In December, we published a story by reporter McKenna Schueler about a proposal that aims to bring out-of-town film projects back to the Orlando area,“Orange County aims to ‘resurrect’ film industry with new film incentive program.” One reader wrote in to reminisce about the rush of production seen locally in the 1990s.

¶ The ‘Second Gold Rush,’ a filmmaker’s testimonial

I’m one of the final holdouts of the thousands that arrived in Orlando in the 1990s deemed the “Second Gold Rush.” Soon, both Universal Production Group (Norm Rice) and Disney-MGM (Bob Allen) had their stages full. Oscar-nominated films, directors and producers flooded Orlando. Kathy Ramsberger (and before her, Cathy Savino) headed up the Metro Orlando Film and Television Office. Ramsberger was instrumental in bringing in numerous movies and TV shows and over 200 support companies, including Chapman-Leonard, Panavision and Century 3. There were several talent agencies and local actors were working. Patty Jenkins’ Monster garnered a Oscar for Charlize Theron, and other films such as John Singleton’s Rosewood and Warner Bros.’ Passenger 57 showed what we could accomplish at budgets below Hollywood standards.

A major state incentive helped by Jeb Bush and Mel Martinez of $500 million in state tax breaks and deals on everything from hotels and restaurants brought in major productions.

The indies enjoyed a life here as well on the heels of the wildly successful Blair Witch Project from independent Haxan Films. Valencia College’s film program, run by Ralph Clemente, was called by Steven Spielberg the best hands-on film program in the world. The Florida Motion Picture and Television Association (FMPTA), with 16 chapters and 5,000 members statewide, overlooked

the business and production side of the industry. Florida, already known as a location state, was fast becoming one of the largest film production centers, hence the tag line “Hollywood East” in 1990-2005.

In argument it’s tough to conclude the demise of a industry, the fall from grace, the departure of thousands back to California, North Carolina, Georgia or even Toronto all film centers offering better incentives. But not unlike the real California Gold Rush of 1849, it was over basically before it began in Orlando. Some say the unions or lack thereof were the main problem; others say budgets ran overboard because of the distance between Central Florida and Southern California. Others blame the quality of the product and several major scams that happened locally becoming national news stories, such as the prison sentences for Lou Pearlman (Trans Continental) and Hugh Parks (Quest Studios) for fraud. Others simply say, Orlando just gave up when things got bad.

For myself, I had Indieclub Orlando going with 800 members, a TV show called Behind the Indie Camera, and in 2000, I was able to argue for tougher talent agency licensing laws with the help of State Film Commissioner [Rebecca] Mattingly and assistant to the Governor Robert Grimm. Florida became known for having the toughest talent and modeling agency licensing laws, protecting our actors and models from scams.

I continue to direct today, mainly feature documentaries in which allows me to travel from California to Florida with bases in both states. I currently have streaming Electric Heart, the Don Ellis Story (Arthaus and Medicci TV) and I’m in production on Return to the Misfits, the True Tale of a Young Buckaroo. I’m also in development on The Fighting Seabee — What Dad Never Told Me

New Florida laws come online, lawmakers file bill to address food insecurity in 2025 legislative session, state unemployment rate rises and other news you may have missed last week.

» Social media bans, voter registration applications, and more Florida laws now in effect

From banning minors from social media to imposing harsher penalties for getting too close to first responders, nine new laws officially took effect in Florida on New Year’s Day. HB 3 requires 14- and 15-year-olds to get their parents’ permission to create accounts on social media platforms that use “addictive features” such as infinite scrolling and push notifications. Kids younger than 14 can’t have accounts, even with their parents’ permission. Although the law is in effect, Florida Attorney General Ashley Moody agreed to delay enforcement until a federal judge decides whether to block HB 3 pending resolution of the legal dispute between major tech companies and the state. U.S.

District Judge Mark Walker will hear arguments on Feb. 28. Another new law, HB 135, prohibits the Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles from using a voter registration application to change someone’s party affiliation without a signature authorizing the change. Yet another, SB 184, makes it a misdemeanor for people to come within 25 feet of a first responder “engaged in the lawful performance of a legal duty” if the first responder has warned the person to stay away. That law garnered backlash from groups such as the First Amendment Foundation, which called it blatantly unconstitutional and warned it would prevent citizen journalists from documenting police misconduct. » College Park Café has reopening date and new name after Christmas Eve fire

Neighborhood mainstay College Park Café has announced a reopening date and a name change after rebounding from a disastrous Christmas Eve fire. The diner, located at 2304 Edgewater Drive, has been slinging the metaphorical hash to College Park denizens in one form or another since the 1950s. This past Dec. 24, however, the cafe unwittingly became the site of an after-hours grease fire, resulting in total closure over the holidays. Owners Alan Saunders and Joey Eckenfel announced via social media this week that the diner would be back in business within days, and that a name change was in order. So the doors will be (re)opening for College Park Diner any day now, with a revamped kitchen. Workers at the eatery launched a GoFundMe campaign to keep staff paid during the closure. On some mornings, employees set up out front of the Café serving up coffee. College Park Diner opens for business on Saturday, Jan. 10.

» Florida lawmakers file bipartisan bill encouraging construction of grocery stores in food deserts

Reps. Michelle Rayner, a Democrat from St. Pete, and Fiona McFarland, a Republican from Sarasota, have co-sponsored a bill for the upcoming 2025 state legislative session to tackle food insecurity through land development. HB 89 would allow local governments to authorize “small-footprint grocery stores” in food-insecure areas, as designated by the state Office of Economic and Demographic Research. The bill defines food-insecure areas as places where the poverty rate is at least 20 percent or where the median family income is at or below 80 percent of the state’s median family income. Additionally, in urban communities, at least 33 percent of the population must live more than a mile away from a supermarket for the law to apply. The distance increases to 10 miles for rural communities. The goal is to increase affordable, accessible healthy food options for residents. Grocery stores built in food-insecure communities must earn at least 30 percent of their revenue from selling nutritious food, such as fruits, vegetables, whole grains and low-fat dairy products. According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture, 12 percent of households in Florida dealt with food insecurity between 2021 and 2023, meaning they couldn’t afford enough food for the entire family.

