Abortion rights activists in Orlando raise money for three more clinics fined by the state
Abortion rights activists in Orlando are raising funds for three clinics in South Florida that have been fined by the state over violations of the state’s 24-hour waiting period law. This comes after activists successfully raised nearly $200,000 for an abortion clinic in Orlando that faced a similar fine in August. The waiting period law was first passed in 2015, but blocked by the courts for seven years. Like similar policies in at least a dozen other states, it requires a pregnant person to have two visits with a physician at least 24 hours apart before they can get an abortion. Employees of at least two abortion clinics have publicly said they weren’t notified by the state of the law’s effective date, and produced unanswered queries they sent to the state as to the effective date. The law went into effect April 25, 2022, after a Leon County Circuit Judge entered a final judgment earlier that month upholding it. “Just like with [the Center of Orlando for Women], we need YOUR help to assist these clinics in their struggle against politically motivated, non-medical laws that only exist to target and regulate abortion providers out of existence,” the volunteer abortion clinic escort group SWAN wrote on their fundraiser page, hosted by GiveButter. “They ALL need your help to stay open and continue to serve Floridians and the abortion refugees across the South and beyond that seek care in our state.”

DeSantis administration denies defying judge in Florida gender-affirming care case
Brightline has introduced the All-Station Shared Pass, intended for frequent travelers between Orlando and South Florida. The new pass eliminates peak fares every day of the week for passholders. “The pass can be shared to book rides for friends, family, and colleagues, putting guests in control to embark on adventures, business meetings, and cherished family getaways with ease,” said Brightline in a statement. Rates for the All-Station Shared Pass start at $1,199 and are available to purchase now. The pass includes a total of 12 rides valid for 90 days across any Florida Brightline stations, connecting Orlando, West Palm Beach, Boca Raton, Fort Lauderdale, Aventura and Miami. The pass can be shared between friends or family and offers no unexpected fees or blackout dates, Brightline says. Brightline recently announced it would double the amount of trains traveling between Orlando and South Florida every day, from 15 daily trips to 30.
defiance of the judgment.” But in a 10-page response, lawyers for the state Agency for Health Care Administration argued the state is not enforcing the rule as a “categorical ban” on coverage for the treatments, saying that Medicaid patients could seek variances or waivers of the rule through an administrative process. Attorneys for the plaintiffs called such arguments a “red herring” and said, for example, that the AHCA has told Medicaid managed-care organizations to deny coverage for such treatments. Most Medicaid beneficiaries are enrolled in managed-care plans. The lawsuit was filed last year on behalf of two trans adults and the parents of two trans minors after the AHCA adopted the rule. The lawsuit was updated this spring to also include a new state law aimed at preventing Medicaid coverage for the treatments.

Florida Republican behind state’s ‘Don’t Say Gay’ bill sentenced for fraud
Former Republican state lawmaker Joe Harding of Ocala, the sponsor of Florida’s controversial law limiting discussions of gender and sexuality in public schools, was sentenced to four months in prison (out of a possible 70 years) on charges of defrauding the government of $150,000 in pandemic aid. Harding’s family and friends wept throughout the proceedings. Harding resigned from office in December shortly after being indicted on two counts each of wire fraud, money laundering and making false statements. Had he been convicted on all counts, Harding could have faced up to 70 years in prison. Harding has since repaid the $150,000. When he is released from prison, Harding will be required to serve two years of supervised release and pay a $300 fine. He was ordered to turn himself in by noon, Jan. 29. Harding initially pleaded not guilty to all charges, but as part of a plea deal with prosecutors, he ultimately pleaded guilty to one count of each charge, cutting the maximum prison sentence to 35 years.
Florida Division of Emergency Management Director Kevin Guthrie said the state spent an estimated $4 million to help transport about 270 Americans out of Israel, in an interview with NewsNation. The state of Florida paid for the aircraft used by the veterans-led nonprofit Project Dynamo to evacuate Americans from a war that began when Hamas militants attacked Israeli civilians. As of Oct. 23, more than 1,400 people had been killed in Israel since the war began, and nearly 5,100 Palestinians had been killed in the Gaza Strip since Israel launched a relentless bombing campaign in response to Hamas’ attack. About 40 percent of those killed so far in Gaza were children, according to Gaza’s Ministry of Health. Florida’s evacuation efforts in Israel came as U.S. State Department-organized charter flights have been taking Americans from Israel to Greece. An executive order issued by DeSantis last week directed the Division of Emergency Management to draw money from the state’s Emergency Preparedness and Response Fund for rescue operations and to move supplies into Israel. The fund received $500 million in this year’s state budget. No rescue attempts have been attempted by the DeSantis administration for Americans in Gaza.
