ow! The art work these days is sometimes overwhelming. It’s like an explosion of color and style. The cover we decided to go with this issue, made me think of George Lois of Esquire pushing the envelope on printed design. Andrew A. is an amazing artist and when I see his work it makes me think “AAA”! We are proud to share with you a small glimpse into his world. Along with Andrew A. we have a lot of talented artists like Frankie Curran who is the winner of the “Who’s Next Gallery”. We received such great feedback from our readers about his artwork that won 1st place in the votes. If you are an artist in the local area or know someone who is, please have them contact us. We accept artwork from all ages. Maybe someone you know will be the next winner and receive a two page spread to display their artwork. We would also like to thank our advertisers. With your continued support we are able to bring our community a quality magazine filled with beautiful artwork. Time and time again we are reminded of our struggling economy, yet our arts world still strives. With more events going on each month, more concerts and more venues opening up, allowing us to spread our artistic wings even further into our community enabling us to not only network with other areas of our community, but also other social networks that would never have been available before. Check out page 20. The WeMerge Release Party was awesome! There are some images on the page and a great article written by Allisha Goncalves with more images on our facebook page. We also meet a very talented artist one night in Miami. His name is Etienne Class and is on the following page of the release party. His work is the kind of stuff people want in their homes. We also have our WeMerge Graffiti page. Which never fails to show some of the most talented work from the area as well as visiting artists. Next to the Graffiti Page is a an exceptional photographer and person. Digi Dave, which we here at WeMerge have coined him as “A True Clicksta”. He is able to capture some of the most impressive images as well as snap some of the most hard to get shots. Making him a very sought after photographer. We would like to give recognition to all the hustlers out there trying to make it all happen in the streets. Not many are still out there grinding on the pavement in this digital world. With that said I think you should check out “D Bomb” on page 19. He sold me a CD on the corner of Hollywood Blvd. and 441, which reminded me of the intense grind of a true hustler. Learn from “D Bomb” “Support the scene, or there will be no scene to support.” Thanks,

miami heat an art form like no other

As we extend WeMerge’s reach further into Dade County, it has become clear that art is not the only thing that Miami gets excited about. While we have always been involved with the emerging music scene, one area we have not touched on at all is sports. While many of you may object to WeMerge covering sports in any form, you can thank artist Danielle Veit for helping us to bridge the gap with these incredible paintings of the Miami Heat’s Dwyane Wade, Lebron James and Chris Bosh. While most will accept actors and musicians as artists, many turn up their noses at the thought of considering a sports performance a form of artistic expression. If you are going to consider the photographers on the sideline taking pictures and the DJ in his booth playing tunes to hype the fans artists, then it would be a disservice not to give the true art form its due. These incredibly gifted athletes/artists, hone their skills from an early age and, putting monetary gain aside, their main intent is to impress and excite their fans. Miami’s Big Three of Wade, Bosh and Lebron are capable of doing things with their bodies and the ball that widen eyes and bring people to their feet in thunderous roars on a nightly basis. We can almost guarantee, even if your not a big sports fan, that you have at some point heard the following, “Did you see what Lebron did last night? It was the most incredible thing I’ve ever seen!!” We understand he didn’t paint or draw or sculpt or even sing, but assure you it was an incredible work of art. It is how these athletes express their frustrations and elations and put them on center stage for the entire world to see. Like any artist, it is what they want to be remembered for. Their athletic career is their portfolio that they hope will stand the test of time. Every performance is another unique work of art in their collection. Each spectacular dunk or pass is appreciated and admired as such. If you don’t see the parallels, you may be trying too hard not to. BASKETBALL IS ART. Show it some love. t 8

