» The Hall on the Yard now closed amid lawsuit over unpaid rent

The Hall on the Yard food hall in Ivanhoe Village has permanently closed amid a lawsuit with its landlord over unpaid rent, according to court records. Records indicate that the Hall on the Yard owes nearly $250,000 in unpaid rent. Here’s what happened: The Yard’s parent company, Ivanhoe Place Propco, filed a lawsuit against The Hall on April 15, alleging the hall owes $249,105 in unpaid rent plus utilities. Ivanhoe Place Propco asked the court that the food hall be evicted, in addition to paying the rent. According to the complaint, the Hall on the Yard’s parent company filed for bankruptcy protection in July 2023. They were supposed to continue to pay rent, which did not happen even after notices were served, according to records. One of the hall’s vendors, Shay’s Kitchen, released a statement on Facebook last week, stating that they were unexpectedly served a five-day notice to vacate the premises. The statement also says that Shay’s Kitchen fulfilled all of its financial obligations and that they’re looking for another location to reopen. The Hall on the Yard opened in 2022. It was originally supposed to open in 2020, but faced delays due to supply shortages. Local website Bungalower first reported the hall had closed on April 18.

» The Hammered Lamb faces business hit after Orlando Sentinel shares incorrect health inspection data

Popular Ivanhoe Village restaurant the Hammered Lamb is facing declines in business after an incorrect health inspection report from the state was released and shared by the Orlando Sentinel. The Florida Department of Business and Professional Regulation uploaded data March 25 from an inspection performed days prior that should have been assigned to Ethos Vegan Kitchen in Winter Park. Ethos was previously located at the space now occupied by the Hammered Lamb at 1235 N. Orange Ave. in Orlando — more than 11 years ago. The Orlando Sentinel, which weekly publishes the results of similar inspections and shutdown orders assigned to Central Florida establishments, shared the incorrect report the day it was released. The following day, the data was corrected on both the state website and the Orlando Sentinel article, which was updated with an editor’s note. Hammered Lamb owner Jason Lambert said the restaurant had already been dealing with some lost business due to the major ongoing infrastructure project in Ivanhoe Village. The Sentinel said it will be adjusting its policy on publication of health inspection reports to wait at least 24 hours after their release to allow time for errors to be corrected.

» H&M retail workers at Melbourne Square Mall are unionizing Retail workers at the H&M store at Melbourne Square Mall are seeking to unionize with the United Food and Commercial Workers, according to a petition filed with the National Labor Relations Board earlier this month. This is kind of a big deal — if a simple majority of the 19 workers at the store vote in favor of unionization, this would be the first unionized H&M store in Florida. The union already represents workers at 15 H&M locations in New York. According to UFCW Florida union president Ed Chambers, workers at the Melbourne store reached out to their union with a desire to organize, largely to address issues such as low wages and a lack of full-time job opportunities. He said workers who vie for full-time hours have said they’re being scheduled for closer to 30 or so hours a week, just barely under the number of hours they would need to earn full-time employee benefits from their employer. According to the NLRB petition, H&M workers at the Melbourne Square Mall location will be voting on whether to join the UFCW next Friday, May 3. Chambers says he hopes this effort will inspire workers at other Florida H&M locations to organize, too.

» UCF faculty, students rally to support faculty’s contribution to student success amid salary dispute

Students and faculty of the University of Central Florida rallied last week to uplift faculty’s role in contributing to student success as part of an event organized by the faculty union, the United Faculty of Florida. This came in response to assertions by the university administration that the school has no money to give faculty a raise this year. While some faculty earn well into the six figures, many do not, and faculty shared that some of their co-workers are struggling just to make ends meet in a region that’s seen a rise in its cost of living in recent years. UCF was given

an extra $50 million in new “operational enhancement” funds this year by the state. Of that, $35 million of those funds are unrestricted, according to history professor Talat Rahman, who also serves as the union’s chief negotiator. Faculty said that UCF was unique in that, while other big universities in the state did agree to give faculty raises this year — ranging from 2% to 8.5% across-the-board increases — UCF did not. The rally, however, certainly got the attention of the university. Within hours of the rally organized Wednesday morning, UCF shared with both the press and their employees that they would be working on finding money to give them raises this next school year after all.

» DeSantis signs bill that will mandate lessons on communism starting in kindergarten

Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis last week signed a measure that will lead to the history of communism being taught in grades as low as kindergarten. State lawmakers overwhelmingly approved the measure, SB 1264, during the 2024 legislative session that ended last month. “We’re going to tell the truth about the evils of communism,” former high-school history teacher DeSantis said at the bill signing. Under the bill, lessons on the history of communism will be added to required instruction in public schools starting in the 2026-27 school year. The lessons would have to be “age appropriate and developmentally appropriate” and incorporate various topics related to communism, including the “history of communism in the United States and domestic communist movements” and “their histories and tactics.” State Education Commissioner Manny Diaz Jr. acknowledged that the lessons would be “spread across” all grades. The state education department will be tasked with drawing up academic standards for the lessons.

Florida lobbyists leaned on pols to get a ban on local heat safety and wage laws across the finish line, records show

On the final day of Florida’s legislative session, state lawmakers approved one of the most controversial bills of the year, blocking local governments from requiring employers to provide basic heat safety protections for their workers, such as shade, water breaks, employee monitoring and “appropriate first-aid measures.”

It also bans cities and counties from regulating employers’ scheduling practices and, effective Sept. 30, 2026, from requiring employers they contract with to pay employees a rate higher than Florida’s minimum wage, which is currently $12 an hour.