Gov. Ron DeSantis’ administration disputed allegations that it has defied a federal judge’s decision in a battle over state attempts to block Medicaid coverage for trans people seeking hormone therapy and puberty blockers. Plaintiffs’ attorneys on Oct. 4 asked U.S. District Judge Robert Hinkle to enforce a June decision that invalidated a state law and a rule “to the extent they categorically ban Medicaid payment for puberty blockers and cross-sex hormones for the treatment of gender dysphoria.” The attorneys contended the state has continued to enforce the rule in “complete orlandoweekly.com ● OCT. 25-31, 2023 ● ORLANDO WEEKLY

Auto workers are still walking the picket line outside the Stellantis auto parts center in Orlando, a full month after going out on strike Strikers outside Orlando’s Stellantis parts center | Photo by Dave Decker

G
ary Lopez, less than a year shy of retirement age, has worked for Chrysler (now Stellantis) for over 20 years. On strike is the last place he and many of his co-workers at the old Chrysler auto parts center in Orlando want to be, collecting $500 per week from their union in strike pay and waiting for their employer to negotiate a new labor contract with their union that satisfies the demands of its members. That union, the United Auto Workers, is fighting for a new four-year contract that meaningfully attempts to make good on promises that Chrysler, General Motors and Ford made to their union employees over a decade ago. That’s when those employees took concessions like wage freezes and the end of cost-of-living adjustments — concessions that helped ensure their employers’ survival. “We’re not out here just for our cause,” Lopez told Orlando Weekly early Friday afternoon, sitting outside the parts depot he’s worked at for 20 years, after transferring from a Chrysler plant in Indiana that was sold to a Japanese automaker in 2003. Lopez emphasized that this strike is bigger than just himself or his co-workers. Organized labor pushed for rights that many of us take for granted today: a minimum wage, a 40-hour work week, and the right for most workers to organize for better pay and working conditions. Gains made by unions set standards for non-union workplaces industry-wide, placing pressure on other companies to offer incentives, lest they lose their competitive edge in recruiting and retaining workers. That’s why, for Lopez, “We’re out here for the cause of everybody.” Chrysler workers in Orlando have been on strike for a full month, after they and about 5,600 other members of the United Auto Workers in Stellantis and General Motors auto parts centers walked off the job Sept. 22, joining over 13,000 others already on strike at assembly plants in Michigan, Ohio and Missouri. It’s the first strike against all of the Big Three automakers simultaneously in the union’s history. Instead of all 146,000 UAW members of the Big Three striking at once, the union’s taken a staggered approach, calling on workers to join the strike at little more than a moment’s notice in order to keep the companies guessing.
The auto workers’ strike, in a return to the UAW’s militant roots, is a broad call to end corporate greed both in the auto industry — where the Big Three alone have amassed nearly a quarter-trillion dollars combined over the past decade — and beyond, as CEO pay in recent decades has soared off the backs of the working people who make their companies profitable. Stellantis, the most profitable of the Big Three auto companies, reported $12 billion in net profits in the first six months of 2023 alone, up 37 percent year over year. The company executed another $500 million in stock buybacks just days ahead of the strike, yet pleads poverty when called upon to meet the union’s demands for double-digit percentage raises (to make up for concessions made to save Chrysler during the 2008 financial crisis). The average hourly wage of U.S. auto manufacturing workers has declined 30% since 2003, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Workers at the Stellantis depot centers start at around $16 an hour, and top out at $32 an hour. During negotiations, Stellantis has offered a 23% increase to base pay over four and a half years for workers. The union says that’s not good enough — they’re fighting for 36%, to nearly match the average raises given to the Big Three’s CEOs. According to the UAW, Stellantis has also dragged its feet on agreeing to other demands regarding job security, COLA, retiree pay and a just transition to electric vehicle manufacturing. So far Stellantis, based in the Netherlands, has agreed to eliminate a divisive wage tier between longtime “legacy” workers and newer hires. They’ve agreed to establish a minimum $20 per hour pay for temporary workers (who can work for years before getting a chance to apply for a permanent position), to create 1,000 permanent positions for current temps, and to give workers the right to strike over plant closures — an economically devastating outcome for small towns like New Castle, Indiana, that more than a handful of workers in Orlando understand intimately after living through it themselves. “We’re just asking for a fair agreement,”Lopez told Orlando Weekly that first day he and his co-workers walked out of the parts depot. They haven’t been back inside since. Workers at Orlando’s Stellantis center, off Boggy Creek road near the Orlando
