The Year Ender

The Flashback March Pakistan Day this year marked the day Mehwish Hayat received her Tamgha-e-Imtiaz. This was a huge achievement for the starlet as she was the only celebrity to receive the award this year and also received severe backlash for it. The Chhalawa actress dedicated her award to all the girls of Pakistan who have big dreams. September Mahira Khan made Pakistan proud once again when she put her best foot forward as she strutted down the L’Oréal Paris Le Défilé runway show at Paris Fashion Week as the brand ambassador. She walked the ramp to join the leading ladies of L’Oreal Paris and shone under the Eiffel Tower. She was snapped with a beaming smile and donning a black leather jacket ensemble by Karl Lagerfeld. October The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, Kate Middleton and Prince William, arrived in Pakistan for an official five-day tour of the country this October. Kate Middleton and Prince William won many hearts during their visit and the Royal couple mentioned they thoroughly enjoyed their stay. During their visit, Middleton sported a number of different looks created for her by local designers and couturiers. November Mallak Faisal Zafar won an international competition for figure skating in Austria, beating hundreds of other contestants from around the world. The young twelve-yearold Pakistani girl grabbed the first position in the two-day Basic Novice Girls II category at the 24th International Eiscup Inssbruck. November In a landmark achievement for Pakistan, Aqsa Kausar, an accomplished graduate of NUST School of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science (SEECS), became the first female Google Developer Expert in Machine Learning from Pakistan. She is currently working as an Artificial Intelligence (AI) developer with a software organisation named Red Buffer.

The 10 most unforgettable moments that took Pakistan by storm in 2019!

August Aiman Khan and Muneeb Butt who had a super trending wedding last year were blessed with a baby girl, Amal, this August. “I don’t have words to explain the feelings. Alhamdulillah, Allah has blessed me with the most precious gift. Rehmat-e-Khuda, my daughter Amal Muneeb is finally in my arms,” Butt wrote on social media. September Pakistani models Mushk Kaleem and Alicia Khan graced the ramp at Milan Fashion Week as they walked for Haitian-Italian designer Stella Jean. While Jean often creates unique cultural fusions in her work, this collection was perhaps the most auspicious new venture of the critically acclaimed designer because her collection featured handicrafts from northern Pakistan. November After the high profile royal visit to Pakistan by the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, Queen Maxima of the Netherlands arrived in Pakistan for a three-day visit in her capacity as the United Nations Secretary General’s Special Advocate for Inclusive Finance for Development. The Queen has been the UN Secretary General’s Special Advocate for Inclusive Finance for Development since 2009. November In a landmark peace move, the Pakistan government opened the Kartarpur Corridor, for the followers of Guru Nanak, which allowed them to visit the revered Sikh Guru’s final resting place without a visa. The project, touted by many as the ‘corridor of peace’ between the two arch-rivals, was completed in a record period of 11 months by Islamabad. December Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy’s latest animation short film, SITARA: LET GIRLS DREAM won big at the Los Angeles Animation Festival 2019. This is a big achievement as it is the only animation film from Pakistan to have won three awards at LAAF 2019. DECEMBER 29 2019-JANUARY 4 2020

It’s almost 2020, which means we’re ready to welcome new trends and ditch the old. While some trends have been done to death, others should never have been a trend in the first place. Here’s the list of trends we’re so ready to bid adieu to and the one we’re welcoming with open arms!

Biker Shorts Ok enough already! The biker short is heavily influenced by Princess Diana’s sartorial style and was sported throughout the year by celebrities including th the likes of Kendall Jenner, Rih Rihanna and Beyonce. They were also sported by every Victoria’s Sec Secret model in abundance and gaine gained quite a bit of traction. While they may m be super comfortable and make somewhat of a style statement, the biker bike shorts need to go and never be see seen again.

Slogan Hair Clips *Snooze* While these had a major moment in the year gone by, we really need to bid farewell to these encrusted slogan hair clips. From pearls, to diamontes to the oversized resin hair clips, these were most certainly all the rage in 2019. But we think the trend is more than over done now and really needs to come to an end. The year 2020 will bring with it a new retro replacement for these hair accessories.

