OnePulse to dissolve, Florida lawmakers resist climate control in state prisons, another round of gender identity battles teed up for 2024 legislative session, and other news you may have missed. BY MCKENNA S C H U EL ER AN D T H E N EWS S E RV I C E OF FLOR I DA

OnePulse decides to dissolve shortly after beaing accused of breach of contract with Orange County

»

The OnePulse Foundation, formed in the wake of the 2016 mass shooting at Pulse nightclub, has announced plans for dissolution following a string of high-profile setbacks. A group of Pulse survivors had previously called on the organization, which has millions of dollars in assets, to submit to a forensic audit. The organization’s executive director resigned earlier this month, as did their board chairman. The latest announcement came two days after the Orange County government sent a default notice to OnePulse, alleging breach of contract. Orange County entered into an agreement with OnePulse in 2018, allocating the organization $10 million in tourist development taxes — public money — to fund its planned museum project. That project, however, was scrapped by OnePulse in October, after the city of Orlando bought the former Pulse site to build a memorial there. According to the Orange County government, OnePulse breached its contract by entering into unauthorized licensing agreements with an entertainment agency, and renting out property that OnePulse had purchased for the planned Pulse museum. State Rep. Anna Eskamani of Orlando has joined the call initiated by Pulse survivors and victims’ family members for an audit of OnePulse’s records to investigate the nonprofit for misconduct, fraud or other financial irregularities.

Hearing slated for early December in DeSantis–Disney battle

A federal judge will hear arguments Dec. 12 on requests by Gov. Ron DeSantis and a revamped Central Florida tourism district to dismiss a high-profile lawsuit filed by Walt Disney Parks and Resorts. U.S. District Judge Allen Winsor will hold a hearing in Tallahassee in the case, which centers on allegations that the state unconstitutionally retaliated against Disney because of the company’s opposition to a controversial education law. Attorneys for DeSantis and the Central Florida Tourism Oversight District filed motions in September to dismiss the case. They dispute that a decision by DeSantis and lawmakers to replace the former Reedy Creek Improvement District with the Central Florida Tourism Oversight District was retaliation that violated Disney’s First Amendment rights. The decades-old Reedy Creek district was closely aligned with Disney, while DeSantis appoints the new district’s board. Disney filed the lawsuit in April and filed a revised version in September. DeSantis and Disney began clashing in 2022 after company officials opposed a new law that restricted discussion of sexual orientation and gender identity in schools.

Florida Republican wants to forbid local governments from regulating investigations of police misconduct

A different Florida Republican files bill to ban use of personal pronouns at government agencies

In what could fuel a new round of legislative battles about gender identity, a House Republican last week filed a bill for consideration by lawmakers that would place restrictions on government agencies in the use of personal pronouns. The bill (HB 599), filed by first-term Rep. Ryan Chamberlin, R-Belleview, also would restrict workplace training from covering issues involving sexual orientation and gender identity. If approved next year, the proposal would prevent state and local government agencies from requiring employees and contractors to refer to other people “using that person’s preferred personal title or pronouns if such personal title or pronouns do not correspond to that person’s sex” as determined at birth. It would also prevent employees of government agencies and contractors from providing to their employers preferred pronouns that “do not correspond to his or her sex” as determined at birth, and would prevent employers from asking workers to provide personal pronouns. In addition, the bill would prevent nonprofits or employers that get money from the state from requiring workers to take part in “training, instruction or other activity on sexual orientation, gender identity or gender expression.” The bill will be considered during the upcoming 2024 legislative session. Local Rep. Anna Eskamani immediately blasted the proposal, calling it “highly unconstitutional.”

University of South Florida pro-Palestinian group sues DeSantis, education officials

The University of South Florida chapter of the group National Students for Justice in Palestine has filed a lawsuit against Gov. Ron DeSantis and state higher-education officials over an order that called for disbanding the organization on campuses. The lawsuit, alleging a violation of First Amendment rights, challenges an Oct. 24 order by university system Chancellor Ray Rodrigues that alleged actions by National Students for Justice in Palestine violated a state anti-terrorism law. Rodrigues called for shuttering the group’s chapters on Florida campuses, but left open the possibility that the organizations could restart if they followed state law and university policies. The lawsuit was filed less than a week after a similar case was filed by a Students for Justice in Palestine group at the University of Florida.

Florida lawmakers are being asked to use the winter months to swiftly install air conditioning in prison housing units before the return of scorching summer temperatures. Question is: Will they do it? An official for the state Department of Corrections said 75% of housing units in Florida prisons currently lack AC. But some are questioning whether installing it is “worth the investment.” A consultant’s report to senators on Nov. 15 estimated the cost at about $582 million. “It’s a lot of money,” said Republican State Rep. Jonathan Martin of Lee County, adding that corrections officials reported no deaths or injuries from this summer’s record-high temperatures. “Is it worth the investment?” he asked. Denise Rock, executive director of the advocacy group Florida Cares, said she’s convinced the sweltering conditions in state facilities ultimately are unsafe. She said they have records of people passing out from the heat inside prisons. With climate change and record summer heat, Rock argued the time is now for lawmakers to retrofit all existing housing facilities with portable AC. Previous legislative attempts to air-condition the prisons have been unsuccessful.