Florida Gov. DeSantis signed the bill into law, with no fanfare or statement, on March 11, after regular business hours. He later rhetorically distanced himself from the bill, telling reporters during a press conference the day after that “it wasn’t anything that was coming from me.”

Florida’s House Bill 433 — modeled after bills that have failed to pass the Legislature before — almost didn’t make it through both legislative chambers this year, as its Republican bill sponsors added, subtracted and meticulously crafted its language to avoid a political disaster come election time for their Republican colleagues in swing districts. A few of those Republicans ultimately joined Democrats in voting it down.

But records obtained by Orlando Weekly through a public records request show industry lobbyists scrambled in the final days and weeks of the legislative session to ensure its passage, with a direct connection to the Florida House Speaker’s chief of staff.

“I haven’t texted you in weeks–HEAT cannot die” wrote Associated Builders and Contractors lobbyist Carol Bowen in a text message to House Speaker Paul Renner’s chief of staff Allison Carter.

The text was sent at 9:10 p.m. on Thursday, March 7, the night before the final day of session.

“The entire business community is in lock step on this. Thank you for your attention to this concern” Bowen added.

Sponsored by first-term Republican Rep. Tiffany Esposito, HB 433 was a priority of business lobbying groups this session, with backing from the Florida Chamber of Commerce — an influential force among both parties in the state Legislature, representing the interests of business giants like Disney, Publix and U.S. Sugar.

The Florida Chamber has sought to block local governments from mandating things like paid sick leave, advance notice of one’s work schedule, and wages higher than the state’s minimum wage for literally 20 years. Other major lobbying groups

— including the Associated Industries of Florida, an organization largely funded by companies like the Hospital Corporation of America, Florida Blue, and TECO Energy this past quarter — were also in “lock step” on Esposito’s bill.

“Hey…looking for insight on HB 433. Are yall looking to put the wage stuff back on?” asked Associated Industries of Florida lobbyist Adam Basford in a text to Carter, on Tuesday, March 5.

The “wage stuff” — referring to part of the bill that would dissolve local living wage ordinances in communities like Miami-Dade and St. Petersburg — was cut from the bill by Senate bill sponsor Jay Trumbull (R-Panama City) that day, leaving the bill strictly about preempting local heat safety laws for workers. That is, Trumbull’s amended version would solely prevent local governments from doing anything that would guarantee that outdoor workers, such as agricultural and construction workers exposed to Florida heat, would have the right to basic things like water.

“We obviously would like to see both the heat and the wage stuff get through but a little worried about what the Senate might do,”Basford texted. No response from Carter.

“Can I please talk to you about HB 433?” Basford texted again, after 27 hours with no response.

The “wage stuff” was ultimately tacked back onto the bill on March 7, ahead of its final passage, along with a ban on local fair workweek laws (also known as “predictive scheduling”) and prevailing wage laws, which essentially require contractors that receive public money from local governments to follow established wage and benefit standards, some of which can be stronger than standards under state law.

The Chamber argues such mandates create a “patchwork of regulations” that unduly burden business owners. That was their argument, again, literally 20 years ago, and their lobbyists — and political allies — continue to parrot the same talking points today. Public records show the Chamber drafted the “wage stuff” language and emailed that to Esposito on Nov. 14, the day after Esposito initially filed it. As filed, the bill only targeted laws regulating heat exposure requirements for workers.

Metadata on the Word document sent by the Chamber also indicates that the Chamber collaborated with the Foundation for Government Accountability, a right-wing think tank with connections to the governor’s office that has also lobbied for rollbacks to child labor law, anti-union legislation, and tougher eligibility requirements for social safety net programs like Medicaid, food stamps and unemployment assistance.

Esposito is herself president of SWFL Inc. — a regional chamber of commerce in Southwest Florida — and was first elected to her state House seat in November 2022. Last year, she championed a law that similarly preempted local governments from enacting or maintaining local tenant rights ordinances that real estate lobbyists likewise characterized as creating inconsistencies for Florida landlords.

According to email records, the Florida Chamber increased the stakes the day before the end of session. Carolyn Johnson, the Chamber’s chief lobbyist, sent out email blasts to state lawmakers on March 7 urging them to support HB 433. Specifically, Johnson (who texted Renner’s chief of staff Carter to “check in” that day) urged lawmakers to support amendments that would, in effect, add the “wage stuff” back in. Such changes, Johnson wrote, were “important to the business community” in order to “continue to foster a business-friendly environment that will lead to the state’s continued economic growth.”

As an added pressure — or incentive — the Chamber added that lawmakers’ votes on the legislation would be double-weighted in their upcoming legislative report cards. Such reports indicate lawmakers’ support for the Chamber’s priorities, with generally only Republicans making their “Distinguished Advocates” list. (Last year, for instance, the only Democrat to make that list was Orange County’s Sen. Linda Stewart, who’s term-limited from seeking reelection this year.)

Additionally, campaign finance records show the business lobby used more than just their words to push their members’ priorities. Records show the Florida Chamber of Commerce, across its 11 main associated political committees, paid out roughly $1.44 million to the campaign accounts (and PACs) of state legislators and the Republican Party of Florida from Oct. 1, 2023, to March 31, 2024. The Associated Industries of Florida similarly pitched in roughly $1.8 million to the campaign accounts, or associated committees, of state legislators and both major parties (with the bulk going to the GOP) in the same time frame across its six active PCs.

But it wasn’t just the Associated Industries and Chamber vying to get this past the finish line. As Bowen of the ABC of Florida implied, groups representing the restaurant and tourism industries (the Florida Restaurant and Lodging Association) and lobbying groups for the home-builder and agricultural industries were also in support.

