July 2012 ENGINEERING, TECHONLOGY AND MARITIME
IN THIS ISSUE
Graduation in Liverpool and Shanghai In July graduation ceremonies were held in Liverpool and in Shanghai. The Liverpool ceremony included the presentation of a University award to the team leading the delivery of innovative teaching of automotive engineering through the LJMU Racing Team. Graduates included the first cohort from the BSc Audio and Music Production and a group from the UAE’s Federal Authority Nuclear Regulation, who received awards from the MSc Risk and Safety Management course. The second ceremony was for our engineering students based in Shanghai. Over 90 graduates received their awards from the Vice Chancellor Professor Weatherill.
It is now six years since the start of the collaboration with SBC-USST (Sino British College). In that period we have successfully established the BEng Manufacturing Systems Engineering and BEng Industrial Electronics and Control programmes in China. This year we delivered a final year to a cohort who chose to complete their course in the UK alongside students from manufacturing companies in the region. The team led by Dr Russell English have worked closely with colleagues in China to create a good student experience, and the programmes are great building block for the future. In 2012 two new routes will be offered Manufacturing Systems Engineering (with Energy Management), and Industrial Electronics and Control Engineering (with Computing).

Maritime exam success by Ewan Kirkbride
2011-12 has seen the arrival of LJMU’s third and fourth intake of Dip.HE Nautical Science students. Class numbers have steadily grown from an initial three in September 2010 to fifteen in January 2012. Applications and enquiries indicate that the next intake will exceed twenty as past students of the Cert.HE programme return to Liverpool for another productive experience in their pursuit of professional progression within the globalised merchant shipping industry. In addition to a gruelling programme of internal assessment to gain the DipHE our students face the additional task of preparing for two further written papers and a face to face oral examination by Surveyors from the Maritime Coastguard Agency. With the minimum pass mark required being 60% for the written elements we are proud of the success achieved in the last round of exams. In which 90% achieved the required grade in Ship Stability and five of the ten obtained a Grade One pass.
Arab Maritime Academy by I Jenkinson The University signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Arab Academy for Science, Technology & Maritime Transport (AASTMT) in Egypt. AASTMT
This places these results well above the national average. Success in Navigation was 70%, on a par with the national average. The September 2011, intake of students have just completed their one on one, Orals examination with a Maritime & Coastguard Agency surveyor, and have again excelled with 7 of the 10 students achieving a pass on their first attempt.
The Liverpool Maritime Academy looks forward to building on these initial successes so as to become the first choice of study for prospective students in the years ahead.
was founded in 1972 as a Regional Institute for Maritime Transport, following a recommendation of the Arab League’s Transport Committee, and with United Nations Development Programme funding. AASTMT is partfunded by the Egyptian Ministry of Transport, United Nations and the Arab League. It is the most widely recognised maritime HEI in the MENA region and has trained a significant proportion of
the region’s senior maritime managers. The School has had long standing links with the Academy a number of their staff are currently undertaking PhD programmes and this MoU marks the beginning of greater collaboration in teaching and research..

Formula student 2012 By C

The LJMU Racing Team continues to move up the rankings. In the team’s third full season it climbed six places from last year to finish 12th out of 102 teams to become the second highest ranked UK team. The Silverstone event attracts engineering talent from university departments around the world to design and build their own single-seater racing car. This year’s entry was judged against tight specifications including engineering design, speed, endurance and environmental criteria. Highlights included: 5th place overall in the Skid Pad event, 12th place in the Endurance event and 17th place in the Sprint Event. The LJMU Racing Team attracts support from students on many different courses (not just engineering) to work in design, manufacture and media support. Edward Bond Team Manager said: ‘This was a great team effort and I’d like to thank everyone for working so hard to pull this off. Employers use participation in activities such as Formula Student to identify candidates for interview and I’d encourage students to join in if they are interested.’
Success in this competition is raising the university’s profile both nationally and internationally and demonstrates the quality of our graduates. The team is now based in the Vehicle Engineering Laboratory which was officially opened by Richard Else, Operations Director, Jaguar Land Rover (JLR), Halewood, in May this year. The Laboratory hosts the
new driving simulator, a model 401CR system supplied by Force Dynamics. This is used as a training platform for the Formula Student Team who model their vehicles and use the simulator to prepare for events. The team will also be competing at the Formula Student event in Spain later in the summer. For

Members of the public and alumni enjoyed the best in innovation from over 90 students from the School’s BSc Product Innovation and Development and BSc Computer Aided Design programmes. The Product Innovation Show evening was the second of its type and alumni took the opportunity to speak with the student exhibitors as they were guided through the displays. Amongst the projects on show were: user-centered tablet computer design; digital photo locket; sports agility trainer; UV therapy device; modern walking aid; multi-sensory speaker system; ski binding design; dietary cookware solution; passive speaker system; hygienic cutting board; drum kit fixing mechanism; sustainable garden furniture; modular playground equipment.
There was also a section that promoted the Schools latest industrial live development projects with Abingdon Music Research. Exhibiting subject areas covered product design, sports technology, automotive product development and a broad range of other 3D design projects. The skills presented included industrial design sketching, 3D solid and surface modeling, photo-realistic rendering and prototyping. After looking at the Product Innovation Show guests were able to speak with academics and students that are part of the LJMU Formula Student team. Alumnus Gary Laird said “A big thank you for inviting me to the innovation exhibition. I enjoyed the products and the opportunity to see the Formula Student project also”.