A House Republican has proposed giving the state control of investigating complaints against law enforcement and correctional officers, taking away authority from local officials. Rep. Wyman Duggan, R-Jacksonville, filed the “preemption” bill (HB 601) for consideration during the 2024 legislative session, which starts Jan. 9. “It is the intent of the Legislature that the receipt, processing, and investigation of complaints against law enforcement officers and correctional officers, and the rights and privileges afforded to such officers while under investigation, apply uniformly throughout the state,” the bill reads. Under it, local governments could not pass any ordinances or rules related to investigating complaints of misconduct by law enforcement and correctional officers. Also, the bill would bar ordinances or rules about civilian oversight of law enforcement agencies in investigating misconduct complaints. orlandoweekly.com ● NOV. 29-DEC. 5, 2023 ● ORLANDO WEEKLY

Mixed messages: Sodexo management staged an anti-union rally at Rollins College in August | Photo by McKenna Schueler

SLIM MARGINS

Cafeteria workers at Rollins, officially employed by contractor Sodexo, voted 33-39 against unionizing with Unite Here after facing an aggressive anti-union campaign BY MCKENNA S CH UEL ER

A

fter facing an onslaught of anti-union messaging from company management, dining workers at Rollins College narrowly voted against joining the labor union Unite Here. Through a two-day election, with votes cast in-person on the college campus Thursday and Saturday, workers voted 33–39 against unionization, seven months after filing a petition with the federal labor board seeking a union election. Workers in the affluent private college’s dining halls, including cooks, cashiers, and dining attendants, first filed a petition with the federal labor board to unionize in April. Workers leading the campaign told Orlando Weekly they quietly began organizing last August with the intent to join Unite Here Local 362, a hospitality union that represents thousands of workers at Disney World and over 100 contracted workers 8

at Orlando International Airport. Support from at least 30% of workers eligible for union representation is required to petition the National Labor Relations Board for an election. The dining workers at Rollins — including cooks, dining room attendants and cashiers in the college’s dining areas — are officially employed by Sodexo, a global catering company that contracts with Rollins, in addition to other college and university campuses across the country. It’s also the largest federal food service contractor in the United States, serving cafeterias for government agencies as well as for private companies like Google, where workers quietly organized during the pandemic. “We’re very proud of the workers who took the risk to try and form their union,”Eric Clinton, president of Local 362, told Orlando Weekly on

ORLANDO WEEKLY ● NOV. 29-DEC. 5, 2023 ● orlandoweekly.com

Monday, in response to the election results.“And we remain committed to workplace justice for food service workers in Central Florida.” Workers at Rollins, a private liberal arts college with about 3,000 students enrolled as of Oct. 30, previously told Orlando Weekly they were organizing for higher pay, better scheduling, and improved healthcare and other benefits. It’s been a hard-fought battle for workers to get a union election date, let alone develop camaraderie for a better shot at formal union recognition. Waiting seven months for an election is unusual. But Sodexo, a France-based company with a long history of anti-union behavior, challenged their employees’ petition with the federal labor board. This caused a delay. That kind of delay tactic — common among employers who oppose attempts by their employees to unionize — joined a stack of other anti-union tactics allegedly deployed by the company. Back in August, Sodexo managers at Rollins College allegedly orchestrated an anti-union rally, in potential violation of federal labor law, scheduled one day before a pro-union rally. A senior food service supervisor who isn’t eligible for union representation with Unite Here invited Orlando Weekly to the anti-union rally to get “another side to the story” after we previously reported on the organizing campaign. A couple dozen workers showed up. Barbara Penaroque, the supervisor who invited Orlando Weekly, and who appeared to be leading the event, passed out T-shirts to workers bearing the

words “No Union” covered with a red circle and slash (so, “yes union”?). It’s unclear where the T-shirts came from, and who purchased them. Penaroque told Orlando Weekly that workers used money out of their own pockets for the purchase. “We purchased the shirts and materials on our own,”she claimed over email, shortly after the event. Workers at Rollins (some of whom weren’t eligible to join the union anyway) marched around on campus with anti-union signs, with one worker (hired just months before) holding a placard that read, “Groovin’ without a union!” Clothing retailer American Apparel allegedly pulled a similar stunt in 2016, according to reporting from In These Times. One of the pro-union workers at Rollins later told Orlando Weekly the “No Union” rally “was bullshit,” alleging that some of the workers there were pressured by their supervisors or managers to attend the fishy demonstration while on the clock. It was organized one day ahead of a scheduled pro-union rally organized by Rollins College students. Under federal labor law, it’s illegal for employers “to interfere with, restrain, or coerce”workers who are exercising their right to form or join a union. Unions can’t coerce workers either. But federal labor law is notoriously employer-friendly. Pro-union members of Congress have been trying to strengthen labor protections through a proposal dubbed the Protecting the Right to Organize Act for years. The union, Unite Here, filed a complaint with the federal labor board in May over the anti-union rally and other alleged violations of federal labor law. Workers told Orlando Weekly earlier this year that Sodexo management was intimidating their coworkers over their organizing activity, making it hard to even have a conversation with them. “People are definitely scared,” said Vincent Padden, then a part-time employee who juggled his job at Rollins with another job that offered higher pay and more consistent scheduling. Many of the workers in dining services at Rollins are people of color, Padden and others explained. Some are immigrants with limited English speaking skills. Outside of Rollins, some of these workers have limited job opportunities and thus rely on the job to support themselves and their families. Rollins College is a lucrative investment for Sodexo — their meal plans, mandatory for undergrads living on-campus, range from $2,615 to $3,405 per semester. As of 2019, all incoming students are required to live on-campus, with limited exceptions (e.g. students who are married and/or have dependents). Rollins’ financial activity is somewhat shrouded by the fact that it isn’t a public institution. But the college’s 990 Tax Form for 2022 shows functional expenses of $9.6 million for dining services and food purchases — up from $7.7 million in 2019, ahead of a pandemic-era dip to $5.5 million the following year.