International Airport, last went on strike in 2007. But that work stoppage, under different union leadership, lasted just six hours — not even long enough for workers on the second shift to join in, several longtime employees told Orlando Weekly. Most of the Big Three automakers’ assembly plants are concentrated in the U.S. Midwest, but their parts distribution centers — where workers store, organize and prepare parts for dealerships — are scattered all over the country. Stellantis workers in Orlando are the only Big Three workers on strike for hundreds of miles, although UAW-represented workers of Mack Trucks, the parent company of Volvo, have also walked off the job and have been on strike since Oct. 9 in a separate labor action up in Jacksonville, Florida, and in two other states after rejecting a tentative deal that workers felt was insufficient. “I’m inspired to see UAW members at Mack Trucks holding out for a better deal, and ready to stand up and walk off the job to win it,” said UAW President Shawn Fain in a statement.“The members have the final say, and it’s their solidarity and organization that will win a fair contract at Mack.” Stellantis, the most profitable of the Big Three auto companies, has resorted to playing dirty, despite coming to the bargaining table with some concessions over the last month. As The Intercept first reported, the company recently began recruiting volunteer replacement workers from its Business Resource Groups to staff parts distribution centers. General Motors has also reportedly brought in scabs (a term which can refer to nonunion workers or to union members who cross the picket line to perform labor usually done by the workers on strike). Lopez, from the Orlando parts center, said Stellantis recently brought in salaried managers to work in their facility, beginning last week. One manager was allegedly told to operate equipment she wasn’t trained to use, and quit her job at the center during the first week, before other regional managers were called in. She drove out of the parking lot “like a bat out of hell,” according to one worker Orlando Weekly spoke to. Inside the parts depot, workers are trained to use equipment like forklifts and stackers, a type
of fork truck that workers use to pick up things like engines and transmissions, often with six or eight engines placed on a pallet. “[It’s] a dangerous job,” said Chuck Cowell, another worker on the picket line Friday who trains people how to use the equipment. “They’re [Stellantis] violating their own health and safety policy because none of them [the managers] are licensed to actually be on equipment,” Cowell added. Last week, labor advocacy website More Perfect Union reported that Stellantis has also deployed security guards from notorious strikebreaking firm Huffmaster to multiple parts distribution centers — a service that doesn’t come cheap. A 2021 tax filing from Mercy Hospital in Buffalo, New York, shows the nonprofit hospital paid Huffmaster over $62 million for “healthcare staffing services.” That fiasco was messy enough to get the attention of New York State’s Attorney General, who wrote a “cease and desist” letter to the hospital, noting that Huffmaster was performing unlicensed activity. Cowell told Orlando Weekly that he and his co-workers appreciate the members of the public — and members of other unions in Florida — who’ve come out to stand with them, drop off cases of water and food, and to show them others in the state have their backs. That goes too for members of other unions who’ve shown up to the line, from nurses, to teachers, Disney World workers, UPS workers, and most recently a small group of flight attendants. Fewer people have come out the longer the strike has gone on, however. Lopez recalled some guy driving a Tesla stopping by, dropping off a box of donuts. A handful of politicians, community organizations like the Central Florida Jobs with Justice and the Democratic Socialists of America, and other socialist organizations have also shown up to the line in solidarity. As an Orlando Weekly reporter left the scene Friday, an Amazon semi driving by the picket line honked in a show of support. “The bottom line is, we’ve got cards left to play, and they’ve got money left to spend,” UAW president Shawn Fain said of the Big Three last Friday. “They want fear. They want uncertainty. And what we have is our solidarity.” On Monday, another 6,800 UAW workers went on strike. mschueler@orlandoweekly.com

FLORIDA MEN
A Black man and his colleagues were inspecting property he owns in Rosewood, site of the infamous 1923 massacre. His white neighbor across the way shouted racial slurs at them, then attempted to run them down in his three-ton truck. BY JACK LEMNU S , FRESH TAKE F LO RIDA
H
istorian Marvin Dunn was surveying land he co-owns in a Florida town called Rosewood — once a haven for Black Americans — as part of plans to memorialize the horrific racial violence there a century ago when an enraged, white mob murdered Black residents and set homes and churches ablaze. Dunn, 83, of Miami, a professor emeritus at Florida International University, is among the first Black property owners in Rosewood since the infamous massacre, one he says is too often forgotten. In September 2022, Dunn and five others were on the 5.7-acre, heavily wooded plot to identify historic sites for a centennial memorial: a former church, a graveyard, the Black Masonic lodge and the remains of rail tracks that once carried survivors who fled the ravaged town and never returned. One hundred years later, those same hallowed grounds witnessed another racial reckoning.
