If the uterus isn’t emptied the woman will develop infection that could kill her — or as we doctors say potentially lethal sepsis or DIC induced hemorrhage

Orlando cops will get two raises this year, Florida Supreme Court sides with DeSantis over ‘anti-riot’ law cracking down on protesters, and other news you may have missed

» New passport office to open in Orlando

Thanks to Orlando-area Congressman Maxwell Frost, a new United States passport agency will soon be coming to Orlando, one of just six U.S. cities getting a new office. The State Department selected Orlando for what will be the state’s second passport agency, joining an existing one in Miami. The new office was announced by Frost last Tuesday, who said he pressed State Department officials for another agency throughout his first year in office. “This is a win for people all across the South,” said Frost. Orlando is already home to several privately run passport counters, where residents can take passport photos, send the photos to the State Department and receive their passport by mail several weeks later. Official passport agencies, however, allow people to get a new passport on the day of their appointment in the case of last-minute travel needs. Frost said Orlando could be looking at a one-year timeline, however, depending on the location.

» Orlando police officers set to get two pay raises this year Orlando City Council quietly approved a second pay raise earlier this month for sworn officers, sergeants, and lieutenants in the Orlando Police Department, who will now be getting a raise both on July 7 and Oct. 1, 2024. Under OPD’s current union contract, the October raise of roughly 4 percent was already guaranteed; the second raise, approved by city leaders, will boost pay for the lowest-paid officers by roughly 13 percent (ensuring no sworn officer will make less than $62,129 annually) and boost pay for the others by 6 percent. This includes police lieutenants, who already make six-figure salaries. City spokesperson Ashley Papagni, over email, explained to Orlando Weekly that these changes were enacted “in order to remain competitive with comparable jurisdictions for top quality law enforcement officers.” Papagni, however, could not definitively tell us whether other city employees — who are either non-union or represented by a different labor union — will also see such a raise. From what we can tell, the extra or enhanced raise will only apply to the cops.

» Downtown Orlando to host live performances with new yearlong initiative

The city of Orlando is collaborating with local agency United Arts of Central Florida for a new project, dubbed DTO Live, which aims to make more art experiences available to Orlando residents and visitors. DTO Live will bring more than 800 events to downtown Orlando between now and June 2025, at 11 downtown locations. The locations stretch about a two-mile radius from City Hall to the North Quarter district adjacent to Lake Highland Preparatory School. Most performers on the current schedule are musicians, including jazz, R&B and alternative acts. But the DTO Live calendar, which shows events booked throughout July, also features dance, poetry and even a mime performance from Ben Macon. “DTO Live marks a significant step toward championing a world-class cultural scene, fueling the momentum toward a downtown that thrives both economically and culturally,” said Orlando Mayor Buddy Dyer. DTO Live is part of the city’s ongoing Project DTO, which first kicked off in 2014 to bolster both creativity and economic competitiveness within the city.

» DeSantis signs Florida bill allowing homeowners to kill bears, vetoes left lane bill

Gov. Ron DeSantis last Friday signed a controversial measure that will bolster self-defense arguments for people who kill bears on their property, while vetoing a bill that would have prevented motorists from cruising in the left lanes of highways. The bill about bears (HB 87) provides a sort of stand-your-ground defense for people who shoot bears to defend themselves or property. Opponents have said they will consider legal action to try to halt the law, which is scheduled to take effect July 1. DeSantis also vetoed a bill (HB 317) that would have prevented drivers from cruising in left lanes of highways with at least two lanes and speed limits of at least 65 mph. The bill included exemptions for drivers passing other motorists, preparing to exit, turning from left lanes or being directed to left lanes by officers or traffic-control devices. In a veto letter, DeSantis said the bill was “too broad” and that it could result in motorists “being pulled over, ticketed and fined for driving in the furthest left lane even if they are not impeding the flow of traffic of if there are few or no other cars in the immediate area.”

» Florida Supreme Court sides with DeSantis over ‘anti-riot’ law cracking down on protesters

Rejecting arguments that the law is ambiguous, the Florida Supreme Court said last week that peaceful protesters are not threatened by a measure, known as House Bill 1, that Gov. Ron DeSantis and the Legislature passed in 2021 to crack down on violent demonstrations. DeSantis championed the law after nationwide protests following the 2020 death of George Floyd, a Black man who was killed by a Minneapolis police officer. But civil-rights groups filed a federal lawsuit challenging the constitutionality of the measure, contending it could lead to peaceful protesters facing charges when demonstrations turn violent. Chief U.S. District Judge Mark Walker in 2021 issued a preliminary injunction against the law, describing it as unconstitutionally “vague and overbroad.” The state appealed, but the 11th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals took the somewhat unusual step of requesting help from the Florida Supreme Court with what it called a “novel” issue — how to determine the meaning of the word “riot” in the law. Last week’s main opinion disputed Walker’s conclusion that the law was ambiguous. It also agreed with DeSantis and the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office, another defendant in the lawsuit, that a “peaceful protester, under the most natural reading of the statute, is no rioter.” The Supreme Court ruling will go to the 11th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals, which will use it in determining whether to overturn Walker’s preliminary injunction. The challenge to the law was filed by groups including the Dream Defenders and the Florida State Conference of the NAACP.

Orange County leaders delay voting on medical debt cancellation initiative

‘How does this actually affect credit scores and credit reports?’ asked one commissioner

After initially green-lighting an initiative in February that would leverage federal pandemic relief funds to cancel hundreds of millions of dollars in medical debt for local residents, the Orange County board of commissioners on Tuesday delayed a vote on final approval of the project.

