City of Orlando to create advisory board to oversee Pulse nightclub memorial project; leaders say it will include ‘shooting survivors, family members of victims and community stakeholders’

Eight years after the deadly mass shooting at Orlando’s Pulse nightclub, city leaders are making progress on a new plan to finally build a memorial for victims and survivors of the shooting.

After buying the former club property just south of downtown last October and taking over the Pulse memorial project two months later, the next step, according to city leaders, will involve the creation of a Pulse Memorial Advisory Committee to guide the memorial project.

The advisory committee will consist of shooting survivors, family members of victims, first responders and other “stakeholders,” according to the city, and is slated to be finalized in early July.

The application to apply for the committee is currently live online, and will accept applications from interested parties through June 21. Mail applications will also be accepted, and must be postmarked by June 21.

Three to four advisers, separate from the committee, will be chosen from the community to review applications without names or personal identifying information (a “blind” selection process). Advisers will select recommendations for the committee, which is expected to consist of 10 to 15 members. Three of those members will be appointed by Orlando Mayor Buddy Dyer.

The makeup of the committee will be formally announced July 8, and the first meeting of the committee is expected to take place the week of July 22.

The memorial project is meant to honor the 49 victims of the June 12, 2016, mass shooting at the gay nightclub, most of whom were queer, Hispanic and Black. It’s also meant to honor the many survivors who attended the club’s Latin Night that fateful day, in addition to families of victims.

Dr. Larry Schooler, a public relations professional who’s been brought on to help oversee the memorial project, stressed that the intent is for this process to be “accessible, inclusive and transparent,” to allow for input and participation from community members in Orlando and survivors and families of victims who live outside of the City Beautiful in other states or countries. Schooler, who’s been involved in similar projects before, began conducting initial focus groups with about 45 family members of victims, survivors, and community stakeholders in

collaboration with Joaquin Guerra — a public relations pro focused on bilingual outreach and engagement — in April.

From that experience, Schooler says a big takeaway is that survivors and family members would like to see the memorial completed “as soon as possible, so that they can honor their loved ones properly and continue their own healing process.”

A Pulse memorial and museum project, led by the now-defunct OnePulse Foundation, had been years in the making, but was recently scrapped after the nonprofit OnePulse formally announced its decision to abandon the project. The nonprofit shuttered its operation entirely on Dec. 31, 2023.

Over the years, members of the public in Orlando — and far beyond — poured millions of dollars into the OnePulse Foundation, with the hope that the nonprofit would be able to deliver a permanent memorial capable of honoring the lives of victims whose lives were stolen, in addition to survivors and others affected by the tragedy, such as family and traumatized first responders who were there that night.

City commissioner Patty Sheehan, who is part of the LGBTQ community herself, admitted Friday that she was “disappointed” and “frustrated” by the OnePulse Foundation’s failures.

“I’m disappointed that OnePulse was not successful and basically raised a lot of money that didn’t go anywhere and did not benefit the people it meant to benefit,” she said during a press conference at City Hall.

Sheehan was reportedly once friendly with the founder of OnePulse, Barbara Poma, who was one of the owners of the Pulse nightclub, along with her husband Rosario and businessman Michael Panaggio. Barbara Poma in particular has been criticized by some over the years for at times paying herself six figures as executive director of the OnePulse Foundation, even as the public waited years for the memorial the nonprofit promised to materialize.

Poma, who was vacationing in Cancun the night of the shooting, stepped down from her role as executive directory in 2022 and separated herself from the organization entirely last year. The Pomas and Panaggio also refused to donate the former club property to build a permanent memorial on the site, and dragged their feet on

selling the property to the city for what eventually was an inflated price of $2 million.

“I’m heartbroken that we were taken advantage of,” Sheehan shared candidly. “I really feel that the LGBTQ community, the victims and survivors were taking advantage of. And now we have to fix it.”

Both Sheehan and Mayor Dyer conceded that they expect fundraising for the city-led memorial project will be harder this time around, considering how much trust (and money) that the public and private donors outside of Orlando contributed the first time around.

“It’s hard for us to go out and ask for private donations until we come up conceptually with what it is that we’re going to build there, so we can share that with people,” said Dyer.

Dyer said that OnePulse claims they have no money left to contribute to the memorial that the nonprofit was once tasked with constructing.

Pulse Families and Survivors for Justice — a group of survivors, families and former club patrons — have called on authorities to conduct a financial audit of OnePulse, to try and determine where the millions of dollars the nonprofit raised over the years actually went.

Publicly available tax forms and audits conducted by the nonprofit itself reveal limited information about their spending and available funds, particularly in the months before the organization dissolved itself.

The group of survivors and family members have called for a third-party inspection of the Pulse nightclub property before the city demolishes it.

For now, city leaders hope the new advisory board will offer a clear path forward in developing the permanent memorial that survivors and families were promised years ago, despite skepticism voiced by some survivors and allies.

According to Schooler, the monthly advisory meetings will be open to the public — available to watch online or attend in-person. So will all meeting agendas and meeting minutes. Spanish translation and outreach will also be made available, with the understanding that many survivors and family members of victims are not native English speakers and feel more comfortable communicating in Spanish.

Some of the victims’ family members and survivors of the shooting no longer live in the Orlando area and have in the past struggled at times to get updates.

