Orlando restaurant makes Yelp’s 2024 ‘Top Places to Eat’ in the U.S.
In a very #OrlandoProud moment, Yelp released its annual list of the “Top 100 Places to Eat” in the U.S. last week, and one Orlando eatery made the cut. Edoboy came in at 44th in the nation. Opened in 2022, Edoboy — from Sonny Nguyen of Domu and Tori Tori — is a standing-only, intimate sushi joint in Mills 50 which landed a Michelin Guide listing after only a year in business. In his 2022 review of Edoboy, OW food critic Faiyaz Kara wrote: “For the sake of celerity, there are rules to abide by at Edoboy: No. 1, don’t stay longer than an hour; No. 2, limit nigiri orders to 12 pieces, and No. 3, don’t bring cash. Pay heed to these three commandments and ye shall be delivered superlative slivers of seafood, courtesy of head sushi chef Tyler Inthavongsa and chef Francis Varias.” Yelp, the popular crowd-sourced review website, says it reviewed user submissions, ratings, and the overall number of reviews to formulate their ‘Top Places to Eat’ list, and then finalized everything with their local “Community Managers.”
Florida House passes bill that bans minors from having social media accounts
Pointing to children’s mental health and online sexual predators, the Florida House last week passed a bill that seeks to prevent children under age 16 from having social media accounts. The House voted 106-13 to approve the measure (HB 1), a priority of House Speaker Paul Renner, R-Palm Coast. The issue will now go to the Senate. Opponents questioned the bill’s constitutionality and said it would take away the rights of parents to determine whether their children use social media. Thirteen Democrats voted against the bill, while 23 Democrats joined Republicans in supporting it. The bill would prevent minors under 16 from creating social media accounts and would require social media platforms to terminate existing accounts that are “reasonably known” by the platforms to be held by children younger than 16. It also would allow parents to request that minors’ accounts be terminated. Meta, the parent company of platforms such as Facebook and Instagram, and NetChoice, a tech industry group, last week criticized the proposal and raised the possibility that it would be challenged in court.

Florida lawmakers looking to create new criminal penalty based on fentanyl myth pushed by cops
Florida lawmakers are advancing legislation, with little push-back so far, that would validate a common myth perpetuated by law enforcement agencies regarding the ability of someone to overdose on the powerful opioid fentanyl by simply touching it or absorbing the drug through their skin. Experts say the actual risk for this is “extremely low.” There’s only one form of fentanyl that can be absorbed through the skin (prescription transdermal patches) and those aren’t being thrown at cops. The bills filed (HB 231/SB 718) would create a criminal penalty, punishable as a first-degree felony, for adults 18 and older who “expose” a first responder to fentanyl or fentanyl analogues (chemically similar substances), resulting in serious bodily injury. Under the proposed legislation, “exposure” to fentanyl is defined as causing the ingestion, inhalation, needlestick injury, or absorption of the drug through the skin or mucous membranes. What counts as “serious bodily injury” is more vaguely defined. Florida law already criminalizes the possession, sale and manufacturing of fentanyl, subject to various felony charges depending on the circumstances. In 2023, lawmakers also voted to enhance criminal penalties for unlawful distribution of the drug to someone who later overdoses or suffers “serious bodily harm.”
Speaking of children (or, as Rep. Linda Chaney likes to call them, “youth workers”), legislation that would undermine child labor protections in Florida continues to advance through Florida’s Republican-dominated legislature. One proposal (HB 49/SB 1596) would amend Florida’s child labor law to allow employers to work teens 16 and older more than 30 hours per week during the school year. It would also cut other protections for 16- and 17-year-olds, such as required breaks every four hours and not working high school students more than six days in a row. Another proposal, meanwhile, would allow teens 16 and older to work on residential construction sites (construction is one of the deadliest industries, and young workers are especially vulnerable to injuries on the job). Both industry-backed proposals have been watered down somewhat from their original versions following public pressure.
A controversial bill that could financially penalize state university and college students if they take actions that back “foreign terrorist” organizations, such as the Palestinian group Hamas, was approved by a House committee last week. The House Postsecondary Education & Workforce Subcommittee voted 11-4 to support the bill (HB 465) after lengthy debate and testimony from Florida State University students. Students who “promote a foreign terrorist organization” would be required to pay out-of-state tuition rates (which are higher than in-state rates) and would be ineligible for such things as state grants, financial aid or tuition assistance. The bill provides a definition for foreign terrorist organizations that, in part, would apply to “Hamas and Palestine Islamic Jihad.” It, of course, does not define the word “promotes.” The measure comes amid widespread campus orlandoweekly.com ● JAN. 31-FEB. 6, 2024 ● ORLANDO WEEKLY

‘DON’T GIVE UP’
VA Orlando Healthcare offers esketamine for treatment-resistant depression BY MCKENNA S CH UEL ER
E
dgardo Rosa, a veteran in Central Florida, first enlisted in the U.S Army at 25 yearsold. Originally from Puerto Rico, the retired Army Sergeant Major served for 20 years before retiring in Florida with his family. While on active duty, Rosa was deployed on three combat tours to Iraq and two to Afghanistan, leaving him with lasting memories of things he’d seen, things he’d done. The anniversaries of these dates stick with him.
