A new era is upon the ETSU softball program as head coach Brad Irwin begins his first season at the helm for the Bucs in 2011. After going 21-35 and not reaching the conference tournament for the first time since joining the Atlantic Sun Conference in 2005, the Bucs are coming into this season with a new attitude and fresh start. “We are coming into this season with a new approach on things, while putting the past in the rearview mirror and looking forward to the future,” added Irwin. “We have only referenced last season once since I took over and the girls have been working extremely hard during the offseason. We are not a deep team, so we can ill afford any injuries, but I am excited to take the field on opening day and I really like the makeup of this team. This team will give it 100 percent each time they take the field.” The 2011 Buccaneer squad is made up of two seniors, four juniors, five sophomores and four

freshmen, while senior leader Katie Henderson (Jackson, Tenn.) is the top returning hitter from a year ago and fellow senior righty Jessica Duncan (Ooltewah, Tenn.) is the top returning pitcher for ETSU. Despite losing its top two hitters in Cheniece Cason (.372) and Lucy Schneider (.298), Henderson looks to build on her best season as a Buccaneer. The Jackson, Tenn., native posted a personal best .274 batting average, while leading the team with six home runs. “I have been very pleased with Katie’s leadership both on and off the field during the preseason,” said Irwin. “Katie is going to be one of the key run producers as she will hit in the heart of our lineup, and we look for her to build off a productive junior season.” Meanwhile, Duncan led the Buccaneer pitching staff with nine wins, a 3.63 ERA and 77 strikeouts. Along with Duncan, junior righty Shelby Morris (Mt. Juliet, Tenn.) will be called upon to be another ace of Irwin’s pitching staff. Morris was used as both a starter and reliever in 2010 as she earned three wins and led the team with three saves. Joining Duncan and Morris is freshman Katie Wolff (LaGrange, Texas). Wolff was a fouryear letterwinner at LaGrange High School and named District MVP in 2008 and 2009. The LaGrange, Texas, native went 23-5 with a 0.75 ERA as a junior, along with tossing 12 shutouts and 228 strikeouts. The talented righty also hit .440 with 11 doubles, three home runs and 32 RBIs in 2009. “Jessica and Shelby will be conumber one starters, while Katie will start her share of games as well,” commented

www.ETSUBucs.com

Irwin, who will rely on all three pitchers this season. “Both Jessica and Shelby are two different types of pitchers, and we will determine who starts based on matchups. Katie will see time as a starter and will also work out of the bullpen. She brings another dimension to our pitching staff.” The Buccaneer battery mates include Henderson, freshman Jackie Baird (Ooltewah, Tenn.), and sophomore Whitley Hensley (Erwin, Tenn.). Henderson carries the most experience behind the dish as she started 20 games for the Bucs last season. However, Henderson can also expect to see time at third when she’s not catching. When Henderson isn’t handling the catching duties, Baird and Hensley will split time behind the plate – and like Henderson – Baird will also see time at third. “We are hoping Jackie can provide some pop in the lineup for us as a freshman,” commented Irwin. “Like Henderson, Jackie will be counted on to drive in runs because she can hit the long ball and find the gaps as well. “One thing I really like about this team is the versatility we have,” added Irwin. “The majority of our players can be used at multiple positions, and this is a great resource to have. We are definitely going to take advantage of this strength.” Like coach Irwin said, the 2011 Buccaneer squad can play many different positions and Hensley can do just that as well. Hensley will see time at first, while she also played in right field as a freshman. Sophomore Arielle Garner (Buchanan, Ga.) – who was penciled in as the starting first baseman for the Blue and Gold in 2011 – will have to wait to take the field as she suffered a shoulder injury a week ago in practice. Garner started over 60 percent of the games

5

at first a year ago, so Hensley and Wolff will need to step up and fill the gap as the Buchanan, Ga., native rehabs her shoulder. “We have already suffered a big loss to our lineup in Arielle going down, but we are confident both Whitley and Katie can step in for us at first,” said Irwin. “Hopefully we can get Arielle back in the lineup this season, because she is solid defensively and was hitting the ball well in practice.” Sophomore Sam Lower (Sebring, Fla.), who started in 39 of the 56 games for the Bucs as a freshman, will be the familiar face at second once again in year two. Not only is Lower solid defensively, but she will join Henderson and Baird in the heart of the batting order. Lower hit three home runs as a freshman and started 30 games at second. Splitting time with Lower at second in 2010 was Amy Campbell (Chattanooga, Tenn.), but Campbell is going to move to the right of Lower and be the starting shortstop for the Bucs. Campbell, a 2009 Atlantic Sun All-Freshman selection, is one of the most experienced players on this team behind Henderson. In her first two seasons with ETSU, Campbell has played in 99 games, while making 95 starts. Joining Campbell and Lower in the middle infield slot will be sophomore local product Mikayla Treadway (Unicoi, Tenn.). Like a handful of players on the squad, Treadway is a useful individual as she can also play in the outfield. Treadway saw time in right as a freshman and will play at second in year two for the Bucs. “Both Sam and Amy are going to need to produce both at the plate and in the field in order for us to be successful,” said Irwin. “Sam is an outstanding second baseman and she is going to hit in the heart

6

of the order. Likewise, Amy is a tremendous leader, because she stepped up to take over the role at short without ever playing that position at the collegiate level. She has a strong arm and we are going to need her to get hits in the bottom of the lineup.”

speed. We are going to rely on her to be the spark and energize this team.” Despite losing five starters and six letterwinners from a year ago, coach Irwin and the Bucs hope the new era and hard work in practice carry over to the field in 2011.