One such survivor is Jorshua Hernandez, who currently lives in Puerto Rico. Hernandez was shot multiple times during the nightclub shooting, and told Orlando Weekly last year he still struggles with medical problems from his wounds, as well as mental health and the cost of medical bills.

Christine Leinonen, whose 32-year-old son Christopher bled to death on a dance floor that the city had told the club to get rid of, told Orlando Weekly she plans to apply for the committee. But, she’s concerned by how few members there will be on the board, and that there’s no guarantee the selection process will prioritize placing survivors and victims’ families on the committee,

which Leinonen says should be “the majority of the voices on how this memorial is built.”

“We have not been able to grieve,” said Leinonen, who has previously said it took her over 30 hours to even learn her son had been one of the 49 people killed.

“Had we just been given a simple, dignified memorial right from the beginning, and no one had profited from all of us, we would have already been way into our grieving process,” she added.

Marissa Delgado, a survivor of the shooting, told Orlando Weekly over text that she doesn’t plan to apply for the committee because, frankly, she “[does] not trust the process at all.”

Delgado, who suffered multiple gunshot wounds the night of the massacre, feels the city has been dishonest about the process. She described the press conference on Friday as “bullshit.”

“[It’s] obvious they have anger towards victims/survivors and are doing everything they can to shut everyone up and at the same time placate everyone by saying they are providing opportunities to contribute,” said Delgado.

Commissioner Sheehan specifically said during the press conference that the anniversary of the shooting is something to commemorate, not celebrate, but Delgado believes this position is hypocritical.

“[T]hey said that this is not something to ‘celebrate,’ while they create celebrations and say this is something to celebrate every chance they get,” adding that the city recently referred to an anniversary event as a “celebration” in a recent Facebook post.

City announcements have shared that opportunities for public input and feedback on the memorial project, outside of the advisory committee, will also be available soon.

Over in Osceola County, another tribute focused on honoring the lives of the 49 victims is also in the works.

THE NEVER-ENDING STORY

In a new Audible series on the ‘untold story’ of the Pulse nightclub shooting, investigative journalist Trevor Aaronson says ‘facts clearly show’ Pulse wasn’t targeted because it was a gay club

It’s been eight years since 49 lives were stolen in what was, at the time, the deadliest modern mass shooting to occur in the United States. Our editor in chief quickly picked up on news of the shooting at Orlando’s Pulse nightclub after a gunman opened fire at the club, just south of downtown, in the very early hours of June 12, 2016. It was Latin night. Most of those killed at the gay club were queer young people of color.

While Orlando Weekly has sought to cover the most important developments surrounding the aftermath of the 2016 massacre, journalist Trevor Aaronson of St. Petersburg, Florida, now brings to Audible listeners a new story — not about what happened after gunman Omar Mateen opened fire, but perhaps what could have been done beforehand to prevent the tragedy from occurring in the first place.

Aaronson’s podcast series, “Pulse: the Untold Story,” debuts July 11. It explores the relationship

between the Federal Bureau of Investigations, the gunman and the gunman’s father — who the public only later learned was an FBI informant. Orlando Weekly reported eight years ago, just hours after the shooting, that the gunman had been investigated by the FBI twice before commencing the massacre.

While Aaronson told Orlando Weekly the series doesn’t intend to ascribe blame to any one person or entity, his team’s investigative podcast does delve into the questions of what, if anything the FBI could have done to prevent the shooting, and what role the gunman’s father, Seddique, had in protecting his son.“The Untold Story” questions, for instance, why the gunman’s father promoted the narrative that his son had specifically intended to target a gay nightclub — despite evidence later released that disputes this — and what purpose such a move, if any, could have served to protect the FBI from further scrutiny.

Although the local queer community was disproportionately impacted by the shooting, cellphone data and other evidence revealed through a court trial focused on the role of the gunman’s wife, Noor Salman, shows victims were not targeted due to their sexual orientation. Even so, this doesn’t discount the immense pain this tragedy has caused, and continues to cause our queer community, particularly in a state that has grown ever more hostile to queer and transgender people.

Aaronson, who lives less than two hours away from Orlando, is no newcomer to investigative reporting, nor investigations scrutinizing the FBI. Aaronson is the author of the book The Terror Factory: Inside the FBI’s Manufactured War on Terrorism and a contributing writer for The Intercept. He also hosted the podcast series “Alphabet Boys” and the Audible Originals “American ISIS” and “Hold Fast.” Orlando Weekly interviewed Aaronson to learn more about what

his team’s investigation reveals about the Pulse nightclub shooting, and the takeaways his team hopes locals to be able to get from it.

Note: The contents of the podcast series, which include audio clips of 911 calls the night of the shooting, may be disturbing or difficult for some local listeners to revisit. Please listen with caution.

OW: First of all, what was it exactly that drew you to this story? You live in St. Pete, which isn’t far from Orlando, but this didn’t exactly happen in your own backyard.

