Where to: SOAK UP THE SUN
BY CHLOE GREENBERG
Summer in Orlando is prime time for trying brand-new bars and restaurants, hitting up big annual fests, even checking out the latest theme park updates — but some summer to-dos are classics that true locals look forward to every year: tubing on an actual lazy river, cheering on our soccer clubs, hiking, birding and more. Here are some quintessential Orlando summer activities.
LAKE EOLA PARK
Right in the heart of Orlando is Lake Eola Park, a glistening body of water surrounded by ample space for picnicking, sightseeing and taking a breather just outside of the bustle of downtown. It’s an essential spot for Orlandoans to know — and you get locals-only bonus points for actually riding in the tourist-adored swan boats. (512 E. Washington St.)
WEKIWA SPRINGS
This stunning spring is less than 20 minutes from downtown Orlando, entici9ng locals to escape the city and enjoy all that nature has to offer. The emerald water is perfect to dive into and cool off with friends and family. There’s ample space to have a picnic, making it a top contender for Orlando’s best summer hangout. Wekiwa Springs also has its very own food truck
for those who didn’t pack enough snacks. (1800 Wekiwa Circle, Apopka, 407-553-4383, floridastateparks.org)
INTER & CO STADIUM
Throw on your best purple duds and go to an Orlando Pride or Orlando City soccer game and cheer on our MLS and NWSL players. The Pride, our women’s club, has set attendance records in this soccer-crazed town. MLS season runs February-October; NWSL season runs MarchNovember. ( 655 W. Church St., 407-480-4702, orlandocitysc.com)
WEKIVA ISLAND
Wekiva Island offers some ideal outdoor fun without requiring an entire planned day trip. This Central Florida destination is just under a 30-minute drive from downtown Orlando, and offers plenty of water fun for kids. Rent a kayak or paddleboard, play beach volleyball, or just splash around in the cool, clear waters. (1014 Miami Springs Drive, Longwood, 407-862-1500, wekivaisland.com)
LEU GARDENS
Head to the Harry P. Leu Gardens for a day admiring the greenery and learning about Florida’s natural landscape. Then upgrade your

SPLIT OAK FOREST
You might have guessed from the name, but this forest was named for a centuries-old oak tree that was split down the middle by lightning. Hikers can spot the tree while traveling along nearly eight miles of dusty prairie terrain. This network of trails and unpaved roads also veers into land once used for cattle operations. Now, it’s mostly home to gopher tortoises and birds. (12175 Clapp Simms Duda Road, myfwc.com)

You’ve chosen a very “interesting” time to delve into the live music milieu in Orlando — and we mean that both in the complimentary way and the fortuneteller’s curse way.

That being said, the Kia Center and the Dr. Phillips Center for the Performing Arts’ four rooms are going gangbusters right now. The Kia Center arena to all intents and purposes is busier than ever, with the eclectic likes of Olivia

of Mills Avenue. Uncle Lou’s is an anything-goes spot that hosts both touring and local bands of the very underground variety. Will’s Pub, we trust that even those new in town have heard of by reputation. You owe it to yourself to check out a show there.
What this all means is that a decentralized string of venues are getting a lot more action and attention. Newer venue Conduit in Winter Park is going hard with touring and live acts most nights of the week. The Abbey is a reliable room for touring acts from Speed to My Life With the Thrill Kill Kult. Even Vanguard is hosting more live shows — two notable ones of late were Death Grips and Pharcyde — alongside their full calendar of DJs and producers. The Plaza Live in the Milk District is back in action this year after a remodel, providing a home for K-pop bands, veteran rockers and younger acts like Alvvays. A bit further afield in Sanford, West End Trading Co. keeps things loud and anything-goes with punk and rock gigs aplenty, while Tuffy’s Music Box keeps it rootsy and raucous most nights. Both are touring destinations in their own rights.
Disturbed and Gunna all playing there recently. (Worth a quick mention also is that Camping World Stadium is becoming a destination of choice for the legendary likes of the Rolling Stones.)
The Dr. Phillips Center, meanwhile, this year opened a fourth venue, the supper-club style Judson’s Live, that regularly hosts jazz residencies, much-loved locals and touring indie rockers alike. And if you like what Judson’s is doing, give a follow to Timucua Arts Foundation and (the currently nomadic) Blue Bamboo Center, both giving spotlight to adventurous jazz and creative music.