Opponents of Florida’s House Bill 433 — which can best be described as a preemption measure — have argued the legislation stomps on the powers of local governments and could result in pay cuts for thousands of working Floridians employed by government contractors.

That threat is tied to the part of the bill that preempts local living wage laws, which aren’t established in all communities, but have been enacted in places like Miami-Dade County, Palm Beach County and St. Petersburg, where Florida’s minimum wage of $12 an hour — or roughly $24,960 annually — isn’t enough for a working adult or family to make rent, let alone live comfortably. Rep. Esposito, the GOP House sponsor of the bill, admitted during

session that employers could decide to reduce pay — the income that supports Florida’s working families — once this is effective.

“Could wages go down? Maybe,” she said during the bill’s first committee hearing. “It’s up to the prerogative of the employer.”

Thanks to a last-minute amendment by Republican Sen. Trumbull, that part of the bill won’t go into effect until Sept. 30, 2026 — the very day that Florida’s minimum wage is officially scheduled to rise to $15 an hour. The preemption of workplace heat safety laws will go into effect July 1 — and there’s no mystery where that policy priority came from. There is not a single city or county in Florida that currently requires employers to offer basic protections for workers who are exposed to extreme heat on the job. But an effort to do so was underway in Miami-Dade County last year, thanks to years of organizing by outdoor laborers, until a vote on whether to approve such a policy was delayed.

Esposito filed the state preemption bill just a week later, preempting workplace “heat exposure” requirements to the state — meaning no city or county can enact regulations stronger than those under federal or state law.

As of today, there is no federal or state standard for protecting workers from extreme heat on the job — only federal guidelines, and a risk of being cited by the federal Occupational Safety and Health Administration for failure to foster a workplace that “is free from recognized hazards that are causing or likely to cause death or serious harm to employees.” That agency, per direction from the Biden administration, is in the process of developing a federal heat safety standard, but that process could take years.

Efforts in Florida by Democrats to establish a statewide standard have gone nowhere, due to lack of Republican support. Democrats are outnumbered by the GOP in the state Legislature more than two to one.

The dangers of a failure to act aren’t hypothetical. A 26-year-old man who moved from Mexico to South Florida for work on a sugar cane farm through the federal H-2 Visa program suffered fatal heat-related injuries on the job last September. The heat index reached 97 degrees the day he collapsed, according to a federal OSHA investigation. It was just his fourth day on the job. The contractor who employed the young man, McNeill Labor Management, didn’t report the 26-year-old’s hospitalization or his death, which is required under law. The contractor faces just $27,655 in proposed penalties, an amount set by federal statute.

According to federal data, an estimated 36 U.S. workplace deaths related to environmental heat exposure were recorded in 2021, down from 56 deaths in 2020. Even OSHA, however, has admitted that records of heat-related illness and death on the job are likely “vast underestimates.”

For Johana Lopez, a local agricultural worker in Apopka, Florida who has seen co-workers pass out on the job from extreme heat, Esposito’s bill feels “unjust.” For the business lobby, the bill “protects small businesses from ‘gotcha’ regulations” and creates “a stable environment where owners can grow their businesses.”

Isaac Sims’ fascination with sumo comes from a background in martial arts. “During lockdown I would watch videos on sumo wrestling, fascinated by it. The matches go so quickly — there’s a thin margin for error, a very fine line between victory and defeat. I remember thinking ‘that would be great in Florida!’”

“A lot of people just think it’s the ‘fat guys sport.’ But in order to succeed you need to be in shape and athletic, just like any other sport,” Dustin Hawkins says.

PUSH IT REAL GOOD

Misconceptions, medals and making it big in the Florida Sumo Association

To say that the 2020s have been somewhat tumultuous so far is a drastic understatement. Beginning with a global pandemic that uprooted the lives of most, the effects of that period of quarantine are still being felt today. However, while the prolonged isolation brought with it a myriad of issues, one silver lining is the fact that

many people used that time to themselves for self-discovery, picking up new hobbies and interests. Some learned to bake bread, some took on DIY home projects, and some learned the art of Japan’s national sport: sumo wrestling.

“It was near the end of the lockdowns, and I had been bored in Jacksonville up to that point. I wanted to look for new things

to do around Florida, when I saw an ad for Florida Sumo. And here we are now,” says Dustin Hawkins, a member of Florida Sumo Association, a sumo sports club based out of Panama City, Florida.

The Florida Sumo Association has been slowly growing since 2017, and attracted new members in the aftermath of

10 ORLANDO WEEKLY ● APRIL 24-30, 2024 ● orlandoweekly.com

a post-pandemic world that saw many people using their isolation for self-exploration. But the growth of the club can’t be attributed solely to lockdown curiosity. Cornelius Booker, one of the leaders of the club, has had an interest in the deceptively simple sport — to win a sumo match, all a grappler must do is force their opponent out of the ring; to lose takes only a touch of the ground with any part of the body other than the foot — since high school.

“I always had an interest in grappling sports and Japanese culture, so combining the two was perfect. I couldn’t pursue it fully back then though, so I did wrestling in high school instead. But I never gave up on the idea of it,” Booker says.

Booker has already seen success in the sport. He is a two-time U.S. Sumo National Champion, and in 2019, he was the U.S national champion in the lightweight division, earning a spot on the world team that year. As a result, he was able to travel to Japan to compete, one of his favorite memories of his time sumo wrestling so far.

