‘We are each other’s shelter’: Why canceling medical debt matters in Florida
Floridians are being crushed by the soaring cost of living. Our energy bills are some of the most expensive in the nation, while our housing prices continue to grow year over year. Florida ranks in the top half of the U.S. for income inequality, which means that the rich are even richer and the poor even poorer in the Sunshine State.
Florida ranks fourth in the nation for healthcare costs, and one in four non-elderly Floridians have medical debt. I am one of them.
Medical debt impacts all areas of my life. I have to choose between paying my energy bills or ignoring past-due medical payments. I haven’t taken my cardiac medicine in weeks because I need to put food on the table for my children.
I moved here from Ireland, which was emerging from the aftermath of a time of great oppression, with the hope that the United States would provide opportunities for work, freedom and maybe even some ease for myself and my family. The huge optimism and drive of Americans is what attracted us, like many immigrants before us.
However, in recent years, I’ve felt crippled by the injustices my family experienced and the neglect of our state and federal government.
Knowing I have debt makes me much less likely to seek care, which means that small health ailments often go ignored until they turn into much bigger, more costly chronic issues. People with medical debt often face debt in other areas of their lives. Among individuals reporting medical debt in the past year, 56% said they have credit card debt, 33% reported owing student loans, and 35% said they were unable to afford basic necessities such as food, heat and housing, according to a 2016 report from independent policy research organization KFF.
I know the feeling. Too many of us do.
I’m Irish, which means I speak my mind. I speak up when I witness injustices — not just for myself but for the good of my community. Fed up with the increasingly insurmountable medical debt my family was accruing, I organized with Central Florida Jobs With Justice and a group of community members to demand that Orange County relieve millions of medical debt for its residents.
The county had more than $23 million in uncommitted American Rescue Plan Act funds, with over $8.7 million eligible for
debt forgiveness. In response to our organizing and pressure on the commission, we were able to get them to commit $4.5 million in ARPA funds, which will clear upward of 100,000 eligible residents (i.e., those over 400% of federal poverty guidelines) of their medical debt.
While this is a huge relief for these community members, it’s not enough. The county will have to pick and choose who is the most in need of these funds, and because my family is on the higher end of the federal poverty qualifications, we likely won’t be part of debt relief. However, the county commission can clear medical debt for triple that number of Orange County residents, myself and my family included, by pledging the remaining funds.
When I think of a life without medical debt, I don’t think of buying a fancy car or going out to a nice restaurant. I think about the people who have swiped their card for me at the grocery store when my transaction was declined, and I think about paying it forward. I think about how much more present I could be for all the beauty and goodness this life has to offer if my mind weren’t constantly ravaged with worry about my house being foreclosed.
Medical debt has prevented me from visiting my family for far too long; I think about going back to Ireland to see my dying dad one last time, to let him know that I’m still carrying on his fighting spirit and that his tenacity is being carried through to future generations.
Floridians should have the freedom to pay for the care they need and put food on the table for their families. Working people deserve the right to provide for their families and take care of their health and security. Orange County has the opportunity to forgive medical debt for nearly 200,000 community members if it pledges the remaining $4.2 million to medical debt erasure.
In Ireland, there’s a proverb: “Under the shelter of each other, people survive (Ar scáth a chéile a mhaireann na daoine).” It is the core of my belief system around community and equity, because when we do more for others — it uplifts us all.
Urge your commissioners to invest in the health, well-being and financial security of community members by investing the remaining ARPA funds in its community.

Local hospitality workers tout union protections, DeSantis signs bills banning DEI and woke meat, state authorizes universities to use ‘any means necessary’ to protect commencement and other news you may have missed.

» Disney Springs restaurant workers launch new organizing drive
Nonunion restaurant workers at five Disney Springs restaurants owned by Delaware North (operated by the Patina Restaurant Group) announced last week that they’re organizing with Unite Here Local 737, a labor union that represents roughly 18,000 workers at Disney World. While tens of thousands of Disney World employees have been unionized for decades, these subcontracted workers do not have union representation, nor do they have some of the benefits that their Disney counterparts have seen through unionization, such as paid sick leave, more full-time job opportunities, and comparatively higher wages. The restaurants where workers are organizing include Maria & Enzo’s, Enzo’s Hideaway, Morimoto Asia, The Edison and Pizza Ponte. One bartender/server at The Edison told Orlando Weekly that many of his co-workers are opposed to the unionization effort. However, the union (and restaurant workers who spoke to the press last week) say that a majority of the 300-plus employees of the five restaurants have signed cards signaling they’re on board with unionizing. We’ll keep you posted on developments.
» On International Workers’ Day, local hotel workers announce goal to raise industry standards
Last Wednesday on May 1 — celebrated in many countries as International Workers Day — local hotel workers unionized with Unite Here held a rally to formally announce what they plan to bring to the bargaining table this year as they head into contract negotiations with their employer, Hilton Hotels. Two union contracts covering workers at Hilton Buena Vista Palace and the DoubleTree near Universal Orlando are expiring on Dec. 31 — and workers say they want to use their leverage to raise not only pay and benefit standards for themselves, but for all of Central Florida’s 300,000 hospitality workers. By negotiating good contracts for themselves, they hope this will pressure their hotels’ competitors to similarly keep up. Key issues on the minds of these hotel workers include raising minimum wage standards, fighting for a better pension and more affordable healthcare, reducing the “back-breaking” workload of housekeepers, and ending what they call the “exploitation” of nonunion temporary workers hired by their hotels’ management. “I’m fighting for myself and my co-workers,” said Curtis Freeman, a DoubleTree Universal employee of 29 years who’s struggling to keep up with his family’s monthly healthcare premiums. “We’re doing this together to achieve what we rightfully deserve as working-class people.”
» Florida tells universities to take ‘any steps necessary’ to prevent proPalestine protests
Following the arrests of pro-Palestine protesters at Florida universities, the state authorized public universities to take “any steps necessary” to make sure that commencement ceremonies were not canceled or modified because of protests. Meanwhile, DeSantis said student protesters who do not follow the rules will be expelled. “We do not allow the inmates to run the asylum in the state of Florida,” he said at a press conference. Police have arrested more than 20 people holding demonstrations in solidarity with Gaza at the University of Florida, the University of South Florida and Florida State University. The arrests started taking place after the protesters erected tents on the campuses, and at around 5:20 p.m. last Tuesday, police deployed tear gas at USF in Tampa, according to the Tampa Bay Times. Pro-Palestine protests have also taken place at UCF and the University of North Florida in Jacksonville. FSU suspended the five people arrested from campus, and three who were set to graduate were told they would not be allowed to walk at their graduation ceremony, according to a press release from Tallahassee Students for a Democratic Society.
» DeSantis signs bill banning sales of lab-grown meat
Gov. Ron DeSantis signed legislation last Wednesday banning cultivated or lab-grown meat in Florida, calling it part of a conspiracy by “global elites” to destroy agriculture in the interests of fighting climate change. (DeSantis might easily be considered part of the elite himself, as a Yale- and Harvard Law School-educated governor of the third-largest American state who frequently travels by executive jet.) The bill (SB 1084) does a number of things, including making it “unlawful for any person to manufacture for sale, sell, hold or offer for sale, or distribute cultivated meat in this state,” punishable by up to 60 days in jail. Food establishments that sell or serve the stuff are also subject to penalties including loss of commercial licenses. The law defines “cultured meat” as “any meat or food product produced from cultured animal cells.” The USDA began authorizing its sale in the U.S. last June.
» DeSantis signs another bill prohibiting ‘indoctrination’ in classrooms
Gov. Ron DeSantis last Thursday signed a bill to prevent “indoctrination” in teacher-training programs. The bill (HB 1291), effective July 1, reportedly seeks to prevent “identity politics” from being included in teacher-preparation programs at colleges and universities. The Southern Poverty Law Center issued a statement criticizing it as an “effort to silence educational programs that teach empathy and respect for all.” Under the bill, teacher-preparation programs cannot “include a curriculum or instruction that teaches identity politics.” The bill includes ties to a 2022 law that restricts the way various race-related concepts can be taught in schools — a law that DeSantis dubbed the Stop WOKE Act. This year’s measure seeks to prevent teacher-preparation programs from being “based on theories that systemic racism, sexism, oppression and privilege are inherent in the institutions of the United States and were created to maintain social, political, and economic inequities.” The bill also will apply to programs that prepare school leaders such as principals for their roles.
» DeSantis balks at Air Force proposal
Gov. Ron DeSantis last Friday objected to a proposal by the U.S. Air Force that would transfer a Florida Air National Guard squadron to the U.S. Space Force. DeSantis sent a letter to leaders of the U.S. Senate Armed Services Committee, the U.S. House Armed Services Committee and Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin saying such proposals need the approval of governors. “If adopted, the proposal would flout more than a century of precedent and undermine federal law protections for state control of their National Guard,” DeSantis wrote. The Air Force’s legislative proposal has raised questions since it was submitted on March 19. The proposal also came as state lawmakers have requested that Congress increase the allowed size of the Florida National Guard from 12,000 members, the cap in place for several decades. In addition to National Guard members providing assistance with hurricanes and being deployed overseas, about 1,000 guard members were deployed by DeSantis this year to assist Texas at the southern border. Also, about 300 guard members have been helping make up for vacant positions in the state prison system.

