Orange County housing advocates rushed to shelter unhoused people ahead of Hurricane Milton, DeSantis publicly dismisses fossil fuel use as cause of climate change after the storm, and other news you may have missed.
BY CHLOE GREENBERG, MCKENNA SCHUELER, AND THE FLORIDA PHOENIX
» More than 3 million Florida residents lost power after Hurricane Milton Hurricane Milton slammed into Florida near Siesta Key late last Wednesday night as a Category 3 storm that brought with it major destruction and power outages across the state. As of the following morning, more than 3 million Florida residents were left without power, including hundreds of thousands without power in Central Florida. As of Saturday morning, OUC said they had restored power to 98 percent of their customers who experienced outages. The company expected to have full power restoration for all customers by the time you read this. Two other utility companies, Duke Energy and Florida Power & Light, also reported outages in Central Florida post-Milton, affecting thousands of customers. In other harder-hit counties, including Manatee, Sarasota, Hillsborough and Pasco counties, the road to recovery is expected to be longer. Milton hit the Orlando area as a Category 1 storm. Damage to our area was not as bad as some had feared, beyond flooding in some vulnerable areas and downed trees, power lines and debris. As of Monday morning, one storm-related death had been reported in Orange County.
» Social advocacy groups rushed to shelter unhoused people ahead of storm Ahead of Milton’s arrival late Wednesday, social advocacy groups in the Central Florida region raced to provide information about the storm and available shelter options for people living on the streets and sidewalks or in the woods. As of January, the region spanning Orange, Osceola and Seminole counties counted about 1,200 people without shelter on any given day. Advocates feared that the strong winds and flooding risk predicted from Hurricane Milton would threaten these folks’ safety, so they worked with local government officials and partner agencies to ensure free Lynx bus transportation to shelters, and worked with existing shelters to expand capacity ahead of the storm. This effort was spearheaded by the Homeless Services Network of Central Florida, which has for months warned that existing homeless shelters are lacking in capacity. They’ve also advocated against punitive laws that criminalize homelessness, including a recently enacted state law that bans people from sleeping or camping on public property.
» DeSantis posits fossil fuel use causing climate change and government ‘weather control’ as equally baseless claims
Gov. Ron DeSantis dismissed the idea that burning fossil fuels affects the frequency or intensity of hurricanes last Thursday, after Hurricane Milton racked the state, when a reporter asked him about a conspiracy theory that the government can control hurricanes — a baseless theory he also dismissed. Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene, a Georgia Republican, was among those posting the weather-control theory on social media. “Yes they can control the weather. It’s ridiculous for anyone to lie and say it can’t be done,” she said in an X post. DeSantis straddled the issue during a Fort Pierce news conference called to update the public on Milton recovery. “This is on both sides. You kind of have, some people think government can do this [control the weather], and then others think it’s all because of fossil fuels,” he said. “The reality is, is what we see. There’s precedent for all this in history. Like it is hurricane season, you are going to have tropical weather.” A similar claim was echoed by conspiracy theorist Alex Jones, who said the federal government could have stopped Hurricane Helene, which caused catastrophic damage from Florida’s Big Bend through to the hills of North Carolina and Tennessee.
» DeSantis doesn’t think Florida should limit development in areas susceptible to natural disasters
Days after Hurricane Milton caused widespread damage to areas still rebuilding after Hurricane Ian two years ago, Gov. Ron DeSantis dismissed a suggestion that the state limit development in coastal areas vulnerable to dangerous tropical storms. Despite the damage, DeSantis said government prohibitions on rebuilding in areas repeatedly demolished by natural disasters are off the table. “The reality is, is people work their whole lives and work hard to be able to live in environments that are really, really nice, and they have a right to make those decisions with their property as they see fit,” DeSantis said in response to a question during a news conference in Bradenton Beach. “It is not the role of government to forbid them or to force them to dispose or utilize their property in a way that they do not think is best for them,” the governor said. DeSantis said the demand to live in Florida can override the threat of natural disasters. “These things are very tough.
What I see is people have a lot of resilience,” DeSantis said, summarizing damage from hurricanes Ian and Michael, which heavily damaged the Panhandle in 2018. “And like, within two weeks [after Ian] you had people buying up homes. I mean, people wanted to get down there. So, I think that there’s always going to be a demand to live in a beautiful part of the world.” According to the governor’s office, more than 1,600 people and 140 pets had been rescued from floodwaters, rubble or other hazards by Friday morning.
» Florida GOP boasts 1 million more registered voters than Democrats ahead of November election
With the November elections nearing, the Republican Party of Florida held a registration advantage of nearly 1.055 million voters over the Florida Democratic Party as of Sept. 30, according to data posted to the state Division of Elections website. The data showed the Republican Party with 5,455,480 “active” registered voters, while the Democratic Party had 4,400,561. Another 3,584,982 voters were registered without party affiliation, while 404,890 were registered with third parties. Democrats historically led in voter registration in Florida, but Republicans overtook them in 2021 and have steadily added to the margin. Republicans hold all statewide offices and dominate the Legislature and the Florida congressional delegation. The Democratic Party has contended that the registration totals are misleading because they don’t include people classified as “inactive” voters, who remain eligible to cast ballots. Republicans held a registration advantage of 1.026 million active voters as of Aug. 31, according to state data.

HARRIS FINDS EDGE OVER ABORTION ISSUE
Reproductive freedom emerges as most important election issue for young women, poll finds
BY ALEX WAYNE AND REBECCA ADAMS
Abortion has emerged as the most important issue in the November election for women under 30, according to a survey by KFF — a notable change since late spring, before Vice President Kamala Harris entered the presidential race.
