ROYAL OAK
Good in the neighborhoods
Some of metro Detroit’s community hubs are undergoing stunning transformations
PONTIAC
By Lee DeVito Downtown Detroit gets all the headlines when it comes to talking about the Motor City’s comeback, and while downtown has indeed drastically changed — we remember the days of the 2006 Super Bowl, when they had to fill the storefronts with art to make it look like it wasn’t a total ghost town — other parts of the metro region have transformed too. Here are some to look out for.

It’s been out with the old and in with the new in Royal Oak. While a number of longtime restaurants have closed their doors in recent years, even more have opened up: though Cantina Diablos closed, there’s now Condado Tacos, and though Bean & Leaf Cafe is kaput, there’s now Proving Grounds Coffee. Other developments see Royal Oak looking up — literally. The city’s skyline has grown, thanks to projects like the Royal Oak Civic Center Development, which includes a new six-story Henry Ford outpatient center and a $63 million project that includes a new city hall, a new police station, and a 581-spot parking structure, while the former city hall will become a downtown park. There’s also a new Hyatt Place Hotel, and in the south part of town is the the Griffin, a forthcoming project that will have lofts and retail.

Pontiac has changed in ways both large and small. On the larger end of the spectrum are massive developments like the M-1 Concourse, a high-end race track and luxury garage on GM’s former proving grounds, and the former Strand Theatre, which was recently restored as the Flagstar Strand. A forthcoming Pontiac Transportation Museum is slated to open later this year. As far as small businesses go, there’s the Alleycat Cafe coffee shop, opened by the owners of downtown Detroit’s 1515 Broadway, and
opportunity to close to focus on renovations, and newcomer Table No. 2, a new white-linen restaurant that opened just weeks before construction began. The good news is that construction recently wrapped up, eliminating a controversial median that been a point of contention for 13 years, with businesses as well as police and fire departments voicing concerns because motorists had to drive too far to do a Michigan U-turn. But the project wasn’t just utilitarian; the facelift brings resurfaced roads, wide tree-lined sidewalks, dedicated bike lanes, and plaques dedicated to the avenue’s historic businesses in the neighborhood. Other forthcoming developments include an $8.3-million project that will transform the former B. Siegel department store into commercial space and 10 residential apartments and a second Motor City Brewing Works outpost.
SPIRIT OF DETROIT PLAZA We have to admit, we weren’t originally fans of the idea to close off the intersection of two of Detroit’s major thoroughfares right in the middle of downtown — we kept forgetting that we couldn’t turn onto Woodward Avenue while driving down Jefferson. However, just because we’re the Motor City doesn’t mean we shouldn’t be walkable, too. Combined with Campus Martius Park and the Woodward Avenue Esplanade, downtown Detroit’s Spirit of Detroit plaza rounds out a pedestrian-friendly urban core with art installations, seating, and food trucks, creating a scenic pathway to the riverfront access at Hart Plaza. It seems that plenty of others agreed: City Council voted to keep the intersection closed, and pledged nearly $800,000 in renovations, including playground equipment, landscaping, a drinking fountain, and other amenities. It’s the kind of place a big-city downtown ought to have, and we apologize for complaining about it.
GRAND RIVER Grand River is getting a new streetscape on a 2.8-mile stretch from the M-39 Service Drive to Berg Road, with improved on-street parking, pedestrian islands, mid-block crossings, landscaping, new signalized intersections, and bus islands.
Exferimentation Brewing Company, a laboratory-themed brewery with classic video game consoles at the tables. For the past two years, the Pontiac Arts Crawl has been held in May to show off the new activity.
MEXICANTOWN The City of Detroit is using $80 million in bond funding to improve neighborhood and commercial corridors across the city to help show that the city’s redevelopment isn’t just limited to downtown. The projects include adding bike lanes and pedestrian walkways, as well as plants and new signage. In Mexicantown in Southwest Detroit, the main drag recently got a $5.4-million facelift that uses a curbless design, with dark bricks serving as a parking lane and light bricks forming wider sidewalks. The result is a wide-open feel that makes the restaurant and shopping hub feel more like a plaza.
