Ladapo touted for U.S. Department of Health and Human Services head, teen charged in downtown Orlando Halloween shooting will be tried as an adult, local election results and other news you may have missed.

» Elections, elections, and more elections

In case you missed it, there was a pretty big election last week. More than 150 million people in the United States cast ballots for the 2024 General Election, including more than 11 million registered voters in Florida. Last Tuesday, Nov. 5, we saw President-elect Donald Trump easily carry the Sunshine State, securing 56 percent of the vote. Two of Florida’s most closely watched and controversial statewide ballot initiatives — Amendment 4, to restore and guarantee abortion rights, and Amendment 3, to legalize recreational marijuana for adults over 21— received more than 50 percent of the vote, but did not surpass the minimum 60 percent threshold they needed to pass. This delivered a crushing blow to abortion rights advocates and supporters of marijuana legalization. U.S. Sen. Rick Scott, R-Florida, facing off against Democratic challenger Debbie Mucarsel-Powell, handily won his own bid for reelection to Congress. So did local Democratic congressmen U.S. House Reps. Maxwell Frost and Darren Soto.

» Local election results: charter amendments, county commission, school board

Locally, all 10 charter amendment proposals in Orange County passed, along with a referendum to continue a half-penny sales tax that supports public schools. School board member Karen CastorDentel won her bid this year to become Orange County’s next Supervisor of Elections, in what had become a crowded and competitive race. In Orange County Commission races, incumbents Mayra Uribe and Nicole Wilson managed to hold onto their seats, representing Districts 3 and 1 respectively, while environmental activist and UCF professor Kelly Semrad defeated former Winter Park mayor and developer Steve Leary in her bid for the District 5 seat, soon to be vacated by term-limited commissioner Emily Bonilla (who endorsed Semrad to replace her). Orange County school board candidate Anne Douglas, endorsed by the teachers’ union, won her race against Kyle Goudy in her bid for the District 4 seat, soon to be vacated by school board member Pam Gould.

» State Attorney Monique Worrell gets her job back Former State Attorney Monique Worrell reclaimed the office she was, some would say, unfairly booted from by Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, though rumors are already swirling that she’ll be removed again. Worrell, a Democrat, faced off against DeSantis appointee Andrew Bain, who ran as non-party-affiliated. Worrell secured 57.5 percent of the vote (413,666 votes, as of this writing), while Bain received 42.5 percent or 305,733 votes. As results were being finalized on election night, Worrell exclusively told the Orlando Sentinel, “Tonight the voters have vindicated me. Let’s just hope the governor will respect the will of the voters this time.”

» Orange County voters overwhelmingly wanted stronger abortion rights for Florida

If it were up to voters in Orange County alone, Florida’s abortion rights measure, Amendment 4, would have passed this November. According to unofficial election results, Amendment 4 received a 65 percent vote of support from Orange County voters, compared to a 57 percent vote of support statewide. While 57 percent is still a clear majority of Florida voters — even higher than Trump’s percentage of support — the state Constitution requires proposed constitutional amendments to get at least 60 percent of the vote in order to pass. Amendment 4, if passed, would have enshrined the right to abortion up to viability in the state Constitution, overriding Florida’s current sixweek abortion ban and preventing further interference. Anti-abortion activists and Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis poured millions of dollars (including taxpayer funds) into campaigns opposing Amendment 4, arguing (among other objections) it would gut a parental consent requirement for minors. Voters in Hillsborough, Pinellas and Broward counties also approved Amendment 4 with more than 60 percent in support.

» DeSantis wants to see Florida Surgeon General Joseph Ladapo head U.S. health agency

Gov. Ron DeSantis last week endorsed his own controversial State Surgeon General Joseph Ladapo for a top healthcare position in the next Trump administration. DeSantis went on social media, where he called on followers to repost a picture of Ladapo if they want to see him serve as secretary of the Department of Health and Human Services once President-elect Donald Trump assumes

office. DeSantis’ promotion of Ladapo comes days after it was reported that Robert F. Kennedy Jr., a known vaccine skeptic who endorsed Trump for president after mounting his own independent bid for president, had been touting Ladapo. ABC News reported that sources indicated that those working on a Trump transition were taking the recommendation seriously. DeSantis hired Ladapo to take over Florida’s Department of Health in September 2021. During his time in the DeSantis administration, Ladapo has proven a lightning rod, for example by expressing deep skepticism of COVID-19 vaccines and the efficacy of face masks to limit exposure to viruses. Ladapo also pressed the Florida Board of Medicine to change its rules to prevent physicians from providing minors access to gender-affirming care and to limit access to the care for adults. More recently, it was Ladapo’s agency that sent threatening letters to TV stations airing pro-Amendment 4 commercials.