For years, he dismissed signs of depression and post-traumatic stress disorder — common conditions in the veteran and military populations — even as his symptoms grew worse. “You kind of ignore it, and push it aside, and get ready for the next deployment,” Rosa tells Orlando Weekly. It wasn’t until a close friend of Rosa’s, an active duty soldier he looked up to, died by suicide in 2016 that he began to reevaluate the distress he was experiencing himself. According to the U.S.
Department of Veterans Affairs (VA), suicide is the second-leading cause of death among veterans under 45 years old. Rosa, then in his early 40s, had no idea his friend was in that kind of pain, or that he was having thoughts of ending his life. His friend’s death was a wake-up call. In a way, it saved his own life. “It kind of woke me up to the fact that, you know, I was on that road if I didn’t do something about it,” says Rosa, recounting the story in a way that lets you know he’s told it before, but that it took some time for him to finally tell it. “That’s when I really got serious about therapy and finding help.” So began Rosa’s journey in seeking help for his mental health. But, as he describes it, that journey has been a “long, tedious” process. He sought out therapy, tried various prescription medications, and got a service dog who helped him get out of the house. Temporarily, with these treatments, he would feel better.
Then things would get bad again. He’d have flashbacks, become jumpy, grow anxious in large crowds. His depressive symptoms made it difficult for him to do anything about it. He’d distance himself from family, make up excuses for why he hid himself away indoors. He felt little motivation to do much of anything that wasn’t absolutely necessary to get through the day. Rosa isn’t alone. According to Johns Hopkins Medicine, up to 33 percent of people with depression don’t respond to conventional antidepressants, which generally target brain chemicals such as serotonin, dopamine and norepinephrine. Research is mixed on how much of a role these chemicals, particularly serotonin, actually play in depression, which can be influenced by a number of socioeconomic, genetic and environmental factors. In 2019, Rosa retired from the Army and moved to DeLand — about 40 miles north of Orlando — with his family. Both he and his wife are from Puerto Rico, and it’s an easier trip back there from Florida to visit their families, compared to their other option of San Antonio, Texas. But the transition to civilian life for Rosa — as it is for many veterans — was difficult. “I retired and everything kind of got worse,” he shares. He found himself with too much time on his hands. Got too much in his own head. His depression grew worse. Rosa’s PTSD — a condition that affects roughly 29 percent of veterans from his service era — got worse. And, for the first time, he began having thoughts of suicide. During this particularly dark time in his life, his family became his North Star. Rosa didn’t talk to them about what he was struggling with. He was worried he would become a burden to them. But he also knew he had to stay alive for them. If not for himself, then for his wife and kids. “The pain will end for me, but only start for them,” he thought. The cycle of therapy, medication and relapse continued.
Making a difference
Last year, things changed. In March 2023, the Orlando VA — serving over 100,000 veterans in Central and East Florida — launched one of the state’s first and only esketamine treatment programs for treatment-resistant depression through the VA healthcare system. Treatment-resistant depression is essentially a form of depression that hasn’t been helped by other conventional, evidence-based treatments, such as behavioral therapy or other antidepressants. Esketamine is a derivative of ketamine, an anesthetic and dissociative hallucinogenic drug that is safely administered in clinical settings to relieve pain or cause sedation. Esketamine is a more potent version of ketamine, and earned approval from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration in 2019 as a treatment for people with treatment-resistant depression. Edgardo Rosa credtis esketamine for lessening his depression | Photo by McKenna Schueluer [continued from page 9]
The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs approved Spravato, a nasal spray form of esketamine, for veterans’ use almost straight away. Although this treatment can cost thousands of dollars for the general public, for veterans enrolled in the VA healthcare system, it’s completely cost-free. Even so, the rollout of this treatment across the VA has been slow. Initially, some expressed concern that the U.S. Food and Drug Administration had hastened its approval process of the drug in a politically calculated move for former President Donald Trump. The number of veteran suicides had reached a devastating record high of 6,796 in 2018. But Dr. Roopa Chavda, a clinical psychiatrist at the Orlando VA Medical Center in Lake Nona, tells Orlando Weekly she’s been encouraged so far by the results they’ve seen here with veterans through the local program. The only other VA health system in Florida so far that offers the treatment is located in Gainesville. When Dr. Chavda’s patients first walk in, she says, you can see they’re carrying a weight on their shoulders. But with the initiation of treatment, spread out in two-hour sessions under clinical supervision, some veterans see results within just a few weeks. “You’ll see them actually smile and hear them laugh for the first time,” Dr. Chavda tells Orlando Weekly, unable herself to hold back a smile. Rosa swears he felt a difference within himself in just the first week. He felt lighter. And he wasn’t the only one who noticed. His family did, too. “My wife mentioned it. … She was like, ‘You look better. I think this is working.’” According to Chavda, that isn’t just a placebo effect. Not everyone feels a difference that
quickly, but some do. On the flip side, the treatment itself isn’t guaranteed to be effective for everyone. The Orlando VA’s esketamine treatment team — made up of two psychiatrists and two nurses — generally recommends patients give it a go for at least eight sessions. The difference in those whom the treatment does help can be immensely gratifying. One veteran in the program, says Chavda, recently announced he’d started taking singing lessons. “This is, again, another person who would not step out of the house, is [now] going to church, is taking singing lessons.” As a provider, she says, “I think, OK, we really made a difference.” Rosa, for his part, wasn’t terribly hesitant when his physician first presented the treatment opportunity to him nearly a year ago. He was willing to try anything to get more lasting relief. He was scared of what might happen if he didn’t. Plus, Rosa had already received infusions of ketamine for back pain years before while he was still on active duty. So he had some familiarity with the drug and its common side effects: a temporary sense of spaciness, losing track of time, some heightened sensitivity to noise. Esketamine can cause some other temporary side effects, such as nausea and dizziness, which generally peak 40 minutes after use. The drug has a low potential for misuse, but this is not unlike most other prescription medication (e.g. benzodiazepines) if that medication is taken in ways other than as prescribed. The drug ketamine, from which it’s derived, has a history of being misused recreationally as a “party drug,” but it’s primarily used as an anesthetic in clinical settings, like hospitals. Unlike the nasal spray form of esketamine, ketamine is not FDAapproved for any psychiatric condition.
