¶ Stop worrying — start knocking on doors instead
In the book The Republican Brain, Chris Mooney states that those attracted to conservative politics tend to have larger amygdala. That makes them more prone to fear. Should their reaction to the recent rally tragedy cause concern? Instead of avoiding scary things, many of them are attracted to conspiracy theories.
One advantage to those theories is that they know deep down they aren’t real. Finding like-minded people is also comforting because relatives tire quickly of the “crazy uncle” phenomenon. Living in Florida, we know these people. Because we rub shoulders with relatives and friends all the time here, we don’t demonize them, and despite their propaganda, they don’t demonize us. Sure, they seem to. A beautiful thing is shared experiences like opera and theater and culture. It’s a mystery why DeSantis decided to cripple that.
Our voices need to get louder. Join up with our like-minded who at least care about sound reasoning. Knock on a door. Make a phone call. The right-wing attack machine media is strong. Media isn’t liberal; it is corporate. Conservatives’ minds are currently roiling. They may have a view, especially those here raised in the Good Old Boy days, of wanting that time back. Don’t get into it with them. Instead of reacting, just be a bit proactive. Ignore national. Look next door. Ask. Let’s get motivated. All politics are local. Don’t withdraw completely. Continue online sharing, yes, but use it as a springboard to jump into real life.
We have good people in our cities who represent us, not themselves. Whether you think there is a storm brewing or just a rain shower, strengthen your county or your city. That is what the door-knocking does. That beats just worrying.
— Catherine Hettinger, Winter Park
¶ This is what happens when we try to cover sports
Re: your recent memoriam on the late Pat Williams — there are references to his “Orlando Dreamers” project and to it being “Orlando’s first professional baseball team.”
First off, semantically speaking, it would be our first Major League team. Downtown Orlando has had professional baseball as far back as 1914 in the form of the minor league pro teams that played at Tinker Field, a site that also hosted Major League and Negro League Spring Training games.
When MLB was in its early-’90s expansion mode, Williams and the then-owners of the Magic, the DuPonts, put together a push for an expansion club. (The two teams ended up in Miami and Denver.) Along with wild statements that we wouldn’t need a covered stadium because of our sunny summers (!), the Orlando group convinced the civic leaders to let the Minnesota Twins move to Fort Myers. The group bought the Twins’ AA Orlando club, redubbed it the SunRays, and sold it three years later when the DeVos family bought the Magic and preferred chasing NHL expansion. This started the slow roll of Orlando losing the eventual Orlando Rays to the Disney stadium (and their move to Montgomery, Alabama) as well as the city allowing Tinker to rot to the point where demolition of the historic landmark was the only option. Orlando’s now the largest metro area without a pro ball team of any level. And we’ll not get started on the Magic’s legacy of sucking up tourist tax dollars and the empty promises of economic effects on downtown ...

There is such a thing as a free lunch — if you’re an Orange County schoolkid; SunRail opens DeLand station at last; a majority of Florida voters support Amendment 4, and other news you may have missed.
BY HOUDA ELETR, MCKENNA SCHUELER, ZOEY THOMAS, AND THE NEWS SERVICE OF FLORIDA
» SunRail’s expansion continues with imminent DeLand station opening
The Central Florida light-rail company announced last week that the DeLand SunRail station will officially be open for business Monday, Aug. 12. The $40 million-plus expansion, which the SunRail commission narrowly voted to approve in October 2020, adds 12.2 miles of track from DeBary to DeLand. The station will be the new northernmost stop for the train line in Central Florida. Local residents will be able to travel from one of Orlando’s three stations — AdventHealth, Lynx Central and Church Street — or from Sanford north to DeLand for about $4. There, they can visit attractions including Hontoon Island State Park or DeLand’s bustling downtown. DeLand is about a 48-minute car drive north of Orlando, with a population less than one-fifth of Orlando’s. Once opened, the new station will act as a northern terminus, with all trains traveling south from there. Train service operates Monday through Friday. It departs every half-hour in the mornings and evenings and intermittently midday. Also up for consideration by SunRail are potential stations at Orlando International Airport and Disney Springs in what would be a $4 billion construction project across the city’s tourism corridor.
» Florida may have to pay businesses’ legal fees after federal judge blocks part of ‘Stop Woke’ law
Florida could face the bill for attorney fees of businesses that successfully challenged part of a 2022 law, dubbed the “Stop WOKE Act” by Gov. Ron DeSantis. Attorneys for the businesses last Tuesday filed an 11-page motion that asks a judge to determine that the plaintiffs are entitled to recover legal fees and costs. The motion came four days after Chief U.S. District Judge Mark Walker granted a permanent injunction against part of the law that sought to restrict business from addressing race-related issues in workplace training — i.e., permanently blocking that part of the law. This came after the 11th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals this year upheld a preliminary injunction that Walker issued in 2022. Walker and the appeals court said the restrictions violated First Amendment rights. Last week’s motion for attorney fees described the plaintiffs’ success in the case as “resounding.” The motion seeks to recover fees for district-court and appeals-court proceedings. The law was challenged by Primo Tampa, LLC, a Ben & Jerry’s ice cream franchisee; Honeyfund.com, Inc., a Clearwater-based technology company that platforms wedding registries; and Chevara Orrin and her company, Collective Concepts, LLC.
» New poll shows majority support for Florida abortion rights measure A majority of likely Florida voters, including registered Republicans, say they would support a proposed constitutional amendment that would add protection for abortion rights to Florida’s state constitution, according to a poll released last week. The new polling conducted by the University of North Florida’s Public Opinion Research Lab found that 69 percent of polled voters would support Amendment 4, which will appear on the statewide ballot this November. The ballot summary reads in part, “No law shall prohibit, penalize, delay, or restrict abortion before viability or when necessary to protect the patient’s health, as determined by the patient’s healthcare provider.” Viability generally occurs at 24 to 28 weeks of pregnancy, according to medical experts. Currently, under Florida law, abortion is banned after six weeks of pregnancy, with limited exceptions that many doctors have found difficult to navigate. The UNF survey of 774 likely voters in Florida found that 87 percent of polled Democrats said they would support Amendment 4, as did 53 percent of Republicans and 71 percent of Independents. The UNF poll was conducted from July 24 through July 27, incorporating both phone and web surveys, distributed to a random sample of likely Florida voters via text message. Voters who said they would “probably” or “definitely” not vote in the upcoming 2024 election were screened out.