» Teen charged in downtown Orlando Halloween shooting to be tried as adult The teenager charged in the downtown Orlando shooting that killed two and injured several others in the early morning after Halloween will be tried as an adult, a state attorney announced. Orange-Osceola State Attorney Andrew Bain (serving the remainder of his term) announced that 17-year-old Jaylen Dewayne Edgar will face adult charges of two counts of second-degree murder and one of attempted murder. Additional charges could be added as the investigation continues, a briefing says. “This decision was not made lightly and only after a review of all available evidence,” said Bain. “I have personally reviewed all available records and video evidence in this case and there is no question this individual should be charged as an adult. Orlando police estimate there were 75,000 people downtown on the night of the shooting. To shoot into a massive crowd like that shows a total disregard for life and the only recourse is to charge the defendant as an adult because it fits the egregious nature of the crime.”

HAIL THE CHRISTMAS QUEENS

Jinkx

Monsoon

and

BenDeLaCreme

deck Orlando’s halls

From John Waters having Divine push over a Christmas tree on her parents and muttering curses about not getting cha-cha heels, to Grace Jones’ surreal “Little Drummer Boy” on PeeWee Herman’s Christmas special, to Ghostface Killa and the Sonics and Cocteau Twins tackling carols — and that’s just a random sampling! — there’s something about Christmas that compels madcap and boundary-pushing entertainers to try their hand at seasonal traditions.

What is it about this holiday that makes rule-breakers want to wrest the airwaves and stages away from the traditional likes of Bing Crosby, Michael Bublé and Mannheim Steamroller to tell their own delightfully or fabulously glamorous songs and stories? Be their own Rockettes, their own Bowie & Bing, their own Charlie Brown gang? Maybe it’s something to do with the warm, treelit glow of childhood nostalgia, or maybe it’s the hope they can get all

the sundry Grinches’ hearts to grow three sizes (we need it for sure), or maybe it’s even wanting to annex some of that undeniable feeling of togetherness and generosity for folks not often seen beaming on Christmas cards. Who can say for sure?

What we can say is that drag superstars Jinkx Monsoon and BenDeLaCreme — comedy queens, writers and actors par excellence — have teamed up once again for their touring holiday roadshow and it’s bigger and merrier and more timely than ever. The holiday season begins now! And even our two Xmas heroines feel weird about it!

“As another year defiantly slaps the ‘Well, at least it can’t get any worse’ out of our mouths, we need ways not just to cope, but to gather strength. Are there any tools greater than comedy, sequins and song? Yeah, absolutely. But those are the gifts Jinkx and I have to share, and

we hope you’ll share them with us,” says DeLa.

“All the lights and songs and trappings of the holidays were created to help get us through the coldest, darkest part of the year. To keep our spirits bright as we steel ourselves for the winter to come and remember that spring will return once again. In a world that feels increasingly dark, please come make some light with us. We will gladly share our warmth.”

“I seriously can’t believe it’s the holidays again already. Who has time to plan festivities when the world is bananas? What are we supposed to do when everything feels so chaotic? Well, what DeLa and I do is put on a show,” Monsoon chimes in.“The holidays are upon us whether we like it or not, but the Jinkx and DeLa team are well-equipped to bring you the holiday cheer and warm feeling of community we all need in the harsh winter months.”

THE JINKX & DELA HOLIDAY SHOW

stints on RuPaul’s Drag Race and Drag Race AllStars, their holiday film The Jinkx & DeLa Holiday Special, TV or Broadway, this live show promises different and festive sides of the two hard-working queens of all trades.

“Jinkx and BenDeLaCreme hold a unique position as good old-fashioned, over-the-top traditional parody queens who fall under the Miss Congeniality title. They’ve raised the bar for theatrical drag productions,” posits local alt-drag performer Davi Oddity on the duo’s impact.