THE AVENUE OF FASHION Last year, businesses along Livernois’ historic Avenue of Fashion felt a squeeze as construction began on its $17-million streetscape redesign, among the largest of Detroit’s redevelopment projects. That’s a shame, because the neighborhood has the highest concentration of Black-owned businesses in the city, including neighborhood fave Kuzzo’s Chicken and Waffles, which took the
RIOPELLE Eastern Market’s Riopelle Street is getting a stunning makeover that includes a similar plaza-like curbless design concept as Mexicantown, extended sidewalks, and landscaping. The project extends from Division Street to the Fisher Service Drive.
JOSEPH CAMPAU Joseph Campau’s construction improves the commercial corridor between Jefferson Avenue and the Riverfront, with road resurfacing, bike lanes, improved lighting, landscaping, and a connection to the Detroit Riverwalk.
CONANT The Conant streetscape project extends from Davison to Carpenter, including new sidewalks, lighting, landscaping, street resurfacing, and signage.
GRAND PARKLET The Grand Parklet streetscape project is planned for the corner of Puritan, Plainview, and Grand River avenues, including a park, new sidewalks, lighting, landscaping, and a funky concrete design. metrotimes.com |

We are gonna be friends
How to meet people IRL in metro Detroit By Jerilyn Jordan In 2001, the White Stripes sweetly assured us that we and Suzy Lee were going to be friends. Jack White sings of dirt and worms and playing ball, painting friendship in tender strokes of innocence and permanence. “I can tell that we are going to be friends,” he sings. White wouldn’t lie to us, right? Wrong. Dead wrong. Why’d you have do us like that, Jack?

Fast-forward a few years later and the dreamy schoolyard described in the song transformed into a digital playground. MySpace gave us a chance to pick a Top Eight, as in only eight elite friends (and maybe MySpace Tom!) would make the cut. And yes, drama ensued. Later, there was Facebook. What was originally intended to connect college besties has since devolved into a corrupt corporate pre-apocalyptic wasteland (remember poking?) where your Aunt Becky has the freedom to comment on your every fucking post with some proTrump glitter graphic. Of course, there’s Twitter, where followers are not your friends, just pundits, celebrity PR reps, and clickbait bots all with quippy takes on things no one cares about. And then Instagram happened: a place ruled by tiny validation hearts and photos of your best food, best times, best selves, and even better friends. But guess what: it’s all a lie. Like, seriously. You’re reading way too much into the fact that your ex watched your IG story. Anyway, if one thing has been made actually more complicated by coexisting on these digital playgrounds, it’s the one thing they claimed to make easier: making new friends.
Feel most comfortable when belting it out on a proper stage like the superstar of your teenage dreams? Well, you’ve got options. Look no further than Sunday night at Corktown’s UFO Factory (2110 Trumbull Ave., Detroit; ufofactory.com). The resilient concert venue and gourmet hot-dog spot (they offer vegan dogs, too!) has been hosting karaoke for a few years, and makes use out of its projector, which might just blast old episodes of The Gumby Show while you try out your best Whitney, Celine, or Dolly. Oh, and UFO Factory has a photo booth so you can document your new friendships. There’s also Thursday nights at Hamtramck’s Ghost Light, which also has a substantial stage, and is just one of the performance spaces within the Planet Ant venue complex (2314 Caniff St., Hamtramck; 313-365-4948; planetant.com). Maybe you’re feeling sheepish and want to keep it casual? Try making friends and sing some Sunday night tunes at Trixie’s, also in Hamtramck (2656 Carpenter Ave., Hamtramck; 313-316-5376), where things are a little less flashy and where you can absolutely feel comfortable dropping a request for some rare Bowie B-side. And Mutiny Bar in Southwest Detroit (4654 Vernor Hwy., Detroit; mutinybar.com), which doesn’t have a stage but makes up for it with tiki kitsch aplenty so you can get chummy with a fellow Parrot Head over some boozy island drinks. In Ferndale, there’s the true hole-in-the-wall experience at Sneakers (22628 Woodward Ave., Ferndale; 248-545-8243; sneakerspubferndale.com) where the drunker the better is the karaoke key, and you’ll likely meet someone in the bathroom, as the stalls are separated by shoddy shower curtains. (For the ladies, you get to step over someone doing their business, which is the fast track to friend town.) There’s Midtown’s Third Street Bar (4626 Third Ave., Detroit; 313-833-0603), which offers up vegan fare from Street Beet and is one of the bigger spaces dedicated to karaoke shenanigans, and perhaps the only karaoke spot where you’ll escape judgment, should you want to launch into “Don’t Stop Believin’” by Journey or a Kid Rock classic. Perhaps the most unique karaoke experience is at Southwest Detroit pizza joint Pizzaplex (4458 W. Vernor Hwy., Detroit; 313-757-4992; pizzaplex.com), where host Cole Davis offers what they refer to as “Haireoke.” Davis, a visual and performance artist and comedic emcee, has more than 30 wigs for singers to choose from, as well as wig caps, hair accessories, and bubble and smoke machines.