While some of the newer members of Florida Sumo may have joined the club out of an interest that is still nascent (when compared to the more experienced members), that’s not to say they take the sport any less seriously. Having recently won his first medal within three years of taking up sumo wrestling, Hawkins follows a careful training schedule in order to

“I had an interest in sumo wrestling as early as high school — I always had an interest in grappling sports and Japanese culture, so combining the two was perfect. I couldn’t pursue it fully back then though, so I did wrestling in high school instead. But I never gave up on the idea of it! In the end if you want to really do something, sometimes you just have to be OK with doing it yourself,” says Florida Sumo founder Cornelius Booker.

maintain the strength needed to compete. “On the days when I train, it can be pretty tough. I wake up at 4 a.m. to run a mile, and then train further by doing powerlifting in the evenings.

I also try to make it out to practice sumo wrestling itself once a week if I can,” he says.

And while stamina and strength training are important to keep up with, a veteran member of the club shared that one of the most important things to train is something that comes as a shock to most outsiders: flexibility training.

“Being limber and flexible is arguably the most important

[continued on page 13]

Veteran Florida Sumo Association member Alejandro Santana says one of the most important training needs in sumo sometimes comes as a shock to most outsiders: flexibility training.

thing to succeed, and a lot of people don’t realize that part. They think you just need to be fat to succeed, which is not the case at all,” Alejandro Santana explains. This misconception is one that still unfortunately dominates the space when sumo wrestling is brought up from those not familiar with the sport.

Despite this lingering fallacy, the club is proud of the work they’ve done in helping to bring attention to the sport in Florida.

“I feel like awareness of the sport has spread a lot; 10 or so years ago there was almost no presence here in Florida, and now there are clubs and events for people interested here to join,” Santana says.

While some other teams around the country may harbor doubts about the legitimacy of the club because of the fact that they are based out of Florida, there are also many that make them feel welcome. As someone who openly identifies as gay, Hawkins attests to how encouraging the sumo community has been, and even says he has been able to connect with other LGBTQ+ sumo wrestlers.

“Thankfully my time in sumo hasn’t had any pushback about my LGBTQIA identity. Most have been super welcoming and have never made me feel ‘other than’! I actually run an Instagram group chat with other LGBT sumo members,” Hawkins says.

Participating in the sport together has also given the team a strong sense of camaraderie, and Booker particularly takes pride in the things they have accomplished together. Seeing the growth of his teammates is one of the most rewarding aspects to the club for him, even outside of the context of the sport.

“Seeing Dustin finally achieve his goal in winning a medal when he came in with hardly any experience in sports was very rewarding. He’s been working very hard, and it made me very proud to see him achieve one of his goals in winning a medal. In general, I feel pride when seeing us all working together and supporting each other.”

Mennello Museum of American Art shows off items from its permanent collection in a show that builds a narrative of transcendence

Winner of a Writer’s Pick for “Best Small but Mighty Museum” in Orlando Weekly’s 2023 Best of Orlando Awards, the Mennello Museum of American Art continues to punch above its weight with its current exhibition. The show installed in several of the museum’s galleries creates a narrative of transcendence through the work of 14 self-taught Black artists. Many are from Florida and several are represented in the museum’s permanent collection.

Despite their lack of access to formal art education, each artist found ways toward self-expression with talent and mastery that make their lack of credentials irrelevant. Many started young. Jesse Aaron, however, started chainsawing wood at 80, carving human and animal figures from stumps and branches to aid his wife’s failing loss of sight. They have startling personality, with each sculpture blending the wood’s character with the figure’s personality. Mary Proctor and Purvis Young, from opposite ends of the state, paint in distinctive styles. Young, a self-taught artist from Overtown in Miami,

has a dour street art sensibility while Proctor’s legendary doors are bright, colorful and redemptive.“The Heavenly Choir in Gold” glows with found-object glory. Four rows of women are dancing wearing old jewelry, gold chains outlining bodies and faces, hair flinging this way and that against a background of painted clouds and blue sky. Nellie Mae Rowe is one of several artists in this exhibit with a backstory almost too difficult to comprehend in our contemporary world. The daughter of a freed slave, she picked cotton on her father’s farm. She married in her early teens to escape the brutal labor and had two husbands before marrying Henry Rowe at age 48, the age at which she began making art. “Bearded Lady” (above) depicts two women gossiping while a third figure parades down the street, presumably the woman of the painting’s title. Its psychedelic colors, the woman’s pink and green dogs, and the flowering vine unfolding across the top of the painting — a visual depiction of the street talk, encircling a man in the background — are like a psychedelic alternate dreamworld she created to battle her harsh reality.

Bessie Harvey, like many of the artists here, began observing and making art at a very young age. She later had 11 children and worked a night shift at a Georgia Hospital. Her “Face of Africa III” is a tree root turned upside down; the brightly decorated tendrils emanate from a central knot which she shaped into an unforgettable wide-eyed, staring black face baring its teeth. And if that weren’t enough to seed your dreams, turn to Alyne Harris’“Devil With Angels in His Teeth,” a large acrylic on canvas that depicts, yes, a fierce devil the color of a raging fire chewing angels, vengeance on his mind. Its urgency contrasts with the subtlety of many of Harris’ other biblical depictions. She is an accomplished painter with a unique hand, a brushy minimalism. Harris and Dr. Porchia Moore, both from Gainesville, will be at the Mennello at 1 p.m. on Saturday, April 27. Moore, assistant professor of museum studies at the University of Florida, will give a talk about the artist’s regional influence on her peers, and the direction of folk art, and Harris will discuss her work in more detail.

Precocious playwright

Ciara Hannon returns to Orlando as the Fringe’s new special events producer, leading several LGBTQ-focused projects. But first, this weekend: An Adele Horror Story

Perhaps the only thing sweeter than celebrating creatives who escape Central Florida and find success elsewhere (like recent LAC subject Cymene Aldinger) is writing about artists who exit and return.