Nearly four in 10 women under 30 surveyed in September and early October told pollsters that abortion is the most important issue to their vote. Just 20 percent named abortion as their top issue when KFF conducted a similar survey in late May and early June.
The new survey found other shifts among women voters that stand to benefit Harris, including an increase of 24 percentage points in the number of women who said they were satisfied with their choice of candidates and a 19-point increase in the number who said they were more motivated to vote than in previous presidential elections. The changes suggest a significant setback among women in just a few months for former President Donald Trump. “It looks worse for Donald Trump than it did back in June,” said Ashley Kirzinger, director of survey methodology at KFF, a health
Trump says the ruling merely returned the issue to states, and though his positions have often shifted, he has recently promised not to sign a national abortion ban. Harris says she would sign a law restoring nationwide abortion rights.
The former president has made sometimes awkward appeals to women voters.
“You will be protected, and I will be your protector,” Trump told women voters at a rally Sept. 23 in Indiana, Pennsylvania. “Women will be happy, healthy, confident and free. You will no longer be thinking about abortion.”
The KFF poll found that Harris is gaining on Trump among women not just on abortion — a subject the former president tries to downplay, acknowledging its political peril — but also on economic issues, which Trump and his advisers regard as among their strongest arguments for his return to the White House.
Multiple polls have shown that the economy remains a top issue in the election, especially for Black and Hispanic women. About 75 percent of respondents in the KFF survey said they worry about household expenses “a lot” or “some.”
Inflation was the top issue for 36 percent of KFF survey respondents overall, while 13 percent identified abortion as their priority.
About 46 percent of women voters in the new poll said they trust Harris over Trump to address household costs, while 39 percent trust the former president more. Sixteen percent said neither.
In KFF’s previous poll of women in the spring, respondents were nearly evenly split on which party they trusted more to address rising household costs. About 40 percent said they trusted neither party.
On health care costs, Harris holds a significant lead over Trump in the new poll, with 50 percent trusting her more on the issue, 34 percent trusting Trump more, and 16 percent trusting neither.
JUSTICES NIX ABORTION CASE
Florida Supreme Court rejects lawsuit alleging state interference on Amendment 4
The Florida Supreme Court on Thursday unanimously rejected a petition filed by a Palm Beach County attorney alleging that top state officials have improperly tried to interfere with a November referendum on abortion rights.
Adam Richardson, of Lake Worth, filed the petition Sept. 10 amid a controversy about an Agency for Health Care Administration webpage and video public-service announcement about abortion issues.
While the agency contended the information presented facts, critics said it was biased against a ballot measure, known as Amendment 4, that seeks to enshrine abortion rights in the state Constitution.
Richardson, in part, asked the Supreme Court to issue what is known as a writ of quo warranto to Agency for Health Care Administration
information nonprofit that includes KFF Health News. “Harris becoming the Democratic presidential nominee energized women voters in a way that the Biden candidacy had not.”
President Joe Biden abandoned his reelection bid on July 21, under pressure from Democratic Party leaders, after a stumbling performance in a June debate against Trump that reignited concerns about the 81-year-old’s fitness for a second term.
While women are more enthusiastic about voting for Harris than they were for Biden, the election remains close. Harris has a 2.5-point edge in national polls, according to a FiveThirtyEight analysis. Other polls have found a large gender divide in the election, with a majority of women backing Harris and a majority of men backing Trump.
Harris has long been one of the Democratic Party’s foremost advocates for abortion rights, and she has assailed Trump for appointing three conservative justices to the Supreme Court who joined in the 2022 ruling that overturned Roe v. Wade, the landmark 1973 opinion that guaranteed abortion access nationally. Thirteen states have since banned abortion with few exceptions, according to KFF.
Kirzinger said Black women especially prefer Harris on economic issues; for example, they trust the vice president 7-to-1 over Trump on inflation, she said.
More than half of U.S. voters have been women in the last two national elections, according to the Census Bureau.
“A Democratic candidate needs to win women at very high rates and needs to enthuse the base — which largely consists of women,” Kirzinger said. “What we saw in early June was, the Biden candidacy was not doing that. Now it seems the Harris campaign is doing that in multiple different ways; it’s not just abortion. It’s her as a candidate making women more enthusiastic.”
The KFF poll was conducted Sept. 12 to Oct. 1 among 649 women who had been surveyed in the spring, as well as a supplemental sample of 29 Black women registered voters. The margin of error was plus or minus 5 points.
This story originally appeared on KFF. KFF Health News is a national newsroom that produces in-depth journalism about health issues and is one of the core operating programs at KFF — an independent source of health policy research, polling and journalism.
Secretary Jason Weida, Gov. Ron DeSantis and Moody “forbidding them from misusing or abusing their offices to interfere with the election for Amendment 4, and to unravel whatever actions they have already taken to do so.”
The Supreme Court’s main opinion, written by Justice John Couriel, said quo warranto cases have been used to question whether state officials have improperly exercised their power. But the opinion said Richardson’s petition did not follow legal precedent, in part because it was based on a criminal law that limits political activities of government officials.
“For one thing, we have never held that the writ lies to compel the criminal prosecution of a state actor or to enable a private citizen to enforce a state criminal statute,” Couriel wrote. “It is hard to see how he asks us to do anything short of that, for the statute is express about what a violation of its requirements constitutes: ‘a misdemeanor of the first degree.’” Chief Justice Carlos Muniz and Justices Charles Canady, Jamie Grosshans and Meredith Sasso joined the opinion. Judge Renatha Francis wrote a concurring opinion, and Judge Jorge Labarga concurred in the result of the main opinion.

