Orlando’s Amway Center changes name to Kia Center
Orlando’s Amway Center was renamed the Kia Center late last month, so, as Orlando Weekly editor in chief Jessica Bryce Young remarked, the major downtown venue will no longer be named after a protein powder pyramid scheme. The venue had been called the Amway Center for 13 years, named for Amway, a multilevel marketing company peddling vitamins, supplements and skincare owned by the DeVos family. The family also (and still) owns the Orlando Magic NBA basketball team, which now plays at the Kia Center. According to the Associated Press, the name transition had been underway for some time. Terms of the naming rights weren’t disclosed, but Amway was said to be paying about $4 million per year when they assumed naming rights for the former Orlando Events Center.
Botched Florida GOP mailer advertises wrong date for January special election
Mailers bought and paid for by a Republican committee incorrectly stated the date of an election this month for Florida House District 35 as Jan. 17 in promoting Republican candidate Erika Booth. The actual date, printed on the flip side of the mailer, is Jan. 16. Since they were promoting their endorsed candidate (Booth), we believe this was a mistake and not a sly maneuver. A reader who asked to remain anonymous sent us photos of the mailer, which described Booth as a classroom teacher “SETTING OUR STUDENTS — AND THE REST OF FLORIDA — UP FOR SUCCESS!” Booth’s campaign apparently signed off on the mailer, although she didn’t respond to our request for comment in order to confirm that. She’s running for a seat left vacant by former HD 35 Rep. Fred Hawkins, who left the job to run South Florida State College last year. That’s why the election is this month and not in November, when whomever wins this month will have to run again. Booth is facing off against Democrat Tom Keen for the HD 35 seat, which covers parts of eastern Orange and Osceola Counties.

Orange County lawmakers back proposal to restore Disney’s control of special district
the required 891,523 signatures to qualify. Now focus will shift to the Florida Supreme Court, which has to sign off on the wording. The court has scheduled a Feb. 7 hearing on the abortion initiative, which Attorney General Ashley Moody and other opponents are trying to keep off the ballot. The Supreme Court will review the proposed ballot summary and title, the wording that voters see when they go to the polls. The proposed ballot summary says, in part: “No law shall prohibit, penalize, delay, or restrict abortion before viability or when necessary to protect the patient’s health, as determined by the patient’s healthcare provider.”

Florida Republicans want to loosen the state’s child labor law, but it’s already weakly enforced
Florida Republicans have filed proposals to roll back child labor protections in Florida by getting rid of limitations on the number of hours that 16- and 17-year olds can work, and by allowing those older teens to legally work on roofs, scaffolding and in building construction. These proposals follow a trend of similar legislation pushed in other states, backed by industry groups and conservative think tanks. Supporters say it’ll give teens “freedom” and “flexibility,” and argue that anyone who violates child labor law will be punished. But this is far from certain. According to the state agency in charge of enforcing child labor law, they only have seven employees dedicated to the task. They get a couple hundred complaints a year but rarely fine employers. The federal Department of Labor also investigates allegations of child labor violations through its Wage and Hour division, but they’re stretched thin already after years of flat funding, and hundreds of investigator jobs in their enforcement division have been cut since the Obama administration. With enforcement capacity already lacking, labor advocates say Florida lawmakers should seek to strengthen child labor protections in Florida, not undermine them. Construction has the highest workplace fatality rate of any industry in Florida.
Last month, a Wells Fargo branch in Daytona Beach became one of the first branches in the country to publicly announce their desire to unionize. Workers in December filed a petition seeking a union election with the National Labor Relations Board. Banker Corrine Jefferson told Orlando Weekly they’re organizing for better staffing and for better healthcare and retirement benefits. Cuts to staffing in recent years, she said, have left workers at her branch overburdened, leading to frustrated customers, who have longer wait times because of it. A Wells Fargo branch in New Mexico became the first branch to vote to unionize last month, making Wells Fargo the first major U.S. bank with a unionized workforce at one of their branches.
Orange County lawmakers Friday backed a longshot proposal that could essentially return to the Walt Disney Co. control of a special taxing district revamped last year after Gov. Ron DeSantis got into a feud with the entertainment giant. The proposal, supported by a Democrat-heavy delegation of state lawmakers in Orange County, would repeal a law passed last year that renamed Reedy Creek the Central Florida Tourism Oversight District and gave DeSantis authority to appoint the district’s board. Previously, Disney controlled it, and had for decades. Disney, the state and the new district board have battled in state and federal lawsuits since last year’s changes. Disney alleges in a federal lawsuit that the state unconstitutionally retaliated over the company’s opposition to the 2022 education law. Sen. Geraldine Thompson, D-Windermere, said “chaos” since the establishment of the Central Florida Tourism Oversight District board “has not been good for our constituents.”