[ news + views ] All in all, Sodexo appears to be doing just fine. While the company reported declining revenues during the early years of the pandemic, Sodexo reported $22 billion in revenue in 2022, up 21% from the year before. Dining workers at Rollins College, meanwhile, earn hourly wages ranging from $15 to $20, according to federal documents. After Sodexo challenged their workers’ petition for a union election back in April, the National Labor Relations Board — which oversees this process — held a hearing to determine who would be eligible to vote. They gathered information on wages as part of this process. A union election at Rollins College was stalled for months over a complaint from Sodexo disputing which workers they believed should be eligible to join the union. Sodexo tried to insert food supervisors, who work closely with managers, into the pool of workers who’d be eligible for union representation, and therefore be able to vote in a union election. This is a tactic that’s sometimes used by aggressively anti-union employers, like Amazon, to water down support for the union come election time. “Even before the election gets underway, employers try to game the outcome in their favor, starting with legal maneuvers to block or delay the vote,” wrote Barry Eidlin, associate

professor of sociology at McGill University, in a 2021 op-ed for the Washington Post. “They gerrymander the voting district (known as the “bargaining unit”), trying to pack in workers they believe lean anti-union and to carve out those they think are more pro-union.” Supervisors, in addition to some other job classifications, are excluded from union rights granted under the National Labor Relations Act. Supervisors are defined under the NLRA as “any individual having authority, in the interest of the employer, to hire, transfer, suspend, lay off, recall, promote, discharge, assign, reward or discipline other employees, or responsibly direct them, or to adjust their grievances, or effectively to recommend such action.” The regional NLRB director, in a recent board decision on the Sodexo case, agreed that supervisors shouldn’t be included in the bargaining unit at Rollins College on the basis that they lack “commonality” with the other dining workers (for instance, how much they earn and workplace responsibilities). Region 12 director David Cohen, however, disputed that they qualified as “supervisors” under the NLRA definition. “There is no evidence that food supervisors have the authority to transfer, suspend, lay off, recall, promote, discharge employees, or to adjust their grievances, or to effectively recommend such actions,” Cohen wrote.

A couple of workers, unnamed in the document, testified to the NLRB that they’d been verbally disciplined by supervisors over things like food safety and dress code. But Cohen said there was “insufficient evidence” of those verbal warnings showing up in actual disciplinary records. One worker testified to a NLRB hearing officer that he had been directed by supervisors to remove pro-union pins from his uniform on account of it being a “food safety concern.” The worker was later confronted by a chef and supervisor (also an attendee of the “No Union” rally, vehemently against unionization), who explained to him the employer’s guidelines on jewelry. The worker confronted described the interaction as “friendly”but “passive aggressive.”He said it felt “like” a warning. Another worker, a cook, said he was told by a manager and a supervisor that it was unacceptable to talk about the “union vote” during the workday. There’s no evidence, however, that the cook was written up for it. One worker also testified that a supervisor told him that they wouldn’t be able to join the union because they, as a supervisor, had access to payroll. A manager disputed this in her own testimony, which the NLRB accepted. The NLRB’s board decision on the bargaining unit, which included election dates, wasn’t

released until early November. The procedures of the election were contested. Sodexo requested that the election occur in-person, while the union requested a vote-bymail election. Mail ballot elections can be safer for workers, because this allows them to vote in the privacy of their homes, instead of a location where they can be surveilled by company managers. Officially, however, the union argued that an in-person election would be “particularly problematic” because its workforce includes many employees for whom English is not their primary language, or who do not speak English at all. Cohen, from the NLRB, disputed the idea that this would be a major issue. In a decision dated Nov. 2, Cohen ordered an in-person election on campus, subject to written permission from Rollins College. The college agreed, and the election took place on Thursday and Saturday. Turnout was high — about 80% of workers eligible to vote cast their ballots. The final tally was 33–39, a loss for the union. Both parties (the union and employer) have five business days to file objections to the election. If no objections are filed, the result will be certified. Meanwhile, the unfair labor practice complaint filed by the union in May, over Sodexo’s alleged violations of federal labor law, has yet to get a hearing as of publication. mschueler@orlandoweekly.com

Friends of Nicole Darden Creston put the spotlight on the WMFE reporter this week with a musical fundraiser at Blue Bamboo Even though streaming subscriptions

allow me to access audio from anywhere around the globe, most of the time you’ll find my stereo tuned to WMFE 90.7-FM. Orlando’s own National Public Radio affiliate station has long been the omnipresent soundtrack of my daily life, and for more than a decade the voice I’ve most looked forward to hearing on its frequency has been Nicole Darden Creston’s. If you’re a fellow fan of her work as local anchor for headlining programs like “Morning Edition” and “All Things Considered,” you may have noticed that she’s been absent from the airwaves for many weeks. Creston recently broke her silence about SIBO, the little-understood illness that has sidelined her, via a Facebook post and GoFundMe campaign. And over Thanksgiving weekend, her partner, Julian Bond, shared additional insights into her struggle with me ahead of his Dec. 2 fundraising concert for her at Blue Bamboo Center for the Arts (8 p.m. Saturday at 1905 Kentucky Ave., Winter Park; bluebambooartcenter.com). Most Central Floridians know Creston for her career in radio journalism, which began 20 years ago at WDBO. But I’ve been a friend of “Nikki” for even longer. We first met through the extended theatrical family that was Theatre Downtown. After initially bonding over Buffy’s musical episode, we collaborated in the early aughts on edgy original plays about porn stars and psychopaths, where she proved herself among Orlando’s most fearless and formidable actors. It was around that same time — although in a very different theatrical context — that Creston and Bond first met, while they were both working for the Titanic artifact exhibition during its tenure in I-Drive’s long-demolished Mercado complex.