LEADING THE WAY
Trans activist Ashley Figueroa is a grand marshal of this year’s Come Out With Pride parade
BY MATTHEW MOYER
To mark 20 years of Come Out With Pride celebrations in Orlando, COWP organizers have chosen a heady trio of grand marshals for this year’s signature parade: HGTV’s David Bromstad, intersex advocate Juleigh Mayfield and trans activist Ashley Figueroa. Figueroa, a transgender Latina Orlandoan, is very worthy of note. For over eight years now, she has been a blur of nonstop work and community-building in the City Beautiful.
Soon after her own gender transition, Figueroa left her job in banking and began working tirelessly on behalf of the transgender and LGBTQ+ community locally — at different times with Equality Florida, the Contigo Fund, Orlando Trans Collective, the City of Orlando and the organization she co-founded, the Gender Advancement Project. She’s been lauded by the likes of Equality Florida, Watermark
and Honor 41, but for Figueroa it’s not about the awards — rather, she values helping people live their truths joyously without any fear of reprisal. We spoke to Figueroa the day after Milton did a near-miss of Orlando.
We got comparatively lucky with Hurricane Milton, so that gives us a reason to celebrate. Just in time — you’re going to be one of the grand marshals in the Pride Parade!
I’m very excited and looking forward to that experience. I have participated most of my adult life; everybody is celebrating everyone’s pride, and they can be themselves and showcase it. In the times we’re living where trans rights are being threatened and all the anti-trans laws are passed, I think it’s so important to have spaces like this where we can come out and show up and remind everyone that we’re here.
did that for a little bit, and once I got tired of spending so much time at home, I decided to go back to work. In that process of me accepting myself 100% and then leaving banking, I went to a group that was called T Network. It was trans professional individuals and their allies. And through that space, I got to meet other trans individuals, and I also got to learn more about their stories and understand more of the needs of the community.
I started doing community work in healthcare, and I was spearheading a transgender program where we helped individuals change their names, legal names, and in accessing hormone replacement therapy. And that’s how my activism started in the community.
What work went into getting the Gender Advancement Project off the ground?
When I left the healthcare clinic that I was working with their transgender program, I noticed there was nothing that was really led by and for the transgender community. Who better to lead than those that are of experience and understand everything 100% from experience? I decided to establish the Advancement Project along with Nikole Parker, she’s also a co-founder. We did that right during COVID. … We started doing legal name changes for individuals. If an individual comes to us, we’re going to assist them in that process of filling out their paperwork. If they have any questions, we’ll let them know how to go about doing so. And then, if the individual needs financial support, we will help pay for their filing fee, their background check and their new driver’s license or ID.
Pride organizers have over the last few years been making space for trans folks.
This kind of initiative with Come Out With Pride is really important because it’s taking a stance that “they matter, they’re here, and we’re going to give them that space.”
In the state of Florida, the trans community is almost like where the gay community was in New York [decades] ago. I hadn’t felt as hostile of a living situation in society, when it came to my trans identity, until all the anti-trans laws two years ago started passing.
Would you talk about your own personal road to activism and advocacy?
I worked in banking with Fairwinds Credit Union, and I was there for 10 years, I believe. And during that time I started my transition. That’s where my journey started to become my perfect self. I had this thought that I was going to have to leave Orlando and go somewhere else where no one knew me, and start a new life. Through the help of counseling, I realized that I don’t have to do that. I don’t have to leave where I am. I don’t have to, you know, change that aspect of my life just to be my authentic self. I can be my authentic self anywhere.
Eventually, I got tired of sales and wanted to take time off. So I left banking and decided that I wanted to stay at home and be a stepmom. I
You work with several other organizations simultaneously. How do you keep yourself energized and find time and space to breathe?
The way that I balance is honestly understanding that I’m a human being, and there’s only so much that I can do in one day, and understanding there’s times when I need to step back and take a break. Because if you don’t, you get burnt. If you don’t have yourself together, there’s no way that you’re gonna be able to help other people.
The state government in Florida is, at its core right now, transphobic, homophobic, intolerant. So it’s inspiring to see the defiance of transgender folks staying here and claiming their space.
Being visible and living your authentic self creates a change, because individuals are able to see that you’re a human being and you deserve basic human rights, at the very minimum. Allies can help us by speaking up, by understanding. Educate and speak up and take a stance; if you stay quiet, then there’s really nothing that’s going to change. Take the time to get to know a transgender individual. Connect on a personal level to understand that we are totally normal. And show love and support to the transgender individuals in your life.

COME OUT WITH PRIDE 2024
An overview of Central Florida’s go-to LGBTQIA+ pride festival
BY KENDAL ASBURY AND LUCY DILLON
Come Out With Pride is celebrating its 20th anniversary of hosting Orlando’s annual LGBTQIA+ Pride parade and festivities all weekend — and trust us, the stage is set for a party bigger than ever before. The Orlando nonprofit has gathered around National Coming Out Day each October for decades, presenting one of the biggest Pride celebrations in Central Florida.
This year’s Pride celebration theme, “Colors of Courage,” is a reflection of the LGBTQIA+ community’s strength and vibrance. But before the parade kicks off, Orlando is invited to dive into plenty of pre-parade celebrations, including
variety shows, bowling fundraisers, burlesque, bingo parties and more.
COUNTING DOWN TO PRIDE …
While Come Out With Pride’s single-day celebration takes place Saturday, Oct. 19, the lineup of events kicks off much earlier.
Among the associated events, Oct. 16 brings Colors of Courage: Celebrating the Diversity of the LGBTQ+ Community, featuring live music by the Orlando Gay Chorus and the Central Florida Sounds of Freedom. The concert takes place at the First United Methodist Church of Orlando (142 E. Jackson St.) and begins at 7 p.m.
days after National Coming Out Day, thousands of people will take part in Orlando’s Come Out With Pride parade and festival to honor the diverse community in Orlando and around the world.