TA: I felt it as somewhat of a local story, because I was living in St. Pete at the time, and Orlando, while a two-hour drive away, still feels very, very close. And so I remember waking up and seeing with everyone else on the news, you know, this kind of horrific mass shooting at this gay club in Orlando. And I didn’t have any anticipation of writing or covering Pulse until Noor Salman’s [wife of the gunman] trial, and when it was revealed that Seddique Mateen, Omar Mateen’s father, had been an FBI informant for about 11 years. A lot of my prior research has been on the FBI’s use of informants in criminal investigations, and I was really familiar with the kinds of the abuses that can happen with these cases. One of Noor Salman’s defense lawyers mentioned to me that he thought this was a case of FBI corruption and a lack of accountability, and so during the pandemic, I was spending more time looking into this case. And one of my incentives in looking into it was this idea

that when the FBI is pursuing sting operations, where they’re kind of setting up some dupe in an undercover investigation — are they missing real threats?

So for me, there was a kind of larger story about whether the FBI could have prevented the Pulse nightclub shooting, given its investigations of Omar, but then also, kind of on a very macro level, whether the FBI’s counter-terrorism tactics, its use of informants … maybe just doesn’t work in keeping us safer.

What would you say was your biggest discovery in the making of the series — was there a discovery of something you suspected, but didn’t already know?

Some of this came out during Noor Salman’s trial, and so I had a clue as to what was happening. For example, what we knew coming out of Noor Salman’s trial was that the FBI and the Department of Justice had clearly pushed forward this false narrative that Omar Mateen had specifically targeted Pulse because it was a gay club, when in reality, the evidence seems to suggest that Omar may not have even known it was a gay club and went to the club at the last minute, at random. We also know that the FBI had investigated Omar twice as a security threat, and both times, the FBI dropped those investigations because his father, an informant, encouraged them to do so. What I think is interesting is the questions that are unanswered that we try to answer and bring some theories forward about in the series.

One is the question of: Why now, eight years after the shooting, does the FBI still classify Omar Mateen’s case file as an open investigation? If you FOIA [Freedom of Information Act] the records, they will tell you it’s an open investigation. And this is despite the fact that immediately after the shooting, the FBI said it would be open and transparent about its investigation and whether it did anything wrong.

Then separately, there are really a lot of questions about Seddique Mateen and his role with his son, and what his son’s motives might really have been.

We know, for example, that Seddique and Omar had a very tumultuous relationship, and it’s possible that the attack may not have been based on any sort of homophobic beliefs, or even in any sort of like, religious extremist beliefs. But instead, it could have been Omar Mateen wanting to harm his father in an irreparable way, which … if your father is an FBI counter-terrorism informant, how do you harm him more than becoming a terrorist yourself? Kind of related to that is the fact that immediately after the shooting, it was Omar Mateen’s father, Seddique, who implanted this idea that Omar Mateen was a homophobe and he targeted Pulse because it was a gay club.

You can draw an inference, certainly, that Seddique was concerned about how his son’s terrorist attack would harm his career with the FBI. And I think Seddique saw it as a situation where it would be a lot easier for him if his son

struck me, though, is that most of the survivors I spoke with firmly believe the false narrative that is carried forward that Omar Mateen was secretly gay, that he attacked Pulse because it was a gay club. I don’t want to take away anyone’s explanation, or the peace that they’ve come to in having lived through this horrific experience. At the same time, the facts clearly show that this wasn’t a typical hate crime. The club wasn’t targeted because it was a gay club. Omar Mateen panicked. He first went to Disney Springs, and then he went to EVE downtown, and he realized both of those targets were too difficult, and he just happened to drive by Pulse, and he chose it at the last minute, at random. I think there is this need to want to explain these kinds of mass shootings, to want to have meaning for it, right?

I think we interviewed about a dozen [survivors]. The overwhelming majority believed that Omar Mateen was secretly gay, had been to Pulse and specifically chose Pulse in order to harm and kill gay people as a hate crime. A few survivors did acknowledge that they had heard from media reports after the Noor Salman trial [in 2018] that there were questions about whether this was true, but few really believed that. I also talked to a lot of survivors who really felt that justice really wasn’t served in acquitting his [Omar’s] widow Noor Salman.

Beyond survivors, who else did you speak to as part of your investigation?

was seen as homophobic. You know, that this was seen as a hate crime rather than an act of terrorism. He had a direct incentive in trying to encourage this narrative that Omar Mateen was a homophobe.

What were some of the biggest challenges you faced during your investigation?

One primary challenge was the fact that the FBI would not cooperate at all, even to answer a list of questions. I also contacted Seddique Mateen. He declined my interview. My colleague and I went to his home, and his wife slammed the door in our faces. So there was no cooperation from them. But we were able to piece together the FBI side of the story through some testimony that came out during Noor Salman’s trial, as well as through FBI sources that I have outside of that investigation. One of the people interviewed is a former agent named Jeffrey Danik, who describes the kind of processes that the FBI has, and how something like Seddique Mateen’s involvement could happen, and what the FBI’s role would have been in keeping Seddique Mateen on the payroll during that time.

I think the storytelling required a sensitivity that was maybe greater than most of the projects I’ve worked on.

Yeah, so you did speak with survivors of the Pulse tragedy while putting this story together. Can you share what those conversations were like?

It was probably among the more difficult reporting and storytelling tasks I’ve had. What

I spoke with people who knew Omar. You know, his first wife, Sitora Yusufiy. I also spoke to people who worked with him. He was a security guard, and so there were people at the courthouse that had worked with him that I spoke to, as well as people who worked with him at PGA Village. Separately, I also spoke with people who were familiar with his father and his history, from coming from Afghanistan to becoming an FBI informant.