Orlando abortion clinics grapple with Florida’s new six-week abortion ban
BY MCKENNA SCHUELER
It’s 10 a.m. on a Wednesday morning and already 80 degrees outside. It’s May 1, 2024, which for some, is celebrated as International Workers’ Day. In Florida, it’s also the day that a six-week abortion ban, on hold for over a year, finally takes effect.
Outside a private abortion clinic just south of downtown, it’s quiet at first. The first round of patients that the Center of Orlando for Women sees generally arrive and enter the clinic at 9 a.m. More appointments are usually scheduled for early afternoon.
Four men group outside the clinic, standing on the sidewalk or sitting in the shade on the outskirts of the clinic’s property in lawn chairs. They have a large umbrella set up and anti-abortion literature in hand. This literature includes a pamphlet for a nearby crisis pregnancy center that advertises “abortion consultation.”
This so-called crisis pregnancy center, Choices,
is not a licensed medical clinic, according to state records. While it does have licensed medical professionals on staff, it does not provide abortion care, and it is religiously affiliated. It offers free services like STD testing and pregnancy tests.
The nonprofit’s goal, according to a website they set up for donors, is to “CHANGE abortion in Orlando. Until there are ZERO.”
The Center of Orlando for Women, meanwhile, is one of two licensed abortion clinics in Orlando, and one of 51 across the state of Florida, which has for years remained an access point not only for pregnant Floridians seeking to terminate their pregnancies, but for pregnant people in other neighboring states where abortion care is less accessible.
The Center is visited nearly every day by anti-abortion advocates, who generally balk at the term “protester.” One of them, John Barros — who visited the clinic nearly every weekday
About 26 years later, as Orlando Weekly and a news team from Spectrum News 13 are at the clinic reporting on Florida’s newly effective sixweek ban, one of the anti-abortion activists picks up a bullhorn.
A young man, sweating in Florida’s 80-degree May 1 morning heat, shouts into a device, describing the clinic as “Hell,” comparing the clinic to concentration camps. “They delight in the death of the innocent,” he projects, his bullhorn directed squarely at the clinic’s doors.
Betty and several other clinic escorts spring into action, turning on a boombox blasting contemporary pop music and using noisemakers such as bells to block out the words.
The clinic sometimes hires off-duty Orlando police officers to park their cruisers outside the clinic to keep an eye on things. But off-duty rates for officers are expensive. On Wednesday, there’s no police cruiser in sight.
TJ, one of the other men sitting outside the clinic in a lawn chair, tells Orlando Weekly that he’s been coming out there for seven years, currently two days a week. He says his mission is to help women “choose life” and “to bring hope in a dark spot.”
“We know there are resources and people that can help them,” he said, a bullhorn plastered with an “Abortion Is Murder” sticker laid out in the grass at his side.
A 2023 analysis by the Economic Policy Institute found that in states with tighter abortion restrictions, including Florida, working families have weaker economic rights and less supportive infrastructure in place.
for roughly 20 years — passed away on Feb. 15. His death has, if anything, strengthened his allies’ resolve to continue to show up.
Betty, a volunteer clinic escort and abortion rights advocate who formed a group to help stand guard outside of the clinic, says things have been mostly the same lately. She formed the group, Stand With Abortion Now, after the U.S. Supreme Court’s Dobbs decision overturned the federal constitutional right to abortion in 2022.
The group raised nearly $200,000 for the clinic last August, after it was issued a hefty fine by the state for violating a separate Florida law that requires patients to attend two appointments with an abortion provider, 24 hours apart, in order to lawfully terminate a pregnancy.
Staff at the Center of Orlando for Women themselves have declined to talk to the press on multiple occasions.
Its founder, James Pendergraft, who no longer owns the clinic, was a controversial guy — reportedly, he would hand out condoms at local nightclubs advertising the clinic and offer $50 off coupons for abortions performed on Sundays. Pendergraft, a Black doctor who grew up in Chapel Hill, N.C., built a reputation back in the day for providing late-term abortions when it was still legal.“Abortion is a right for women,” Pendergraft told Orlando Weekly in 1998, when abortion in Florida was still legal up to 28 weeks of pregnancy. “It is something to be taken seriously. It is a constitutional right.”
These states have lower minimum wages, lower rates of Medicaid expansion, a higher incarceration rate, and fewer unemployed people successfully accessing unemployment insurance.
Winnie, a clinic escort who has a good relationship with staff at the abortion clinic, told Orlando Weekly that the clinic believes it has the resources to remain open at least through the fall. It’s also considering an expansion of its services, to offer mammograms and birth control in addition to abortion procedures.
“It’s obviously devastating,” Winnie said of Florida’s new six-week ban. “But we’re OK,” she added. “We’re going to keep optimistic.”
Since April 1, abortion clinics across Florida have been in overdrive, preparing for the impact of Florida’s six-week abortion ban. The six-week limit was approved by Florida’s Republicandominated state Legislature and Gov. Ron DeSantis last April, but was put on hold due to a pending lawsuit over the state’s 15-week abortion ban, approved in 2022.
The lawsuit contended that the 15-week ban violated a right to privacy clause in Florida’s state constitution. While the Florida Supreme Court has historically interpreted that clause to include the right to an abortion, in a decision released April 1 justices reversed that precedent.
The same day that the Florida Supreme Court cleared the way for an abortion rights