This is the seventh year of the festive duo’s holiday extravaganza — The Jinkx & DeLa Holiday Show — a rollicking roadshow that the New York Times praised as “queer, clever, and heartfelt.” It’s completely co-written by DeLa and Monsoon, and produced and directed by DeLa. So it’s queer folks penning their own songs, parodies, monologues and routines without outside hands. The duo seriously spend a month writing and then another month rehearsing and refining until every line elicits maximum ho-ho-hos. To say nothing of the dance number and costume designs … There are a number of unique aspects to this year’s holiday show, so let’s run ’em down like we’re breathlessly opening windows on an Advent calendar, shall we?

This is a completely new show from previous years; no holiday re-runs here, buddy. Previous years saw them time-traveling a la It’s a Wonderful Life [BTW, that’s a satisfyingly socialist movie]; who knows where they’ll go this year. Not to mention new costumes and new production design — and with Monsoon taking Broadway by storm, and DeLa becoming an increasingly in-demand director, this will be a proper (Christmas) pageant.

The 33-city tour is taking them South this year (an extra bit of metaphorical coal in DeSantis’ stocking?). Wednesday’s show is one of only two Florida dates, and there’s a bit of a sense of mission amongst all the tinsel and fake antlers.

“These trans and queer people in the South ... they’re currently living under the dystopian future I’m fighting against,” Monsoon told The Advocate. “They’ve been suffering and either the suffering will lift or continue, but they need us there.”

Monsoon and DeLa for years used their holiday tour as an excuse to avoid their families and celebrate the season in their own way, among their own chosen families: tonight, maybe we can get some communal respite of our own — and a few solid gags about trying to have sex with Krampus. arts@orlandoweekly.com

A ruby ribbon of fate seems to have entwined playwright

Amanda Scheirer and her Without Fear Theatre co-founders, Dan Drnach and Lern Morrison, with her tale of The Red String, in the works for 15 years

According to ancient Chinese mythology, a matchmaking deity will tie an invisible red string around your ankle and attach the other end to the person you are destined to spend your life with, connecting soulmates across time and space with a bond that can never be broken. I’m not certain about the reality of romantic predestination, but a ruby ribbon of fate certainly seems to have entwined playwright-director Amanda Scheirer and her Without Fear Theatre co-founders, Dan Drnach and Lern Morrison, with her tale of The Red String, which has been under development in various media for nearly 15 years. I recently attended a rehearsal of their new musical ahead of its Nov. 15 premiere at Fringe ArtSpace (orlandofringe.org), and talked with the trio about the tangled path they’ve traveled together from page to stage.

The seed for The Red String was initially planted back in 2010, when Scheirer was studying at Trinity College in Dublin under Irish playwright Marina Carr, who assigned the class to keep a “dream journal” and mine it for creative material. “I was having dreams about someone in my past who I always had that missed connection with,” Scheirer recalls. “What if it wasn’t a missed connection? What if we actually had that moment to say all the things we thought about each other, all the feelings we felt for each other? What if we got to have that moment? And from there, that’s where the story really took flight.” The result was a one-act play called How to Say

I Love You, which was performed at The Venue (RIP) in 2015, and went on to spawn a novel by the same name published in 2018. It also inspired a stage followup titled The Unavailable Man Magnet at the 2016 Orlando Fringe, which was my first introduction to Scheirer’s semi-autobiographical protagonist, Nessa (played then and now by Morrison), an aspiring novelist from Philadelphia working in Orlando’s entertainment industry.

“I think Nessa started out as a lot of me, and over the years, has evolved,” says Scheirer. “So I think there’s still a thread or a string (if I can say) of me that runs through her, but I think she has moved past being a proxy for myself.”

“Nessa is exactly what we all want to aspire to be when we’re just simply trying to chase our dream,” adds Morrison, whom the author credits with contributing a “fairly big stamp” on the character over the years. “I’ve always wanted to chase my dream, no matter what people told me. No matter how ridiculous it might have been, or even people telling me to give up or telling me ‘no,’ I told them what for, and I went after it. I think that’s exactly who Nessa is, and that’s why I’m really happy that I get to play her.”

Back in 2016, I called Nessa “a compelling, contemporary character,” writing that “the charming Morrison inhabits her with the effortless ease of a (tattooed) second skin,” and suggesting that the brief script be expanded with some dramatic conflicts worthy of her “plucky personality.”

Scheirer had said at the time that the play was “a small part of a bigger project,” and a little over eight years later she and her collaborators have finally culminated Nessa’s journey — and their own — with this full-length, fully staged original musical.