But before that, drag diva April Fresh hosts a Pineapple Brunch at 10 a.m. at Thornton Park diner Jack &Honey’s (808 E. Washington St.), featuring appearances by Mr. Florida, Bobby Iman, and Zeus Arem. Then the Most Colorful Parade takes an update route, stretching from the intersection of Magnolia Avenue and Washington Street all the way north of Lake Eola toward Robinson Street. The free event’s 2024 iteration boasts a marketplace with more than 250 vendors, the second annual Trans Pride celebration and three stages featuring dozens of musical performances and entertainment. A fireworks show will end the night in the park with a sparkling and colorful bang. Then the official afterparty, Orlando’s Magical Pride After Party 2024 (hosted by One Magical Weekend and Bear Orlando Bear Pride) takes over the Abbey (100 S. Eola Drive) starting at 8 p.m., with a special performance by Ms. Darcel Stevens.
On Sunday, soothe the sunburn at the Recovery Party, 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Hammered Lamb. And don’t miss the 5:30 p.m. screening of Watermark’s documentary film Greetings From Queertown: Orlando at the Plaza Live (425 N. Bumby Ave.).
PROUD BEGINNINGS
That same evening, there’s a party for those over 21 in the Dark Room at The Dust (431 E. Central Blvd.) starting at 8 p.m. The Peek-a BOO-lesque is hosted by BlueStar and will feature performances by Bella Marie, Misstiched, Gabriella Juliet and more. Tickets are $23 in advance and $25 at the door.
Thursday, Oct. 17, offers a few events to choose from. There will be a Chappell Roan-themed Pride Bingo and dance party event at the Gnarly Barley at 6:30 p.m. (1407 N. Orange Ave.), followed by a dance parade down the block to the Hammered Lamb to continue the party (1235 N. Orange Ave.).
Watermark hosts a Movies Out Loud screening in Savoy Orlando’s Starlite Room (1913 N. Orange Ave.) at the same time that day. The feature film will be Another Gay Movie, with Sabrina Ambra and drag icon Trixie Deluxxe providing commentary on the comedy.
Start the weekend right with the Pride KickOff Party Friday night at 6 p.m. at the Veranda in Thornton Park (111 N. Summerlin Ave.) Celebrating LGBTQ+ liberation, the first part of the night is free and open to everyone above 18.
And the all-new Brown Sugar Factory follow-up event hosted at High Tide rooftop bar (33 W. Church St.) is a sweet afterparty specifically designed for LGBTQ+ women of color.
THE BIG DAY
From noon to 10 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 19, eight
Celebrations of gay and lesbian pride date back to more than three decades ago in the City Beautiful. In 1991, the Orlando Regional Pride group began hosting small parades around the city every October, garnering a gradual increase in support with each passing celebration. Support became so great that a need for a larger space to celebrate sprouted in the mid-2000s. In October 2005, the first Come Out With Pride parade drew a crowd of about 10,000 attendees. The event was held on the ninth day of the month to align with National Coming Out Day, and has been held on or around that day ever since. Through the years, the spirit of Pride in Central Florida did not change — but attendance levels certainly did. By 2007, Pride events moved to Lake Eola, a shift that brought increased sponsorship opportunities and national attention that lured Pride-goers from around the country to Orlando.
More than 220,000 attendees celebrated Pride in downtown Orlando in 2023, creating one of the largest single-day Pride celebrations in the region. Organizers hope to provide this year’s anticipated crowd size with enough space to party like they mean it.
In 2019, the nonprofit organization submitted a bid to host WorldPride 2026, one year after the nation’s capital city hosts in 2025. The date would commemorate the 10-year marker of the Pulse massacre of June 2016. Though ultimately Amsterdam was selected over Orlando to be the 2026 host, the dream of one day bringing the global stage of Pride to the City Beautiful is not dashed yet.
Hurricane Milton’s recent rampage along the I-4 corridor incited more anxiety than Michael Myers’ tours of Haddonfield — albeit thankfully with a lower body count — as Orlando’s attractions were forced to hunker down just when the lucrative Halloween season was reaching its peak. Although the scares at Universal’s Halloween Horror Nights were only silenced for a couple of nights before resuming on Friday after the storm, some smaller events had to cancel their media previews or even entire weekends. As October approaches its end, you can wrap up your spooky season on a high note by giving a boost to these three haunted offerings — ranging from mild to wild — which were briefly blown over, but bounced back to boo again.
Gators, Ghosts and Goblins at Gatorland
Last Halloween, I sang the praises of longtime local haunt-master Dan Carro, creative director at Gatorland, whose family-friendly weekend event might be the best-kept secret among Orlando’s October attractions celebrations. Carro and his team didn’t rest on their laurels, because this year’s Gators, Ghosts and Goblins lineup (which is included in regular park admission) is their strongest so far, starting with the spooktacular new “Swamp Ghost’s Haunted Museum.”
More than a mere haunted house, Gatorland’s greatly expanded Halloween walk-through attraction — which is hosted by Carro as “Cyrus the Gravedigger” — is a highly theatrical interactive experience blending atmospheric sets, sophisticated audiovisual effects, and self-deprecating wit with educational info on historical burial practices. While it eschews the grossout gore found in more adult-oriented haunts, Gatorland’s maze packs more heart and humor per square meter within its plywood walls, and is a particular treat for fans of Savannah Boan and the rest of the park’s popular social media team.