In the outfield, junior Annie Martin (Centerville, Tenn.) will see the majority of the time in left, freshman Nicole Fox (Peachtree City, Ga.) will play center, and junior Marlina Delisa (Tucson, Ariz.) will be in right. Martin is the team’s second returning hitter as she posted a .269 average and scored 13 runs as a sophomore. The Centerville, Tenn., native made the majority of her starts in right, but she also spent time in left. Meanwhile, Fox, a switch hitting outfielder, hit a blistering .615 (40-for65) with 11 doubles, four triples and two home runs as a junior at Landmark Christian School in Georgia. She also drove in 19 runs and was 21-of-23 in the stolen base department, while guiding the War Eagle to a 5A Region Championship and State Sectionals. Delisa, a catcher who was moved to the outfield due to her strong arm, made 22 appearances in right last season. Joining the trio of outfielders will be sophomore Tara Hartnett (Snellville, Ga.) and freshman Sadè Johnson (Lawrenceville, Ga.), as they will both be used in both left and right. “We have a great mix of veterans and youth in the outfield, but I think they can all cover a lot of ground with their speed,” Irwin said. “Nicole is going to set the tone for us at the top of the batting order and she has the threat to move herself into scoring position with her

Brad Irwin Head Coach • University of Tennessee, Chattanooga ‘99 • First Season Brad Irwin enters his first season at the helm of ETSU Lady Buccaneer Softball as he was introduced head coach on July 21, 2010. Irwin, the top assistant coach and recruiting coordinator at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga since 2006, brings nine years of collegiate coaching experience to Johnson City. Prior to his four-year stint at Chattanooga, Irwin served as an assistant at Lee University in Cleveland, Tenn., from 2003-06. Irwin began his coaching career under the watch of current Tennessee coaches Ralph and Karen Weekly at Chattanooga from 1997-99. “I am extremely excited to be the head softball coach at ETSU,” Irwin said. “I consider it an honor and a privilege. I would like to thank Dr. Stanton, Dave Mullins, and Barbie Breedlove for providing me with this tremendous opportunity. They have put their faith in me, and I will work extremely hard to build the ETSU program the right way. “We will build the program and compete for Atlantic Sun championships. Everything is in place to build a successful championship-level program with the tremendous academic institution, supportive athletic administration, the community, and the softball facilities.” During his tenure at Chattanooga, the Lady Mocs won seven regular season Southern Conference championships, four SoCon Tournaments, and appeared in the NCAA Regional in 2008 and 2009. Chattanooga has posted 183 wins since Irwin arrived back to his alma mater

8

HC in 2006, while receiving over 25 allconference players, two SoCon Pitcher of the Year, and two SoCon Freshman of the Year selections. In addition to all the accolades won on the diamond, the Lady Mocs also excelled in the classroom by maintaining a team grade point average of 3.0. From 2003-06, Irwin spent his time at Lee University where he worked with hitters and infielders. The Lady Flames had great success over the three seasons Irwin was there, as they made the national tournament in 2004 and 2006, and Lee went 55-14 to finish seventh nationally in the 2006 NAIA National Poll. Prior to becoming ranked nationally, Irwin and the Lee softball staff were named National Fastpitch Coaches Association Staff of the Year after winning the Region XI Tournament Championship in 2004. Irwin also spent time at the high school level as he was the head softball coach at Hixson High School for the 1999 and 2000 campaigns. Irwin graduated from the University of Tennessee, Chattanooga with a degree in Sports Administration in 1999, and also earned his master’s in Secondary Education from UTC in 2002. Coach Irwin is married to his wife Rachel and they have two children. “I would like to thank my wife, Rachel, for her support throughout the years as we have pursued this dream to be a Division I head coach,” said Irwin. “Without her I would not be where I am today. I can’t think of a better place than ETSU to build a championship caliber program and raise my family.”

Andrea Moss

Assistant Coach • North georgia ‘08 • First Season Andrea Moss will begin her first year as the Buccaneer pitching coach as she was hired on Jan. 11, 2011. “We are excited to have Andrea join the ETSU softball staff,” said head coach Brad Irwin. “Andrea will be a tremendous asset to our staff. She was an outstanding pitcher during her playing days and she has collegiate pitching coach experience. I know our pitchers will benefit from being able to work with her daily. She will also be a big help in our efforts to recruit highly talented and quality student-athletes. I am very pleased that we were able to add Andrea to our staff and am confident she will make an immediate impact on our program and with our pitching staff.” Moss was formerly the assistant softball coach at George Washington since August 2009, while beginning her coaching career at North Georgia in May of 2007. During her stint at North Georgia, the Saints finished third at the 2009 Women’s College World Series, while also capturing both the Peach Belt regular season and tournament championships. Moss, who