Lucky for us, living in metro Detroit offers plenty of opportunities to meet people the old-fashioned way. We know it can be scary going out into the world and immersing yourself in the unknown, but we think that by participating in real life you might just have a chance at something meaningful and long-lasting — just like, say, the White Stripes’ White Blood Cells.
VISIT A KARAOKE NIGHT AND FIND A DUET PARTNER Music is always a fine place to start when it comes to finding common ground with some strangers, and singing in front of strangers is a fine way to shake off any social — and vocal — cobwebs. Detroit is speckled with karaoke opportunities to fit whatever your comfort levels may be, and you’ll soon come to discover that each karaoke DJ (Jen David, Polish John, Shan Beste, Natalie Gersabeck, Robby Rob, and others) has, dare we say, their own “vibe.”
If privacy is more your bag, you can warm up to some folks at the bar of Punch Bowl Social (1331 Broadway St., Detroit; 313-749-9738; punchbowlsocial.com), which offers access to private karaoke rooms seven days a week. The same can be said for 168 KTV Bistro (32415 John R Rd., Madison Heights; 248-616-0168; 168karaoke.com), which is basically that one scene from Lost in Translation every damn day of the week. KTV is a full-service karaoke spot that offers rooms for rent during the week and opens its doors to the public on weekends and, yeah, they have a sushi platter menu. Detroit’s newest karaoke addition is Sid Gold’s Request Room (1511 Broadway St., Detroit; 313-444-4653; sidgolds.com), which comes by way of New York City. Sid Gold’s, which was created by Beauty Bar founder Paul Devitt and former Psychedelic Furs keyboardist Joe McGinty, landed in downtown Detroit last year and is wedged between the Siren and Element Hotels. The beauty of Sid Gold’s is that all karaoke is performed with a live pianist, doing away with the cheesy, midi karaoke version of your favorite tunes (although we totally love those, too). Like, how cool would it be to sing Billy Joel’s “Piano Man” accompanied by a real-life piano man or woman? OK, so maybe an uncool song choice, but you get the idea.
CATCH A COMEDY SHOW OR, BETTER YET, BE IN ONE metrotimes.com |
City Guide 2020 | METROTIMES | 21
Metro Detroit has some strong comedic roots. Lily Tomlin, Tim Meadows, Keegan-Michael Key, and Tim Robinson are among some of the notable comedians that called metro Detroit home. But you don’t have to be famous to get in on the funny times to be had around town. In fact, visiting one of the area’s comedy clubs might just crack the code on the impossible art of making new friends. In Ferndale, Go Comedy! Improv Theater (261 E. Nine Mile Rd., Ferndale; 248-327-0575; gocomedy.net) has something for everyone with a funny bone. Though improvisation is their bread and butter most nights — including Friday and Saturday when they host AllStar Showdown, an interactive short-form improv game show that serves as a great entry into the art of improv — Go also puts on nonimprovised sketch shows, musical improv performances, and, on rare occasions, stand-up acts and workshops. (Kids in the Hall star Kevin McDonald is a friend of the show and has been known to lead them.) Maybe you’ll like what you see and will get the guts up to sign up for one of their educational series, which is not only a great way to make friends but also to embed yourself in a community? (What a concept!) And if community is what you’re after, then there’s the previously mentioned Planet Ant (2357 Caniff St., Hamtramck; 313-365-4948; planetant.com), a beloved nonprofit community theater. Hamtramck’s Planet Ant started out as a coffee shop in 1993 before transitioning into a small black-box theater three years later, and, as of 2020, is a sprawling campus of multi-use venues for performers across all disciplines with a strong focus on improv comedy. The Ant (as you’ll soon call it) hosts Monday Night Improv, which features the Ant’s home team and a guest troupe; Thursday Night Live, a comedy variety showcase; and Saturday Night Improv. Also, at the Independent Comedy Club, the Ant’s newest internal venue and stage, welcomes local and national stand-up acts each week. Wanna get in on the fun? The Ant hosts year-round classes in improv, screenwriting, sketch writing, and musical improv, with special workshop opportunities sprinkled throughout the semester.
