INTERIOR ARCHITECTURE
ABOUT Interior Architecture is a multi-faceted profession in which creative and technical solutions are applied within a structure to achieve a built interior environment. These solutions are functional, enhance the quality of life and culture of the occupants and are aesthetically attractive. Designs are created in response to and coordinated with the building shell and acknowledge the physical location and social context of the project. Designs must adhere to code and regulatory requirements and encourage the principles of environmental sustainability. The Interior Architecture process follows a systematic and coordinated methodology, including research, analysis and integration of knowledge into the creative process, whereby the needs and resources of the client are satisfied to produce an interior space that fulfills the project goals.
WHY ETSU? The College of Business and Technology Interior Architecture program is dedicated to teaching their designers to think globally, actively engage in dynamic design processes, and create imaginative solutions that promote the awareness and knowledge of interior design’s contributions to health, safety, and the welfare of people in a sustainably built environment. The ETSU Interior Architecture program has dual accreditation. The program is accredited by the Council of Interior Design Accreditation (CIDA) as well as the National Association of Schools of Art and Design (NASAD).
PROGRAM FEATURES ETSU’s Interior Architecture program strives to deliver a well-rounded and comprehensive curriculum that is built around four educational pillars: studio-focused learning, global learning, design process and realization, and cross-disciplinary collaboration.
Studio-Focused Learning Small class sizes offer opportunities for direct engagement with experienced faculty and practicing professionals. Therefore, Interior Architecture students learn by application of learned knowledge in studio-based learning communities.
Global Learning Environment Cross-cultural learning is essential to the Interior Architecture program. Students are given the opportunity to study abroad and spend a summer studying in Italy. Students will explore how design has been applied throughout the country’s long history and will then analyze and apply those lessons to regional and local problems through the rest of their career.
Design Process and Realization Students will develop a dynamic design process that creatively incorporates illustrative and building techniques that enable students to become innovative problem solvers.
Cross-Disciplinary Collaboration Throughout the program students will learn how to effectively collaborate with students from other majors to strengthen their team building skills and gain a fuller understanding of the design profession and its place in changing today’s environments.
CURRICULUM OVERVIEW The Interior Architecture program features a four-year curriculum that is organized around yearly conceptual frameworks.
Year 1: Design as Spatial Literacy During the first year you will learn about the fundamentals of design and how multiple visual communication techniques can be used to illustrate design intent. Ergonomics, color theories, the principles of design and anthropomorphic elements will be applied to a wide variety of projects.
Year 2: Design as Process The importance of understanding human behavior and the design process to a successful design solution is the focus of the second year. Studios help students apply new computer skills, construction fundamentals, and interior materials. Your summer can be spent studying in Italy.
Year 3: Design as Profession Third-year courses focus on healthcare design and starting the transition into becoming a design professional. Evidence-based design and technical skills are balanced with professional practices to prepare students to succeed in their upcoming summer internships.
Year 4: Design as Social Responsibility The fourth year focuses on using your newly acquired design knowledge to solve a social issue. Students work one-on-one with professionals to research, present design solutions, and prepare construction documents to a variety of interested parties.