» Florida’s unemployment rate goes up, officials worry about 20-somethings leaving the state

Florida’s unemployment rate ticked up to 3.4 percent in November, after holding steady at 3.3 percent since April, according to a report released by the state Department of Commerce. The new rate reflects an estimated 376,000 Floridians qualifying as out of work in mid-November — 7,000 more

than in October — from a labor force of 11.015 million people. The labor force was down by 14,000 people from October and 46,000 from November 2023. State economists attribute the reduction in the labor force to a rise in retirees. But a Florida Chamber Foundation report this year also cited what it called an “out migration” from the state of a sizable number of people ages 20 to 29. The national unemployment rate last month was 4.2 percent. In the Orlando metro, specifically, unemployment rested at 3.5 percent. The highest rate was in the Homosassa Springs area at 5.5 percent. The Villages and Sebring areas were at 5.1 percent. However, the statewide rate is seasonally adjusted, while the metro rates are not.

» Buddy MacKay, Florida’s last Democratic governor, dies at 91 Former Gov. Buddy MacKay, a longtime Florida politician and Democrat who became governor for nearly a month following the abrupt death of Gov. Lawton Chiles in late 1998, died in his sleep on New Year’s Eve surrounded by family. MacKay was the last Democrat to serve as governor in Florida (yes, it’s been that long), marking the bridge between two political eras. During his time as lieutenant governor, MacKay took an active role in the Chiles administration and was repeatedly tapped by the governor to shepherd difficult projects, including trying to steer the state’s troubled child welfare agency and assist with Hurricane Andrew recovery. Some of his former colleagues described MacKay as a progressive for his time. “Buddy was a man with a big, positive, thoughtful and progressive vision for Florida,” said Doug Cook, a former secretary of the state Agency for Health Care Administration. “You know, he really, he really loved the state. Some people pursue power because it’s fun. You know, it’s fun to exercise power and that goes into it, but others pursue power to serve. And Buddy came to serve because he loved Florida.”

LOOK FOR THE HELPERS

At the beginning of this new year, we want to uplift community organizations who helped Orlandoans through the tough one that just ended

Even when the cost of living is high and the political landscape in Florida is poor (or depressing), there’s one aspect of Orlando that buckles people in. It’s the sense of community here, and the knowledge that those who advocate for others — especially those who are marginalized or more likely to be left behind — will step up.

At Orlando Weekly , we try to keep an eye out for important efforts by advocates and activists in the Orlando area who lend a helping hand in meaningful ways, with or without government support.

Here are just five examples (not nearly a comprehensive list) of folks doing the good work last year:

SkateBud: Empowering at-risk youth through skating

There’s no one-size-fits-all solution to cut through the trials and tribulations of youth and bring them out on the other side — especially for kids with difficult upbringings. Sometimes more creative, less traditional solutions are needed, particularly in underserved communities. That’s

The Farmworker Association of Florida: Fighting wage theft among agricultural and immigrant workers

Florida is home to the nation’s third-largest workforce, and yet, since 2002, Florida has lacked a state department of labor — because Florida lawmakers and Jeb Bush abolished it. Along with other responsibilities that have since been similarly pushed under the rug, privatized or handed off to federal agencies, that department used to investigate complaints of wage theft among workers. Today, the state Attorney General is the only state official authorized to investigate complaints of minimum wage violations in Florida and enforce Florida’s wage floor, and public records show this largely does not happen. This leaves a patchwork made up of local government-run wage recovery programs and the U.S. Department of Labor’s Wage and Hour Division, which is suffering from near historically low staffing levels (and also isn’t focused only on Florida). They do what they can. To help connect them with some of the state’s most vulnerable workers, including immigrants, the Farmworker Association of Florida in Apopka is one community nonprofit that steps in to fight wage theft. They’ve done this for years, as an organization that actively connects with and empowers mostly-Hispanic and Black workers in the agricultural industry — an industry that’s high-risk for wage and child labor violations.

Peer Support Space: Offering a safe space for people who need a break

Homeless Services Network of Central Florida: Empowering young, formerly homeless young adults to advocate for others

An annual point-in-time count conducted in mid-2024 found that more than 1,200 people in the Central Florida region lacked shelter on a given night. That’s a more than a 100 percent increase from last year, according to the Homeless Services Network, a regional nonprofit that facilitated the count. While the HSN already has established programs to provide temporary and permanent supportive housing to vulnerable folks in our community, this year (thanks largely to funds from the federal government), the nonprofit was able to officially launch a new initiative — Brighter Days — aimed at housing and empowering youth and young adults with lived experience of housing instability. Through the HSN, one of the young adults involved in the new initiative, Yasmine Arencibia, was able to find a temporary, safe place to live after living out of her car. Although she worked as a shift manager at McDonald’s, she wasn’t making enough to make ends meet. She became homeless at 19, and was able to connect with local homeless service resources at 23. Today, she works for AmeriCorps and advocates for other youth and young adults who are either in a similar position to where she was, or at risk of getting there. “I want to be that blessing to somebody. I want to be that hope for somebody that I didn’t have years ago,” she told us in May.

the argument of SkateBud, a nonprofit led by local couple (and California transplants) Tiffany and Zach Moldof that has advocated to improve local skate parks in Orlando and Orange County as a way to uplift at-risk youth. Their campaign, Legalize Wheels, is about empowering youth through skating, which Zach argues can be more accessible and helpful than competitive sports, which pit kids against each other and rely on scoring, wins and losses — unlike skating. Skate Bud’s advocacy-focused programming is multipronged: They provide free skateboards to kids, teach free skating lessons, and offer mentorship for personal and career development. As someone who struggled to find his path in life after a troubled childhood, Zach Moldof recognizes how important a helping hand can be. Earlier this year, they worked with State Rep. Anna Eskamani to request state art and culture funds to help support their programming in the Orlando area. Gov. Ron DeSantis, however, rejected all of state lawmakers’ arts and culture grant requests this year in a surprise move impacting more than 600 arts groups and facilities — including SkateBud.