After composer-lyricist Drnach — who played a role in the non-musical Fringe production — read Scheirer’s novel, he was inspired to write five original songs; those became the backbone of the musical’s first act, which received a concert reading in 2019, and were combined with songs he’d previously penned to form this two-act version. Drnach says he “basically gave Amanda 100% permission to use anything that I had written and had recorded up until that point,” which includes a range of catchy classic rock-influenced tunes with a country-blues twang. “Amanda has

been able to identify whatever the emotion or the story that was in a piece of music that I had written independently of Red String and apply it to the characters.”

The Red String follows Nessa’s quarter-life crisis, as she criss-crosses Europe with best friend Sami (Carly Skubick-Clark), desperately searching for her dream man, George (Adam DelMedico), who she’s been obsessed with since they were childhood neighbors. The star-crossed lovers’ emotional entanglement is irresistible — thanks in large part to the onstage chemistry between Morrison and DelMedico — but inconvenient obstacles like George’s Teutonic wife. Greta (Lily E. Garnett) get in their way, driving the pair apart for years before they finally get their [spoiler alert] happy endings.

But unlike the 2000s-era romantic comedies that obviously inspired this show, The Red String’s characters strive not to be as stereotypical or saccharine, according to Scheirer. “We know we’re writing a rom-com and staging a rom-com, and we don’t want it to be, like, unrealistic. We don’t want it to be something that people can’t see themselves in, which is kind of a cornerstone of the work we do. … We want them to be full, rounded characters.” That includes their sexuality, as both leading ladies are depicted as LGBTQ. “It’s just something about her that everyone knows and accepts,” explains Scheirer, who initially conceived Nessa as bisexual, but now sees her as pansexual. “It’s just who she is, and it’s accepted by the people in her life.”

This show concludes Without Fear’s involvement with Orlando Fringe’s Collective incubator [full disclosure: which my wife works for], after premiering their rock opera Find Me in February. Drnach calls the entire experience a “dream come true,” while Scheirer says they will be donating a portion of their proceeds back to the Festival because the production “never would have been possible, I don’t think, in this timeline without Fringe, and for them to give us this opportunity really just meant the world. … It’s strengthened our relationships as partners and as producers, so we want to make sure that Fringe is able to keep doing that, and keep giving that opportunity to other theater makers.” skubersky@orlandoweekly.com

LEADER OF THE PAK

Koyla Pakistani BBQ presents its beefed-up menu every night of the week, but Sundays really sizzle

Walk into any Pakistani restaurant in this city and you’ll notice the meat-forward menus at places like Kabab King, Chaat House, Tawa, BBQ Tonight and Sizler Tandoori have beef in a starring role. But there’s an actor down on the Orange/Osceola county border that Paks in the protein and lures folks from Seminole, Hillsborough, even as far as Dade counties. The name is Koyla Pakistani BBQ, and while its frowzy backdrop (just down the street from the Florida Project motel) is short on looks, there’s real beauty in its fare.

That wasn’t evident when we pulled up one Sunday evening and were told that they were only offering a buffet ($24.99). “No” was the response to our inquiry about ordering off the menu, and that included nihari, a dish the

pal and I were excited to try. So we resigned ourselves to picking through the uncovered trays of meat that, at first blush, didn’t seem all that inviting. A spoon was missing from one tray; there were splats of chutney on the table courtesy of an evening rush. And that’s when chef-owner Bilaal Dugan walked in the door. The man laid some charred goods from outside into those trays, and we couldn’t help but follow him back out to the source.

To the side of the restaurant, under a tent, sat a long rectangular grill propped up on a steel table. Hot red coals sat beneath skewers of beef and chicken, their drippings scenting the air. “We only do this on Sundays,” said Dugan, and the resignation we felt just moments before evaporated like fat hitting scorching charcoal.

“This bihari kebab is my favorite,” he said before de-skewering the eye-of-round morsels onto a plate for us. The plush chunks had been marinated in papaya paste and a bit of yogurt overnight, lending them a soft, almost creamy texture with a crusty charred exterior. A “treasured family recipe” is used for the seasoning blend, but garlic, ginger, chilies, poppy seeds and nutmeg are basic elements.