had the privilege of coaching a First Team All-American and Peach Belt Pitcher of the Year selection, was part of the staff that received 2009 NFCA Southeast Regional Coaching Staff of the Year honors. Overall, the North Georgia softball program finished with a record of 50-5. Along with the success on the field, Moss played a vital role in recruiting and implementing strength and conditioning plans for the players. Moss graduated from North Georgia in May 2008, with a bachelor’s of science in physical education. During her time as a studentathlete, Moss accumulated many accolades and posted 23 wins and a 1.99 ERA in 2007. After recording the impressive numbers, Moss took home all-conference honors in the Peach Belt and she was also named Most Valuable Teammate by her peers. After her time with North Georgia, Moss moved north to take the assistant job at George Washington. Moss handled the recruiting duties and took over the reins of day-to-day operations of the program with the Colonials.

Callie Schaeffer

AC

Assistant Coach • Virginia Tech ‘07 • Second Season Callie Schaeffer (Broadway, Va.) enters her second season with the Lady Bucs in 2009-10. Schaeffer will help with coaching duties such as: speed training, recruiting, outfield workouts and assisting the slap hitters. Schaeffer, who was a four-year letterwinner at Virginia Tech, graduated as the Hokies’ all-time leader in career and single-season stolen bases. Currently, Schaeffer ranks second alltime in career stolen bases, but she is the only Virginia Tech player in school history to record 30 or more stolen bases in three separate seasons. In her four-year playing career, Schaeffer played in 225 games (195 starts) and hit .315 with 102 runs scored and 113 steals. HYDROWORX

ATHLETIC TRAINING STAFF Brian Johnston

Director of Athletic Medicine

Without a doubt the most used piece of equipment in the athletic training facility is the Hydroworx polar plunge pool. It is used by all teams on a daily basis post practice and used by all injured athletes under the care of the athletic training staff. Along with the cold pool is a Hydroworx 500 therapy pool. This pool has a treadmill as part of the floor and two cameras mounted on the front and side of the pool. This gives visual feedback to the athlete and athletic trainer during treatment.

FLUROSCAN The “Mini C Arm” located in the athletic training room allows for quick and efficient exams by the team physician for those athletes that might need an x-ray.

GENERAL ATHLETIC TRAINING AREA The general athletic training area is approximately 3500 square feet and services the day-to-day practice and competition preparation for the entire athletic department. With 17 treatment tables, various modalities and a large exercise area the general athletic training area allows multiple teams to receive treatment at the same time. Attached to the general athletic training area are three private rooms. Each room is equipped with a treatment table and combination therapy unit as well as one other distinguishing characteristic. The “Normal” room is for IV therapy, the “College” room is for casting and splinting, and the “University” room is for traction.

The Center of Excellence for Sport Science and Coach Education The Center of Excellence was established July 1, 2008, and is housed in the College of Education. It incorporates three very important aspects of competitive sports: education, service, and research. The former Sport Performance Enhancement Consortium (SPEC) is now a very active branch of the Center of Excellence. The SPEC program continues to be a collaborative effort between Intercollegiate Athletics and the Sport Science Lab in the Department of Kinesiology, Leisure and Sport Sciences. Buccaneer student-athletes in collaboration with sport science, sport medicine, and the sport coach have the opportunity to have their program evaluated and monitored throughout their college career. This monitoring and evaluation process produces one of the most advanced training environments in the nation. This type of relationship is not found anywhere in the U.S. and offers a unique opportunity for the advancement of athletic performance, athlete and coach education and sport science research. The program is dedicated to meeting the following goals: 1. Providing monitoring services for the ETSU sport teams 2. Supporting and providing up-to-date information to coaches regarding coaching practices. 3. Advising on the Training Process 4. Providing an opportunity for the interaction between sport scientists, medical staff, strength and conditioning staff and the ETSU Sport Coaches.

Over the past decade one of the biggest changes in collegiate athletics has been the new attitude toward strength and conditioning. ETSU’s success on the field could not have happened without the hard work and dedication of each student-athlete in the weightroom. Under the direction of head strength coach Lee Morrow, who is currently in his 26th season at ETSU, the Buccaneers have earned eight Gatorade/National Strength Coaches Association All-American Team honors. With its recent collaboration with the Sports Performance Enhancement Consortium (SPEC) ETSU’s strength and conditioning program has focused its efforts on helping each student-athlete reach his/her greatest athletic potential, in the areas of strength, speed, agility and injury prevention. Located inside Memorial Center, the ETSU’s strength and conditioning complex features one of the finest weightrooms in the area. Overall, the Buccaneers have access to a 7,200-foot facility that features state-of-the-art equipment, including customized full power racks, Hammer-Strength machines, including bench press, incline press, military press, rowing machines, speed mats, pull-up and other impressive array of sports performance tools. Through the SPEC and strength and conditioning web site, ETSU student-athletes have 24-hour access to workout plans, nutrition, and other information that monitors each individual or team off-season conditioning program.