The esketamine treatment program through the VA is carefully dosed and structured in a way to prevent misuse and to prevent side effects from lingering for too long, according to Dr. Chavda. The treatment is provided entirely onsite at the VA facility — it’s not available for take-home use — under the close supervision of a physician and nurse, who can oversee patients’ vitals signs and ensure there are no complications that arise. Patients begin with treatment sessions twice per week to start, with each session lasting about two hours. This allows time for the drug’s effects, usually including some drowsiness, to wear off. Most patients sleep or doze off during this time, says Chavda. This was true for Rosa, too. “Once I woke up, I was fine,” he says. Chavda says esketamine is only FDA-approved for the treatment of major depressive disorder and suicidal ideation — not for post-traumatic stress disorder. Additionally, there are some eligibility requirements that a healthcare provider will consider before referring patients for this treatment. Ideal candidates, according to the VA, are veterans 65 years old and younger who have tried at least four antidepressant medications without seeing lasting relief, and who have taken at least two supplemental medications — such as a second antidepressant or antipsychotic medication — on top of the first to boost its effects, with no luck. Essentially: You’ve reached the point where you’ve exhausted your options. Medication isn’t the only treatment for depression (a living wage can help, too, actually), but it’s one of the most widely used. There are some other characteristics that could make patients ineligible: a history of severe heart problems, a history of seizures, other unstable medical conditions or an active substance use disorder. Substance use disorder, also known as substance abuse or addiction, is more prevalent in veterans, who may begin to misuse drugs or alcohol as a means to cope with mental health or trauma. Chavda says they won’t turn away veterans with a history of substance use disorder (or someone who’s taking medication like Suboxone or methadone for opioid addiction). “We don’t want to exclude them,” she emphasizes. But patients interested in the esketamine program do need to be medically stable, generally substance-free and able to engage in their treatment in order to participate.
Stay in the fight
After beginning his treatment last year, Rosa is currently considered in remission. He attended 12 treatment sessions all in all: two doses per week for four weeks, one dose a week for four more weeks, and then a few more after that, spread out. It’s not a cure, he stresses, and Chavda seconds this. Continuing to see a therapist, psychiatrist,
whatever is recommended by the treatment team based on the patient’s needs, is an important part of recovery. Rosa himself still attends therapy and takes medication for his depression. The VA also offers a Veterans Crisis Line for veterans experiencing significant stress, depression or thoughts of suicide. It’s a free service, confidential, and you don’t need to be enrolled in the VA system or healthcare to call and get help. There are still days when Rosa wakes up and feels sad. But it’s not as overwhelming, as overpowering as before. “I’m not in my room stuck for, you know, two, three weeks at a time with no contact,” he explains. Life is more manageable. He can attend his trade school program. Go out with his family. Those are things he couldn’t always do before, he says, when the depression was really bad. As someone who has struggled with major depression and PTSD for over 12 years, Rosa describes the esketamine treatment as “life-altering.” But he’s also mindful of how the logistical barriers of treatment could hinder access. Rosa lives an hour away from the Lake Nona VA facility, and initially had to be at the VA twice a week, to start. Then he’d stay two hours each time for monitoring. He usually asked someone else to drive him, too, just in case some of the effects of the medication lingered. But for him, “it was worth it.” Today, he volunteers with veteran-focused nonprofits and is four months into a technical college program studying auto mechanics. Before he received the esketamine, his depression made it difficult for him to even conceive of long-term goals. That’s how it works, he says. “Your goal is to make it that day.” That’s not the case anymore. The current plan is to complete his trade education. Eventually, he wants to open a nonprofit where he can provide cost-free auto services to underprivileged families. He’s looking into his options for setting that up. Rosa understands that some other vets may have reservations about the esketamine treatment, and he didn’t originally plan on becoming any sort of spokesperson for it either. But he knows how important it can be to hear the benefits from someone who has lived through it. “If you hear a doctor saying it, it’s one thing,” he says.