attend drop-in classes as you wish, if you stick with a full set of classes, you’ll be able to master an entire routine and, who knows, you might find yourself motivated by a twirling pole-mate to twerk a little harder. If more performative workouts get your heart rate up, Detroit’s Santo Santo (8700 Mack Ave., Detroit; santosantodetroit.com) might be a good fit. Described as a “counter-culture” yoga studio, Santo Santo opened in a formerly abandoned car wash in 2019 under the instruction of Samantha Jameson. Classes are broken into four class categories: Move, a high-energy practice; Rest, which offers restorative yoga; Buti (a blend of tribal dance, yoga, and plyometrics), and Kirtan Mashup, which pairs benefits of ancient Eastern chants, movement, and breathwork. Also setting it apart from corporate mainstream Western yoga practices are the four-color-changing LED light strips that run across the studio’s ceiling, which instructors can change to create color combinations to enhance sessions with color therapy. If, in the past, you’ve been successful in making new friends at dance clubs, Santo Santo also offers pre-game dance nights on Fridays, complete with a DJ — but without drugs or alcohol. OK, OK, maybe making friends is hard for you because you’re what some people might call “an uptight asshole.” But even the most high-strung, anxious workaholics deserve friends outside of their coworkers. Instead of “namaste,” how about going nine rounds with your own bullshit stress at Jabs Gym in Detroit’s Eastern Market (2501 Russell St., Detroit; 313-344-1272; jabsgym.com). This boxing gym is a high energy cross-training facility for folks of varying levels of experience. But no matter which class you select, expect to sweat. Like, a lot. In addition to boxing fundamentals, Jabs also offers high-octane kickboxing, cross training, which is a class-toclass full-body cardio workout, as well as BOYO, which combines kickboxing and yoga poses.
There’s also comedy stalwart Mark Ridley’s Comedy Castle (310 S. Troy St., Royal Oak; 248-542-9900; comedycastle.com), which hosts comedy classes and open mics. At Detroit Shipping Co., Midtown’s shipping container food hall (474 Peterboro St., Detroit; detroitshippingcompany.com; 313-462-4973), there’s a free weekly stand-up performance presented by 313 Comedy. And the female-led comedy collective Honorary Mentions produces stand-up showcases through metro Detroit, many of them free at venues like Sneakers in Ferndale and Trixie’s in Hamtramck. (And usually includes free pizza, because isn’t that what friendship is all about?)
“Let’s play,” said no adult ever. This might be the problem when it comes to making friends as grown-ass adults with mortgages and 401ks. Let’s take a leap with body-positive Detroit Fly House Circus School (1321 Watson St., Detroit; 313-674-6424; detroitflyhouse. com), which throws inhibitions, and a fear of heights, to the wind with its expansive acrobatic, aerial, condition, choreography, and contortion classes. You may not be vying for a spot in the circus, but Detroit Fly House not only teaches you how to swing with the greatest of ease but also with confidence, discipline, and teamwork, rather than competitive B.S. ng
GET PHYSICAL!