We slathered on the green chili chutney and enjoyed it “as is,” but when a plate of puri paratha ($4.99) came out, our eyes bulged wide. “Only four places in the country make this,” Dugan said, and whether the claim checks out or not, it didn’t take away from the fact that this fried bread, thick like a paratha but bubbled and airy like puri, is alone worth driving out to Kissimmee for. Best of all, it’s included in the price of the buffet, and we quite enjoyed rolling some of the other kebabs inside it — cylindrical gola kebab fashioned from minced beef, chicken seekh kebab, and chunks of gingery chicken boti kebab.

Now, all these charcoaled meats are available every day of the week; they’re just not grilled outside except on Sundays, and outside is where you’ll feel like you’re dining on a busy street in Karachi. A cat strutted past us and curled up near the entrance of the restaurant; Pakistani families chatted away in Urdu; we even witnessed a fender-bender from the outdoor table where we sat.

Then, more superb eats: fry kebab, a street food staple on Burns Road in Karachi, is more of a spiced minced beef curry fried in a whole lot of ghee. We scooped it up with butter naan, which is also included in the price of the allyou-can-eat affair. Admittedly, I de-prioritized the chicken biryani that sat in a steel receptacle at the end of the buffet line, but that was a mistake. This was one of the better biryanis I’ve had in a while, and the separation of the extra-long-grain Sella rice Dugan uses had a lot to do with it. I almost passed on the rice dish, but I’m glad I didn’t.

And I’m also glad I stopped by Koyla (the Urdu word for “charcoal”) the following day to revel in the dish I’d wanted to order the previous night — nihari ($17.99). Of all the renditions of Pakistan’s national dish I’ve had in this city, Koyla’s is, without a doubt, the finest. The beef shank is so yielding, and the luxuriant gravy so redolent with cinnamon, ginger, garam masala and chili powder, that I ordered two puri ($1.99 each) to sop up the thick liquid. Never on a Sunday, I hummed inside my head as I enjoyed this most comforting of stews but, as it turned out, Monday, Monday was so good to me. fkara@orlandoweekly.com

The second-floor bar, however, continues to operate as normal … Hollieanna Groves, the citrus stand at 540 Orlando Ave. in Maitland, is closing for good. The stand opened in 1950 and changed hands a couple of times before the Lingle family purchased it in 1954. They cited the “many challenges the citrus industry brings coupled with economic challenges, our ages and the desire to spend more time with our families” as reasons to close. That said, Hollieanna still will sell its citrus fruits, cakes, gift baskets and more online at hollieanna.com. A catalog is available for download too.

DON’T SWEAT THE TECHNIQUE

Black Violin marks 20 years of remixing musical history

Black Violin, the duo raised on a mix of Mozart and hip-hop modernity, have been remixing and reimagining musical history for two decades.

The creative partnership of violinist Kev Marcus and viola player Wil Baptiste evolved from high-school orchestra classes together in Fort Lauderdale to award-winning wielders of stringed instruments. They first made their unique presence known to the music world by winning Showtime at the Apollo in 2005. NPR duly dubbed the band as essential to keeping “classical music alive for the next generation” after a series of sold-out performances at the Kennedy Center.

But the journey wasn’t always as smooth as the resonant tones of the violas and violins Baptiste and Marcus wield — meshing such seemingly disparate and perhaps perceptually

oppositional genres as hip-hop and classical took a long leap of faith.

“The stereotypes are always there, embedded so deep in our culture,” Baptiste says. “Just by nature of our existence we challenge those ideas. It’s a unique thing that brings people together who usually aren’t in the same room; and in the current climate, it’s good to bring people together.”

The pair want to go beyond just making challenging music, though. After breaking down plenty of genre-based barriers during their musical journey, Baptiste and Marcus tackled a new cause. In 2019 they launched Black Violin Foundation Inc., a nonprofit organization dedicated to increasing access for youth — especially youth of color — to quality music education.

“We want every young student that is in our audience not to just go be a violinist because I’m

a violinist,” Marcus recently told Aspen Public Radio. “It’s like: What is it that you love to do? What makes you tick?”

Many of Marcus and Baptiste’s performances today are for young students in low-income communities, where they combat stereotypes and challenge the notion of what a classical musician can look like. The pair played for more than 10,000 students in the last year alone, proving to youngsters across the nation you can enjoy Beethoven and Big Boi.

“I think we’ve made a fantastic career off that preconception,” Marcus said in conversation with The Public’s Radio this spring. “Every night we get to go through this process of just showing a group of people something that they’ve never seen before and never heard before, and it’s awesome.”