Abortion rights initiative meets signature requirements to get on Florida’s 2024 ballot
Supporters of a proposed constitutional amendment aimed at ensuring abortion rights in Florida have submitted enough valid petition signatures to get on the November ballot, a key step in what could become the state’s biggest political battle this year. The Florida Division of Elections website Friday morning showed that 910,946 valid signatures had been tallied for the proposal, surpassing orlandoweekly.com ● JAN. 10-16, 2024 ● ORLANDO WEEKLY

INDECENT PROPOSALS
The 13 dumbest bills filed for Florida’s 2024 legislative session BY MCKENNA S CH UEL ER AN D O RL AN DO WEEK LY STA FF
F
lorida’s official legislative session started yesterday. Hooray! It’s a 60-day session, lasting from Jan. 9 through March 8, 2024, in which your elected representatives gather to govern and to grandstand. 8
Hundreds of bills are filed by lawmakers each year, while only a fraction are actually passed and/or signed into law. There are some good ones out there. Some downright nefarious ones. And some that come off as performative at best, useless and unnecessary at worst. Here are 13 of those latter type.
ORLANDO WEEKLY ● JAN. 10-16, 2024 ● orlandoweekly.com
1. No money for reparations (SJR 582)
A bill filed by Spring Hill Republican Blaise Ingoglia, author of other particularly egregious bills that aim to make the lives of immigrants and activists harder, would prevent the state and local governments from paying reparations to descendants of
[ news + views ] slaves. No local government in Florida has sought to do such a thing, anyway, but Mr. “Government Gone Wild” (the name of his PAC) evidently wants to avoid following the lead of cities and counties in other states that have considered such proposals, because … hmm, what could his reasons be? Last year he filed a bill that called to “cancel” the Democratic Party, so governing doesn’t seem to be the point with this guy.
2. Banning lab grown meat (HB 435)
For all of the carnivorous snowflakes out there terrified of vegetarian food products, a bill filed by Republican Rep. Tyler Sirois would make it illegal to manufacture or sell meat cultivated from animal cells — aka “lab-grown meat.” Unclear what exactly he’s so scared of, but some of the big guys are following it (the Florida Restaurant & Lodging Association, the Florida Retail Federation) so there’s evidently some kind of interest in the idea. Violations of the proposed law (selling, manufacturing, distributing cultivated meat) would constitute a second-degree misdemeanor. Great use of everyone’s time.
3. Another, harsher crackdown on retail theft (HB 549)
advocate in criminal cases of neglect or abuse involving a dog or cat. Is this a completely useless bill? No. Would something similar for humans be a better law? Yes.
7. Cracking down on slow left-lane drivers (HB 317)
We know some of you are fired up about one; we’ve read the emails. Not to be confused with the “Move Over Law,” which went into effect this month, this bill that would restrict drivers from cruising in Florida’s highway left lanes reads as a silly attempt to crack down on people who are driving too slow for the rest of us speeding towards our inevitable demise. The bill would set non-criminal fines of up to $158 for using the left lane unless drivers are attempting to pass other motorists. However, it would provide several exceptions, such as when motorists are directed to use certain lanes, are driving around obstructions, or are following the Move Over law by changing lanes away from emergency vehicles.
8. Trying to change our state bird … again (SB 162)
Retail theft is frequently overblown for the benefit of massive retailers like Walmart, and taken much more seriously in the state of Florida than, for instance, wage theft — a widespread problem of bosses failing to pay employees wages/tips/overtime they’re lawfully owed. That problem goes woefully unaddressed by the same office (State Attorney General) that loves to advertise their efforts to combat retail theft. Maybe when the theft is performed by corporations and perpetrated on everyday working people (as opposed to the other way around), it’s not just that much of a priority.
State lawmakers will, not for the first time, consider whether to change Florida’s official state bird. Currently, our state bird is a mockingbird. Has been for decades. But, in recent years, there have been legislators on both sides of the aisle pushing to change our state bird from a mockingbird to a scrub jay. A few years ago, they considered (but didn’t approve) a proposal to designate a flamingo as our state bird. That proposal was also refiled for consideration next year. Sure, they’re not unique to Florida, but maybe spare a thought this year for our state’s mockingbirds, which apparently don’t get a lot of love in the state Legislature (albeit, still enough love to crush all efforts to remove its state bird status).
4. Sales tax break for people who buy private planes (HB 269)
9. Banning government agencies from flying LGBTQ+ flags (HB 901)
This bill, sponsored by Republican State Rep. Toby Overdorf, would establish a special tax break for people who buy private planes in Florida. This smells to us like somebody’s sucking up for some free rides.
5. Specialty license plate for The Villages (HB 733)