» Orange County public schools to offer free meals for students this school year
The school year is rapidly approaching and the Orange County Public Schools system plans to provide free meals to students for the second year in a row. The program, made possible by the Community Eligibility Provision, will provide all students in the district with free meals throughout the 2024-2025 school year that starts this month. No forms are required for students to be eligible for this program. However, parents of students enrolled at new schools Atwater Bay Elementary School, Luminary Middle School and Innovation High School must fill out a Meals Benefits
Application (available online) to apply for the program. The Community Eligibility Provision is a federal service option of the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food and Nutrition Service (i.e., thank the feds) that aims to eliminate meal fees and remove any stigma associated with free meals in schools.
» Orlando calls for artists to contribute to food insecurity-themed exhibits Speaking of which, Orlando is calling for artists to participate in food insecurity-themed art installations, about nine months after receiving a $1 million grant for the project from Bloomberg Philanthropies, Mike Bloomberg’s New York City-based organization. The organization selected Orlando to receive the money in October 2023 through the Public Art Challenge program, which encourages mayors of cities with more than 30,000 residents to partner with artists on temporary public projects. The aim is to support both the economy and the creative sector. The city announced last year its planned installation, “Art Pollination: Building Food Justice Through Creativity,” that will bring awareness to the lack of access to healthy food. Juan William Chávez, an artist, activist and beekeeper from Peru currently living in St. Louis, was signed on from the beginning to spearhead the project. But now the city is calling for a second lead artist to work alongside Chávez. A Curatorial Selections Committee of curators from art museums across the state will select the candidate. Applications, available online, are due Aug. 16. In addition to a second lead artist, the city is also selecting a number of regional artists to help with “community gatherings and breaking-bread events” and almost 100 other artists to participate in various “launchings and happenings,” according to the city’s recruitment call.
Orange County’s School Board already includes one Mom for Liberty. As Jeni Grieger faces off against Stephanie Vanos in a contentious campaign, she’s playing coy about whether she, too, is affiliated with the MAGA-friendly group
BY MCKENNA SCHUELER
Orange County has four school board seats up for re-election in 2024, and there is one race in particular that is drawing concern from liberals over past comments, social media posts and affiliations that indicate one candidate’s support for right-wing policies.
Jeni Grieger, a former teacher and political newcomer running for Orange County School Board District 6, has been accused by her opponents of being affiliated with Moms for Liberty, a far-right “parental rights” organization.
Founded in Florida in 2021, Moms for Liberty has historically organized in favor of anti-LGBTQ policies in schools, including the removal of books from school libraries that they deem inappropriate (often, but not always containing LGBTQ themes) and anti-trans rules regarding bathroom and locker use.
Orange County already has one Moms for Liberty member on the school board: Alicia Farrant, a first-term school board member elected in 2022 to represent District 4. Farrant has argued in favor of restricting access to books she describes as “filth” and has spoken out against efforts by other board members to ensure schools are inclusive toward LGBTQ+ students, amid an onslaught of anti-transgender policies championed by Republican state officials.
Grieger, when questioned by Orlando Weekly about her affiliation with Moms for Liberty, among other policy positions, declined an interview request via an email response through an unnamed spokesperson.
In her emailed response, Grieger denied affiliation with Moms for Liberty, despite supporting similar positions as the group on issues
such as COVID-19 protocols in schools and the treatment of transgender students. (Grieger “respectfully” requested that we include her full statement to Orlando Weekly, in full and without editing, in this article. While this article includes substantial quotes from her response, it is too lengthy for print; however, you can read the entire statement at orlandoweekly.com.)
“While my opponent has hobnobbed for months with politicians and political groups, I have remained focused on how I can support the students, faculty, staff, and ultimately the community of Orange County Public Schools by knocking on doors and meeting with community members and I have not joined a political group of any sorts and have not been endorsed by Moms for Liberty,” Grieger wrote in a statement.
“This is a narrative being pushed out by my opposition because they represent the status quo and don’t want to talk about the crisis that’s happening in our schools,” she continued, in a response identical to one she shared with a dubious resident on Facebook. “I am not a member of moms for liberty and have not been endorsed by moms for liberty. I’m a mom for literacy,” Grieger wrote.
At least one paid advertisement mailed to voters on behalf of the Orange County Democratic Executive Committee indicates otherwise.
One recent mailer, for instance, describes Grieger — a registered Republican — as a “book banner” and places her alongside Republican Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, who is standing behind a lectern adorned with a Moms for Liberty sign.
[continued on page 13]
[continued from page 11]
Grieger’s opponent Stephanie Vanos, a registered Democrat, has also described Grieger as a Moms for Liberty-aligned candidate. Grieger has not officially received the endorsement of the group, nor has DeSantis.
Both Vanos and Grieger are running for an open seat on the school board currently occupied by Karen Castor Dentel, who will run for Orange County Supervisor of Elections this year.
This leaves the seat — in what is officially identified as a nonpartisan race — up for grabs.
Is Grieger as extremist as her opponents claim?
Grieger, a mother of three young boys, is a former public-school teacher who taught various courses at Lake Mary High School in Seminole County, ranging from economics to American government, from 2002 to 2013, according to her LinkedIn profile. She’s a registered Republican running for a nonpartisan seat in a district that leans Democratic. According to county elections office data, her school board district had 58,425 registered Democrats, 36,112 registered Republicans, and 35,452 voters registered as “No Party Affiliation” as of June.
Grieger has largely kept politicized language off her social media campaign accounts and campaign website. The No. 1 issue emphasized repeatedly by Grieger’s campaign is school literacy rates, which she argues are not up to par.
“Our campaign has been focused on literacy since day one, and I am glad the literacy rate of OCPS has received so much attention from my supporters as well as my opponent and their supporters,” Grieger told Orlando Weekly.“While OCPS teachers are allowed to use structured literacy training as part of their personal development points, it is not the standard OCPS uses, and we need to make that our top priority.”