initiative to be placed on the statewide ballot this November, the high court also set a 30-day timer on the enactment of Florida’s six-week abortion limit.
“It was really a bifurcated, emotional situation,” admitted Barbara Zdravecky, serving as interim CEO of Planned Parenthood of Southwest and Central Florida.
Zdravecky told Orlando Weekly on Tuesday that there are no plans in place currently for clinic closures in our region. Her organization, which offers other medical, community, and educational services in addition to abortion care, oversees nine health centers, including a Planned Parenthood center in Orlando and one in Kissimmee.
That crisis pregnancy center Choices plans to open a new anti-abortion facility of its own within a mile of the Kissimmee Planned Parenthood next month.
Zdravecky said Planned Parenthood’s regional clinics extended their hours as the state’s six-week abortion ban loomed, and opened up new time slots on the weekends for procedures. “Our staff was willing to come in and see as many patients as possible,” she shared.
Planned Parenthood staff are also trying to assist patients in figuring out where they can go if they’re too far along to legally terminate their pregnancy in Florida.
There’s a legal helpline at reprolegalhelpline. org and information on PlanCPills.org for how to access abortion medication. Abortion funds like the Florida Access Network and Tampa Bay Abortion Fund have also sought to help pregnant people access financial assistance to both obtain and travel for abortion care out of state.
The Tampa Bay Abortion Fund, which assisted more than 2,600 people last year, announced earlier this week they’ve had to close their phone lines, but can still provide funding assistance through partnerships with clinics in the Tampa Bay region.
Outside of Florida, the closest state for a pregnant person to access abortion care is North Carolina, where abortion is legal up to 12 weeks of pregnancy, or Virginia, where it’s legal for the first two trimesters.
Under Florida’s new six-week abortion law, there’s an exception for survivors of rape, incest or human trafficking, allowing them to access abortion until 15 weeks of pregnancy.
But there’s a catch. To do so, the law mandates the person provide a copy of a restraining order, a police report, medical records or other documentation at their appointment with an abortion provider.
Opponents of the law say most people don’t even know they’re pregnant before six weeks of pregnancy, and that many survivors of rape, incest or trafficking won’t have the documentation needed to prove they deserve access to an abortion procedure.
“Doctors strongly oppose this nearly total ban on abortion and are gravely concerned about
the impact it will have on our patients’ freedom, health, and very lives,” Dr. Chelsea Daniels, a Miami family medicine physician, abortion provider, and member of the national Committee to Protect Health Care’s Reproductive Freedom Taskforce said in a statement last Wednesday.
“Like most Floridians, we don’t want government interfering in personal medical decisions,” Daniels continued. “When these private decisions are made by politicians instead of patients and their doctors, patients’ lives are put on the line.”
Florida state Democrats have blamed Florida’s six-week ban on Republican politicians like former President Donald Trump — who’s now running for a second term in office — and Gov. Ron DeSantis.
Nikki Fried, head of the Florida Democratic Party, said in a statement last week that Trump “cleared the way for the Supreme Court to overturn Roe v. Wade,” thus “creating a nationwide health care crisis that has already put women’s lives at risk and taken away fundamental rights from millions of women in Florida and across the country.”
Zdravecky, with Planned Parenthood, said they’ve reduced the cost of birth control through their clinics to $9 and are working with others in the community to make emergency contraception more accessible, especially for younger people.
“This is a new situation, a tragic situation for our staff to be in, who are used to taking care of our patients as they present themselves,” said Zdravecky.“Turning folks away is not something that we are accustomed to.”
TJ, the anti-abortion guy sitting outside the Orlando abortion clinic on Wednesday, said he personally wasn’t satisfied with the six-week abortion limit, and doesn’t identify himself with the wing of the “pro-life movement” that is.
“I think there’s value and worth in everyone completely, and so I don’t ever believe that there’s a point in time where we should be able to say that we are more superior than these human beings.”
Human beings, in his view, include bundles of cells, embryos and fetuses that are not human beings for quite some time throughout the stages of pregnancy, according to, well, science.
In 2023, more than 84,000 people terminated a pregnancy in Florida, according to state data. And according to the Guttmacher Institute, roughly 9,000 traveled to Florida for an abortion from out of state.
Strict abortion bans now cover the Southeast region of the U.S, Florida included.
Abortion rights advocates, however, have hope for a constitutional amendment — Amendment 4 — that will appear on the statewide ballot this November, which could enshrine the right to an abortion up to fetal viability — which is roughly 24 to 28 weeks of pregnancy.
“As this cruel, dangerous ban takes effect today, it’s more important than ever that we pass Amendment 4 to prevent this and future government interference with abortion and
reproductive health care,” said Dr. Mona Mangat, a St. Petersburg immunologist who sits as Board Chair of the Committee to Protect Health Care, a national mobilization of healthcare professionals and health advocates.
“There is simply no reason for politicians to be making decisions for patients and doctors, or
Florida issues emergency rules for medical treatment amid new abortion ban
With a law now in effect preventing abortions after six weeks of pregnancy, Florida health-care regulators Thursday released emergency rules related to treating medical conditions that pose dangers to the lives of pregnant women or unborn children.
The state Agency for Health Care Administration published two rules that apply to hospitals and abortion clinics. The rules came a day after the six-week law took effect, significantly restricting abortion access in the state.
Regulators focused on certain medical conditions that might occur after six weeks of pregnancy and “can present an immediate danger to the health, safety and welfare of women and unborn children in hospitals and abortion clinics,” according to the rules.
Those conditions are “premature rupture of membranes,” commonly known as a pregnant woman’s water breaking prematurely; situations when prematurely ruptured membranes cause doctors to induce births and babies die; ectopic pregnancies; and treatment of what are known as trophoblastic tumors.
The rules involve record-keeping and reporting about the treatments. One of the rules requires hospitals to have written policies and procedures about maintaining records related to treating the conditions. It also includes directives about what must be included in policies.
As an example, the rule said that, under the hospital policies, when a woman is diagnosed with premature rupture of membranes, “the patient shall be admitted for observation unless the treating physician determines that another course of action is more medically appropriate under the circumstances to ensure the health of the mother and the unborn baby.” If doctors choose another course of action, they would have to document the reasons.
Also, both rules say that it “does not constitute an abortion” if doctors try to induce live births and babies die because of prematurely ruptured membranes. Similarly, treatment of ectopic pregnancies and trophoblastic tumors will not be considered abortions. The hospital rule would require
prosecuting doctors just for providing routine medical care,” Mangat continued. “By voting Yes on 4 in November, we can put decisions around abortion back where they belong: In the hands of Florida families and doctors, not extreme politicians.”
mschueler@orlandoweekly.com
doctors to document such treatments in patients’ medical records.
An ectopic pregnancy occurs when a fertilized egg grows outside the main cavity of a woman’s uterus. “The fertilized egg can’t survive, and the growing tissue may cause life-threatening bleeding, if left untreated,” information on the Mayo Clinic’s website said.
Trophoblastic tumors “form during abnormal pregnancies,” with some tumors malignant but the majority benign, according to information on the Cleveland Clinic website. What is known as gestational trophoblastic disease is rare, the website said.
Florida lawmakers and Gov. Ron DeSantis in 2023 approved the six-week abortion limit. But it did not take effect until last Wednesday, a month after the Florida Supreme Court upheld the constitutionality of a 15-week limit passed in 2022. The Supreme Court ruling also allowed the sixweek law to move forward.
The law includes limited exceptions for when abortions can be performed after six weeks. For instance, it would allow abortions if two physicians “certify in writing that, in reasonable medical judgment, the termination of the pregnancy is necessary to save the pregnant woman’s life or avert a serious risk of substantial and irreversible physical impairment of a major bodily function of the pregnant woman other than a psychological condition.”
But the law’s opponents have contended that the exceptions are impractical and that the six-week limit will threaten the health of women who might have a variety of medical conditions but are unable to obtain abortions.
The rules published last Thursday in the Florida Administrative Register pushed back against opponents, citing “disinformation.”
“The Agency (for Health Care Administration) finds there is an immediate danger to the health, safety, and welfare of pregnant women and babies due to a deeply dishonest scare campaign and disinformation being perpetuated by the media, the Biden Administration, and advocacy groups to misrepresent the Heartbeat Protection Act (the six-week law) and the state’s efforts to protect life, moms, and families,” the rules said.