“But to hear a fellow veteran that’s going through the same thing you’re going through, that understands what you’re going through, saying, ‘I know what you’re going through. I’ve been there. I’m there right now, and this works.’ It’s different. It has a little bit more value to it.” To other veterans out there, Rosa offers this message: “Don’t give up.” “That’s something that, in the military, it’s ingrained in us, you know? Stay in the fight,” he says. “I think we’ve got to take that mentality and bring it into, you know, the fight against depression and PTSD.” Central Florida veterans interested in esketamine treatment through the Orlando VA can ask for a referral from their mental health provider. Change is in the air at Disney World, with a revamped Cirque du Soleil show and a final bow for the Country Bear Jamboree’s classic repertoire Last week, Walt Disney World’s
most fervent fans and dedicated detractors — which are often difficult to distinguish from each other — descended upon the Magic Kingdom to demonstrate that the only thing theme park fans hate worse than aging attractions not being updated is when aging attractions are updated. This is less of an issue at Universal Orlando and SeaWorld, since nobody shed a tear or started an online petition over Woody Woodpecker’s dated KidZone being demolished for USF’s upcoming DreamWorks land, or Penguin Trek’s roller coaster tracks replacing Antarctica’s extinct dark ride. But ever since the seminal yet failed effort to save Mr. Toad’s Wild Ride, Disney devotees have learned that there’s no faster way to instantly transform a dated C-ticket struggling to turn its turnstiles into everyone’s “favorite ride ever” than to announce its imminent closure. After watching Disney downgrade classics like Journey Into Imagination and Horizons (or simply shutter them, like Wonders of Life), it’s little wonder that attraction enthusiasts experience agita every time the final curtain falls on another long-running experience. So it came as little surprise that, following decades as an eternally half-empty hibernation haven, the Country Bear Jamboree — which was one of the park’s only exclusive opening-day attractions (along with Hall of Presidents) developed with Walt’s personal input before his death — played to packed houses during the weeks prior to the animatronic show’s final bow on Jan. 26. And perhaps it was appropriate, or at least ironic, that the theater unexpectedly shut down shortly before its scheduled closing, stranding several hundred hopeful viewers of the final performances in a stalled queue that stretched all the way past Pecos Bill’s restaurant into Adventureland.
An updated ‘Drawn to Life’ is more true to the spirt of the Cirque | Photo by Seth Kubersky
When closing time arrived without the attraction reopening, guests were walked out past the silent stage and given souvenir posters as a consolation prize. Technical difficulties were officially blamed, but I believe the ursine actors were protesting plans to replace their repertoire of vintage Americana with newly-recorded Disney ditties. The fur-covered cast will look largely the same, and the “Ballad of Davy Crockett” might be part of the new production. However, I suspect cherished childhood tunes with questionable themes like “Blood on the Saddle” and “All the Guys Who Turn Me on Turn Me Down” will be long gone when the new Country Bear Musical Jamboree opens later this year. Look for that debut, along with the anticipated arrival of Tiana’s Bayou Adventure atop the former Splash Mountain, to launch a long-term revamp of the entire Frontierland, which may weave New Orleans elements into the Old West theming, and eventually expand with additional rides behind Big Thunder Mountain Railroad. Thankfully, on the same evening that Big Al’s groupies were having their dreams dashed, instead of standing in line I was on the opposite end of Disney property, enjoying undeniable proof that changing a show can actually be a good thing. Although not quite ranking in my personal S-Tier alongside Las Vegas’ LOVE and Mystère, Cirque du Soleil’s La Nouba was an A-grade anchor of Disney Springs ever since the area was known as Downtown Disney. I was deeply disappointed to declare its successor Drawn to Life a mere B+ effort upon my first viewing in late 2021, and my opinion was only marginally improved after a second viewing six months later. However, after being invited to see the adjustments Cirque has implemented since then, I’m happy to say that they’ve addressed nearly all of my critiques and created a must-see marvel.