Then, finally, a large source of this from a narrative perspective was Charlie Swift and Linda Moreno, who were the attorneys for Noor Salman during their defense. And they are really the ones who were able to kind of break down the cell phone data to show that Omar had not targeted the club in advance. I think it’s important to acknowledge that, had it not been for the FBI and the Justice Department charging Noor Salman with a terrorism offense as a result of Omar Mateen’s crime and shooting, we likely wouldn’t know that this whole narrative had been false — because the evidence that the FBI had collected became public as a result of that trial.

The reason that this is, I think, egregious, is that it shows that early on in the FBI investigation they were aware that Omar Mateen had not targeted Pulse in advance, and they were also aware that none of the claims about Omar having attended Pulse in advance were true, and yet they allowed that narrative to persist in the media. I think the larger question that I hope the series is able to have people ask is, why?

Note: This interview has been lightly edited for clarity and length.

IT TAKES TWO

Showing the Pathways exhibit in two galleries at once lets viewers in on the talent-spotting game for Florida’s future art stars

You read that right: The same exhibit is at two places through the summer.

Commanding more local gallery real estate than any other art show at the moment, Pathways exhibits the work of six emerging artists competing for the Carlos Malamud Prize. All of them have work at both Rollins and UCF, with nearly five dozen individual works on display.

We managed a few minutes with Malamud at the May 31 opening, where his eyes twinkled with excitement over the impending announcement of the winner. “So many young artists have great talent, but are shy about promotion,” Malamud observed.“We wanted a barrier-free process to give talent a chance to get started.”

Having started the Miami Prize in the MiamiDade high schools, Malamud decided to embark on a collaborative UCF-Rollins biannual cycle of

juries and exhibits. Together with curators Gisela Carbonell of Rollins, Shannon Lindsey of UCF, independent curator Ginger Gregg Duggan of CuratorSquared and collector Dennis Scholl, the 2024 jury also included the previous winner, Eugene Ofori Agyei.

The 2024 Carlos Malamud Prize winner, Tenee’ Hart, will receive $10,000, as well as guidance and mentorship from the jurors. She will have a UCF Art Gallery solo exhibit in 2025 and be a member of next year’s jury.

Prize-giving can also be taste-making and trend-setting. The finalists this year were photographers, sculptors and installation artists. Hart’s installations of fiber sculpture, which she describes as “wrapped, knotted, sewn and housepaint-slathered,” occupied corners and alcoves, softly lit with pink and lavender lighting, their organic qualities

evoking domestic femininity on the surface but with a manic creepiness underneath.

2024’s finalists are outstanding. Samuel AyeGboyin, a Florida photographer originally from Ghana, brings an unusually mature eye to portraiture, elevating Ghanaians in their everyday lives with gorgeously lit, seemingly casual black and white compositions. Fernando Ramos photographs in color, and takes his portraiture a step further with many subjects in masks or costumes. Diego Alejandro Waisman, originally from Argentina, pursues themes of displacement in his photographs of Miami’s trailer parks, which have their own dark poetry about them. Clio Yang is a Florida-based mixed media artist; besides photography, Yang’s video installation “Blind Box” at UCF is seen through a scrim jumping with text and drawings. Her video work is a compelling look at global digital culture and references feelings of disconnection and searching.

In both galleries, Patricia Cooke’s furniture installations and wall sculptures occupy vertical and horizontal space. Pink neoprene is scissored and sewn into elaborate Victorian rocking chairs, dressers, end tables, and they’re all suspended by wide pink cloth tape from the ceiling above. Cooke’s stated inspiration was to re-create the feeling of her grandmother’s living room, but the effect is like this stuff just shot down from somewhere, leaving contrails perhaps tied to a ship

somewhere far above. We asked her why neoprene, and she confided there was a surplus after the pandemic (neoprene makes good masks). It gave the mock furniture a kind of unbearable sweetness. Sweet or tart, this show’s a great tour of Florida’s up-and-coming visual art talent. Each gallery has unique ways of presenting the work, and if you are able to see both you can start to see what Malamud sees in these artists: consistency, rigor and talent. Art, as a pursuit, usually has humble beginnings, and getting a push in the right direction can often make the difference in an artist’s career. The two galleries exhibiting Pathways give viewers a chance to be in on the talent-spotting game for Florida’s future art stars.

Pirates Dinner

Adventure sails into its third decade with a new production and a new plan to let audiences ‘be’ the show, not just watch it

Back in the mid-1990s, before Universal and Disney both ballooned into the vacation-devouring behemoths they are today, a number of independent dinner theaters managed to survive in the shadow of the big resorts. One-time staples of the 192 and I-Drive tourist corridors such as King Henry’s Feast, Arabian Nights, Wild Bill’s Wild West Dinner Show and MurderWatch Mystery Theatre are now all merely faded memories. But for more than 25 years, Pirates Dinner Adventure (piratesdinneradventure.com) has managed to not only endure — along with a handful of its contemporaries, like Medieval Times, Capone’s and Sleuths Mystery Dinner Show — but also expand, adding the Teatro Martini Vaudeville Variety Revue (previously Treasure Tavern), a Country Nights Live barbecue dinner show and the Jewel speakeasy piano bar.