Let’s face it: It’s been a tough year. Maybe a few tough years, actually. Especially so for LGBTQ+ folks, those of us struggling to make ends meet, or those of us with pre-existing depression, anxiety or other mental health challenges that have been exacerbated by state and federal politics and the material impact of that on our day-to-day lives. Peer Support Space, a local LGBTQ-led nonprofit, was able to realize a long-term goal this year by opening up the region’s first peer respite center, funded in part by the Orange County government as well as private donors. Eva’s Casita is a small residence south of downtown Orlando that offers a comfortable, non-medical setting for people who just need to get away for a few days and regroup. It’s not a hospital or a homeless shelter, but it is staffed with at least one peer specialist, 24/7. It’s meant for consenting adults 18 or over who are struggling with non-urgent mental health challenges. There are more than 40 similar centers across the country, according to founder-director Yasmin Flasterstein, but this is really the first of its kind in Florida, and the first in the nation that is LGBTQ-led. It’s inclusive, no-cost and accessible, with features such as a ramp, a kitchen faucet that can turn on and off with the wave of a hand, and a microwave located at knee level. There may be a waitlist (fair enough), but it’s one example of a local nonprofit making space for those who may be looking for a sign they’re not alone.

Central Florida Jobs With Justice: Organizing to cancel medical debt

Central Florida Jobs With Justice, a coalition of groups connected to a national labor organization affiliate, passionately advocates for a number of issues affecting Central Florida, including climate justice, as well as showing up to picket lines when local workers need a show of support from the community. This year, however, they also prioritized an initiative to leverage a portion of Orange County’s share of federal American Rescue Plan Act dollars to cancel county residents’ medical debt — arguing that doing so would be an important way to help working-class people who, often through no fault of their own, find themselves injured or sick and saddled with debt for simply requiring medical care. Central Florida Jobs With Justice built out a campaign with relevant talking points and empowered local residents and activists to speak in front of the County Commission about why this was an important issue. Ultimately, through connecting county officials with Undue Medical Debt — a nonprofit that’s worked with other municipalities and states across the U.S. on similar initiatives — advocates successfully persuaded county commissioners to use $4.5 million in ARPA funds to eliminate an estimated $424 million in medical debt for more than 150,000 individuals and families in Orange County over the next two years.

ANNA ON A ROLL

Eskamani secures $200K in early fundraising haul for 2027 Orlando mayoral campaign

It’s been less than one month since Florida Rep. Anna Eskamani, D-Orlando, publicly announced her new campaign for Orlando mayor, and already the 34-year-old progressive says she has raised roughly $200,000 in contributions to support her campaign. Eskamani, who was recently reelected to the Florida House, is term-limited from seeking reelection to the Republican-controlled state House in 2026. The next election for mayor (a nonpartisan position) isn’t until 2027.

“To reach this milestone so quickly is extraordinary, and the support of so many Orlandoans deeply moves me,” Eskamani shared in a statement last week. “This campaign is about the

people, and every contribution — big or small — reflects the desire for leadership that prioritizes affordable housing, public transportation, sustainability, community safety, and opportunities for all. Together, we’re building a movement and vision that Orlando can be proud of.”

According to a spreadsheet of campaign contributions reviewed by Orlando Weekly, more than 80 percent of the roughly 360 contributions Eskamani has received so far are small-dollar donations of $100 or less. More than 95 percent are from local residents, Eskamani estimates, including her top contribution of $100,000 from local patent lawyer Brian Anderson. Anderson, who served on Eskamani’s finance team when

she first ran for state office in 2017, has contributed to her campaigns for Florida House before, proving himself a consistent supporter.

“Our campaign reflects the values and aspirations of Orlando’s residents,” said Eskamani, who’s built out a platform highlighting issues such as affordable housing, accountability in local governance and support for small business owners.“I’m inspired by the generosity and energy of our community as we work together to build a city that works for everyone.”

Current Orlando Mayor Buddy Dyer, a former state senator who is not subject to term limits, has served as mayor for more than 20 years, campaigning initially as a progressive during his first bid for office in 2003 before reportedly devolving into what former OW reporter Jeffrey C. Billman described in 2006 as “a business-as-usual pol who prefers to conduct city affairs out of the sunshine.”

Dyer, who nonetheless pulled Orlando through the devastating Pulse nightclub shootings in 2016, has reportedly said he’s not planning to run again. Eskamani told Orlando Weekly it was this declaration — both in meeting with him personally, and from public statements — that helped cement her plan to replace him in 2028.

“It’s a pivotal moment in Orlando’s history and projection,” said Eskamani, an Orlando native, speaking to the likelihood of a shake-up in local leadership.“You want to make sure that you elect someone who’s going to be not just a steady hand when it comes to maintaining city operations and improving city operations, but also someone who’s going to address the real challenges that we face, from housing affordability and homelessness to the challenges small businesses are facing, to our outdated infrastructure to public safety and gun violence prevention.”

Orlando is a fast-growing city in Central Florida of more than 320,000 residents, home to world-famous theme parks like Walt Disney World and Universal Orlando that rely on the labor of everyday working people hustling to get by in our local tourism-centric economy. Eskamani, who comes from a working-class background herself, became the first candidate last month to announce her run for the mayoral seat — and, as of publication, is still the only one to publicly announce their bid. Dyer was last reelected to his sixth term in office in 2023.

Austin’s Coffee smash-and-grab

The break-in comes at a bad time for the Winter Park performing-arts hub

Winter Park caffeine haven and arts hub Austin’s Coffee was the victim of a smash-and-grab last week — during an already uncertain time for the local institution.

According to information shared on social media, the bohemian hub was robbed in the early hours of Wednesday when someone smashed through the glass doors with a brick … to grab some beer. The thieves reportedly

A former Planned Parenthood employee who was first elected to the Florida House in 2018, Eskamani works by day as a state advisor for NEO Philanthropy, a left-leaning social justice nonprofit, representing Florida. Serving as a state representative is technically a part-time job, paying just $29,697 annually.

While still early on in her campaign for mayor, Eskamani has already garnered endorsements from various local, state and federal elected officials, including U.S. Congressman Maxwell Frost, State Sen. Carlos Guillermo Smith, newly elected Orange County School Board member Stephanie Vanos, State Attorney Monique Worrell and Orange County Tax Collector Scott Randolph, among others.

Within days of her campaign announcement, Eskamani also received early endorsements from the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW) Local 606 and the Transport Workers Union Local 570 — an unsurprising move, considering she’s one of the most reliable politicians in the area to show up to a local picket line or workers’ rally.