“My favorite part of being a violinist is that I’m not supposed to do it,” Marcus added.

In Marcus’ life, he has felt the profound impact of representation and how it can fuel the next generation of greats. On his first day at Florida International University, Marcus’ professor gave him a tape of Stuff Smith’s Black Violin — a 1972 album that deeply resonated with and inspired him.

Marcus and Baptiste would eventually take Smith’s album name as their own, a nod to the past and a mission statement of who they are and what they’re here to do. The group continues today, after 20 years of bridging the gap between classical and popular music.

Walt Disney Theater, Dr. Phillips Center for the Performing Arts 445 S. Magnolia Ave. drphillipscenter.org

$39.50-$90

“It was hard, definitely, at the beginning, 20 years ago, you know, trying to convince people, like, ‘Hey I got these two Black guys that play classical — but they do it on hip-hop,’” Marcus said to Aspen Public Radio. But the challenge was well worth it.

The pair comes to the Dr. Phillips Center for the Performing Arts Monday — joined onstage by bandmates Nat Stokes on drums, DJ SPS on the turntables and keyboardist Liston Gregory — for “BV20: Then and Now,” a journey through the duo’s musical life. Expect the hits, expect new music, expect “revitalized classics.”

“Fans can expect us to illustrate our journey from high school to headliner, and we plan to celebrate all of it: ‘Then and Now,’” promised Marcus. “We want our fans to feel energized, inspired, and more driven to chase their dreams.”

We highly recommend that you get up out of your seats and dance.

LOCAL RELEASES

Through his prolific output as Healboi Bedside, Orlando artist Leonel Urena has carved a unique niche with his open-ended approach to hip-hop. Still, his brand-new album, Orchard, is a notable stretch even by his own standards.

Leaning very alternative in more ways than one, the tendrils of Bedside’s hip-hop experimentation this time reach deep into rock music. Although an unconventional turn, it’s actually a direct extension of his personal influences.

“I’m inspired by bands like the Mars Volta, Underoath, Linkin Park, P.O.D., Slipknot and the Fall of Troy,” says Urena. “And I view this album as an exploration of subgenres within rock music through the lens of my production style, which is influenced by Mike Shinoda of Linkin Park, among others.”

As such, Orchard isn’t just another kaleidoscopic Healboi Bedside collection. With pronounced hues of punk, emo, screamo, indie rock, electronic and even dance, it’s sometimes barely even hip-hop. In fact, far more songs here are sung than rapped.

Moreover, the album’s detailing and complexion — rooted this time in organic rock textures — mark a departure in Bedside’s usual sample-based hip-hop production method.

“This is my first album where 95 percent of the music is sample-less,” he says. “I played a lot of guitar, bass and singing, screaming and rapping vocals.”

For as motley as this all seems, Healboi juggles the heterogeneity without devolving into forced fusion. Instead, the album exploits interesting juxtapositions to achieve a sound horizon and an emotional palette that transcends traditional hip-hop. Orchard now streams everywhere.

CONCERT PICKS THIS WEEK

Heavy//Hitter, Peacemaker, Slamwich, Lilith’s Demise, Execution Complex: OK, there’s too much in this extreme bill to ignore. While deathcore lives in a certain amount of ignominy in metal society, these bands own the label loud and proud, some even self-identifying with the simultaneously specific and funny descriptor “MySpace deathcore.”

Of course, there’s the brutal Central Florida triad of Heavy//Hitter, Peacemaker and Execution Complex. But the other two bands bring a little something else to the mosh pit. Besides the most hilariously awesome name ever, Boston band Slamwich inject some needed female representation to the beatdown party. Miami band Lilith’s Demise take that a step further with feminine rage that produces songs like new single “With Teeth.” It’s about a fanged, man-eating vagina, which is also conveniently depicted on the cover art in case you find lyrics like “I’m coming to slice your fucking dick off”

too abstract. Go get insane, and maybe wear a cup. (7 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 14, Will’s Pub, $18-$20)

Volume I: Dance This Mess Around: Clearly, we are going to have to lean on this forward-thinking bubble we live in here for at least the next four years or so. Might as well do it right and make it a gay ol’ party (our version of GOP). To that end, Volume is a new series that celebrates music, dance and queer performance art. This launch, titled “Dance This Mess Around,” is a variety event featuring Earth Fault — the EBM solo project by Circuit Church principal Jared Silvia — and DJs Jas000n and Bretto Rush, and drag performances by the evening’s host and curator Davi Oddity alongside Myki Meeks, Amnesia Effect and E. Even while dark clouds gather around us, it’s still all rainbows up in here. (8 p.m. Friday, Nov. 15, Will’s Pub, $10-$15)