Grieger has specifically stressed a desire for the school district to use “science based literacy programs.” When asked by the Weekly for clarification on this term, Grieger described this as a form of reading that comes from “decades of research in fields including brain science that point to effective strategies for teaching kids to read.”
“This science is incredibly crucial for our students who struggle with learning how to read,” she added, linking to an online phonics program titled We Can All Read.
More controversial than her stated desire to boost student literacy, however, are her positions on social and so-called culture-war issues.
In a candidate survey for the Christianaffiliated iVoterGuide, Grieger demonstrated support for several right-wing positions, including common anti-LGBTQ talking points. iVoterGuide, a division of the conservative and Christian fundamentalist American Family Association, describes itself as “the nation’s largest candidate research organization focused exclusively on information and mobilizing voters with biblical values.”
In her questionnaire, Grieger stated support for teaching abstinence in schools’ sex-education classes, eliminating guidance or resources for unwanted pregnancies from schools, and stated that she disagrees with supporting the concept of diversity, equity and inclusion initiatives.
In addition, she shared that she “strongly agree[s]” with banning “biological males” from participating in women’s sports or accessing other gender-specific spaces for women, including bathrooms and locker rooms — echoing the sentiment of other right-wing elected officials and Moms for Liberty.
“Biological females deserve to feel safe while competing and while in a changing room, as do biological males,” Grieger told Orlando Weekly . “Forcing biological females to share their private spaces with biological males is not fair.”
Like the Moms for Liberty-affiliated school board member Alicia Farrant, Grieger seems to struggle on the issue of transgender rights, despite voicing acceptance of “all” students. On the social media platform X, Grieger’s campaign account recently wrote “Disgusting” in response to a post by Riley Gaines on U.S. House Democrats’ opposition to an attempt to block new Title IX regulations.
“As a school board member, I will respect and treat all families well. I will fight for all students to get a strong education whatever their family looks like. Some families are man and woman, and some families have same sex parents, single parents, no parents and are raised by family, friends, or guardians — no matter what, I will fight for the education!” her response reads.
In a candidate survey, Grieger stated support for teaching abstinence in schools’ sex-ed classes, but did not support ‘the concept’ of diversity, equity and inclusion initiatives. She has also expressed support for locker-room and bathroom bans, as well as banning ‘biological males’ from competition in women’s sports.
Such regulations, announced by the Biden-Harris Administration, aim in part to provide greater protections for LGBTQ students. Gaines, a former competitive swimmer, is known as an anti-transgender activist who has compared transgender identities to “spiritual warfare.”
On same-sex marriages, Grieger shared agreement with the position that marriage is “a God-ordained, sacred and legal union of one man and one woman,” but explained that she also plans to “fight” for all students regardless.
Furthermore, Grieger has also received the backing of Brittney Jones, a local political activist and real estate agent affiliated with the anti-vax Florida Freedom Keepers group. Jones, who also serves as co-founder of the “America First” group Florida Christian Patriots, similarly backed Farrant during her 2022 campaign for the county school board.
Grieger, who is friendly with Farrant, was also photographed at a recent Pine Hills community event alongside DeSantis-appointed state attorney Andrew Bain and Republican congressional candidate Willie Montague. The trio also hosted a community town hall together in June.
Alicia Farrant, in a Facebook post about the Pine Hills event displaying the trio, commented, “I love this!!! Powerhouse leaders right here!”
Montague, a repeat candidate for elected office who is vying (again) for the District 10 U.S. Congress seat currently held by Orlando’s Maxwell Frost, has been known to associate with farright blogger and Proud Boys associate Jacob Engels, and aligns himself with the MAGA wing of the Republican Party. According to a Facebook video, Engels and Montague participated in an anti-abortion counter-protest together back in 2022.
On public-health regulations, Grieger in her iVoterGuide candidate survey shared that she “strongly disagree[s]” with school districts mandating health precautions, including masks and vaccines, to “protect students and staff” in the event of a pandemic.
Moms for Liberty, founded during the second year of the COVID-19 pandemic, built its base in part through mobilizing parents opposed to student mask mandates and quarantine policies implemented to protect students and staff from a deadly illness.
Grieger’s opponent Stephanie Vanos did not submit questionnaire responses to iVoterGuide, which nonetheless labeled Vanos as a “liberal” candidate.
Getting past the ‘culture wars’
When reached for comment by Orlando Weekly last week, local mom and public schools advocate Stephanie Vanos criticized her opponent’s positions on issues that align with far-right groups.
“I have been an engaged member of this community for over 20 years and have spent the last 15 months of my campaign talking with District 6 community members,” Vanos shared. “Her answers, supporters, and financial backers highlight her alignment with the Moms for Liberty agenda and do not reflect the values of our community.”
Vanos, who is leading in fundraising efforts by nearly 3-to-1, has campaigned on creating a “safe, welcoming learning environment” for students. Her policy platform also advocates for eliminating “culture wars and political agendas” in classrooms, according to her campaign website, by focusing on issues students, staff and parents “actually care about,” naming as examples improvements to district operations, access to quality academic counseling and workforce opportunities, and efficient use of public funds.
Unlike Grieger, Vanos’ campaign boasts a full slate of local and state endorsements, including endorsements from the Florida Democratic Party, the Orange County teachers union, Orlando Mayor Buddy Dyer, and organizations such as the Equality Florida PAC and the Central Florida Hotel & Lodging Association. Both Vanos and Grieger have expressed a desire to address issues such as teacher retention, safety in classrooms and better compensation for teachers. According to national rankings by the National Education Association, Florida ranks near-dead last in the country for average teacher pay — an issue that teachers unions (like the NEA) say has played a key role in persuading some teachers to leave the profession or the state.
School board elections in Florida are currently nonpartisan, meaning they’ll show up on the ballot of all voters in members’ respective districts, regardless of political affiliation. Each member of the school board serves four-year terms.