State lawmakers throw out a bunch of ideas in every legislative session to establish new specialty license plates. One of the silliest this session is a proposed license plate highlighting The Villages. The bill directs the Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles to develop a license plate with the text: “The Villages: May All Your Dreams Come True”(LOL). If your dreams include MAGA scuffles and rampant STDs, welcome to it.
6. Guaranteeing abused animals the right to a lawyer in court (SB 272, HB 297)
It’s not that we don’t care about abused animals. We condemn the abuse of animals, full stop. But even humans in Florida aren’t guaranteed a lawyer in domestic abuse or eviction proceedings, even if they can’t afford one. Bills filed by two Republicans and one Democrat would — in what appears to be a good-faith collab — authorize a volunteer attorney, certified emeritus attorney, or certified legal intern to be designated to act as an
Another great use of Florida legislators’ time: banning local government agencies from flying flags that display “a politically partisan, racial, sexual orientation and gender, or political ideology viewpoint.” Right, so no more LGBTQ+ flags — we know that’s the actual point. (We strongly doubt Gadsden flags would be subjected to removal if this bill actually passes.) Also as part of this bill, filed by Republican Rep. David Borrero, public schools and universities would be prohibited from displaying pride flags. Guess that just leaves more for us private citizens, until they take away that right, too.
10. Banning removal of Confederate Statues (SB 1122, HB 395)
Republican lawmakers are pushing a bill (not for the first time) that would bar local governments from taking down public statues or memorials that commemorate the Confederacy. Sponsored by Rep. Dean Black and Sen. Jonathan Martin, the bill would also punish local leaders who try to defy the law and remove them anyway. Confederate monuments have, in recent years, been taken down or moved in Tampa, Gainesville, and most recently Jacksonville. A Confederate statue at Orlando’s Lake Eola Park, commissioned by a local chapter of the United Daughters of the Confederacy, was removed in June 2017. Ironically, the House version of the bill would take effect July 1, 2024, but would be retroactive to Jan. 1, 2017. The bill sponsor
told the Orlando Sentinel that means the state would seek to restore memorials taken down after that date. The Senate bill has a retroactive date of Oct. 1, 2020. Violators of the proposed law could be fined up to $5,000. Elected officials who try to defy it could be booted from office.
11. Requiring education on how slavery was, well, “complicated” (SB 1192, HB 1139)
Another Ingoglia special, this bill proposes to require Florida’s public school system to teach students “a comprehensive account of the sociopolitical circumstances surrounding slavery, including which political parties supported slavery by adopting pro-slavery tenets to their party platform.” The “required education” under the bill, titled the “Kamala Harris Truth in Slavery Act,” is painfully obviously intended as a dunk on Democrats — referring to the fact that racist Southern Democrats did seek to protect slavery, and racist Northern Democrats let them get away with it. It also assumes that teachers don’t know how to properly educate students about the history of slavery and political parties in the United States. But who better to tell you how to teach than a politician (to boot, one without a background as an educator)? Government Gone Wild, indeed.
12. Perpetuating (and validating) bogus cop fentanyl exposure myth (HB 231)
Republicans are seeking to validate a widely debunked, Department of Justice-manufactured myth that cops are being poisoned by fentanyl by way of skin absorption. How? Through a new bill that would enhance criminal penalties for exposing first responders (firefighters, cops, EMTs, etc.) to fentanyl. This bill is on our list not because fentanyl overdose is a laughing matter (fentanyl is involved in a heartbreaking number of fatal overdoses each year), or because we don’t like cops (no comment). Rather, it’s dumb because it perpetuates the myth that law enforcement agencies have for years confabulated about how simply touching fentanyl or even having it drift onto their skin can cause overdose. The proposed law would establish mandatory minimum prison sentences for exposing first responders to fentanyl in such a way that causes “serious injury” or “great bodily harm” (both statutorily defined). The definition of exposure includes “inhalation” and “skin contact,” even though overdosing on powdered fentanyl via skin contact is not something that actually happens. Experts say the risk for overdose by way of airborne contact with powdered fentanyl is also very low. So what would this bill actually accomplish? Probably just further bloating our dilapidated, overcrowded prison system by caging more people.
13. Gator Day
A resolution proposed by Florida Sen. Keith Perry, R-Gainesville, would officially designate Feb. 14, 2024, as “Gator Day” at the state Capitol, in recognition of the University of Florida’s “accomplishments.” In the resolution summary, he names research projects, medical programs, and other technological advancements as examples. Why he chose Valentine’s Day? Unstated. We couldn’t find any other public universities for whom lawmakers have proposed declaring their own special day. (Sorry, UCF, but at least you know our local elected leaders love you.) news@orlandoweekly.com

