THE CUT
FASHION
Aleezeh Lakhani Aleezeh goes oldschool in a plain, gold lengha choli with a fully embroidered, navy-blue chaddar. This look is a definite win in our books.
Nida Azwer Nida’s strength is classic, feminine designs and here she tops the charts in just that. She goes for a pretty, lilac sari from her own collection, and is nothing short of a style-star in it.

WITH TOOBA SIDDIQUI
The gorgeous model turned actress talks to us in depth about a typical day on the sets of Dobara Phir Se, all the way in New York City!
6am: Time for the morning wake up call in New York City (NYC).
7:30am: I make myself an omelette topped with Shan red chilli powder — I’m a little desi like that. I then proceed to making myself tea, which I carried with me, all the way from Pakistan. I have to have this cup of tea with my breakfast otherwise my day does not go well.
8am: Because of the time difference, I make sure I Skype with my kids before I start work for the day.
8:30am: Omayr Waqar comes to our apartment and we start preparing, and doing our hair and make-up. It takes us about an hour and a half to get ready. Whoever JANUARY 22-28 2017
42
is ready first (normally me), starts heading towards the car and we drive to the shoot location. The whole crew is waiting for us on set when we arrive.
9am: We start shooting around 9am on most days. If it’s an outdoor shoot we wake up earlier. When we were in Connecticut, we were waking up at two in the morning, and spent about 10 hours on set! There is always a handy table with all kinds of snacks in case we need to refuel between takes. Today the table is loaded with goodies such as doughnuts, tea, coffee and a few other snacks.
2pm: We get our lunch break on time here. Since Americans are so punctual, lunch is never served later than two in the afternoon. When we’re done, we take some time off and chill, which is also another way of saying Hareem Farooq, Sanam Saeed and I indulge in a gossip session. I’ve had so much fun with them!
3pm: Since it’s Ali Kazmi’s last day here, and he’s going back to Toronto after this, him and I are goofing around and making Dubsmash videos!
9pm: We have 12-hour shifts, so pack up time is usually by nine. There are a lot of things that happen around this time, which can’t be mentioned here, but what I can say is, although we’ve had very little time to unwind in NYC, we make sure to relax a little. Sanam and I go off to watch a Broadway show together.
11pm: Hareem and I hang out every night and often bring the whole party to us. We have a huge kitchen here that opens up in the backyard. The girls usually just sip on tea or juice while someone is putting on a facemask or someone is oiling their hair — girls will be girls, you know the drill! Afterwards, we take turns to shower as we only have one shower and two toilets between us.
1am: If we don’t have an early start in the morning, we hang out some more or grab a bite to eat. Then it’s time for bed in order to prepare for the next day! 43

THE VAULT WITH SHAHROZ KHAN
Shahroz Khan, a shawl enthusiast, and the proud owner of AKC Handicrafts talks to us about his favourite shawls and even shares tips to preserve these valuable pieces How/when did you get interested in shawls? In 2007 I used to work in Zainab Market and across from me was a Hindu man with a shawl shop. That cultivated my interest in shawls, and I opened AKC Handicrafts in 2012. Which shawls are your favourite? My favourite shawl is a pure Pashmina, one you can pass through a ring. There are a handful of qualities in Pashmina shawls, but the best quality one is so pure and soft. It is lightweight and keeps you much warmer compared to other shawls. I have Pashmina shawls from Multan, interior Sindh and Azad Kashmir. Where did you get them? You pay money for them, and you get them in a shopping bag! I’m joking. There are agents who export and import them. They are big dealers who help bring them to Pakistan, which is how we avail the shawls.
Yes, there is a shawl called a kalandaur, I really love that shawl, so much so that I only keep it for myself. The fabric is such that you can’t do too much embroidery on it, but even so there is five inches worth of embellishment on the edges.
it. This was a tragically unforgettable moment for me! A good shahtoosh has specific qualities, and if you store it for too long, microscopic bugs eat it up. Therefore, whoever has a good quality shahtoosh, please take it out monthly and refresh it. You can also take two to four big elaichis, and wrap your shawl in it so that the fragrance keeps bugs away. I only found out the hard way when my shawl was ruined.
Share a story with us about how you acquired one of your favourite pieces: There is a story about a piece close to my heart, a shahtoosh. It was quite expensive, and I loved it so much that I was scared to wear it. Instead, I kept saving it for a special event. Then when I finally took the shawl out, bugs had unfortunately eaten
Is there anything on your radar that you want to get in the future? Shawls are cultural and traditional; they are not a new trend but timeless pieces. I want such shawls that hold age-old, cultural stories. Original Kalamkar and Shikaragah and raja rani shawls are on my radar.
Is there any piece you are emotionally attached to and why?