The bones were always solid in this surreal fusion of Cirque’s circus artistry and Disney storytelling, which follows young Julie through a symbol-laden dreamscape derived from her late father’s favorite animated films. Drawn to Life’s amazing international circus acts are even more breathtaking than before; a stiff stiltwalking sequence has been replaced with a mesmerizing duo of foot-juggling Icarian Games acrobats, and the enchanting Mary Blair homage is now even more dynamic, thanks to a vibrant trio of swinging aerialists. Some existing acts, like The Old Mill-inspired wheel windmill, have also been enhanced with sharper lighting and tighter pacing. Most notably, the formerly all-female finale now features high-flying analogues of both Julie and her father (wearing sketch-like facial appliances that look sorta creepy up close), making for an ending that’s much more impactful than the original in terms of both adrenaline and emotion. Beyond those big changes, it is the subtle tweaks made to the show’s tone that I most appreciated. Dialogue has been judiciously edited during the introduction and elsewhere, and the in-jokes and references to Disney intellectual property have been sufficiently pruned to feel more like gentle parodies, instead of pushy product placements. Even the musical score seems to have been slightly softened, so as not to hammer on the earworm chorus of “Let It Go” quite as insistently. While my first take on Drawn to Life was that it pandered to what Disney visitors are perceived to expect, instead of having the courage to be authentically Cirque du Soleil, today’s show finally strikes a harmonious balance between these two iconic brands. skubersky@orlandowekly.com orlandoweekly.com ● JAN. 31-FEB. 6, 2024 ● ORLANDO WEEKLY

Tibby’s New Orleans Kitchen
Mardis Gras 2024 Mardi Gras Roots in Orlando
ALL PHOTOS BY TIBBY’S NEW ORLEANS KITCHEN
“I remember when my dad and grandpa were creating Tibby’s,” stated Jake Wheeler, oldest son of Brian Wheeler. “They consistently traveled to New Orleans to come up with menu ideas and return with specialty items for the restaurant walls – like a house door from the 9th Ward that was marked uninhabitable after the hurricane. They wanted the restaurant to look, smell and taste as if you were in New Orleans. It’s a special place, just like my Great Uncle Tibby.”
J
ake Wheeler was just four years old when he experienced his first Mardi Gras Celebration. As the oldest son of Tibby’s New Orleans Kitchen founder, Brian Wheeler, his family roots hail from The Big Easy.
“I remember watching the parades with my family,” stated Wheeler. “We’d claim our spot along the route in either mid-city or uptown. There were more than 10 of us, so we cooked out making jambalaya along the parade route. We also threw the football around and played tag before the parade started. As it was coming through, we danced to the marching bands and caught beads. I’ve now been to 15 of them and enjoy every second. Being there with my NOLA family made it even more special – especially the memories built with my dad and Grandpa Chester.” Today, Wheeler brings this centuries old celebration to Orlando – actually, Winter Park and Altamonte Springs to be exact – through his family’s restaurant, Tibby’s New Orleans Kitchen, named after his Uncle Walter Tabony. The restaurant serves up all the New Orleans delicacies from Muffaletta and Po Boys to classic dishes such as Shrimp and Andouille Cheddar Grits and Étouffée – and more. The vibe comes straight out of New Orleans with authentic artifacts, paintings and photos transporting visitors to the French Quarter. Tibby, himself, was born in NOLA, grew up during the Great Depression, and fought for the U.S. during World War II. He then built his home in the Lower 9th Ward and built a fish camp on Bayou Bienvenue. Tibby was a Hurricane Katrina survivor and a huge New Orleans Saints fan. He lived to be 93.
Just like a “krewe” or parade in New Orleans, Tibby’s changes its Mardi Gras theme every year. This year’s theme is the “1979 Easton High School Prom”. Naturally there’s a connection, “My aunt was the school’s principal back then,” continued Wheeler. “We even have a marching band banner from the school dating back to ‘79. This theme is exciting for us because the public will find it incredibly fun and engaging, while the New Orleans natives will appreciate the reference to the historic school.” And because it’s a flashback to the 70’s, it’ll be “Groovy” time! Guests dining at Tibby’s will find a righteous spread of Cajun and Creole classics along with a special, limited time Mardi Gras menu: Classic King Cake, a collaboration with Olde Hearth Bakery; Cajun Kettle Chicken Wings, a popular dish returning to the menu just for the Mardi Gras season; Southern Chicken Chili with Jalapeño Corn Bread; and the ever-popular Shrimp & Gritcakes Monica Style, a new take on a classic New Orleans recipe comprised of Blackened Shrimp and Andouille Sausage, served over Boudin Grit Cakes and topped with a rich cream sauce.
To compliment the Mardi Gras specials, Tibby’s will also offer new, handcrafted cocktails inspired by the vibrant spirit of Mardi Gras: Disco Twist, vanilla vodka, amaretto,

(Of the legal drinking age, of course.); and Jocco’s Jester Ale, a custom cream ale brewed specifically for Tibby’s Mardi Gras Celebration by Hidden Springs Ale Works, it’s a fantastic combination of King Cake flavors and a golden ale. Tibby’s team has gone all-out to make their restaurants look like a Mardi Gras inspired High School Prom. They partnered with local artist Sandy Bonus to create immersive pieces of art to adorn the walls. “Each year Tibby’s brings me a new challenge, but I had a blast with this one; Just wait until you see the Beignet’s dressed up as the Prom King & Queen,” said Bonus. When the sun sets, Disco music cranks up and the Disco Ball turns on, creating one of the most fun dining experiences in town. The main highlight of the celebration is the special events. Every Sunday, enjoy a live band from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. along with brunch featuring bottomless mimosas beer. On Friday, February 9, Nola Nite will feature a DJ spinning New Orleans hits mixed with modern tunes; and a $10 Hurricane drink special. (Time: 6-11 p.m. Winter Park and 6-10 p.m. Altamonte Springs) On Saturday, February 10 from 1-4 p.m., Family Gras will feature live family entertainment, a balloon artist, and drink specials (for parents only!). A perfect daytime chance to get the entire family in the Mardi Gras spirit! On Sunday, February 12 from 11 a.m. – 2 p.m., request your favorite songs and sing-along during the high-energy Dueling Pianos Brunch, also featuring bottomless drink specials. Then on Tuesday, February 13 from 5-10 p.m., Fat Tuesday turns into an outdoor dance party with a stilt walker, live music, a DJ and $10 Hurricanes all day. The Winter Park location will feature live music from DJ Chino and Musical Seduction, while Tru Phonic and DJ NonStop spin tunes at the Altamonte Springs location. “It’s one of the best ways we can engage the community and share our family’s culture,” continued Wheeler. “It also allows us the chance to collaborate with Orlando-based businesses - musicians, a bakery, and a brewery – all working together to create the most authentic Mardi Gras experience in town.”