A prime example is precocious playwright Ciara Hannon, who came back to Orlando after receiving a bachelor’s degree in theater from Florida International University and has joined the Orlando Fringe Festival — where they originally found acclaim — as the organization’s special events producer, leading several LGBTQ+-focused projects. Last week, I spoke with Hannon to hear how they’re helping Fringe celebrate “queer joy escapism,” starting by terrorizing college kids this weekend with a demonic incarnation of superstar singer Adele.

Hannon first burst onto the Orlando Fringe scene back in 2019, when they wrote and directed the award-winning drama Leviticus at the tender age of 19.“I think I really have to owe it to my high school theater department,” says Hannon, crediting Winter Park High School and her friend Clark Levi (producer of Lightup Shoebox) for helping bring her autobiographical debut to the stage. “The whole story about this girl getting exiled from her church [because of] who she was — that was my story. … It was received really well, and it’s been a very, very nice roller coaster ever since.”

In my review of Leviticus, I said that “Hannon possesses more maturity than playwrights twice her age,” but her hit 2021 follow-up, An Adele Horror Story — which is being revived at Fringe ArtSpace on Friday and Saturday, April 26-27 — showed off her sophomoric side. Back then, I wrote that this raunchy Evil Dead ripoff “power-sprays a metric ton of slapstick bullshit at the walls, and a surprising amount of it sticks.” The show has changed in a lot of ways since then, but Hannon personally guarantees that the BS is “still there, and it’s still stuck.”

cast, which doesn’t include Hannon herself this time, much to her relief.“I had the most humbling experience ever [on] the first day of rehearsals,” Hannon says,“because I realized I wasn’t the funniest person in the room.”Several performers pull double duty behind the scenes, such as Beth Ann Stripling, who both plays the titular villain and serves as music director.

Although Adele Horror Story looks like a lightweight lark on the surface, each of Hannon’s shows so far has been connected to the cause of “supporting queer art that is saying something.”

In this case, Hannon says they are “fighting against that ‘queer people in horror’ trope of they’re the first to go,” pointing out that the entire cast is female (except for one male-presenting character) and most of the characters are queer.

“It truly is just pure queer joy escapism, and I think that we really, really need that right now. I am not interested in telling another coming-out story or something that is about queer hardship. This is about a bunch of queers trying to defeat Adele.”

For starters, although Adele Horror Story was originally intended to be set inside a stereotypical “cabin in the woods” and staged indoors, after failing to get picked in the Fringe lottery, Hannon changed the setting to a campsite and pitched her tents on the Loch Haven lawn as a site-specific show. “It really was a bunch of Bluetooth speakers, a bunch of hurricane lights and a dream,” recalls Hannon. “By the fourth show, we were performing through rain and helicopters and traffic, trying to do this very high-energy show. I think that made me realize, ‘This is like a lot of fun,’ [and] by the fifth show, we were doing the show out of spite.”

The show’s latest incarnation — which is a fundraiser for both Fringe and The Center Orlando — is still set in a campground, despite being performed inside. But it has expanded into a full two-act show, running approximately 105 minutes with intermission. “We want to make sure that we have the space and time for laughs,” explains Hannon, who also notes that the show now incorporates some additional Adele songs. This production also boasts a brand-new

Hannon’s efforts to cultivate queer voices will bear fruit again during Pride month, when they curate Orlando Fringe’s first Orlando Out Fest — or “OOF” for short — over June 27-30. Hannon, who collaborated with festival producer Tempestt Halstead to create the event, says it will be “a people-first festival,” and that the soon-to-be announced “amazing lineup” will feature Fringe favorites and newbies in genres ranging from musical theater and flamenco to drag and burlesque.

OOF will also offer ways for patrons to interact with the long history of LGBTQ+ art within the Orlando Fringe. “Mama, it’s always been an LGBT+ fest,” admits Hannon, adding, “It would be remiss of me to say ‘let’s do something new’ without celebrating that history.”

Hannon says Orlando Out Fest’s main objectives are to support interest in queer artists year-round, “so that celebration of this type of art doesn’t just end at the end of June,” while also attracting new voices to the Fringe itself: “Hopefully this is going to be like a gateway for getting them into the festival, and diversifying within the festival itself.”

RAMEN-TIC GETAWAY

Kyuramen ladles bowls of soup worthy of a journey out to the UCF corridor

In a town where ramen enthusiasts have no shortage of options in which to get their soup on, a newcomer had better not bring a subpar slurp, ’cuz this city will toss that baby out with its bathwater. But in the case of Kyuramen, a brothfilled bundle of joy founded by Gary Lin, the only thing being tossed are its noodles.

Lin is a ramen-crazed geek who turned his ramen-ya chain into a fixture in Japan and Taiwan before opening 30-plus locations here in the United States. John Zhao, the man behind YH Seafood Clubhouse and Bakery 1908, among other eateries, runs the UCF-area

outpost, and it’s been a hotspot since its debut in the student-heavy sector back in November. They come for the ramen, no doubt, but many a young’un have been lured by a viral little vid making the rounds on the socials.

It goes like this: A fluffy omelet sits atop a mound of chicken fried rice. A server slits the omelet lengthwise to reveal its custardy innards, which unfold over the rice. Curry sauce and a demi-glace are then poured over the gory Cronenbergian concoction known as omurice ($19.99). This “Eggs Videodrome,” as I like to call it, comes with your choice of lemonade or Thai

iced tea — beverages offered by Tbaar, also a Lin-owned concept that has a counter operation in the restaurant’s entryway. It’s alluring!