The incident
David Allen Emanuel Sr., 62, a clam farmer who lives with his family across the street from the site in Levy County in north-central Florida, shouted racial slurs at Dunn and his group — calling him a “f----ing n----r” — and demanded that they leave the area. He sped away from the group in a white Ford F-250 dually diesel
pickup, cut a U-turn through a ditch and, after briefly stopping in his driveway, accelerated toward the men. Gravel flew. Dunn’s son, Frederick Douglas Dunn, 53, jumped out of the way as the three-ton truck missed him by inches. “It wasn’t like I pulled a gun on him,” Emanuel said in a phone interview this week, still professing his innocence. “My man got his feelings hurt.” Unlike the white perpetrators who all went unpunished for the 1923 Rosewood massacre, this summer, a federal jury in a two-day trial convicted Emanuel of hate crimes over the September 2022 incident. It ruled that Emanuel, who is white, had violated the civil rights of the Dunns and the others by intimidating or attempting to injure them based on their race. “It’ll be nice to have a little weight off our shoulders once it’s all over,” said Frederick Douglas Dunn, who narrowly missed being struck by the speeding truck. Prosecutors said the victims — who they described as fathers, veterans, historians, a preacher, a firefighter, a scientist, a devoted son and a grandson — testified about the violent confrontation, describing racial slurs from Emanuel that were “so degrading and dehumanizing that the victims could barely utter them,” Assistant U.S. Attorney Kaitlin Weiss wrote in a court motion.
The group recorded the license number and even photographed Emanuel’s pickup as he sped away.“We just had a man try to run a guy over out here on the side of the road,” a witness told a 911 dispatcher, according to court records.“He come inches from him.” He added: “It is absolute harassment of these gentlemen.” The terrible irony of the incident wasn’t lost in the 911 call. The witness, identified only as “R.P.” in court records, was a contractor Dunn had hired to help clear brush at the site of the massacre 100 years ago. Their plans were to build a memorial, an educational facility to teach future generations about the horrors from Rosewood’s history fueled by racially charged rage, he said. “Because of this stuff, like this right here,” R.P. told the dispatcher.“We’re not in a day and time where that stuff’s acceptable at all.” Levy County sheriff’s deputies questioned Emanuel at his home, where a deputy noted Confederate flags and bumper stickers on display. He greeted a sheriff’s corporal by asking,“This all over the Black people deal?” In the sheriff’s office interview, Emanuel denied using the N-word but acknowledged there had been a confrontation: “I might have said, ‘Hey, you Black son of a b----, I’ll see you in hell,’” he said. “I might have said that, but I don’t even know that he heard it. This was out the window of my truck.” Emanuel said Dunn and his group of researchers had a history of damaging his property, and that the confrontation followed a profane exchange between the men and Emanuel’s adult daughter who told them to move their vehicles parked on a 19-foot-wide public easement along their family’s property. Prosecutors said they were lawfully parked. Emanuel also disputed that he hurt anyone: “I didn’t stop and run them over, and I didn’t beat the crap out of them.” He was upset, he said, about large groups of Black visitors touring the massacre site across from his home: “They come here every four or five years,” he said. “I’ve been here 24 years, and I’ve dealt with these Black people. Busloads of them coming down here and line up.” Days later, in the patrol cruiser on his way to jail, Emanuel was in disbelief, saying, “I didn’t do a g--d--- thing,” and said he was “treated like this s--- over a f---ing n-----, man. I didn’t do a g--d--thing to them. I should have run over them motherf------.”
The sentencing
Emanuel appeared solemn and reserved last week as Judge Allen Winsor delivered his sentence on six counts of hate crimes for attempting to run over Marvin Dunn, his son and four other Black men. Winsor sentenced Emanuel to 12 months plus one day in federal prison for each of the six charges and allowed the sentences to run concurrently. The Justice Department had sought a “substantial” prison term of between five and six years. Emanuel must surrender to report to prison no later than noon on Jan. 2, the judge said. He was also ordered to serve two years of supervised release after he finished his prison term. At the hearing last Thursday, family and supporters of Emanuel filled the defense side of the courtroom. Muffled sobs emanated from some as the judge read the sentence. “I do see he’s provided a lot of value to the community,” Winsor said. “I don’t think he’s going to do something like this again ... but there’s a need for general deterrence, and it’s clear he did it because of race.” Dunn, 83, and his son sat somber on the opposite side, flanked by a handful of others. In an interview, the elder Dunn said the attack was the worst racial upheaval he’s experienced since the Civil Rights era, but he and his son drove from their homes in Miami with a message of forgiveness. Dunn submitted a letter to the judge on behalf of the other victims requesting mercy be shown to Emanuel, not solely for him and his family, but to move on as a country. “For me, my faith requires forgiveness, and so I must,” the letter read.