The rest of Gatorland’s Halloween event got some appreciated upgrades, including a photo-friendly farm of gigantic gourds guarded by gleefully grotesque costumed characters and an imaginative menagerie of cryptids like the Skunk Ape and the Jersey Devil, brought to life with puppets and animatronics. It’s also worth paying the nominal upcharge to experience the Gatorland Express railroad’s cryptid-hunting overlay, featuring charmingly homespun creatures and hilarious narration. Of course, for gator-phobic guests, a stroll along the boardwalk through the reptile breeding marsh may prove more nerve-wracking than any theme park’s scare zone. (gatorland.com)
Haunting Nights at Leu Gardens
If you’re looking for a Halloween experience that’s a little more mature than Gatorland, but less intense than Universal, Leu Gardens may prove the perfect middle ground. By day, Happy Frights invites families to trick-or-treat with friendly characters; but after sunset, those smiling faces are replaced by sinister fiends, as fog machines and dramatic lighting transform the forest from a fairy-tale glade into a ghoulish gantlet.
Creative City Project has previously produced several similar seasonal outdoor experiences, but this October’s edition is their most polished yet. By emphasizing immersive atmosphere over blood and guts, Haunting Nights earns favorable comparisons to the Villains Grove walk-through that is my favorite element of the Oogie Boogie Bash parties at Disney California Adventure. Some of the hike’s horrific highlights include a carnival crawling with crazed clowns, an arachnophobia-inducing tunnel full of web-crawlers, supersized witches’ cauldrons boiling over with bubbles, a gallery of groaning gargoyles, and a crop of carnivorous plants that look like they could eat Audrey II for lunch.
There aren’t a large number of scare actors in residence, but the denizens that do lurk within Leu are impressively executed, with detailed prosthetic makeup and creative costumes; the wood spirit and spider queen were especially well-realized, and I still get creeped out thinking about
the rodent-headed baby doll one character was clutching. Likewise, even though I found the labyrinth finale confusingly anticlimactic, the limited number of jump scares along the route leading up to it were all exceptionally effective.
Best of all, Happy Frights provides a better bang for your buck than many other boo-fests. Between stops for selfies, carnival snacks and a hip-hop stage show, we spent about 90 minutes exploring the attraction, and probably would have enjoyed staying even longer were it not for the garden’s most gruesome blood-sucking inhabitants — the mosquitoes. (halloweeninthegarden.com)
Ominous Descent at the Winter Haven Moose Lodge
Can any independent haunted house, no matter how good, be worth driving an hour each way into the boondocks between Orlando and Tampa? Haunt connoisseurs who still remember The Shallow Grave know the answer to that question is “Hell yes!” And now that designer Eric Dodson (a veteran of that short-lived legend) has resurrected his spiritual successor, Ominous Descent, as a stand-alone attraction for its first fall since 2019, hard-core horror fans once again have a reason to make the trip to Polk County.
If you’re accustomed to the major theme parks’ haunted houses, brace yourself for a completely different level of intensity at Ominous Descent, which ranges indoors and outdoors through authentically decrepit environments. You can brush up on the intricate backstory (elaborated online with profiles of antagonist Wade Harris and his murderous Breed) all that you want, but knowledge won’t protect you when this aggressively intimidating cast comes calling for your blood.
The harrowing odyssey through Ominous Descent’s gag-inducing abattoirs and mesmerizing green-laser swamp gave me more genuine frights within 15 minutes than I got from a full night at HHN. Throw in an on-site bar, a live cover band and a soul food truck, and you’ve got all the ingredients for a terrifyingly terrific all hallows’ evening. (ominousdescent.com) skubersky@orlandoweekly.com

BY STEVE SCHNEIDER
Premieres Wednesday:
Ancient Apocalypse: The Americas — Keanu Reeves signs on as the co-host to controversial (read: crackpot) theorist Graham Hancock for Season 2, which focuses on extinct civilizations that may or may not have existed in New Mexico, Brazil and Peru. I’m pretty sure whoever falls for this claptrap knows a whole lot about what comes out of Peru. (Netflix)
Are You Smarter Than a Celebrity? — Travis Kelce hosts this spinoff, which substitutes comedians, reality stars and sports figures for fifth-graders as the intellectual paragons to which we all should aspire. And if it’s still too highbrow for the mass audience, the next iteration will bring in a bunch of libertarians. (Prime Video)
Shrinking — Series co-creator Brett Goldstein joins the cast in Season 2, though the role he’s playing is being kept closely under wraps. See, if I could write myself into my own show, I’d probably make myself Gandalf. Just throwing that out there. (Apple TV+)
Sweet Bobby: My Catfish Nightmare — In this shocking documentary, a London woman strikes up an online relationship with a man she believes to be a member of her own Sikh community. But after eight years of no direct contact, she begins to have her doubts. Hey, eight years is a whirlwind courtship for the English. (Netflix)
Premieres Thursday:
Gundam: Requiem for Vengeance — Human combatants in “mobile suits” fight it out on the front lines in a futuristic anime that pits a rebellious European district against a unified Earth government. Given the unwavering commitment we’ve been showing to our allies recently, can you really blame them? (Netflix)
The Lincoln Lawyer — New characters in Season 3 include a judge whose background as a public defender makes her a more liberal-minded presence on the bench. She’ll still put you behind bars for weed, but she’ll make sure your cellmate is society itself. (Netflix)
Outside — A Filipino family tries to avoid a zombie apocalypse, but their patriarch’s mental-health issues may prove to be just as much of a challenge. Because when some undead ghoul is gnawing on your femur, the last thing you’re in the mood for is a good dad joke. (Netflix)
The Pradeeps of Pittsburgh — Naveen Andrews of Lost stars in a sitcom about an Indian family that emigrates to the heart of blue-collar America. Welcome to the flyovers, guys! Hope you like dog! (Prime Video)
you have ESP and you can’t solve a mystery with a two-year head start, that’s where I begin to lose all sympathy. (Prime Video)
