here is a moment in the middle of every show when models are doing quick changes, hair and makeup are doing touch ups, back stage staff members are working to make sure the set looks as pristine as it did in the beginning, and graphic design is catching every bit of it on tape. The sound of the bass is in tempo with everyone’s beating hearts. It’s chaos. It’s madness. It’s insane. It’s the time when I always take one second to myself. I look around and realize that that moment is what makes it all worth it- the hours of preparation, the brainstorming meetings, the phone calls and emails to confirm every detail, the late nights building everything from nothing. The laughs, the tears, the highs, the lows, all of it comes together and in one moment, the world stops and makes sense. Fashion Board has been my family for four years. If I could stay forever, every single one of you know I would. I hope all of you continue to have the same passion for this organization you had the day you joined. Take a moment during the show tonight, and every show from here on out, and look around to see that what we are doing is truly amazing. It is worth everything.

rowing up with a sister who is threeyears younger than me, I have always had someone looking to me for words of wisdom. Of all the advice I have given my sister, perhaps the most important pieces of advice I have given is to always be totally yourself and to never stop chasing your dream. These are things I remind myself of often and things I hope to remind others of every day. When deciding a theme for our Spring/Summer 2018 issue, I knew I wanted to remind our readers of these same things. When the words “Ultra Violet” were brought to my attention during a brainstorming meeting, I was intrigued. After researching the meaning of the PANTONE Color of the Year, I was hooked. According to PANTONE, Ultra Violet expresses uniqueness, imagination, and pursuit of the future. Our Spring+Summer 2018 issue features artists of all kinds, from chefs to student designers, who motivate me to pour into my passions as they have theirs. The looks in this issue inspire me to use my imagination and to be bold and unique. My hope is that this issue does the same for you. I hope that our work inspires you to be proudly original, to never stop pushing creative boundaries, and to follow your dreams wherever they take you. I hope you live your life in shades of Ultra Violet.

I love you all and Fashion Board forever.

To every single person who had a hand in making this issue come to life, thank you from the bottom of my heart.

Meet Être’s Spring/Summer 2018 cover models, Sonya Okungu and Dylan Dempsey. Sonya Okunga is a twenty-year-old pre-optometry major from Conyers, Georgia striving to eventually be an optometrist in Toronto. She said she hopes to retire by the time she is 50 so she can travel. Okunga described her personal style as “urban with a hint of thrifty” and finds fashion inspiration from Tumblr, Instagram, and her mom’s closet. She said her style icon is her sister. “My sister learned all her fashion stuff from me, but now she’s surpassed me,” Okunga said. She said she feels like her own style is unique because she doesn’t have one specific look. “One day I’ll look like I walked straight out of Atlanta then the next I’ll go cultural. I've been told that I have a vintage style or sometimes a relaxed, tomboyish look,” she said. Okunga said she is thankful to be a part of Être because it has given her more confidence in front of the camera. “I’m learning more about my angles and how to do different poses. Believe it or not I used to hate having my picture taken. I liked walking the runway more since I was familiar with it.” Dylan Dempsey is a twenty-year-old interior design major from Starkville, Mississippi aiming to be a designer. Dempsey said he also hopes to have a realestate license so he can flip and resell houses. Because Dempsey grew up in Starkville, he always dreamed of being a member of Fashion Board. Dempsey explained his personal style varies, but he always loves classic street style because it gives him an opportunity to show his personality. He said his style icons are Anwar Hadid, Lucky Blue Smith, A$AP Rocky and Johnny Depp. Dempsey said he finds inspiration through

"I found my self-expression through fashion."