Local radio reporter and actor Nicole Darden Creston | Photo courtesy Julian Bond

“I was brought on initially to arrange and produce music for that; then they found out that I was also an actor,” recalls Bond, who is today a sought-after composer/arranger and pianist. “I was a Titanic enthusiast many, many years — a ‘rivet head,’ as some people call it — and I was thrilled when this exhibit [opened] and I wanted to be part of it. … Then Nikki came on as an actor, and she and I became very good friends very quickly. And we stayed friends during my time there, but then I moved on to other things, and we lost contact for some considerable years.” In 2017, the pair reconnected after nearly two decades through a group chat about feeding their mutual friend’s cat, and realized they were living two blocks apart. “I went to visit her at WMFE, which was just up the road from where I used to live,” says Bond, “and we just reformed our friendship, which then blossomed into something greater.” By then, Creston was already an established reporter, appearing on Nancy Grace’s, Greta Van Susteren’s and Maury Povich’s shows during her coverage of the Casey Anthony trial. She’s been recognized by her peers with prestigious awards for political, public affairs and features reporting, including honors for her anniversary coverage of the Pulse nightclub tragedy. But, as Bond says, “Nikki does not trumpet her awards at all; she doesn’t wear them on her sleeve in the slightest.” Instead of chasing splashier stories, Creston now literally shines a “Spotlight” (the name of her weekly arts and culture segment on WMFE) on those who are otherwise overlooked. “Nikki is definitely driven by a passion to make other people’s lives better. She is devoted to elevating voices that are not often heard,” says Bond, adding, “she’s limited in how much advocacy she can engage in as long as she’s working for an unbiased news outlet, but given free rein, she would certainly want to champion the

causes of those less represented.” Unfortunately, after years of advocating for others, Creston now needs aid herself, after contracting a confounding condition called small intestinal bacterial overgrowth [SIBO]. An excess of bad gastrointestinal microflora is robbing her body of nutrients, resulting in severe pain and malnutrition, and many doctors don’t even understand how to diagnose it. “It’s not only physically draining for her, but also it’s been emotionally crippling, because there hasn’t been an end in sight,” says Bond. After several failed initial treatments, Creston has been placed on an “elemental diet” of putrid-tasting powder-based drinks; a three- or four-day supply costs $125 (plus tax and shipping). An upcoming consultation at the Mayo Clinic will offer additional options, she hopes, but in the meantime her bills are adding up. “Even with health insurance, because so much of this requires specialist treatment, only so much of it is covered,” Bond says — and the life-saving drinks are excluded.“Nikki is not somebody who will easily ask for help; in fact, she blanches at the thought of a handout. However, her friends and I love her and want to do what we can.” In addition to the GoFundMe organized by her former WMFE colleague Crystal Chavez, Bond’s musical fundraiser on Saturday at Blue Bamboo will try to offset Creston’s medical expenses, while also raising her spirits. “Some of it will be unplanned; some of it will be serious. A lot of it will be very silly. Most of it will be Christmas-y, or at least holiday-based,”says Bond, whose “Unscripted” improv show was a hit at the last Orlando Fringe.“Even the smallest donation is not only appreciated financially, but also is like a greeting card to Nikki that says ‘I’m thinking about you and I care,’ which in terms of [her] overall health and recuperation is enormous.” skubersky@orlandoweekly.com orlandoweekly.com ● NOV. 29-DEC. 5, 2023 ● ORLANDO WEEKLY

AGAINST THE TIDE

Unlike so many Edgewater Drive joints, the Current isn’t red-sauce Italian — will College Parkers take to it? BY FAIYAZ KARA

M

ike Smith went to Edgewater High School and bought his first house on Princeton Street, so it makes sense that he’d open his first full-fledged restaurant — the Current Seafood Counter — in College Park as well. If the moniker rings familiar, it’s because Smith operates a stall by the same name at Henry’s Depot in Sanford. In September 2020, I sharknadoed through a blackened mahi-mahi sandwich there, along with some shrimp that Smith butterflied, battered and fried like a champ. But being a big fish on Edgewater Drive can pose a challenge. For one, there are inherent risks in opening a restaurant in the downtown enclave that isn’t Italian-leaning — just ask the owners of Honolulu Harry’s, Graffiti Junktion, El Vic’s, RusTeak, China, Kingfish Grill and Jade Sushi, all of which recently shuttered. In fact, the Current moved into the Jade space. They’ve revamped the interior with all the coastal vibes and, for now, it appears as though College Parkers are taking to the restaurant.

The menu above the ship-lapped counter is a lot more extensive, as you can imagine, than the one at Henry’s Depot, though Smith still sources from Ocean Fresh in Winter Springs. We started with the trio of corpulent shrimp-and-pepper fritters ($9) stuffed with golden niblets of sweet corn and served with a sriracha aioli. I preferred them as a side for the fried grouper sandwich ($16) than I did the smaller hush puppies, fine though the puppies were. Hell, I bypassed the Old Bay fries (they weren’t chips) served with the beer-battered haddock ($17) in favor of those peppery, shrimpy little orbs. A sweetish tartar sauce and cole slaw accompanied the half-pound fried haddock fillet, and it made for a solid lunch. Also solid: lobster rolls ($28). Here, they skirt controversy by offering versions to appease both Maine and Connecticut palates. For the former, a quarter-pound of claw meat is tossed in seasoned mayo and served on a toasted roll. The chunks of lobster are sizable, and the sandwich isn’t overly laden with mayo. For Nutmeggers, Maine’s finest catch comes sauteed in brown

butter. If you ask me which version I like more, I’d honestly tell you: both. And if you ask me about two more shellfish delights I’d order every time, I’d call out the skewer of blackened shrimp ($9) and the plate of middleneck clams ($11) sauteed in a lemon-butter-garlic-white wine sauce. As flawless as the half-dozen or so shrimp were, we couldn’t help but dip the little critters into the clams’sauce. Oddly, it seemed as though the grill had imparted some flavor to the clams, though we were told the clams were simply sauteed. Either way, get ’em both, and throw in a side of fried okra while you’re at it. The crispy-creamy poppers lend a little Southern verve to this self-described “northeast coast style seafood counter restaurant.” So does the Key lime pie ($7) though it’s not made in house. But don’t let that be a deterrent. When Lombardi’s Seafood, just a couple of miles away, closed the café portion of its business two years ago, it left a hole for folks craving a decent piece of fish and some fritters. Fortunately, the Current fills it, and then some. The big question is whether or not College Parkers will support the venture. I will say this — for neighborhood denizens to willingly overlook the restaurant would be a case of swimming against the current.