STICK IT TO THE MAN AND GIVE BACK
Fuck your anti-social (and fascist) Peloton bike, which probably cost you the equivalent of a down payment on a home or car, because who doesn’t need a glorified stationary bike with an iPad attached to it? While the latest home workout trend is basically a bike connected to a competitive social media platform, nothing beats the real thing when it comes to sweating it out. And metro Detroit has an abundance of workout classes, so the first step is to determine what type of activity you’re most interested in and know that you’ll be surrounded by like-minded folks who are at a similar experience level as you are. (Pro tip: use something like the Mind Body app, which can help locate nearby drop-in classes for a variety of activities.) Thanks to J.Lo’s pole-arizing Super Bowl halftime show and literally everything singer and master pole dancer FKA Twigs has put out recently, pole dancing is now being considered for Olympic sport designation. The ladies over at PoleFIT Revolution (1037 W. 12 Mile Rd., Madison Heights; 248-246-2222; polefitrevolution. com) are leading the way with reasonably priced, fun, and accessible beginner and advanced pole classes. Though you can

It could be argued that the best way to meet people is to define a common enemy. If that sounds cynical, it is and it isn’t. Here in Michigan, we’re not only a battleground state when it comes to politics, but we have some deeply unique issues that only we can fight for and against, which is why one of the best and most productive ways to make friends is to align yourself with an organization you can stand behind and, when the time comes, march alongside. Be it veteran resources, LGBTQ+rights, climate change, animal welfare, women’s reproductive rights, environmental injustice, children’s advocacy, prison reform, or voter and union rights, there’s a local organization, or at least a localized chapter of a national movement, in need of your voice and activism. If frontfacing activism feels a bit scary, there’s always volunteering, which, like protesting and participating in marches, is rarely done alone. In fact, most progress is done by working together. (See, that’s not cynical at all!) Visiting sites like volunteermatch.org may help you narrow your focus and pair you with a cause that fits your interests and physical, mental, or time-related limitations.

Tried-and-true restaurants we just can’t get enough of
Make sure you visit these beloved Detroit-area restaurants at least once By MT staff The Detroit restaurant scene never sleeps, with what seems like hot new eateries opening up every single day. But as everyone flocks to those new, buzzy, trendy joints, we can’t help but maintain a soft spot for the tried-and-true places that just really get us, you know? The ones where the soup is always spiced just right and the savory meat falls off the bone. These restaurants seem to intrinsically know us, and they can sense exactly what we need. Even if we get distracted for a bit, we keep finding ourselves going back to them again and again because we just want to be understood, you know? So while everyone else might be chasing after the next hot young thing, we keep a light flickering in our hearts for these underrated spots that just always seem to get it right. Well shit, we’ll say it: We’re in love.
AL-AMEER 12710 W. Warren Ave., Dearborn; 313-582-8185; alameerrestaurant.com In an area well-known for its Mediterranean cuisine, Al-Ameer stands out from the crowd. Family-owned and -operated, Al-Ameer serves delicious dishes, including hummus plates, chicken shawarma, and mujadara (a lentil and rice dish made with caramelized onions). The eatery now has three locations in the Detroit area, and it’s the first Michigan restaurant to take home a James Beard America’s Classics Award. We admire that it uses ingredients fresh from local farms and serves made-to-order entrees.
AJISHIN 42270 Grand River Ave., Novi; 248-380-9850 A tip of the hat to the staff of this cozy and inviting Novi noodle shop, where it seems like prices haven’t changed since Day One. Ajishin serves up classic Japanese udon with a host of toppings that’ll warm even the iciest of hearts every time. In the summer, go for the Udon with wasabi and yamaimo. Also come for the criminally cheap lunch special — it’s worth the wait every time. There’s a reason this favorite spot has been open for over 20 years.
AMORE DA ROMA 3401 Riopelle St., Detroit; 313-831-5940; amoredaroma.com We are in amore. This Detroit mainstay has been serving Italian classics in Eastern Market since 1890. (The spot, previously known as metrotimes.com |

which get topped with a hefty amount of Wisconsin brick cheese. The chain now has plans to go national, just in time for Detroit-style pizza’s growing popularity across the country. Wherever Buddy’s ventures next, it’ll always be in our heart.