entral Florida gains a sparkly new art space with this week’s official debut of the Casselberry Arts Center, a 3,000-square-foot gallery that will host art shows and events. The Center joins the Casselberry Art House and Casselberry Sculpture House in Lake Concord Park, which is itself host to a permanent sculpture garden, continuing the steadily accelerating arts activation of the northern Orlando ’burb. The first exhibition in the new space is also a continuation — another step in the city of Casselberry’s developing commitment to contemporary art and media. Where the average municipal
cultural department might play it safe with figurative pastels and moody black-and-white photos, Casselberry has extended itself into more challenging conceptual art, audiovisual works and installations. Experience Contemporary features work from Elisabeth Condon, Dominique Labauvie, Jason Lazarus, Sam Newton, Gabriel Ramos and Chris Robb, a healthy mix of local and out-of-town artists and a group of artists with considerable intellectual rigor. Orlando art lovers have a new destination to add to their rounds.

Epochal endings and brand-new beginnings for Orlando Fringe: executive director Alauna Friskics leaves just as the curated winter festival and artist incubator get off the ground
‘Shifted’ plays at FestN4 | courtesy photo
eratures dip into the 40s (aka “Florida freezing”), we could all stand a small taste of spring to help start off the new year, and that’s exactly what this weekend’s FestN4 at Church Street’s Fringe ArtSpace aims to provide. Formerly known as the Fringe Winter Mini-Fest, this curated four-day theater festival of favorites from previous Fringes is back with brand-new branding. But this year’s fresh beginning coincides with an epochal ending for the organization, because executive director Alauna Friskics is leaving her leadership position. With this key cultural institution at a crossroads, I interviewed Friskics on the eve of her departure, as well as ongoing festival producer Tempestt Halstead, to hear their visions of Fringe’s future. Friskics’ Fringe “origin story” starts in 1998, when she took a senior-year spring break trip to visit family in Orlando, and found herself volunteering with them at the festival. “I volunteered from sun-up to three in the morning the entire time; I saw shows, I volunteered and just dove in,” recalls Friskics. “I fell in love so fast, and so hard, which is similar to a lot of people’s stories — you see one show and you’re completely hooked.” A chance encounter with former Fringe producer Matt Wohl led Friskics to move to Florida following her college graduation, and she soon found herself working for Fringe — first as volunteer coordinator, then associate producer. Even while attending graduate school in Chicago or running the Garden Theatre, she “always stayed connected to Fringe,” she says. “It was very ingrained in who I was and what I wanted to do as a career.” Since becoming Fringe’s executive director in 2017, Friskics has overseen a stabilization of the organization’s finances, with over $500,000 distributed to artists last year, and an elevation of its international profile through her work with the Canadian Association of Fringe Festivals (CAFF). “Not only am I very proud of helping uplift the local artists, but also the touring artists, which has been a huge passion of mine.”
Friskics’ largest long-term legacy might be last year’s opening of ArtSpace, which she says she’s been seriously discussing with the board for nearly half a decade. “We knew we wanted to create an incubator program; that’s why we were approached, and that was the original core of the idea: to help emerging artists grow,” says Friskics. Despite its potential, Friskics acknowledges that ArtSpace could also prove a problem for her successor if not managed creatively. “Being downtown is very difficult. It comes with its own set of unique challenges, and I think we were giving ourselves some space and breath to be able to figure that out and try a bunch of things; the artists have a lot of different ideas about what this space is or could be. But I hope there’s still a sense of curiosity that’s going to keep it going into the future,” she says. “We have two very different lines of business right now: We have a 30-plus-year institutional festival that is very well-established and well-loved, and then we also have this brand-new baby of a theater,” Friskics explains.“At first we thought they’d just seamlessly sort of go together, and I think what we’re finding is they’re very different, [so I advise] giving grace to the startup and knowing that that’s going to take time.” “I am an adventurous person by nature, and I need new challenges and obstacles constantly,” says Friskics when asked why she’s exiting just as ArtSpace reaches its first anniversary. “I feel like there were a lot of things I’ve accomplished with Fringe that I set out to accomplish in the beginning [and] I like to leave a party when it’s poppin’, so it felt like the right time, with the right team in place. … I’m sad to leave it, but I’m very confident in its future.” One of the key members of that team carrying Fringe’s future is Tempestt Halstead, who started out while in college as a performer at the 2009 Orlando Fringe and joined the staff in 2017 — first as an administrative intern, and later as associate producer — following a career as a circus aerialist. [Disclosure: My
spouse is also part of the Fringe team.] “I was really at a pivotal point in my life,” recalls Halstead. “The moment I stepped into the office, there was something so special about this office culture. It was so inviting, it was so freeing, [and] everyone was so driven by passion.” Since succeeding Lindsay Taylor as festival producer last year, Halstead says she’s focused on “communicating with the artists [and] having that personal connection with each one of them; getting to know them, their goals, what their show is about.” To that end, she’s excited by her “open and honest conversations with the artists this last year about things that they want to see, because this festival is not just for Fringe. This festival is for the community; it is for the artists. So my job is, how can I best serve them?” For this weekend’s FestN4, Halstead is serving audiences a carefully curated selection of the Festival circuit’s best artists, including prior Critics Choice award winners and acclaimed international acts new to town. She says the new name, ditching the minimizing “mini-fest,” distinguishes it as “a curated diverse experience [that] takes the guesswork out of going to see these shows,” in contrast to the lottery-based main festival. To be frank, I’m fearful about Fringe’s future if the board of directors simply replaces Friskics with a newcomer unfamiliar with the festival’s culture; perhaps this would be the perfect time for a complete shakeup of the organizational structure. Despite the headwinds May’s festival faces — including the relocation of several venues from the Lowndes Shakespeare Center to the Orlando Family Stages — “this year is going to look different, but feel the same,” Halstead reassures me. “There are some really exciting shows that have gotten into the lottery, a lot of new emerging artists [that] have never done the festival before, [and] I am hopeful about the future. I feel like we have just started to gain our footing after COVID, and I’m just really excited.” skubersky@orlandoweekly.com