The Serendipity Hippie P

By: Virginia Wages Photos by: Rachel Marie Photos

aisley Hamilton is the owner of an enchanting auto shop turned bohemian studio in Downtown Starkville known as Serendipity Hippie. A few weeks ago, I had the pleasure of getting to know Hamilton better. Here are a few things I learned about her and her mesmerizing studio. Q: What is your zodiac sign? A: Sagittarius – I am always searching for a deeper meaning and I’m definitely not a big fan of planning things out. I’m kind of an introvert and an extrovert. I’m never satisfied with the mundane. Q: I saw a lot of crystals in the store when I first walked in, which one would you say is your favorite? A: Carnelian. It stands for creativity, sexuality, and playfulness. Q: Where did the store’s mantra, “Adorn the spirit. Clothe the soul,” come from? A: Straight from the heart. It changes as I change. To me, it serves as a vision and reminder to curate offerings that aren’t necessarily seasonal or disposable, but resonate with a unique individual. I found self-expression through fashion. My focus as a designer and artist is for the wearer of these handmade pieces to feel closer to spirit and deeper in soul. Q: Speaking of fashion, who would you say is your “style icon?” A: Stevie Nicks is a huge inspiration, I adore her boldness! I’m also really into Nicole Richie and her House of Harlow collection. I really admire her free spirit. Q: Would you also consider Stevie Nicks as a musical influence on your work? A: Yes, a lot of my patternmaking and designs are based on the 60s and 70s. Extreme flare and witchy influence. When creating, I like to listen to Random Rab, Emancipator, and Bonobo. Q: That’s awesome! Speaking of designs, most of your stuff is handmade, right? What does that mean to you?

10

A: For me, handmade means that something is completely made by hand from start to finish, meaning that I get to watch the clothes take a complete transformation from conception to reality. I cut, sew, and dye all of the clothes I make in small batches. I prefer to use natural materials, hemp and cotton are my weapons of choice. They are sustainable and you can truly feel the difference. Q: Okay obviously you have an awesome work ethic, and your clothes are fabulous. Where did you learn to do all of this? A: I graduated from MSU in May of 2015 with a degree in Apparel, Textiles, and Merchandising and a minor in Business. I had really great teachers that taught me so much. Dr. Miller was the best – she always expected a lot out of us and that was so good for me. I started Serendipity Hippie in 2011 when I was searching for myself in college.

11

I worked pop-ups and art festivals for about 8 years before the studio came into fruition. After graduation I went backpacking in South America, and when I got back home to my sewing machine things really started to take off. Q: What is your favorite merchandise in the store? A: I love the crystals and earth offerings. They are a beautiful way to bring the outside in. I also really love the fair trade baskets I have in stock right now. I want to use them for everything. They are fair trade and handwoven in Ghana, Africa. Also, my Magic Carpet Belle Bottoms are what dreams are made of.

12

After meeting with Paisley, I was in shock. Not just because I immediately wanted to buy one of everything in the store, but because I felt like I had just connected with my soul sister. She is truly one in a million and I am so thankful that there are people out there like her – people that want to make everyone feel loved, special, and beautiful. If you want to spoil yourself, or if you’re having a bad day and you just need a smile or some good vibes, be sure to stop in at Serendipity Hippie and maybe you will be lucky enough to have a little Paisley rub off on you.

amuel Musgrove grew up in Waynesboro, MS and fell in love with Mississippi State Fashion Board long before deciding to attend the university. Musgrove said that Fashion Board was actually a big reason he decided to come to MSU and major in Fashion Design. He said he has always been super into putting together outfits for himself and others. “I have always been intrigued with art and the idea of being able to create something out of nothing” Musgrove said. This admiration of art led Musgrove to up and coming designer, Oscar Utierre. Musgrove said he loves the way Utierre uses items that aren’t typically used in clothing to make garments and accessories. This inspired Musgrove to begin creating chain accessories in 2017. His pieces come from a place of deep vulnerability, and said it is satisfying when someone notices his success in doing what he loves. Musgrove said that his greatest moments are when someone sees a piece that he has created and absolutely loves it. Musgrove’s authentic style and originality landed him an internship this summer in New York City with Tom Ford. Musgrove said he will be interning for ten weeks and is looking forward to soaking up as much culture that the city has to offer. He said he hopes to take this opportunity given to him at such a ripe age and use to to help establish his career. In ten years, Musgrove said he hopes to be traveling and “just being happy”. When asked if he had any advice for prospective students, Musgrove said to always stay true to yourself an your vision and to work hard. “No matter how cliché it might sound, I know the career ahead of me is going to take a lot of heart and passion,” Musgrove said. Musgrove’s work ethic and originality will no doubt get him, along with his chain accessories, to his dream position.

Be Here Now By: Lydia Neuhoff Photos by: Sara Beth Pritchard

Dancing under the star-filled night sky, illuminated by colored lights and lasers, all I can hear is the booming bass. All I can feel is my heart pumping wildly in my chest as I dance with no inhibitions. I spin around to my closest friends and complete strangers and shake my head in disbelief in a moment of complete self-awareness. I am here to escape from all the burdens of reality, and for four days, I can only be here now. My bones are buzzing with this pure electricity that connects me to everyone else. All of us share the same wild look in our eyes and dance until the sun slowly creeps above the horizon, only to wake up and do it all over again. When those days of fantasy come to an end, I crash land back in reality with dazed eyes and a sense of emptiness. For days, I relive in my head and yearn for those sunny days spent laying underneath the shade of a tree mesmerized by bubbles and hula hoops floating in the sound waves. I reflect on the sparkly nights that seemed frozen in time. Finally, I look ahead to my next days as a butterfly with an 808 state of mind.