So, dust off those platforms, put on your shades, and join Tibby’s New Orleans Kitchen for Mardis Gras. Reservations are highly recommended, but we’re not accepting reservations on Fat Tuesday, walk-ins only. [ food + drink] MISTER O1 EXTRAORDINARY PIZZA 1210 International Parkway, Lake Mary 561-631-9035 mistero1.com $$

THE TALENTED MISTER O1
Mister O1 Extraordinary Pizza in Lake Mary shines with its signature star-shaped pies. BY FA IYAZ KARA
R
enato Viola’s visa became our discover card into his world of pizza. The O-1 visa granted to him by the United States government for his “extraordinary ability” was well justified — I mean the man does with pizza dough what Curly Neal did with a basketball. But being crowned a world champion for tossing pie rounds every which way isn’t all that makes him extraordinary. Viola also makes a perfetto pizza evidenced by the prestigious competitions he’s won, none more important than the Giropizza d’Europa in 2005. It put the talented 24-year-old on the proverbial map, and around the map he went baking at private events across Italy and elsewhere. It even led to the creation of his Louix XIII Pizza, an 8-inch bank
breaker Gucci’d up with three types of caviar, red Acciaroli prawns from Cilento, European spiny lobster, Mediterranean squilla mantis and organic buffalo mozzarella. It’s paired with the eponymous Louis XIII cognac, 1995 Krug Clos du Mesnil Champagne and Cardenal Mendoza Carta Real Romate Finos brandy. At €8,300, it’s the world’s most expensive pizza and, I gather, extraordinary enough for US Citizenship and Immigration Services. When Viola opened Visa-O1 Extraordinary Pizza in Miami Beach 10 years ago, the Southern Italian was introduced to the litigious spirit of America. Seemed the credit card company wasn’t all too pleased with the name, so he changed it to Mister O1 Extraordinary Pizza
and the sharks were kept at bay. One thing that didn’t change: Viola’s pizza recipe. You’d think a pizzaiolo from Agropoli, a town about 60 miles south of Naples, would be a staunch proponent of the Neapolitan style, but no. Viola’s pizzas are delicate, thin-crust wonders — kind of like a cross between Neapolitan and Roman-style pizza. The dough is crafted from finely ground “00” flour and undergoes a 72- to 96-hour ferment before being fired in electric Cuppone ovens at 600 degrees Fahrenheit for five or so minutes. The result is a crust that crisp yet pliable, not one that crackles and breaks. In the kitchen of Mister O1’s Lake Mary outpost, I counted 10 workers dressed in white tending to the hundreds of pizzas they churn out every day, embellishing each with toppings trad and mod. But what sets Viola’s creations apart from others, indeed what makes them “extraordinary,” are the star-shaped pizzas. Triangular-shaped, ricotta-filled pockets form an eight-pointed crust adding another textural dimension to the 13-inch rounds. In the case of the Star Luca ($18.99), a burning sun of tomato sauce, mozzarella, spicy salami calabrese and threads of basil form a heavenly bake. It floats in the same crusty constellation as the Claudio ($18.99) streaked with comet trails of creamy burrata stracciatella and white truffle oil. Some
ate it with a fork and knife; we resorted to the fold-and-scarf technique. “I like to add some spicy olive oil into the ricotta pockets,” one of the servers says to me and I’m game for a little heat. Now Mister O1 sells its branded bottles of spicy olive oil ($15.99) and white truffle oil ($17.99), but don’t fall for their products and their lofty prices — just keep your feet on the ground and spend your money on the ‘zas. For the ricotta- or octagram-averse, the Maria ($18.99) presents refreshing bites of arugula topped with tomatoes and Prosciutto di Parma. There’s no skimping on the salty folds of ham either, nor the shaved mozzarella or Italian parmesan for that matter. For a saucier mouthful, the Bella Margherita ($15.99) feels like an instant classic. It looks the part too with its globs of fior di latte partially veiled by fresh basil leaves. It’s clear the importance Mister O1 places on ingredients and if that oft-used restaurant slogan “taste the difference” rings true, it’s here. Many of the pizzas, BTW, are named after Viola’s close friends and OG customers. I don’t personally know Alessandra, but the red-sauced Alessandra Jalapeno ($16.99) with its racy pepper rings, mushrooms and avocado