Fabulous Lives of Bollywood Wives — Season 3 augments the main cast with new arrivals like New Delhi jewelry designer Riddhima Kapoor. It’s always so illuminating to learn how other cultures say “rank whore.” (Netflix)
Fanatical: The Catfishing of Tegan and Sara — The indie pop duo try to determine the true extent of the damage caused by a hacker who impersonated them online for more than 10 years. Boy, do Trapt wish they had hit on that excuse! (Hulu)
Happiness Is — As she turns 40, a successful South African woman has reason to reflect that her life has gifted her with everything but a man to share her blessings with. In other words, everything! (Netflix)
MadS — Shot in either one take or five (depending on whom you believe), this twisty shocker charts the panic of a French kid as he tries to figure out whether a strange woman just killed herself in his car, or if it was all merely a drug-induced hallucination. (This is what J.D. Vance wonders every time he finds eyeliner in his glove compartment.) (Shudder)
The Man Who Loved UFOs — Here’s a biopic of Argentinian “journalist” José de Zer, who in 1986 managed to convince his nation that some burnt pastures were evidence of alien activity. ScreenDaily says the film is cute but “lacks bite,” so you know what that means: They’re in on it! (Netflix)
I Am a Killer — Season 5 introduces us to a fresh batch of convicted murderers with an intriguing set of alibis and self-justifications. I’m just waiting for the day when “I needed to prioritize my mental health” becomes a legitimate defense for homicide. Get on it, Chappell! (Netflix)
Justice — A disgraced Polish cop is promised reinstatement to the force if he brings in a cadre of bank robbers. And if he gets them to confess, the bonus is a set of pierogi knives. (Netflix)
Nemesis — Intrepid financial investigators root out tax crimes at the upper levels of Dutch society, barely realizing how firmly entrenched the corruption really is. The first red flag was when Goldmember got heavy into Dogecoin. (Hulu)

Premieres Friday:
Culte — A cast of actors dramatizes the making of Loft Story, the French Big Brother adaptation that became a national disgrace due to its overall crassness. See, this was before the world decided mortifying reality stars shouldn’t be shunned, and should get the nuclear codes instead. (Prime Video)

The Office Australia — Felicity Ward of the failed Time Bandits reboot headlines the 13th regional edition of the Gervais/Carell juggernaut, playing a branch manager who defies a work-from-home order to keep her office family together. Deadline calls Ward the show’s “first-ever female lead,” which I think means we’re about to learn something shocking about Catherine Tate. (Prime Video)
Woman of the Hour — Anna Kendrick directed herself in this story of a struggling actress who was paired up with a serial killer on an episode of The Dating Game. Makes you wonder what was so wrong with Bachelors One and Two — male vocal fry? (Netflix)
Premieres Tuesday:
Hasan Minhaj: Off With His Head — In his third stand-up special, Minhaj clears up some of the creative exaggerations he made in his last one, including his claim that exposure to mailed anthrax sent his daughter to the hospital. Actually, it was just a free sample of Gold Bond that Amazon sent to the wrong house, but what parent doesn’t recognize the emotional truth behind that kind of close shave? (Netflix)
FEELS JUST LIKE STARTING OVER
Rainbow Kitten Surprise finds second chances on an Orlando stage
BY KYLE NARDINE
As you approach Universal Studios from I-4, you’ll see Volcano Bay’s Ko’okiri Body Plunge. The drop-slide is impossible to miss, and serves as a marker of sorts while sitting in traffic.
Ela Melo, lead singer of Rainbow Kitten Surprise, will see Ko’okiri Body Plunge too when her band comes to the Hard Rock Live Tuesday. But she has her eyes set on something more thrilling right now: a do-over.
“It feels like a second chance that we are getting,” says Melo on getting to perform in Orlando. “I’m very grateful to be able to come back and perform there and I’m just excited.”
Orlando is a part of Rainbow Kitten Surprise’s story as a band and the place where a difficult
but necessary decision was made to postpone their 2023 tour for medical reasons.
“We had to cancel our last Orlando show right when we were down there because I was not in the capacity to perform,” explains Melo. “That is my main memory of Orlando right now, making that decision with our band and management on the bus to bring down the tour.”
There will be new memories made soon enough. The band has new music: a new record, Love Hate Music Box released back in May. The genre-defying band’s fourth album and the first in six years was a mash-up of previous projects of Melo’s. “It started off as this dream-state of projects that I had shoved away and had them in a box and brought out,” Melo says.
RAINBOW KITTEN SURPRISE with The Brook and the Bluff 7 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 22 Hard Rock Live 6050 Universal Blvd. hardrock.com/live $59.50-$85
“I wrote ‘Superstar’ at my parents’ house, singing into a microphone that was partially in the closet,” says Melo.
“I lifted the microphone to the point where I had to stand on a chair to sing into it because I thought that was going to get the best acoustics. The last thing I felt like was a superstar, but that is the irony of it.
“I feel that everyone feels like they have to make people laugh or they gotta make people happy,” Melo continues. “Everyone wants to be a superstar for someone in their lives, not for the glory, but you want to be a positive creative force for the people in your lives. I feel that pressure all the time, but I don’t let it get to me.”
Melo also had an assist from a “superstar” on this record as well. “Overtime” has a feature from rising country music star Kacey Musgraves. Musgraves and RKS share a producer in Daniel Tashian. Melo was pleased with how the song came out.
The journey to making the record was a long and difficult one. Melo has been open about her transition, receiving a diagnosis for bipolar disorder and overcoming writer’s block. With the help of producer Daniel Tashian (Kacey Musgraves), Melo learned how to use her quiet voice to sing about powerful topics.
“Getting to making the record was the strangest thing,” Melo says. “I had writer’s block for the longest time. It was years of making aimless projects and manic. It was a dialogue I was having with my computers about music. It was unveiling some things I was insecure about, and it came alive in the studio. Our producer, Daniel Tashian, called it ‘finding the quiet voice,’ which is whatever the thing that is persistent yet soft. That’s the vulnerable stuff we want to dig into, and the hardest stuff to open up about.”