[ food + drink] Garlic grilled fish (Friendship BBQ)
Yes, it’s known for its chuan’r, but Friendship BBQ has another ace in its sleeve — a showstopper of a dish featuring whole grilled tilapia gurgling in an iron vessel with a chili-oiled liquid textured with tofu, sprouts and mushrooms. The fish itself is topped with an infernal garlic-chili paste and sprinkled with sesame seeds. This one got my pulse racing.

BEAUTIFUL BITES The prettiest plates our critic cleaned in his previous 12 months of culinary indulgence
I’ve eaten my fair share of bánh xèo, but never one like this. Chef Tung Phan reimagines the crepe-like Viet staple with chunks of Florida spiny lobster positioned on a ring of pesto fashioned from Thai basil, cilantro, culantro and roasted garlic. Shards of tuile are carefully balanced on the lobster, while a passionfruit nuoc cham with bourbon barrel-aged fish sauce is spooned into the center. It’s a crackling mouth-puckerer of a dish. Photogenic as hell, too.
Watching David Creech manhandle a massive, inverted pyramid of meat, then secure it onto a rickety “flame thrower”trompo on Cinco de Mayo, was a scene right out of the streets of Mexico. That the slow-roasted adobo pork served on an heirloom corn taco with jalapeño and arbol crema, onion, cilantro, lime and, of course, pineapple, was just as good as the tacos al pastor you’d taste in CDMX was really no surprise. Creech, after all, was born and raised in Mexico City.

I
t was an unprecedented year for restaurant openings in Orlando, not just in number, but in quality. The caliber of offerings by such new eating houses as Camille, Foreigner Restaurant and Zaru really made an impression on the food-going public, myself included (as noted in last week’s Top Tables feature). And many of those dishes happened to be the very best bites I had in 2023 — bites as gorgeous as they were gorge-worthy. Here are 12 of the most memorable.

