Trans Floridians and allies stage ‘die-in’ at Orlando DMV as part of a statewide protest

Trans Floridians and allies staged a “die-in” at an Orlando Department of Motor Vehicles office Friday morning in coordination with similar actions across the state, in protest of new directives by the Florida DMV. The Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles last month announced a new policy that bans people from changing the gender listed on their Florida drivers’ licenses. The move has been interpreted as yet another attack by the DeSantis administration on transgender individuals. Violations of the policy would constitute fraud, according to the January memo from the FLHSMV, and “subject an offender to criminal and civil penalties, including cancellation, suspension, or revocation of his or her driver license.” At around 10:30 a.m. Friday, activists gathered at the DMV office on University Boulevard but were barred from entering the building by Orange County Sheriff’s Office deputies. Lana Dunn, one of the local organizers, told Orlando Weekly, “We’re here today to protest — peacefully, of course — the guidance issued by the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles which rescinds their ability to change gender markers on IDs for transgender individuals.” Dunn said the die-in (which didn’t lead to any arrests) was meant to last for 37 minutes, explaining, “That’s representative of the 37% of respondents to the United States transgender survey here in Florida who reported abuse, discrimination and even assault as a result of presenting an identification which did not match their gender presentation.”

Orange County teachers shouldn’t be forced to pay higher health insurance premiums, special magistrate rules

A special magistrate for the state has ruled that teachers for Orange County Public Schools shouldn’t be subjected to higher healthcare premiums proposed by the school district during union contract negotiations. According to the union, the Orange Classroom Teachers Association, the district had proposed increasing the cost of health insurance premiums by 64% on average, effective upon the last day of the union contract on June 30, 2024 — which the union vehemently rejected as “unjustifiable.” In his ruling on the union’s current impasse with the district over contract negotiations, special magistrate Barry Goldman agreed. The union, which is also currently just fighting to survive the state’s new anti-union policy, has celebrated this ruling, even though some other contract items the union has advocated for, such as a call to establish Juneteenth as a paid holiday, were ruled on in the district’s favor. At this point, however, the ruling is just a recommendation. The union is calling on the school board to accept the magistrate’s recommendation, and has asked community members to contact school board members to ask them to do the same.

“white culture” and “white supremacy.” The comments came as the Community Affairs Committee passed the bill. “There are problems with the bill,” Passidomo said. “More than that, there are problems in perceptions among our caucus, on all sides. So, I’m going to take that into consideration. I’m not going to bring a bill to the floor that is so abhorrent to everybody.” Democrats on the committee walked out before Tuesday’s vote. Passidomo said that was because of the public comments, not the bill. Senate sponsor Jonathan Martin, R-Fort Myers, argued that his bill and intentions have been mischaracterized as protecting the Confederacy. Under the proposal, monuments and memorials on public property would be protected and people and groups would have legal standing to file civil lawsuits over their removal or destruction by local officials. The measure also would direct courts to invalidate local ordinances on displacing memorials.

Florida Senate drops the ball on attempt to restrict flags with ‘political viewpoint’

An effort to restrict what flags can be flown at schools and other public buildings flailed in the Florida Senate last week, after a key committee adjourned before members voted on the proposal. The measure (SB 1120) would prohibit government agencies, public schools, colleges and universities from flying any flag that “represents a political viewpoint” including any “politically partisan, racial, sexual orientation and gender, or political ideology viewpoint.” Debate surrounding the bill has focused heavily on the potential that it could bar LGBTQ pride flags at public buildings. Sen. Tina Polsky, D-Boca Raton, argued during Tuesday’s meeting of the Governmental Oversight Committee that the prohibitions listed in the bill involve groups of people, not inherently political viewpoints. “Race, gender, sexual orientation, religion are not political unto themselves. So, we should be as inclusive as possible. Not exclusive,” Polsky said.

Florida sees first major purge of public unions following passage of anti-union law

Thousands of public workers in Florida last month — from garbage collectors to school bus drivers and city workers who fix malfunctioning stoplights — lost their union representation as a result of anti-union legislation signed into law last year. According to public records, the state Public Employees Relations Commission has decertified over 30 bargaining units since October, when the changes to Chapter 447 of the Florida Statutes in SB 256 fully took effect. Most were unions affiliated with AFSCME, one of the state’s largest unions representing public employees. Thousands of people employed by the state lost their union representation as a result of this decertification, killing union contracts covering things like wages, working conditions and job benefits. Under the new law, at least 60% of workers covered by a union have to be dues-paying members in order for the union to remain certified. That’s difficult in a right-to-work state where you don’t have to pay dues in order to benefit from a union that covers your job. Some of these now-decertified units were established decades ago.

Proposal to protect Confederate monuments may be dead over public comments about ‘white culture’

Senate President Kathleen Passidomo last Wednesday raised questions about the fate of a proposal to protect historic monuments and memorials after several lawmakers voiced outrage over comments Tuesday by supporters of the bill. Florida bill that would give construction companies more child laborers advances with Democratic support BY MCKENNA S CH UEL ER

lorida Democrats have joined Republican state lawmakers in supporting a bill that would weaken the state’s child labor protections, relying on changes made by the Republican bill sponsor to water it down. The Florida Senate Appropriations Committee on Education unanimously approved the bill Thursday in a 7–0 vote by five Republicans and two Democrats. While Democrats still don’t agree with Republicans on abortion rights or rights for transgender Floridians, state lawmakers appear to have found common ground on conceding to deep-pocketed industry groups that want to help employers in the construction industry fill labor shortages. Senate Bill 460, sponsored by first-term Sen. Corey Simon, would amend Florida law to explicitly allow 16- and 17-year-olds to work jobs on residential construction sites that are currently prohibited for minors due to health and safety concerns. Currently, minors are only allowed to be employed in what the government defines as “hazardous” jobs if they are doing so as part of a federally approved apprentice or student learner program, which are subject to strict regulations and supervisory requirements. Federal law also prohibits minors from working “on or about a roof,” although office or sales work for construction companies is permissible.

The Republican senator’s proposal, reflecting a trend of similar proposals across the country, is folded into a broader bill written by lobbyists for the construction and home builders industries that would otherwise enhance career and technical education opportunities in Florida’s public school system (something no one is opposed to). Since the bill was first filed in November, Simon has amended the legislation several times, after facing public pressure, specifically to clarify that minors would not be able to work on roofs, scaffolding or superstructures more than six feet off the ground, nor work on commercial construction sites. Simon has also clarified in the bill that no minor would be permitted to work in violation of any federal labor law, including the Fair Labor Standards Act (which sets a federal baseline for child labor standards) or any rules from the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA). The legislation passed its first committee hearing Wednesday, despite opposition from the Florida PTA and others. Other safeguards, such as requiring older teens to first obtain OSHA-10 certification and to work under the supervision of an adult 21 or older who has at least two years’ experience in the industry, are also included in the legislation. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, however, there is only one direct