Local art collective Psych Cat turns Casselberry Sculpture House into a fantastical wonderland

Already well-established as a hotbed for adventurous Orlando art, the Casselberry Art and Sculpture House complex will soon host perhaps its most adventurous vision yet.
Local arts collective Psych Cat — who have been putting on multimedia happenings since 2016, signal-boosting local creativity through a prism of mystique — will be weaving their mysterious and immersive magic at the Sculpture House through August with Unknown Forest.
With a title that brings to mind The Cure at their most enigmatically opaque, Unknown Forest brings together works from Leo Cordovi, Caitlen Lyberg, Sapphire Servellon and Scott White, as well as the collaborative “Toad Venom Pond” installation.
“Psych Cat as a collective bases all of its showcases within the set theme and the styles of each specific artist. We never ask the artist to make something outside of their practice but rather we find the connecting point of everyone’s work,” explains curator Servellon of their working methods to foster creativity. “Caitlen Lyberg got her

BFA in sculpture from Kent State University, and Scott White’s — a local legend — installation works are beyond compare!”
Less the usual group exhibition and more an attempt to resculpt gallerygoers’ perception of reality — if only for a few moments — Psych Cat’s ambitious brief is to create “a fantastical land of psychedelic joy and petrifying uncertainty.” The participating cats are up to the task, working in a variety of mediums, from paintings to immersive multimedia.
“Close to Touch” by Caitlen Lyberg suggests disembodied hands pulling endless puppet strings — very adroitly capturing a stormtossed sense of helplessness circa the now. Acrylic work by Leo Cordovi evokes the theme of nature’s mysteries with appropriate visceral foreboding: light peeking between painfully stripped branches looks more like rivers of blood than comforting warmth. “The God of Life and Death Is a Doe Lost in the Snow” by Servellon provides a momentary — though disorienting — respite with a cartoonish deer against an impossibly rich sunset, seemingly removing a mask with an identical face beneath? Nothing is what it seems in this forest.
The crux of this exhibition is the “Toad Venom Pond” installation, which is a product of both the collective’s fascination with the psychedelic and commitment to working together to create new worlds.
We can’t fully experience the 10-foot-by-10-foot installation that combines sound art, sculpture, paintings and careful stagecraft until the opening night on Friday, but Servellon was willing to give us a brief peep behind the ethereal curtain; the overall impression given is a heady merger of sensory-deprivation chamber and 1960s be-in, with a hint of Fluxus mischief.
“‘Toad Venom Pond’ is an immersive psychedelic decompression area with body-size lily pads for the audience to relax in. Surrounding the area are Leo Cordovi’s gorgeous forestscape paintings,” explains Servellon. “Casey Lerman of Timothy Eerie produced the music for the pond. Being a local psych-pop musician, his meditative trance sends you on a journey of the life and death of a toad.”
There is one piece of the exhibit that particularly pinged this writer’s radar, and that’s the inclusion of a zine that shares the title of the exhibition. A hybrid of stark dread and whimsy, Alexander Escobar’s zine is a travelog of wide-eyed wonder — as the spiral-eyed hero (a cat, natch) makes their way through rural landscapes, haunted by shadows, before entering a forebodingly (?) cat-shaped portal to the Unknown Forest.
“Not only do we create installations and curate exhibits, we’re a publisher! Zines have been our bread and butter since the beginning. A typical trade-off for any artist that exhibited with us is that we publish a zine for them of whatever they want and vice versa,” says Servellon. “With Alexander Escobar — creative director of SR50 magazine — also a part of this collective, he designed the comic strip of our ‘psych cat’ on a journey. Coming across an abandoned cabin, through a door he sees a path to the ‘Unknown Forest.’”
You owe it to yourself, in an increasingly fast-forward, dystopian year, to follow that feline and get delightfully lost with Psych Cat. arts@orlandoweekly.com