Florida’s primary election is scheduled for Aug. 20, while the general election date is Nov. 5. You can find more information about voting on the Orange County Supervisor of Elections Office website (ocfelections.com). mschueler@orlandoweekly.com

Escape Orlando’s humidity in an airconditioned theater: This weekend offers multiple opportunities to catch fresh productions
With no end in sight to Central Florida’s wet hot white boy summer, there’s no better place to escape Orlando’s humidity than inside an air-conditioned theater. If you’re sick of reheated artistic leftovers, there are some refreshingly original productions premiering this weekend that should help you dry off and chill out.
Fringe ArtSpace’s season started off on a soggy note, with HVAC-induced flooding that shut down the Church Street venue for several weeks. Defying my expectations, they were able to repair the damage in time to reopen for July’s sold-out screenings of The Rocky Horror Picture Show, featuring the Rich Weirdoes shadowcast. Now ArtSpace lets the sun shine in with their first full post-flood production, Sonflower Joy Music’s Soul Pop: Summer of Soul (running Friday, Aug. 9, through Aug. 25).
Meka King, the founder and CEO of Sonflower Joy, is one of the area’s most sought-after singers, starring in musicals like Little Shop of Horrors and The Color Purple and originating iconic roles at Universal’s Wizarding World of Harry Potter and Disney’s Galactic Starcruiser. Now, King and her talented co-stars AC Jenkins, Saige Love, Matt Pablo, Nick Melvin and Shanden Vance are taking audiences on a different kind of cosmic journey, into a galaxy they’ve billed as “filled with pop, love and a whole lot of soul.”
Soul Pop: Summer of Soul is described as an interactive concert experience, whose setlist features an eclectic selection of pop and soul songs — ranging from Whitney Houston, Bruno Mars and Earth Wind & Fire to Justin Timberlake and Taylor Swift — along with original music performed by a rotating roster of guest stars that includes Charlyce Simmons, Raven Iman and Trumaine Lamar. But even before the concert
starts, guests can soak in the summertime vibes inside ArtSpace’s lobby, which will host vendor tables and a gallery show celebrating Black joy through art. “I am excited for SJM’s group Soul Pop to have its very first concert residency,” says King in an emailed statement.“Ten performances at Orlando Fringe ArtSpace is a great way to introduce the community to this amazing group of performers and their art, as well as demonstrate our company’s mission in action. Our goal is to uplift the art and voices of Black creatives and creatives of color, and, ultimately, to display that artistry to diverse audiences. Everyone is welcome, and it will be out of this world!”
Sonflower Joy’s show is a product of the Collective, Orlando Fringe’s incubator that was announced last year [full disclosure: The Collective is overseen by my spouse]. The “deep dive” artistic development program offered the inaugural cohort mentorships, educational opportunities and in-kind services sponsored by the Downtown Development Board, in order to create original productions.
“We’re doing familiar music our own way. We really are friends and family who love performing together,” says King. “We also love giving back. The core of our mission is to create opportunities and raise up other artists. This is an opportunity for us through the Collective, and it’s important to us to be a blessing in return.”
If you enjoy the thrill of taking a chance on a never-before-seen playscript, be prepared to camp out at Breakthrough Theatre this week, because they are hosting their second annual Original Play Festival from Wednesday, Aug. 7, through Sunday, Aug. 11. Described as “a place for theater lovers to find new voices, but with a smaller, more local flair” than the Fringe
Festival, the event also celebrates the company’s 16th year, as well as the first anniversary of Breakthrough’s new Winter Park home at 6900 Aloma Ave.
Entries in this year’s festival include an adaptation of the Roman tragedy Phaedra, featuring Cherran Dea and Sarah Lockard; How I Learned (Not) To Drive, an original solo show created and performed by Jesse Bradley-Amore; Escape, writer/director Jordan Barnett’s psychological thriller set in an escape room; and Solomon Jordan’s metaphysical mystery Revolution, Celestially Speaking. Two of this year’s scripts come from writer/choreographer (and occasional Orlando Weekly contributor) Jodi Renee Thomas: Still Bitchin’: This Bitch Will Never Stop, a sequel to her autobiographical spoken-word solo show A Bitch Like Me; and BWA: Broads With Attitude, an all-female ensemble dramedy starring Suzi Aten, Kat Johnson, Emma Bramer, Grace Wieckowski and Amy Jean Barnickel.
Perhaps the festival’s most intriguing original offering is Florida School Board Meeting (2:45 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 10, and 3 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 11), which schoolteachers Jill Craddock and Jennifer Bennett devised based on actual transcripts. After being riveted by a local school board meeting on YouTube, the pair interviewed school board members from across the state and watched hundreds of hours of public meetings, compiling a cornucopia of crazy-but-true comments triggered by hot-button topics. “It felt like drama, and it was hard to believe it was real,” says Craddock. “Our hope is that the audience will be entertained and moved to get involved in local government. We can’t let the extremists take over.” (Editor’s note: See page 11 for some unplanned synchronicity.) skubersky@orlandoweekly.com

Domu founder Sonny Nguyen will open Rion’s Ocean Room and Gyukatsu Rose inside East End Market
BY FAIYAZ KARA
East End Market has seen numerous concepts come and go in its 11-year existence in Audubon Park, and the food and retail hub is about to go through another transformation.
In May, we told you that Domu, Tori Tori and Edoboy founder Sonny Nguyen would be launching Rion’s Ocean Room and Gyukatsu Rose, a two-in-one concept specializing in poke by the pound and fried wagyu cutlets. A location wasn’t revealed but, as you can probably guess, it’s East End Market.
The two concepts will take over the counter space that Skyebird Juice Bar occupied since the day East End Market opened in 2013. Skyebird closed July 21, with owner Elizabeth Key citing family and other business commitments as deciding factors.
“As discussions about the future of the Skyebird space began, it became clear that we had a unique opportunity to evolve East End Market in a dynamic way,” says Ashley Coggins, director of operations for East End Market.“We are excited for this new chapter.”
Named after Nguyen’s first-born daughter,
Rion’s Ocean Room will launch in late October or early November as a walk-up/takeout-only operation and use the space closest to Gideon’s Bakehouse. Construction is expected to start right away. Rion’s will offer eight to 12 varieties of freshly prepared poke by the pound, halfpound and quarter-pound, in spicy, shoyu and Hawaiian (sea salt and sweet onions) varieties, with the option to enjoy it with plantain chips, tortilla chips or over a bed of rice.