Another lure is the space itself. At the back of the restaurant, five vertically stacked seating booths shaped like a honeycomb bring plenty of Instagram appeal. It’s certainly one of the more unique seating options in the city, even if the angle of the backrest is more conducive to slinking than slurping. The time to slink would come, but not before we bowed our heads into four different bowls of ramen.

“Kyu,” by the way, means “nine,” and nine types of ramen are offered in shio (salt), shoyu (soy) and miso (fermented bean paste) broths. The “Tokyo Tonkotsu Shoyu” with black garlic, bamboo shoots, corn, wakame, scallions and nori ($16.99) is as classic and pleasing a bowl of ramen as they come. Lush roasted pork chashu straddled the line between meaty and fatty; the ramen egg was expectedly jammy; the noodles, springy and chewy. What stood out, however, was the pork broth itself. Forty pounds of bone cooked for 18 hours lent unexpected levels of umami to the rich liquid. It formed the base of the “Kyushu Spicy Tonkotsu” ($16.99) as well, a blazing bowl we passed around like a dutchie, and ’pon the left-hand side to boot.

With the “Japanese Curry” ($18.99), we opted for tonkatsu — breaded pork cutlet — rather than the chashu as our meat of choice, but the curry’s one-dimensional note was a departure from the multi-pronged flavor attack of the other two. The chicken ramen’s ($16.99) chicken broth was hearty to the core; it even reheated well the next day for some leftover lunchtime soul.

But there are soul-filled bites of the non-soupy variety too — soft, plush takoyaki octopus balls ($8.99), crisp shrimp tempura ($7.99) and fried squid tentacles ($9.99), to name a few. Soul-less purple sweet potato fries ($7.49) proved too mushy to enjoy. The two desserts on offer — matcha pudding ($4.99) topped with red bean and served with a wee cup of milk, and light, floral cherry blossom jelly ($4.99) — provided an antidote to the soups’ relative luxuriance. They also initiated our relaxed postures; I slunk back into the seat of our honeycomb booth to a point where I felt I might fall off. To the side of me was a wishing tree, another hallmark feature of Kyuramen’s decor. I witnessed patrons jotting down their wants and adding them to the tree as I slid further down in my seat. “Send Noodz!” said one of the dangling desires, and I could relate. And as full as I was, I knew damn well what I was wishing for.

Deliver Me — Sweden is devoting an entire series to the question of where to place the blame when a child loses his life to gun violence. Guess they didn’t get the memo that we’ve already settled that here: You can punish the parents, but don’t you dare look cross-eyed at a lobbyist. (Netflix)

Wonderful World — Feeling purposeless after she’s extracted a lethal revenge against the man who killed her son, a South Korean academic takes it upon herself to help people who’ve su ered similar losses. Great, I always thought Touched by an Angel should have been directed by Park Chan-wook. (Hulu)

Premieres Thursday:

City Hunter — The ’80s manga yields an action-comedy series in which a private

detective conscripts the help of his late partner’s sister to solve the poor slob’s murder. The first red flag is when she shows up dressed as an enormous Walther P38 and declares “We are all trying to find the guy who did this.” (Netflix)

Dead Boy Detectives — Dead teens from two di erent eras meet up in the afterlife to tackle mysteries together in a series adapted from the work of comics legend Neil Gaiman. Hey, Hulu: Now you aren’t the only streamer whose Hardy Boys have a bad case of rigor mortis. (Netflix)

Dil Dosti Dilemma — The book Asmara’s Summer yields a seven-part series in which a girl from a wealthy Indian family is excited to be spending a few months in Canada, until she realizes the place is a lot more boring than she thought. But what I want to know is, what are they teaching back home that she expected a rip-snorting good time? (Prime Video)

See, and if I hadn’t told you, you would have thought that was the name of a fruity pinot that pairs nicely with veal. (Shudder)

Knuckles — In a miniseries set between the events of the second and third Sonic the Hedgehog movies, Idris Elba reprises his role as the titular echidna, who has to train a deputy (Adam Pally) while adjusting to life on Earth. Them: The Scare — Season 2 of this Black American Horror Story has Deborah Ayorinde shifting into the role of a cop who’s on the trail of a brutal killer; meanwhile, the legendary Pam Grier has joined the show as her mother. That killer had better not be the neighborhood pusher too, because mama’s packing a lot more than a throwin’ shoe. (Prime Video)

Velma — The show that united America — in revulsion — is back with a Season 2, I guess to see if it can limbo under that 7 percent audience approval it’s currently sitting at on Rotten Tomatoes. Blaming Mindy Kaling for Warner Bros. Discovery’s concurrent decision to shelve the completed Scoob! Holiday Haunt would be a gross and unfair oversimplification of how the industry works. So I say we all do just that. (Max)

Premieres Friday:

The Asunta Case — Revisit the shock and horror that swept Spain 11 years ago, when Chinese-born tween Asunta Basterra was found dead from drug-induced asphyxiation. NEITHER SNOW NOR RAIN NOR HEAT NOR GLOOM OF NIGHT …

Jimmy Tamborello reflects on the victory lap that is the Postal Service’s anniversary tour

Notable not only for their leftfield moniker — one that got them served a special delivery cease-and-desist from the actual U.S. Postal Service — but also a minimal discography of just one essential album, the Postal Service has created a heady legacy for themselves in the world of electronic pop.

Give Up, the band’s first and only full-length, propelled producer Jimmy Tamborello and vocalists Ben Gibbard and Jenny Lewis from the realm of indie heroes to chart-toppers. From its release in 2003 to achieving platinum status in 2012, the vast, continuous reach of Give Up is a rare and welcome anomaly in the fast-forward world of pop.