NOBLE FISH
Trizest.
45 E. 14 Mile Rd., Clawson; noblefish.syvatta.com; 248-585-2314 We’re always plotting out in our heads the next time we can visit Noble Fish. What was once a small Asian food market with a tiny sit-down sushi restaurant in the back got a major makeover last year. Loyal Noble Fish patrons now have a spacious place in which to stretch their legs, dine, and enjoy. The restaurant’s larger space took 10 months to renovate and seats 42. The eatery also serves prepackaged sushi for foodies on the go who just can’t resist the allure of Noble Fish’s scrumptious cuisine.

Roma Café, changed its name and ownership in 2017 after operating for 127 continuous years.) Amore da Roma is the perfect place to load up on lasagna, fettuccine alfredo, and tortellini with your loved ones. The exceptional seafood menu — which includes shrimp scampi, fresh pickerel, and cold-water lobster tails — and Sunday brunch are standouts.
ASIAN CORNED BEEF 13660 Wyoming Ave., Detroit; 313-834-1819; asiancornbeef.com This is the original home of the corned-beef egg roll, which is something of a Detroit-style fusion delicacy, and we can’t help but crave the unique and original concoction again and again. Egg roll wrappers are folded around a pile of razor-thin corned beef, and the package is dipped into a deep fryer until it’s crisp. In its original form, the cured meat is accompanied by gooey white cheese like mozzarella or Swiss. While Asian Corned Beef has rapidly expanded in recent years, the Wyoming Avenue spot on the city’s west side is the OG spot, which opened in 1982.
AVALON CAFE AND BAKERY 422 W. Willis St., Detroit; 313-832-0008; avalonbreads.net This quaint and friendly neighborhood bakery’s original location opened its doors on Willis Street back in 1997, and we’ve never felt so welcome anywhere. The Detroit mainstay is known for its housemade breads, scones, cakes, cookies and croissants. The full menu also includes breakfast options such as lemon ricotta pancakes and lox toast, sandwiches, salads, pizza, beer, and (sustainably made!) wine. Its loyal patronage led to the bakery opening up several more locations in Detroit, as well as another in Ann Arbor.
BUDDY’S 17125 Conant St., Detroit; 313-892-9001; buddyspizza.com Buddy’s invented the beloved and sought-after Detroit-style pizza at its first location at the corner of McNichols Road and Conant Street. The restaurant opened in 1946 and specializes in the square deep-dish pies,

NUNN’S BAR-B-QUE II 19196 Conant St., Detroit; 313-893-7210; nunnsbbq.com Nunn’s is so quality that we’re scribbling its name on our notebooks. It’s one of the pit-style Detroit classics, where the meat from the ribs and chicken slides off the bone without much encouragement. Down the menu, the potato salad is a zesty side that’s among Nunn’s best, and the vinegary greens are a fan favorite. For dessert, check out the kenta cake, a mildly sweet, frosted pound cake that seems to be a Nunn’s original. We’ll take one cake with two forks, please.
PUPUSERÍA Y RESTAURANTE SALVADOREÑO 3149 Livernois Ave., Detroit; 313-899-4020 Our hearts go pitter-patter for the empanada-like pupusas here, which are made with thick, handmade corn tortillas and filled with cheese, beans, pork, squash, or loroco flowers. A handmade tortilla is nightand-day different from the thin, floppy kind from the factory. And so are the moist, well-stuffed Salvadoran tamales, which are both savory and sweet. The horchata is head and shoulders above the norm, too — it’s made with milk and nutty-flavored morro seeds. For dessert, fried platanos are served the traditional way, with a pool of warm, puréed black beans and another pool of cooler crema.
TRIZEST 33170 Dequindre Rd., Sterling Heights; 586-268-1450; trizest. com A modern take on Chinese cuisine from Sichuan, Trizest creates a balance of flavors and allows for textural interplay that makes the cuisine exciting. The dishes, including vegetarian options, are surprisingly light, clean, and bright, with ingredients that are the hallmark of Sichuan’s piquant flavor portfolio. Trizest also gives us heart eyes because the food’s presentation is impressive, and the portions are huge. If we ever had a misunderstanding with Trizest, we’d apologize and hold a boombox playing Peter Gabriel’s “In Your Eyes” outside its bedroom window in the rain.