slivers is a pie I’d share with its namesake any day. But my favorite has to be the Coffee Paolo ($18.99). Raw honey and a dusting of ground coffee go toe-to-toe with rich gorgonzola and spicy salami Calabrese. Put a star-struck emoji next to this one ’cuz it’s out of this world. Evidently Viola dreamed of the ingredients in his sleep. When he woke up, he went straight to his pizzeria and made the sweet and savory original. I will say the Nutella and banana calzone (3 for $13.99) damn near sent me to dreamland. We were eating the weighty dessert outside (the weather was nice), but the filling kept squirting out and onto the sidewalk after every bite. We had no choice but to chew into them while leaning over a bed of jasmine, butts out.“You’re leaking chocolate on the grass!” says an excited child pointing to the Nutella-covered grass. “Yeah kid, please don’t lick it.” Mister O1’s Lake Mary location sits in the former Peach Valley Café space in Heathrow. It’s the pizzeria’s 17th location which has grown into an international chain with outlets from Dallas to Riyadh. No doubt success breeds growth as there are rumors of another pizzeria opening at The Fountains at Bay Hill in Dr. Phillips. Hey, when Mister O1 can bake dough and rake it in, it’s got to be sweet music to Viola’s ears. fkara@orlandoweekly.com

Grace Potter wants to soundtrack your road trip | Photo by Adrien Broom
‘I’M A F*CKING ROCK STAR’ A rejuvenated Grace Potter embraces her truth and hits the open road BY GABBY MACO GAY
G
race Potter shares her four road trip essentials with us: driver’s license, a hammer, water and her newest album, Mother Road, blasting through the car speakers. Your soundtrack of choice is a vital component to any long drive, capturing the energy and tone you want set for the journey. Potter’s Mother Road checks those boxes. It’s an amalgam of her life experiences, inspired by a solo road trip she took back in the summer of 2021. The magic of cruising Route 66 — once dubbed “the mother of all roads” in John Steinbeck’s The Grapes of Wrath, hence the album name — helped shape what Potter considers to be a turning point in her career. “As we got into tracking, I didn’t have a major plan of attack, I just knew that I was proud of the music I had made. And I captured the essence of who I really am by letting that freak flag fly a little higher this time than it ever has before,” Potter says. “It was so comfortable. There’s such a warm embrace of myself, there’s a lot of self-acceptance
and just honoring who I have become, spending more of my time on the road than off the road.” Potter grew up in Vermont, citing her hometown memories as another source of inspiration for the lyrics of Mother Road. This is a record that not only provided Potter with a turning point in her extensive, decades-long career as a songwriter and musician, but also in her understanding of herself. “It all came down to growing up and recognizing how much I don’t want to grow up, or how much it is impossible for me to escape the clutches of my idiosyncrasies and the things that have come to define me, and then escaping them anyways,” Potter says. “You know, really coming into your own is about being comfortable with not knowing everything. And I think that this is a pretty immature expression of that, but that was intentional. I’m not necessarily the most mature person, but I’m certainly well-seasoned. I’ve worked these muscles for a long time. And I think I know
myself really well.” The title song,“Mother Road,” is the one Potter believes is the guiding roadmap through the rest of the record. But when asked about the most defining lyrical moment on the album, “Lady Vagabond” comes to Potter’s mind first. “The mistakes we make, and even the crashes that we’ve endured, are epic reminders of how far we’ve come. And there’s a majesty in honoring the trail of destruction, as well as all of the good intentions that can sometimes get in the way of discovering your own truth,” says Potter. Touring, especially behind an album so intertwined with the concept of finding yourself while traveling, has Potter thrilled to be back out on the wide open road. “I really believe in the world of collaboration, in any capacity, whether it’s through music or other forms of art,” says Potter.“This is my calling. It’s definitely why I was put on this planet. So I’m going to kick up stardust in every direction from here on out.”