The decision to delay the initiative initially championed by local community organizers came after several commissioners voiced questions about the logistics of the process and expressed concerns about whether their investment would have a truly meaningful impact.

A county administrator was able to answer some questions. But Undue Medical Debt, the nonprofit that the county would be working with on the project, did not make a representative available at the meeting to answer others.

This ultimately made some commissioners uncomfortable with moving forward on a vote.

“We’re doing the right thing here. We’re paying for this debt. How does that actually affect our residents’ credit scores and credit reports?” asked county commissioner Nicole Wilson, who expressed concern that the process would be incompatible with the ways that the debt collection process works. “I want to be able to hear from them [Undue Medical Debt] and see that before we sign off.”

When reached for comment, the nonprofit’s vice president of communications, Daniel Lempert, told Orlando Weekly that they offered to join the Tuesday meeting virtually, since their leadership is based in New York.

“It’s our understanding that wasn’t an option,” wrote Lempert over email.

“We’re excited about the opportunity to facilitate medical debt relief for qualifying Orange County residents, and we’ll make ourselves available in the near future to answer any lingering questions from the county board and hopefully finalize the contract.”

Undue Medical Debt, a nonprofit formerly known as RIP Medical Debt, has worked with states, municipalities, and health systems across the country to literally buy up medical debt for pennies on the dollar and pay it off.

The nonprofit organization, based in New York, was founded in 2014 by former debt collectors who wanted to be part of a solution to the

devastating problem they saw on the collection side. Over the last decade, the nonprofit says it has erased more than $12 billion in debt for over 7 million families. Every one dollar donated erases an average $100 in debt, according to the nonprofit.

Orange County commissioners gave initial approval to a $4.5 million investment in the initiative in February, which would be funded entirely by unspent federal dollars received by the county through the American Rescue Plan Act.

According to county documents, that $4.5 million would be capable of abolishing an estimated $424 million of medical debt for approximately 154,593 eligible Orange County residents.

As part of the project outline already drawn up by county staff, those who have their medical debt cleared would be notified by the nonprofit that their debt had been cleared (through an investment by the county). According to Undue Medical Debt, residents would also be notified that their negative credit marks associated with the debt would be removed.

In addition, according to county documents, the nonprofit would also include information on “how to access hospital charity care, no-cost or low-cost medical care, and no-cost financial assistance,” as part of a mitigation strategy to help prevent future debt issues.

Central Florida Jobs With Justice, a coalition of labor, faith and advocacy groups, first brought this idea to Orange County commissioners as a community initiative. Orange County residents also shared their own stories about how medical debt impacts them personally.

“When I think of a life without medical debt, I don’t think of buying a fancy car or going out to a nice restaurant,” wrote local resident and Central Florida Jobs With Justice volunteer Eimar Roy, in a recent op-ed for Orlando Weekly in support of the initiative.

“I think about the people who have swiped their card for me at the grocery store when my transaction was declined, and I think about paying it forward,” continued Roy, who struggled during the COVID-19 pandemic after she became unemployed and later contracted COVID-19, exacerbating pre-existing medical conditions. “I think about how much more present I could be for all the beauty and goodness this life has

to offer if my mind weren’t constantly ravaged with worry about my house being foreclosed.”

But, despite the fact that states like Connecticut and New Jersey and municipalities including Cook County, Chicago and New Orleans have already worked with Undue Medical Debt on similar initiatives for their own communities, both Wilson and commissioner Mayra Uribe hesitated on making a final decision.

The nonprofit’s process of actually buying up and abolishing residents’ medical debt involves directly buying the debt from hospital systems and other healthcare providers. Two major local hospital systems — Orlando Health and AdventHealth — have already indicated they’re willing to participate, according to the county.

But both Uribe and Wilson expressed concern over whether this process will help people whose debt has already been sent to collections, and what the initiative can realistically accomplish.

“Those debts have already been sold,” said Wilson. “People who are getting notices now get them from a third party provider. It’s off the books of Advent Health and Orlando Health.”

County administrator Warren Lakhan, who provided a presentation to commissioners on the initiative Tuesday, sought to relieve her concerns, sharing that hospital systems often still hold this debt, but Wilson felt she didn’t have enough information from the nonprofit they’d be partnering with to make an informed decision.

Commissioners Uribe and Mike Scott, who has himself struggled with medical debt in the past, similarly questioned whether this investment would live up to its promise, or just serve as a stopgap solution to help a limited pool of people.

Medical debt is a widespread problem, as the leading cause of bankruptcy in the United States.

A KFF analysis found that four in ten U.S. adults report having debt due to medical or dental bills, with Black and Hispanic households disproportionately impacted.

One in four adults also say that in the past 12 months they have skipped or postponed getting health care they needed because of the cost.

While over 90 percent of the U.S. population has some form of health insurance, insurance coverage alone can be insufficient to cover the cost of a major medical procedure, treatment for cancer or chronic illness. The U.S., to date,

is the only industrialized country that doesn’t guarantee health care for its citizens through universal healthcare coverage.

Representatives of Undue Medical Debt have openly admitted that clearing people’s medical debt won’t necessarily prevent future troubles with medical bills, or other affordability issues. “What we do doesn’t solve the problem, but it removes some of the burden,” Allison Sesso, the nonprofit’s president and CEO, recently told The Guardian, after a study was released indicating that the impact of clearing medical debt may be limited.

