Fall 2018 Program Guide: After-School Classes September 24, 2018 to December 14, 2018 Dear Parents/Guardians, Welcome to our After-School Classes! Our primary goal is to offer developmentally appropriate and enriching classes that balance and complement the regular school day. There are three sessions, Fall, Winter, and Spring. The Fall and Winter sessions have ten weeks, while the Spring session has eight weeks and each offers a variety of classes such as art, dance, LEGO robotics, karate, soccer, and more. • Registration Policy for After School Classes: • Online (including payment) via Eton School’s website. • Opens on Monday, September 17, at 7:00 a.m. • Closes when a class wait list is full or on September 28. • Offered on a first come, first served basis. • Wait lists are created for all full classes in the order received. • Open spots in classes are filled from the wait list in the order received. • Upon completion of registration and payment, a confirmation email is sent to the person registering the
student. If it does not arrive, please check junk mail/clutter folders.
• If registering for an open spot from the wait list, the registration must be completed within the stated time
frame or else the place goes to the next name on the wait list.
If an enrollment minimum is not met, a class may be canceled after the registration deadline, and we will issue a refund. All participants are informed of the class cancellation at the minimum of a week before the start of the class. We do not provide refunds for withdrawing from a class after September 28. We have also included information on the different Clubs for Upper Elementary and Middle School in this guide. While registration is not required to join a club, student participants are considered to be in Clubhouse and are charged as such. Join Karate-X this year for awesome classes that are disciplined, challenging and fun! Students learn and practice Karate skills with punching bags, breaking boards, blocking drills, kicking targets and more! Karate-X has been teaching in the Puget Sound for 19 years, with a Martial Arts program specifically designed for preschool and elementary students. The professional instructors know how to motivate kids while building self-confidence and discipline. Belt rank testing is held at the end of each session, giving students goals to aim for and recognition of their accomplishments. For beginners who have never tried Karate, to athletes of any sport, Karate-X will challenge and grow bodies and minds!
Nature Storytelling

This is a storytelling and science class that allows students to explore their natural world. Each week focuses on a different plant or animal from the Northwest. The class begins with a song and then a spoken story, usually from a Native American nation. Then two or three books, both fiction and nonfiction are read aloud. Short science lessons about the plant or animal studied that week are presented between stories. Through storytelling, music, movement, and science, students learn to connect with and understand our Northwest plants and animals, which often live in our backyards. At the end of each class, students receive a fact sheet from the lesson to take home, so that they can share what they have learned with their family.
Chess for K (9 Weeks)

In this class, students learn the basics of the game of chess. They start with how every piece moves and the goal of the game. In every lesson, students receive puzzles to help them learn the piece. There is plenty of practice with the coach as well as peers.

Art for Kids School is delighted to bring their program to the students at Eton School. As an established after-school multimedia fine art program with a 30-year history of teaching fine art to children, their unique program is designed to provide an opportunity for children to explore and develop confidence in their creativity in a variety of materials. In an ongoing sequential program, skills are developed much like in ballet or piano lessons. Art for Kids School teaches techniques rather than expression. All instructors have fine art degrees and are passionate about art and teaching children. Their philosophy is all children have an innate ability to be creative. The creation of art is a process whereby there are no mistakes. All seeming mistakes can be changed into desirable results. We hope your children will enjoy our program.

It also provides children with an opportunity to express their individuality while working on gross motor skills and developing cognitive and social skills. Hip-Hop is the perfect class for children who want to dance, stay active, and learn how to freestyle! Musicality, rhythm, and creative movement are key components of this fun, urban/street-style dance class that teaches boys and girls alike to step, stomp, and shake it out.
Ukulele for Kids

The ukulele is an excellent instrument to learn how to play music. It’s relatively simple to learn, easy to tote around, inexpensive, super fun, and timelessly popular! In this ensemble, we jump right into the fun and learn how to play music on the ukulele. By the end of the course, students know a few chord positions, be able to play a couple of songs on the ukulele and be able to sing along. The instructors bring a classroom set of ukuleles with them to every class, and they highly recommend that students also have a ukulele at home to practice.