There’s plenty to like about chef Bruno Fonseca’s monthly-changing tasting menu, but the charcoal banana tartlet topped with seared foie, Chantilly cream and port wine caramel he served early on during the multicourse meal was a bit of a surprise — a pleasant, sweet and meaty surprise.
Chef Henry Moso’s presentation of glistening Peking duck is the stuff Instagram dreams are made of. After poaching the bird in a hot liquid of Chinese red vinegar and honey, Moso ages it for three or four days. Then he roasts it, poaches it in hot oil, carves it and readies the duck for social media glory.

Hanasaki crab soup (Juju)
Juju is one of the best izakayas in the state, no doubt, but chef Lewis Lin really allows his creative side to flourish when staging his seasonal multicourse kappo dinners, and this eye-popper of a soup beguiles. It’s crustaceous to its core with sweet Hanasaki crab meat in a Hanasaki shell dashi broth along with crab roe. White truffle, chive oil and egg white add a touch of flavor elegance to the soup, which is served in the critter’s carapace.

VENTURE BROTHER
Industrial agitator JG Thirlwell premieres new classical works in Orlando BY MATTH EW MOYE R
A
fter the curtain — metaphorical or real — falls on a concert, it’s business as usual for a bit of small talk between venue manager and performer. But when the two people chatting are industrial provocateur-turned-composer JG Thirlwell and local Timucua Arts mover Benoit Glazer, things can get a little more intense. Thirlwell was, improbably, in town at the end of 2022 due to the machinations of the Modern Music Movement to perform a one-off solo set at Orlando institution Timucua Arts Foundation house. Thirlwell — a lifetime dweller on music’s adventurous fringes — played Silver Mantis, a four-channel solo performance built from prepared piano, electronics and theremin, augmented by visuals by Swedish artist Sten Backman. (We were there and the prepared piano movement was particularly stunning.) “It was a whirlwind of a trip, so the main thing I saw in Orlando was the inside of the performance space,” laughs Thirlwell. “I was really impressed by how well it was outfitted and how resourceful Benoit had been in creating that space, and the fact that he lived there as well.” We should backtrack ever so slightly here for a moment to (re)introduce Thirlwell to you, the reader. Depending on your aesthetic inclinations, you may know Thirlwell best from his seminal
and riotous industrial project Foetus and his many spin-offs — Steroid Maximus, Clint Ruin, Manorexia and even the Stinkfist mini-album with Lydia Lunch (complete with that ooh la la cover art) — which mixed his compositional ambitions with synth-punk attitude to spare. Or you may know him as the bombastic composer behind scores for cutting-edge animated shows like The Venture Bros and the recently wrapped Archer. Or, if you’re particularly out on the fringes, you’ve probably given classical pieces Thirlwell wrote for avant ensembles like Bang on a Can or Kronos Quartet a spin. Anyway, on that December evening, Glazer and Thirlwell’s chat took a fateful turn. “He said, ‘I’ve worked with this chamber orchestra, the Alterity Chamber Orchestra, we should talk about maybe doing something.’ He is extremely motivated and resourceful and he got this all together so that we could do this,”recalls Thirlwell. “I had a window where I could write some stuff and it was a great opportunity to work with a chamber orchestra and to also write a wind quintet as well, which is something I’ve never done before.” “James is a very interesting, unique artist. He is like an artistic athlete who plays many different sports. Many composers have a strong inner critic — a strong sense of right, wrong, social
acceptability, aesthetics, etc.,” points out Glazer. “We often limit the originality and quality of our output with these notions. James is more open-minded, more of a free thinker, and I think we, as a society, should try to encourage this.” Glazer commissioned Thirlwell to write “a concert of new music” for powerhouse local avant ensemble Alterity Chamber Orchestra to perform in Orlando. Thirlwell set to work on “two pieces for full chamber orchestra and one for a smaller group,” according to Glazer. For Thirlwell, his creative progression from Foetus’ swaggering noise to composing for small classical ensembles makes perfect sense — but with a fittingly dark twist. “In some ways, it’s kind of a reaction against my studio work or the way that I started making music. [Foetus] was a very studio-centric project where I played all the instruments. I used the studio as an instrument,” says Thirlwell. “When I started to write for chamber ensembles — I’m self-taught. I didn’t go to conservatory; this was a new technology and that excited me. There was the organic element that impressed me, of course. But the other thing that impressed me was, you know, when the world comes to an end and we don’t have electricity and computers, one day someone might be walking down a lonely road, and a sheaf of paper will be tossed around in the
wind and that’ll fall at their feet and be one of my scores. And someone can put a little chamber ensemble together and play that.” Glazer, fittingly, sees this wild project through from conversational concept to performance execution by conducting Alterity on the evening — their first show since 2022’s “Divergent Pulsations.” “Alterity is the brainchild of Beatriz Ramirez and Natalie Grata. It is a chamber orchestra … composed of a string quintet, a wind quintet, a brass trio, a percussion duo and a pianist,” explains Glazer. “It is a versatile instrumentation that can be quite powerful, has most of the textures of the full orchestra with piano, but is much more agile.” Glazer also gives a breathless preview of the evening that would put any rock writer [including this one!] to shame: “‘Exulansis’ is a very, very difficult piece to play. It is also a neurotic, hectic, schizophrenic, industrial, crazy piece that will bring up your blood pressure, for the players and for the audience alike.‘Hernea’, for wind quintet, is a slow piece with intensely beautiful moments, and a couple of very high sections from the flute and clarinet that, if we pull it off, will evoke a sense of beauty amongst the rough edges of life. This piece plays a very important role in the menu of the evening. Palate cleanser may be the wrong expression, but it will bridge the two big pieces nicely, and offer an oasis of calm in the eye of the storm. ‘Magnus Morbus’ is another very intense, fast, and relentless piece, a punk-classical piece that does not let go.” Thirlwell emphasizes the calm amidst the musical storm that is “Hernea”: “The woodwind quintet, I wanted to do that because … those [other] two pieces are extremely demanding on the players. They’re very high energy and energetic and intense. I wanted to have something that would make it so that the musicians didn’t injure themselves.” For the deep Foetus-heads out there, Alterity also tackles the formidable Manorexia piece “Armadillo Stance,” which Thirlwell has reconfigured as a piece for string quartet. Thirlwell will be there on the evening, but besides “maybe taking a bow,” he will leave the music that night fully up to Glazer and Alterity. Glazer, however, will be a man possessed as both conductor and producer on the show — but he’s unconcerned: “Lucky for me, Alterity is a nimble group made up of very dedicated, resourceful people who are all loving, generous humans. It makes the job easier.” music@orlandoweekly.com