For Mila and Gina Makarova, working on and offstage this month on Opera Orlando’s The Juniper Tree and Orlando Ballet’s Casanova are ‘family time’
Fans of the classical arts craving something outside the familiar canon have a cornucopia to choose from in the coming weeks, thanks to Opera Orlando and the Orlando Ballet. First, Philip Glass and Robert Moran’s The Juniper Tree, an operatic adaptation of a Brothers Grimm fairy tale, comes to the Dr. Phillips’ Pugh Theater on May 10 and 11, featuring the Phantasmagoria performance troupe and original puppets by Nic Parks. Then, on May 16-19, the neighboring Steinmetz Hall hosts the U.S. premiere of U.K. choreographer Kenneth Tindall’s Casanova, as part of a collaboration between Orlando Ballet, Colorado Ballet and Milwaukee Ballet.
Either production is an enormous undertaking on its own, but one multitalented mother-daughter team is intimately involved in both. At only 26 years old, Gina Makarova has a full-time job supervising wardrobe and wigs for the Orlando Ballet, where her dancer/choreographer mother, Mila Makarova, is a longtime instructor. Both are also original members of Phantasmagoria (which I co-founded) and will be onstage together with the Opera. I recently chatted with the pair at the Ballet’s school during a brief break in their busy rehearsal schedule, to hear how they manage to balance their overlapping artistic efforts without fraying family bonds.
When I first met the Makarovas in the midaughts through my wife’s company, Voci Dance, it would have been natural to assume that the 9-year-old in the corner had been unwillingly dragged to the rehearsal hall by her mom, but the opposite was actually accurate. The Wisconsin-born child of two ballet teachers, Mila
had trained as a dancer but retired early due to injuries and was coaching elite gymnasts in Orlando when Gina dragged her back into the dance world. “She was like, ‘Mommy, I want to dance. I want to be like you, I want to be a dancer. I don’t want to go to the gym,’” recalls Mila.
“In hunting down schools, I found Orlando Ballet, and was taking some adult classes,” Mila says, when a fellow student asked Mila to accompany her to an audition for Voci, which she was invited to join. (The friend was not.) “I had been retired for 10 years, and I had no intention of performing again,” says Mila.
“I … asked and pushed to start taking dance classes, and then had to go to every rehearsal with her for Voci and started dancing in the corner until they realized ‘Oh, she can do it too, throw her on stage,’” adds Gina. “I definitely pulled her back into it.”
In addition to dance, Gina developed an interest in music, and initially studied cello at the North Carolina School of Arts before switching to wig and makeup design. She says,“About three weeks into my first semester, I internally realized that I didn’t want to be stuck in a practice room for the rest of my life.” After graduating in 2020 during the peak of the pandemic, she returned home and landed her first professional gig with Opera Orlando as an assistant on Die Fledermaus More work with them and with Orlando Ballet followed, until she joined the Ballet’s wardrobe department full-time during last year’s Nutcracker. Her responsibilities on Casanova include supervising styling of the stunning 63 hairpieces they’ve imported from overseas for the show: “Anything that involves wigs is me, and if it’s more than I can handle on my own, I bring in a team.”
Although Mila has choreographed Phantasmagoria since its first installment 15 years ago and is on her eighth show with Opera Orlando, Juniper Tree will be the first of Phantasmagoria’s three collaborations with the
Opera to feature both her and Gina (who also consults on the company’s makeup) dancing onstage together. It’s also the first to be stage-directed by Phantasmagoria’s John DiDonna. Mila says, “In this one, we are the mechanism. We are on stage 100 percent of the time, and there is a lot of dancing and puppet manipulation.”
Gina has been playing Pandora (of Greek mythology fame) in Phantasmagoria shows since she was a tween, and now says that “character-wise, Pandora and Gina don’t have too much separation anymore.” However, she says returning to the role after college felt very different. “Phantasmagoria is different. You can’t expect it to not change after 15 years, but I definitely look at everything a little bit differently as an adult than I did as a kid. … There was this period where I felt like I should be a veteran, but no one was listening to me because everyone’s still looked at me like a kid. And it’s finally starting to shift, so that’s nice,”she says. “Now, more so than when I was younger, if something isn’t working I’m not afraid to [say] ‘what if we try this,’ and sometimes we end up going with whatever I suggested, because it actually works.”
One thing that appears unchanged over the years is the pair’s lifelong love of creating art together.
“When I need an idea, I go to [Gina] first because her ideas are generally good,” Mila says. “She’s usually my first touch point [because] she knows me very, very well; she knows my strengths and my weaknesses, and she knows my instincts.”
“From the time she was 8 with those first performances with Voci, it became very clear that I would rather be on stage with her than just about anyone else, because she proved that no matter what went wrong, she could handle it and fix it,” Mila concludes. “If I have to perform with people, I prefer her to be there. This is what we do; this is like our family time.” skubersky@orlandoweekly.com

A FEATHER IN THEIR CAPS
The Drake Kitchen & Bar by Heberto and Rona Segura is the culmination of a decades-long dream
BY FAIYAZ KARA
Roger Owens, a sales consultant for multinational food distributor Sysco, recounts the day at Disney Springs when Heberto Segura told him he was leaving his cushy 10-year gig as executive chef of Raglan Road to start his own food truck. “I was like, WHAT?!? Why???” Needless to say, Heberto and his wife, Rona, made a great success out of their mobile conveyance, Duck & Drake Kitchen. It even found a permanent parking spot outside Digress Wine in College Park, as well as a permanent legion of fans. Owens, in fact, became a partner in the Drake Kitchen & Bar, the Seguras’ glass-and-concrete venture downtown. It’s a unique space with its nooks and angles and long walks through two doors and a hallway to get to the bathroom. The restaurant itself pays homage to the Duck & Drake Inn — a London pub where 13 conspiratorial Catholics, including Guy Fawkes, devised the Gunpowder Plot of 1605. The plan was to ignite 36 barrels of gunpowder beneath the House of Lords, blowing King James and his Parliament into teeny Protestant bits. So, a cocktail called the “36 Barrels” ($16) with its stiff
pour of Gunpowder Gin seemed to be in order. We figured, why not blow our livers into smithereens? But all joking aside, what really blew us away were the dishes crafted by the Seguras. On both my visits here, we started with the poofy za’atar-spiced flatbread served with a trio of delectable dips ($24) — black-eyed pea hummus with black garlic oil, tahini verde with garlic chips and, the favorite among both sets of friends, eggplant caviar with pickled peppers. When digging into a plate of prime beef meatballs ($15) deepened in flavor and color by a mushroom confit and a foie gras emulsion, or forking up a pretty mess of patatas bravas, duck egg and Lady Edison ham in garlic aioli and Calabrian chili sauce, any semblance of doubt about the concept’s mobility from humble food truck to snazzy boîte vanished. Vanished, I’d say, about as quickly as the dish dubbed “duck, duck, goose” ($35). This was another menu item I’ve enjoyed twice — three dishes presented on one plate: flaky duck strudel, aged duck breast and goose foie gras served with a spicy quince chutney. On one occasion, wilted spinach sided the
plate; on another, broccolini. Either way, I’m not ashamed to say that the pomegranate gastrique circularly drizzled around the trio of poultry perfection was finger-licked to completion.
More perfection: flash-fried Gulf Coast snapper ($27) and fried plantain with a coconut-tomato curry; citrus- and shawarma-spiced fire-roasted chicken ($32) served over a treacherous habañero pepper sauce; mushroom risotto ($20) featuring Fungi Jon’s finest; and a prime New York strip ($50). Steak isn’t something I typically gravitate toward at restaurants, but our server sang its praises and we now wholeheartedly count ourselves among the choir of aye-sayers. “This marrow soubise and shiraz gastrique under the steak!” I exclaimed to my comrades. “This is Ravenous Pig-level food,” declared the pal. “I just wish they had Ravenous Pig-level service.”
Indeed, on both visits, the lackluster service wasn’t anywhere near as refined as the food. Furthermore, our server didn’t seem to have a clue about the restaurant’s thematic connection to the Gunpowder Plot. Our question as to why the jamon Iberico de bellota was served “Serrano style” went unanswered. Serrano and Iberico are two different types of ham, so we were curious about the menu’s description. More importantly, slices of the prized pig weren’t shaved in thin strips as is customary but, rather, in thick, roughly cut portions. (It’s possible a jamon novice did the slicing on this particular night, as Heberto was tending to the food truck.)
Then there’s the issue of the very basic wine list, which will certainly disappoint the Digress crowd. That said, a just-launched “Conspirators” wine list offering a much better selection of bottles was presented to us on our last visit. Not that it’ll appease by-the-glass sippers.
Rona’s desserts, however, will appease sugar-lovers to no end. Her chocolate budino, ($12) with layers of double chocolate cream, hot coffee caramel and a crisp sesame tuile, won’t go unfinished. Neither will her pavlova de maiz ($14) with its corn-husk meringue, corn custard and brown-butter ice cream. Our lone quibble with this one was that the house-made ice cream wasn’t fully frozen.
But did we eat it all? Oh, hell yes. Like most everything The Drake serves, it went down easy, and that’s a testament to the Seguras and how their humble little food truck of global eats has grown into a fetching restaurant serving some of the best food in the downtown core.
Yeah, they started from the bottom, but now they here.