“[Race] is the thorn in our collective side, the unmovable rock in our common path. For America to become whole, the thorns and rocks must be removed. The victims in this case are hopeful that in our plea for mercy for Mr. Emanuel and his family, we are taking an important step toward the goal of removing these obstacles to healing.” When Dunn testified at trial, he was on the precipice of tears recounting how close Emanuel came to striking his son with his truck. But Dunn, a grandfather like Emanuel, stressed the impact a prison sentence would have on Emanuel’s family. “I know how valuable those grandpa years are,” Dunn said after reading his letter to the judge. “I assure the court we can live in peace as neighbors. Someone must take the first step toward peace.” While Winsor said he gave the letter much consideration, he felt probation would be an insufficient sentence as it doesn’t serve to deter others from committing similar crimes. In addition to Dunn’s letter, more than 30 letters of support were submitted by Emanuel’s friends and family requesting a light sentence. There were also four advocates of Emanuel who addressed the court prior to sentencing. Cedar Key Police Chief Edward Jenkins, a Black man, told the court that he’d never had any negative experiences with Emanuel during their many encounters. The tension in the courtroom was palpable as the sentencing took over an hour to complete. D e f e n s e a t t o r n e y D a r r e n Ja m e s Johnson argued that Emanuel has numerous health issues and that instead of prison he should be ordered to complete “some form of racial sensitivity training,” as punishment. He justified a light sentence by arguing that race had little to do with the incident, and that Emanuel’s attack was an isolated event. “Race only became a factor after it began,” said Johnson. Winsor, appointed by former president Donald Trump in 2019, was insistent throughout
the hearing that race was the proven motive for the attack. “[Emanuel] didn’t think those people were about to commit a home invasion,”he said.“They had every right to be out there that day. He did it because of race.”
The aftermath
Outside court, Emanuel and roughly two dozen of his supporters congregated around his truck — a white Ford F-250 adorned with a Confederate flag, the exact likeness of the vehicle used in the attack. Most of the federal jury that convicted Emanuel was white, as is Judge Winsor. Marvin Dunn and his son said the case gave them renewed confidence in the judicial system. “What happened in that federal courtroom was reassuring that America still works,” Marvin Dunn said. Marvin Dunn isn’t discouraged from teaching painful history. This includes projects like converting the Rosewood property into a state park and his “Teach the Truth” tours, where he ferries students around Florida’s sites of racial violence. Last month, he took Stetson University students to the grounds of the massacre in Ocoee, Florida, where about 300 Black bodies are presumed buried in a mass grave. They visited Live Oak, where 15-year-old Willy James Howard was lynched in 1944 for giving a Christmas card to a white girl. They traveled to the site of mass lynchings in Newberry and visited Rosewood. “People are struck when they walk the grounds where these things happen,” he said. “It’s transformative to a lot of people, and not just for Black people.” After Emanuel serves his federal sentence, he said in an interview prior to sentencing, he plans to sell his house and move to another part of town close to his son’s grave. “I’m not living across from a Rosewood memorial,” Emanuel said in the phone interview, “that thousands of Black people are going to come to.” Dunn later said he was disheartened to hear it. “I’d rather work with him as neighbors,” Dunn said. emolition is easy and fun, while building up is always so difficult. But we all would prefer to live in a building rather than a shambles, right? In our current society, seek people who are building, rather than tearing down — that’s where the power is. Monica Jane Frisell and Adam Scher are doing just that by traveling the country and assembling a series called Portraits of US. While Artists-in-Residence at the Art and History Museums of Maitland last year and in early 2023, the couple created portraits of people in Central Florida, and these are now on display in the gallery. Frisell and Scher began roaming in 2021, late in the pandemic, and haven’t stopped since. They have moved between artist-in-residency programs and spent time getting to know people before they start
photographing them. Scher and Frisell befriend their subjects, make videos of their stories, and cap it off with a still portrait. The videos are either two-minute snippets or longer pieces, like the untitled video in the Maitland Art Center gallery, stitching together about 70 slices of life from Vermont, Washington state and, yes, Central Florida. You’ll get a gasp of recognition here and there as familiar places snap into focus. The photographs in (Un)Common Bond range from 8 by 10 inches to enlargements at least double that size. A grid of photos in the first gallery comprises mostly local portraits, and each image is brimming with stories. A man in a checked shirt looks dourly at the camera, the background almost black as night. A woman holds an owl. A young man holds a camera, peering at the viewer as if considering an angle.