Thomas “Nutty” Ingram III brings new meaning to “street art.”

Where the art is
A guide to metro Detroit’s non-traditional art scene By Lee DeVito Art doesn’t only happen in galleries and museums here in Detroit — though we do have plenty of those, too. But we also have an abundance of space in previously underutilized buildings and a greater affordability relative to other cities, both of which have long helped make the Motor City an attractive area for artists.

permanent central location. No matter where you fall on the art or eyesore debate, you have to agree there’s no place quite like the Heidelberg Project on earth. Another location in Detroit that has received international attention is the Eastern Market district (Eastern Market, Detroit), where many of the city’s newest murals can be found. That’s where local print house and art gallery 1xRUN has held its annual Murals in the Market festival every September, inviting local, national, and international artists to transform the walls into vibrant works of art. Though the fate of the festival is in question in 2020, the murals remain. There are also more murals in the nearby Dequindre Cut, a defunct rail line that’s been transformed into a greenway with bike lanes for public use, as well as the Grand River Creative Corridor on the west side, which includes more than 100 murals from multiple artists. Another spot known for outdoor art is the Lincoln Street Art Park. Anchored by Recycle Here! (1331 Holden St., Detroit; 313- 871-4000; recyclehere.net), a community recycling center founded in 2005, the sprawling site includes murals from the likes of Carl Oxley and Robert Sestok, and a found-object sculpture park with a bonfire and stage known to host parties like Butt-Con. (Seriously, an annual celebration of butts. Only in Detroit!) For more found-object fun, head to Hamtramck Disneyland (in the alley behind 12087 Klinger St., Hamtramck), which was created over the course of more than 20 years by the late Dmytro Szylak, a retired General Motors autoworker who began installing the moving sculpture — complete with whirligigs and other kinetic elements — in 1992. After Szylak died in 2015, the fate of the installation was in jeopardy, but an arts group eventually bought the property to look after it — because our art scene would be nothing without community. Along those lines is also the African Bead Gallery and MBAD Museum (6559 Grand River Ave., Detroit), a bead store and outdoor art installation created by artist Olayami Dabls starting in the early 2000s as an attempt at creating an “African Town” like the city’s other ethnic neighborhoods. The sprawling outdoor installation “Iron Teaching Rocks How to Rust” is a musing on race in America, and Dabls will even offer a guided tour. Another offbeat tour is the Detroit Parade Co. (9500 Mt. Elliott, Detroit; 313-923-7400), the 200,000-square-foot wonderland where artisans work on the floats and costumes for America’s Thanksgiving Day Parade. The company offers tours year-round. Hungry? There are plenty of places where you can have a feast for your eyes, as well as your stomach. Trinosophes (1464 Gratiot Ave., Detroit; 313-778-9258; trinosophes.com) has a café that also includes a performance space and gallery. There’s also the Cass Café (4620 Cass Ave., Detroit; 313-831-1400; casscafe. com), a hip restaurant and bar that has a rotating exhibition of art on its walls from local artists. That said, it’s not easy being an artist here. Detroit artists are resourceful and scrappy, making do with what they have. Yet Detroit’s art scene flourishes. It’s precisely that authenticity that makes Detroit’s art scene stand out from the rest. Newcomers have likely heard of the Heidelberg Project (3600 Heidelberg St., Detroit; 313-458-8414; heidelberg.org). Starting in 1986, artist Tyree Guyton began transforming empty lots and even entire houses into found-object art in his neglected childhood neighborhood. A lot has changed since he first started painting polka-dots and assembling found objects into whimsical sculptures. The city tried to raze it twice, and in recent years, vandals have even tried burning it down, but each time, Guyton bounced back. Now, Guyton has embarked on what he calls “Heidelberg 3.0,” which has seen the artist consolidate the sprawling works into a more