Since we’re talking change, Mills 50 too is in such a fast-forward gentrification mode that you might want to breathe deeply of the last vapors of sweat and well liquor from notable and longlived venues like Will’s Pub, Uncle Lou’s and Grumpy’s Underground Lounge while the getting’s good. We’re not saying they’re going anywhere, but change is in the air on that strip

For bigger acts, business is definitely picking up at Addition Financial Arena near UCF. The arena will this year host shows from Kevin Gates, Parker McCollum and our next President, Sexyy Red. The Orlando Amphitheater, part of the Central Fairgrounds Complex on Colonial Drive, is one to keep an eye on as they host everything from the Forbidden Kingdom bass festival to Lamb of God to the indie-riffic Mother Mother and Cavetown double bill. DIY and DIY-adjacent venues are constantly coming and going in the City Beautiful, same as all around the country. Stardust Video in Audubon Park is a consistent destination for young locals getting their respective sounds down, as well as truly freaky and freaked-out touring acts. Castle Smoke in Casselberry and the S.P.O.T. on East Colonial are newer havens for the young generation of Orlando musical outsiders: From metal to rave to hardcore to indie to noise, you’re going to hear and see what’s next there.

Where to: RAISE A GLASS
BY MATTHEW MOYER AND CHLOE GREENBERG
Are you finding your move to Orlando a little more daunting than getting out of the U-Haul and jumping straight into a IRL chorus of “It’s a Small World” at the Magic
Kingdom? Do you need a lil’ drink? Well, no worries! Orlando has you covered with spirits on all ends of the spectrum — strength and cost and relative fanciness.
COCKTAILS
There’s all manner of creative and fancy quaffs awaiting you to belly up to the bar. Otto’s High Dive, an elevated spin on the “neighborhood rum bar,” is alive with the din of tipplers who gather in the lush, design-forward space to down daiquiris, mojitos and Cuba libres. The Guesthouse has been a Mills 50 favorite since opening, with a creative cocktail menu, intimate low-lit interiors and a bathroom made for ye olde selfie — sister bar Sunroom goes for sunnier vibes and more tiki-esque flavors. A great pairing. One of the first to kickstart the craft-cocktail movement in Orlando, the Courtesy is a don’t-miss on any true connoisseur’s bar hop. In addition to the delicious drinks, the vibe is sophisticated without being stuffy. And Mathers Social Gathering (several times voted Orlando’s best downtown bar and best cocktail by our readers) will take you back in time with its speakeasy atmosphere. There’s kitschy cocktails, sure, but also a swinging blue velvet couch, dueling pianos, bustling burlesque nights and even a resident poet.
DIVE BARS
Depending on the relative quality of your day, sometimes a fancy drink doesn’t hit. Sometimes you need a stiff, unfussy drink in a place where the beautiful people take a deep breath before they cross the threshold. To that end, make a beeline to Whiskey Lou’s: ridiculously strong pours, wood paneling on the walls and Blues Brothers statues. Over in Winter Park, Spatz is a fave with plenty of space (the mazelike bar seems to stretch on forever), an outdoor patio, pool tables and strong drinks. Over in Thornton Park, Burton’s is another essential stop with friendly crowds, stiff beverages, pool tables and a raucous front patio.
NEIGHBORHOOD FAVES
No matter where you’ve ended up settling, there’s always a comfy watering hole nearby favored by your neighbors. Here’s a grab bag of can’t-miss spots. Ivanhoe’s Hammered Lamb has been pleasing Orlandoans with over-the-top brunch dishes, Bloody Marys and drag events
on their pleasant patio for more than a decade. Thornton Park’s Falcon features craft beer and wine along with art shows, live music, drag shows, an open mic and perhaps an imperious cat holding court at the bar. Near Lake Eola, the Stubborn Mule boasts contemporary American food, and is a popular brunch spot in the area.
MIXING IT UP
There’s nothing inherently wrong with the current local trend of upscale cocktail program mixed with creative small plates, but the field is about to get a bit crowded. But for now, here are some of the highlights. Tori Tori changed the game with libations and shying away from the “restaurant” classification, even though they serve some of the best Japanese grub in town. The nearby Moderne brings the creative verve with vibes, quaffs and small plates on a constantly rotating menu. Newcomer Mid Drive Dive impresses with mid-century aesthetics and a cocktail and food menu to match (though there’s always a pleasing twist or two).
A LITTLE SOMETHING DIFFERENT
And then there are those Orlando bars that are difficult to classify, but vital to our drinking scene. Proper, a “vinyl listening room” and bar, opened in downtown Orlando last year as an audiophile haven for folks who want to listen to some records while sipping on a quality beverage. Also fairly new is High T, a trippedout ode to Alice in Wonderland in every way possible, from cocktails with evocative names such as “Maybe I’m Dreaming” and “Travel by Hat” to over-the-top decor. This spot is really a trip down the rabbit hole. Bewitching downtown spot Cocktails and Screams serves crafty cocktails with a hefty dose of horror, plenty of themed nights, drag shows and a secret (oops!) witchy speakeasy, The Craft. Maybe the most “different” choice of all is a cocktail bar with no alcohol — Ivanhoe Village’s Bandbox, which aims to provide an intimate, spirit-free speakeasy atmosphere for everyone, even those who prefer a mocktail.