A medical debt cancellation program in Orange County would be fairly simple for residents, at the very least. There would be no application process necessary to have debt cleared, thereby removing any concern about ensuring those most burdened by debt are made aware of the program. By working with hospital systems, Undue Medical Debt would instead be able to identify those who owe debt, clear it, and notify those individuals after. Those who qualify would include individuals who have experienced negative economic impacts caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, and those who are low income (living in a household with income at or below 400% of the federal poverty line) or who have medical debt that equals or exceeds 5 percent of their total household income.

For reference, 400 percent of the Federal Poverty Line in 2024 is $60,240 for a single-person household, or $103,280 for a household of three.

The proposed program in Orange County would be a two-year project lasting through Sept. 30, 2026, if approved, overseen by the Orange County Comptroller’s Office and the Community and Family Services Department.

Ultimately, the board of county commissioners opted to delay a final vote of approval on the $4.5 million agreement with Undue Medical Debt on Tuesday, in order to get more information to address commissioners’ concerns. Mayor Jerry Demings seemed unenthusiastic about the delay, but was receptive to his fellow board members’ concerns. “It’s not that we don’t support the medical debt relief program. What we want to make certain is that the individuals who are COVID-impacted have a positive outcome with their credit score, and that the debt is indeed relieved.”

Central Florida Jobs With Justice, which initially pushed for a $8.7 million investment from the county to clear an estimated $827 million in medical debt for 300,000 local residents, did not immediately respond to our request for comment on the delayed vote.

There was no clarification from the board on when a final vote might take place. Orange County, which received a total $270.8 million in funds through ARPA, had about $23 million left to allocate as of February, with a limited amount of time to do so. Under spending rules, the county has to have all of their funding financially obligated by the end of 2024, and make sure it’s fully spent by the end of 2026.

Orlando Out Fest canceled after Fringe ArtSpace is flooded; Lightup Shoebox carries the banner for genderqueer theater this

anywhere, with any budget, without having to depend on gigantic production values,” says Levi. “We can just make magic in a light-up shoe box.”

They say that you can’t make a rainbow without some rain, but as Orlando’s arts community wraps up its Pride Month celebrations this weekend, we’re seeing that when it rains, it pours — literally. This week, I was hoping to tell you about Orlando Fringe’s first-ever Orlando Out Fest (OOF), which was scheduled for June 27-30 at ArtSpace. Unfortunately, a succession of ruptured chiller pipes severely flooded the Church Street venue, forcing the relocation of last week’s Latin American Festival of Performing Arts (FLAE) to Trinity Prep, as well as the indefinite postponement of OOF.

“Although we are very sad that we have to postpone this festival until a later date, trust me that we are coming back better than ever,” says OOF producer Ciara Hannon. “After all, it’s ‘Mamma Mia, here we go again,’ not ‘Mamma Mia, here we go once.’”

Despair not, because producer-director Clark Levi’s Lightup Shoebox is still carrying the banner for genderqueer theater this weekend with their production of Moira Buffini’s rarely-seen dramedy Silence at Timucua Arts Foundation June 28-30. Levi first caught my attention early on as one of Beth Marshall Presents’ Top Teens, and since graduating from Flagler College and returning home, he’s quickly grown into one of our theater community’s most passionate voices.

Named after the shoebox-sized stage in a friend’s high school gymnasium and inspired by Peter Brook’s theatrical theory of the “empty space,” Lightup Shoebox began by producing DIY art videos during the pandemic, and launched live productions as COVID eased. “I went with this idea of, we can make artistic magic

Among the magic Levi’s Lightup Shoebox has helped make thus far were the well-received Fringe Festival shows Leviticus and Carmilla: An American Gothic. Levi and Ashley Alonso are also continuing the “Play Date” series started by Monica Tamborello and Robin Olson, which are free sessions for creatives to paint, write and “experiment with different artistic methods and mediums in a low-stress, no-stakes way,” Levi explains. “We get away from the grind culture and gig economy to just play.”

Earlier this season, Lightup Shoebox launched their first full season with the world premieres of The Audience Will Choose the Title of This Show, a participatory piece devised by a diverse group of eight interdisciplinary artists, and Ink Addicted, tattoo artist Chris Trovador’s autobiographical one-man multimedia standup. “I was always artistically attracted to his energy and how he conducted himself,” Levi says of Trovador, a fellow Orlando Fringe employee who was awarded a United Arts grant to take his show on tour.“He has that very same mindset of why I started Lightup Shoebox: ‘Let’s just make it. Let’s just get it together and do what we can with what we have.’”

While it will still be a technically bare-bones affair, Silence is by far the biggest production Levi has tackled to date as a director and producer. Levi describes the 1999 farce — about the Norman princess Ymma (Billie Jane) being forced by England’s King Ethelred (Bennett Morgan) to wed the crossgender Viking Lord Silence (fight director Hayley Sanz) — as “Monty Python meets Shakespeare meets Bridgerton meets queer sitcom.” He discovered the script in college and produced a staged reading shortly before the COVID lockdown, and says he’s

returning to it now because “it’s a very light comedy, but at the same time, it does have these themes about the doom and gloom of the Apocalypse. … It just feels increasingly relevant to where we are right now.”

Levi says he’s especially excited that Silence’s cast includes a mix of local veterans and new-to-Orlando faces, who are “people that have been ready to take on roles of this size and this dramatic heft, and haven’t always gotten the opportunity.” Billie Jane, a trans actress and repeat winner of Orlando Fringe Critics’ Choice awards, wrote that “as a kid, I would see these strong, beautiful, princesses on television or in movies and I would become so enraptured by them. Until I learned it wasn’t societally acceptable, I would always pretend to be them when playing with my friends on the playground, before ultimately having to sink back into the reality of being a prince instead. … I think especially now, all of the roles I accept and play will be significant, because I’m FINALLY getting to be the women I’ve always wanted to be.”