“We are trying to break the mold of the ‘build-a-bowl’ concept that most people are accustomed to,” says Nguyen. “We want to give people a true Hawaiian-style experience that will feel familiar and nostalgic to those who are from, or visited, Hawaii. No frills. Just great-tasting and great-quality poke, like you’d find if you were to walk into Foodland, Tamura’s or a mom-and-pop poke shop in Hawaii.”
Edoboy chef Tyler Inthavongsa serves as the culinary director for Nguyen’s Small Food Group, which includes Rion’s Ocean Room, Gyukatsu Rose and Edoboy. Inthavongsa and Nguyen will source ahi tuna from the Marshall Islands, fatty salmon from Scotland, ono
(wahoo) from the Caribbean and Gulf shrimp for Rion’s menu. Add-ons like krab salad, ocean (wakame) salad, and uni will also be offered.
“We are focusing heavily on sourcing sustainably and responsibly raised fish from around the globe, as well as sourcing regionally,” Nguyen says.
Rion’s will incorporate “blue-green tiles in a striking fish scale pattern” in its design and will be separated by a half-wall from Gyukatsu Rose, which will take on a sleeker look with black herringbone tiles. The 10 counter seats situated closer to Lineage Coffee Roasting will be solely devoted to guests indulging in gyukatsu, or Japanese fried beef cutlets.
Wagyu is typically used to make the comfort staple, which is seasoned, coated in breadcrumbs and given a quick fry before being sliced rare and served alongside a heated mini stone grill. Diners can use the grill to sear their cutlets to their liking.
A host of traditional accompaniments like dashi soup, koshihikari rice, shredded cabbage, potato salad, pickles and various dipping sauces (soy, horseradish-onion) will accompany the beef, along with fresh wasabi.
Gyukatsu Rose is expected to open in late 2024 or early 2025 — “once we have operations running smoothly for the poke program,” says Nguyen.

SCHMANKERL STUB’N
Daniel Gabor’s “modern German” restaurant forgoes the kitsch and focuses on presenting technically proficient dishes like luxuriant beef gulasch, sous-vide pork tenderloin, crisp wiener schnitzel and cheese spätzle made with Comté and Gruyère cheese. ÔMO BY JÔNT
Is Ômo by Jônt the finest restaurant in Orlando? Given the superlative ingredients, preparations and service inside this Winter Park chef’s tasting concept, it’s hard to argue otherwise. INCHIN’S BAMBOO GARDEN
The sizable Indo-Chinese menu at this Alpharetta, Georgia-based chain looks promising but the food, ultimately, fails to impress. Hawthorne Heights throw an emo high-school reunion with ‘20 Years of Tears’
BY HOUDA ELETR
Ohio emo band Hawthorne Heights have been rocking with their fans for 20 years now. And in celebration, the band and their legions of lovers of loud guitars and chipped black nail polish are hosting a reunion of sorts.
Formerly A Day in the Life, Hawthorne Heights went through the seemingly de rigueur ritual of lineup changes before settling on the now rock-solid roster of Matt Ridenour (bass), JT Woodruff (vocals), Mark McMillon (guitars) and Chris Popadak on the drums.
Frontman Woodruff, in conversation with Orlando Weekly, says that the band is working hard on this tour to ensure the nostalgia that fans desire is exactly what they get.
“We’ve been a band for 20 years and we’re constantly just trying to, not necessarily reinvent ourselves, but trying to keep everything fresh while giving the fans the nostalgic moments they craved when they were teenagers,” Woodruff says. In 2004 the band released their debut album,
The Silence in Black and White , rocketing the band to fame. Woodruff says it was a strange thing, fame. “It was definitely weird. … Our album got really big really fast. You know, one year I was working at a gas station and two years later we had a gold record.”
Woodruff says that staying in the Midwest was chill and helped the band cope with the fame they’d suddenly attained. The bandmates worked hard to stay grounded and deal with the ever-changing dynamics of the music industry.
“We did this before cellphones were really a thing, so the first couple years no one was trying to take pictures with us like they are now,” Woodruff says. “And that’s not a bad thing, it’s just a bit different now.”
The band’s adjustment to fan culture and fame was easier at the start, but Woodruff says the process has been a learning curve for everyone. Pushing through and focusing on the music was what got them through it all.
HAWTHORNE HEIGHTS with Thursday, Anberlin, Emery, Armor for Sleep, This Wild Life 5 p.m. Friday, Aug. 9 House of Blues Disney Springs, Lake Buena Vista houseofblues.com
$45-$110
Whether the struggle was mental health-related or not, emo music was there when it felt like no one else was, and that’s why Hawthorne Heights exists. The tour also includes friends and musical fellow travelers like Thursday, Anberlin and This Wild Life.
“The main idea for the tour was to try to get as many of our friends who we’ve been playing shows with for forever, that we know our fans love as well,” Woodruff says. “Selfishly, we like to hang out with these bands because we’ve known them forever and when you do it that way, it becomes a kind of emo high-school reunion.”
Seeing fans sing along to songs that mean a lot to the band is what Woodruff sees as the reason they’re on this tour. With their plans to play The Silence in Black and White in full, fans are sure to leave happy.
“We’re playing every song from the first album in sequence, so I’ve gotta listen to that album again. Which is always super weird, you know, listening to your own music recreationally, I guess,” Woodruff says. “We’ve got to try to figure out a way to create natural peaks and valleys like the album has, to try and create a show out of it instead of just an album.”
The band wrote a new song for this tour, inviting their fans to listen to the unfolding of a career and part of a lifetime summed up in one track.
“Let’s say our band is on tour. We’re on an offday, we’re at the mall, it’s 2005 and we’re going to Hot Topic. You would get mobbed at that moment,” Woodruff reflects. “But everyone just wanted to shake your hand or say ‘hello.’”
As the band evolves over time, Woodruff says he allows the band’s headspace at a given time and real-life situations to dictate how their music sounds and what kind of music they write. Back then, emo was what got everyone through everything, and Woodruff made it a point to bring that authenticity of emotion to the mic.