Deeper in the gallery, the variety continues. Millard, from Eatonville, smiles triumphantly, while Keith, in Savannah, defends his Chrysler with arms crossed. What comes through these portraits is a sense of tenderness, something beyond mere documentation. Frisell and Scher have leapt over a barrier and gotten into the lives of these people with an intimate view of them, inviting the viewer into that space. The luscious, creamy tones of these photo prints stand out among pixelly cameraphone images flooding our retinas daily. Frisell and Scher achieve these by using a 1940s Kodak Master Field Camera, a tripod-mounted large-format beast of a camera around which they have built a complete mobile darkroom, office and living space dubbed the Nomadic Photo Ark. There are no casual snapshots here; each one is staged and deliberate. This just might be the genius of the enterprise. Portraits of US has a double meaning: us, meaning we the people, and US, meaning the United States. This mosaic of individuals and community life reads as a collective statement that builds up, converges, and finally leaves the viewer with a sense of being part of a single group called Americans. arts@orlandoweekly.com

Opera Orlando’s Tosca takes shape, with plenty of midnight oil burned before the final reveal this weekend The phrase “grand opera” conjures
images of opulently dressed performers singing atop a monumental set, but few patrons truly consider the artistry and labor that goes into such epic entertainment. As the opening production of Opera Orlando’s 2023-2024 season, the team behind the scenes of Tosca is taking on those expectations, and working day and night to raise the bar on production values for their shows Friday, Oct. 27, and Sunday, Oct. 29, in the Dr. Phillips Center’s Steinmetz Hall. I was recently invited to a media preview of the upcoming production in the massive warehouse off L.B. McLeod Road that Opera Orlando shares with the Orlando Ballet and Orlando Philharmonic, to witness the effort Tosca’s design team is putting into bringing Puccini’s classic tale set in Napoleonic Wars-era Rome to life. General director Gabriel Preisser welcomed a small group of press into a vestibule virtually packed with racks of costumes before introducing foreman Ty Bargfrede, who led us on our tour of his workshop. Our first stop was in the costuming department, where wardrobe supervisor Cait Durrance and costume designer Jennifer Madison (with her infant in a baby sling) walked us through their process of combining rented pieces with new builds to create the 70-odd looks required for Tosca. On display were a richly textured red garment they’d acquired for the heroine’s Act I outfit, and a complementary coat in mid-construction for the antagonist, Baron Scarpia. The pair pay attention to period details on the surface, but must make concessions for quick costume changes: Beneath those dozens of dummy jacket buttons are concealed easyopen fasteners. “I start with my ideas about the period, and

what do I want, and then I start to pull from rentals and see what’s available,” says Madison, explaining her design process. “Depending on what options I have I start to pull builds and find fabrics, and the whole time I’m designing I have a shopping window open [because] time is very precious, so if you can buy, alter and decorate to make it work, you do it, because something is always going to pop up that needs to be built last-minute.” When asked by an aspiring young costumer in attendance how to pursue their career path, Durrance — a UCF alumna who considers herself “mostly self-taught” — recommended “just going for it [and] buying the supplies and just taking things apart, putting them back together.” Madison added that she wouldn’t advise focusing too narrowly on costuming as an undergraduate, but rather “take lots of art classes: drawing, painting, history. Anything that you find interesting is useful as a costumer.” Surprisingly, the costumer’s secret best friend these days is Amazon, according to Durrance, because “we can get [an item] immediately, and we can take a basic piece and then add on to it, alter as needed, and put it into the period.” Befitting the new season’s “Art for All” theme, the Tosca set is framed on each side and from above by enormous artworks — up to 30 feet wide and 25 feet tall — inspired by the influential French critic Diderot, each with its own equally oversized gilt picture frame. (When I arrived,
the crew was attempting to decipher which unlabeled roll contained which image without entirely unfurling them.) Though they seem substantial, the structures are actually made of lightweight foam with a poly coating that has been cleverly painted with a simulated patina. The same can’t be said of the weighty stage, a puzzle-like patchwork of pitched platforms that tilt at a wonky rake toward downstage left, crowned by a towering set of stairs. Ultimately, the off-kilter design should create a kind of forced perspective effect on the audience (and hopefully won’t induce vertigo in the cast). In order to build such an ambitious design in time to transport and install it (in collaboration Steinmetz’s IATSE stagehands), Bargfrede and company have been burning the midnight oil. “I found a job that I could put those long hours and still love my life,” he says, emphasizing that he’s worked 70-hour weeks in order to complete previous projects for the Opera, but Tosca is the biggest build they’ve ever attempted. “One of the most gratifying things for me is when we are finally on stage and have everybody in the audience be like, ‘Oh my god!’” says Bargfrede. “They don’t hear any of the whining and crying, they don’t know any of it. They just see the success.” Season subscriptions, individual tickets, and day-of student rush seats to Tosca are available. She liked the chicken; I liked the pork. But we agreed they’re both spectacular. Then came a basket of plump green veggie dumplings ($10.50). Besides a motley and fascinating kaleidoscope of an ever-evolving musician, Madd Illz’s Halloween singles also feature some of his most striking album art to date, all done by himself. The songs are available only on Bandcamp.