Finally, as producer of a nomadic theater company in a city squeezed for affordable stage space, Levi recognizes his privilege to have established relationships with venues like Oviedo’s Imagine Performing Arts Center, College Park Gallery and Timucua Arts Foundation — relationships he inherited from Jeremy Seghers. In turn, he’s passing it forward with affordable (and even free) tickets to his performances.

“I hope that more people in Central Florida are able to take those risks on going to art that might be a bit different than what they expect, [and] that there are still people that are willing to band together around supporting queer art and institutions,” Levi concludes. “I hope that we’re able to all work together and support each other, as we figure out how to do this in the new age.” skubersky@orlandoweekly.com

$35 3-COURSE PRIX FIXE MENUS JUNE 1 - JULY 7

BOILING POINT

Boiled Fish bubbles over with bold broths that bring the zing

Boiled Fish found its way into my regular restaurant rotation, and I have my endodontist to thank. Or the location of her office anyway. It sits less than a four-minute drive away, so every time I’m subject to a session of dental poking and periodontal buggering, I turn to Boiled Fish’s gorgeous bowls of boiled fish, which prove to be as palliating as a shot of Botox for my bruxism.

Easy on the teeth? You bet. The plush chunks of basa ($16.95 small; $25.95 large) or sea bass ($21.95 small; $33.95 large) teeming amid one of seven different broths pose no danger to the pearlies. The broths have one thing in common: sauerkraut. Well, it’s called “sauerkraut,” but the sour tang in the pork-based liquid actually comes from pickled mustard greens, as is custom in Chongqing and Sichuan Province. And in the case of the “lemon flavor sauerkraut fish,” there’s a citrusy zip and a scorching stab courtesy of chopped red and green chilies. It’s my new favorite soup, and I’ve enjoyed with both basa and sea bass fishies. Lolling in that zingy pool of golden fire were bean sprouts, napa cabbage, tofu, tofu skin ribbons, wide vermicelli noodles and wood ear mushrooms. Now if you saw that sticker price and winced,

it’s probably because you’re not aware of how large this “small” bowl of soup is. Two people could easily share this thing. I don’t know how many ounces the large bowl holds, but I imagine it would feed a family of four easily.

The broths are all made fresh daily by a trio of women — Christine, Lily and Lena — who also own and operate the restaurant. Christine, an expressively buoyant proprietor, suggested I try the “green pepper sauerkraut fish,” whose flavor comes not from bell peppers, but green Sichuan peppercorns. The first few bites expectedly numbed the tongue, but that’s all it really did. The monotone profile didn’t exactly lend a whole lot of flavor variety, like in the lemon soup. Or the “tomato sauerkraut fish,” for that matter — this red-hued beauty is the mildest of all the soups offered, but it arguably imparts the most comfort. The sweet, sour and impossibly luxuriant composition is hardly the dismissively “mild” option I thought it would be.

When I went back for my third and most recent visit, I noticed the menu had expanded to include a lot more items: Hunan-style stinky tofu, soup dumplings, coconut shrimp, meat and veggie skewers and scores more. Among them, superb fried gyoza ($6.95) that

surprised me with a tofu and scallion stuffing. We thought it was chicken. The bracing cucumber salad ($7.95) never disappoints, and neither does the crispy chicken ($7.95) tossed in five-spice powder. But if there’s one chicken dish to order, make it the cold chicken with chili sauce ($13.95), a Sichuan specialty that Christine insisted I try.

I never fail to temper the heat with housemade passionfruit lemonade ($6.95) and a capper of brown sugar glutinous rice cakes ($4.95). That ending may lead to yet another visit to the endodontist, but I’m not overly concerned. Not when I know it’ll also lead me back to Boiled Fish, where the soups are, in a word, toothsome.

HOT GLAZED DONUT

COUCHSURFING

premieres you won’t want to miss this week.

Premieres Wednesday:

Land of Women — To avoid the fallout of her husband’s financial improprieties, New Yorker Eva Longoria absconds to a quaint winemaking town in Spain. That sounds much more romantic than ducking a fentanyl rap by hiding out at an Amscot in Plant City. (Speaking purely hypothetically, of course.) (Apple TV+)

Worst Roommate Ever — Season 2 shares four new true-life tales of nightmare cohabitants who do weird and disturbing stuff like … well, “knocking on your bedroom door at odd hours and teasing your cats” is all we’re being told at this point, but I’m pretty sure there’s more to the story. Maybe murder? Or Bogarting the PlayStation? (Netflix)

Premieres Thursday:

The Bear — Carmy must have gotten out of

My Lady Jane — A playfully speculative series shows what would have happened had Jane Grey remained the queen of England rather than being beheaded. I dunno, that depends: Is this the timeline where she marries Cyclops, or the one where she and Magneto have hot dog fingers? (Prime Video)

The Seven Deadly Sins: Four Knights of the Apocalypse Season 1, Part 2 — New episodes of the Arthurian-cum-New-Testament anime rejoin Percival as he pursues his destiny to cause the end of the world. Apparently, all he needed to have done was record a country album. (Netflix)

Supacell — A season’s worth of drama and danger ensues when a quintet of Black Londoners suddenly develop extraordinary powers. Great, now they’re going to have to spend all their time denying that they’re taking opportunities from other, more qualified mutants. (Netflix)

That ’90s Show — Part 2 features drop-in cameos by icons of the Scrunchie decade like Lisa Loeb, Carmen Electra and Jason Mewes. Oh, and Matt Rife is going to be in there too, I guess in his ’90s form of a spermatozoa that relies heavily on crowd work. (Netflix)