“It is my honor to inform you that IBEW Local 606 and its membership give you our endorsement and 100% backing in your bid for the seat of Mayor of Orlando,” union leadership for IBEW Local 606 shared with Eskamani in a statement. “Your dedication and service to the residents of Orlando is inspiring. You always have the best interests in mind when you are in Tallahassee fighting to protect the working families of your district. I know that you will continue the same fight as Mayor of Orlando to move the city into the future.”

During her time in the Florida House, Eskamani has been an outspoken advocate for workers’ rights, worked on closing corporate tax loopholes, and earned respect statewide (and beyond) for helping Floridians navigate the state’s broken unemployment system during early COVID-19 pandemic layoffs. She’s also advocated for social and cultural issues such as abortion access and LGBTQ+ equality in a city that leans Democratic.

Orlando’s mayor (and its six city commissioners) are elected for four-year terms. Dyer’s current term in office officially ends Jan. 10, 2028. mschueler@orlandoweekly.com

made off with a few cases of beer, after doing a couple thousand dollars’ worth of damages to the space.

“So you threw a brick in to steal beer?” read a post on Austin’s Coffee’s Instagram account.

“We try so hard to be open for the community, to have a home, and often shake our heads in disbelief. We do not get rich off this business. We barely make ends meet if you even call it that.”

This is all happening against a backdrop of the City of Winter Park purchasing the block on which Austin’s sits, making for an uncertain future for the café, which has been in that space for two decades.

Austin’s currently has a CashApp link up asking for donations to the cost of door repair. news@orlandoweekly.com

Paul Mecurio’s Permission to Speak comes to Orlando — here’s how the one-time lawyer found his way to stand-up

Have you heard the one about the Wall Street lawyer who walked into a bar and ended up with his own Broadway show? That may sound like the setup for an old joke, but the real punchline is Paul Mecurio’s successful second career in comedy, which has seen him win Emmy and Peabody awards for his work on The Daily Show and Stephen Colbert’s Late Show. I recently spoke with Mecurio — whose acclaimed one-man off-Broadway show Permission to Speak returns to Orlando’s Dr. Phillips Center Jan. 18 — about his unconventional path into stand-up.

His early interest in comedy: I remember asking to stay up late to watch the comedians on the late night shows — Carson, Letterman — and then I would go into school and I would do their bits. I would be like Rodney [Dangerfield] in the locker room in high school [and] make funny voices. I was always a cutup; I was voted class clown in my high school, but I had no aspirations to be a comedian.

His first break into show business: In law school, I started to write. I was just studying constantly, but I would lie in bed and write different sketches. I didn’t know what I was going to do with them, but I was just getting these kooky, funny, quirky ideas for comedy [which] led to me making short films. When I was a lawyer, I bought a camera early on and started making films — again, I don’t know why — and I made one and submitted it to a bunch of festivals. It got into the HBO Comedy Festival in Aspen [and] I saw my movie on a big screen. They had a luncheon for the young filmmakers, and I was having lunch with Woody Allen and Albert Brooks and Spike Lee in a rich executive’s mansion in the hills of Aspen … and then I just went back to my life.

His stand-up comedy debut in a Manhattan bar:

I was really nervous; I was cotton-mouthed, and I was really just rushing to get through it. I thought to myself, “If I just keep talking, it won’t look like I’m bombing.” I would probably look back at it now, and just see like a marginally funny five-minute lecture, as opposed to a set of stand-up. But I did get a couple laughs off stuff that I said, and I remember that was sort of like a drug.

Concealing his stand-up career from family and co-workers:

I lied to the people at work; I was doing these M&A [mergers and acquisitions] deals, and I told them my mother was sick so I went to Rhode Island, but I was really at Aspen. … It started to be [this] secret double life that I was leading. I couldn’t tell anybody at the law firm that I was doing this, because they’d be like, “This isn’t appropriate.” I was hiding it from my girlfriend, who is now my wife … [after finding out] she said, “Well, I thought you were having an affair, because you were supposed to be at the office all the time, but there they were nights you’d come home and your suit reeked of beer and cigarette smoke.” That became my life, and it was getting more and more stressful; the two worlds were converging, and I couldn’t keep them apart.

Making audience members the stars of Permission to Speak:

It’s always been weird for me to go on stage and just launch into my act. I will do it, but I like

talking to people, and I have a lot of curiosity. Somebody will say something, and it leads to another question, and then it leads to another question.

I was getting these golden moments: crazy stories, fun, interesting, sometimes serious. The premise of the show is we’re nameless, faceless, divided — especially now, politically — but if we get together and share stories, we realize we have more in common than we think, and maybe we don’t have to be so divisive; maybe we can kind of see each other for who we are as human beings and connect better.

People have said it’s like a fun, giant group therapy session; it’s a nonjudgmental space. … The only people I won’t pick [are] if somebody’s trying too hard to be picked, because then they want to try to take over.

Working with director Frank Oz: Try being directed by Yoda: The guy’s never freaking wrong! [And] he’s a true artist. … He takes everything he does very seriously, and he has an amazing eye. He makes sure that the show is not just about getting laughs every second; he really balanced out the show, and made the focus the humanity, making it about the audience and not just about me.

He feels like there’s some thing that I have that gets people to open up, and he feels very strongly that we need a show like this. There’s a humanity the show that’s really important to him that we not lose.

BEST BITES

The most memorable plates I cleaned last year

Of all the food pieces I write for this fine publication, none burden me with as much agony as cataloging the most remarkable things I’ve eaten in any given year. Paring the list down to just 12 bites is an exercise in selective ruthlessness, mind-flavor remembrance and thumb-swiping endurance (yes, I snap a pic of every dish laid before me).

This past year was an extraordinary one for restaurant openings, and the caliber of dishes plated by Coro, Ômo by Jônt and Smokemade Meats + Eats, to name but a few, really made an impression. So, here they are: a dozen of the most memorable bites I enjoyed in 2024. (See the other 11 photos on our website.)

Gordita at Reyes Mezcaleria

Chef Wendy Lopez made my list last year with her hamachi aguachile, and she makes this year’s list with a dish from her $75 Raiz tasting menu: a gordita fashioned from mushito rojo masa from Michoacan stuffed with lengua, red onion and cabbage. A chunky cataract of salsa rojo washed over the tongue (the gordita’s and my own).