In a co-headlining run with Gibbard’s other project, indie-rock band Death Cab for Cutie,

the Postal Service is back on the road for a tour celebrating Give Up’s 20th anniversary — alongside the 20th anniversary of Death Cab’s Transatlanticism. As much as it is the bands’ celebration, it’s also a celebration among the fans who continue to find themselves within both of these albums, decades after their release.

“I’ve always felt like you have to follow music because it’s your passion and not try to make it into a job, and then see what happens,” Tamborello shares in a phone interview with Orlando Weekly.

Give Up, which will be performed in order in its entirety every night on this anniversary tour, is a testament to just how strong an impact the Postal Service have made over the years.

Tamborello reflects on the popularity of hit song “Such Great Heights,” and the strange feeling of playing their most-recognized song second to honor the album’s tracklist order.

“It’s weird, like [Give Up] really feels like one whole thing to me. I don’t know if any certain point of it sticks out a lot. I think ‘Brand New Colony’ is a fun one to play live. It feels like it has such a hopeful ending and we get the crowd to sing along with us near the end of the set. So that’s a high point emotionally for me,” Tamborello says.

When Tamborello first collaborated with Gibbard, he had no idea that things would quickly snowball into their forming a band together. He at first just wanted to feature Gibbard on a song for his solo project Dntel. But after a

$45.50-$95.50

weekend of hanging out and recording music together, the two knew they had something special on their hands.

“We just hit it off and enjoyed working together and started talking about making more songs. And then it quickly grew from ‘maybe we should make another song or two’ to ‘let’s do a whole album,’” Tamborello says.

When asked if he could have ever foreseen the twists and turns his career took over the past two decades, Tamborello says he felt his tastes growing up were “too weird” to find success in the industry.

“My dad played instruments and had a little home-studio setup, so me and my friends realized we could pretend to be in a band and make music, so that was my after-school hobby in junior high and high school,” Tamborello says. “I stuck with it ever since then. But I never felt very secure in my skills, it was more really just something that I enjoyed doing. … It just is still crazy to me that [it] worked out how it did.”

Before the first leg of their 20th anniversary tour in fall of 2023, the Postal Service were last on stage together in 2013 — which many believed to be the last they’d see of the group performing live together.

“I don’t do a lot of touring on my own, for my own projects. So I really haven’t been on tour since we did the 10-year anniversary in 2013. I had a lot of anxiety about it before we did the first leg, but it came back pretty quick how to deal with being on the road. So I’m looking forward to doing it again,” Tamborello says.

“I barely ever have been in Florida at all. On the first Postal Service tour in 2003, we played Orlando, but that’s the last time I was there. We didn’t even make it out there at the 10-year anniversary,” he adds.

Upon its release in 2003, Give Up topped the Billboard Dance/Electronic Albums chart, and to this day, its influence runs strong in the worlds of electronic and indie music. The album helped bridge the gap between the two genres, seamlessly blending and creating endless new possibilities for sonic explorers past, present and future.

Tamborello is gratified to see this response up close and personal nightly.

“It’s been really fun. The crowds have been really nice. Yes, it’s been a really good experience in every way. And we’re excited that we’re doing more,” Tamborello says. “I mean, I think if it hadn’t gone so well, I don’t think we’d’ve even made it to the second leg.”

LOCAL RELEASES

Michael Felice first made serious noise several years ago as the leader of Fond, one of the most visceral and intense bands to emerge from Orlando in a long time. Their recordings, though limited, were heaving with dark thrill and imminent greatness. On stage, their cred only deepened with stunningly heavy performances that roared like the noise-rock progeny of Swans.

But Fond’s inferno was burning Felice out. “I’ve always had the idea that all music returns to a preoccupation with the presence or absence of love,” he says.“After having committed myself to a brutal expression of the absence of love with Fond for several years, I was left very drained.”

To balance, Felice started Vestis in 2022 as not just a solo vehicle but a personal antidote to Fond’s all-consuming fire. By the time Fond disbanded late that year (a thing I’m still not over yet), he had turned Vestis into a full band, debuting as a group at Timucua opening for none other than longtime Swans guitarist Norman Westberg. It’s now bloomed into a quintet that includes Margaret Smartt (keyboards, vocals), Nate Roma (electric guitar, backup vocals), Josh Barbaccia (bass) and Christian Viguie (drums, percussion, backup vocals). Their new mini-album, Vestis II, is also their most extensive outing to date.

An intentional detour from the burning rock abyss of Fond, Vestis’ sound explores folk music’s experimental fringe with slowcore’s glacial emotion. Their latest work even runs directly contrary to Fond emotionally as a tribute to love songs. But don’t go getting any Hallmark Channel ideas about this record.

There’s deep beauty here, just not the warm, fuzzy kind. Underneath the spacious serenity, there’s palpable drama in the marrow of Vestis’

songs. It’s an introspection that’s often pregnant with heavy air and latent tension. In fact, this six-song collection has a pulse that can go from pastoral tranquility to droning rustic incantations that could double as suicide soundtracks. Even at the opposite sonic pole, Vestis prove that quietude can itself be intense.

A work of arresting focus, Vestis II solidifies this band as one of today’s most intriguing young Orlando acts. It now streams everywhere.

Even better, see Vestis live this weekend at Modern Music Movement’s next showcase, which is doubly notable as the live debut of new Orlando dream-pop act Shampoo Tears (8 p.m. Friday, April 26, The Falcon, no cover).

CONCERT PICKS THIS WEEK

Joshua Rogers + Derek Dunn, Kate Shults + Jonas Van den Bossche, Jimmy Schaus + Austin Ashe: As a designated bastion of experimental performance, live magic

happens frequently at the Dining Room. Even so, this multimedia showcase promises to be particularly special and sensory as it presents experimental music and film in dynamic, realtime conversation with one other.