Unicorn Academy Chapter 2 — The sophomore season of the hit fantasy/adventure includes nine standard episodes, a 44-minute special and a package of digital shorts, music videos and character vlogs. Now you won’t have to talk to your kids again until they’re researching grad schools. (Netflix)

Premieres Friday:

that freezer he was locked in when Season 2 ended, since Season 3 finds tempers flaring among him and his team now that their new restaurant is open to the public. Prediction: It’s all a deathbed hallucination, because he contracted hypothermia in there and a private-equity firm came along and Red Lobstered the crap out of the place. (FX on Hulu)

Breaking New Ground — Broadway titan Robert Hartwell fixes up his 200-year-old home over the course of six reality episodes. Meanwhile, the only thing most theater people own that’s 200 years old is cereal. (Max)

Drawing Closer — A hit Japanese novel becomes a romantic weeper in which a young guy who has only a year to live falls for a girl who’s been given six months. On the bright side, maybe she has a younger sister. (Netflix)

your way into high office than to stay there. Why bother with either? For a fraction of the price, you could rent a Supreme Court justice instead. (Netflix)

The Mole — Season 2 of the reboot invites 12 new contestants to root out the traitor in their midst. With NPR’s Ari Shapiro taking over as host, expect the go-to strategy to become “torturing them with David Byrne interviews until they confess.” (Netflix)

Òlòtūré: The Journey — A Nigerian reporter goes undercover to break up a human-trafficking operation. This high-tension drama series is a spinoff of the 2019 feature Òlòtūré, which in turn was inspired by the “special characters” function on your keyboard. (Netflix)

Owning Manhattan — Broker Ryan Serhant and his team try to claw their way to the top of the real-estate-reality heap by moving some of the most luxurious properties in New York. I hear there’s a place with a gold-plated toilet that’s going for $100 firm and a pack of smokes. (Netflix)

Savage Beauty — Will cosmetics magnate Don Bhengu (Dumisani Mbebe) be able to save his imperiled family business in Season 2? Or will we all be denied the luxury of strolling into Macy’s two days before our girlfriend’s birthday and announcing “I don’t care what you sell me, as long as it’s Nigerian?” (Netflix)

The Devil’s Bath — The true history of Austria in the 1700s is the impetus for a shocking tale in which a woman’s dissatisfaction with her marriage spurs her to commit horrific acts. Two centuries later, Hitler would learn the key lesson of this ugly episode: Don’t get hitched until you’ve loaded the last bullet in the chamber. (Shudder)

A Family Affair — Joey King has a lot to think about when she learns in the most disturbing way that the movie star she used to work for (Zac Efron) is sleeping with her mom (Nicole Kidman). “You mean they ask to borrow her ben wa balls?” OK, maybe the second most disturbing way. (Netflix)

Fancy Dance — Lily Gladstone of Killers of the Flower Moon plays an Indigenous woman who literally goes off the reservation to help her niece locate her missing mother. “Bold and confident,” says Harper’s Bazaar. “Hopelessly mid,” says Custer Cosplay Monthly. (Apple TV+)

Juanpis González: The People’s President — Political satire Colombian-style, with a 1 percenter discovering that it’s easier to buy

The Whirlwind — In this 12-episode political drama, a South Korean prime minister’s plan to assassinate their country’s president drives a wedge between him and his deputy. But we can get it down to eight episodes if the guy has the courage to do the right thing. (Netflix)

WondLa — Navigating an animated landscape of weird plant life and alien creatures, a teenage girl wonders if she’s the last person on Earth. Hey, every kid feels that way! Put down the phone and help your mother with the dishes! (Apple TV+)

Premieres Monday:

Star Trek: Prodigy — Season 2 of the kid-targeted animated spinoff has already been shown on FranceTV — which came as quite the surprise to the show’s creators, who hadn’t even been warned. “Yeah, don’t surprises suck?” sympathizes known Trekkie Emmanuel Macron. (Netflix)

Premieres Tuesday:

Sprint: The World’s Fastest Humans — Documentary cameras chase after some insanely committed athletes as they strive to run faster than anyone ever has before. But it’s easy when your trainer is following you with a clipboard and asking, “Excuse me, are you registered to vote in the state of Florida?” (Netflix)

THE MUSIC THAT SHE MAKES

Aussie folk singer Leah Senior performs at Judson’s Live

Gentle vocals, lush acoustic guitar chords and introspective lyrics are drifting into Orlando from across the Pacific this week, with the arrival of Australian indie-folk singer Leah Senior.

Senior performs at the Dr. Phillips Center as a co-headliner with Kairos Creature Club on Friday. She’ll be taking the stage at the venue’s new cabaret stage, Judson’s Live, an eclectic new musical chapter in the life of this usually jazz-forward venue.

The singer-songwriter toured the U.S. solo last year and opened for rock band King Gizzard & the Lizard Wizard in 2022. But this will be Senior’s first trip to Florida, where she’ll play four back-to-back shows in Jacksonville, Orlando, St. Petersburg and Gainesville.

Senior loves playing for U.S. crowds, who she can count on to match her energy by being vocal and supportive during her sets.

“I think that’s why we keep coming back, because Americans make good fans,” says Senior. Senior’s Florida stops are part of an extensive, summer-long U.S. tour that kicked off in Chicago June 15. Half of the 18 tour dates, including the

Orlando stop, will be with psychedelic Sunshine State rock group Kairos Creature Club.