Chunky Dad Sneakers Not just us, but the whole fashion scene is just so over these chunky sneakers which were all the rage this year. If there was only one trend we had to get rid of st certainly be the in 2020, it would most ch chunky sneakers. From exa exaggerated platforms, to bold colours, to t thick tongues, we wonder how these even became a trend in the fir first place.

Fanny Packs Fan Okay we get it! These are Ok c comfortable, they’re practical and they’re big enough to carry all your essentials for the day. But do we really need to see more of them in 2020? We think not. Ever since the fanny pack rose to fame, it has been done to death. From bright bold coloured ones, to sleek black ones, both high-end designers and high street brands showcased fanny packs in a big way and before we get really over it, it’s time the trend fizzles out. Short Cut Power Suits 2020 is going to be host to an unconventional and revamped version of the power suit; the short cut power suit. This year, the tuxedo will see a shorter length, cut just under the knees and teamed with more feminine detailing like plunging necklines, sheer organza blouses and bralettes. Fashion powerhouses including Chloe, Valentino and Saint Laurent all showcased the short cut power suit and we can’t wait to see it on the high street.

Neon Eyeliner

Linear Stripes

Brace yourselves! Your classic winged eyeliner is about to get revamped; with neon! The 60’s style winged eyeliner made a neon splash on the spring/summer 2020 runways and we’re about to see it hit mainstream in the New Year. The good thing about anything neon is that you require very little of it. Add a swipe of neon liner and couple it with a glossy lip and you’ll be good to go all summer long! This is one trend we’re excited to try pronto!

If you thought pinstripes were restricted to menswear, think again; because the pinstripe is going to be all the rage this season. Both vertical and horizontal stripes will be a popular trend in 2020 and vertical stripes will be especially favoured because they flatter just about every body type. If you’re not entirely sure how to incorporate stripes into your wardrobe, then stick to the simple rule of only mixing two prints at a time. Stripes work well with florals and animal print.

Tropical PPrint Pantone colour of the Pantone’s year m may be ‘Classic Blue’ b but tropical print is all set s to take centre stage in 2020. Think palm ttrees, dense forests and jungles jun and art deco prints ssplashed across luxe fa fabrics. This trend will truly tru evoke your sens senses and take you rig right into nature. Pair ssome tropical print with some dainty gold jewellery or a minimalistic garm garment and take a ride on the wild side.

29

DECEMBER 29 2019-JANUARY 4 2020

Colour of the year - Classic Blue Pantone has announced the colour of the year as ‘Classic Blue’. Classic blue is a hue that exudes simplicity and is one of the most timeless colours. Expect to see this colour dominate your wardrobe in 2020. From clothes, to shoes, to household items, Classic Blue is all set to be the IT colour of the New Year. We’re excited to see how designers will incorporate the colour in their upcoming collections. If you want to stay on trend, it’s time to adopt this colour stat!

Exaggerated Victorian Sleeves Statement-making sleeves reigned supreme on all spring summer runways for 2020 and while we saw these throughout 2019, they are about to get bigger, bolder and even more voluminous. With the rise of the exaggerated Victorian sleeve, there’s little to no need to accessorise as your sleeves will do all the talking. Pair your puff sleeves with a pair of jeans and slides for a casual look, or up the ante with a pair of faux leather pants and heels for an added edge.

One Lesson Learned in

Adnan Pardesy Designer 2019 has taught the very lesson I never learnt which was to let things come to you. Patience and perseverance is one thing which was never my virtue. This year taught me how important it is to be patient and let things unfold themselves and present them to you rather than pushing very hard and making a mess of it in the end and of course gratitude. You know what it all works out in the end if your heart is in the right place. Stop worrying and start living.

Abdullah Haris Photographer

Aneela Murtaza Stylist One thing I’ve learned this year is to always have love in your heart, no matter the circumstances or the person. At the end of the day, a solid character with moral values always prevails even when things seem difficult. Every year brings highs and lows, but this year has taught me to never give up on the love because it’s all worth it in the end.