Natalie Portman and Julianne Moore star in May December | courtesy photo

NOTES FROM A SCANDAL

In May December, Todd Haynes turns an old tabloid tale into a first-rate sexual thriller, just like they used to make BY KAYLA MCCULLOCH

“Y

It’s not surprising that Elizabeth’s arrival has Elizabeth (Natalie Portman) in Todd Haynes’ May December. Ostensibly, she’s talking about people nervous. Alas, as is the duty of any good circumstance for her remark to be anywhere (albeit kooky) housewife in the Hostess City of the South, Gracie welcomes her guest with open near surface level. You see, they’re making a movie out of arms, tight lips and a guarded attitude. Whether it comes from the film’s unsettling a local woman’s headline-grabbing affair with a middle-school student, and Elizabeth score, its jarring interludes with creepy-crawly is starring as the lead. Gracie is the inspi- close-ups or all those backhanded pleasantries ration for that role. starts to feel worse than bad manners. It feels dangerous. As Elizabeth searches for the most honest angle to embody the role of Gracie, Gracie works to make sure it’s never found. With notso-subtle shades of David Lynch’s Mulholland Drive and Ingmar Bergman’s Persona — not to mention the ur-text for this type of film, Alfred Hitchcock’s Vertigo — May December takes what we know about the trope of the blonde/brunette doppelgänger and uses it to tell a story about telling a story. While Haynes’ interests here are decidedly not as nightmarish as Lynch’s or Bergman’s (and far less twisty than Hitchcock’s), he still explores the age-old idea of dark doubles through the visual motif of hair color (plus plenty of reflections, twins and mimicry to drive the point home). Haynes also toyed with this hair color thing in his 2015 Carol. The age gap romance, too. And yet, if ever there were an anti-Carol, it would be May December. Haynes traverses similar themes across both films, but the approach is much more lurid than languid this go-round. Forget about the gentle, literary aesthetic Haynes so beautifully brought to the pair of star-crossed lovers in midcentury New York. His latest offers the kind of outrageously brash take on sexual promiscuity more often found in a Lifetime movie. I don’t mean to use that Lifetime label as an insult, either. Until recently, the network was one of the only places I could find shamelessly sensual, hilariously campy melodramas en masse. The tides are turning, however — and it’s not just Haynes’s doing. From film historian Karina Longworth’s recent deep dive into the erotic thrillers of the ’80s and ’90s on her podcast “You Must Remember This” to the return of genre greats like Adrian Lyne and his underrated (and, I must say, unceremoniously dropped) Hulu release Deep Water, May December fits snugly into a growing trend. Right when I feared the subgenre dead, Haynes has used his auteur status to bolster the erotic thriller — and, in doing so, quenched modern audiences’ very real thirst for sinister, seedy, seductive fare. It’s one of his strongest, most intoxicating works to date. To be clear, Haynes is not some provocateur hoping to resuscitate a sordid style of film for shock value alone. May December is more complex, more layered, more intelligent than that. Above all else, it’s a titillating exploration of the nuances of truth. Elizabeth and Gracie, the film’s doubles, can be seen as the two sides of the scandalous story. There’s the version Gracie tells — her truth, no matter how honest or dishonest that may be — and there’s the objective truth that Elizabeth seeks. The story being told and the reality of what actually went down are not the same. Cover-ups, threats, deception, bottled emotions … all come with the price of protecting some form of truth or another. Remember: When telling a life story, you do it nicely, ’cause it really does matter how it looks. feedback@orlandoweekly.com orlandoweekly.com ● NOV. 29-DEC. 5, 2023 ● ORLANDO WEEKLY

[ film + tv ] The Shepherd — Ben Radcliffe and John Travolta co-star in a short based on British writer Frederick Forsyth’s 1975 novella, in which a British RAF pilot gets help from a mysterious stranger when his plane gets into trouble on Christmas Eve 1957. (Don’t worry, it isn’t Santa, although you can bet Bob Iger “had notes.”) (Disney+) Sweet Home — Season 2 finds South Korean teen Cha Hyun-soo (Song Kang) learning that the monsters who had overrun his apartment building have now set their sights on conquering the entire world. Jeez, the very least they could do is return his colander on the way out. (Netflix) Timeless Heroes — Certain clickbait sites are saying the mere existence of this full-length doc about the creation of Indiana Jones means Harrison Ford has gone back on his word to never appear as the character again. Then again, they also believe Kathleen Kennedy is stealing their mail. COUCHSURFING

Streaming premieres you won’t want to miss this week. BY STEVE S CH N EIDER

Premieres Wednesday:

American Symphony — The documentary cameras roll as composer and Colbert bandleader Jon Batiste prepares to unveil his self-written symphony at Carnegie Hall; meanwhile, his girlfriend undergoes treatment for her second bout with cancer. At least now we know there’s something worse than dating a musician. (Netflix) Aruna’s Magic — Here’s a Brazilian series about a teenager whose power of “hyperempathy” puts her in thrall to a trio of witches. I guess Marianne Williamson has sisters we didn’t know about or something. (Disney+) Bad Surgeon: Love Under the Knife — Peek through your fingers at the true story of surgeon Paolo Macchiarini, who got his ass thrown in jail for implanting artificial windpipes in a bunch of patients who ended up dropping dead. Best detail: the inspirational wall hanging in his cell that reads “Just Breathe.” (Netflix) Slow Horses — Gary Oldman’s group of MI5 bottom-feeders find themselves in the

midst of a murky conspiracy in Season 3. But shouldn’t murky conspiracies be above their pay grade? They should probably only have to handle, like, mildly filmy conspiracies and stuff. (Apple TV+)