Ruen Returns To His Reign King of the Miami party scene, DJ Ruen returned last Tuesday after his five-stop tour of NYC’s most highprofile venues. Ruen can be seen spinning alongside some of the biggest names in the industry, and has shared the booth with such stars as Alesso, Laid Back Luke, Nero and Sidney Samson. If there’s an outrageous bash going on in South Beach, Ruen is likely to be on deck. OFM Talent, Ruen’s exclusive booking agency, manages the constant influx of requests to book him at the most prestigious venues on South Beach, such as LIV, Arkadia, Mokai, Mynt and Bamboo. Celebrity A-listers flock to see him perform at the world-renowned Favela Beach Party, located at Wall, the W Hotel’s famed nightclub. Undoubtedly, Ruen’s electrifying sets are the driving force behind this infamous party. The wildly popular and trendsetting fashion blog, Refinery29, has recently featured Ruen as one of Miami’s hottest DJ’s. After Ruen secured his position as a top DJ in Miami, clubs across the nation are now hoping to bring the relentless beats of the Miami party scene to their cities by snagging a booking with Ruen. On his most recent tour, Ruen turned NYC upside down as he slammed every hotspot with his unstoppable energy. After performing at NY’s top venues - SL, Goldbar, One Oak, Catch and PhD - Ruen continues his reign over Miami nightlife with a full schedule of bookings. Most notable is his anticipated performance alongside Lil Jon at LIV, where he has a residency on Wednesday nights.

South Florida MC, Saheed, and veteran turntablist, DJ Heron, have done something all MC’s and DJ’s wish they ccould do...THEY TOOK OVER THE RADIO! This dynamic MC/DJ duo have created their own radio show, Re-Up Radio, and have been taking the internet radio industry by storm. Broadcasting live from their new, high tech recording studio turned state-ofthe-art radio station, Re-Up Radio plays one thing: Hip-Hop. From the 80’s, 90’s, right now and, most importantly, tomorrow. Nothing like you might hear on your local AM/FM frequencies, these guys play underground music, new and old, that may have got little-to-no spins on radio until now. With hopes of eventually taking their talents to XM/SIRIUS Satellite radio, their main objective is staying true to their roots in REAL hip-hop.

They broadcast live on www.reupradio.com and the show can be streamed live on all smartphone devices. They consistently show tremendous amounts of love and support for the local hip-hop community by welcoming into the studio and giving airplay to numerous local artists, as well as having National acts regularly featured on the show and ticket giveaways when those artists grace South Florida stages with their presence. Speaking of gracing stages, if you haven’t had the pleasure to catch Saheed and Heron rocking the stage with the likes of Action Bronson, Ras Kass, Dead Prez, Raekwon and Statik Selektah just to name a few, then obviously you have to get out and experience the South Florida hip-hop scene in a hurry. Check out Re-Up Radio every Wednesday from 8-10pm on www.reupradio.com with Host Saheed and DJ Heron. t

Whos Next Gallery Winner I never wanted to be an artist. I wanted to help people and become a forensic scientist. My art was just a hobby that everyone said I needed to take more seriously. If not for an unlikely scholarship to The Art Institute of Ft Lauderdale, I have no idea where I would be today. It was a total blessing in disguise. I’ve been through a lot in my life that has fueled my artwork and sent me in the direction I have gone with it. I started doing portraits after my aunts death. I was dealing with a lot of rough feelings and working towards immortalizing her was something that was very important to me. I have a lot to thank her for and her spirit propels me forward. An essay on her being my main artistic inspiration was what helped me earn that life changing scholarship to AIFL. My loving family and my home town of Staten Island remain a constant source of inspiration for me. People should appreciate where they came from. It’s what makes them who they are. I try and represent the love and respect I have for my family and friends in all of my work. They’ve supported me through all of my creative endeavors. My tattooing, journey through art school, and now my painting.