supervisor on construction and extraction sites in Florida for every seven workers, as it is. Behind agriculture, construction is the deadliest industry for youth, who are more likely to be injured on the job compared to their older counterparts. Opponents have pointed out that children may also be less likely to speak up if their boss isn’t paying them what they’re owed, or works them overtime without extra pay. This kind of behavior — wage theft — is common in the construction industry, and Florida has no meaningful mechanism for combating it. Florida Sen. Tracie Davis, a Democrat, pleaded with Sen. Simon on Thursday to better explain how safe and prudent his legislation really is, as Davis continues to hear concerns from labor and social advocacy groups in opposition to it. “I just want the sponsor of the bill to stress how we are not talking about a 16- or 17-yearold going up on a roof [anymore],” said Davis. “Enforcement is very important.” Davis has a point. Enforcement of child labor law is, in fact, important. And there’s very little capacity for it in this state already. According to the Department of Business and Professional Regulations, there are just seven state personnel dedicated to enforcing Florida’s child labor law across the state, tasked with covering thousands of businesses. Both the U.S. Department of Labor’s Wage and Hour Division and OSHA can also investigate alleged violations of regulations on hazardous work and child labor. But enforcement personnel from those agencies are also in limited supply. There were just about 75 OSHA employees tasked with monitoring Florida businesses as of 2021, and the WHD division has said it is operating with “historically low staffing levels.” The latter has been flat-funded by U.S. Congress for years. Florida relies on federal OSHA regulators to conduct workplace inspections and investigate complaints, and has done so since state lawmakers and then-Gov. Jeb Bush abolished the state Department of Labor and Economic Security in 2002. Dr. Rich Templin, lobbyist for the Florida AFLCIO, told state lawmakers on Thursday, “There’s so few OSHA investigators in the state of Florida, it would take hundreds of years to investigate all job sites.” The AFL-CIO estimated in 2022 that, with the agency’s current staffing levels, it would take OSHA over 200 years to conduct inspections at the millions of workplaces under its jurisdiction even once. Theresa King, president of the Florida Building and Construction Trades Council, told lawmakers that although her organization supports the idea of drawing more young people into the construction industry, enforcement of safety standards for youth remains a concern. “We would like to see a few more safety provisions in the bill,” said King. “I’m a construction worker, and I know how it is out there.” Construction happens to be one of the most common industries in which child labor violations occur, according to the U.S. Department

of Labor, and failing to follow the law can have devastating, long-term consequences for youth. At best, when safety guidelines aren’t followed, a child may be injured on the job. At worst, they may suffer a permanent, debilitating injury or even die in the interest of learning a new trade or supporting their family’s ability to eat or pay rent. Sen. Keith Perry, who owns a roofing company in Alachua County, conceded that there are already employers who violate federal labor law (he would know), but argued that this bill won’t change that in any meaningful way. “I started roofing when I was 16 years old. I started my business when I was 17 years old — which was illegal, is still illegal, and will be illegal under this bill,” said Perry, in his own interesting way of defending the legislation. “People who break the law are not going to follow the law anyway, whether this bill is passed or not.” The bill’s primary cheerleaders — including the Florida Home Builders Association and Associated Builders and Contractors — argue that the bill will help fill gaps in Florida’s school system, which doesn’t offer construction courses for teens (in a safe environment) in all Florida counties. Supporters also point to current and looming labor shortages in the industry as more older workers retire to emphasize the need for drawing more young people into the trades. “More than 50% of the industry is 50 years of age or older and retiring, and we are just uniformly working to expose students in school to career and technical education opportunities,” said Carol Bowen, lobbyist for the ABC of Florida, during a committee hearing for the House version of the bill, HB 917. Sen. Simon, who was fed draft language for the Senate bill by Bowen in October, has defended his legislation by gaslighting the bill’s critics, arguing that they are unnecessarily causing “confusion” that “doesn’t help our kids.” “These are young people that are looking for an opportunity, and looking to find an interest that they can turn into a really successful career,” Simon said in closing. Sen. Shevrin Jones, the only other Democrat on the Senate panel with Davis, voted with his colleagues in favor of moving the legislation forward without comment. The bill has also (tellingly) garnered the support of Americans for Prosperity, aka the “union-hating Koch brothers’ lobbying arm.” The House version of the bill, HB 917, has similarly cleared its first two committees with support from some Democrats. The legislation would need support from both the full House and Senate in order to pass. Meanwhile, the Republican-dominated legislature is also trying to extend the number of hours older teens can work, make it even harder for adults to access unemployment benefits, and prohibit local governments from requiring their contractors to provide cooling measures like water and shade to employees who work outdoors. mschueler@orlandoweekly.com

and anarchic music chronicler, a pair of brothers redefining Orlando’s food scene, some of Orlando’s most committed activists, the tireless thinker behind the crucial movement to preserve Eatonville, a curator making Casselberry an unlikely arts hub, and a vital mover in Orlando’s DIY underground. Each one contributes to the vibrant interconnectedness that makes Orlando what it is. TERRI BINION

ew figures are as emblematic of Orlando music as Terri Binion. A product of our scene who now works to cultivate its next generations, she carries our history, our present and our future all at once. Through her decades of gorgeous music and gripping live performances, Binion is almost universally regarded as the area’s doyenne of Americana. She launched her recording career here with 1996’s Leavin’ This Town, a debut album that featured star players like Billy Joel drummer Liberty DeVitto and immediately put Binion on the map. She went on to tour widely, including a run with the Indigo Girls, and followed up with 2002 album Fool that even featured Lucinda Williams. In 2016, Binion reemerged with the excellent The Day After the Night Before album and has been a steady scene presence ever since, regularly performing headlining concerts at venues like Will’s Pub and Blue Bamboo Center for the Arts. Beyond her own shows, though, Binion has in recent years broadened her reach to spotlight younger local talent in well-curated showcases like her Duets series. “When I came upon the idea to create the Duets format, circa 2018, I had become aware that there were a number of young songwriters in Orlando that had come up listening to my music,” says Binion. “This was really surprising to me so I wanted to step in and support them … and the format that Jordan Foley and I came up with called for collaboration with musicians and songwriters outside of one’s regular band members.” Foley himself says, “Terri Binion isn’t a part of the masterclass in Orlando’s music scene, she is the masterclass. Beyond her tremendous creativity and beautiful songwriting, Terri holds your heart close and tight if you find yourself in her orbit. I’m very fortunate to have been mentored by Terri over the years, and I am grateful

for every lesson she’s taught me in music and in life. She taught me how to be authentic, mean every word in the lyrics, utilize all the spaces in the song, and live a life of abundance as an artist.” In fact, Binion’s own music is but a sliver of her focus lately. Nowadays, she’s often operating behind the curtain to enrich the local scene, like working alongside Beth McKee and the Swamp Sistas recently in an eight-week mentorship for LGBTQ+ youth support organization Zebra Youth. “Terri is a precious resource, and you can hear a little bit of her in almost all of us,” says Swamp Sistas founder and longtime Binion collaborator Beth McKee. “She’s also very generous with her time and energy: mentoring and supporting local songwriters, volunteering for Orlando Rock Girls Camp, and playing a vital role in the Swamp Sistas movement … Terri with a clipboard and a Sharpie is a beautiful thing to behold, and nobody works harder to make things better. We are so lucky to have her as our musical backbone.” Binion’s recent help with Orlando Girls Rock Camp as a guru for girls and nonbinary youth is perhaps her most formative work yet. After her first volunteer stint there in 2022, Binion says, “When it was over I spent the entire next year thinking about the next summer.” From that experience, it seems Binion has found her latest cause. “I am also thrilled with and inspired by the women that lead and coordinate the OGRC,” she says. “I am committed to them and feel that I have finally come upon the way to give back to my community in the way that hits closest to my heart and nearest to my own life experience, and I feel these young musicians are going to carry on the gift of music in others as creatives and leaders and make a difference in people’s lives.” Hopefully, just like the one Binion has already made in ours.

