On ocassions, using a foreign language

But… •

We get better, richer results.

It increases the awareness on our own learning and decision taking proccesses.

Learning inputs are multiplied.

We interact with others, we get to know, we get to be known

It’s fun!

What problems do we find? •

We are social beings, but we have to learn how to collaborate.

Individual solutions appear inmediately, directly.

Inconvenients of collaborative work are easily perceived.

Advantages of collaborative work must be experienced to be appreciated.

What happens when we… - are selfish? we aim at our own benefit

- are lazy? we try to reach our goals with as little effort as possible

- are cheaters? we break the rules if this implies bigger benefits www.etwinning.es Proyectos de Colaboración Escolar en Europa Instituto de Tecnologías Educativas Torrelaguna 58, 28027 Madrid. Tfno: +34 913778377

How can we make sure that our students collaborate? 1. Monitoring the whole proccess: •

We might interfere too much, even being intimidating

We might make students restrict their initiatives

We can never be sure that we are really monitoring everything

How can we make sure that our students collaborate? 2. Designing activities in which collaboration is the • most efficient, • most intuitive, • and easiest

way for participants to reach their personal goals. www.etwinning.es Proyectos de Colaboración Escolar en Europa Instituto de Tecnologías Educativas Torrelaguna 58, 28027 Madrid. Tfno: +34 913778377

How should these activities be? •

Expected final products must force communication, interaction and information exchange among participants.

They must be built on mutual necessity.

They must use the variety of skills and knowledge in the group.

The classroom shouldn’t be seen as a real physical limit: the classroom is in the net.

A continuous and final evaluation must be planned, so it assesses both individual and team work.

Some real examples 1. A frustrated project • •

Science students of 2nd year of “Bachillerato” (previous year to university, 17 years old) Students of vocational training, Personal image and hairdressing (+16 years old)

Can we have a common project for both groups? • What toxic products are wasted every day? In which quantity? • How much is wasted in a month in your town? • What consequences could uncontrolled wasting have? • How can we manage waste in an efficient, safe way?