Slant, Watts, The Ashies, Vile: Since the war against women just got a massive institutional boost as of Election Day 2024, consider this a bit of pushback. Since we couldn’t get our shit together as a society and do it on the national stage, Moxie Booking’s latest bill at least puts women at the front of the punk stage with a femme-forward lineup. Shooting straight, hard and fast, South Korean headliners Slant rip classic 1980s-style hardcore in short, brilliant tempests that hit and split. Orlando’s Watts have become the area’s current reigning hardcore heavyweights through their absolutely detonating performances. Young punk bands Vile from Melbourne and The Ashies from Miami represent the new blood pumping up from the Florida underground. Sixpence None the Richer

Need a bit of musical escapism? Delightfully twee 1990s jangle-folk stars Sixpence None the Richer are back and headed to Orlando. The classic lineup of Leigh Nash, Matt Slocum, Dale Baker and Justin Cary have reconvened after many years apart and are on the road on a 25th anniversary tour. Will you hear their sprightly breakthrough hit “Kiss Me” and cloying cover of The La’s “There She Goes?” Of course you will. But you’re also going to hear tracks from their new album Rosemary Hill, out on Flatiron Recordings. They even have a new cover of U.K. Xmas hit “I Believe in Father Christmas” out, so you might hear that one too. (It’s our Holiday Guide issue, so we can’t not mention it!) 7 p.m., Plaza Live, 425 N. Game Changer Wrestling

Game Changer Wrestling, perhaps the most raucous and unhinged professional wrestling independent running today, returns to Orlando and we are ready. Notably, the night will feature the extreme Nick Gage Invitational — sure to be wig-flipping — with participants from all over the country, including Rina Yamashita, John Wayne Murdoch, Brandon Kirk, Takayuki Ueki, Tank and Sawyer Wreck. Former Orlandoan Wreck, a familiar face in local rings, has announced that this is her final show and she’s retiring from wrestling after. Paper Rocket Launch

Orlando Science Center hosts a Guinness World Records title attempt this week, inviting science (and paper-folding) enthusiasts to get involved. The record the Center is aiming for is the most people launching paper rockets simultaneously. OSC is looking for at least 250 human launchers for the event. The museum defines a paper rocket as a toy made of paper that fits onto a straw and flies through the air when someone blows through the straw. They will all be made before the event in Orlando Science Center’s maker space and distributed to participants once in the CineDome. An official judge from Guinness World Records will be on hand to verify the attempt. This event is in conjunction with the Science of Guinness World Records exhibition, currently on display at the Center until early 2025. 10 a.m., Orlando Science Center, 777 E. P!nk

It seems like Florida is stuck in an endless summer … at least as far as pop sensation P!nk is concerned. The American singer-songwriter is on her “Summer Carnival” 2024 tour — complete with an autumnal Orlando return, close on the heels of an Amway Center gig last year. Upgrading from an arena to a stadium, the “Summer Carnival 2024 Stadium Tour” lands at Camping World Stadium on Monday. P!nk’s 2023 tour cha-chinged nearly $350 million in ticket sales across North America, Europe and the U.K. But it’s not all about the dollar signs; the pop star is bringing some famous friends on the road to join her nightly. This show will feature fellow 1990s hitmaker Sheryl Crow, along with young Irish rockers The Script. 6:30 p.m., Camping World Stadium, 1 Citrus Bowl Place, campingworldstadium.com, $49.95$299.95. — Grayson Keglovic

Casselberry Arts Center continues innovating and presenting multimedia events with a new free (!) concert series this week, featuring Nashville singer-songwriter William Tyler. Tyler is best known as a collaborator with seminal acts Lambchop and Silver Jews (be still our hearts), but his solo work is equally gripping. Over the last couple of years, Tyler has been embracing the outer bounds of creativity with a rollicking full-band album, Secret Stratosphere, collaborations with Four Tet and this year’s electronic/roots hybrid, “Flight Final.” Support comes from the incomparable Zoya Zafar and, intriguingly, the current exhibition at CAC, Liminal Space.