Montanara at Piazza Italia

It takes a skilled pizzaiolo to manipulate Neapolitan pizza dough, but a master to deepfry it, then bake it off in a wood-fired oven to yield a beautifully poofed and crisp cornicione. The fried Neapolitan montanara pizza cements Piazza Italia’s position as the finest pizzeria in Orlando; the pizza margherita and

Temaki at Seito Sushi Baldwin Park

Chef Huy Tin oversees one of the finest restaurants in Orlando at Seito Sushi Baldwin Park, but the temaki he served at this year’s Cows ’n Cabs set the throngs at the annual wine-and-dine walkaround abuzz. Inside the crackly nori wrap was wagyu yukhoe tartare, a doenjang truffle yolk sauce and truffle caviar. They, unsurprisingly, went real fast.

Ribs at Smokemade Meats + Eats

These Black Angus beef ribs are rubbed with a blend of black pepper, salt, garlic and onion powder, smoked for 10 hours in a 1,000-gallon Primitive Pit smoker, and rested for 10 hours before being sliced to order. Needless to say, the resulting charred slab of brontosaurus rates high on the gnaw-ability scale.

Squid at Lamp & Shade

A signature dish from Lamp & Shade’s menu has squid dredged in seasoned flour with squid ink powder before being flash fried for a minute. The result: crisp, beautiful black curls resembling incinerated onion rings — and at our table, they were gone in 60 seconds. They’re chef Ryan Stewart’s favorite dish and they’re one of mine too.

Duck at June

this one with provola cheese are (proofed) proof positive.

Tilefish at Ômo by Jônt

Chef Ryan Ratino cooks with the exacting hand of a surgeon and plates with the artistry of a Renaissance master. We probably stared at this presentation of Nagasaki tilefish crowned with dark Kaluga caviar for a good minute before knifing into a quenelle of koji buttermilk and swirling the fish in onion soubise.

Squab at Sorekara

Many of chef William Shen’s Japanese-leaning dishes at Sorekara veer into French territory, and nothing says French fine dining more than squab. His marinated and seared breast is served along with a squab terrine, squab forcemeat and squab tea. It feels like Titanic fine dining and it’ll go down as one of the year’s best bites.

Lamb at The Acre

Put chefs Jason Campbell and Nick Grecco together and culinary fireworks are bound to happen. The dynamic duo behind culinary ops at Team Market Group borrowed an enormous outdoor cowboy grill from John Rivers and set it up at The Acre for an unforgettable Holy Week cookout. Dangling from that towering ring of fire was a carcass of lamb charred to divine magnificence. It was ultimately chopped up and served with a host of sauces and sides. I can’t wait for them to resurrect this dish.

Chefs Jason Campbell and Nick Grecco once again wowed, this time a with a preview dish from June (the soon-to-open Thornton Park restaurant, not the month): duck burnt ends gleaming with ancho-cola barbecue glaze and crunched with corn-nut furikake. The star of the dish was a pumpkin mole I fell head over heels for (literally).

Snapper at Coro Restaurant

This entire list could be comprised solely of dishes crafted by Tim Lovero and his team at Coro in Audubon Park. Yeah, Coro’s that good. But I selected this citrus-cured snapper and grapefruit served over salsa matcha and garnished with Egyptian star flowers. Gorgeous.

Oxtail at Kaya

I love oxtail, but I’ve never had it the way Lo Lalicon prepares it at Kaya. A braised square of the tender meat sits in a thick “kare-kare” stew fashioned from peanut butter sauce garnished with string beans and breakfast radish. It’s as restorative as it is progressive.

Bihari at Koyla Pakistani BBQ

Plush morsels of marinated eye-of-round grilled over hot red coals is a Sunday-night tradition at this PBBQ pit stop in Kissimmee. The beef’s crusty exterior gives way to a soft, almost creamy texture redolent with garlic, ginger, chilies and treasured family secrets. Suggested pairing: puri paratha, a flaky deep-fried bread rarely seen around Orlando. fkara@orlandoweekly.com

REDLIGHT REDLIGHT

The gastropub is resuscitated inside Redlight Redlight in Audubon Park, thanks to deftly executed and creative comfort dishes plated by chef Jes Tantalo. Even the brunch-averse should pay a visit to the brewpub on Sundays. Dinner served Thursday through Saturday from 5-9 p.m.; Saturday breakfast burritos served from 11 a.m.-2 p.m.; Sunday brunch served from 11 a.m.-2 p.m. Closed Tuesdays. TURCI PASTA

House-made pasta is the calling card of this neighborhood noodle house in Orlando’s Little Italy, aka College Park. Black truffle ravioli, lamb shank pappardelle and ravioli served with a red wine-poached pear are stellar choices. Tableside cannoli and tiramisu affogato are comfort endings. Wine list veers toward pedestrian. Open daily. (reviewed Nov. 27) 2120 Edgewater Drive, 407-985-2577, turcipasta.com, $$

MILLS MARKET

Koyla’s kebab game is strong, particularly its bihari and gola kebabs. COUCHSURFING

Streaming premieres you won’t want to miss this week.

Premieres Wednesday:

Dubai Bling — A trip to Dubai Fashion Week is among the plotlines in Season 3, which promises enough public meltdowns to once again prove that the West holds no monopoly on tacky behavior. We’re just faster at honoring it with its own cryptocurrency, is all. (Netflix)

Fake Profile — It’s Season 2 for the steamy suspense drama about a woman who tumbles into a web of lies and deceit after she’s seduced by a mysterious Colombian. Hey, remember when you had to watch cable to have your night ruined by reminders of Dan Newlin? (Netflix)

Hound’s Hill — A Polish true-crime writer gets more than he bargained for when he returns to his hometown and is forced to confront the skeletons in his closet. If this were Queer Eye, he’d at least get to donate them to Goodwill. (Netflix)

Asura — Hirokazu Kore-eda (Shoplifters) wrote and directed this adaptation of his novel Ashura no Gotoku, in which four sisters begin to suspect their dad has another child with a woman who isn’t their mother. But you know what they say: Gossip can travel halfway around the world before Nick Cannon puts his pants on. (Netflix)

I Am Ilary — Formerly one-half of “Italy’s Beckhams,” newly divorced TV host Ilary Blasi has to learn to live a whole new life. Well, it’s technically not entirely new, since she’s documenting it for reality TV. Entirely new would be a convent. (Netflix)

