Francille Rusan Wilson ’69, Alvia Wardlaw ’69, Yvonne Smith Madlock ’70, and Ivy Thomas Riley ’70 - after returning from a conference on Black student issues held at Columbia University. They realized that there were no existing organizations on Wellesley’s campus that adequately supported and represented their needs. Ethos, which is defined as “the pervasive characteristic that distinguishes a group of culture,” was formed to address these concerns. Our mission is to provide political, social, and academic support to students of African Descent at Wellesley College. We seek to create a supportive environment where members feel empowered to reach their full potential at Wellesley College.

Purpose of the Black Excellence Gala The Black Excellence Gala is Ethos’ signature fundraiser. The event recognizes the accomplishments of community members while also honoring the life of Kathleen Daly ’80 who died of an asthma attack during her senior year at Wellesley College. Funds raised through gala ticket sales, the Kathleen Daly online fundraiser, advertisements, raffle, and various donors will support the educational expenses of two current students. In addition, partial proceeds will be donated to the Allergy and Asthma Foundation in Daly’s memory. A masquerade theme was selected for this year’s gala. Participants are encouraged to don masks to symbolize the metaphorical veil that people of African descent wear in a form of double consciousness. W.E.B. Du Bois uses the term double consciousness to describe the difficulty that African Americans face to unify their Black and American identities in a country that racially rejects them.

One Love. One Ethos. One Destiny. 2

Reflections of Kathleen Daly ‘80

“ Kathleen Daly ‘80 is pictured on the right

“Kathy was a sweetheart. Kathy always looked happy to see you coming down the hall or around the corner. She was just a very down-to-earth girl from Philly who enjoyed and was interested in other people. Asthma had been a lifelong challenge: She didn’t start sophomore year with us but she came back and rejoined our ‘new dorms’ community. I think we were all relieved and so happy she was back. And for two years everything went according to plan. Away from campus, Kathy was a beloved and loving daughter and and an adored and adoring big sister to Roberta who was 6 or 7 years younger and enjoyed coming to visit Kathy on campus. And when Kathy left Wellesley in December 1979 she, like all of us, was looking forward to that last semester with a sense of excitement.” -Ruth Goins ‘80 6

The Kathleen Daly Scholarship In 1983, Anne Simmons ’85 established the Kathleen Daly Scholarship in memory of Kathleen Daly '80, who died from an asthma attack during her senior year at Wellesley College. Two students of African descent who have demonstrated outstanding achievements in academics, leadership, and community service will be presented with the Kathleen Daly Scholarship at the Second Annual Black Excellence Gala. The Black community continues to need support on campus as black students make up only 6% of Wellesley College's student population. The Kathleen Daly Committee has successfully raised $2,000 through donations from the Kathleen Daly Fundraiser, an online fundraising campaign, program ads, ticket sales, and various donors and sponsors. Two deserving students of African descent will each receive a $1000 scholarship along with the Black Excellence Award.