Throughout the years, the Carrier Drive complex’s pirate-themed stunt show — which was originally framed as a soundstage film shoot at “Colossal Studios” — has overcome considerable hurricane damage and gone through countless updates, such as the addition of an animatronic sea serpent. Now, ahead of their tricennial anniversary in 2026, Pirates has turned to original show writer-director Michael La Fleur to helm “In Search of Neptune’s Treasure,” their all-new flagship production, which debuted at the end of May.

The basic elements that have made Pirates popular are all still intact — a cast of color-coded buccaneers aboard an impressive galleon set perform high-flying acrobatics and swashbuckling swordplay, while guests chow down on wedding-banquet chicken — but now there’s a new Broadway-style musical score, along with the refreshed stunts and script. The result is a

show that still has plenty of action to please the youngsters, who are invited to participate in the piratical competitions, while adding more theatrical depth that appeals to their older siblings and parents.

I sat down during the grand opening gala with La Fleur, the creative director of Pirates Dinner Adventure, to hear how he and his team are keeping the ship sailing into its fourth decade.

During his globe-spanning career, La Fleur has worked with Celine Dion, Sarah Brightman and Cirque du Soleil’s Franco Dragone, as well as most of the major theme park players, but it all began with Burt.

“I worked at Burt Reynolds’ dinner theater in Jupiter for many, many years,” he recalls. “I’ve always been drawn to entertainment and the stage. I was a performer — singer, actor, dancer — my whole life, and when I was working for Burt Reynolds around my early 30s, he pulled me aside and said, ‘Kid, you’re a director.’ ‘And I was like, ‘No, no, no.’ ‘Yes, you are!’ And he gave me a show, so my first professional directing job was pinch-hitting for Burt Reynolds.”

Early on, the Spanish brothers who owned Pirates (as well as the long-gone Terror on Church Street) brought in La Fleur to take over a show that had “a lot of elements, but it was missing a through-line.” La Fleur says he worked with the cast to create relatable characters with backstories. “What I wanted to do is take a movie-going experience and the theater experience and try to fuse them together. We tried to create what I like to call a living cinematic immersive experience, like watching a grand epic movie on the screen, but it’s live in front of you.”

For this new version, La Fleur says his focus

was on crafting a show with cross-generational appeal, so that “it’s not just pirates fighting each other all night long.” The love story and singing (including a couple of original songs and traditional tunes) should satiate the less bloodthirsty audience members, but holding the attention of a new generation raised on screens is another matter. “We went from the amphitheater of Greece to the theater, to the movie screen to the TV screen, and now the computer screen to the phone. So all the audiences have now stopped looking out, and now they look down,” he observes. “We’re finding that people really want to be the show, not necessarily watch the show.” Accordingly, the new production surrounds patrons in the percussive action with “a lot of loud noises, a lot of fighting, a lot of gunshots and cannon fire … to pull their eyes back up.”

With Universal and Disney both budgeting billions for additional attractions in the coming decade, I fear for Pirates and the other off-property attractions that are vying for an ever-smaller slice of the pie, but La Fleur remains optimistic about the future.

“We’ve heard the gloom and doom stories since I was performing with Disney — back when the paint was wet on the castle — that everything was going to come to an end,” he says.

“After the parks, sometimes [visitors] just want to get away and do something in a party environment; they want to see something unique. What we offer here at Pirate’s Dinner Adventure is a unique experience. We’ve been here for 30 years through all the naysayers, and I believe we’re here for another 30.”

DRIVE DOWN MEMORY LANE

Mid Drive Dive embraces College Park’s past with its midcentury aesthetics and menu

To drive College Park’s dining scene forward, Matt Hinckley checked the rearview mirror and reversed it back to America’s Golden Age of the 1950s and 1960s. In Mid Drive Dive, billed as a “mid-century dive bar and restaurant,” Hinckley — an East End Market fixture with Hinckley’s Fancy Meats and Boxer & Clover — and Jacob and Brittany Zepf of Freehand Goods and The Neighbors have done just that. Well, the “restaurant” part, anyway, because there’s really nothing divey about the bar. The live-edge bar fashioned from monkey-pod wood, the vintage mid-mod stools, and the framed photographs and posters capturing post-war Orlando provide a curated platform on which to serve some stiff and crafty cocktails. There’s a counter made of American walnut fronting the TVs, and globe sconces shining light onto smooth terrazzo-top tables. But strip it all away and what’s left is a neighborhood

diner that every neighborhood in the city would be envious of. Yes, you’ll find throwback dishes very much in keeping with the midcentury motif — an incredible “fatty melt” ($18) comprised of a seared beef and bone marrow patty; steak Diane ($29) with peppercorn cream sauce; and icebox cake ($8), a ’50s cookbook staple.

Or at least you once could.

Seems like College Parkers weren’t taking to those bygone-era presentations, so they were summarily 86’ed from the menu. In this case, what was old wasn’t new again.