“You’re never really writing autobiographically, but you take little moments that you’re trying to get yourself through and you craft stories about those moments,” Woodruff says. “There’s a whole truth in there, but you’ve got to embellish it so that it helps the sadness, it doesn’t amplify the sadness.”
The “20 Years of Tears”tour pays homage to that struggle, recognizing the emotional turmoil that the band and fans endured growing up.
“It’s about the last 20 years from our point of view, watching the fans grow up and watching ourselves grow up,” Woodruff says. “All the fun times and all of the awful times that happened over the course of 20 years of our life, are all kind of encapsulated in one song we play towards the end of our set.”
Woodruff says that the song was written with their fans in mind and they released it about three days into their tour. The song, “Gold Econoline,” highlights themes of adolescent tribulations and the relentless yearning of youth.
As Woodruff looks back on the band’s journey, he recalls the local punk scene in Ohio, which built the band’s backbone and fan base slowly.
“People were so interested in the local scene of just going to shows and hanging out at them,” Woodruff says.
Woodruff says the band would pool together what money they had to rent out a spot in a local Knights of Columbus hall. The band would charge $5 at the door (cries in inflation) and invite everybody they knew and just have fun.
With a night of heavy nostalgia to come, the band preps for an evening of tears — very fitting for a venue called the House of Blues.

LOCAL RELEASES
While not the most prolific in output or shows, Orlando’s Vicious Dreams have been one of the more notable punk bands to emerge in recent years. The power trio of Amanda Little (guitar/vocals), James Moudy (bass/vocals) and Andrew Cabbage (drums) have carved a nice pocket for themselves in the city’s punk scene with an aesthetic that punches with sharpness, efficiency and distinction.
On the map of punk rock, Vicious Dreams take a line that cherry-picks some of the genre’s best virtues and rolls them up into smart bombs that last just long enough to hit their targets and leave a burn mark. Powered by high-voltage guitars and upfront melodicism, their charged, upbeat sound is maximum bop and bash. But Vicious Dreams are melodic in a way that’s more evocative of black-leather 1970s power-pop than 1980s West Coast pop-punk. Yeah, much cooler.
To that sweet point, Vicious Dreams’ aboutto-drop sophomore album is, notably, an even more melodic turn for the band. Dropping on Friday, Aug. 9, the nine-song Turn Off My Brain (a title conveniently and cleverly acronymized by the track “TOMB”) lacquers their hotrod guitars with lustrous hooks that are even bigger and better. The net effect hits that timeless bull’s eye between sweet and tough.
As the title suggests, Turn Off My Brain gets into the fray of dealing with anxiety and ADHD in a time when reality itself is so surreal, a condition that seems pretty universal at this point. Regardless, Vicious Dreams manage to sugar the much-needed pill with their best songs to date. Four years after their debut album, Vicious
Vicious Dreams have been one of the more notable punk bands to emerge locally in recent years; their upbeat sound is maximum bop and bash, more evocative of blackleather 1970s powerpop than 1980s West Coast pop-punk
Dreams aren’t just back but markedly better, justifying the wait with a high-impact collection of punk that hasn’t lost its rock & roll. Turn Off My Brain is a tight package of hit-and-fun smashes that punch all the right buttons.
The album is digitally everywhere on Friday, Aug. 9 — and it will be available on colored vinyl on Bandcamp. Better yet, score a copy in-person at Vicious Dreams’ big release show that very evening when they’ll perform with Debt Neglector, Gavl and Tiger Beat. (8 p.m. Friday, Aug. 9, Will’s Pub, $8-$10)
CONCERT PICKS THIS WEEK
Weekend Nachos, Thrull, M.A.C.E., Throwin Up: When retired Chicago band Weekend Nachos got back together last
November to fuck some shit up at their first show since 2017, the lightning lit up the heavy underground. Thankfully, that spark reawakened the beast, resulting in something resembling a full-blown reunion tour that’s on course to leave a path of annihilation right through Florida.
For the Orlando show, Weekend Nachos will be properly flanked by a prime brigade of homegrown talent that includes brutal noise punks Thrull, essential feminist hardcore band M.A.C.E. and grind punks Throwin Up. (7 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 10, Conduit, $25)
PJ Morton: First, the elephant in the room. Yes, PJ Morton is the keyboardist for Maroon 5. Wait, wait, come back. I know. But, look, the man’s also got an entirely separate solo career, and it’s a good one that has nothing to do with that other gig. So please check that loaded baggage at the door. Do that and you’ll be luxuriating in the deep waters of Morton’s layered sound, a moving and complex world of soul and R&B with dazzling international range. (8 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 10, Steinmetz Hall, $39.50-$175)
Oak Hill Drifters: While Orlando’s newest supper club has seen its fair share of swinging sounds this year, practically none have been of the grand old Western variety. Enter local roots combo Oak Hill Drifters to cure that with their brand of revivalist Americana, which rounds up pre-pop country and Western swing into an evocative experience of fidelity and flair. Drew Afualo
TikTok influencer Drew Afualo is on her U.S. trek, “The Loud Tour,” with her sister Deison, promoting her new book and spilling all the tea, hitting 21 cities across the nation — including Orlando’s Beacham. Afualo has made a name for herself on TikTok by uploading content making fun of people who are misogynistic, racist and/or fatphobic. She’s also well-known for her very contagious and loud laugh, giggling all the way to the bank with more than 8 million followers. She hosts her own podcast, “The Comment Section,” as well as another with Deison dubbed “Two Idiot Girls,” on which they discuss the latest online drama, oftentimes inviting guests like Brittany Broski and Caleb Hearon to join in. Afualo just released her first book, Loud: Accept Nothing Less Than the Life You Deserve. The tour is both a celebration of the book and a live performance similar to an episode of “Two Idiot Girls” — in fact, the girls advertised the tour as “an in-depth discussion of truly the dumbest shit, live on stage.” Take cover. 7 p.m., The Beacham, 46 N. “Old
Gods of Appalachia”