Viva La Vida By: Michelle Kellum Photos by: South of Indigo Photography Clothing: Gypster Veil

There is nothing like the rush that comes with adventure, and no adventure like traveling the world. Unfortunately, a world traveler does not always have the luxury of bringing her entire closet along. Here are a few tips to have a stress-free and fashionable semester abroad.

1. Create a Capsule Wardrobe If you don’t know what a capsule wardrobe is, it’s essentially condensing your wardrobe into about 35 items. This sounds impossible when you consider everything in your closet, but the idea is to have pieces that you can mix and match endlessly so that you aren’t wearing the same outfit every day. Considering a capsule wardrobe can be very economical and stylish if you invest in long-lasting, good-quality pieces for your wardrobe. Think how much space you will have for souvenirs! 2. Keep it Classic Remember, if you want to get the most out of your capsule wardrobe, keep it classic. The overall color scheme should be neutral colors, then add your pops of color with shoes, bold purses, funky scarves, sunglasses or a classic bold lip. When traveling abroad, you’ll notice that people do not wear athletic shorts and t-shirts as is custom here, so make sure you pack accordingly by including dressier options.

3. Be Comfortable Just because your wardrobe isn’t sweats and a t-shirt, doesn’t mean you can’t be comfortable. Low-maintenance chic is very popular abroad, so having a classic denimsneaker combo is perfect for everyday wear. Many brands are now jumping on board with this, so expect to see more comfy-fashionable items hit the stores. 4. Discover Yourself Traveling abroad and taking risks will bring you closer to yourself than you ever thought possible. Discovering who you are and being confident should reflect in what you wear, because after all, fashion is one of the greatest forms of self-expression.

Me Too

"Speaking out against any injustice is our duty." By: Tori Boatner

With the recent outbreak of sexual assault accusations and misconduct, it is important for young women to feel empowered to exclaim “me too”. Many accusers have been holding in dark secrets of sexual misconduct for years, even decades. Their rediscovered voice is a pillar of strength for college students to speak out now. The sense of community and self-worth college brings allows this movement to impact mass numbers of women, including myself. This movement inspires me to go beyond myself to help others in their cry out, understanding that I could be next. The Me Too Movement has shown me that our country is capable of coming together to support one another despite our differences. Although I have not experienced sexual assault, victims’ bravery of coming out has encouraged me to be outspoken in all walks of life. Speaking out against any injustice is our duty. It is our duty as women to strengthen each other in any time of distress. In such a technological world, millennials have all the resources they need to further this movement. Hashtags, online campaigns and on-campus booths are productive ways to make change on one’s campus, city, state and nation. Victims and comforters are able to help each other heal via social media. Although likes and retweets may seem subtle, they are intentional confirmations to victim’s cries that their voice has been heard. Support from cyber friends can truly make the difference. With the support of the implementation of programs like Title IX, college women should feel protected and safe to speak out. Many universities offer additional resources such as counseling and hotlines to call for those in need or victims of sexual assault. #MeToo is a mandatory message that brings college women together, creates bonds, and provide guidance in moments of pain. It is something important to me and college women everywhere. We stand together, always.

Professional Protocol By: Julia Harrelson One daunting part of finding an internship or job is the interview. Deciding what to wear to the interview can be fun, but can also add to your anxiousness. Here are some tips to find an outfit that will help you land your dream job.

Do Your Research

Research is probably not the first thing that comes to mind when deciding what to wear, but it’s crucial. Find out what employees wear on a typical day in the office, and mimic their style so you will be perceived as one of them.

Wear Neutral Colors

Neutral colors are always viewed as professional. Stick with colors like black, gray, brown, white, and tan. Be sure to add a little personality to your outfit by wearing a pop of color. A color statement necklace or watch band is a great way to give your outfit some life.