But bite into any of Hinckley’s fancy meat burgers — like the medium-rare elk-bacon cheeseburger ($19) with smoked paprika aioli on an onion roll, or the revelatory mushroom smashburger ($17) made with Florida beef and topped with melted gruyere, grilled onions and porcini aioli — and you’ll be of the opinion

that both are ones for the history books. Those books may redefine “smashburger,” though; these patties were definitely on the thicker side. Hinckley’s duck à la king ($28), a variation of the classic chicken à la king, has duck confit tossed in gravy-slicked egg noodles with mushrooms, peas, pimientos and scallions. It’s a hefty, comfort-filled plate that could feed two. While it’s a permanent item on the menu (for now), it would also make a fitting blue plate special. Hinckley offers a daily changing item which, initially, was to be served over rice or noodles — like the mishkaki, or skewers of beef marinated in East African spices, I had when the restaurant opened in February. But, in the weeks since, the blue-plate specials are now based on the feedback received from the community. Hey, I get it — give the people what they want. But when you conform to the palates of Yelpers and College Parkers, there’s inevitably going to be a dumbing-down. When I first had the ceviche ($16), with its bracing mix of cobia, aji amarillo, toasted cancha corn, avocado, cilantro, onions, citrus segments and a halved sweet potato propped up inside the bowl, I couldn’t stop raving about it. When I went back a few days later with some friends, the same dish had been dispossessed of its soul. Gone was the cancha and sweet potato, plus I noticed a lot more onions and a lot less cilantro (just two leaves in that bowl). When I asked our server, who was an absolute delight, about the rationale of the recipe change, I was told it was “based on customer feedback.” Double eyeroll. Here’s hoping the Cobb salad ($16) and the beet and orange ($12), with its almond dukkah and sherry vinaigrette, aren’t tinkered with. Mess with the Cajun fish sandwich ($21) and Hinckley may be chasing a hoodoo down Edgewater Drive. BTW: The fries served with the sandwiches and burgers are textbook executions. I love that pineapple-upside down cake ($8) leads the list of MDD’s dessert offerings. I’ve had it when it’s been a spongy, buttery, caramelized round of indulgence and when it’s been a bit dry and heavy. Which only means I’ll order it again. If that old-school capper isn’t your thing, there’s always chocolate chip cookies ($5) — these are crisp and crunchy. No raw dough served here.

In all of my three visits to the diner, I’ve left wishing that Mid Drive Dive existed when I lived in College Park. It really is the ideal neighborhood restaurant, and it’s a particularly great fit within a community that embraces its mid-century leanings. Here, the past is prime. fkara@orlandoweekly.com

SUICIDE HOTLINE

Teen Suicide talk inspiration, influences and being a ‘real’ band (at last) ahead of rare local show

Indie-pop (and so much more) band Teen Suicide have just finished their first U.S. tour as a full band since 2016. It’s a triumphant comeback, after several years of relative silence. But there’s one final piece of business from that trek for the Orlando-via-Baltimore band: a rescheduled headlining show at Will’s Pub, formerly set for the Beacham, along with openers the Synthetics and Curtains Thursday.

Teen Suicide’s creative nucleus, frontperson Sam Ray and synth player Kitty Ray, are excited for this Orlando show on Will’s intimate stage. “It makes me feel very satisfied, because when I was younger I used to always go to Will’s. I remember specifically seeing Loma Prieta,” reflects Kitty. “It was the day before I started making music and I thought to myself, ‘I’m gonna play here one day’— and now I get to, it’s very exciting.”

“I love the place, it might actually be my favorite place to play in town,” says Sam. “I was so happy when I found out we could play at Will’s, everyone in the band, all four of us were just so happy.”

The whole concert is a bit of a family affair too, with members of dreamy post-punk band and openers the Synthetics — drummer Nathan Munizzi and bassist Sean LaBree — now also doing double duty in Teen Suicide.

It’s a creatively satisfying end to the Rays’ seemingly endless struggle to find permanent bandmates. All the band members now live in the same city — “like a real band,” says Sam.

Teen Suicide started as a solo vehicle for Sam Ray around 2009, over the years multiplying into a duo and then an ever-shifting collective of musicians, before finally solidifying into the quartet you (will soon) see before you. The band’s sound is eclectic — taking in everything

from heart-on-sleeve indie-pop to electro-noise explosions — exemplified by 2022’s expansive comeback album, Honeybee Table at the Butterfly Feast, and the new songs they’re excitedly working on.

The creatively restless band are always eager to change things up and organically try out new sounds, techniques and methodologies.

“No matter how DIY we get with it, we’ve still learned new things and absorbed a lot. So I think that any difference in how the band sounds is mostly just us ‘growing’ in the most basic sense of the word,” Kitty says. “Rather than saying, ‘We went and studied on purpose,’ this is just us becoming adults.”

“We don’t aspire to just make the music we make. I think when we get considered one genre it’s cool, instead of [us] trying to say, you know, ‘We are punk,’” Sam ponders.

TEEN SUICIDE with the Synthetics, Curtains

7 p.m. Thursday, June 13

Will’s Pub 1042 N. Mills Ave. willspub.org $22

“It’s like a collage of all things, like upcycling everyone’s ideas,” Kitty adds.

“Yeah, very much like dumpster-diving,” says Sam.

Musical and artistic inspiration for the band is, indeed, all over the map: a song from the 1989 cult classic Heathers , titled “Teenage Suicide (Don’t Do It)” was brought up, as well as seminal 1970s synthpunk duo Suicide, for their band’s moniker — to just name two.