In all honesty, 2019 has taught me immense patience, gratitude, forgiveness and the strength to be resilient towards time and all that comes with it.

Agha Talal Actor 2019 taught me and my advice also – “Invest your time on people wisely”.

Kiran Malik Model - Actor

2019 helped me understand myself better in terms of striking a balance between my personal and work life and it also taught me the importance of loving a partner unconditionally.

Rezz Aly Shah PR

A clear vision, backed by definite plans gave me a tremendous feeling of confidence and personal power, this year. Moving onto the next, holding on to the good.

2019 has been quite a roller coaster year for me. My knee injury made me realise how important health is. I have learned to be more brave no matter what happens always have hope and patience. Be kind and let go of what can’t be changed. Peace and Love.

Momin Ali Munshi Film Critic 2019 taught me that most human beings are fickle creatures and those equations and relations don’t stay the same. However people who are meant to be in your life, God makes sure they stay.

Maliha Rehman Journalist Roshanay Afridi Model To always believe in your capability, in your capacity to overcome obstacles and determination to hold yourself to your goal. Work hard and manifest your life, if you stay focused, the universe will bring it to fruition.

One lesson I learnt in 2019: to let go and take it easy sometimes. Life can sometimes get very fast as we multitask and try to master balancing acts. But sometimes it helps if we pause, take a breather, switch off the cellphone (absolutely imperative!) and enjoy the moment.

Faisal Kapadia PR

2019 - What a year! As I reflect upon this year, I’ve realised that this year has taught me to be grateful, to be humble, and to be relentless. I believe 2019 has been the biggest learning curve of my life. Here’s to hoping 2020 would be bigger and better.

Hasan Rizvi PR

I’ve learnt how to stay humble and let my work speak for itself.

I learnt that worrying will get me no where. so give it ur 100%, have faith and things will always work themselves out! Lastly, but most importantly family and health first! Happy New Year Folks!

Asad Dalal PR 2019 taught me to be patient and to trust the process that everything will eventually work out like it always does.

Sajid Ali Social Media sensation Ali Rehman Actor Lesson for 2019 is to keep your head down, work hard, stay humble and respect others no matter what they are, because that’s the only way you’ll succeed in life.

45

DECEMBER 29 2019-JANUARY 4 2020

Tie The

Knot

Just like 2018, 2019 too was a year of I do’s and wedding festivities. As the year comes to an end, we have compiled some of the most memorable weddings of the year. From surprise proposals, to some rather understated ceremonies to some over-the-top nuptials, this year had it all. There were royal weddings, celebrity weddings, lavish ceremonies and intimate affairs. Here are some of the couples who took the plunge in 2019!

Amna Baber and Zahid Noon Model Amna Baber’s wedding to Zahid Noon was one of the first weddings that kickstarted 2019. The model took to Instagram and shared two pictures from her Nikkah ceremony; captioning them “Love, laughter and happily ever after.” Clad in a white embellished ensemble, Babar paired her outfit with a dark green dupatta and heavy jewellery. She looked stunning to say the least! The couple is now proud parents to a baby girl, Naz Afreen Noon.

Mira Sethi and Bilal Siddiqui Mira Sethi surprised her fans after taking to Instagram to announce that she has tied the knot with long time beau and fiancé Bilal Siddiqui in an intimate wedding ceremony in San Francisco, California. Sethi revealed that she did her own hair and make-up to marry the love of her life. The ceremony was a rather intimate one and took place in the presence of close family and friends. From the décor to the outfits, there was nothing over the top about this wedding, making it one of our favourite celebrity weddings of the year.

Zainab Abbas and Hamza Kardar Sports presenter Zainab Abbas secretly tied the knot with Hamza Kardar and left her fans baffled after pictures from her wedding festivities surfaced across social media. Zainab made a stunning bride in some beautiful looks which graced our news feeds. For each one of Zainab’s events, the look was put together impeccably. From the minimal make-up and jewellery to the festive choice of ensembles, Zainab was truly glowing at each event.