JOHN PAONESSA AND MIKE CARPENTER J ohn Paonessa and Mike Carpenter never planned on opening Orlando’s drag haven and restaurant Hamburger Mary’s nearly 16 years ago. They also never imagined they’d be challenging the state of Florida all the way to the U.S. Supreme Court. The partners in life and business didn’t know each other when they separately moved to Orlando in 1986 — Paonessa was from New York, working in the car rental business; Carpenter from Indiana, selling insurance. They met in 1988, fell in love, and haven’t looked back since. Work took them out of Florida, but eventually they returned to the Sunshine State, opening their own insurance agency in Fort Lauderdale. As serendipity would have it, their office was right by that city’s outpost of the San Francisco-based Hamburger Mary’s chain. “We were familiar with the Mary’s brand,”remembers Paonessa. “The one in Fort Lauderdale at the time was their biggest store, and our agency was right around the corner from there.” It was, as Paonessa says cheekily, “temporary insanity” that led the two to sell their agency, move back to Orlando, and open the beloved Church Street restaurant in 2008. At the time, it was the only location the couple could find that was open to hosting a restaurant that featured drag performances. The first night of their soft opening, Paonessa says, they were steamrolled by the demands of running a restaurant.“I went home that night, and I held my dog and I cried, and I’m like, ‘We made a terrible mistake. What did we do?’” But 16 years later, Hamburger Mary’s doors remain open. And now, perhaps in the same daring state of mind that led to

en Cousins, a local mom of four, may not have been born an activist, but she’s had the heart of one since she was a kid. Growing up in a small rural town in New Jersey, Cousins spent a lot of time with her siblings at home while her mom worked three jobs to support the family. “I was just, like, obsessed with watching CNN back then,” she tells Orlando Weekly. Young Cousins became anti-war through watching the beginnings of the United States’eight-year war with Iraq unfold. And, as she got older, that fire within Cousins only grew. A self-described “weird”kid, she found acceptance in the LGBTQ+ community as a teenager and later in college. “They were my friends in school, they were the community that accepted me,” she says. “Watching friends die of AIDS, you know, I’ve experienced a lot of hurt … watching them be beat up because of who they are. It’s always been one of my main passions, to help protect this community.” And today it’s even more personal. Two of Cousins’ children are queer — one gay, one nonbinary. Her nonbinary child came out to her just a few years ago, and when her child bravely decided to share their story with the media, designated hate group Moms for Liberty pounced and organized a hateful campaign online, smearing Cousins as a “groomer.” She’s since heard that descriptor (and worse) as a prominent Florida parent in the fight both locally and at the state level to protect and strengthen LGBTQ+ rights. Locally, she’s spoken up against book bans in Orange County Public Schools, and has inspired other parents to fight back, too. (Their mission became slightly harder when Moms for Libertyendorsed candidate Alicia Farrant was elected to the school board in 2022.) The same year that Farrant was elected as she advocated to remove “inappropriate” books from schools, Cousins

the two opening Hamburger Mary’s, Paonessa and Carpenter are defending our fundamental freedoms — and winning. Less than a week after failed presidential candidate and Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis signed the state’s drag ban, in May 2023 Hamburger Mary’s filed a federal lawsuit challenging the state. The lawsuit contends the law is a violation of the business’ First Amendment rights. Not long after, the court issued an injunction on the statewide law, halting implementation. The state appealed that decision to the United States Supreme Court, which upheld the injunction. The legal battle continues, and despite the injunction, the hateful rhetoric and state-sanctioned censorship has harmed the restaurant’s business. Meanwhile, the Republican-gerrymandered legislature has forced forward a slew of bills targeting queer people’s freedoms in the arenas of employment, education and healthcare. But Paonessa and Carpenter remain determined. “The lawsuit has affected revenues at Hamburger Mary’s,” affirms Carpenter, but “we are thrilled to be able to have taken the stand against the state and files the lawsuit. It was the right thing to do, and given the opportunity we’d do it again and again.” Paonessa and Carpenter are not only people we love but after more than three decades together, the two remain very much in love with each other. “I wouldn’t want to go through life with

anyone else,” says Carpenter. “[Mike’s] been the rock for me, and me for him, through this whole thing. What doesn’t kill us makes us stronger, and that’s what it’s done for us. And we’re just thankful we have the love from the community.” Carpenter adds one last, crucial point: “We have no doubt we’re going to win. Love wins every time.”

co-founded the Florida Freedom to Read Project. Florida Freedom to Read tracks the books being removed from Florida schools and advocates in favor of protecting children’s free access to books at school, defending everything from John Milton’s classic Paradise Lost to dystopian-yet-realistic novel The Handmaid’s Tale. Many of the books removed have race-related or LGBTQ themes.“Books like this are lifelines to kids who are struggling, to kids who don’t have support at home,” says Cousins. She sees books not just as affirming resources for kids, but also as literal suicide prevention tools, pointing to the grim suicide statistics for queer youth. Cousins has organized with other parents locally, and has traveled up to Tallahassee with groups like Equality Florida to lobby against recent legislative attacks on LGBTQ+ rights, including a ban on gender-affirming care for trans youth (which has also restricted access for adults) and a bill that would prevent trans people from getting ID cards that match their gender identity — even if that person has already transitioned. She and some others are also organizing a Central Florida chapter of GLSEN, the Gay, Lesbian & Straight Education Network. (A soft launch for that is planned at Orlando Congressman Maxwell Frost’s MadSoul Fest in March.) What gives Cousins hope, even when things seem dark, is the younger generations rising up to meet the occasion. f beloved sitcom Parks and Recreation had been set in Casselberry, Florida, rather than Pawnee, Indiana, parks department director Leslie Knope would have been spending her time on the arts, instead of catching possums and filling hummingbird feeders. To draw that dream out further, Knope’s subordinate Tom Haverford, instead of being a swag-addled goldbricker, might be a little like Justin Luper, Casselberry’s hard-working arts and marketing supervisor. Pawnee and Haverford are fictional, but Casselberry and Luper are not — luckily for Orlando. (Although we’d watch that show.) Before overseeing the surprising awakening of the arts in that small Orlando-adjacent city, Justin Luper wasn’t sure what he wanted to do — draw, write, design skateboard graphics — and like a lot of people, cycled through several different college majors, ranging from business to creative writing. After graduating from the University of Central Florida in 2008, Luper spent time playing in local bands, creating visual art, and working as an art installer at the Orlando Museum of Art, the Mennello Museum of American Art, and Rollins College’s Cornell Fine Arts Museum. He created a downtown mural with fellow artist Adam Lavigne for 2017’s Art in Odd Places, wrote and illustrated zines, started a vintage clothing company with his fiancée, worked with her on producing pop-up markets. In 2020, he recommitted to his visual practice. “I was going full force ‘I’m gonna be an artist.’ I got my website up and running, I booked my biggest show so far, a solo exhibition at Mills Gallery, I got to a stopping point with the body of work, the paintings that I was doing for the solo exhibition and yeah, so … COVID happened,” Luper recalls. “COVID hit, everything shut down, and

evelopers are revving the bulldozers, and we complain about it like the weather while we sprawl on our sofas waiting for DoorDash. Whether it’s yesterday’s genteel gentrification or today’s naked capitalism of displacement, we act helpless, having outsourced our outrage. Not so N.Y. Nathiri, who has outwitted the bulldozers not once, not twice, but three times. And she’s good for another, which is coming at Eatonville hard and fast. If you’ve heard of Eatonville, the South’s first incorporated all-Black city and the hometown of foundational Black writer Zora Neale Hurston, it’s probably due to Nathiri’s 35 years running the Association to Preserve Eatonville Community. While Hurston is probably the best known — thanks in no small part to the Zora Neale Hurston Festival that PEC produces each year — she’s far from the only Eatonville cause célèbre. The ongoing scandal of the Hungerford School land trust and the developers circling that property like sharks underpins Nathiri’s preservation efforts. The Association to Preserve Eatonville Community has attracted (and continues to pursue) various sustainability grants to shift the town’s tourism into high gear. Visiting tourists look for the place where town founder Joe Clark’s store used to be, and they walk the Zora trail, searching out the footsteps of one of the most vivid storytellers of the last century, who brought Eatonville alive through her books. But even with this year’s Zora Festival mostly in her rearview mirror, Nathiri’s not resting. “People are now talking about