DeSantis uses ‘sexual festival’ Orlando Fringe as scapegoat to veto all arts funding in the 2024-2025 budget — $32 million in grants to museums, orchestras, zoos and more down the drain in his quest to exterminate drag
This week, I’d hoped to be able to delve into some of the new offerings debuting in our local theme parks this summer, such as the spectacular CineSational fountain-and-drone show at Universal Studios Florida. Unfortunately, my plans were derailed when Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis was asked at a recent press conference why he made the unprecedented move of vetoing Florida’s entire $32 million budget for arts grants, which had already been vetted and approved by his Republican-dominated Legislature. His response was that he cut the desperately needing funding — which supports nonprofit museums, zoos, orchestras and more — because some of it was “being given in grants to things like the Fringe Festival, which is like a sexual festival where they’re doing all this stuff.”
That bombshell accusation elicited outrage from the staff and supporters of the Orlando International Fringe Theatre Festival, which is the largest and longest-running event of its kind in the United States, as well as its smaller fellow festivals in Tampa and Sarasota.
“What DeSantis said about the Fringe Festival undermines the valuable work done by Orlando Fringe and the more than 200 other Fringe festivals worldwide,” says Orlando Fringe Festival producer Tempestt Halstead. “It’s clear he has never attended the Orlando Fringe or the three other Fringe festivals rooted in Florida. His mischaracterization damages our reputation as a whole. Without a valid reason to veto all arts funding, he used Fringe as a scapegoat, which is both unjust and absurd.”
The local arts community’s rancorous reaction to this reactionary abuse of power was hardly unexpected, but I don’t imagine DeSantis anticipated that his action would attract attention around the globe, not only from Fringe’s expected defenders, but from a diverse range of mass-market media outlets that had never paid any attention to the Fringe Festival before.
In a statement, the Canadian Association of Fringe Festivals, which represents 32 festivals across North America, called on “leaders and policymakers to recognize the indispensable value of the arts and to support and invest in these vital cultural institutions. … The recent veto of arts funding in Florida, accompanied by statements that mischaracterize our events, deeply concerns us. … To our friends and colleagues in Florida: We stand with you. Your work is invaluable, and your voices matter. Together, we will continue to champion the arts and ensure that Fringe festivals remain a vibrant and essential part of our global cultural landscape.”
Daily Beast reporter Josh Fiallo declared the veto a “dick move,” observing that while DeSantis claimed the cuts were because “I can’t sell the Fringe Festival to taxpayers, nor would I want to try to sell the Fringe Festival to taxpayers,” the governor doesn’t have an issue justifying “spending more than a million in taxpayer dollars to fly migrants from Texas to Martha’s Vineyard for a political stunt.”
Even pastor Mark Wingfield of the faith-based Baptist News Global decried the veto as “an exercise in authoritarian power [and] the next iteration of book banning,” opining that the root cause was “DeSantis’ unhealthy obsession with drag performers,” who made up a tiny fraction of the last Fringe festival’s 170-show lineup.
In fact, the biggest irony of this whole debacle is that 2024’s festival was one of the least sexually explicit in memory, with zero full-frontal nudity (or even bare nipples) in any of the
shows I saw. Even if there was objectionable material in some of the adult-only shows, those artists don’t directly receive any of the meager dollars Fringe had applied for, which go toward operational support.
Ultimately, DeSantis’ self-defeating temper tantrum is less about saving taxpayers a minuscule sliver of the state’s $116.5 billion budget than about punishing the arts community that opposed his quixotic culture-war campaigns against drag queens and Walt Disney World.
That brings us full circle to the theme parks, which are not only the cornerstone of Central Florida’s tax base, but the state’s only real export now that citrus farming is nearly extinct.
Parks like Universal and Disney wouldn’t be able to charge their exorbitant ticket prices without world-class entertainment taking up the slack for their often-overloaded rides, and they wouldn’t make ever-increasing profits if talented performers weren’t willing to work in suboptimal conditions for substandard wages.
Orlando Fringe and other grassroots arts organizations are a huge reason why many of those artists stay in Orlando, instead of seeking employment elsewhere. Not only that, but Fringe and its fellows have served as vital training grounds for some of the writers, directors and designers of those very productions that said parks are relying on to attract visitors this summer.