An Australian folk singer and a Floridian psych group might seem an unlikely pairing, but Senior is excited to have a connection to the Florida music community through Kairos. The seeds of this touring collaboration took initial root when Senior met KCC co-founder Lena Simon at an Australian music festival.

“Being in it together with someone else, whether it’s good or bad, it just makes good camaraderie,” says Senior.

Senior describes herself as a “lyrics kind of person” who takes inspiration from folk legends like Joni Mitchell and Bridget St. John to inform her own stripped-down musical style. On her most recent album, 2023’s The Music That I Make, Senior sings about subjects ranging from the passage of time to facing musical criticism.

Since debuting in 2015, Senior has come to treat songwriting as more than just an emotional release or outlet.

Instead, she’s embraced the freedom of drawing from a bigger, sometimes more playful pool of resources.

“In the past, I would feel so much, and then I would have to sing or write about it,” she says. “Now, as I get older, it kind of feels almost like I’ll use playing music and a song to access how I’m feeling … if I’m feeling numb, music is the way to unlock my feelings.”

Senior’s tour schedule demands a break from songwriting while she’s traveling the U.S., but she’d already started work on two upcoming albums while home in Australia since her last release.

One album will be similar to the guitar-focused, introspective The Music That I Make. The other will be more like her 2020 album, The Passing Scene — more pop-inspired, buoyant and piano-forward.

Senior plans to mix material from The Music That I Make alongside deeper cuts based on audience requests for her setlists throughout this tour. She’s always gratified to meet U.S. fans who are familiar with her music.

“Every night, there’s a small group of people who have been familiar, which is super trippy for us,” says Senior. “Coming from Australia, that’s really special and cool to have people that have followed through the different albums.”

LEAH SENIOR with Kairos Creature Club

8 p.m. Friday, June 28 Judson’s Live, Dr. Phillips Center for the Performing Arts 445 S. Magnolia Ave. drphillipscenter.org $25

Senior performs alongside her partner and music collaborator, Jesse Williams, on this tour. Instead of staying in motels and eating at truck stops, for much of the trip the duo will be camping their way through the U.S.

Waking up in nature and preparing meals for herself on a camp cooker has improved Senior’s mental health on tour. She’s already had several adventures in light of her newest travel mode — including staying in a near-abandoned manor upon invitation from another band.

Possible haunted house adventures aside, connecting with other musicians — and with the communities for whom she plays — is Senior’s favorite part of touring.

“My favorite shows are the shows that feel like there’s a strong community around music, or there’s a strong culture, and you get to have a little window,” says Senior. “It’s like a little portal.”

Cavetown’s Robin Skinner talks music, inspiration and finding community as a transgender artist

“It’s always kind of been like journaling for me, just processing stuff that I’m going through or feelings I’m having,” Cavetown’s Robin Daniel Skinner ponders.“I find it easier to make sense of difficult things when I’m writing a song. I find it hard to put things into words unless it has music with it, I guess.”

The Cambridge-based multi-platinum singer-songwriter-producer has indeed found acclaim through “journaling” confessional bedroom-pop anthems of identity and heartbreak. Cavetown’s rise has been gradual, starting with the single “This Is Home” released in 2015 by a teenage Skinner through to breakout major label LP Worm Food in 2022 on Sire and high-profile gigs at Reading and Lollapalooza. Sharing whatever felt natural to him, Skinner had few expectations of fame. He explains that coming of age alongside his fans has been helpful, making his musical career feel somewhat “normal.”

“I feel really lucky to have been growing up with my audience, and feel really connected with them since the beginning,” says Skinner.

Like a timeline of his life, Skinner says that each Cavetown album is a different diary entry and a timestamp of who he is and was.

“It’s a good marker to realize that I am improving and things are changing, stuff that mattered so much to me to write an album about when I was 12 doesn’t matter anymore,” says Skinner.

Seeking emotional solace when confronting identity has been constant in Cavetown’s sonic journey, however.

“A lot of my early music is about my struggles with gender, and trying to figure out, like, what the heck is going on.” Skinner often holds transgender pride flags onstage in honor of his own personal journey to self-acceptance. The artist uses his music as a way to delve into queer struggles.

Without music, Skinner says, he doesn’t know where he’d be.

$44-$160

The shift from being awkward and shy and having few friends to meeting so many fellow transgender and nonbinary artists — “seeing people like me” — has been affirming for Skinner.

“It’s kind of healing my past self in a way,” says Skinner. “When I’m playing ‘This Is Home’ and everyone has the flags up, and people are emotional, I’m like, ‘Oh my god, I can’t believe everyone understands.’”

Skinner and Cavetown — eager to share newest EP Little Vice — are currently on a co-headlining tour with Mother Mother, set to play the Orlando Amphitheater Saturday.

Playing with Mother Mother for the first time was nerve-racking for Skinner, but they’ve become fast friends, with more touring and a collab in the works.

“They’re awesome, I’m so amazed by their harmony, they’re so tight,” Skinner enthuses. “Ryan, the lead singer, has been really nice and seems really eager to work on some music project together, maybe in time for our Canada tour next year.”

The second track on Little Vice, “Alone,” sums up how Skinner felt most of his life, contrasted with how strange it feels to be faced with thousands of fans who look up to you.

“I don’t think I’ll ever get used to that feeling, because I never grew up thinking I could hold that space,” says Skinner.“For a long time I was like,‘Oh yeah, I’m alone,’ but I was convincing myself that it was by choice. And now I’m very much not alone, and it kind of feels foreign sometimes.”