I was kind of just like, ‘Well, what do I do now?’” The loss of that solo show, and the sense of “what now, and why not something new?” that infected most of us in the pandemic, eventually led Luper to apply for a job with the City of Casselberry. The position, in, yes, the Parks Department, would oversee Casselberry’s existing Arts House programming, reconceptualize its then-new Sculpture House, and be the guiding light leading the Arts Center when construction was finally finished. Unlike the average curator’s job, however (if there is such a thing), this role in a lean and mean city government required someone willing to wear many hats — not simply booking art shows but maintaining existing relationships with local arts groups, doing community outreach, writing and designing marketing collateral, working with budgets and more. In other words, a job that required a lot of disparate skills — a perfect fit for someone with experience in a lot of disparate fields. Almost three years after Luper took on the arts position in Casselberry, it’s clear that this was an auspicious hire. Casselberry’s profile in the visual arts punches way above its weight as a bedroom community of 30,000, with a multi-facility arts complex to rival any in Central Florida. Luper has maintained the charming Arts House, which traditionally hosts shows from various local artists groups; implemented an updated vision at the Sculpture House, modernizing the mission by enlarging “sculpture” to include any three-dimensional art, including installation, audiovisual and temporal works; and inaugurated the shiny new Arts Center with an exhibition of national artists more rigorous than anyone would have expected. His hands-on knowledge of installing and displaying art has proven a boon for both the city and the artists

trusting their work to the facilities; and his experience “on the other side,” so to speak, has proven beneficial to communicating with those artists. Not to mention, his own artistic practice and the varied acquaintances he’s made spending 17 years in the different pockets of Orlando’s art scene(s) are catnip to younger, edgier artists who might not be drawn to exhibit in a small city gallery. Luper fits all the pieces together gracefully, and we look forward to seeing his local career grow. We can think of at least one museum in this town that could take lessons on how to make a splash without sinking the boat.

an Eatonville Renaissance,” she says, referring to the Harlem Renaissance when Hurston hung out with Langston Hughes at the Apollo. Building this renaissance could be the wellspring to revitalizing the town. “We’re once again calling on our leaders to see the real potential of Eatonville, the potential for cultural heritage tourism,” Nathiri says. We love Nathiri because while she’s focused on the big picture, but she doesn’t short the details, whether that’s linking Hurston to the current vogue for Afrofuturism or creating a family day in the park with R&B greats every year. Nathiri has brought writers like Alice Walker (The Color Purple) and Toni Morrison (Beloved) to the Zora Festival. She has brought artists like Bayete Ross Smith and Faith Ringgold to the Zora Neale Hurston National Museum of Fine Arts. Besides running the Association to Preserve Eatonville Community and the Zora Neale Hurston National Museum of Fine Arts, she maintains a podcast, she wrote Zora: A Woman and her Community, and she’s a mother and a wife. How does she do it? Nathiri is rigorously disciplined, having achieved first chair violin in her youth. “I was classically trained, and wanted to be a concert violinist,” she confides. “But at Ithaca College I went on to study the classics, and I enjoyed a side career as a debater.” You would think perhaps she doesn’t have time for community engagement. But her early life — her own mother knew Zora, which gives her an unusual connection to the town — gave her the foundation to do what she does. “We have to do this,” Nathiri says in a voice that disallows argument. “What has preserved this town are the stories, and these will carry us forward.” It isn’t just Zora’s stories; it’s Nathiri’s stories too that are fascinating, and Clark’s and Hungerford’s and many others yet to be written. or years, we observed the maxim that if you saw Harryson Thevenin when you went out, then you picked the right event to attend. Rap shows, skateboarding events, noise nights, art and fashion parties — Thevenin might be found at one (or more) on any night. That same wide-ranging sense of curiosity and adventure has informed his SR50 brand since its inception in 2017, when it started as a music blog documenting shows, became a means to connect seemingly disparate subcultures. The name came to him quickly. “State Road 50 goes from one end of the state all the way to the other end. And I figured that, starting a brand I could go across different genres that can be tied together in the same way that road crosses different parts of the state.” Thevenin’s use of the word “brand” is instructive, because since its bloggy beginnings, SR50 has become, well, anything Thevenin and his collaborators want it to be: website, longrunning zine, concert promoter, clothing line (including sportswear, sandals and tactical wear), film company. “I didn’t see anyone [locally] doing the things we wanted to do. So I just thought, ‘We might as well do whatever we want,’” says Thevenin, understatedly. Crucial early inspirations for his work with SR50 include exposure to Orlando music touchstones like Wet Nurse and Total Bummer Fest, as well as designers Virgil Abloh and Balenciaga. In the last year or so alone, SR50 has released a line of tennis attire (“I wanted to start a fitness revolution,” jokes Thevenin [maybe]), organized a rave, and hosted a Sept. 11 hardcore show at Uncle Lou’s. This isn’t about money or clout, this is

JOHNNY AND JIMMY TUNG

ames Beard-nominated restaurateurs Johnny and Jimmy Tung oversee a sprawling empire of 35 restaurants, but do so in the most low-key way possible. In fact, we recently saw Johnny, the younger of the brotherly duo, serving bowls of udon and then busing tables at their new Mills 50 noodle joint, Zaru. The Tungs are as gracious as they are down to earth, and restaurant life helped shape their unassuming approach in running and developing their business. “My brother and I grew up in restaurants,” says Johnny. “I still remember sitting in the kitchen watching my daddy cook. I was just 4 years old, Jimmy was 8, but we eventually ended up doing everything from prepping and cooking to serving and tending to the buffet.” That sort of grounding experience disposed the duo to shirk the spotlight and instead divert attention to the talented chefs they’ve come to nurture, support and invest in over the years — chefs like Domu’s Sonny Nguyen, Kadence’s Mark and Jen Berdin, Kaya’s Lordfer Lalicon, The Foreigner’s Bruno Fonseca, Camille’s Tung Phan, Norigami’s David Tsan, Doshi’s Gene Kim and so many others. “That’s the way we were brought up,” says Johnny.“Our parents immigrated from Taiwan. My dad told me that because we were minorities here, we had to learn to protect ourselves, work hard behind the scenes and fly under the radar to become successful. We were never brought up with that sort of ‘me’ mentality.” Indeed, in an industry dominated by attention-seekers, the Tungs are anything but. Their strategy is to partner with chefs

pushing the multimedia freedom inherent in DIY. That includes a willingness to walk away from ideas, particularly an ambitious plan to stage an SR50-sponsored 5K road race around the time of the recent Olympic trials. More successful was a recent collaborative skateboarding event and market at The Warehouse on Orange Blossom Trail. “It was cool to see the hip-hop community and the skate community come together on something mutual and everyone shakes hands about it at the end of the day.” The next SR50 actions are as eclectic as ever. They’re planning a hardcore show at The S.P.O.T. that’s also going to be the setting for a film: “It’s all improvised dialogue. I introduce characters in previous scenes. And then the show brings them all together to this one location.” And after that: a Formula One racing jacket, complete with satirical promo campaign featuring an electric go-kart. “Formula One’s hot right now, it’s really expensive,” says Thevenin. “It’s just funny to dip your toes in an industry that you have no business in.” Keeping up this level of prolific activity and motivation is no mean feat for a DIY enterprise, and the keys with SR50 are rooted in enthusiasm and collaboration. “It’s around the clock, honestly. I’m always working on something or learning about something and I’m like, ‘All right, we can expand on it.’ And I have a lot of people who help out. My friend Alex does all the graphics and flyers and logos. That’s a big help,” says Thevenin. “I’m just always hyped.” and help realize their dreams — “assist them in the areas they felt they were weak at,” as Johnny puts it. For some, that meant finding an appropriate location, negotiating a lease or proving financial credibility; for others it meant marketing their concept, instituting payroll systems or navigating through the legal aspects of the business.“I remember when we helped Sonny negotiate the lease for Domu at East End Market. I still have the photo of us shaking hands with [East End Market owner] John Rife.” And by being advocates and backers of Orlando’s gifted culinarians, the brothers have reshaped the city’s restaurant landscape in a way they couldn’t have possibly predicted when they opened Bento Asian Kitchen + Sushi (then Bento Cafe) in Gainesville back in 2002. Six years later, the first Bento outside Gainesville opened in the Chase Plaza downtown. Now there are 21 locations across the state. But there came a point when the two had to decide what bearing, and complexion, their burgeoning restaurant empire would take — further ensconce Orlando as a chain-heavy metropolis, or steer it in a completely different direction? “Once we had kids, we asked ourselves, what do we want to be remembered for? Do we want to open more Bentos, which of course is great, or do we want to make an impact on the community? We knew we wanted Orlando to be the city where we put our roots in and raise a family in, so a focus on chef-driven and legacy-driven restaurants was an easy decision.” In the past decade, no one has done more to establish a new culinary rep for this city than the Tung brothers. Their reach is far and the long list of independent restaurants that have opened under their guiding hands is impressive — Kadence, Kaya, Camille, Zaru, Doshi, The Foreigner, Domu, Tori Tori, Norigami, Light on the Sugar, Danilo’s Pasta Bar,

not to mention the high-concept Sorekara by chef William Shen slated to open next month in Baldwin Park and Mills Market, a new food-and-retail hub that will supplant Tien Hung Market in the heart of Mills 50. “Orlando is such a great city, and it’s so underrated,”says Johnny. “James and Julie Petrakis, Jason and Sue Chin, Norman Van Aken — they all paved the way for us to continue forging Orlando’s new food identity, and Jimmy and I just want to make the sort of impact that Orlando will be proud of.” Mission accomplished.