I have a modest proposal for anyone working behind the scenes who got their start in Orlando’s independent theater scene and now has the ear of C-suite executives: Go ask your bosses to cut a donation check directly to each and every arts group that was denied funding. The total cost would be a rounding error on these billion-dollar corporations’ balance sheets, and would help preserve the creative pipeline that generates Orlando’s magic for the next generation. skubersky@orlandoweekly.com

FOR THE SAKE OF SAKE
Bar Kada in Winter Park gets serious about rice wine, but its dishes are equally consequential
BY FAIYAZ KARA
Over the past five years or so, Michael Collantes has thrown numerous concepts at the proverbial wall to see what sticks. Taglish, his Filipino fast-casual eatery, slid off in 2022. Perla’s Pizza went splat after six months, but Collantes will fling it once again this fall. Sushi Saint’s concept and pricing are still being tinkered with, while Soseki — the crown jewel in Collantes’ budding restaurant empire — is an omakase house in a sea of omakase houses. But Bar Kada, a sake and small-plate lounge, is arguably the stickiest. While it’s glued to Soseki’s couture hips, the moody, unfenestrated den of drinks and delectables is so unaffectedly chill, it’s hard to resist lingering. Especially at the bar, where bottles of sake are presented with a healthy dose of rice wine education courtesy of sommelier Benjamin Coutts and his head sake sidekick, Daniel Lugo.
The pair can talk your ears off about every facet of sake production, from rice varieties and polishing ratios to koji mold strains and filtration. They have such a spirited zeal for rice wine that you can’t help but get caught up in the swell of their excitement. Needless to say, I’ve sampled a broad spectrum of Bar Kada’s best in the form of flights ranging in price from $40 to $75. Maybe even too broad. So it’s a good
thing Collantes has chef Mike Vang to plate some equally notable Japanese-leaning dishes to go along with those prized quaffs. Even better is that the global flavors Vang incorporates into his cooking never feel derivative. Beyond the addictive nibbles of complimentary za’atar-spiced chickpeas, a bar-side pour of “leche de tigre” made from condensed milk and Thai chilies into a sashimi plate of kanpachi ($18) with daikon and basil is a crowd-pleaser — so much so that drinking the liquid from the plate is a common sight. (I’ve done it twice.)
On one visit, my companion, who won the burden of my company in a fundraising auction by Ricky Ly of Tastychomps for World Central Kitchen following the massacre of their aid workers by Israeli Defense Forces, was all but ready to lick the ponzu beurre blanc coating a plate of maitake mushrooms ($12). She just had a lot more decorum than me. That said, there may have been some licking of the curried sauce with Thai chili, lemongrass and cilantro adorning the mussels ($16).
What you’ll eventually come to notice, as we did, is how the menu reflects Vang’s Vietnamese heritage. The handsome presentation of wagyu tartare ($23), for example, is his play on bò lúc lác, or Vietnamese shaking beef.
Pickled diced cauliflower circling an egg yolk atop sesame-flecked Aussie beef is as appetizing as it looks. Vang sides it with wagyu tendon chicharrones and sourdough bread from Olde Hearth. Japanese A5 wagyu is also offered, and if you indulge in the Kagoshima ribeye ($50 for 2 ounces) glossed in black garlic butter with fried shallots, it won’t disappoint. Honestly, nothing on the menu will, and that includes less razzle-dazzle items like salt and vinegar chips ($12) served with a dip made from purple murasaki sweet potatoes embellished with chopped eggs from Lé Koopé in Clermont, or chicken wings ($15) in a Vietnamese preparation of fish sauce caramel or Korean gochujang. If faced with a choice, however, I’d pass on them in favor of superb mandu-like dumplings ($19) of corn, pea, ginger and scallion graced with chili crisp and radish sprouts, or slivers of pepper-rubbed bluefin akami ($19) decorated with wee curls of pickled cucumber and grated daikon topped with tapenade. The tuna, BTW, swims in a liberal pour of ponzu. Speaking of, Lugo was kind enough to liberally pour Momotose’s 30-year aged sake to enjoy with a capper. Sipping on the ruby-hued dessert wine along with a “pudding” ($8) of toasted coconut, peaches, mango, white chocolate ganache and crackles of lime zest meringue proved highly enjoyable. It made parting with the linger-worthy lounge such sweet sorrow. fkara@orlandoweekly.com
OPENINGS & CLOSINGS:
Palm Beach Meats, Florida’s top purveyor of Japanese wagyu, will open a second location, taking over the old Hungry Pants space at 3421 S. Orange Ave. in SoDo. Owners Eric San Pedro and wife Meghan are the only ones in the country authorized by the Kobe Association to provide the prized wagyu as a retailer, restaurant and wholesaler. Like the Palm Beach original, the Orlando outpost will sell Japanese beef and o er a food menu with some “twists.” Look for it to open later this year … The Parkview in Winter Park has closed. Moving into the space will be a revived version of The Imperial Winter Park, John Washburn’s bar and lounge that stood for five years at 170 E. Morse Blvd. before closing last October. Washburn, along with business partner Drew Weisner, who also served as the executive chef of Dexter’s Thornton Park, will develop the menu once a