LOCAL RELEASES

With a conspicuously high per-capita output of head-turning acts, the city of Lakeland has a history of punching above its weight in Central Florida’s music landscape. Although it’s been a while since much has been heard from them, dream-pop band Spirit and the Cosmic Heart are certainly among the most noteworthy contemporaries right now. Despite their last record (2021’s Moments EP) getting a release on esteemed Tampa label New Granada Records, SATCH have been practically MIA.

“The plan was to put together a full-length album to follow, which proved to be challenging in many aspects,” says bandleader Joshua Miller. “I’ve actually canned several records over the last several years, because the process did not create the result which was desired hence the break in releasing music.”

Between these false starts and the added personal responsibility of Miller becoming a caretaker for two ailing family members, the music just wasn’t flowing. But late last year, he helped Copeland’s Aaron Marsh open new recording studio Omnipop. Through it, he found both a space and process that gave him creative traction again to finally yield new singles

Blue-esque melodies is still radiantly intact. Yet the tenor and lyrics are especially personal, refractions of Miller’s head space as he cares for two loved ones in the grip of Alzheimer’s. The result is quiet revelation that spins melancholy into beauty.

“Anosognosia” and “Pyramids” now stream everywhere.

CONCERT PICKS THIS WEEK

JMSN, Mr. Floyd Larry: There are few R&B figures today are as simultaneously iconic and iconoclastic as JMSN. He’s got the deep, natural soul to be legit with the true-school heads as well as the left-field edge for the forward-looking alternative crowd. His genius, though, lies in a career-long devotion to upending what an R&B leading man should look and sound like. (6 p.m. Friday, June 28, The Social, $22)

Un Hombre Solo, KT Kink, Draining Kiss: While maintaining the high aesthetic as usual, local club night Panic! Underground will be getting a little extra severe with their latest live showcase. NYC’s Un Hombre Solo returns for the first time since before the pandemic to unleash dark synth rigor en español with industrial and punk edge. Keeping the vibe sweet and dour will be the raw electronic experimentalism of Orlando’s KT Kink and the stern darkwave romance of Gainesville’s Draining Kiss. (9 p.m. Friday, June 28, Iron Cow, $10)

Although it’s been a while since much has been heard from them, Lakeland dreampop band Spirit and the Cosmic Heart are certainly among the most noteworthy right now — and they’ve got two new songs to remind you.

(“Anosognosia” b/w “Pyramids”), SATCH’s first fresh material in three years.

Although Spirit and the Cosmic Heart are a collaborative band, these two songs were done solely by Miller. The band’s signature — a dance of shimmering reverie and immaculate Ocean

Doxy: As a musical chameleon driven by as much wanderlust as productivity, it can be hard to keep up with Orlando’s Dee Crittenden. But of their several ongoing projects, Doxy is the psychrock act that Crittenden’s been developing over the past year. This special show unveils Doxy’s first album as a full band, a 10-track collection titled And for Today … Nothing. While the record drops on streaming platforms this very day, you won’t get the full Brian Jonestown Massacre high that you will at this live performance when Doxy plays the full album from beginning to end. Opening will be new and notable Tampa Bay psych rockers Domino Pink. It’s a whole lotta bang for no bucks. (8 p.m. Saturday, June 29, The Falcon, no cover)

Codefendants with Zeta, 430 Steps, TV Generation: With the partial involvement of NOFX’s Fat Mike, new punk-rap act Codefendants got both a good vault in initial attention but also a bit of a distraction. If anything, with a creative core that consists of indie-rap maverick Ceschi Ramos and punk singer Sam King (of San Francisco’s Get Dead), Fat Mike is the least interesting and very secondary factor in this equation. Much more interesting for this special show is that the groundbreaking pan-genre duo will be backed by none other than even more groundbreaking Latin-punk stars Zeta. Opening will be metal punks 430 Steps and street punks TV Generation. (8 p.m. Tuesday, July 2, Will’s Pub, $15) baolehuu@orlandoweekly.com

And if that isn’t enough [and if not, what kind of maniac are you?], the vamps will be doing some sort of special beer release/eldritch offering — so just go ahead and start camping out in the parking lot now. 6 p.m., Broken Strings Brewery, 1010 W. [ free will astrology ]

CANCER (June 21-July 22): You are entering a phase when you will be wise to question fixed patterns and shed age-old habits. The more excited you get about reevaluating everything you know and believe, the more likely it is that exciting new possibilities will open up for you. If you are staunchly committed to resolving longstanding confusions and instigating fresh approaches, you will launch an epic chapter of your life story. Wow! That sounds dramatic. But it’s quite factual. Here’s the kicker: You’re now in prime position to get vivid glimpses of specific successes you can accomplish between now and your birthday in 2025.

LEO (July 23-Aug. 22): How many di erent ways can you think of to ripen your spiritual wisdom? I suggest you choose two and pursue them with gleeful vigor in the coming weeks. You are primed to come into contact with streams of divine revelations that can change your life for the better. All the conditions are favorable for you to encounter teachings that will ennoble your soul and hone your highest ideals. Don’t underestimate your power to get the precise enlightenment you need.

VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22): Border collies are dogs with a herding instinct. Their urges to usher, steer and manage are strong. They will not only round up sheep and cattle, but also pigs, chickens and ostriches — and even try to herd cats. In my estimation, Virgo, border collies are your spirit creatures these days. You have a special inclination and talent to be a good shepherd. So use your aptitude with flair. Provide extra navigational help for people and animals who would benefit from your nurturing guidance. And remember to do the same for your own wayward impulses!

LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22): We have arrived at the midpoint of 2024. It’s check-in time. Do you recall the promises you made to yourself last January? Are you about halfway into the frontier you vowed to explore? What inspirational measures could you instigate to renew your energy and motivation for the two most important goals in your life? What would you identify as the main obstacle to your blissful success, and how could you diminish it? If you’d like to refresh your memory of the long-term predictions I made for your destiny in 2024, go here: tinyurl.com/libra2024. For 2023’s big-picture prophecies, go here: tinyurl. com/2023libra.

SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21): Scorpio-born Gary Hug was educated as a machinist and food scientist, but for many years he has worked primarily as an amateur astronomer. Using a seven-foot telescope he built in the backyard of his home, he has discovered a comet and

300 asteroids, including two that may come hazardously close to Earth. Extolling the joys of being an amateur, he says he enjoys “a sense of freedom that you don’t have when you’re a professional.” In the coming weeks, Scorpio, I encourage you to explore and experiment with the joys of tasks done out of joy rather than duty. Identify the work and play that feel liberating and indulge in them lavishly.

SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21): Your power spots will be places that no one has visited or looked into for a while. Sexy secrets and missing information will be revealed to you as you nose around in situations where you supposedly should not investigate. The light at the end of the tunnel is likely to appear well before you imagined it would. Your lucky number is 8, your lucky color is black and your lucky emotion is the surprise of discovery. My advice: Call on your memory to serve you in amazing ways; use it as a superpower.

CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19): Happy Unbirthday, Capricorn! It’s time to celebrate the season halfway between your last birthday and your next. I hope you will give yourself a fun gift every day for at least the next seven days. Fourteen days would be even better. See if you can coax friends and allies to also shower you with amusing blessings. Tell them your astrologer said that would be a very good idea. Now here’s an unbirthday favor from me: I promise that between now and January 2025, you will create healing changes in your relationship with your job and with work in general.

AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18): While sleeping, my Aquarian friend Janelle dreamed that she and her family lived in a cabin in the woods. When dusk was falling, a strange animal put its face against the main window. Was it a bear? A mountain lion? Her family freaked out and hid in a back bedroom. But Janelle stayed to investigate. Looking closely, she saw the creature was a deer. She opened up the window and spoke to it, saying, “What can I do for you?” The deer, who was a talking deer, said, “I want to give you and your family a gift. See this necklace I’m wearing? It has a magic ruby that will heal a health problem for everyone who touches it.” Janelle managed to remove the necklace, whereupon the deer wandered away and she woke up from the dream. During subsequent weeks, welcome changes occurred in her waking life. She and three of her family members lost physical ailments that had been bothering them. I think this dream is a true fairy tale for you in the coming weeks, Aquarius.

PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20): A psychologist friend tells me that if we have an intense craving for

sugar, it may be a sign that deeper emotional needs are going unmet. I see merit in her theory. But here’s a caveat. What if we are currently not in position to get our deeper emotional needs met? What if there is at least temporarily some barrier to achieving that lovely goal? Would it be wrong to seek a partial quenching of our soul cravings by communing with fudge brownies, peach pie and crème brûlée? I don’t think it would be wrong. On the contrary. It might be an e ective way to tide ourselves over until more profound gratification is available. But now here’s the good news, Pisces: I suspect more profound gratification will be available sooner than you imagine.

ARIES (March 21-April 19): This may sound weird, but I think now is a perfect time to acquire a fresh problem. Not just any old boring problem, of course. Rather, I’m hoping you will carefully ponder what kind of dilemma would be most educational for you — which riddle might challenge you to grow in ways you need to. Here’s another reason you should be proactive about hunting down a juicy challenge: Doing so will ensure that you won’t attract mediocre, meaningless problems.

TAURUS (April 20-May 20): Now is an excellent time to start learning a new language or to increase your proficiency in your native tongue. Or both. It’s also a favorable phase to enrich your communication skills and acquire resources that will help you do that. Would you like to enhance your ability to cultivate friendships and influence people? Are you interested in becoming more persuasive, articulate and expressive? If so, Taurus, attend to these self-improvement tasks with graceful intensity. Life will conspire benevolently on your behalf if you do. (PS: I’m not implying you’re weak in any of these departments; just that now is a favorable time to boost your capacities.)

GEMINI (May 21-June 20): Barbara Sher and Barbara Smith wrote the book *I Could Do Anything If I Only Knew What It Was: How to Discover What You Really Want and How to Get It*. I invite you to think and feel deeply about this theme during the coming months. In my experience with Geminis, you are often so versatile and multi-faceted that it can be challenging to focus on just one or two of your various callings. And that may confuse your ability to know what you want more than anything else. But here’s the good news. You may soon enjoy a grace period when you feel really good about devoting yourself to one goal more than any other.

Siobhan (A543169) is a sweet and energetic 6-year-old dog that has been at the shelter now for over 105 days, making her officially our longest resident. She can be shy, but once she gets to know you, she can also be protective. She loves to cuddle, play fetch and run around our play yards. At the shelter she hasn’t done well with other dogs, but we are working with her on that. We celebrated her birthday recently and hosted a pool party adoption day for her, but sadly, no takers. We’re hoping to get her seen, and get her home.

As a small token of appreciation, Orange County Animal Services hopes to bring joy to local heroes by waiving adoption fees. As a thank you to those who have served, veterans can adopt pets for free. Please bring your Military ID or a copy of your DD Form 214 with honorable discharge.

Orange County Animal Services is located at 2769 Conroy Road in Orlando, near the Mall at Millenia. The shelter is open 10 a.m.-6 p.m. every day except Wednesday, when it’s open 2-6 p.m. For more information, please call 407-836-3111 or visit ocnetpets.com.