“You know how the Muppet Babies are the baby version of the Muppets?” Kitty asks. “I like to think of Teen Suicide as the teen version of the band Suicide, and that defers the blame of the name on them and not us.”

Influence for Teen Suicide’s music also comes from other unconventional places: hazy memories and Mandela Effect-style pop culture fragments.

“Almost like a visual abstract thing; it’s like a dream,” Sam explains. “Maybe you get an image stuck in your head, or misremember something from a film, or even someone’s stupid post on a Tumblr blog where they make weird pixel art and you feel some way about it.”

As mentioned, new music is on the way; the band has many songs written and practiced but they have yet to hide away in an incense-lit studio, stoned out of their minds, to record. Kitty says they’ll be playing new songs at the Orlando show and have already been playing a few throughout their recent tour. Vibes to expect for the new album will be much more “chaotic,” Kitty says. (Good, we need more chaos.)

Setting the mood for listening to Teen Suicide’s music, past and present, is essential and Sam and Kitty have different takes on the proper setting for listening to their records.

“Ikea,” Sam deadpans.

“I think if I heard Teen Suicide at Ikea I’d think I was having like psychosis,” Kitty says. “It depends on the album but I think when you’re laying face-down on your bed getting very stoned having FOMO.”

“See, I’ve never looked at the band the way I heard a lot of people we talk to at shows see it — like, depressing or something — but to me it’s always been the music that you listen to riding around in a car late at night really high, just chilling,” Sam opposes.

As the band preps for a night of melancholic gazing at pedals and we bring our conversation to a close, Kitty adds two final thoughts.

“Free Palestine,” she says. “Oh, and my dad’s gonna be there. If you add this he has to come.”

See you there, Kitty’s dad.

LOCAL RELEASES

Every move that Orlando indie-rock band Acoqui have made over the past decade has been an event. Acoqui began in the early 2010s as the solo ambient project of Alberto Hernandez, but really took flight once it bloomed into a stacked all-star band that includes Aaron Borowicz (Loose Touch, Attachedhands), Steven Head (White Sands, Moon Jelly) and Tyson Bodiford (Loose Touch, Summerbirds in the Cellar), all pedigreed players from Orlando’s indie and experimental music scenes.

But while infrequent output and live appearances would doom most acts to obscurity, Acoqui’s scarcity has only rarefied their high profile. Now, seven years later, they’re finally reemerging with their long-awaited sophomore album, Drive By Dream. While their 2017 debut LP (A Heart Fills This Way) was an exercise in texture and atmosphere, this new nine-song album sheds the shoegaze haze for clearer, cozier sonics. Rather than washing over you, Acoqui’s latest sound seeks instead to wrap itself around you with its indie-psych warmth. The melodies float and mesmerize with a bedroom aura that uses its close range to sound both intimate and big. After a long gestation in seasoned, meticulous hands like theirs, Drive By Dream is, unsurprisingly, an exceptionally conceived and rendered work.

As befits a band that takes steps with great deliberation and show, Drive By Dream features even bigger star credits than ever. Besides mixing by Samur Khouja (Cate Le Bon, Deerhunter, Devendra Banhart, Joanna Newsom) and mastering by Heba Kadry (Björk, Boygenius, Beach House, Sufjan Stevens, Neon Indian), Luke Temple appears as both producer and guest artist on this album.

Rather than washing over you, Acoqui’s latest sounds wrap around you with indie-psych warmth. The melodies on Drive By Dream float and mesmerize with a bedroom aura that uses its close range to sound both intimate and big

Drive By Dream will release everywhere on June 14. Orlando will get an early peek of it at a special advance listening party tonight, June 12, at Lil Indie’s. It’s a free event that will air the album in its entirety at 7, 8 and 9 p.m.

CONCERT PICKS THIS WEEK

Sunny Sweeney: I would be the last person on Earth to rue the growing factionalism in country music since that’s probably the only thing that can save it from the Nashville pop establishment. That’s what makes an artist like Texas songbird Sunny Sweeney particularly remarkable these days. She’s got a pure voice that doesn’t just carry the true country torch but also makes it translate well across the Americana spectrum. It’s a deft skill that’s resonated with both deep country aficionados and casual fans

of many stripes for nearly two decades. (8 p.m. Saturday, June 15, Tuffy’s Music Box, $20)

Hide, Harpy, Mirrored Fatality, Putrid Fauve: Intense sounds can be found every week in the city, but few shows will deliver them with as much edge and theater as this femme-forward lineup. These acts prowl the savage wilds of the dark avant-garde, using music as performance art and sometimes even provocation. Chicago duo Hide pound out toxic industrial nihilism with the fury of noise and punk. The harrowing sounds of Rhode Island’s Harpy are like a grisly horror movie set to a piledriving beat. L.A.’s Mirrored Fatality are an electronic noisepunk performance act who make a fantastically shocking display of their anti-establishment messages. And Tampa Bay’s Putrid Fauve will simply smother you with their harsh rhythmic noise. Go experience the thrillingly fine line between entertainment and terror. (8 p.m. Sunday, June 16, Stardust Video & Coffee, $10-$13)