On Call — The ubiquitous Dick Wolf returns with a half-hour cop show set on the mean streets of … Long Beach. Listen, don’t laugh. People in real cities didn’t think Orlando was tough either until we declared drone war on New Jersey. (Prime Video)

The Pitt — Noah Wyle is back in the ER, headlining a medical drama that follows a hospital team’s 15-hour shift in real time, one hour per episode. That’s if you count Episode Four, which shows the anesthesia unit working for five minutes and then using their out-of-network fees to fund a personal spending spree at Williams-Sonoma. (Max)

The Traitors Season 3 — Another group of “celebrities” tries to fend off betrayal in their pursuit of a quarter-million dollars, with Bob Harper from The Biggest Loser and Bob the Drag Queen from RuPaul’s Drag Race among the possible double agents. If we’re doing Bobs now, my money’s on Iger, because who trusts that dude at this point? (Peacock)

guard. How bad is it? Even the dance routines end in retributive violence. (Netflix)

Get Away — Nick Frost wrote and stars in a horror comedy that follows a British family on vacation to a Swedish island, where they become prime pickings for a demented killer. I think I preferred these package tours when the worst risk was an impromptu limbo contest. (Shudder)

Goosebumps: The Vanishing — This season presents David Schwimmer as a scientist whose family becomes immersed in an insidious evil that’s been bedeviling his Brooklyn neighborhood for decades. It’s called gentrification, Ross. Don’t pretend you’re unfamiliar with the concept. (Disney+)

LOL: Last One Laughing Quebec Season 3 — Ten more French-speaking funny people step up to the challenge of keeping a straight face for six hours. How to send the game into sudden death: breaking out the one about them becoming the 51st state. (Prime Video)

Ski Jumpers — Learn the state of the art of this thrilling sport from Kamil Stoch, Piotr Żyła and other members of the Polish national ski jumping team. In the series’ exciting climax, we learn if they can jump all the way to England before Putin shows up on their doorstep. (Prime Video)

Premieres Saturday:

I Am a Killer — Convicted murderers telling their stories in Season 6 include Leroy Schmitz, who got a 100-year sentence for killing his wife 14 years after he had offed his girlfriend. Whatever else you might hold against the guy, he had clearly conquered his fear of commitment. (Netflix)

Subteran — Hiding from the vicious thugs who murdered her fiancé, a Romanian woman adopts an entirely new name and persona. Unfortunately for her, “Sasha Fierce” was already taken. (Netflix)

Premieres Thursday:

American Primeval — Taylor Kitsch and Betty Gilpin star in a six-episode limited series set in 1857, at the height of westward expansion. And now Taylor Sheridan is kicking himself, because that’s the one year he forgot to copyright. (Netflix)

The Upshaws — This 10-episode run of the Mike Epps/Kim Fields/Wanda Sykes sitcom is being billed as its Part 6, although it’s technically Season 4. The 12-episode Part 7, aka Season 5, will be the show’s last, and I think it’s obvious why: math fatigue. (Netflix)

Premieres Friday:

Ad Vitam — An attempt on his life and the kidnapping of his wife are two signs that retirement is not going to be particularly quiet for a former member of the French national police. And things are really going to heat up if he wins that big prize from Le Clearinghouse des Éditeurs. (Netflix)

Alpha Males 3 — Our quartet of middle-aged Spaniards are back to examine their male privilege, this time by exploring head-scratching phenomena like incel culture. The misogyny they get; what escapes them is the relentless focus on Zack Snyder. (Netflix)

Black Warrant — This sobering drama series lets us view the corruption of the Indian penal system through the eyes of a newbie prison

Sakamoto Days — The “hitman comes out of retirement” trope just might be redeemed by this anime series, which begins with the assassin in question pursuing a quieter life as … the proprietor of a convenience store. Yeah, that’s somebody you don’t want to push by reading the magazines. (Netflix)

Premieres Tuesday: Ari Shaffir: America’s Sweetheart — Taped earlier this year at Capital Turnaround in D.C., the comic’s second Netflix special explores the lighter side of mass shootings, antisemitism and drug addiction. “I thought that was the lighter side.” — Uncle Fester. (Netflix)

Diddy: The Making of a Bad Boy — While you’re waiting for the next set of allegations to drop, brush up on the rags-to-riches-toorange-jumpsuit story of one Sean Combs. Honestly, he seemed like such a nice guy when he was doing benign stuff like singing with Sting and having Tupac murdered. (Peacock)

Single’s Inferno — Season 4 sends another crew of ambitious South Koreans to a deserted island, where they’ll be encouraged to flirt their way out of humble living and into the lap of luxury. But that’s nothing: Have you ever sweet-talked your way into the VIP room at Perkins? (Netflix)

SINCE YOU ASKED

The spellbinding Judy Collins discusses a legendary career ahead of her latest Orlando performance

With a career as extensive and a repertoire about as wide-ranging as it gets, legendary songbird Judy Collins says a passion for music still comes to her naturally.

Collins calls it a basic operation: When she hears something she loves, she is ready to try and learn it.

“Yoko Ono told me a long time ago, she said songs have a life of their own. They know where they want to go. And I think that that’s true,” Collins shares in a phone interview with Orlando

Weekly. “What happens with me is, if I hear a song that I fall in love with, I have to record it, no question. There’s no analysis that goes into this, it’s like falling in love with somebody.”

America’s 1960s folk-music circuit brought a series of powerhouse voices to the forefront of the country both musically and politically. Key figures in this movement — Bob Dylan, Phil Ochs, Joni Mitchell, Joan Baez intertwined storytelling and social activism, inspiring artists to break barriers in their songwriting for

generations to come. Collins was also one of the leading lights of this movement.

Seven decades after her initial rise to fame, the alchemy of live performance continues to call to Collins, who still carries a mix of delicacy and power in her voice with every note.

One of the unique charms of Collins’ catalog is that each record sounds uniquely her own, despite her pulling from a diverse array of genres, from folk standards to rock & roll to musical theater. The latter category includes one of her most popular covers, “Send in the Clowns,” a musical standard that won composer Stephen Sondheim a Grammy for Song of the Year in 1976.

“I’ve worked a lot with Jonathan Tunick, who did the orchestration originally of the song, and he’s worked with me on other things. His orchestrations are very clean and very, very magical, and that’s what he brings to the song,” Collins says. “He used that motif that Sondheim wrote on the piano on the English horn, that’s where the magic started.”