Engadget senior editor Daniel Cooper even fulminated that the arrangement was simply “mad,” given that “the bulk of the series’ funding comes from the license fee paid by the majority of TV owners in the U.K.” Gosh, it’s almost as if they’ve decided taxation without representation is bad or something. (Disney+)
Living With Leopards — Cub siblings grow to adulthood in a nature documentary narrated by wildlife expert Brad Bestelink. BROTHERS IN ARMS
No ‘Maybe’ about it, AJR means it, mannnnnn
BY ALAN SCULLEY
“This album was a lot more immediate and personal than our past albums.”
That’s how Ryan Met summed up The Maybe Man, the new album from his group, AJR. Ryan probably could add that he hopes he and his brothers, Jack and Adam, who together make up AJR, never again have to make an album under the circumstances that surrounded The Maybe Man.
“This album, the universe just threw thing after thing at us while we were writing this album over these two years,” Ryan says.“You know, losses and crazy legal troubles and a lot of other stuff. And we just decided we’re going to write about everything that happens to us as it’s happening to us and see what capturing those snapshots actually sound like. It was really difficult to do.
“But we felt like, ‘Oh, this is our job right now. This is going to help us process [things].’ It’s going to help the fans process if they ever have to go through stuff like this, to capture it as immediate and urgently as possible.”
The main event was a cancer diagnosis for Gary Metzger, the father of the sibling trio (who shortened their last names to Met for the purposes of the group). Sadly, their father succumbed to the disease in July of last year.
Their father’s illness is directly addressed on the new album in the song “God Is Really Real” to devastating effect. Just consider these lines early in the song: “I gotta leave for Paris now/My band goes on at 10/And my dad can’t get out of bed.” It’s a prime example of AJR capturing their emotions in real time.
“It happened when we were on tour and that’s when we wrote ‘God Is Really Real,’” recalls Jack Met, who joined Ryan for the interview. “We wrote it two days after … no, the next day after. He was in the hospital. We didn’t even know what his diagnosis was yet. The emotions were raw. It was about eight months until he passed, which was definitely the toughest eight months of our lives. Obviously, we think about him every day. It’s really, really tough.”
Gary Metzger had unfailingly supported his sons in their AJR venture. The brothers started out busking in New York City in 2005, and soon began writing songs.
AJR’s big break came after writing “I’m Ready,” a song the brothers felt combined their varied influences — ranging from Simon & Garfunkel

to the Beatles to hip-hop and Broadway musicals — into something unique. That song caught the attention of pop star Sia, who alerted her manager, Jonathan Daniel, to the group. Daniel, in turn, contacted Steve Greenberg, head of S-Curve Records, who signed on as AJR’s co-manager and helped the brothers start their own label. Since then, things have taken off. “I’m Ready” got regular airplay on satellite radio, and in 2016, AJR’s third EP, What Everyone’s Thinking, spawned a platinum-selling hit single in “Weak.” The band’s popularity has grown steadily since, as three subsequent full-length albums have added five more platinum singles, including the 2020 top10 hit “Bang!”
All of which brings us to The Maybe Man and the emotional challenges the Met brothers experienced while writing and recording the album. Interestingly, while their father’s ordeal is part of the story, The Maybe Man as a whole is built around a broader theme of reaching one’s late 20s and early 30s and realizing that life is getting more real and there are serious responsibilities that come with becoming a full-fledged adult. And of course, dealing with a loved one’s death will cause someone to grapple with the reality that life is short and it can end at any time.
Both Ryan and Jack feel The Maybe Man –understandably so — is the most serious AJR album yet. But as a band that has consistently created cheerful, highly catchy — and often quite innovative — songs, it’s no surprise that the latest album does not feel like a downer, especially on a musical level.
Yes, “God Is Really Real” and “Turning Out Pt. III” are melancholy ballads, and the song “Maybe Man” starts the album on a somewhat subdued, albeit pretty, note. But things brighten, as lively songs like “Yes, I’m a Mess,” “The Dumb Song,”“Hole in the Bottom of My Brain” and even “Inertia” deliver the playful, buoyant sound AJR fans have come to expect.
Now that AJR have launched an extensive tour in support of The Maybe Man, fans can expect a visually elaborate show that spans the trio’s career. This tour will take them to Orlando this very week.
“I think this arena tour is everything we’ve ever wanted to put on stage,” Ryan says. “We finally have the money and the budget to play with where we can create magical illusions and a real Broadway narrative and real cinematic CGI. I don’t want to give away too much, but [we have] a lot of crazy stuff we know you’ve never seen on stage before.”
You can see and hear it for yourselves when this band of brothers plays the Kia Center Friday. music@orlandoweekly.com

THE BEAT
I could point to the recent Grammy nomination they received last year to certify the gospel about Canadian band Alvvays, though the more indie-minded would probably know this was just another instance of the industry establishment playing catch-up. Had the Academy been paying attention like us, they would’ve given Alvvays their due flowers immediately upon the arrival of their 2014 self-titled debut album.
That LP was an instant magnum opus loaded with a rare amount of hits. All it took for me to fall in mad love with Alvvays was 57 seconds. That’s the exact moment when the chorus of single “Archie, Marry Me” explodes into one of the headiest fuzz-pop highs ever crafted. In the decade since, Alvvays have steadily proven that they’re some of the best popsmiths of their generation. All of this is to say that I’ve been waiting a long goddamn time to see this band.
But it’s been a long road for them, too. They’re coming off a tough five-year lull that entailed loss of personnel, material and gear. Now, Alvvays are back and touring behind a great return album, Blue Rev. Most importantly, they finally made their Orlando debut before a very full and enthused house (May 2, The Plaza Live). And with songs like these, the inevitable happened: an entire room swooned all at once.
In a rock concert setting, some of the lovely pop nuances of Molly Rankin’s voice were obscured, but at least it was by big gale-force guitars. With a storm of reverb and feedback that sometimes approached My Bloody Valentine standards, the live version of Alvvays plays like shoegaze for lovers.
It’s a look that underscores the brilliance of Alvvays’ formula. By taking the immaculate