The lineup’s sonic half includes noted avant-garde musicians Derek Dunn, Jonas Van den Bossche and Austin Ashe. The video artists are Broken Machine Films’ Joshua Rogers and UCF film lecturers Kate Shults and Jimmy Schaus (also half of Malverde).

Each artist from one discipline will be paired with an artist from the other in three interactive sets. Expect an evening of audiovisual alchemy. And, reminder: The Dining Room is in a private family home, so be extra respectful. (7 p.m. Thursday, April 25, The Dining Room, donations encouraged)

Eugene Snowden and The Legendary JC’s: Due to a stroke last year, local soul superstar Eugene Snowden has gone from being a ubiquitous scene cornerstone to quiet convalescence. However, in an uplifting omen for the health of both Snowden and Orlando at large, he’s making back-to-back appearances this weekend. On deck Saturday is a return of Snowden’s freewheeling and up-close late-night throwdown at Lil Indie’s.

Barely a night’s sleep later, he’ll be rejoining his old gang the Legendary JC’s on the Will’s Pub main stage for a Sunday afternoon soul revival. Welcome back, Eugene, and tear that shit up like only you can. APRIL 25-27

Melissa Aldana

You don’t have to go far in search of new music. It’s being created 24/7, and it’s clicks away at a moment’s notice, with exciting sound being created at a breathless rate. This is particularly evident in today’s school of jazz artists, a school that includes Melissa Aldana as a star student. For the past few years, great fanfare has been made over her as a rising force, with Blue Note

Records signing her and a Grammy nod to go with it. Lucky for us, now Aldana brings her sound to Judson’s Live at the Dr. Phillips Center. You can almost hear the history in her work just by reading the title of her latest recording, Echoes of the Inner Prophet (for Wayne Shorter). Shorter, the dearly departed jazz maestro, and his outsized influence run deep throughout the album. Aldana, who knew Shorter, explained that “he has been a source of inspiration to me for years, especially these last few years. I feel it takes a certain kind of maturity

to understand the full length of his music, and the way that he plays has strongly influenced me on how I want to express my music.” Like the album’s title and its inspiration, Aldana’s art is deeply moving, colorful and beautiful. 7 & 9:30 p.m. Thursday-Saturday, Judson’s Live, Dr. Phillips Center for the Performing Arts, 445 S. Florida Puerto Rican Parade and Festival

Wepa! Celebrate culture and community at the Florida Puerto Rican Parade and Festival in downtown Orlando. This year’s events are themed “Civic Engagement and Responsibilities,” with a focus on civic literacy e orts like voter registration, community volunteering and holding positions in government and public o ce. The parade is dedicated to the Municipality of Juncos “La Ciudad del Valenciano,” a town on the eastern part of Puerto Rico. Over 100 vendors will o er art, food (fingers crossed for good pastelón), products from Puerto Rico and more. The festival also features live music from artists like Crespo, Yomo and Elysanij, along with celebrity appearances and a children’s area. Parade floats and comparsas — groups of musicians and performers traditional at carnivals — will line the streets during the parade, set to start at 11 a.m. The parade

route begins at Robinson Street near Lake Eola and ends at the intersection of West Livingston Street and North Orange Avenue. The festival area, conveniently, begins where the parade route ends. Make a day of it. 11 a.m., downtown Orlando, Orange Avenue and Central Boulevard, floridapuertoricanparade.org, free.

The performances begin at 2 p.m. and end at 7 p.m. General admission to the event is free, but VIP upgrades start at $50 with non-alcoholic beverages, hors d’oeuvre, event re-entry during the show and one seat cushion per person included. Garden of Eden

A meal and a drag show is a time-honored tradition; locally you can partake at the likes of Hamburger Mary’s, Hammered Lamb and Island Time, among other worthies. We’re spotlighting this one because it’s — to our knowledge — the first time that a drag show is happening at the truly charming Winter Park plant emporium The Heavy. The aptly named Garden of Eden features vendors serving up food and drinks in the charming ambience of The Heavy, along with a slate of creative alt-drag performers doing two sets. You can sample sips and bites from the likes of Cholo Dogs, Kraken’s Drowned Nuts, Hanalei shaved ice, the Will’s Pub mobile bar and more. (Sidebar: Cholo Dogs

Tiger Beat

The tale of Orlando dreamcore band Tiger Beat is, like with all rock bands worth their salt, one of triumph and struggle and heartbeats and heartbreaks and ecstatic highs and the lowest of loss-filled lows. But here we are, on the occasion of Tiger Bear’s album release show, an album soon out on cassette — perhaps the most appropriate physical format, if it’s not going to be out in the world as a 7-inch box set on Norton Records — on North Florida’s Bellicose, a great label that’s released some of Florida’s finest, including Black Caligula and Co ee Stain. The sound of Tiger Beat is joyous, direct release, the focus squarely on the ecstasy of expression rather than getting in your (tasty) licks. Live, the focus is obviously on frontperson John Rousseau (also of Mother Juno) but this is very much a (capital B) Band with members drawn from Warm Frames and Leatherette and anyone willing to pick up an instrument. Live, we can’t think of any other bands in recent memory who summon both the just-this-side-ofdangerous sneer of Velvet Underground with the naive openheartedness and desire to connect of a Half Japanese. Sourdrops, Vestis, Eyelash and Uber Crunch open. Is this a scene? Consult your Magic C86. 8 p.m., Stardust Video and Co ee, 1842 Winter Park Road, stardustvideoandco ee.wordpress. com, $10. — MM