My artwork is a look into the deeper meaning of things. Many people see portrait art and label it boring or uncreative. Some claim that I am less of an artist with no original concept. Fact of the matter is, I don’t care much for what other people think. My portraits are a look into people’s souls. I paint people I admire, or that I find interesting or visually stimulating. I paint because it speaks to my soul. The mix of the spiritual, physical, and emotional aspects of my subjects is fascinating to me. My artwork is a deep pool into my mind; you need to look beyond the murky surface to see in clearly. Artwork is therapeutic, and that’s what I want to do. Teach this incredible form of artistic therapy to others who share the same passion as me. How to express themselves and not worry so much about the outcome. t 12 Support the Scene or There Will Be No Scene To Support

hat’s the time? It’s time to get ILL!” When the Beastie Boys released this track in the 80’s, they certainly weren’t referring to the extremely rare form of throat cancer that claimed MCA’s life on May 4th, after an unpublicized three-year battle with the disease. MCA (Adam Nathaniel Yauch) co-founder of the Beastie Boys, the New York based trio of two rappers and a DJ, forever changed the demographic of Hip Hop culture. They were the first white rap crew to experience commercial success when their debut album, Licensed To Ill, was released in 1986. They not only altered the face of Hip Hop around the world, they integrated my elementary school playground. Young fans of all races and religions battled on the hot pavement, boombox in hand and cardboard on the floor, to the sounds of the Beasties. MCA’s voice was deep, raspy, funky and undeniably original. His rhyme patterns were punches right to your grill. In the early days, his code of dress was a cross between Run DMC and an unshaven Elvis. He seamlessly combined rock star and rap star, redefining the image of a rapper. Further, the group rerouted rap by adding live instrumentation and expanding the genre of samples. Later in his life, Yauch became a practicing Buddhist, which shaped his humanitarian efforts. He was a salient voice in the Tibetan Independence Movement, founding the Milarepa Fund, as well as organizing several benefit concerts in support of the cause, most notably the Tibetan Freedom Concert in 1996. MCA pushed the limits of film through his film production company, Oscilloscope Laboratories. His directorial alias, Nathaniel Hörnblowér, has been responsible for the majority of the Beasties always groundbreaking music videos and other unique films including Awesome, I Fuckin’ Shot That!, produced from footage shot by 50 cameras that were given to audience members at a live Beastie Boys concert. This type of incredibly innovative thinking typified MCA and earned him the status of a visionary artist. The Beasties fought for their right to maintain creative control of every record they ever put out. Seven platinum albums, the FIRST hip hop album to ever top the Billboard charts, over 40 million records sold and induction into The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame distinguish them over other rap groups. With an identity firmly rooted in the harmonious sound of the trio, the future of the group without the inimitable MCA remains to be seen. t 18 Support the Scene or There Will Be No Scene To Support

y music is my freedom. I view it as my way out. It’s how I’ll escape the trials and tribulations, the pain or modern existence. I know that sounds a little out there and esoteric in a way, but I never aspired to be another cog in the machine. Music started as my emotional release, but turned into a tool I could use to persevere.” Says the 27 year old Numonics as we meet in his Pompano Beach home. Over the past three years, Jonathan “Numonics” Rosenfeld has established himself as one of Florida’s premiere hip-hop producers. Known for his soulful signature sound, he has worked with a variety of artists including Feddie Gibbs, Termanology and Wrekonize. What has garnered the mossy attention for the South Florida resident has been his collaborative albums he has done with artists such as Co$$ and J Nics. Numonics has been featured for these projects by the likes of Complex, XXL and The Source as well as tastemaker websites such as 2Dopeboyz, NahRight and The Smoking Section.