Back in Eastern Market is Signal-Return (1345 Division St., Detroit; 313-567-8970; signalreturnpress.org), an old-fashioned print shop founded in 2011 that specializes in letterpress, a technology that dates back to the 15th century. You can buy prints from local artists or sign up for a workshop where you can learn to make your own letterpress prints. A relative newcomer to the scene is Shoot Dope Spot (shootdopespot.com), like a food truck that instead slings art by Thomas “Nutty” Ingram III. Ingram’s edgy, colorful designs include tie-dyed and neon-colored shirts with messages that poke fun at this whole scene, like “Hustle them fake artsy ri¢h kid$” and “I went to Detroit got this shirt and I didn’t get shot.” Hey, like we said, you have to be scrappy and resourceful to make it here — and have a bit of fun along the way. metrotimes.com |

St. Patrick’s Day Parade March 15, 2020; Detroit; detroitstpatricksparade.com Feeling lucky? Good! Because we’re seeing green — a lot of green. Detroit’s historic Corktown neighborhood will once again honor the long-standing celebration of its Irish heritage with a shamrock ’n’ rollin’ parade, traditional music, beer, and a family fun zone for all the non-alcoholic shenanigans. Marche du Nain Rouge March 22, 2020, from noon to 3 p.m.; Detroit; marchedunainrouge.com OK, Detroit might just be one of the world’s weirdest cities, and our annual celebration of a mythological red dwarf does little to prove otherwise. Marche du Nain Rouge is a Mardis Gras-style fête where the city bands together to banish the Nain Rouge, the dreaded little red devil of local lore. The event, which marches along the Cass Corridor, concludes at the Masonic Temple, where the Nain delivers a speech filled with pop-culture references and double entendre. Oh, and then we dance. Don’t want to shame the Nain? You’re encouraged to defend the misunderstood imp, if you dare. Ann Arbor Film Festival March 24-29, 2020; Ann Arbor; aafilmfest.org We get it — you love movies. March 26, 2020; Downtown Detroit It could be argued that all major cities really friggin’ love their sports teams. But when it comes to Detroit, the first Tigers home game of the season is basically an alcohol-fueled religious holiday. Warning: do not mess with a Tigers fan on Opening Day. Curious? Head to Comerica Park or the Tigers’ old neighborhood, Corktown, and you’ll encounter swarms of metro Detroiters drunkenly partying in bars, under tents, or in the streets. Oh, and there’s baseball. FoolMoon and FestiFools April 3 and 5, 2020; Ann Arbor; wonderfoolproductions.org On FoolMoon, the streets of Ann Arbor are invaded with illuminated costumes and contraptions. Hamtramck Music Fest March 2021; Hamtramck; hamtramckmusicfest.com If you want to know what Detroit sounds like, look no further than the Hamtramck Music Festival, where dozens of Detroit-area bands, DJs, and solo artists take over Hamtramck’s bars and nightclubs for a three-day showcase that’s the largest local music festival in Michigan. Motor City Tattoo Expo March 2021; Detroit; themotorcitytattooexpo.com Got ink? Do you want some? Where’s the weed?
Here’s where you can buy legal recreational marijuana in Michigan right now By Steve Neavling In 2018, Michigan voters passed Proposal 1, which makes it legal for any adult 21 or older to use and possess cannabis. It’s been a slow rollout for recreational marijuana stores, which is pretty normal compared to how other states have legalized weed. The first stores opened in late 2019 in Ann Arbor, which is fitting, given that community’s long history in the fight for marijuana legalization, as the former home of activist John Sinclair and the longtime home of the annual Hash Bash. More recreational marijuana stores are opening as different municipalities work out their policies and more licenses are issued by the state, and dozens more dispensaries are expected to open in the next two years. Two-thirds of the communities in the state, including Detroit, have banned recreational marijuana dispensaries from opening, at least on a temporary basis. Many of them are expected to eventually lift the bans. Here’s a list of where you can buy legal weed in Michigan without a medical marijuana card as of press time. (You can find more information in our regularly updated online canna-business directory.) Did we miss one? Send tips our way to weed@metrotimes.com. (And for medical marijuana provisioning center listings, see page 82.)