eather Wilkie, executive director of Zebra Youth, didn’t grow up in Florida, but she’s called it home now for 20 years. Originally from Bible Belt West Virginia, Wilkie was raised Southern Baptist in a household that didn’t really question the status quo (that is, heterosexuality and a gender binary as the norm). But in her adolescence and young adulthood, she and her friends (“kind of a rowdy group in many ways,” she admits with a laugh) challenged some of the deeply ingrained beliefs they’d grown up with about who a person can love, what that can look like, and their own broader identities. Today, she lives in Orlando with her 9-year-old son and her partner — who’s nonbinary and a teacher in the public school system. Wilkie’s work serving LGBTQ+ youth is deeply personal, both as a parent and as a partner. Wilkie grew up loving musical theater (some of her favorites are Rent, Hamilton and the more recent Hadestown) and originally went to college in Asheville, North Carolina, to study the arts. But as she came out to herself and others in college as a lesbian, she went through her own internal journey of self-acceptance and exploration (with the help of therapy), and realized she wanted to be able to help others navigate what can be an emotionally trying process. “I’ve also always had sort of a philanthropic brain, you know, and that was sort of embedded in me actually through religion, growing up.” She first began working with marginalized children through youth shelters in Asheville, before finding work in Central Florida.

“W

ill’s, Lou’s, Grumpy’s, it’s just one fucking road,” marvels Syd Zed.“And I’m here every night. But I’m never bored.” If you happen to be at certain Mills 50 venues on certain nights — OK, hell, any night — you’re no doubt at least visually familiar with the outré Orlando rock institution that is Syd Zed: long golden hair and perpetual all-black attire, rocker vibes to spare, thick Brummie accent; the quintessential English musical eccentric. At shows, Syd Zed has an ever-present PBR in one hand and a smartphone in the other. No big deal, right? It’s what comes next that’s so fascinating — at just the “right” moment, Zed will take a video of the band playing. But these are performance clips à la Jean-Luc Godard, if Godard made 3-D movies in the 1950s. Zed lunges the camera in and out haphazardly, watching the musicians instead of his phone screen, conducting the action with his free hand. The next day, he edits them down and posts to Instagram. Zed has been doing this every night for years. Entire generations of Orlando bands and musicians, whole scenes, have had their musical lives captured on his Instagram and Facebook accounts. (Once there was a crowdfunding campaign to get him a new phone and it met the goal immediately.) Zed is immersed in the eternal musical Now, across genre. “I’m here every night. I see all the bands,” says Zed with a shake of his head. “I can’t believe it meself.” “Syd’s presence at a show serves as a rare waypoint of authenticity and continuity throughout all the changing styles,” offers friend and arts curator Moriah Russo. “He’s proof that a life can

She only meant to stay in Florida for a year, but career-wise, it worked out for her to stay longer. After working for Harbor House, a domestic violence shelter, for over a decade, Wilkie joined Zebra Youth as executive director in 2015. The organization was rather small and not very well-known at that time, she says. It didn’t really reach the spotlight until the Pulse Nightclub shooting in 2016 that killed 49 people, most of whom were LGBTQ+ and people of color. The tragedy occurred less than a year after Wilkie joined Zebra Youth. At that point, they had a greater responsibility to step up and to be there for the community, particularly the impacted families, in their time of need. “I had no idea what I was getting into,” she admits. Zebra Youth has sheltered hundreds of homeless LGBTQ+ youth over the years through their bridge housing and rapid rehousing programs, and offers free mental health counseling for LGBTQ+ youth. While Zebra Youth’s primary service population at the time of its formation was young gay boys, today they largely serve transgender and nonbinary teens, who have (through no fault of their own) become collateral damage in Republicans’ culture wars. She used to go into schools and help guide staff on how to foster an inclusive and welcoming environment for LGBTQ+ students, especially those who don’t get that kind of acceptance at home. But now, following the passage of Florida’s “Don’t Say Gay” law, which prohibits teachers from discussing or teaching anything on gender or sexuality in K-12 schools, that’s no longer possible. “We haven’t been able to reach as many young people and … it’s hard to swallow,” says Wilkie. Social media is another place where young people find mental health resources, but state lawmakers are now considering limiting children’s access to that, too.

What gives Wilkie hope is the level of support in the Orlandoarea community, and the strength of those who fight back against laws restricting LGBTQ rights.“I tell youth all the time, you know, you may hear this negativity in the news, but you have an army behind you,” she says. When Pride-themed murals outside Zebra Youth’s drop-in center on Mills Avenue were defaced by neo-Nazis last year, it took just one call for help on social media to bring a crowd of community members, including city commissioner Patty Sheehan, together to paint over the hateful graffiti the very next day. Wilkie came from a family of strong women herself, and that comes in handy when she has her “activist” hat on. “It’s just not in me to sit quietly,” she says.

Standing beside him on a random weeknight is like being in a royal receiving line: a steady stream of hugs, handshakes and nods. “Young folks recognize him as something special,” says Will Walker, owner of Will’s Pub. “An OG, if you will.” Before there was Syd Zed there was David Sydney, born in Nuneaton (near Birmingham) on Christmas Day. In 1965, The Beatles, The Who and The Kinks started a 13-year-old Zed down the path he now treads on Mills Avenue. Soon enough he formed his own band(s), culminating in a move to the United States and a marriage to longtime partner and musical collaborator Magdalena. They played music together all around the country, living in Portland for a time before settling in Orlando. Their entree to the local music scene was the Peacock Room and Austin’s Coffee, where they’d both play and attend shows. “The thing about Syd is that he’s always there,” says fellow Orlando musician and U.K. expat Nadeem Khan (who should know, because he is also always there). “Many don’t know that he has recorded vast amounts of strange yet accessible music.” Indeed, Zed’s songs are wonderfully weird and catchy in the way that Felt and Television Personalities were. “His shows were quite terrific back in the day. His dear lady Lena was a fun and quirky character as well. His CD Digital False Teeth should have had a wider release,” says friend and musical confederate Johnny Wells. The album did reach No. 1 on the WPRK local chart, and single “Made in Taiwan” is still a Top 25 song for at least one Orlando Weekly editor. These days Zed is happier in the audience than on the stage. And time is still on his side. “I can believe that I’m still alive,” mutters Zed.“But I stopped smoking a year ago. Ryan Harmon and and Joe Lanzisero collectively boast nearly 80 years of experience in the themed entertainment industry. And they have thoughts about the future of Orlando’s biggest economic engine

Ryan Harmon, the president and

chief creative officer of Zeitgeist Design & Production, was once the youngest Imagineer working on the development of Disney/MGM Studios, before founding his own attraction design company 13 years ago. Joe Lanzisero, Zeitgeist’s executive vice president and chief art director, spent 35 years Imagineering Disney classics from Mickey’s Toontown to Mystic Manor. Between the two of them, they’ve got about 80 years of experience in the themed entertainment industry, and have interviewed dozens of top creatives through their “Spirit of the Times” Zoomcasts. So when they have something to say about the future of Orlando’s biggest economic engine, you should listen. Here are just a few highlights from my recent conversation with Harmon and Lanzisero about what’s new and what’s next in theme parks.

What new attraction have you experienced recently that excited you?