GRACE POTTER 7 p.m. Friday, Feb. 2 House of Blues Disney Springs, Lake Buena Vista houseofblues.com $35-$85
Potter recalls the warm welcome she received from fans at her last Orlando show, comparing it to a big family reunion or homecoming show. Even when far away from her own hometown back in Vermont, Potter finds comfort in the crowds that show up to support and experience her music alongside her. Mother Road is a source of new beginnings and realizations for Potter, but she hopes it to be an experience that can also be shared with others — a quintessential road trip album you can blast with the windows down, discovering a new part of yourself along the way. “It’s just been a dream to coalesce all of my life experience in the zany world of being a rock star, which I really do say now, I didn’t say that,” laughs Potter. “I was like, ‘Yeah, I’m a musician. I’m an entertainer, I’m a songwriter and storyteller.’ Fuck that. I’m a fucking rock star.” music@orlandoweekly.com

More than just fun, Black Box Blackout’s Orlando premiere is the next level up by an ambitious arts group that’s pushing to be on the vanguard of a new generation of Black voices. Unlike the top-down feel of institutional Black History Month functions, BBB’s spirit springs from the grassroots of youth with an outlook that’s vital and forward. While other celebrations may spotlight the past, BBB is more about the present and the future. As the name “You’re Invited to the Barbecue” implies, their inaugural Orlando event promises to be an affair that’s both Black and inclusive. (Noon-8 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 3, 3610 S. BLACK BOX BLACKOUT DEBUTS
Black History Month is about to kick off and, with it, a procession of cultural happenings. Of them all, however, there’s something especially promising and organic about this weekend’s Orlando debut of aspiring arts organizer Black Box Blackout. While events like the City of Orlando’s annual MLK Concert (7 p.m. Friday, Feb. 2, Steinmetz Hall, free) are valuable and necessary, their pulse usually has an official tenor. Black Box Blackout’s event, on the other hand, will have a decidedly next-gen heartbeat. Founded by distinguished jazz singer Kristen Warren, Black Box Blackout is a young, community-minded organization dedicated to championing Black artists. Since its 2022 inception, the Melbourne-based movement has been showcasing and celebrating Black excellence through a series of events featuring a spectrum of arts including music, spoken word, theater and visual art, among others. Now, Warren is bringing the BBB energy to Orlando. While BBB and its founder are headquartered in Brevard County, Warren has been a known figure in the Orlando scene for years, often performing alongside some of the city’s smartest

Wednesday, Hotline TNT, They Hate Change: Pound for pound, this dynamic lineup is the week’s best indie bill. North Carolina headliners Wednesday are a Dead Oceans-signed band with an original and evocative sound that blends country, shoegaze and brawny 1990s indie rock. Only good things can come from a band that worships fuzz guitars and Drive-By Truckers as much as they do. NYC’s Hotline TNT, a recent addition to the Third Man Records stable, are also a hot-buzzing contender on the new wave of shoegaze. Finally, Tampa alt-rap act They Hate Change have been shattering orthodoxy since breaking out on Jagjaguwar. It’s an all-star roster of music that is absolutely now. (6 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 4, The Social, $18) Twisted Pine: No question, Boston’s Twisted Pine are noteworthy as a fresh, young progressive-folk act that’s connecting the dots between roots tradition and modern pop to draw American music as an unbroken continuum. But the biggest news about this show is that it’s the debut of Judson’s Live, the newest and most intimate venue in the Dr. Phillips Center. Unlike the formal theater setups of its other rooms, Judson’s will run like an old-school supper club with table-style seating, drinks and proper dining. Appropriately, the live performances will lean jazz or jazz-adjacent. With its 150-seat capacity, the intimacy of engagement will be unparalleled in the complex. To alleviate the exclusivity, most acts will do two shows per evening. Be the first to check out downtown’s poshest new listening room. America’s funniest self-proclaimed pimp, Katt Williams, is ready to turn up the laughter in Orlando, when he brings his “The Dark Matter Tour” to town for a twonight stand. (Second night added due to a voraciously popular demand.) The Cincinnati-born and Ohio-raised comedian got his start in local improv clubs doing standup, which exploded into a mega-career across various media. To date, he has won an Emmy Award for his guest role in the series Atlanta, appeared in several movies and has been featured in music videos for artists like Outkast and Ludacris. Get ready to rage at Travis Scott’s “Utopia — Circus Maximus” concert Wednesday at the Kia Center. With popular hits like “Topia Twins,” “I Know?” and “FE!N” (which he apparently played a mind-blowing 10 times at his recent show in Brooklyn), fans can expect a show that will keep them up and out of their seats the whole night. This will be one of the final stops on a tour that

Reaction to this tour —which presented a high-energy night of bleeding-edge production and anthems old and new — have been positive, with Scott a relentlessly energetic performer. Sevendust & Static-X
Consider this a warm-up for or very worthy substitution to Welcome to Rockville in May. Nu-metal survivors and heavy-music lifers Static X and Sevendust are out on a second leg of their co-headlining Machine Killer tour and hitting Orlando this weekend. There’s an element of vindication and nostalgia here: In 1999, the two thenrising bands touring together, and nearly a quartercentury later, they remain fast friends and creatively viable entities (as is touring opener Dope, who was on the original run as well). Speaking of creatively viable, Sevendust are promoting their 14th album, Truth Killer, and Static-X dropped Project: Regeneration Vol. 2 just a few days ago, crucially featuring the last remaining vocal performances and music from late frontperson Wayne Static. Two more enticements: The Amphitheater Pavilion is a great place for a show like this, with plenty of elbow room for moshing and general revelry; and Sevendust have dropped a couple hints that they’re looking to wrap things up. The choice is clear. And don’t forget to bring earplugs. 8 p.m., Orlando Amphitheater, 4603 W. Colonial Drive, orlandoamphitheater.com, $39.50. — MM SATURDAY, FEB. 3