He now embarks on the next step in his career by releasing eight new albums over the next 12 months. Starting in June, Numonics pairs back up with Co$$ for the duo’s LP “Genesis.” The 17 track album will feature a terrific supporting cast including Ras Kass, Planet Asia and Blu. Fresh off the heels of that release, Numonics’ politically themed album with Boston’s REKS “REBELutionary” will be released on Gracie Productions on July 24th. “The project with REKS is just so important to me. We live in interesting times and I feel there’s a responsibility to say something of meaning in the music. I feel he and I share the same vision and touch on some subjects that needed to be brought to light.” Says Numonics. With these two projects providing the foundation, the producer plans to release new projects with j57, Saheed, LMS, Dynas, J Nics and Gotham Green as well as an instrumental project. There’s no denying the work ethic and for that reason, the freedom that Numonics desires might just become a reality. Follow@Numonics - TheNuWorldOrder.com LastRightsInc.com t

Q&A DJ Smiley

Miami based DJ Smiley, has quickly established himself as one of North America’s most sought after and in-demand DJs. A genuine love & appreciation for several genres of music has allowed him to remain extremely versatile in his endeavors, consistently pleasing worldwide audiences along the way. Focused on bringing quality music to the masses, Smiley has played A-list events at world-renowned venues, released award winning mixtape collaborations, and worked alongside some of today’s biggest & most influential music, lifestyle, fashion and entertainment brands. He has DJ’d events for the likes of Lady Gaga, Drake, Kim Kardashian, Busta Rhymes, Rihanna, Samuel L. Jackson, Justin Bieber, Lil’ Wayne, Lebron James, The Black Eyed Peas, MTV and is the Official DJ for the Florida Panthers. Now he brings his energy and excitement to the pages of WeMerge. We visited him at HW8 Creative Studios in Miami for this quick Q & A. We talked you up pretty good in our intro, but introduce yourself to the readers. Hi everyone. I’m DJ Smiley, an International DJ/producer whose music is an expression on how I view my life. With a very high energy, feel good positive vibe. I take people on a journey with my electronic music. I take them on an auditory roller coaster, leading them where they want to go with my music and keeping them dancing. Just like the photographers, tattoo artists and graphic designers that are featured in this great magazine, I believe it is a true art form. Describe your live show and where the name “Take Flight” came from. I take partygoers on a musical journey with my mixes and my live performance. I have a state-of-the-art Party Robot who sprays CO2 on the fired up crowd to cool them down, and at the end of my show I spray champagne and give out a case of water to keep them happy and healthy all night. I hand out custom made glow-inthe-dark t-shirts and fully customized buttons from buttonrevolution.com. And courtesy of SX Liquors, I will be distributing my mixtape at all my shows for free as well. I have performed this visual and auditory spectacle in the bright lights of Las Vegas, the penthouses of New York, the desert in Arizona and the laid back paradise that are the Caribbean Islands. As I “Take Flight” on my journey around the world sharing my vision, I invite the partygoers to “Take Flight” with me and my music.

Do you appreciate hard work, dedication and genuinely believing in yourself? Do you respect someone who is doing whatever it takes to reach his personal and professional goals? I thought so. Let WeMerge introduce you to Chicago born and raised and now South Florida based MC, DBomb. Talent, confidence and energy exude from the gifted MC, writer and entrepreneur. He earned his triple threat status, honing his craft in the recently discovered gold mine of Chicago hiphop. The precision of his lyrics, combined with his powerful stage presence, is a vital part of his persona, but not what defines him. He strives to be a positive representative of his hometown hip-hop scene, but above all a “hustler” of the best kind. He sells himself and his music with his “Hustle Rap” movement and his online record label, DBomb Digital. His goal with the label is to connect artists, producers, authors and entrepreneurs from all over the world, make their valuable products available online, and give them the confidence that they can succeed in this very tough industry, and let them know there are people out there who support them. Just as WeMerge supports our emerging artistic community. What separates DBomb and his partner in rhyme and hustle, Prob Saprano from other independent artists of any genre is, their unique approach and literal attack of the consumer market. Through their aptly named “Hustle Rap” campaign, they literally have sold tens of thousands of their CDs to people on the streets and in their cars at red lights who have never heard their music and most likely never heard of them at all! If this degree of hustle doesn’t impress you, then I don’t know what will. No matter what walk of life or what industry you are in, the skills that DBomb brings to the table seem invaluable and we at WeMerge want to learn more. Stay tuned. t
