ENGINEERING
PROGRAM DESCRIPTION Tennessee Technological University and East Tennessee State University now offer a joint degree in general engineering. The Bachelor of Science in Engineering (TTU-ETSU B.S. Eng.) degree includes coursework in electrical, mechanical, and civil engineering, preparing students to support a broad area of engineering needs at small- and medium-sized enterprises. According to the American Society for Engineering Education (ASEE), general engineering is one of the most rapidly growing engineering degrees in the United States.
PROGRAM REQUIREMENTS The joint Bachelor of Science in Engineering program offered through TTU and ETSU is composed of 128 credit hours. The coursework is broken down in the following components: General Education Major: Math & Science Major: Engineering Technical Electives Other TOTAL
36 credit hours 22-24 credit hours 54 credit hours 12 credit hours 2-4 credit hours 128 credit hours
COMMON CAREER PATHS Students graduating with a major in Engineering will be prepared to use their focused study in math, science, and engineering to solve problems and design solutions in a variety of industries and settings. The multi-disciplinary nature of this program will prepare students to serve needs in general manufacturing, engineering services, industrial operations, and management of complex engineering processes and programs.
FAST FACTS • The joint Engineering degree (TTU-ETSU B.S. Eng.) is composed of 128 credit hours. Additional credit hours may be required for pre-requisite study or university requirements. • Students must earn at least 32 semester credits at TTU and 32 semester credits at ETSU. Coursework taken at the partner institution will be delivered via synchronous video classrooms. • Some courses will be offered solely through TTU, some courses solely through ETSU, and some courses will be available through both institutions.
PREPARING FOR THE MAJOR Students pursuing the Engineering program (TTU-ETSU B.S. Eng.) should expect focused coursework in math and sciences. Students in the program typically begin math studies in Calculus I and II in their first year. Students go on to complete courses in Calculus III, Differential Equations, and Linear Algebra in subsequent semesters. Students in the program should also expect to complete science sequences in chemistry and calculus-based physics during the first two years of the program.
GETTING STARTED Students may enroll at Tennessee Tech University or East Tennessee State University to pursue the joint Engineering degree. Interested students apply for admission and financial aid at one institution and remain enrolled at that institution throughout the program. Students will complete engineering courses taught by faculty at both institutions. In addition to meeting the requirements for admission, the student must meet one of the following requirements: Freshman Admission: • 3.0 High School GPA • 20 ACT Composite and 22 Math subscore
OR
Transfer Admission: • 2.0 cumulative college GPA (excluding credit for remedial/developmental courses)
Grades of “C” (2.0) or better are required in all math, science, and major courses transferred from other institutions.
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS I intend to begin the program after I graduate from high school. What classes should I take? High school students considering a major in engineering should study the highest math possible in high school. In addition, students are encouraged to take chemistry and physics to provide a foundation for further study in college. I’m a transfer student. Will my credits transfer, and how long will it take me to finish my degree? During the admission process, transfer students should submit official transcripts to the university for evaluation. The Admissions Office and the program coordinator will conduct official reviews and determine courses that are eligible for transfer. Transfer courses in English, math, science, and the major must carry a grade of “C” (2.0) or better. After these evaluations are completed, the program advisor will work with students to identify remaining coursework and to establish a timeline for degree completion.
I have been accepted for admission to the university, but my GPA does not meet the program requirements? Will I have an opportunity to declare engineering as my major at another time? Students who do not meet the program requirements upon admission to the university may pursue entering the program later, once successfully completing math and science prerequisites. Is the joint Engineering program (TTU-ETSU B.S. Eng.) ABET accredited? The program will seek accreditation from ABET, the premier global accreditor for engineering programs, after the graduation of the first class of students. Will the program prepare me to sit for the NCEES Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) exam? Coursework in the major is designed for students intending to sit for the FE exam. Support will be provided for those students preparing for the exam. Students are strongly encouraged to take the exam, though taking the exam is voluntary.