WITH MONTY JUNEJO
FASHION
A final year medical student at Barts and The London School of Medicine and Dentistry, and also the founder of ‘Reforming Anatomy’, a project that allows him to interlink art with surgery, here the style-star shares his versatile, trendy and always original style
Understanding your body is the key to looking good and a trait found amongst all impeccably dressed fashionistas. While people shy away from talking about their bodies, these brave souls explain how they work their anatomies to their advantage JANUARY 22-28 2017
52
How would you describe your body type? I would say I am slim. Has your body type changed over the last five years? To be honest, it hasn’t at all! How has your style changed over the years? As I’ve gotten older, travelled and experimented, I’ve discovered my own sense of style and stepped away from labels. Someone would have to pay me a lot of money to sport an oversized horse on my chest. Instead of uncontrolled purchases, I seek individual pieces that will integrate well into a minimalist, capsule wardrobe. How do you dress your body according to your body type? I prefer tailored fits. It’s especially difficult to find trousers that fit, so most of my formalwear is bespoke. For casual wear, I’ll ‘oversize’, but there’s definitely a right and wrong way to do it. Top tip: if you normally wear a size small, go up two sizes and oversize with a large, not a medium. Obviously, this is only for the upper half — wearing jeans two sizes bigger will make you look ridiculous. In your opinion what is the biggest mistake a person can make while dressing? I guess, following the masses and wearing pieces that you are not comfortable in — it always shows! What is your favourite trend this season? Increasingly, we are seeing prints in menswear — even on suits. Not everyone will be immediately comfortable with this, but it’s a (very progressive) breath of fresh air. Also, pyjama style shirts — who wouldn’t want an excuse to wear pyjamas to work? Which items do you consider wardrobe essentials? A camel-coloured coat, versatile trainers that you can dress-up or dress-down, and well-fitted, good quality, plain, crew neck t-shirts in the essential colours (white, grey, black, navy and burgundy). Which styles and cuts do you consider a big fashion faux pas? I would say, deep, v-neck t-shirts, and ostentatious buckles often seen on belts and shoes.