CONCERT PICKS THIS WEEK
Matt Heckler, The Resonant Rogues: The upshot of the breakout of acts like Mumford & Sons et al. is that folk music has been revived in the 21st century as a popular art form. The downside is that the standard has become a gentrified pop-music-with-banjos movement. But real folk connoisseurs, take note, because this bill of true North Carolina traditionalists is as pure a bottling of old Appalachia as it gets these days. Inspired by the roots of American folk music, the songs of solo multi-instrumentalist Matt Heckler exude mountain mystique. The Resonant Rogues tap the same ancient vein for a sound steeped in old-time folk and vintage country. Unlike the big crossover groups, these acts eschew the good-time gloss for folk’s darker heart, with songs that play like old ghosts rising from the hills and hollers. LOCAL RELEASES
Whether it’s “Thriller” (OK, classic), “Ghostbusters” (stop already) or, now, “Goo Goo Muck” (bless you, Wednesday), options abound for your Halloween playlist. But if you’re looking for homegrown chills, there’s no better source this year than the area’s most haunted band: C.B. Carlyle & the Desert Angels. To provide the season’s creepings, the deliciously dark gothic country act recently released the single “Evil Dead, 1923.” It’s a special remix of their song “Gloaming, 1938” from last year’s Where Bones Glow EP. While “Gloaming, 1938” is a faded, ghostly meditation, the new version is an eerie midnight hex made even more sinister with audio from Evil Dead Rise. “Evil Dead, 1923” now streams everywhere. But possibly this year’s biggest Halloween music campaign in Orlando comes from a surprising corner. None other than local battle-rap beast Madd Illz has spent the last month rolling out a flurry of Halloween singles. Though the topics are dark, the trick and treat of this remarkable eight-track series is that the music within shows a stunning rainbow of range. Illz has been gradually diversifying his palette

They used to sometimes call the Milk District “the Almond Milk District” — it made a lot more sense when the available dining options were about 50 percent vegan, before the bar and restaurant boom of the past couple of years. But one day of the year it gets back to its veg-friendly roots, and that’s Veg Fest day. The long-running, much-beloved festival is open and welcoming to all, from the hardest-core militant PETA/ Earth First member to your dairy farm-raised grandma who’s not quite sure about this “Vega” thing you bring up every Thanksgiving, and both of them will have a great day out, too. Now that the weather’s showing signs of mercy, it’s time to take full advantage of outdoor events again, and

Amyl and the Sniffers/Twin Tribes
Halloween night is going to be utterly unhinged for live music fiends in Orlando, and these two shows are definitely the eyes in the metaphorical jack-o’-lantern. In this corner you have young post-punk duo Twin Tribes, holding fell court at the Abbey with propulsive-but-dour grooves and gothic finery to spare. But if you’re more “smash every pumpkin in the neighborhood” than “dress up like a vampire and hold a séance with a Ouija board,” may we recommend Amyl and the Sniffers’ show at the Beacham? The Australian punk riot squad live up to all of the sleazy, unpredictable

[ free will astrology ] BY ROB BREZSNY
SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21): Scorpio author Ófeigur Sigurðsson writes, “You should never do what’s expected of you; there’s always another path through life than the one before you.” I wouldn’t recommend his approach to any other zodiac sign but Scorpio. And I would only advocate it for maybe 40 percent of Scorpios 10 percent of the time. The coming weeks will be one of those 10 percent times. So if you are among the 40 percent who would thrive on this demanding but potentially exhilarating counsel, get ready to be as original and imaginative in living your life as you have ever been. Halloween costume suggestion: unicorn, dragon or phoenix.
PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20): “The secret for harvesting the greatest fruitfulness and enjoyment is to live dangerously!” Philosopher Friedrich Nietzsche said that. “Build your cities on the slopes of Vesuvius!” he added. “Send your ships into uncharted seas!” As for you in the coming weeks, Pisces, I don’t recommend you live dangerously, but I do suggest you live adventurously. Surpass your limits, if you dare! Transcend your expectations and explore the frontiers. Those activities will be a good use of your life energy and are likely to be rewarded. Halloween costume suggestions: daredevil, swashbuckler, gambler, fortune-hunter or knight-errant.
SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21): The third most common item in landfills is disposable diapers; those diapers seem to be among the least ecologically sound products. Or maybe not. Japanese researchers at the University of Kitakyushu have made building materials out of them in combination with gravel, sand and cement. (Read more: tinyurl.com/betterwaste). In the spirit of this potentially glorious alchemical transmutation, and in accordance with astrological omens, I encourage you to ruminate on how you might convert wasted stuff into usable valuables in your own sphere. Halloween costume suggestion: A janitor or maid wearing a gold crown and pearls.