Melo is opening up to audiences on this tour with these new songs, and it’s an experience the western North Carolina native finds to be a cleansing.
“It’s cathartic,” says Melo about singing songs from Love Hate Music Box.“I believe that as songwriters we build up skeletons in our closet that at some point have to be cleared if we want to grow and move forward with our craft. You can’t just skip along to the good stuff.”
One of those songs seeing the light of day live is “Superstar.”
“We shared a studio at the time,” says Melo of Musgraves. “She was like, ‘Let’s do something sometime,’ and I was like, ‘Here’s this song on the record.’ I didn’t know if she wanted to do a whole second verse by herself or if she wanted to do harmonies. Taking the second verse is a big thing in country music. I just remembered when she laid down that verse and sent me a voice memo. We were in Paris, and I listened to it and fell in love with it. I was like, wow, she really nailed this. I go outside and my whole band is like, ‘We heard you have the goods!’ I was really happy that it all transpired.”
Even though Melo is looking forward to coming to the Sunshine State, she still has her eyes on the Tarheel State. Our conversation took place as Hurricane Milton was exiting Florida. Days previously, Hurricane Helene had devastated the RKS home base of North Carolina. The band from Boone, N.C., will be donating ticket profits from their North Carolina shows to Helene relief funds.
“I’ve been trying to stay out of the news about it,” says Melo about Hurricane Helene. “It’s hard to watch, and I’ve seen some videos. We got friends and family on the mountain, and some of them are now getting water and power back on. … I have a lot of memories of Boone and it is a place I hold in my heart. It hurts to see what is happening now. All I can picture now is the images I’ve seen of the flooding. All I can think of is the place that I know and love still there? [But] I do have confidence in people’s capacity to rebuild and get back on their feet.”

LOCAL RELEASES
When they first emerged in the late 2010s, Orlando punk band Curtains had already come packing decades of street cred as a stacked unit of veterans from classic Orlando bands going back to the 1990s. Though that original roster has been almost completely revamped, the current lineup upholds Curtains’ decorated warhorse tradition with the loaded résumés of guitarist John Grimaldi (Commonplace, Grave Return), drummer Patrick O’Neal (My Hotel Year, History, Sick Dogs) and bassist Eric Bass (Lost Time Accident, Loose Touch).
The sole constant in the group has been bandleader Mike Levin (The New Lows, Shyster, Sunday Morning Revival). More than the changes in their ranks, it’s the changes in Levin that’ve shaped Curtains’ sound on brand-new record The Far Shore, their first full-length album.
With songs that pair speed with soul, Curtains have always been on the more tuneful side of hardcore. But on The Far Shore, they’ve taken an even more melodic turn, sometimes veering away from punk altogether.
“Early Curtains angst was about dealing with my mom’s death,” says Levin.“Getting married a few years later and gaining a stepson, and then the birth of my daughter, have made my music more melodic, my life being in greater harmony. I’m happier.”
One thing his work across nearly all his bands has demonstrated, however, is that melody is instinctive to Levin. With its new outlook and sound, this album allows space not seen before in Curtains for this natural side of Levin’s songwriting to fully bloom. Punk’s not dead here, it’s just making welcome room for some rock reflection.
The Far Shore now streams everywhere. It’s also available on vinyl through Ashtray

CONCERT PICKS THIS WEEK
They Hate Change, Palomino Blond: This show pairs two of Florida’s hottest indie breakouts right now. After solidifying themselves as a regional buzz band with their thick melodic fuzz, Miami’s Palomino Blond have just officially broken nationally with the release of excellent new album You Feel It Too on Brooklyn tastemaker label Kanine Records. As for genre-bending, game-changing Tampa rap duo They Hate Change, they too have been on a recent high-profile tear with two critically lauded releases on leading indie label Jagjaguwar. It’s the best, most
diverse delegation of Florida music on the rise today. Opening will be Orlando bands Audible Parts and Dayspells. (8 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 17, Will’s Pub, $15-$20)
Halo Halo Music Fest: Despite constituting the third largest Asian group in America, the Philippine diaspora has long been underrepresented in American culture. But thankfully, that’s changing here in Orlando. The nascent Halo Halo Music Fest is the latest event to get loud and proud in spotlighting area Filipinx talent. With all due respect to tradition, HHMF is distinctive for its focus on rising artistic voices. The lineup of over 30 acts is an impressive span encompassing pop, rock, hip-hop, indie, math-rock, metal, punk, prog, goth and more. Both ethnic and youthful, HHMF is an upward gathering that’s not simply about honoring where you came from but where you’re going. (3 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 19, Will’s Pub/Dirty Laundry/Lil Indie’s/Uncle Lou’s, $15-$25)
Wine Lips: Garage, punk and psych are all words that’ve been used to tag Toronto upstarts Wine Lips. While those descriptors capture parts of their sound, none of them quite encapsulate their soul. All I know is that no punk or psych rock has ever made me wanna strip naked on the spot and hump a leg the way Wine Lips’ songs do. At their core, they’re a capital-R rock band — plain, simple and beautiful. In big-ass riffs and a pounding attack, they merge swaggering 1970s bombast with the velocity of punk. Most crucially, they’re carnal in a way that only true rock & roll can be. Opening will be North Florida’s Killer Larry and Orlando’s Lemon Denim. Theresa Caputo