IT RUNS IN THE
FAMILY WITH MARYA JAVED AND ANBER JAVED
Marya Javed, subeditor at the blog ‘A Wardrobe Affair’ and content head at Khoosat Films, and Anber Javed, blogger and founder of ‘A Wardrobe Affair’, rehash their childhood. From tea in the scorching heat of Bahawalpur to an adventurous trip to Dubai, to now working together and sharing a love for fashion — these siblings share it all!
What is your first memory of each other? Marya: Getting on the school bus and rushing to the two front seats together. Anber: Sitting in a murghi ka darba (which was our little Wendy House) and having tea in the scorching heat of Bahawalpur. What is the craziest thing you have done together? Marya: Once we caught a connecting flight to Istanbul with only a 30-minute layover in Dubai. She sprinted from one terminal to the other, at opposite ends of Dubai Airport! And I mean, sprinted. #Gangster Anber: On our first trip to Dubai, I came back with a lost toenail (I never figured out how that happened) and she came back with a broken glass in her foot. It was nothing short of a roller coaster ride. What did you get punished for the most as a child? Marya: For telling my maulvi sahib to give me a day off while my mother took an afternoon nap. Anber: I was quite a well-behaved child. I wasn’t punished much except for when I would beat up my younger brother. If you could only wear one piece of clothing for the rest of your life, from the others closet, what would it be? Marya: A gorgeous, camel-coloured, wool coat she owns. It’s from Zara’s hand stitched collection — I’ve never seen a prettier coat! Anber: Her purple sharara from Generation. JANUARY 22-28 2017
54
If you could swap places with each other, what’s the first thing you would do? Marya: I would go on a Euro trip for a month. Sister’s rich and she needs a holiday! Anber: Celebrate my new, envy-provoking head of hair. What is the one thing you love about your sister? Marya: She is one of the most sincere people I know, and her sincerity is not something she only reserves for certain people. I hope she can hold on to that! Anber: She is a very headstrong yet kind-hearted woman. If you are fighting with each other, how do you make up? Marya: It varies. Like right now, we are making up by filling out this questionnaire. Anber: First we unblock each other from social media, which is followed by reconciliation Whatsapp messages. What is the one secret talent your sister has, that you wish you had too? Marya: An unfailing, untiring eye for detail! I am detailed too, but she will pick up on things most people would miss. She is also willing to go the extra mile to fix it, sometimes unnecessarily so, but it’s her greatest strength. Anber: She has mastered the art of putting together a fashionable look without breaking the bank. Describe your sister in three words: Marya: Hard working, driven and honest. Anber: Super-smart, witty and competitive. Which fictional character is your sister most like? Marya: Jules Austin from The Intern. Anber: Lisa Simpson from The Simpsons. How are your personalities similar? Marya: We are possibly the two most professional people I know, which is why our threshold for unprofessional behaviour is very low (apologies to the victims). We are also both extremely emotional and are interested in a little bit of everything. Anber: We are both very opinionated, committed to our work and have the same taste in fashion. I can’t live without my sister because… Marya: Because no one, repeat, no one, knows and understands you better than your siblings. I know siblings who are not close, but I feel that can be attributed to a lack of communication. I am very close to both my siblings. Anber: Because there is nobody who gives me better fashion and life advice.

ONE PIECE THREE WAYS
T
he sheer, chiffon jacket by Deepak Perwani is the perfect add-on piece n that can be worn with a variety off bles, different ensembles, to add an extra d with oomph. Adorned idery dull-gold embroidery nd the on the sleeves and collar, the jacket is versatile enough to be worn with eastern and western silhouettes and is an ideal choice for fusion-wear!
WITH DEEPAK PERWANI
While trends fade, style remains eternal and one piece can be put together in many diĆĄerent ways. In this feature we have three fashionistas showing us how to put together an item from a designers collection, according to their own individual style and taste!
Saara Hirji
Model, and Student, Brock University To style the sheer jacket from Deepak Perwani, I first wore a slip dress from American Apparel and paired it with my knee-high boots from Public Desire. My hair was kept super-simple, as I went for a straight blow-dry, and for my make-up I did a mild, smoky eye for a little pop as I wanted my outfit to do most of the talking. To add some sparkle, I wore gold earrings to match the gold embroidery on the jacket, and my vintage Gucci watch. This look is perfect for a party or a night out with the girls.
JANUARY 22-28 2017
56
Attiya Khan
Producer, Director, Actor and Social Media Activist I decided to wear the sheer Deepak Perwani jacket with bronze pants to match the embroidery on the piece, and break away from an all-black look. I kept the accessories simple by wearing a pair of black heels and carrying a gold clutch. For my make-up I went for gold and black eye shadow with a hint of red lipstick. I would wear this outfit to a formal dinner or a party.
Hiba Sethi
Board of Director, The Elixir School With the on-going wedding season, I feel this sheer jacket by Deepak Perwani can be worn for a festive night out. For my look, I first paired it with my favourite flared pants from Zara, and then I wore my Christian Louboutin ‘Circus City’ golden heels to match the embroidery on the jacket. Finally, I completed my outfit with a Pucci bag. For my hair and make-up, I prefer to keep it sleek and simple, so I opted for a straight blow-dry and casual make-up using some eyeliner and nude lipstick. I think this would be a great ensemble to wear to a qawwali or a sangeet night! 57