CONCERT PICKS THIS WEEK
Black Wick, Wave Temples, Tegu, Justin Depth, Zoya Zafar, Anatolya: This bill is a mighty roundup of notable experimental talent from around the state. Floridian ambient artists Wave Temples, Tegu and Justin Wick craft soundtracks that tap the latent pulse of the environment and orchestrate it just enough to turn background sounds into microcosmic new-age symphonies. Of particular local note is that this four-city Florida run is the first tour for Central Florida’s own Black Wick, the rising musical guise of Joshua Rogers, who is the outsider genius behind eminent vaporwave label Illuminated Paths and video act Broken Machine Films. Other Orlando notables on this tour kickoff include the inimitable Zoya Zafar and Brian Phillips’ ominous drone act Anatolya. (8 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 11, Stardust, $10)

LOCAL RELEASES
Since the early 2010s, Leonel Urena has been moving in Orlando music circles under various names. A restless creator in the alternative electronic scene, he’s racked up production credits for notable locals under guises like DigitalDayDream (Palmer Reed, Truly Def, Kreepy K, City Tucker), electronic duo Lotus Cloud (Mag.Lo, EyeQ, O_ Super) and, most recently, solo project Healboi Bedside (Orlando’s The OG Ninja, the Bronx’s Mickey Factz). Of all these acts, though, vocalist-producer project Healboi Bedside is the most complete portrait of Urena as an artist. Though his solo run as Healboi has been a prolific one resulting in at least a handful of full-length drops since its 2019 debut, new album Serene Exile is his most crystallized look yet. Prior releases reveal a mind full of ideas packing a remarkable range of emotion, style and skill, from rapping to singing. While Serene Exile exhibits all those traits, it’s the most honed Healboi collection to date. The full production is awash in tasteful left-field flourishes but bumps with more fluidity and point than ever. Between this sharp framing and the sturdy flow of Healboi’s raps,