Joe Lanzisero: I think it has to be the Super Mario World at Universal Hollywood. I think it succeeds because it’s an immersive world. I think with a lot of these things, the whole is greater than the sum of the parts. … That’s what for me is kind of the trend looking forward, and I think that’s part of what Epic Universe is going to be

about: creating these really immersive places, so you get lost in the storytelling in a deeper way. And it’s not just a single ride, it’s not just the restaurant. It’s the whole experience that works together to deliver the story, and hopefully puts you in a deeper emotional connection with the story as well. Ryan Harmon: The TeamLab experience called “Planets” in Tokyo is like nothing you’ve experienced before. You take your shoes off and put them in a locker. It starts off with you walking up a hill in a waterfall, and your ankles are in water, and you’re immersed in these amazing experiences of lights and mirrors and water and projection and live flowers. It was mind-blowing for me to do, and I don’t know if it’s something that would translate to Western culture, mostly because of the walking around barefoot.

What is your take on the growing trend of immersive hotel experiences?

RH: I really hope that developers are not dismayed by what happened to the Galactic Starcruiser [which closed at Walt Disney World]. Because the notion of spending the night and role-playing in an immersive experience, I think, is going to be big eventually. Someone just needs to figure out how to do it so it makes financial sense. We were approached a few years ago by Marriott, about a resort they have in Jamaica and were looking to make it more experiential. And we told them to turn it into a pirate resort. You are actually in the Caribbean on the water: build a ship, have rum bars, turn it into a village! And they came back and basically said,“We think people come for the spa.”

How much do you think Epic Universe will impact tourism trends in Central Florida?

JL: I think it’s going to be tricky. With so many choices in Orlando, there’s a lot of noise in the marketplace. I think it’s going to be an amazing park; the scale of it, the kinds of things that they’re trying to do. They’re creating these very immersive story worlds that you’re going to get lost in — which is, I think, great — and they’re doing them at a massive scale. Nothing is timid about it; it’s all big strokes, and that was by design. I think their biggest challenge is going to be how they market it and how they communicate that it is something different from all the other choices that you have when you go to Orlando. RH: I’ve been in this business 36 years — worked for Universal, Warner Brothers, Disney and pretty much everybody — and I have never seen something of this magnitude and scale. It’s truly mind-blowing. … A lot of us designers lament Universal’s attractions in recent decades that were basically all a movie screen or a TV screen with us in front of it, which I hate. They’ve actually made an effort to make this a more old-fashioned, physical, tactile theme park, and I’m super excited to go see what they do. Because as much as we love everything Disney stands for and does, I’m really afraid that Universal is starting to edge them out in terms of innovation and creating new paradigms, and I hope that inspires Disney to come back at it with a vengeance. Eet by Maneet Chauhan won’t offend finicky tourists with its Disney-approved ‘modern’ Indian fare BY FA IYAZ KARA

ho’s to say why it took so long for Indian food to make an entry into Disney Springs but, nevertheless, there’s one in place now. It’s called Eet and it’s by celebrated culinary personality Maneet Chauhan. If the name rings familiar, then you’re likely an avid watcher of the Food Network: The Indian-American chef is a regular on Chopped and maintains a pretty busy shooting schedule, we were told, so don’t expect to see her inside Eet’s quick-service kitchen anytime soon whipping up naan or pani puri. She does, however, have a welcome message posted outside the entrance inviting guests to embrace the Indian restaurant’s “adventurous, bold flavors.” It might seem innocuous, but referring to Indian cuisine — or any cuisine cooked by people with brown skin — as “adventurous” and “bold” only emphasizes a misguided notion of the cuisine being part of “the other.” It plays up exoticism and reinforces ethnic boundaries and divisions between the majority and minority. And besides, who exactly would find this food “adventurous”

and “bold”? Certainly not the billions from the Indian subcontinent, Southeast Asia, Caribbean or elsewhere who cook and eat this food every day. It’s the kind of language that panders to lowest common denominator “Midwestern palates” and serves to make Indiana Man feel like Indiana Jones for eating a samosa. [End rant.] Besides, Eet’s version of those pastry pockets ($9 for two) are hardly daredevil material. The spiced potato filling was practically mashed, and the pastry itself was — sadly for samosa lovers — baked, not fried, yielding only a semblance of crackle. There are, of course, other baked wonders fired up at Eet, i.e. naan. We opted for the bread service ($18) which included a mound of whipped pimiento-paneer cheese as well as carrots, celery and radishes dusted with chaat masala. The platter came with five dips and two different breads — buttered and garlic naan. We passed on the garlic and upgraded to the spicy green chili naan for $1 extra. The naans weren’t as poofy as I thought they’d be, but that’s because they’re not cooked in a tandoor.

The dough is flattened using a press, then placed onto a rotating oven that blisters the bread at 550 degrees for 30 seconds. For the sort of volume this quick-service operation takes on, it’s an efficient method. What impressed us most, however, were the five different dips — a sweet/sour lime pickle, garlic pickle, and coriander honey, along with a proper tangy tamarind chutney and a bright mint chutney. We loved them all, and especially enjoyed dipping the peppery chili naan into the honey. Pani puri ($12), the staple street food snack, looked the part here: seven semolina puffs cracked open at the top and ready for scoops of chickpea-potato filling, drizzles of tamarind-date chutney, sev (fried chickpea noodles) and, of course, the pani, or mint-cilantro water. Only the pani wasn’t the pungent liquid we expected it to be. “It’s not offensive,” I said to my brother-in-law, referring to the lack of kala namak, aka black salt, with its sulphury essence. “It needs to be a bit offensive for it be proper pani puri,” he said. “Less Indiana, more Indian,” I agreed. “Maybe it’s ma nose, maybe it’s Ma-neet.” More eets not in danger of offending anyone included a tandoori chicken poutine ($14) with crisp, fluffy, chaat masala-dusted fries weighted with globs of curds and tomato-butter “gravy.” Not bad, but you’re not going to get a couple of Desi hosers to swoon over this. A build-a-bowl concoction of cumin-basmati rice topped with basil-cilantro shrimp in a cashew-saffron korma sauce ($18) was solid; it even came with pickled red cabbage, kachumber and wee puffs of chickpea pearls. Those pearls are used to add color and pop to a host of dishes, from the samosas and pani puri (they’re used as a bed) to the gulab jamun cheesecake ($9), where they dot the top. We thought the gulab jamun would be baked into the cheesecake, but the syrupy balls were sliced and used as a garnish instead. Strawberries and the flavor of strawberries dominated the dessert. It would’ve been nice to have a cup of chai with the cake, but shockingly, chai isn’t offered here. Rather, a candied “Valenchai Day Latte” was suggested. Eh, no thanks. Hey, I get it. When you’re at Disney, you have to please the masses, and even in 2024,“masses” equates to a pretty specific target audience. I’m sure if Chauhan had her druthers, she’d serve 150 percent balls-out Indian fare. But playing with the mouse means playing by the mouse’s rules, so compromise, I’m sure, was a choice Chauhan felt she had to make. But we don’t. fkara@orlandoweekly.com