ARIES (March 21-April 19): Shadow work is a psychological practice that has been healing for me. It involves exploring the dark places in my soul and being in intimate contact with my unripe and wounded aspects. Engaging in this hard labor ensures that my less beautiful qualities never take control of me and never spill out into toxic interactions with people. I bring this up, Aries, because the coming weeks will be a favorable time for you to do shadow work. Halloween costume suggestion: Be your shadow, demon or unripe self.
CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19): Of all the ideas
propounded by major religions, the saddest is the Christian assertion that all of us are born sinful — that we come into this world with a corruption that renders us fundamentally flawed: tainted, soiled, guilty, foul. I reject this stupid nonsense. In my spiritual philosophy, we are all born gorgeous, loving geniuses. Tough experiences may diminish our radiance and make it a challenge to be our best, but we never lose the gorgeous, loving genius at our core. In accordance with astrological mandates, your task in the coming weeks is to get into close touch with this pure source. Halloween costume suggestion: your gorgeous, loving genius.
AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18): According to my
meticulous analysis of the astrological omens, you now have a sacred right to expand your ego at least one full size. Even two sizes will probably be fine. Your guardian angel is lobbying for you to strut and swagger, and so are your muses, your ancestors and God Herself. I hope you will overcome any shyness you feel about expressing your talents, your intelligence and your unique understanding of the world. Halloween costume suggestion: a charming braggart, charismatic egomaniac or beautiful narcissist.
TAURUS (April 20-May 20): The country where I live, the United States, has banned over 2,500 books in recent years. I’m appalled by the ignorance that fuels this idiotic despotism. But there has been an amusing consequence, which I am pleased to report: Banning the books has sometimes hiked their sales. Gender Queer by Maia Kobabe had a 130 percent increase. Art Spiegelman’s Maus I and Maus II jumped 50 percent. Let this scenario serve as an inspirational metaphor for you in the coming weeks. If any person or institution tries to repress, deny or resist you, do what you’re doing even bigger and better. Use their opposition as a power boost. Halloween costume suggestion: rebel, dissident or protester. GEMINI (May 21-June 20): Do you ever feel you are treated unfairly at your job? Is your workplace sometimes detrimental to your health? Is it possible that a few small changes could add up to a big improvement in how you feel while you’re earning a living? There’s rarely a perfect moment to address these concerns, but the coming weeks will be a more favorable time than usual. If you decide to seek shifts, devise a strategy that’s as foolproof as possible. Resolve to be calm, poised and unflusterable. Halloween costume suggestion: a worker doing your ideal job. CANCER (June 21-July 22): Cancerian comedian Dave Barry says that as he grows older, he
looks forward to “continued immaturity.” That sentiment is probably based on the fact that his humor is often juvenile and silly. (I like it, though!) I’m guessing it’s also because he aspires to remain youthful and innocent and surprisable as he ages. I mention this, fellow Cancerian, because the coming weeks will be an excellent time to celebrate and honor the parts of you that are still blooming but not yet in full blossom. Be grateful you have not become a jaded know-it-all. Would you consider revisiting joys you loved as a child and teenager? Halloween costume suggestion: your younger self.
LEO (July 23-Aug. 22): Horseshoes have
symbolized good luck in many cultures. A common usage is to hang them over front doors. But there’s disagreement about the best way to generate the good fortune. Some people say the open end of the horseshoe should point upward, since that collects the luck. Others insist it’s best for the horseshoe to point down, as that showers luck on those who enter and leave the house. If you experiment with this fun myth, I advise you to point the open end up. It’s time for you to gather blessings, help and fortuity. Halloween costume accessories: good luck charms like a four-leaf clover, acorn, cat’s eye gemstone, ankh, dragon, laughing Buddha, Ganesh statue and horseshoe.
VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22): There would be no life on earth if it weren’t for the sun. Our home star’s energy is the central force at work in the creation and sustenance of all humans, animals and plants. Yet we must be sure not to get extravagant amounts of our good thing. An overabundance of solar heat and radiance can cause failed crops, dehydration, droughts, skin cancer and wildfires. Are other factors at work in your sphere that are also nourishing in moderate amounts but unhealthy in excess? And do you know when just right becomes too much? Now is a favorable time to ruminate on these matters. Halloween costume suggestion: Goldilocks, Lady Justice with her scales, or a body suit adorned with a giant yin-and-yang symbol. LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22): The earliest known
human settlement is Göbekli Tepe, in what’s now the country of Turkey. When archaeologists first excavated it in 1994, they realized it was built over 11,000 years before. This was shocking news, since it dramatically contradicted previous estimates of how long people have lived in villages. I’m predicting a comparable shift in your understanding of your own past, Libra. The full effect may not be apparent for months, but there will be interesting jolts soon. Halloween costume suggestion: archaeologist, time traveler or yourself in a past life. orlandoweekly.com ● OCT. 25-31, 2023 ● ORLANDO WEEKLY