this extensive album is an impressively confident outing. While he proudly professes his nostalgia, Healboi’s outlook is unmistakably forward. That all culminates in Serene Exile as the mark of a fresh voice that threads a smart needle between modern and classic hip-hop.
Jacuzzi Boys, Country Westerns, Audible Parts: Sunny Miami garage-punks Jacuzzi Boys have deep Orlando history since before they became a national name and are always a welcome sight around here. But this bill’s big star bonus is Nashville’s Country Westerns, one of the best emergences in recent years. Even though they were timed to debut in the thick of the pandemic, tastemaking indie label Fat Possum Records was smart enough to gamble on them anyway. While the ill-fated 2020 was a black hole for so many artists, Country Westerns’ maiden, self-titled album was so fucking good that it still managed to kick up hot buzz despite their inability to spread the word on the road. Now, they’re finally bringing their heat here. Country Westerns’ timeless American sound is the perfect spark between classic barroom grit and eternal rock glory. It’s rock & roll with punk guts and country soul that hits the bourbon-sweet spot between Lucero and Lee Bains & the Glory Fires. Opening is Orlando’s fiery Audible Parts. (7 p.m. Friday, Jan. 12, Conduit, $15-$20) Possessed by Paul James: A fevered and soulful display of charged folk soul, a Possessed by Paul James performance is worth seeing just on musical face value alone. The purpose that fuels it is what makes PPJ an urgent force for social justice. Konrad Wert, the Texas-based but Florida-born artist behind PPJ, is a schoolteacher turned paladin who’s spun a part-time musical passion into a full-time mission that’s sent him and his family on the road to use music as a vehicle to advocate for special needs students. It’s art qua activism, delivered in a fiery spell. (8 p.m. Friday, Jan. 12, Will’s Pub, $12-$15) baolehuu@orlandoweekly.com orlandoweekly.com ● JAN. 10-16, 2024 ● ORLANDO WEEKLY

Type Out Loud
While the strict definition of a broadside is simply a large sheet of paper printed with type, it has over the centuries come to connote a strong declaration, even an attack. Political activists adopted the form used to announce events or advertise products, using its techniques of type design and broad public reach to disseminate opinion. (Poets and songwriters did the same, so the “Loud” in the title of UCF’s exhibition makes perfect sense.) Curated by fantastic local printmaker Ashley Taylor and design historian Dr. Dori Griffin, Type Out Loud functions as both a historiography of the physical ephemera and an exploration of the printing process, but we’re making it sound much too dry: Imagine concert posters, protest signs and other contemporary applications of type and wheatpaste, and even create your own at a Jan. 19 workshop. Psych! A Stand-Up Therapy Comedy Show
Winter Park’s Breakthrough Theatre stages this innovative hybrid comedy event Friday. Psych! — subtitled “A Stand-Up Therapy Comedy Show” — takes that careworn comedy trope of a comedian pouring out their slightly skewed hearts to a therapist offstage and turns it on its head. (See the sublime animated series Dr. Katz for the apotheosis of this form.) The therapy sessions happen onstage here. To wit, comedians Roo Nafasat, Donald Evans and Austin Kleeman perform stand-up sets and then engage with host, comedian and mental health professional Aimee LeCours for free-wheeling debriefings. “Spontaneous revelations” are promised, and we’re thinking that’s not hyperbole for once. 7:30 p.m., Breakthrough Theatre Company, 6900 Aloma Ave. Winter Park, breakthroughtheatre. com, $12. — MM SATURDAY, JAN. 13

Folk legend and Grammy winner Judy Collins is set to grace an Orlando stage with her presence Friday, making up for a cancellation in 2022 The 80-plus-yearold Collins will soon be back on the road, touring behind Spellbound — a new album of all original songs — with a lengthy winter jaunt that kicks off right here in Orlando. Collins, surviving and still performing even after many decades in the spotlight, was somewhat circumspect when musing on her own tips for making it through another year during a recent conversation with Creative Loafing Tampa. “I don’t know the answer to any of these questions, except that I do know that it’s one day at a time,” she said. “To show gentleness, to show respect, to show forgiveness, to be an even-handed neighbor and friend — the kindness to one another is essential.” This
Black Caligula
One of the more promising — and, frankly, terrifying — new voices in that murky nexus of Floridian industrial and dark electronics is Black Caligula. Hailing from Jacksonville [also terrifying], Black Caligula is a solo project that welds eldritch webs of noise and primitive DIY beats to a confrontational roar of accusation against a sick patriarchal society that gleefully deals in abuse and trauma and warfare. This writer has seen her play numerous times and it’s a compelling watch/listen, up there with Lydia Lunch and Yohimbe.