hood system is installed in the space. Washburn says he’d like to open in time for Winter Park’s Autumn Art Festival … Pizza Bruno is aiming to open its newest location inside the Maitland Social this week. The pizzeria at 360 E. Horatio Ave. will serve neo-Neapolitan pies of the sort fired up at the original Curry Ford location, not the Jersey-style pies served at Pizza Bruno College Park … Tampa-based Acropolis Greek Taverna will move into the former DoveCote Restaurant space on the ground floor of the City National Bank of Orlando building (formerly the Bank of America building) at 390 N. Orange Ave. Co-owner Mike Mikula says he’s aiming for a September/October opening … Look for Jeremiah’s Italian Ice to open in the old Pop Parlour space at 431 E. Central Blvd. near Lake Eola … Poke joint Pokemoto has opened in Celebration at 1629 Future Way … Another Mexican joint, Black Rooster Taqueria, has closed its Curry Ford Road location less than three years after opening. Owner Juliana Calloway cited numerous reasons for the closure, “business levels” being one of them. The original Mills Ave. location, however, continues to thrive … The MetroWest outpost of Izziban Sushi & BBQ has closed, but moving in will be Annie’s Island Breeze Restaurant & Lounge, from the same owner as Annie’s Roti Shop.

Melrose Pop Festival gathers a gang of heady locals to rip it live at the Orlando Public Library
BY GRAYSON KEGLOVIC
There’s so much more to check out than merely books this summer at the Orlando Public Library. For the second summer in a row, the downtown library will be the site of a free music festival.
The Melrose Pop Festival returns Sunday to the library’s Melrose Center. What started as a one-off event to celebrate the library’s 100th birthday has turned into an annual celebration of local music.
“We drew about 300 people to the festival last summer,”says the Melrose Center’s Jim Myers.“The idea started actually during the show. I remember Beth McKee mentioning, ‘Hey, should we do this every year with different artists?’ and the library was really pleased with the event and idea.”
Myers said that the Melrose Pop Festival, named as an homage to the seminal 1967 Monterey Pop Festival — an event that featured Jimi Hendrix, the Who and the Byrds — is already emerging as one of the library’s signature events despite this only being its second year.
This year, the Melrose Pop Festival showcases five Orlando-native musicians during the threeand-a-half-hour event.
From 1:30 p.m. to 5 p.m., performances from festival headliner Terri Binion, Mugs & Pockets, the Tremolords, Amy Robbins in a Sidecar and Universal Funk Orchestra will ring throughout the bookshelves, workstations and study areas on the second floor.
“I’m looking forward to sharing the stage with
my friend Amy Robbins and her band,” Orlando alt-folk bard Binion tells OW. “The Tremolords are always fun and I’m looking forward to seeing both Mugs & Pockets and the Universal Funk Band live for the first time. So it’s just going to be fun to see everyone and just vibe on our community of musicians. “
Myers, who is also a local musician and Pop Festival alum with Milk Carton Superstars, says that this year’s lineup does right by both the library and the Orlando creative community.
“I think what’s really cool about the bill is I really tried to assemble a very good Orlando representation while being eclectic at the same time,” says Myers.“I’m really proud of what we’ve been able to pull off and I’m always very, very proud of the staff and Melrose Center instructors that make the show go.”
If you’re looking to get a better idea of what exactly a music festival in a library looks like, the Melrose Center recently released Melrose Pop Festival — A Concert Film on its YouTube channel. And it’s definitely worth a pregaming view. Whether you’re an avid reader, library devotee or local music lover — or if you’re all three — the Orlando Public Library’s Melrose Pop Festival is a must-see event. The day will also serve as a great entree into the Melrose Center and all of its innovative programming, along with the services, training and tech the Center makes available to

library patrons — including a video production studio, photo studio, fabrication lab and audio production studio.
“I’ve seen that these innovative centers have been added to libraries all over the country and around the world in addition to, of course, new technologies to enhance the overall experience,” reflects Binion, herself a vet of the Melrose in the Mix collab with Central Florida Public Media.“It’s great that our central library is forward-thinking and bringing hands-on opportunities for our community, especially for young people who may find it a helpful and hopeful springboard of inspiration as they navigate a meaningful career for themselves.”
And we would be remiss if we didn’t mention that there will be no shushing on Sunday. music@orlandoweekly.com

LOCAL RELEASES
With searing heat and velocity, young Orlando hardcore band Watts have been one of the most meteoric forces to rise in the area over the past year. Their following is sizable, rabid and snowballing. With only a couple of singles to their name so far, that red-hot street cred is built almost entirely on their live shows, which are volcanic affairs that incite some of the most extreme pits around. Now get ready, punks, because Watts just dropped their first ever collection and it lands like a grenade.