Sweet Like By: Lydia Neuhoff Photos by: Rachel Bowman Makeup by: Hannah Hancock, Analise Bryant, Callie Ruth Bridgforth

Candy

With a bit of creativity and courage, it is easy to look as sweet as candy by incorporating a little rainbow color in your every day look. Add a pop of cotton candy colored eyeliner in your waterline for a subtle, eye-brightening effect. To push the boundaries even further, pick a candy colored eyeshadow, whether it be green, orange or purple and sweep it all over the eye. If eyes are not your expertise, opt for an easy, bright bubblegum pink lipstick instead. If you are feeling particularly daring or simply just want to have fun for a summer party or a music festival, reuse those fun eyeshadows as bright, vivid blush or use the shimmery pastel colors for a unique cheek highlight. With these new looks, you will undoubtedly win Willy Wonka’s golden ticket!

42

Avoid Noisy Jewelry

Jewelry like bangles and rings tend to be played with during an interview and can be loud and distracting. Avoid any chance of this by simply not wearing jewelry that could distract you from your interview.

Get Coupon Apps

Professional clothing tends to be a bit pricy. Check out apps like Retail Me Knott and Groupon for discounts. Sign up to receive emails from your favorite professional clothing stores too so you never miss a sale.

Smile

Be confident. You’re prepared and looking sharp, so relax and smile. Smiling shows that you are eager to share your knowledge and abilities. Keep your chin up, you are going to be amazing! 43

aniel Maxwell grew up in Knoxville, TN where his love for cooking began early while spending time cooking with his dad. The now 28-year-old attended the University of Tennessee at Knoxville where he put himself through college by cooking at a local country club. Maxwell said that his favorite part about being a chef is making others happy, and his food does just that. 929 Coffee Bar made the transition from solely coffee to serving lunch about a year ago. Maxwell is currently the chef at 929 and works with his sous chef, Corey. Maxwell said he likes to cook instinctually. When asked what his favorite part about working at 929 is, Maxwell said it is the the rotating menu that they feature. This gives him the freedom of trying out new recipes, and the challenge of perfecting them. Maxwell has fully embraced the “buy local” atmosphere that Starkville promotes and tries to get all of his ingredients locally. The ingredients used for today’s recipes were from Bountiful Harvest Farms, a local food farm here in Starkville. Sam and Isabel McLemore both attended Mississippi State University and now own Bountiful Harvest Farms. They are passionate about growing quality food and said they could never choose a favorite. Like Maxwell, they enjoy change and love the wide variety of items grown in the different seasons. When asked what their food philosophy is, they replied, “Healthy produce, happy people!”. These recipes were inspired by the upcoming spring and summer seasons. The ingredients include a variety of thing such as pineapple, watermelon, and edible flowers. Yes, you read that correctly, the flowers featured in the pictures are not just for looks, you can actually eat them with your meal.

Japanese Iced pour over

This is simply a way to brew a single cup of coffee and chill it immediately. Unlike cold brewed coffee, which takes a minimum of 12 hours and can sometimes leave coffee tasting a little two dimensional, this method takes roughly five minutes and will have all the nuance of a regular cup of drip coffee except cold and refreshing.

Ingredients Coffee: 25g fresh ground coffee 3oz of ice 10oz of boiling water

To Brew: Pour over setup Electronic scale and timer recommended

personal shopping & styling service

Directions

First boil the water. Place filter in the pour over, rinse the filter with hot water and discard the filter water. Grind your coffee just slightly finer than you would typically grind it and place it in your rinsed filter. Place the ice into your decanter or glass, whichever the coffee will be dripping into, and place your pour over with the coffee on top on top of decanter or glass. If using a scale, place decanter and pour over on scale, then zero it out. Start your timer and pour just enough of the boiling water to saturate all the coffee grounds, 50 grams or less. Let sit for 30-45 seconds or until the grounds stop swelling or bubbling. Add water until there is about an inch of standing water in your pour over, 50-100 grams. Continue to add water little by little keeping your water level about the same till you have poured all the water. All of your water should drain through the coffee at around 3-4 minutes. Stir the coffee and add fresh ice, since hopefully all your ice melted in the process. Pro Tip: If water drains faster than 3-4 minutes, use a finer grind next time. If it takes longer than that, use a coarser grind.