This horror fiction podcast drifts like an ill wind into the Milk District this week for a live recording. The award-winning horror anthology affair got its geographically appropriate start in Asheville, North Carolina, and quickly gained a beyond-fervent fan base. Eerie and unnerving tales are set in a skewed and sinister Appalachia hostile to human incursions. [And who can blame those unseen forces, really?] The pod has spun off into a role-playing game and, obviously, this touring juggernaut. The live show is done in time-honored radio-drama style — which still has legs after all
these years — featuring show creators Steve Shell and Cam Collins, along with a rotating cast of players. Is it really “Goth Yee Haw?” Only the cryptids know for sure. 7 p.m., The Plaza Live, 425 N. Bumby Ave., plazaliveorlando.org, $29-$161. — Matthew Moyer

40th Annual Cup-A-Thon
What’s better than buying a handmade ceramic cup? Getting it filled for free. The Crealdé School of Art, a nonprofit arts organization that offers courses and camps out of its Winter Park studio, is hosting the 40th annual Cup-A-Thon event this weekend (an OW favorite!). Visitors can pick from hundreds of ceramic cups, bowls and goblets made by Crealdé instructors and students, all up for purchase. Buy a cup and get it filled with your beverage of choice — all proceeds go back to the Crealdé ceramics studio. 7 p.m., Crealdé School of Art, 600 Saint Andrews Blvd., Winter Park, crealde.org, free. — Zoey Thomas

Aurelio Voltaire
Halloween in August? Only the louche Aurelio Voltaire could pull this off. The dark cabaret singer-songwriter — but always with a sly wink — is bringing his “Halloween Forever” tour to the familiar stage of the Abbey. And there won’t be a soul there, attached or unattached to its human form, not wearing their gothic best for the occasion. Voltaire, known by many for performing songs that Cartoon Network featured on The Grim Adventures of Bill and Mandy, first began releasing solo music in 1994, some on seminal dark-music label Projekt. Since then, he’s released
13 studio albums and several EPs — the most recent of which, The Last Halloween Party, came out in 2023. Voltaire’s a favorite at Dragon Con, hosted the “Gothic Homemaking” video series, penned a comic book … he’s a gothic renaissance man. 7 p.m., The Abbey, 100 S. Eola Drive, abbeyorlando.com, $20. — ZT

0 Miles Per Hour
Despite a moniker that would argue otherwise, young Orlando rockers 0 Miles Per Hour are on a roll. After releasing frenetic singles “Prague” and “0214” last year — both symphonies of garage and fuzz joyousness — the band have been focusing on the stage in 2024. This gig is particularly special. It’s a homecoming show for the band coming off an East Coast touring run, so spirits will be the very definition of high. Local support comes from friends in Miracle, Soap Box Derby, Gravess and Fallen God. If you’re looking for the next wave, it’s right here. 7 p.m., Will’s Pub, 1042 N. Mills Ave., willspub.org, $15. — MM

Leanna Firestone
TikTok star turned indie-pop “it” girl Leanna Firestone is coming to Orlando for a Sunday Social. In September 2020, Firestone, then a student at the Recording Industry program at Middle Tennessee State University, gained a following on TikTok for talking about anime. Soon enough, Firestone combined her anime fandom with indie-pop songwriting chops in “Strawberry Mentos.” The song — about her favorite anime character, Yamaguchi — netted 5 million streams. In 2021, her next
song, “Least Favorite Only Child,” about feeling unwanted, topped 4 million streams, while her follow-up EP Y/N cracked the top 10 on the U.S. singer-songwriter iTunes charts. Fast-forward to now and Firestone is signed with Frtyfve Records out of London and released a new single “Black Box Warning’’ this past May. Anime knowledge is not a prerequisite to enjoy this show. 7:30 p.m., The Social, 54 N. Orange Ave., foundation-presents.com, $25-$75. — Sarah Lynott

Lucky Daye
Pound for pound, this double-stacked bill will be the freshest R&B lineup this week. Although he built a sturdy name as a songwriter for acts like Trey Songz, Mary J. Blige and Ella Mai, NOLA artist Lucky Daye finally arrived once he took the mic himself in the late 2010s. His bold, dynamic songs pack grooves deep enough to pass classic soul muster, but with a sensibility forward enough
to be an undeniably fresh voice. As for L.A. opener Fana Hues, her deeply feminine brew of soul, R&B, hip-hop and psych is a left-of-center fusion that’s greater than the sum of its already impressive parts. She’s a stylish, compelling icon of next-gen neo-soul. 7 p.m., House of Blues, Disney Springs, Lake Buena Vista, houseofblues. com, $35-$59.50. — Bao Le-Huu

BY ROB BREZSNY
LEO (July 23-Aug. 22): I love the fact that Antarctica doesn’t belong to anyone. Thirty nations have research stations there, but none of them control what happens. Antarctica has no government! It has a few laws that almost everyone obeys, like a ban on the introduction of non-indigenous plants and animals. But mostly, it’s untouched and untamed. Much of its geology is uncharted. Inspired by this singular land, I’d love for you to enjoy a phase of wild sovereignty and autonomy in the coming weeks. What can you do to express yourself with maximum freedom, answering primarily to the sacred laws of your own ardent nature?
VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22): Babylonia was an ancient empire located in what’s now Syria, Iraq and Iran. Among its citizens, there was a common belief that insomnia was the result of intrusive visitations by ancestral spirits. Their urge to communicate made it hard for their descendants to sleep. One supposed cure was to take dead relatives’ skulls into bed, lick them and hold them close. I don’t recommend this practice to you, Virgo. But I do advise you to consult with the spirits of deceased family members in the coming weeks. I suspect they have a lot to tell you. At the very least, I hope you will explore how you might benefit from studying and pondering your ancestors’ lives.
LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22): Libran tennis player Naomi Osaka is one of the highest-paid women athletes ever. She is also a staunch political activist. That blend of qualities is uncommon. Why do I bring this to your attention? Because now is an excellent time to synergize your pragmatic devotion to financial success with idealistic work on behalf of noble causes. Doing both of these activities with extra intensity will place you in alignment with cosmic rhythms — even more so if you can manage to coordinate them.
SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21): Scorpio actor Sally Field told a story about an agent who worked for her early in her career. In those formative years, all her roles were on TV. But she aspired to expand her repertoire. “You aren’t good enough for movies,” the agent told her. She fired him, and soon she was starring in films. Let’s make this a teaching story for you, Scorpio. In the coming months, you will be wise to surround yourself with influences that support and encourage you. If anyone persistently underestimates you, they should not play a prominent role in your life’s beautiful drama.
SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21): One Sagittarius I know is building a giant sculpture of a humpback whale. Another Sagittarius is adding a woodshop studio onto her house so she can fulfill her dream of crafting and
selling fine furniture. Of my other Sagittarius acquaintances, one is writing an epic narrative poem in Greek, another is hiking the Pacific Crest Trail from Northern California to the Columbia River in northern Oregon, and another has embarked on a long-postponed pilgrimage to Nigeria, the place of her ancestors’ origin. Yes, many Sagittarians I know are daring spicy challenges, thinking expansively, and attempting fun feats. Are you contemplating comparable adventures? Now is an excellent time for them.
CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19): When I opened my fortune cookie, I found a message that read, “If you would just shut up, you could hear God’s voice.” In response, I laughed, then got very quiet. I ruminated on how, yes, I express myself a lot. I’m constantly and enthusiastically riffing on ideas that are exciting to me. So I took the fortune cookie oracle to heart. I stopped talking and writing for two days. I retreated into a quiescent stillness and listened to other humans, animals and the natural world. Fortyfive hours into the experiment, I did indeed hear God’s voice. She said, “Thanks for making space to hear me. I love you and want you to thrive.” She expounded further, providing me with three interesting clues that have proved to be helpful in practical ways. In accordance with your astrological omens, Capricorn, I invite you to do what I did.
AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18): Scientists at the University of California devised a cheap and fast method for unboiling an egg. Their effort wasn’t frivolous. They were working with principles that could be valuable in treating certain cancers. Now I’m inviting you to experiment with metaphorical equivalents of unboiling eggs, Aquarius. You are in a phase when you will have extra power to undo results you’re bored with or unsatisfied with. Your key words of power will be “reversal,” “unfastening,” “unlocking” and “disentangling.”
PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20): Every week, I imbibe all the honey from an eight-ounce jar, mostly in my cups of hot tea. To create that treat for me, bees made a million visits to flowers, collecting nectar. I am very grateful. The work that I do has similarities to what the bees do. I’m constantly gathering oracular ideas, meditating on the astrological signs and contemplating what inspirational messages my readers need to hear. This horoscope may not be the result of a million thoughts, but the number is large. What’s the equivalent in your life, Pisces? What creative gathering and processing do you do? Now is a good time to revise, refine and deepen your relationship with it.
ARIES (March 21-April 19): Legend tells us that
the first person to drink tea was Chinese Emperor Shennong in 2737 BCE. As he lounged outdoors, tree leaves fell into his cup of water and accidentally created an infusion. Good for him that he was willing to sample that accidental offering. It took many centuries, but eventually tea drinking spread throughout the world. And yet the first tea bag, an icon of convenience, didn’t become available until 1904. I don’t expect you will have to wait anywhere near that long to move from your promising new discoveries to the highly practical use of those discoveries. In fact, it could happen quickly. The coming weeks will be a favorable time to ripen your novel ideas, stellar insights and breakthrough innovations.
TAURUS (April 20-May 20): I hope that in the coming months, Taurus, you will be refining your skills with joy and vigor. I hope you will devote yourself to becoming even more masterful at activities you already do well. I hope you will attend lovingly to details and regard discipline as a high art — as if doing so is the most important gift you can give to life. To inspire you in these noble quests, I offer you a quote by stage magician Harry Blackstone Jr.: “Practice until it becomes boring, then practice until it becomes beautiful.”
GEMINI (May 21-June 20): Wohlweh is a German word that means “good pain” or “pleasurable pain.” It might refer to the feeling you have while scratching a mosquito bite or rubbing your eyes when they’re itchy from allergies. But my favorite use of the word occurs when describing a deep-tissue massage that may be a bit harrowing even as it soothes you and provides healing. That’s a great metaphor for the kind of wohlweh I expect for you in the coming days. Here’s a tip: The less you resist the strenuous “therapy,” the better you will feel.
CANCER (June 21-July 22): I earn my living as a writer now, but for many years I had to work at odd jobs to keep from starving. One of the most challenging was tapping the sap of Vermont maple trees during the frigid weather of February. Few trees produce more than three gallons of sap per day, and it takes 40 to 50 gallons to create a single gallon of maple syrup. It was hard work that required a great deal of patience. According to my analysis, you Cancerians are in a metaphorically comparable situation these days. To get the good results you want, you may have to generate a lot of raw material — and that could take a while. Still, I believe that in the end, you will think the strenuous effort has been well worth it.
Meet Gummybear!
Gummybear (A547419) is 4 years old, solid, and calm. He has been friendly since the first day he arrived, and has paired easily with other dogs. He is affectionate and gentle, and yet, he has been at the shelter now for over 70 days. People just do not see him in the kennels. Besides his temperament and happy heart, Gummybear had some minor health issues that we have worked on with him, and he has gained weight and looks amazing now. He does have one unusual characteristic: Gummybear does not have any teeth. He has the small remains of teeth; and we don’t know what happened to them.
Gummybear hasn’t had it easy, and yet, he still greets every day with love in his heart. He plays outside, he leans in for hugs and belly rubs, and he does not seem to be struggling here. But he’s been here for a long time now, and we want better for this amazing dog.
Orange County Animal Services is celebrating the Summer Olympics and back-to-school with two adoption promotions for the entire month of August: Gold Medal Favorites and Teacher’s Pet. Pets who have been in the shelter’s care for four weeks or longer will qualify as a “Gold Medal Favorite,” and will have a reduced adoption fee of $10. OCAS will also celebrate the people who dedicate their careers to our local schools and children with the “Teacher’s Pet” promotion. The shelter will waive adoption fees for any school district employee (with proper school district identification) who decides to adopt a pet.
OCAS is located at 2769 Conroy Road in Orlando, near the Mall at Millenia. The shelter is open 10 a.m.-6 p.m. every day except Wednesday, when it’s open 2-6 p.m. For more information, please call 407-836-3111 or visit ocnetpets.com.