Theresa Caputo, the Long Island Medium, is coming to Orlando to give Central Florida fans the chance to experience her talents up close. The Lifetime Raising Spirits star and best-selling author will (theoretically) give attendees a chance to communicate with loved ones who have passed on. There will be a full-stage video setup to make attendees feel like they’re in the center of the action. Caputo has been a practicing medium for over 20 years and now tours the country. To Caputo, it isn’t “about believing in mediums. It’s about seeing something life-changing. It’s witnessing first-hand spirit communication.” The Plaza Live, 425 N. Día de los Muertos & Monster Party
CityArts in downtown Orlando celebrates spooky season with an aesthetic twist this week, hosting their annual Día de los Muertos & Monster Party. There’s a whole lot of wonderment to experience here on a weeknight, so venture down Pine Street — if you dare — for a seasonal smash that features a Day of the Dead and Halloween-inspired group art show turning several galleries in CityArts into chilling and fantastical multimedia phantasmagorias. Once you catch your breath, head outside to the patio area for a terrifying soiree featuring live music, food, spirits (heh heh), costumes and creepy wares from vendors. This is the 15th year for this tradition, and that’s saying something. (Saying “boo!” more than likely.) 6 p.m., CityArts, 39 S. Magnolia Ave., facebook.com/cityartsorlando, $5-$50. — Matthew Moyer

Freak Show Horror Film Festival
’Tis the season to unleash your freak — or just check out three days packed with top-tier twisted independent horror films. Freak Show Horror Film Festival returns for a 19th year of blood-curdling screams to showcase new visions in horror cinema. This year’s lineup boasts more than 30 filmmakers, 20 diverse — and terrifying — feature films and dozens upon dozens of jittery jump scares. Each spine-chilling film is paired with several short films, and audiences can choose to either experience one bout of celluloid horror, or purchase a pass to fully immerse themselves in the Freak Show. Awards will get dished out over the weekend as well. Select cast and crew are on hand for post-film meet-andgreets and discussions. Bob Mould
Hüsker Dü leading light, out-and-proud gay man, former writer for wrestling fed WCW, alt-rocker emeritus in the harrowing Sugar, and guitar demon Bob Mould comes to Orlando solo this week. But he ain’t playing unplugged, you nerds. He’s going full electric. See, Mould is out on the road by his lonesome doing deep dives through his own memorable catalog, and giving some new, in-progress works live airings — “memorable pop songs” is the vibe, sayeth Mould. But there are plenty of familiar anthems and gems getting the solo treatment on this run of dates. Previous shows have seen him tackle Hüsker’s “Something I Learned Today” and “Too Far Down,” and Sugar’s undeniable “If I Can’t Change Your Mind,” among other serrated weepers and crowd-pleasers. Fingers crossed for “Black Sheets of Rain.” 7 p.m., The Social, 54 N. Orange Ave., foundation-presents.com, $25. — Matthew Moyer

Gamble Rogers Cinema Fest
Head to the Winter Park Library’s Events Center for a double-film screening honoring the life and legacy of Gamble Rogers, a famous folk artist, musician and storyteller from Winter Park — lauded by the likes of Jimmy Buffet as an influence. The films featured are documentary Gamble Rogers: Down at the Terminal Tavern, narrated by Grammy-winner David Holt, and concert film Gamble Rogers: Homegrown Philosophy (Part Two). Rogers has become a cult hero for his literate, folky spin on country music. The dense stories in his songs recount the travails of hardluck characters in Oklawaha County, a fictional region in Florida and, earlier, Winter Park, where he was born and attended Rollins College for a year. Rogers was posthumously awarded the Kiwanis Award for bravery and the Carnegie Award for heroism, as he died too young in 1991 attempting to save a man drowning in the rough surf of Flagler Beach. As part of the event, Sunday features an afternoon of music and stories from Rogers’ confederates Sam Pacetti and Del Suggs (he of the incredible 1983 Salt Water Music album recorded in Tallahassee). Delve deep into the life and legacy of a Floridian hero once referred to as “Mark Twain with a guitar.” Winter Park Library and Events Center, 1052 W. Shaq’s Bass All-Stars Orlando Block Party
Did someone say Shaq is back? And he won’t be shooting free throws this time? Orlando Magic icon-turned-DJ Diesel Shaquille O’Neal is returning to his old stomping grounds in the City Beautiful to spin some sick music this weekend at Shaq’s Bass All-Stars Block Party. Wall Street Plaza gets the all-star treatment from Shaq and
his party cohorts Space Laces, DJ Hairitage, dubstep producer Rated R, DJ Celo, Butler, and remix connoisseur Machaki, all turning tracks alongside the former Magic center and Big Chicken boss. If anyone can pull off the impossible and save downtown’s party cred, it’s Shaq. 6 p.m., Wall Street Plaza, 25 Wall St., wallstreetorlando.com, $60-$70. — Lucy Dillon

Foreign Dissent 9
In just a few short days, punk bands from across the world descend on the City Beautiful for Foreign Dissent, Orlando’s yearly International Punk Rock Party. A labor of love organized by local promoter Craig Mazer, this year features bands from Italy, Chile, Panama and England. The bands come to Orlando en route to Fest, Gainesville’s annual punk pilgrimage featuring hundreds of bands from all corners, near and far. Bands like the Loyal Cheaters, one of many bands from Italy taking the Will’s Pub stage, who are on their first U.S. tour. Lena McFrison from the band describes their music as “turbo rock ’n’ roll. We are heavily influenced by punk as well — we like it raw!” Costs and customs add up, and without knowing local promoters, it’s difficult to book shows. Foreign Dissent offers locals an international showcase, and the chance for bands to build a global fanbase. 7 p.m., Will’s Pub, 1042 N. Mills Ave., willspub.org, $20. — Ida V. Eskamani

Adventurous rockers Foxing take the Abbey stage to perform a haunting wealth of tracks from their decade-and-a-half presence in the emo and indie-rock scenes.