Taking Root Starkville founded company here to stay. Last spring, we introduced you to Glo, the Starkville based company that created light up ice cubes that are now used all over the United States and in several other countries. We sat down with Anna Barker, Director of Business Development at Glo, to see what the company has been up to recently. Glo moved to a new, bigger space on Lampkin Street in Starkville, MS and is constructing a creative work space for young entrepreneurs in the area to use. They are partnered with the Entrepreneur Center at Mississippi State. Barker said the hope is that students with startup business ideas will work in the collaborative space, make connections to the Downtown Starkville area and stay after they graduate. “For Starkville to become a place for young professionals, some young professionals have to start staying,” said Barker. Glo will also be launching their new line of bath bombs with Da Bomb in May. The bath bombs will be available at a variety of major retailers along

with 4,500 smaller retailers across the country. The company also recently created a new brand. Barker said the idea for this brand fell into place accidentally. The team kept getting feedback from parents who were using the original glo cubes to get their nervous children into the bathtub. Many parents claimed their children would cooperate better at bath time with the light up cubes in the tub to play with. “We were marketing and advertising our product in cocktails, and parents were still buying it to use in their children’s baths,” said Barker. This inspired the company to create Glo Pals. Glo Pals is an entirely new brand by Glo designed for children. Glo Pals light up and project character faces in the bathtub and turn off when the water drains. “It’s really just product development, the technology is still the same,” said Barker. Glo is paving the way for young professionals to be creative, start a career in Starkville and stay for a while. We cannot wait to see what they do next.

I’ve attended countless numbers of concerts throughout my lifetime, but I never gave any thought to the time and energy that was put into the production of the event. Last fall, my point of view completely changed. I became a member of Music Maker Productions, a student-run organization that works to bring the city of Starkville and Mississippi State University together through a love for live music. On February 23rd, 2018, I and the 19 other members of MMP brought A$AP Ferg to the city of Starkville for the first time. We knew we wanted someone big, someone fresh and someone the city of Starkville and students of Mississippi State had never seen. We

wanted someone that would create buzz both on and off campus. After months of researching and planning, we finally came to a decision – A$AP Ferg would perform at the Mississippi Horse Park. As a new member, I had very little knowledge of what it took to put on a large production. I was all excitment and giddiness, but I had to put that all aside. The work began as soon as the name was decided. I spent countless hours selling tickets and promoting the show. My days, weeks and nights were dedicated to the success of the show. Every member’s mindset was very productive, and we did whatever it took to get the job done. On February 23rd, everything finally came together. Over two -thousand people filled the soldout Mississippi Horse Park to watch A$AP Ferg as he performed his last show before his 2018 American tour. The crowd’s excitement was unmistakable. The moment A$AP Ferg hit the stage was something that I will never forget. It was finally real. It was actually tangible. We constructed something powerful and vigorous. We constructed happiness for over two thousand people.

"My days, weeks, and nights were dedicated to the success of this show."

Good As Gone By: Madilyn Holden

Photos by: Sara Beth Pritchard Road trips are basically a right of passage during one’s college career. Most college students’ budgets don’t allow for extravagant cross country destinations. However, there is a way to have that movie-like road trip experience that won’t break the bank. 1. Where to Go: The first step in planning any road trip is to look at all of your realistic options. Places like Nashville, Atlanta, Dallas and Charleston are all under a ten-hour drive from Starkville. If you are looking for a more outdoorsy adventure, Florida is filled with campsites and springs that make the perfect getaway to escape the stresses of college. 2. Where to Stay: Finding a place to stay can be the most daunting task about planning a road trip, and the most expensive. That is why Airbnb is the perfect budget-friendly option for college students. You can search thousands of places to stay within your price range and as an added bonus, most of them are super trendy spaces. 3. Where to Eat: One of the best resources to help find where to eat on road trips is Instagram! There are so many Instagram accounts that feature restaurants from different cities. To keep it affordable, try and look for places that are popular among the younger audience. However, if you do want to splurge on a meal every once in a while, choose lunch instead of dinner because it is usually cheaper. If you are a brunch fan like most college students, Atlanta and Charleston have some of the best brunch spots in the U.S. 4. What to Do: Now that the stressful parts of planning a road trip are out of the way, let’s get to the fun part! How are you going to spend your time once you get to your destination and how are you going to make it affordable? Going to museums, botanical gardens and parks are the perfect way to save money and enjoy the history and culture of the city that you are visiting. Avoid tourist traps by venturing off the beaten path and you might just discover a hidden gem wherever you are visiting! The journey of the road trip is just as important as the destination. Use this time to slow down a little and just enjoy the presence of the ones you care about around you. We can get so wrapped up in the stressful responsibilities of college and our busy lives. Road trips are the perfect opportunity to get away from it all and clear your head. Now is the perfect time to experience new places and step out of your comfort zone with your closest friends!