Peppercorn junkies will revel in every bite of “rattan pepper sliced fatty beef” and shuizhu fish with hot chili oil. (Netflix) The Heartbreak Agency — This German flick shows a jilted Johann seeking revenge on the relationship counselor who convinced his girlfriend to break up with him. Throw in a nice revenge-porn subplot, and I’m going to belatedly proclaim these people the soul of romance. (Netflix) Love Is Blind — Season 6 shifts locales to Charlotte, North Carolina, for more good-faith courtship among couples who don’t know what each other look like. Since Season 7 has already gotten the green light, I’m assuming nobody’s disappointment was great enough to spark a Megan Wants a Millionaire–style homicide. (Remember that one? When the hell is it going to show up on YouTube?) (Netflix) The New Look — Ben Mendelsohn is Christian Dior and Juliette Binoche is Coco Chanel in a historically based drama series that shows how future fashion icons survived World War II. Love Storiyaan — Profiles of six real-life Indian couples create “a celebration of love in its most authentic and diverse forms.” OK, who got to mic up the goat? (Prime Video) Ready, Set, Love — This Thai romcom takes place in an alternate reality where men are the minority and dating shows treat them like unicorns to be pursued and cherished. Good news, fellas: TV is going to look at us exactly the same no matter how many of us there are. (Netflix) The Truth About Jim — A worried family investigates the possibility that the man they knew as a husband, stepfather and step-grandfather was actually a serial killer. Since this is a docuseries and not a scripted drama, I’m going to guess the answer is “He wasn’t, but we’re going to wait four episodes to tell you.” (Max) The Vince Staples Show — It worked for John Malkovich, Jean-Claude Van Damme and Nicolas Cage, so now West Coast rapper/ actor Vince Staples is playing himself in a comedy series that exaggerates and distorts the details of his real life and career. Fun detail: You can tunnel directly into Staples’ brain from the offices of Blacksmith Records, but after 15 minutes, you’re ejected onto the Pacific Coast Highway. (Netflix) Vigil — Season 2 sends detectives Amy Jones and Kirsten Longacre to a Scottish Air Force base to solve a series of mysterious deaths. Hence the saying “A guy could get kilt around here.” (Peacock)

Comedy Chaos — Indonesia is the location for a sitcom about an overwhelmed guy who’s struggling to save both his comedy club and his marriage. I know plenty of people who do stand-up, and all they have to save is their gig hosting an open mic at a Winter Garden KKK hangout and their roommate’s RedTube password. (Netflix) The Dynasty: New England Patriots — Twenty years of highs and lows are retraced in a team history that plays out over the course

of 10 documentary episodes. That might seem like a lot, until you realize Robert Kraft spends more time on a typical visit to Massage Envy. (Apple TV+) Einstein and the Bomb — A combination of archival footage and dramatic re-enactments portrays the moral quandary Albert Einstein experienced after urging the U.S. to develop atomic weapons. In the heartwarming conclusion, a representative of Price-Waterhouse shows up and reassures him it’ll all be worth it when we have Oppenheimer. (Netflix) The Grand Tour: Sand Job — A special episode has the boys trying to recreate the ParisDakar rally in “cheap modified sports cars.” Yeah, but did you ever try merging into a Lynx lane in a Smart Car? (Prime Video) Life & Beth — Season 2 finds Amy Schumer’s Beth wondering if her distrust of men is going to keep crippling her relationship options as she approaches her 40s. Don’t worry, Beth: Before you know it, you’ll be in your 50s. And then you won’t trust anybody! (Hulu) Snoopy Presents: Welcome Home, Franklin — Here’s an origin story that shows how little Franklin Armstrong met and eventually won over the Peanuts gang by participating in a soap-box derby. (AMC+ and Acorn TV) Rhythm + Flow Italy — The latest international edition of the hip-hop competition show welcomes contestants from the Italian rap capitals of Rome, Naples and Milan. I’m kind of surprised they didn’t set it in Florence, because Rhythm + Flo was RIGHT THERE. (Netflix)

Broadway Calls return to Orlando for more thrills and spills | Courtesy photo

IF YOU CAN MAKE IT HERE … Oregon’s Broadway Calls are ‘Coming After You,’ Orlando BY IDA V. ES KAMAN I

t’s the final day before Ty Vaughn, frontman of Oregon punks Broadway Calls, kicks off the beautiful chaos of the band’s upcoming tour. It’s a gloomy day in St. Helens, Oregon, and at this moment, Vaughn’s main concern is his dog Desi interrupting our conversation. “He’s 5, and he’s an Australian shepherd. So he’s just all about herding people. If I’m not in the same room as others, then it becomes a problem.” In standard DIY style, drummer Josh Baird spent all weekend printing merch, and in a ritual the band has followed since high school, they will gather at Baird’s home before heading on tour. Broadway Calls became a band in 2005; Vaughn and Baird, along with bandmate Adam Willis, have been making music together for a long time. Vaughn and Baird have been at it since high school. “We’re both 41 now and we’ve been playing together since we were like 15,” he says, “and we’re only getting better at communicating the older we get.”

Almost two decades in, we can call Broadway Calls veteran musicians. They’ve toured the country several times over, as well as gigged abroad. In 2013 they took a much-needed hiatus as a result of that relentless lifestyle. “We needed to stop touring as much as we had been, and kind of just get our lives in order,” admits Vaughn. And that they did, setting the stage, so to speak, for their eventual resurgence. The band found a new label home in Chicago’s Red Scare Industries, and after seven years, they released their fourth record and accidental pandemic soundtrack Sad in the City. The record was embraced by old and new fans alike. The band have rolled out several singles since then, all compiled into the just-released EP Coming After You! When you think of rural America, punk rock may not be the first thing that comes to mind. But it’s often these unlikely places where you’ll find flourishing scenes. For Broadway Calls, small towns are the stomping grounds they know best.

It was Longview, Washington, a small city nestled in Mount Coffin and land of the Cowlitz Indian Tribe, where the young punks found a scene to cut their teeth. “Longview, that was the town that we would play shows in and go see shows,” says Vaughn. “And even though we were only about an hour from Portland, Longview had its own scene, and bands would stop there on tour. And that’s where we learned to be a band.” It’s also where bandmate Baird learned how to be a promoter, and in a full circle moment for the band, Baird says, “Josh is about to start booking shows in Longview again … which hasn’t happened probably in about 15 years or so because there was no venue. And now there’s a venue.” Vaughn is earnest in his support of creating a space for emerging acts to practice their craft.“It just inspires more people to start more bands or to get involved however they want to, which is great,” he says. The band has a fondness for Florida. They consistently play Gainesville’s annual punk

pilgrimage, Fest; but beyond that annual event, they haven’t toured the South in over a decade. With four Florida stops in four days, they’re making up for lost time, and fast. As is the case for millions, Vaughn has conquered fears and learned countless life lessons here in Orlando. “I actually rode my first ever rollercoaster in Orlando,” he says. And at a show at Will’s Pub long ago, it was tourmates in the Menzingers and Flatliners causing the thrills: “I remember being crowd-surfed against my will by the people I was on tour with … and it was very very scary. I don’t usually do that shit,” Vaughn shares with a lingering hint of trepidation. When asked for any last words as we wrapped up our conversation, Vaughn keeps it concise but essential: “Ceasefire in Palestine.” And, of course, “We’ll see you in Orlando.” music@orlandoweekly.com

(7 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 15, The Plaza Live, $28-$35) Julieta Venegas: While she’s a mainstream Latin pop star by most measures, with platinum sales and tons of big industry awards, Mexico’s Julieta Venegas has always kept it organic like an old-school artist. Rather than some basic icon, she sings, writes, produces and plays tons of instruments. While her music maintains Mexican heritage, she’s not bound by traditionalism. Over a career of nearly three decades, she’s proven herself an artist of enviable versatility and integrity. (8 p.m. Friday, Feb. 16, Dr. Phillips Center, $54.50-$99.50) Softcult, Glixen, Flowers for Emily: Calling all shoegazers in the metro, this is one you definitely don’t want to miss. It’s a lineup loaded with young bands under some great influences, and all of them worship at the almighty fuzz altar. Canada’s Softcult are a twin-sister act whose grunge-gaze synthesizes riot-grrrl ethos and some of the best 1990s rock textures into a sound that’s a fresh take on indie nostalgia. With foggy, towering rock that’s simultaneously airy and massive, Arizona’s Glixen are like a dreamspun triple helix of Lush, Hum and My Bloody Valentine. LOCAL RELEASES

Even with a relatively low profile in terms of output and live appearances, hard-rocking Orlando band Gamma Waves leave a pretty indelible impression when you see them play. With strands of noise rock and punk, their grunge-thick onslaught is impressively blunt. No fashion, flair or fuss — just raw, beefy rock. Look no further than Gamma Waves’ new single,“Money Maker.” It’s a sludgy, revving dive that comes down in a grimy spiral of deadpan mercilessness. But B-side cut “Ambedo” is a turbo-charged, punk-powered rager that might even best the lead-off single. That these songs were mastered by the legendary Jack Endino (Nirvana, Mudhoney, Soundgarden) only further certify their grunge bona fides. All told, these tracks are Gamma Waves’ brawniest work yet. “Money Maker” now streams everywhere. “Ambedo,” however, is an exclusive B-side on Bandcamp only. Both will be bundled together on a special, very limited cassette edition (50 copies) releasing Feb. 21.