Collins received her own Grammy Award in 1969 for another popular interpretation: Joni Mitchell’s “Both Sides Now.” She’s as prolific a recording artist as they come, releasing a total of 36 studio albums and numerous other live albums and compilation albums across the

years, with multiple certified gold and platinum. (Did we also mention she’s an Academy Awardnominated documentary director, too?)

“I was born into a very musical family. My father had a radio show and he was always singing and practicing and reading and writing, and he’s just an amazing force,” Collins says. “I wrote all during my young years, I played the piano, I played with orchestras, I performed in all kinds of situations. It was very good training for what I do today. I got sucked into the business, really, in a big way. One way or the other, I was going to be doing this for a living.”

Collins’ ability to interweave music and activism, alongside many of her peers in the world of folk music, helped to redefine what popular music could be. A song could be so much more than just a catchy beat and chorus, a song could serve as a protest against injustice.

“It’s so personal. It’s very down to earth, you’re telling stories and people, they have to have some way of processing what it is that they’re going through in their lives in some musical form,” Collins shares. “The folk music field, it’s there to help everybody.”

With each night’s performance, Collins prefers to mix up her setlist. Collins says that she takes about 40 minutes once she first steps into the evening’s venue to open her lyric book and choose what calls to her.

“The more that I can get into the choices, the better off I am. I’ll move into songs I haven’t been singing, things that are new to me or interesting to me or old to me. I always try to make it fresh,” Collins says.

“It’s magic when it happens, and it helps me to be focused. It’s been very interesting. I’ve done six concerts in various parts of the country since my husband died. And this thing that happens on stage is very healing, and at the moment, it’s working on me.”

When asked if her perspective on music has changed over the years, Collins replies that it has not. It’s still easy for her to fall in love with a song, for music to be both a physical and emotional process. Much of what she has learned throughout her career and held close as guidance, Collins shares with us to close out the conversation.

“Work hard, get as much pleasure out of your life as you can. Don’t be judgmental about other people. Sing only what you like. Don’t let anybody else tell you what to do. And hang on to that dream, because you’re the only person that can fulfill your dream. You have the good luck and the fortune to fill up your wishes and your desires, do it the way you want to do it.”

LOCAL RELEASES

After an unbelievably breathless torrent of releases in the early 2020s which included a 2021 run that averaged nearly a full album per month, prolific Orlando act Alien Witch eased off the pedal while main brain Dee Crittenden focused on other projects. But Alien Witch has shown recent signs of new life with several albums released in the past year. On brand-new album Bloodstained Supernova, however, Alien Witch has reemerged with not just robust new material but new sound and perspective.

Although Alien Witch’s shapeshifting music has spanned lots of ground, it’s all been single-mindedly dark. So bleak is the Alien Witch mystique that a pivot toward something like Britpop would seem like a stunning sea change. But don’t get too carried away. Anyone who sees the title Bloodstained Supernova and rushes to Oasis conclusions might be in for a surprise. Without a doubt, though, Crittenden has been absorbing some classic British stuff. While that turn is unexpected for Alien Witch, it’s not foreign territory for Crittenden. Doxy, one of Crittenden’s other bands, has often sported a heavy influence from the Brian Jonestown Massacre, whose own inspirations are very British. Now, on Bloodstained Supernova, Alien Witch sounds like they’re drinking from the same English well.

Indeed, these 13 new songs are modern conjurings of 1960s British psychedelia. While the heavy, narcotic atmosphere here is something you’d expect from Alien Witch, this album isn’t their usual death march. Instead, it’s a trip painted in acid colors far beyond the shades of black that’ve thus far defined their aesthetic. In Alien Witch’s eternally nocturnal realm, it’s a dawning that’s not just stylistic but personal.

“I basically feel better than I have since 2019,” says Crittenden, who’s been working on shedding emotional and chemical toxicity.“The most productive and creative, physically healthy and mentally the strongest I’ve ever felt. Sort of a new lease on life, or maybe I was running out of my nine lives and it was time to get it together. I truly believe this album is a reflection of that.”

Bloodstained Supernova is, in Crittenden’s own words, the “beginning of a new, brighter era.”

More than that, though, it’s a twist that’s not just convincing but some of the most fully crafted material from Crittenden ever. The album now streams everywhere.

CONCERT PICKS THIS WEEK

Punks for a Purpose Vol. 2: Local promoters Montgomery Drive and Pulp Music Festival have teamed up again for this second edition of the activist-minded concert series Punks for

a Purpose. This hard-hitting homegrown lineup includes punk and metal extremity from Thrull, Weak, Trauma Bond, Trash World and Audible Parts. The event will benefit war-ravaged Palestine with proceeds going to Healing Our Homeland, a Palestinian woman-led aid organization based in Gaza. It’s a stacked bill of urgent music for an urgent cause. (7 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 11, Will’s Pub, $10-$15)

Pressure Kitten, Earth Fault, Crash the Funeral, Strangelace: For those who like their music with a little dark theater, this showcase will feed the need. Pressure Kitten specialize in industrial dance-rock done with old-school panache. Earth Fault is the solo darkwave project of Circuit Church head Jared Silvia. Crash the Funeral play punk rock with a horror flair. Strangelace is the solo project of Eva Strangelace (M.A.C.E., Super Passive) that weaves ambient music into a somber and sinister spell. All told, it’s an impressively wide sampler of Orlando’s neo-alternative underground at a very throwback price. (7 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 11, Stardust Video & Coffee, $5)

Compass Trio: A sitar player, a tabla player and a flamenco guitarist walk into a bar. It sounds like the setup for a punchline. Instead, it’s the format for NYC ensemble Compass Trio, and they are no joke. Their complex and entrancing sound surveys the intriguingly complementary intersection of Indian and Spanish music. The three players conjure centuries-old traditions and draw new connections between them to create mesmerizing music that’s at once ancient and progressive. June Henry

It’s a good week for folk music in Orlando. On one hand, you’ve got the legendary Judy Collins playing at the Plaza Live. Then over at Framework, there’s this bill of new, queer voices rejuvenating those same chords. Lawrence, Kansas, singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist June Henry is coming to Florida for a string of dates this week. The young musician’s sound is a ragged tumble of tuneful passion that is as informed by folk-punk as by the dark, introspective home recordings of Lou Barlow. Henry’s lyrics tell tales of queerness, gender dysphoria, love lost and gained, and resistance. Just as notable is the opener for these dates, X-Dirty Fingers. XDF’s Taryn Kody is leaving Florida imminently, so these shows, including Wednesday’s gig at Framework with Marble Berry Seeds, Rumbletramp and I’ve Never Been Here Before, are a last chance to bask in her creativity and bid a fond farewell. 8 p.m., Framework Craft Coffee House, 1201 N. Mills Ave., instagram.com/frameworkcoffeehouse, $15.