melodicism of twee-pop and injecting it with towering sonics, they prove you can have your sweet Camera Obscura cake and bask in your Teenage Fanclub fuzz at the same time. It’s noisepop perfection that guarantees Alvvays’ place in the alt-pop canon.
Although only three albums deep, Alvvays’ catalog is so supernaturally stacked with smashes that this set list played like a greatest hits tour of a legacy band rather than a young band that’s still on the rise. And when they played the aforementioned “Archie, Marry Me,” it was a full-room singalong.
CONCERT PICKS THIS WEEK
Claire Vandiver, Zoya Zafar: This special double-feature event spotlights two of the city’s top young voices. Claire Vandiver blends roots and pop with an easy power that captivates even in repose. Zoya Zafar, who just released
her long-awaited debut album (Some Songs) last week, has been a cognoscenti darling for the near-mystical atmosphere of her voice. Together, they’re beacons of new Orlando music. (7 p.m. Thursday, May 9, Judson’s Live, $15)
Chat Pile, Portrayal of Guilt, Nightosphere: In music as in politics, staunch traditionalists can be a bore. And in heavy music, some of today’s best acts work between and beyond the genre lines. This bill is proof. Excellent Oklahoma band Chat Pile, a prime example, deal in a more experimental style of noise rock that balances sludgy tonnage and expansive post-punk mood. They can get requisitely nasty, but their emotionally cutting music does more than just rage. Likewise, Austin’s Portrayal of Guilt offer a forward-thinking vision of black metal that does much more than blast and screech. The music of new Missouri band Nightosphere is slowcore for heavy-music heads. Boxes are for squares. (7 p.m. Tuesday, May 14, Conduit, $20)
Cryogeyser, Deadharrie, Tidepools: Orlando promoter Ugly Orange strikes again with a tasteful lineup of bands you may not know but should. Specializing in indie rock with shoegaze tendencies, L.A. headliners Cryogeyser have a moody and melodic sound that packs the sonic horsepower to go airborne at the stomp of a pedal. Local openers Tidepools are an impressive dream-pop band who are far more under-theradar than they should be. Completing the bill is Gainesville’s Deadharrie, who play an affecting, folk-laced brand of slowcore. (8 p.m. Wednesday, May 15, Will’s Pub, $15) baolehuu@orlandoweekly.com

Lords of Acid
MAGA comes to the Abbey! And we’re hyped! Wait, come back, we’re referring to the resurgent Lords of Acid bringing their “Make Acid Great Again” tour to Orlando. And the audience for this show in all likelihood will be a study in contrasts to a rally from the right-wing messiah. See, these Belgian dancefloor sleazoids deal in a filthy, sweaty industrial-techno collision custom-
made for excess, stimulation and disco-ball scrying. The band broke out of the electro-industrial underground in the late 1980s with seminal singles “I Sit on Acid” and “Pussy” along with ridiculously OTT libertine soundtrack Lust (recently reissued, for research purposes) before making it into the overground with their actual soundtrack work for Austin Powers and Mortal Kombat (they made it werk). Founding members Praga Khan and Oliver Adams will be joined by vocalist Gigi Ricci to bring these sounds to North America for the first time in
over five years. There are going to be a lot of babysitters making bank tonight. 7 p.m., The Abbey, 100 S. Eola Drive, abbeyorlando.com, $25. — Matthew Moyer

Welcome to Rockville
If you, the discerning rock fan, can stomach the heat (or maybe rain!), the drive and any purely coincidental parallels to Woodstock ’ 99 in the air, you might as well head on up I-4 and accept your fate at Welcome to Rockville. Because the lineup this year is so absolutely maximal that we defy you to not find at least a small handful of bands that would entice you to traipse over. (This writer was tempted by the jaw-dropping inclusions of Nitzer Ebb, L7 and Helmet.) Rockville circa 2024 has swelled to include five stages and over (gulp) 150 bands crammed into four days. This year’s lineup includes Slipknot, Foo Fighters, Mötley Crüe, Insane Clown Posse, Jelly Roll, Disturbed, Limp Bizkit, Queens of the Stone Age, Judas Priest, Primus, Greta Van Fleet, Sum 41, Evanescence, O spring, Cypress Hill, Mr. Bungle and too many more to list. Expect everything to be bigger and louder. Daytona International Speedway, 1801 W. International Speedway Blvd., Daytona Beach, welcometorockville.com, $109.99-$1,199.96. — MM

Opera Orlando: The Juniper Tree
“Exquisite corpse” is the name of a game in which artists take turns creating parts of a whole, and it’s also the technique composers Philip Glass and Robert Moran used in their collaboration on the writing of this opera. Their scenes are stitched together into an, indeed, exquisite corpse based on a Grimm Brothers fairy tale and, man oh man, do the Grimms live up to their name with this grim tale. The Juniper Tree includes classic tropes like poisoned apples, magic birds, wicked stepmothers and children “red as blood, white as snow” but also includes a feast that tends more toward the Greek tragedy. That bird, though, is a perfect vehicle for Glass’ repetitive fluting vocal arpeggios and
brass punches (echoes of Akhnaten, composed two years before), while Moran’s equally modern but less immediately identifiable style, influenced by his study of 12-tone composition and Indian classical music, gives the infamous “jealousy aria” a richer complexity. Speaking of collaboration, the groups involved with Opera Orlando’s Juniper Tree are a murderer’s row of local greatness: Alterity Chamber Orchestra, Phantasmagoria and MicheLee Puppets all contribute to the sound, look and feel. (See page 19.) 7:30 p.m., Alexis & Jim Pugh Theater, Dr. Phillips Center for the Performing Arts, 445 S. Magnolia Ave., $49-$89, operaorlando.org. — Jessica Bryce Young

Popular local speaker series Nerd Nite fosters the next generation of (Ogre voice) nnnnneeeeeerrrrrrdddsss this weekend at Nerd Nite: Next Gen. The series just celebrated 11 years of events back in March alongside the publication of the anthology How to Win Friends and Influence Fungi, and is now branching out to foster a younger generation. The form is the same: Each speaker gets 15 minutes to speak on whatever subject fits their fancy, followed by a Q&A. These nights tend toward the freewheeling and eclectic; Lake Highland student Katie Mathews hosts this afternoon of all-teenage subject experts. The day will also include trivia and contests. Audubon’s Annual Baby Owl Shower
Spring is in full swing, which, at the Audubon Center for Birds of Prey, means baby owl season. The Central Florida avian-focused organization hosts its annual Baby Owl Shower this month, featuring a family-friendly fundraiser and educational event. At the Audubon Center in Maitland, guests will be able to dive into crafts, games, a ra e and visit with some of the center’s very own ambassador birds. Audubon Center says spring, also known as baby season, is their busiest time of the year, sometimes bringing in more than 100 young birds in the month of May alone. This event is aimed at helping

Scowl
Popular California hardcore band Scowl — singer Kat Moss, guitarists Malachi Greene and Mikey Bifolco, bassist Bailey Lupo and drummer Cole Gilbert — charge into Orlando in solidarity with Palestine for a benefit show at Will’s Pub before a sultry summer of shows all over the country. Scowl released their superlative EP Psychic Dance Routine last April on Flatspot Records. The forceful and lively opening track, “Shot Down,” seamlessly blends elements of hardcore, grunge, punk rock and indie-pop with engaging shifts in tempo and intensity. Starting strong with confrontational guitar ri s and serious screams, Moss’ vocals then shift softly into melodic musings of defiance, disappointment and rejection: “I wanna freak out/Don’t wanna let down/I wanna impress/impressive sound/I’m getting shot down, show down with you.” Come out and support, as this is Scowl’s only Florida date. Miracle and Orlando’s own Watts open the show. 4 p.m., Will’s Pub, 1042 N. Mills Ave., willspub.org, $20-$25. — Nicolette Shurba