Psychic Death, Leatherette, Tiger Beat, The Synthetics: This stacked lineup surrounds an excellent touring band with some of Orlando’s best new underground talent. Deliciously dark Atlanta headliner Psychic Death are a dire post-punk mix of death rock and new wave. Chicago-based but Orlando-born Leatherette are singularly famous for their junkie punk blues and exhilarating performances. Rounding out the bill will be the Velvet Underground-esque rock primitivism of Tiger Beat and post-punk revivalists the Synthetics. (7 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 21, Conduit, $15) William Elliott Whitmore, Jordan Foley: When William Elliott Whitmore first emerged with his 2003 death-folk magnum opus Hymns for the Hopeless, he cast an immediate spell over the alternative-folk cognoscenti. Since then, the haunting Iowa artist’s work has become a splendid compendium of American roots music, packing prime specimens of folk, blues and country all in a single catalog. Whitmore’s calling card is a preternatural voice that conjures prewar ghosts with a patina that’s stunning for a modern artist of his age. Grit, gravity and blues like this usually only come from a lifetime of tribulation. Opening will be country-rocker Jordan Foley, who himself owns one of Orlando’s most distinctive voices. For comedians, once you’re performing at big theaters, you’re primetime, baby. But headlining arenas is some godlike shit. And it’s an especially remarkable feat when you’re an understated nice guy working in a field overrun by loud, flamboyant personas. Nate Bargatze’s unassuming demeanor, however, belies his genius. Tucked slyly within his disarming Southern affability is pure comedy platinum. Though his subject matter is mainstream, his takes and articulation are masterful marvels of economy, incision and precision — there’s zero fat or filler in his delivery. Like a down-home joke ninja, his punchlines are blindsiding, coming from seemingly nowhere with such laser precision that you’ll be doubled over instantly. Popularity and quality aren’t always equivalent in comedy, but Bargatze’s blend of broad appeal and perfected craft has made him the rightful new king of laughs. 7 p.m., Kia Center, 400 W. Moulin Rouge! The Musical

“Hey sista, go sista, soul sista, flow sista” … Moulin Rouge! The Musical opens at the Dr. Phillips Center Tuesday as part of the Broadway in Orlando 2024 season. The 10-time Tony Award-winning musical runs in the Walt Disney Theater for two weeks (through March 3). Ever since Moulin Rouge! hit Broadway in 2019, the musical has taken audiences by storm with dazzling costumes and award-winning choreography. Based on the Baz Luhrmann movie that nabbed nominations for 129 awards after it was released in the early 2000s, the stage musical takes a new approach to the hedonistic world of Moulin Rouge but includes the same glitzy and glammy aesthetic. Featuring over 70 pop hits of the last century, Moulin Rouge! The Musical will have you tapping your toes and saying “oui oui oui” all the way home. Facility Location: Orlando Bioenergy, LLC proposes to construct a new facility to process food waste/biomass to produce RNG, which will be in Orange County on a parcel of land between Monument Parkway and Hayes Street in Orlando, Florida. Project: The facility will process biomass and food waste (feedstock) into biogas through anaerobic digestion technology to produce renewable natural gas (RNG). The finished RNG will be injected into an existing natural gas pipeline. The facility will process the feedstock in multiple stages to produce biogas. The biogas will be cleaned/converted to natural gas standards to be injected into an existing pipeline. The facility will consist of the following emission sources: two vents for waste gas from the biogas upgrading systems, two flares to destroy biogas during upset conditions, a natural gas fired hot water heater for pasteurization of feedstock, and an odor control system for the acceptance of feedstock. The hot water heater and odor control system have been claimed as exempt from the requirement to obtain an air construction permit under Rules 62-210.300(3)(a)33 and 62-210.300(3)(b)1, F.A.C., respectively. The facility is expected to be a minor source of air pollution with the largest pollutant emission being sulfur dioxide at 38 tons per year (TPY), and all other individual pollutants at less than 20 TPY. construction permit requires periodic sampling of selected gas streams within the facility’s process to verify pollutant concentrations. The facility will operate a treatment system to remove pollutants from the biogas, including hydrogen sulfide. Permitting Authority: Applications for air construction permits are subject to review in accordance with the provisions of Chapter 403, Florida Statutes (F.S.) and Chapters 62-4, 62-210, and 62-212 of the Florida Administrative Code (F.A.C.). The proposed project is not exempt from air permitting requirements and an air permit is required to perform the proposed work. Notice of Intent to Issue Air Permit: The Permitting Authority gives notice of its intent to issue an air construction permit to the applicant for the project described above. The applicant has provided reasonable assurance that operation of proposed facility will not adversely impact air quality and that the project will comply with all applicable provisions of Chapters 62-4, 62-204, 62-210, 62-212, 62-296, and 62-297, F.A.C. The Permitting Authority will issue a Final Permit in accordance with the conditions of the proposed Draft Permit unless a timely petition for an administrative hearing is filed under Sections 120.569 and 120.57, F.S. or unless public comment received in accordance with this notice results in a different decision or a significant change of terms or conditions. Comments: The Permitting Authority will accept written comments concerning the proposed Draft Permit for a period of 14 days from the date of publication of the Public Notice. Written comments must be received by the Permitting Authority by close of business (5:00 p.m.) on or before the end of this 14-day period to the above address and electronically to David Read at David. Read@FloridaDEP.gov. If written comments received result in a significant change to the Draft Permit, the Permitting Authority shall revise the Draft Permit and require, if applicable, another Public Notice. Petitions: A person whose substantial interests are affected by the proposed permitting decision may petition for an administrative hearing in accordance with Sections 120.569 and 120.57, F.S. Under Section 120.60(3),F.S., however, any person who asked the Permitting Authority for notice of agency action may file a petition within 14 days of receipt of that notice, regardless of the date of publication. A petitioner shall mail a copy of the petition to the applicant at the address indicated above, at the time of filing. A petition for administrative hearing must contain the information set forth below and must be filed (received) with the Agency Clerk in the Office of General Counsel, 3900 Commonwealth Boulevard, MS 35, Tallahassee, Florida 32399-3000, Agency_Clerk@dep.state.fl. us, before the deadline. The failure of any person to file a petition within the appropriate time period shall constitute a waiver of that person’s right to request an administrative determination (hearing) under Sections 120.569 and 120.57, F.S., or to intervene in this proceeding and participate as a party to it. If there are none, the petition must so state; (e) A concise statement of the ultimate facts alleged, including the specific facts the petitioner contends warrant reversal or modification of the agency’s proposed action; (f) A statement of the specific rules or statutes the petitioner contends require reversal or modification of the agency’s proposed action including an explanation of how the alleged facts relate to the specific rules or statutes; and, (g) A statement of the relief sought by the petitioner, stating precisely the action the petitioner wishes the agency to take with respect to the agency’s proposed action. A petition that does not dispute the material facts upon which the Permitting Authority’s action is based shall state that no such facts are in dispute and otherwise shall contain the same information as set forth above, as required by Rule 28-106.301, F.A.C. Because the administrative hearing process is designed to formulate final agency action, the filing of a petition means that the Permitting Authority’s final action may be different from the position taken by it in this Public Notice of Intent to Issue Air Permit. Persons whose substantial interests will be affected by any such final decision of the Permitting Authority on the application have the right to petition to become a party to the proceeding, in accordance with the requirements set forth above. of Time: Under Rule 62-110.106(4), F.A.C., a person whose substantial interests are affected by the Department’s action may also request an extension of time to file a petition for an administrative hearing.