THE CORNER WITH YUMNA IMTIAZ
Yumna Imtiaz, the creative event planner behind Grandeur Events, walks us through her favourite corner — her cosy living room! by Sanya Pervez Hussain
O
n a warm afternoon, we head over to the talented event guru, Yumna Imtiaz’s home. Our host greets us pleasantly and oĐ ers us a glass of mint lemonade to cool us down. As we sip on the lemonade, our eye travels around the beautiful corner. The fi rst thing we notice is a white and brown, open-planned, contemporary kitchen on the left of the living room which is connected to the grease kitchen, where all the cooking is usually done. “My husband likes to cook, hence the kitchen attached with it was made for him. It is an ideal place for us to have a relaxed evening,” explains Imtiaz. Vibrant sunfl owers placed in yellow and blue, ceramic vases which Imtiaz bought from her travels to Turkey, brighten up the space. As we begin our tour, Imtiaz points at her vintage, chalk-finished dining table where she and her family eat dinner together everyday. A wooden door opening up to a scenic patio connects to Imtiaz’s mother-in-law’s house. She shares that living so close to her mother-in-law is rather helpful

and a great comfort for her. It also allows her children to visit their grandparents often. As she continues to explain, we learn that family plays an important role in Imtiaz’s life. Even with her hectic schedule, she always prioritises her time with them. The living room is adorned with candles and family pictures as Imtiaz is a big fan of fresh scents, and thus she feels candles are the perfect accessories for her space. “I want everyone who comes to my house to feel welcome, comfortable and at ease. Our friends and my children’s friends hang out here so it’s a very relaxed area. The room represents us as an easy-going couple and family,” adds Imtiaz. As we admire the paintings from Laiba Malik and Changez, Imtiaz tells us that since it’s a family room and her children are young, she tries to keep it contemporary yet colourful so that everyone is comfortable in the setting. “This room features various colours and has an eclectic mix of furniture. I wanted to keep things interesting and fun as it makes the room’s vibe welcoming therefore I’m constantly playing around with the layout in here. The large windows open up the space to the courtyard and patio, allowing elements of different spaces to create a warm atmosphere,” she adds. While the walls are covered with grey, jute wallpaper from Waqas Vohra, Imtiaz adds quirky accent pieces to uplift the space. Though out of all the intriguing elements we find in the room, Imtiaz claims that the painted cabinet and side table are her favourite pieces. As our tour comes to an end, we take a seat on one of the comfortable black and orange sofas parallel to her Sony flat screen television, and dig into the delicious pastries and homemade aloo chaat Imtiaz has set out for us. Sitting here, we think of this room, and the positive energy we feel here, which Imtiaz has thoughtfully created in order to bring the family together in a neutral space. This corner echoes her love and importance for family life and reflects on her warm, kind personality.

MUSIC
THE NOTEPAD The super-talented singer and songwriter, Sara Haider, lists down her favourite artists and how they have influenced her own music Noori Their music made me who I am. Be yourself, be bold, be unapologetic.
Lin Manuel Miranda He changed my life with his cast album for Hamilton. I would literally go to New York just to try and learn what he knows.
Nayarra Noor She has grace, poise, and a voice that drips with emotion and expression. She is the woman who made me understand Faiz Ahmed Faiz.
Ali Azmat/ Junoon The voice of our nation, and the pride of our music industry. The first of its kind and there will never be another. Ali Azmat made me sing out loud, and it didn’t matter what girls are ‘supposed to sound like’.
Sia An incredible songwriter. I loved her on the Hamilton mix tape and I love Chandelier. She is very Adele-meets-Daft Punk. Raw, emotional, loud, she knows her voice and her sound. I’m a huge Sia fan.
Sanam Marvi An authentic folk singer, and a true talent. I recently discovered Parchan Shaal Pawaar Dhola, and I’m a huge fan.
Michael Jackson One in a billion, one in three billion. An incredible performer, who was decades ahead of his time, he didn’t create art…he was art. He singlehandedly changed the music industry worldwide, forever. His music is my guide and my inspiration.
Bruno Mars My new favourite guy! A fabulous performer, who knows how to cater to today’s music market like no one else. It’s so much fun to perform to his songs live.
Steven Shwartz and Alan Menken Their work raised a generation of siblings singing show tunes and Broadway duets together. When I’m really low I put on a Disney playlist and it instantly uplifts me. Their music is just phenomenal. JANUARY 22-28 2017