Premieres Thursday:

Bookie — Stand-up comic and actor Sebastian Maniscalco stars in a comedy series about a bookie who’s worried he’ll be out of business when his state legalizes sports gambling. The show reunites creator Chuck Lorre with Charlie Sheen, the latter playing himself in a recurring role that pokes fun at his own penchant for gambling. Which, as we all know, is absolutely the most egregious and lampoonable thing he’s ever done. (Max) Family Switch — On the cusp of Christmas, a mom and dad swap bodies with their kids in this vehicle for Ed Helms and Jennifer Garner. I know what you’re thinking: Didn’t she sort of do this already in 13 Going on 30? Oh wait, you aren’t. What you’re really asking yourself is “Who’s Jennifer Garner?” (Netflix) Obliterated — Imagine you’re on a crack

Special Forces team that just got done whooping it up in Vegas after saving the city from a nuclear attack. Now imagine you have to sober up good and quick because you’ve learned the threat is still active. Sounds like your course of action is clear: Pass the buck to Tom Cruise, gulp a handful of Tylenol and get ready to check out the Sphere! (Netflix) Wild Crime — With its third season, the series that tracks criminal behavior in the great outdoors changes its focus from America’s national parks to our natural forests. I think we’re about to learn Yogi Bear has some relatives who are even more mobbed up than he is. (Hulu)

Premieres Friday:

Candy Cane Lane — It’s a mini Boomerang reunion as director Reginald Hudlin, star Eddie Murphy and producer Brian Grazer reconvene to tell the tale of a homeowner whose efforts to win a house-decorating contest accidentally bring the 12 Days of Christmas to life in human form. Hey, remember when Eddie was supposed to be enjoying some sort of career renaissance? Now all you can hear is the sound of geese a-laying. (Prime Video) May December — Natalie Portman plays an actor who gets cast in the role of a real-life former scandal queen (Julianne Moore). Nice to see director Todd Haynes is still doing something positive with his life, when at this point he could easily be drowning himself in bourbon and grumbling, “I was playing with Barbies before any of y’all motherfuckers.” (Netflix)

Premieres Saturday:

Doctor Who: Wild Blue Yonder — Returning showrunner Russell T. Davies calls this second of three 60th-anniversary specials “darker” than last week’s The Star Beast and “genuinely weird.” Come on, Russ, give us a glimmer: Are we talking Crispin Glover weird, or just Kelly-LeBrock-science-project weird? (Disney+)

Premieres Monday:

Dew Drop Diaries — Changes are afoot for our trio of apprentice faeries in Season 2, including the arrival of a male cousin while they’re trying to learn to fly. Surely these will be received as pressing matters by your preschooler, but wait until they find out about that bad habit boys have of barging into the bathroom while you’re trying to read a home pregnancy test. (Netflix)

Premieres Tuesday:

Geddy Lee Asks: Are Bass Players Human Too? — Rush mainstay Geddy’s interviews with Krist Novoselic of Nirvana, Melissa Auf der Maur of Hole, Robert Trujillo of Metallica and Les Claypool of Primus will try to convince you the answer is “yes.” Waiting in the wings: Flea, with a rubber chicken tied to his dick. (Paramount+) Isabel Preysler: My Christmas — The SpanishFilipina aristocrat/media personality — who also happens to be the ex-wife of Julio Iglesias and the mother of three of his children, including Enrique — is getting two whole episodes of reality programming to show the world how she prepares for the holidays. Given that she also has three other kids, I’m assuming it involves reading the story of the virgin birth while mainlining sangria and chuckling ruefully. (Disney+)

Wynton Marsalis and the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra will get festive at the Dr. Phil | Photo by Clay McBride

DECK THE HALLS

Wynton Marsalis and the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra make for a bold, blue and brassy night of holiday sounds BY SHELTON H ULL

W

hen Wynton Marsalis leads the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra to the Dr. Phillips Center, it’s basically a working vacation for them. The Marsalis family has been professionally acquainted with Florida since the 1980s, and this current tour also includes stops in Gainesville, Fernandina and Palm Beach. Their “Big Band Holidays” show will hit a dozen of the hipper Southern cities before they return home to New York, where this same crack unit played 61 shows in their 2022-23 season, with nearly 50,000 tickets sold. Jazz at Lincoln Center was founded in 1987, under Wynton Marsalis’ direction. Its clout grew rapidly, and it’s now become a cultural organization on par with some of its neighbors in the massive 13-plus-acre Lincoln Center space, which includes Juilliard, the New York

Philharmonic, the New York City Ballet and the Metropolitan Opera. Thirty-five years since its inception, JLC scored nearly $41 million in revenue last year, with over $230 million in net assets. The Orchestra remains among the very best in the business, now or ever, but that’s only a small part of their operation. Since its founding in 1988, the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra has released at least 32 albums, not counting the 56 released under Marsalis’ own name, or the 20 others recorded in collaboration with legends like Kathleen Battle, Art Blakey, Eric Clapton, Placido Domingo, Dizzy Gillespie, Herbie Hancock, Joe Henderson, Shirley Horn, Elvin Jones, Willie Nelson, Marcus Roberts and even Yo-Yo Ma, as well as his own family, most of whom have also played here before. The current JLCO lineup includes trumpeters Marsalis, Ryan Kisor, Kenny Rampton and