With the brand-new six-song Retribution EP, Watts — the quartet of vocalist Brielle Bennett, bassist Chrissy McKeever, drummer Dakotah Walker and guitarist Nickolai Rushka — are notching a lot of firsts. It’s the band’s debut suite and features some of the very first songs they wrote. It also marks the first project that Walker recorded and mixed.
To Walker’s credit, the record takes an approach that eschews arty indulgence for a directness that’s unvarnished and head-on. By keeping the sound clean in a way that’s more naked than polished, Watts’ brutality hits with
most chiseled look to date. With pure muscle and unhinged mania, it packs all the requisite toughness to feed the hardcore need but roars with an intensity that’s refreshingly free of the male edge that’s so institutional to the genre. It’s an exhilarating snapshot of a band who are a beacon of punk’s future and whose time is now. Retribution now streams everywhere, but no recording can ever capture the physical insanity of a Watts show. So this week at Will’s Pub, go get the full experience when Montgomery Drive and The Coop present Watts’ release show, also featuring Baltimore’s Gasket and Jacksonville’s Flask. (8 p.m. Monday, July 8, $15).
CONCERT PICKS THIS WEEK
Bodybox, Restrictor Plate, Chain Gang:
For those who like their headbanging scattered, smothered and covered, here’s a heaping sampler of trailer-park metal. That’s not me being condescending — just ask Orlando headliner Bodybox, whose frenzied, drug-obsessed death metal comes in titles like “Doublewide Stomp,” “Angeldust” and “Resin Scraper.”
As for Virginia’s Restrictor Plate, well, let’s see: They’re a death-grind band named after a racecar part and their music is self-described as “NASCORE.” In the event those clues were too subtle for you, songs like “Slamtona” and “Earnhardt Stomp” should complete the picture. Finally, Florida’s Chain Gang specialize in the kind of tough-guy beatdown sound that’s custom-built for cage fighters to enter the ring. Oh yes, maximum ass will be kicked. (6 p.m. Saturday, July 6, The Social, $15)
Get ready, punks, because Watts just dropped their first ever collection and it lands like a grenade. Retribution is a riot of nasty guitars, bludgeoning beats and feral vocals
full force and legibility. While dirtier, their first two singles (2023’s “Hard Hitter” and “Choke”) aren’t as visceral as anything here. Retribution doesn’t just rip hard, it does it with swashbuckling brinkmanship. It’s a riot of nasty guitars, bludgeoning beats and feral vocals. Without question, the Retribution EP is Watts’
slchld: I recently wrote a column about the new Asian dimensionality that Australian hardcore band Speed represents. Then new Korean-Canadian artist slchild slides into town to remind us that the Asian persuasion also extends down the velvet halls of R&B. No, this isn’t manufactured K-pop cheese. This is a supremely chill clinic in pure silk and soul, and slchld will lay it down like a natural-born lover. (6:30 p.m. Tuesday, July 9, The Social, $27.50-$150)
Rest Ashore, Better Place, The Real You, The Synthetics: With all the shit-for-brains national discourse happening right now, these MAGA motherfuckers are making everyone else also want to roll the clocks back to a better, though decidedly different, time. Well, this bill will take you to a kinder, gentler indie scene. With their combination of melodic emo heart and math angles, New York’s Rest Ashore are an indie-rock twofer straight out of the 1990s. Orlando’s Better Place and Gainesville’s The Real You also revive classic emo vibes. Although decidedly not emo, Orlando’s The Synthetics — who just released a good debut collection titled Glimpses of Heaven – go further back into the bleakly romantic post-punk of the 1980s. Let’s make America sensitive again. (8 p.m. Wednesday, July 10, Will’s Pub, $10) baolehuu@orlandoweekly.com

This holiday weekend, the Dr. Phillips Center is letting the upright bass set the pace. Jazz bassist and singer Casey Abrams will perform five shows in three days at the Center’s new, intimate Judson’s Live venue. Abrams initially came to fame in 2011 when he placed sixth in the tenth season of American Idol, and since then he has also performed and recorded with jazz cover group Postmodern Jukebox. Judson’s Live will offer charcuterie, small plates and cocktails to

Jhené Aiko
SATURDAY, JULY 6
Jhené Aiko hits Orlando this Saturday on her “Magic Hour” tour with openers Coi Leray, Tink, Umi and Kiana Lede, and this femme-forward show is bound to be a trip. Aiko originally planned the Magic Hour trek in 2020 after releasing her album Chilomb, but the COVID-19 pandemic put the brakes on that. In the meantime Aiko was far from idle, even releasing an R&B album for babies to sleep to, Sleep Soul, after giving birth to her second child in 2022. Aside from some festival appearances, this is Aiko’s first headlining tour in more than four years. Aiko started out as a member of R&B outfit B2K in 2002, but now she makes her own brand of soul music suffused with elements of spirituality, netting her six Grammy nominations. The spiritual artist taps into her inner self live with elements of stagecraft that are symbolic and energy-related, including lights representing a colorful aura and a giant white flower opening up during the show. 6 p.m., Kia Center, 400 W. Church St., kiacenter.com, $115. — HE