TAURUS (April 20-May 20): Keizoku wa chikara nari is a Japanese proverb that means “To continue is power.” I propose you make that your motto for the next four weeks. Everything you need to happen and all the resources you need to attract will come your way as long as your overarching intention is perseverance. This is always a key principle for you Tauruses, but especially now. If you can keep going, if you can overcome your urges to quit your devotions, you will gain a permanent invigoration of your willpower.
GEMINI (May 21-June 20): Do you believe there are divine beings, animal spirits and departed ancestors who are willing and able to help us? If not, you may want to skip this horoscope. I won’t be upset if you feel that way. But if you do harbor such views, as I do, I’m pleased to tell you that they will be extra available for you in the coming weeks. Remember one of the key rules about their behavior: They love to be asked for assistance; they adore it when you express your desires for them to bring you specific blessings and insights. Reach out, Gemini! Call on them.
CANCER (June 21-July 22): I’m taking a gamble here as I advise you to experiment with the counsel of visionary poet and painter William Blake (1757–1825). It’s a gamble because I’m asking you to exert a measure of caution as you explore his daring, unruly advice. Be simultaneously prudent and ebullient, Cancerian. Be discerning and wild. Be watchful and experimental. Here are Blake’s directions. No. 1: The road to excess leads to the palace of wisdom, for we never know what is enough until we know what is more than enough. No. 2: If the fool would persist in his folly, he would become wise. No. 3: The pride of the peacock is the glory of God. The lust of the goat is the bounty of God. No. 4: No bird soars too high if it soars with its own wings. No. 5: Exuberance is beauty.
LEO (July 23-Aug. 22): Cosmic energies are staging a big party in your astrological House of Ambition. It’s a great time to expand and intensify your concepts of what you want to accomplish with your one wild and precious life. You will attract unexpected help as you shed your inhibitions about asking for what you really want. Life will benevolently conspire on your behalf as you dare to get bolder in defining your highest goals. Be audacious, Leo! Be brazen and brave and brilliant! I predict you will be gifted with lucid intuitions about how best to channel your drive for success. You will get feelers from influential people who can help you in your quest for victory. (P.S.: The phrase “your one wild and precious life” comes from poet Mary Oliver.)
VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22): Is it possible to be too smart for your own good? Maybe, although that won’t be a problem for you anytime soon. However, you may temporarily be too smart for some people who are fixated on conventional and simplistic solutions. You could be too super-brilliant for those who wallow in fear or regard cynicism as a sign of intelligence. But I will not advise you to dumb yourself down, dear Virgo. Instead, I will suggest you be crafty and circumspect. Act agreeable and humble, even as you plot behind the scenes to turn everything upside-down and inside-out — by which I mean, make it work with more grace and benefit for everyone concerned.
LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22): In my fairy tale about your life in the coming weeks and months, you will transform from a crafty sleuth to an eager explorer. You will finish your wrestling matches with tricky angels and wander o to consort with big thinkers and deep feelers. You will finish your yeoman attempts to keep everyone happy in the human zoo and instead indulge your sacred longings for liberation and experimentation. In this fairy tale of your life, Libra, I will play the role of your secret benefactor. I will unleash a steady stream of prayers to bless you with blithe zeal as you relish every heart-opening, brain-cleansing moment of your new chapter.
SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21): In the coming months, I will encourage you to keep deepening and refining the art of intimacy. I will rejoice as you learn more and more about how to feel close to people you care for and how to creatively deal with challenges you encounter in your quest to become closer. Dear Scorpio, I will also cheer you on whenever you dream up innovations to propitiate togetherness. Bonus blessings! If you do all I’m describing, your identity will come into brighter focus. You will know who you are with greater accuracy. Get ready! The coming weeks will o er you novel opportunities to make progress on the themes I’ve mentioned.
SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21): You could o er a workshop on the perks of wobbliness. Your anxious ruminations and worried fantasies are so colorful that I almost hesitate to tell you to stop. I’m wondering if this is one of those rare phases when you could take advantage of your so-called negative feelings. Is it possible that lurking just below the uneasiness are sensational revelations about a path to liberation? I’m guessing there are. To pluck these revelations, you must get to the core of the uneasiness.
CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19): During the last 11 months, life has o ered you unprecedented
opportunities to deepen and ripen your emotional intelligence. You have been vividly invited to grow your wisdom about how to manage and understand your feelings. I trust you have been capitalizing on these glorious teachings. I hope you have honed your skills at tapping into the power and insights provided by your heart and gut. There’s still more time to work on this project, Capricorn. In the coming weeks, seek out breakthroughs that will climax this phase of your destiny.
AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18): Naturalist and author Henry David Thoreau declared, “We need the tonic of wildness.” Amen! In my view, you Aquarians especially need this sweet, rugged healing power in the coming weeks. Borrowing more words from Thoreau, I urge you to exult in all that is mysterious, unsurveyed and unfathomable. Like Thoreau, I hope you will deepen your connection with the natural world because “it is cheerfully, musically earnest.” Share in his belief that “we must go out and re-ally ourselves to Nature every day. We must take root, send out some little fiber.”
PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20): I have four questions and homework assignments for you, Pisces. No. 1: Is there a person in your inner circle who is close to ripening a latent talent that would ultimately benefit you? I suspect there is. What can you do to assist them? No. 2: Is there a pending gift or legacy that you have not yet claimed or activated? I think so. What would be a good first step to get it fully into your life? No. 3: What half-dormant potency could you call on and use if you were more confident about your ability to wield it? I believe you now have the wherewithal to summon the confidence you need. No. 4: What wasteful habit could you replace with a positive new habit?
ARIES (March 21-April 19): When my friend Jessalyn first visited Disneyland as a child, she was smitten by its glimmering, unblemished mystery. “It was far more real than real,” she said. “A dream come true.” But after a few hours, her infatuation unraveled. She began to see through the luster. Waiting in long lines to go on the rides exhausted her. The mechanical elephant was broken. The food was unappetizing. The actor impersonating Mickey Mouse shucked his big mouse head and swilled a beer. The days ahead may have resemblances to Jessalyn’s awakening for you. This slow-motion jolt might vex you initially, although I believe it’s a healthy sign. It will lead to a cleansed perspective that’s free of illusion and teeming with clarity.
Meet Dodger!
From the moment he arrived, Dodger (A543435) has been calm and sociable with people. Our vets estimate his age to be about 4 years old, but he carries himself like a much older dog. He is gentle with people, taking treats softly, and loves the praise and attention he gets from our staff. Dodger is not a small dog at 70 pounds, but unlike some dogs, he actually knows his size and strength, and rarely pulls on a leash. He will stand up on two legs to get hugs and take treats, but is careful not to knock our staff over. Mostly though, Dodger wants to sit and snuggle. He’s not shy about getting close; Dodger is the kind of a dog that is going to want to share your sofa and your bed. He has been at the shelter now for over 50 days.
As a small token of appreciation, Orange County Animal Services hopes to bring joy to local heroes by waiving animal adoption fees.