In this class, students learn tactical chess ideas like pins, forks, and discoveries. Students work on puzzles learning how to checkmate the opponent in one or two moves and work on tactics. Students watch and learn from short master and grandmaster games. There is a lot of chess-playing time too.

In this class, students use both their hands and handy machines to make oodles of fun projects that may include emojis, pajamas, aprons, messenger bags, zipper totes, infinity scarves, monsters and more. On the first day of class, the instructor surveys the young sewists to come up with projects that are both fun and challenging for their experience level and interest. No experience necessary and all supplies, as well as fun, are provided.

Ellipsis Math Adventure is a series of enriching and fun math classes that explore the beauty of Math from various perspectives. In these classes, students are immersed in rich tasks and hands-on projects which expose students to interesting high-level concept of Math (such as Golden Ratio, Combinatoric, and Geometric Sequence). Activities and projects are designed to boost their math skills and critical thinking. In addition, these tasks and projects are highly selective to develop students’ deductive reasoning, logical thinking, and visual discrimination.
DJ Music Producer 101 (9 Weeks)

Have you ever wanted to make your own music or learn to DJ like the professionals? In this exciting hands‑on class, students will jump into the basics of music-making the fun way! Using state of the art music production equipment, these young music producers will learn the art of songwriting through classic DJ analysis techniques and creating a remix of their favorite song! Students need to bring their computers that can access www.soundtrap.com through the Google Chrome web browser.

Calling all Minecrafters! Building Minecraft mods is a great way to learn programming, harness creativity, and enhance problem-solving skills while making your favorite game even better. Each student will get to run their own Minecraft server where they can customize the game with their own world maps and features. Students will design custom textures, build amazing structures, give their players new abilities, and depending on experience even create their own mini-games all while learning Linux and programming JavaScript.

Grades 6, 7 and 8 Wednesdays Time: 3:30-4:45 p.m. Cost: $11.00/hour (Charges appear and are billed as Clubhouse) Location: Veladare The Middle School Homework Club provides a supportive learning environment for students in grades 6, 7, and 8 to complete their homework in a peaceful and quiet after school setting. Supervised by Dr. Walker, students receive homework support and opportunities to collaborate on their work. Advance notice of attendance is appreciated; however, drop-ins are welcome with a note from a parent.
Middle School Writer’s Workshop
Grades 6, 7 and 8 Mondays Time: 3:30-4:45 p.m. Cost: $11.00/hour (Charges appear and are billed as Clubhouse) Location: Veladare The Middle School Writers’ Workshop is founded on the idea that writing is a life skill like other arts and like sports that deserves dedicated support beyond homework and classes. The purpose is to provide time, space, and coaching to support Eton Middle School students in their development as writers. The coaching provided will be from a multitude of sources: peers, teachers, professional writers, writings of various kinds, and videos/podcasts. The goals are to give Eton middle school students the following: support for their various writing projects, strategies for improving their writing skills, and tools to develop a sense of themselves as writers. This club supports Eton’s mission and vision by fostering the student’s development of their unique and diverse voices as writers. The students will have opportunities to work independently as well as collaboratively. This Club is run by parent volunteer, Dr. Erika Flescher who was a writing instructor at the high school and college levels, with Dr. Walker as Club Adviser.

Students in the F.I.R.S.T. LEGO League Club will have hands-on robotics fun while transferring classroom concepts to real-world applications. They will be challenged to research scientific problems and present solutions while working with LEGO Mindstorms. Supervised by Mr. Glatt and parent volunteer Mrs. VedBrat, students will participate in the 30th year of the F.I.R.S.T. LEGO League! The theme for this year is “Into Orbit,” with challenges that will transport the team into space, where they will explore, challenge, and innovate in the vast expanse of space.