Harber Wynn: Hannah Harber and Thomas Wynn are a premier power couple in the Orlando roots music scene who’ve made canonical names for themselves as individual artists. While the wife and husband have frequently performed together on stage before, only recently have they officially come together as Harber Wynn, a brand-new entity unto itself. This special engagement will be Harber Wynn’s Orlando debut, where they’ll showcase their new joint material alongside some favorites from their own respective catalogs. It’ll be a fresh, exciting look at two local hall-of-famers. (7 and 9 p.m. Tuesday, June 18, Judson’s Live, $15) baolehuu@orlandoweekly.com

The harmonious collision of drag and techno that is Kandi Krave has at last returned, this time to dance-centric Milk District venue Iron Cow. The theme is Summer Lovin’, for ’tis the season, and DJs Bitcrusher Boi, Stardoll, Nedz and Renracas are set to lay down a set of leftfield beats and hyper-tropical grooves. They’ll be paired with drag performances from Alexandria Hell, Draggedy Anne, Annie Mae, Sue Cyde and Amnesia Effect. Worth noting is that Sue Cyde’s creative, intricate and avant-pop personae constantly dazzle and that Amnesia Effect leaves it all on the floor in the way that few do during her very physical performances. All of them are unmissable and adventurous, for that matter, so get ready to be happily parted from your dollar bills. 10 p.m., Iron Cow, 2438 E. The Menzingers

“Come on heartache, don’t hurt me no more.” Loss, love and landlords, album after album — Scranton, Pennsylvania’s Menzingers consistently offer rough-and-tumble harmonies to soundtrack our lives. Formed in 2006, to date the band has released eight albums, with their most recent, Some of It Was True, released October of last year. That latest release is the namesake of this current tour, which is selling out shows across the country. The “Menzos,” as fan lovingly refer to them, are in many ways a barometer for the millennial state of mind: careening between existential crisis and euphoric joy. And on Friday night, they’ll once again be bringing their wholeheartedly heartbroken melodies to the Beacham. And just like you, they won’t be alone — they have a killer lineup of supporting acts: Memphis’ Lucero (Orlando live favorites in their own right), and Ontario’s Dirty Nil. 7 p.m., The Beacham, 46 N. Orange Ave., foundation-presents.com, $33-$50. — Ida V. Eskamani

Everything Weird Mangled Hand, aka Amber Teicher — familiar to gig-goers at Conduit in Winter Park, keeping things running smoothly during shows — debuts a solo exhibition Friday. Teicher, as Mangled Hand (an all-time great pseudonym), has appeared as part of group art shows exhibited at the Falcon, Hammered Lamb, and Indie’s — all organized by Lil Indie’s curator Heidi Kneisl, who is now shining the solo spotlight on the Mangled One. Teicher’s artistic background includes a degree in scenic design and years spent practicing her craft in theme parks and theaters, while still stealthily toiling away on her own strange visions. Everything Weird is a fantastical and eclectic collection of mixed-media art — one diorama seemingly mixes Evil Dead with Wallace and Gromit aesthetics; a shadowbox reveals a gnarled puppet fortuneteller; creepy yet stately anthropomorphic animal portraits abound; another piece combines affectingly carved cats, bats and mushrooms (some sort of holy trinity, surely). American Harp Society National Conference

For the first time ever, The American Harp Society will host events this week in Orlando as part of their 45th national conference. The four-day event features a blend of instructional sessions and live performances by internationally acclaimed harpists. Saturday offers a free harp discovery day at the Grace Covenant Presbyterian Church. This event is geared toward students interested in composing music and young folks, with workshops like “Mysteries of Composing & Arranging for the Harp” and a “Harp Petting Zoo.” Conference attendees can also take in a performance of music inspired by Hitchcock’s iconic The Birds soundtrack, by soloist Noël Wan on acoustic and amplified harp. Programming throughout the conference speaks to the surprising versatility of this instrument, including a finale evening of psych-rock from Descofar, and Django and jazz swing from Transatlantic Hot Club. Renaissance Orlando at SeaWorld, 6677 Sea Harbor Drive, harpsociety. org/register, $150-$315. — HE

Music Mondays: Louder Than You Think

Weird elders are an important, if rarely discussed, part of the indie band ecosystem. That grayhaired lady at the show wearing a 40-year-old Sonic Youth T-shirt, that dude with the cane whose band toured with Butthole Surfers — they’re valuable sources of history and, often, support. So it was with “unhinged alcoholic

weirdo” Gary Young. After a youth spent in punk bands, Young opened a studio in Stockton, California, where indie-rock princelings Pavement made their first recordings, free of charge. Young played drums on those records; his substancefueled antics and extra decades made him the odd man out among the other languid, literary, ice-cool members. That tension may have made their songs more interesting — it definitely made the shows more interesting — but Young was

booted from the band before they broke big. Jed Rosenberg’s film explores the history of a weird elder who catalyzed a cultural moment, from how his recordings of Pavement created their early lo-fi aesthetic to his eventual “crash landing” — using puppets to retell the tough moments. As this documentary is almost impossible to stream, you’ve got a non-negotiable date on Monday. 9:30 p.m., Enzian Theater, 1300 S. Orlando Ave., Maitland, enzian.org, $12.50. — Jessica Bryce Young