Marcus Printup (an alumnus of the University of North Florida in Jacksonville); trombonists Chris Crenshaw, Vincent Gardner and Elliot Mason; Victor Goines, Sherman Irby, Ted Nash and Paul Nedzela on saxophones, clarinets and flute; vocalist Ashley Pezzotti; and a rhythm section of pianist Dan Nimmer, bassist Carlos Henriquez and drummer Obed Calvaire. The regular group is augmented by another three dozen in their circles, who may appear at any time. Wynton Marsalis and his brothers Branford, Delfeayo and Jason were all child prodigies, taught by their father Ellis Marsalis Jr. (19342020), himself a veteran jazz pianist whose résumé went back to the genre’s 1950s peak. They emerged en masse in the 1980s, bringing New Orleans swagger and chops for days. Most important, perhaps, was their ability to explain the music and situate it perfectly in the broader

context of Black culture, at the exact time when the rise of hip-hop was forcing a critical reassessment of everything that came before. Collectively, Marsalis and his team have led the way in continually reasserting the commercial viability of jazz, while also helping to develop the infrastructure through which new jazz talent will continue to develop for decades to come. That process continues, in real time, right here on Saturday night. The JLCO’s Big Band Holidays program promises expertly orchestrated version of holiday chestnuts “both sacred and secular,” delivered with verve and swing. Guest vocalist Pezzotti will sit in with the band for a few carols too. Get ready for a jazzy Yule. music@orlandoweekly.com

[ local music ] “Desert Sky” checks the paranormal box with lyrics about a couple on a transcendental odyssey through the desert in pursuit of their cosmic origins. Sonically, the song is a textbook shoegaze drive, with layers of fog thicker and woozier than ever heard from the band before. Between the ethereal, starlit melodies and the gorgeously dense haze, Saucers are now drifting at an altitude closer to the heavens of My Bloody Valentine than their earthier hybrid of noise and 1990s alt-rock from before. “Desert Sky” is the first, very auspicious look at an album’s worth of Saucers Over Washington songs already completed. The single now streams everywhere. But on Bandcamp, it’s available as both a name-your-price download and a very limited cassette release packaged like an old-school top-secret government file that probably (hopefully) won’t self-destruct in five seconds.

You don’t have to wonder what David Duchovny would sound like as a musician because the X-Files star has already crossed that divide. But ponder what Fox Mulder might sound like if he had his own band, and then things get kinda interesting. Now if that band were a shoegaze act, well, that’s the stuff of absolute fanfic fantasy. As it turns out, that hypothetical would probably sound a lot like actual Orlando band Saucers Over Washington. That’s because this emerging act is built on the dual pillars of shoegaze and aliens. If this seems particularly niche, just wait; that’s just the welcome mat to this rabbit hole. Pairing those two interests began first as an idea for an album but ultimately blossomed into a blanket concept for the band itself. Though that sounds a little left-field, it’s not when you factor in that bandleader Nik Sidella has been formally merging those two specific pet obsessions for years in not just Saucers Over Washington but in the “Aliengazing Podcast,” a show he co-hosts with Tom Wilkerson that features both UFO discussion and shoegaze music as if they were natural twins. Well, Saucers Over Washington may be onto something. Saucers have been working to find new, discrete footing since departing their previous guise as indie-punkers the Grizzly Atoms. In late 2021, they officially marked that chapter

Total Chroma, Warm Frames, Mother Juno, Tiger Beat, Haize, Snotnoze Saleem: There are two distinct sides to this bill, and both will be represented well. Vancouver’s Total Chroma and Orlando’s Mother Juno will bring the electronic edge with their penetrating EBM. On the other end, the no-wave noise (and double duty!) of Warm Frames and the art-brut rock & roll of Tiger Beat will serve up rock in some of its rawest, most thrilling forms. It’ll be a beautiful collision. (8 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 30, Stardust Video & Coffee, $10)

Sonic. Acous.tic Re.Form: Orlando promoter the Modern Music Movement is smashing boxes again with this latest local showcase, a loaded and adventurous bill that defies both genre and convention. Besides the indie sounds of Jem, it only gets increasingly out there with the ambient drones of J. Matz. Product. It’s one of the week’s most intriguing bills, and it’s free. They come packing sonic fury, crusading conviction to defend the marginalized and the vocal endorsement of high-profile allies like Shirley Manson, Screaming Females’ Marissa Paternoster, Thursday’s Geoff Rickly, Fucked Up’s Damian Abraham, Soul Glo, Melt-Banana and Gouge Away. In alternative/underground DIY circles, nothing is permanent. Not a space, not a label, not a band, not a zine. Or, as it turns out, a drag night. Barely a couple of months after we wrote about SpikeFest, an alternative drag event that had Austin’s Coffee a-heavin’, the announcement came last week: “SpikeFest is dead, long live SpikeFest.” (We’re paraphrasing.) Though there is always a possibility that, like any good horror movie, a mangled hand — with immaculately manicured claws — will burst out of the ground in “The End … Or Is It?” fashion. In the meantime, SpikeFest organizer Bad Pup Rocky is throwing a new event at the Woodshed, Smutball. No frills, no bells and whistles. It’s been going strong for decades, so why mess with the formula? And the early start time is no joke; these people are serious. 7 a.m., Central Florida Fairgrounds, 4603 W. Colonial Drive, orlandorecordshow.com, $3. — MM

ORLANDO WEEKLY ● NOV. 29-DEC. 5, 2023 ● orlandoweekly.com

[ free will astrology ] BY ROB BREZSNY

SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21): Sagittarian poet

Nina Cassian said, “I promise to make you so alive that the fall of dust on furniture will deafen you.” I think she meant she would fully awaken the senses of her readers. She would boost our capacity for enchantment and entice us to feel interesting emotions we had never experienced. As we communed with her beautiful self-expression, we might even reconfigure our understanding of who we are and what life is about. I am pleased to tell you, Sagittarius, that even if you’re not a writer, you now have an enhanced ability to perform these same services — both for yourself and for others.

CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19): “Sometimes I get

lonesome for a storm,” says Capricorn singersongwriter Joan Baez. “A full-blown storm where everything changes.” That approach has worked well for her. At age 82, she has released 30 albums and is a member of the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. She has recorded songs in eight languages and has been honored by Amnesty International for her work on behalf of human rights. If you’re feeling resilient — which I think you are — I recommend that you, too, get lonesome for a storm. Your life could use some rearrangement. If you’re not feeling wildly bold and strong, maybe ask the gods for a mild squall.

AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18): Science educator Neil deGrasse Tyson tells us that water molecules we drink have “passed through the kidneys of Socrates, Genghis Khan and Joan of Arc.” The same prodigious truth applies to the air we breathe: It has “passed through the lungs of Napoleon, Beethoven and Abraham Lincoln.” Tyson would have also been accurate if he said we have shared water and air that has been inside the bodies of virtually every creature who has ever lived. I bring these facts to your attention in the hope of inspiring you to deepen your sense of connectedness to other beings. Now is an excellent time to intensify your feelings of kinship with the web of life. Here’s the practical value of doing that: You will attract more help and support into your life. PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20): I am saying a prayer

for you. I pray to the Fates that you will not accept lazy or careless efforts from others. You won’t allow their politeness to be a cover-up for manipulativeness. I also pray that you will cultivate high expectations for yourself. You won’t be an obsessive perfectionist, but will be devoted to excellence. All your actions will be infused with high integrity. You will conscientiously attend to every detail with the faith that you are planting seeds that will bloom beautifully in the future.

ARIES (March 21-April 19): As a child, I loved to

go to a meadow and whirl around in spirals until I got so dizzy, I fell. As I lay on the ground, the earth, sky and sun reeled madly, and I was no longer just a pinpoint of awareness lodged inside my body, but was an ecstatically undulating swirl in the kaleidoscopic web of life. Now, years later, I’ve discovered many of us love spinning. Scientists postulate humans have a desire for the intoxicating vertigo it brings. I would never recommend you do what I did as a kid; it could be dangerous for some of you. But if it’s safe and the spirit moves you, do it! Or at least imagine yourself doing it. Do you know about the Sufi Whirling Dervishes who use spinning as a meditation? (Read here: tinyurl.com/joyofwhirling and tinyurl.com/ sufispinning)

TAURUS (April 20-May 20): Your power creature in the coming weeks will not be an eagle, wolf, bear or salmon. I don’t advise you to dream of being a wild horse, tiger or crocodile. Instead, I invite you to cultivate a deep bond with the mushroom family. Why? Now is a favorable time to be like the mushrooms that keep the earth fresh. In wooded areas, they eat away dead trees and leaves, preventing larger and larger heaps of compost from piling up. They keep the soil healthy and make nutrients available for growing things. Be like those mushrooms, Taurus. Steadily and relentlessly rid your world of the defunct and decaying parts — thereby stimulating fertility. GEMINI (May 21-June 20): Gemini novelist Geraldine McCaughrean wrote, “Maybe courage is like memory — a muscle that needs exercise to get strong. So I decided that maybe if I started in a small way, I could gradually work my way up to being brave.” That is an excellent prescription for you: the slow, incremental approach to becoming bolder and pluckier. For best results, begin practicing on mild risks and mellow adventures. Week by week, month by month, increase the audacious beauty of your schemes and the intensity of your spunk and fortitude. By mid-2024, you will be ready to launch a daring project. CANCER (June 21-July 22): Cancerian neurologist

and author Oliver Sacks worked with people who had unusual neurological issues. His surprising conclusion: “Defects, disorders and diseases can play a paradoxical role, by bringing out latent powers, developments and evolutions that might never be seen in their absence.” In not all cases, but more often than seemed reasonable, he found that disorders could be regarded as creative — “for if they destroy particular paths, particular ways of doing things, they may force unexpected growth.” Your assignment is to meditate on

how the events of your life might exemplify the principle Sacks marvels at: apparent limitations leading to breakthroughs and bonanzas.

LEO (July 23-Aug. 22): I am falling in love with

how deeply you are falling in love with new ways of seeing and understanding yourself. My heart sings as I listen to your heart singing in response to new attractions. Keep it up, Leo! You are having an excellent influence on me. My dormant potentials and drowsy passions are stirring as I behold you waking up and coaxing out your dormant potentials and drowsy passions. Thank you, dear!

VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22): Virgo journalist Sydney J. Harris offered advice I suggest you meditate on. He wrote, “Regret for the things we did can be tempered by time; it is regret for the things we did not do that is inconsolable.” I bring this to your attention because now is a favorable time to take action on things you have not yet done — and should do. If you put definitive plans in motion soon, you will ensure that regret won’t come calling in five years. (P.S.: Amazingly, it’s also an excellent time to dissolve regret you feel for an iffy move you made in the past.) LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22): In contrast to false

stereotypes, Medieval Europeans were not dirty and unhygienic. They made soap and loved to bathe. Another bogus myth says the people of the Middle Ages believed the Earth was flat. But the truth was that most educated folks knew it was round. And it’s questionable to refer to this historical period as backward, since it brought innovations like mechanical timekeepers, movable type, accurate maps, the heavy plow and illuminated manuscripts. In this spirit, and in accordance with astrological omens, I invite you to strip away misconceptions and celebrate actual facts in your own sphere. Be a scrupulous revealer, a conscientious and meticulous truth-teller.

SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21): Scorpio poet John

Berryman said, “To grow, we must travel in the direction of our fears.” Yikes! I personally wouldn’t want to do that kind of growth all the time. I prefer traveling cheerfully in the direction of my hopes and dreams. But then I’m not a Scorpio. Maybe Berryman’s strategy for fulfilling one’s best destiny is a Scorpio superpower. What do you think? One thing I know for sure is that the coming weeks will be an excellent time to reevaluate and reinvent your relationship with your fears. I suggest you approach the subject with a beginner’s mind. Empty yourself of all your previous ideas and be open to healing new revelations. orlandoweekly.com ● NOV. 29-DEC. 5, 2023 ● ORLANDO WEEKLY