SATURDAY, JULY 6
No Gods, No Masterpieces
The tandem of Cassidy Jones and Daniel Harris Mendoza might be better known to local margin-dwellers as two-thirds of cyber-thrashers C0mputer [or maybe that’s just our bias show-
ing], but they’re also each gifted and outsidethe-lines visual artists. No Gods, No Masterpieces is their joint show opening this weekend at Stardust Video, boasting new collages and paintings from Jones and Mendoza. Their work is stunning and mordantly funny and thought-provoking all at once; these are visual pieces that chronicle the collapse of society under out-ofcontrol capitalism, and how sometimes brief fragments of beauty and joy can be found under the bottom lines and outside he profit margins. “Why not abandon the notion of masterpieces? What happens when we stop striving to create the next masterpiece and simply strive to make art?” shared the two in a statement sent to Orlando Weekly. “We become ungovernable, we become un-curatable — and we think that is beautiful.” 6 p.m., Stardust Video and Coffee, 1842 E. Winter Park Road, stardustvideoandcoffee.wordpress.com, free. — MM
MONDAY, JULY 8
Ken Carson
Karl Marx once proclaimed that “religion is the opium of the masses.” Twenty-four-year old Atlanta rapper Ken Carson, meanwhile, is bringing his Opium record label roster to the masses in the form of his “A Great Chaos” tour. The “Fighting My Demons” rapper, whose relationship with Orlando includes being arrested outside the Grand Bohemian Hotel in 2021 and performing with fellow Opium artist Destroy Lonely in 2022, is kicking off his tour at the Orlando Amphitheater on Monday. Fans still waiting on Playboi Carti’s MUSIC album and disappointed in their scrapped “Antagonist” tour will certainly vamp together like it’s prime Project X time all over again. 7 p.m., Orlando Amphitheater, 4603 W. Colonial Drive, orlandoamphitheater.com, $49.50. — Kurt Ramos

DRAWN BY KIERAN CASTAÑO
BY ROB BREZSNY
CANCER (June 21-July 22): The Fates have authorized me to authorize you to be bold and spunky. You have permission to initiate gutsy experiments and to dare challenging feats. Luck and grace will be on your side as you consider adventures you’ve long wished you had the nerve to entertain. Don’t do anything risky or foolish, of course. Avoid acting like you’re entitled to grab rewards you have not yet earned. But don’t be self-consciously cautious or timid, either. Proceed as if help and resources will arrive through the magic of your audacity. Assume you will be able to summon more confidence than usual.
LEO (July 23-Aug. 22): All of us, including me, have aspects of our lives that are stale or unkempt, even decaying. What would you say is the most worn-out thing about you? Are there parts of your psyche or environment that would benefit from a surge of clean-up and revival? The coming weeks will be an excellent time to attend to these matters. You are likely to attract extra help and inspiration as you make your world brighter and livelier. The first rule of the purgation and rejuvenation process: Have fun!
VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22): On those rare occasions when I buy furniture from online stores, I try hard to find sources that will send me the stu already assembled. I hate spending the time to put together jumbles of wood and metal. More importantly, I am inept at doing so. In alignment with astrological omens, I recommend you take my approach in regard to every situation in your life during the coming weeks. Your operative metaphor should be this: Whatever you want or need, get it already fully assembled.
LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22): When Adragon De Mello was born under the sign of Libra in 1976, his father had big plans for him. Dad wanted him to get a doctorate in physics by age 12, garner a Nobel Prize by 16, get elected President of the United States by 26, and then become head of a world government by 30. I’d love for you to fantasize about big, unruly dreams like that in the coming weeks — although with less egotism and more amusement and adventurousness. Give yourself a license to play with amazing scenarios that inspire you to enlarge your understanding of your own destiny. Provide your future with a dose of healing wildness.
SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21): “Your horoscopes are too complicated,” a reader named Estelle wrote to me recently. “You give us too many ideas. Your language is too fancy. I just want simple advice in plain words.” I wrote back to tell her that if I did what she asked, I wouldn’t
be myself. “Plenty of other astrologers out there can meet your needs,” I concluded. As for you, dear Scorpio, I think you will especially benefit from influences like me in the coming weeks — people who appreciate nuance and subtlety, who love the poetry of life, who eschew clichés and conventional wisdom, who can nurture your rich, spicy, complicated soul.
SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21): The coming weeks will be prime time for you to reimagine the history of your destiny. How might you do that? In your imagination, revisit important events from the past and reinterpret them using the new wisdom you’ve gained since they happened. If possible, perform any atonement, adjustment or intervention that will transform the meaning of what happened once upon a time. Give the story of your life a fresh title. Rename the chapters. Look at old photos and videos and describe to yourself what you know now about those people and situations that you didn’t know back then. Are there key events from the old days that you have repressed or ignored? Raise them up into the light of consciousness.
CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19): In 1972, before the internet existed, Capricorn actor Anthony Hopkins spent a day visiting London bookstores in search of a certain tome: The Girl From Petrovka. Unable to locate a copy, he decided to head home. On the way, he sat on a random bench, where he found the original manuscript of The Girl From Petrovka It had been stolen from the book’s author, George Feifer, and abandoned there by the thief. I predict an almost equally unlikely or roundabout discovery or revelation for you in the coming days. Prediction: You may not unearth what you’re looking for in an obvious place, but you will ultimately unearth it.
AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18): Aquarius-born Desmond Doss (1919–2006) joined the American army at the beginning of World War II. But because of his religious beliefs, he refused to use weapons. He became a medic who accompanied troops to Guam and the Philippines. During the next few years, he won three medals of honor, which are usually given solely to armed combatants. His bravest act came in 1944, when he saved the lives of 70 wounded soldiers during a battle. I propose we make him your inspirational role model for the coming weeks, Aquarius. In his spirit, I invite you to blend valor and peacemaking. Synergize compassion and fierce courage. Mix a knack for poise and healing with a quest for adventure.
PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20): What types of people are you most attracted to, Pisces? Not just
those you find most romantically and sexually appealing, but also those with whom a vibrant alliance is most gracefully created. And those you’re inclined to seek out for collaborative work and play. This knowledge is valuable information to have; it helps you gravitate toward relationships that are healthy for you. Now and then, though, it’s wise to experiment with connections and influences that aren’t obviously natural — to move outside your usual set of expectations and engage with characters you can’t immediately categorize. I suspect the coming weeks will be one of those times.
ARIES (March 21-April 19): The “nirvana fallacy” is the belief that because something is less than utterly perfect, it is gravely defective or even irredeemably broken. Wikipedia says, “The nirvana fallacy compares actual things with unrealistic, idealized alternatives.” Most of us are susceptible to this flawed approach to dealing with the messiness of human existence. But it’s especially important that you avoid such thinking in the coming weeks. To inspire you to find excellence and value in the midst of untidy jumbles and rumpled complexities, I recommend you have fun with the Japanese concept of wabi-sabi. It prizes and praises the soulful beauty found in things that are irregular, incomplete and imperfect.
TAURUS (April 20-May 20): You are coming to a fork in the road — a crux where two paths diverge. What should you do? Author Marie Forleo says, “When it comes to forks in the road, your heart always knows the answer, not your mind.” Here’s my corollary: Choose the path that will best nourish your soul’s desires. Now here’s your homework, Taurus: Contact your Future Self in a dream or meditation and ask that beautiful genius to provide you with a message and a sign. Plus, invite them to give you a wink with either the left eye or right eye.
GEMINI (May 21-June 20): Last year, you sent out a clear message to life requesting help and support. It didn’t get the response you wished for. You felt sad. But now I have good news. One or both of the following may soon occur. No. 1: Your original message will finally lead to a response that buoys your soul. No. 2: You will send out a new message similar to the one in 2023, and this time you will get a response that makes you feel helped and supported. Maybe you didn’t want to have to be so patient, Gemini, but I’m glad you refused to give up hope.
Pretzel (A344551) is 9 years old, and has been at the shelter now for just over two weeks, but in that short time he’s already had quite the impact. He’s extremely affectionate, pushing into us for love, pawing at us to get some attention.
He first came in to the shelter almost 10 years ago as a puppy, and was quickly adopted. We didn’t see him again until just this year, when surprisingly he came in as a stray. When we contacted his adopter, she surrendered him over the phone. No reasons, just simply did not want her dog back. He loves to play, and loves to do simple tricks for treats. But his favorite thing to do is cuddle. Pretzel is a 77-pound teddy bear that just wants to be close to his person.
Orange County Animal Services is located at 2769 Conroy Road in Orlando, near the Mall at Millenia. The shelter is open 10 a.m.-6 p.m. every day except Wednesday, when it’s open 2-6 p.m. For more information, please call 407-8363111 or visit ocnetpets.com.