FestN4

FestN4, a curated Winter mini-fest festival courtesy the Fringe kicks off this week, featuring more than 20 shows by returning Fringe artists and brand-new creatives. Shows include local productions like “Psych! A Diagnostic Stand-up Therapy Comedy Show” and “Your Mom’s in My Top 8: A Pop-Punk Celebration.” There will also be national shows, including “Furniture Boys” from New York City and “Suff(rage)” from Oxford, Mississippi, as well as international productions such as “Colonial Circus: A Hysterical Show on the History of Colonization” from Ontario. The festival also features offshoot programming like the FestN4 Teaser Show, Fringe AfterDark: WTF(ringe) Cabaret and the FestN4 Awards. Despite the

oft-madcap nature of these shows, there’s going to be a bittersweet undercurrent this year. It’s pretty much the last hurrah of the ArtSpace venue in downtown Orlando, which the Fringe organization is shutting down in the coming weeks, due to a litany of misfortunes fiscal and logistical and an act of G-d. Silent Em

A (different) cold surge from New York is headed this way — again. Last time Bronx bopper Jean Lorenzo brought his synth project Silent EM to Orlando, the dance floor of a pre-demic Stonewall sizzled with electricity for days afterward. Attendees of said show six Septembers ago will recall Lorenzo’s dual command over a serpentine synth rig and a hot mic frozen in its tracks by a sudden chill in the air (not to mention those moves). While his heavenward gestures imbue the live performance with a sense of the sacred, Silent EM’s lyrics are anything but. On his new single, “Institution,” Lorenzo makes it clear he “don’t want you praying for [him]” as his synths stomp and shimmer. Joining Lorenzo live on guitar is St. Pete synth star and longtime collaborator Nic Hamersly (Ortrotasce). Coldwave connoisseurs: Take note of this alignment and witness it in real life. 9 p.m., Iron Cow, 2438 E. Robinson St., instagram.com/_ironcow, $15. — Tyler Barney

Sarah Silverman

The year in comedy is starting off hot for audiences in Central Florida, with legends like Jim Gaffigan and Patton Oswalt having already headlined Orlando stages. She has worked in basically every form of communication, from TV to film to books to the off-Broadway stage. Her eponymous podcast is one of the best in a highly saturated podcast market. The proud Northeastern liberal will have plenty to say to audiences in Florida, much of which may be about Florida itself. It’s hard to believe that she’s been doing this for over 30 years. One can only imagine what the next 30 years will be like. 7 p.m., Hard Rock Live, 6050 Universal Blvd., hardrock.com/orlando, $60.50-$100.50.

The Screwtape Letters

Orlando’s Dr. Phillips Center this week will welcome a production of C.S. Lewis’ 1942 satire The Screwtape Letters. Set in hell, the widely acclaimed story follows senior devil Screwtape’s journey to capture a human soul destined for damnation, told in the form of a series of letters to his nephew and lower-level tempter, Wormwood. And the live adaptation has it all: debaucherous temptation, spiritual warfare, good old-fashioned Christian apologetics and precisely one skin-tight costume. The 90-minute show makes just a single appearance in Orlando on Saturday. Take I-4 straight to hell for this one. 4 p.m., Walt Disney Theater, Walt Disney Center for the Performing Arts, 445 S. Magnolia Ave., drphillipscenter.org, $70-$104. — Chloe Greenberg

Communion

Monthly alt-drag showcase Communion is a uniquely Floridian phenomenon, rooted in the after-effects of being raised in and around Southern Christianity, punk rebellion and the fatalistic

sense of us against the world that can only come from living in a Republican-dominated state. Cohelmed by DJ Pup Rocky and Anesthesia (who will perform a song by Diamanda Galas, and you know times are dark when Ms. Galas raises her vengeful head), the night is a freewheeling tour through subterranean glamour-as-performance art through lenses of horror, punk, metal, purepop, anime and goth. “We gather in Communion to reclaim community from the hateful, bigoted and blasphemous sects of religion that have tried to steal it from the LGBTQ+,” says Anesthesia. Based on attending previous iterations, the bar is particularly high for Sunday. This one-year anniversary celebration features Gex, Davi Oddity, Glit3rrr and an appearance from visiting royalty, Opulence Black (of Black Haus) — which goes a long way toward establishing a cursed lineage. “This show in particular is quite special because this cast is all people I would consider not only the most talented and engaging performers in Orlando, but some of my closest friends,” explains Rocky. “Opulence Black not only gave me my first real booking in Orlando, but has also been there for me as a guide and mentor throughout the years of being a show director.” Blessed be, indeed. 9 p.m., The Dust, 431 E. iScream Sundays: The Dahli

The newer Sunday drag showcase iScream Sundays at Savoy (courtesy of Axel Andrews) pairs creative locals with visiting royalty, and, buddy, do they have a superstar headed the City Beautiful’s way. Phoenix performer The Dahli made their name with a show-stopping run on the horror-drag competition Dragula’s second and fourth seasons and Dragula: Resurrection with looks that mixed intricately detailed horror and rugged glamour. This sweet tank of a dog was found tied to a stop sign by a good Samaritan. Madame Fetchington (A532188) is 4 years old and tips the scales at 81 pounds of solid muscle. She is strong and solid, gentle, calm and even a little bit shy. She is great with other dogs, and can be vocal when she wants attention. She absolutely loves toys, and in our play yards she has played with (and destroyed) the plastic pools, the water bowls, the toy boxes, the spray bottles for cleaning, even the hose. Though she is 4, she has the energy of a puppy when she has a toy in her grasp. She will need additional training and probably a variety of toys made available for her to play with. We think with exercise, patience, plenty of attention and a lot of love, this tough girl will turn into an incredible companion.
