Eight arrested after downtown shoving match between pro-Palestine protesters and OPD bike cops, Orlando Starbucks workers vote in favor of unionizing, and other news you may have missed last week.

» Investigation underway after Orlando cops, pro-Palestine protesters clash downtown
A use-of-force investigation has been launched and eight people arrested following a clash between officers and pro-Palestine protesters, Orlando Police Department says. According to OPD, 20 individuals peacefully demonstrated near Lake Eola around 4 p.m. last Saturday. The demonstration was monitored by officers from downtown and Parramore bike units before concluding at 5:15 p.m. At around 5:30 p.m., bike officers responded to a “disturbance” near the Publix on East Central Boulevard, where some protesters were arguing with “a person of opposing views.” A video released by OPD Sunday shows a series of clips of officers’ body-camera footage, covering some of the incident, which appears to have quickly turned into a physical clash between some protesters and officers. OPD says this footage “shows the level of agitation of the demonstrators and their willingness to physically attack officers while in the process of making arrests and keeping the peace.” In a release shared last Sunday night, OPD stated, “When officers attempted to separate the two parties, a member of the Pro-Palestine demonstration group lunged toward an OPD officer and the opposing citizen in a physically threatening manner.” The video ends by saying a use-of-force investigation is underway. Eight people were ultimately arrested on various charges, including disorderly conduct, battery on a law enforcement officer, resisting arrest with violence and resisting arrest without violence, OPD says.
» Judge wants doctor to face $10K fine for abortions performed at Orlando clinic An administrative law judge last Thursday said a physician should face a $10,000 fine and a reprimand after she did not comply in 2022 with a law requiring 24-hour waiting periods before abortions can be performed. The case stems from abortions that Candace Sue Cooley, an obstetrician and gynecologist, performed at the Center of Orlando for Women clinic during a two-week period immediately after the waiting-period law took effect. The Florida Department of Health last month filed a document at the state Division of Administrative Hearings that called for revoking Cooley’s license to practice medicine. But in a 19-page recommended order Thursday, Administrative Law Judge James H. Peterson III said Cooley should pay a $10,000 fine and be reprimanded. Peterson wrote that “the violation was unintentional and occurred despite reasonable efforts by the clinic and [Cooley] to determine the effective date of the waiting period. … There was nothing readily accessible online about the final judgment having been issued on April 25, 2022. [The state Agency for Health Care Administration]’s subsequent after-the-fact notice to providers on June 9, 2022, was insufficient to provide timely and effective information as to the effective date of the amended law.” The judge also wrote that “the evidence indicates that no patients suffered physical harm as a result of respondent’s violation.” But in the document last month calling for revocation of Cooley’s license, the Department of Health said Cooley was responsible for knowing when the waiting-period law took effect: “Ultimately, respondent had a duty as a licensed physician to ensure that her practice of medicine was in accordance with Florida law.” Under administrative law, Peterson’s recommended order will go to the Department of Health and the state Board of Medicine for final action.
» Orlando Starbucks workers vote in favor of union
After filing a petition for a union election earlier this month, Starbucks workers in Orlando’s tourism district voted 10-7 in support of unionizing. This establishes the first unionized corporate-owned Starbucks in Orlando and the 11th to unionize in Florida. “Winning this election means that we have succeeded in gaining agency as partners to have our jobs protected and to finally have the ability to have our voices heard,” said Yomna Abdellatif, a barista at the newly unionized location at 13401 Blue Heron Beach Drive. Those workers will now join more than 11,000 workers at nearly 500 Starbucks locations that have unionized with Starbucks Workers United since 2021. The growing union movement among Starbucks workers has bucked trends, particularly in the U.S. South. Nationally, just 1.4 percent of food and drink service workers belonged to a union as of last year. But militant organizing by non-union auto workers, fast-food workers, Amazon logistics workers and Starbucks Workers United has led some labor experts to consider whether the legacy of the anti-union South is beginning to crack. A strong majority of Americans (70 percent) now say they support labor unions, according to Gallup’s latest annual survey, with only 23 percent saying that they disapprove of unions.
» State approves $200 million plan for New College of Florida, despite concerns about spending
A five-year, multimillion-dollar effort to expand student enrollment and continue other major changes at New College of Florida was approved last Wednesday by the state university system’s Board of Governors, despite some concerns about the spending. The Board of Governors approved a New College strategic plan, which will allow the school to receive $15 million that was included in the state budget. The plan also puts the small liberal-arts college on pace to request more than $200 million over the next five years. “We are supporting the spending of a lot more money to educate a very small number of students that already cost exponentially more of state taxpayer dollars to educate, and I personally have concerns about that,” said Board of Governors member Eric Silagy, who voted against the plan during a meeting at the University of South Florida in Tampa. Silagy, a former president and CEO of Florida Power & Light, said the funding is “the equivalent of USF (the University of South Florida) asking for $13 billion” over five years. Silagy calculated that New College spent nearly $91,000 per student based on a 2023-2024 enrollment of 732 students, while the average for the state university system is about $10,000 per student. Silagy also questioned plans to increase student-athlete enrollment at the Sarasota college to 36 percent of the student body over the next decade. New College has undergone major changes during the past two years, with Gov. Ron DeSantis remaking its Board of Trustees and former state House Speaker Richard Corcoran taking over as college president. It has tried to bulk up enrollment through adding athletic programs while taking controversial steps such as deciding to eliminate the school’s gender studies program. Corcoran told the Board of Governors he was given the responsibility of rapidly turning around New College, and “that’s what we’re doing.”
ONE STRIP AT A TIME
Orange County overdose prevention program Largest Heart aims to save lives, one fentanyl test strip at a time with their Test Before You Try program
BY MCKENNA SCHUELER
When Peter Cook was in the throes of alcoholism seven years ago, he didn’t imagine he would eventually work to help others who similarly lived and suffered from addiction. In 2017, Peter’s brother Andrew gave him the push and resources he needed to get help and begin his path towards recovery.
Just weeks after, however, Andrew unexpectedly passed away in southern Chile, while on vacation. According to his obituary, Andrew was just 39 years old, a “dedicated Christian” and an English teacher.
For Peter, a resident of Winter Garden, his brother’s sudden passing was a tragedy that led him to where he is today, working by day as the Director of Business Development for Central Florida Behavioral Hospital and as head of a local nonprofit.“Where passion meets purpose,” he told Orlando Weekly
On his brother’s birthday, in August 2018, Cook officially formed his local nonprofit organization, Largest Heart, a grassroots harm reduction project. Cook “literally Googled ‘how to start a nonprofit,’” he admitted sheepishly, but also with pride.
Earlier this year, Largest Heart was one of two organizations, along with Project Opioid, that was chosen by the Orange County government to lead a new effort to prevent accidental drug overdose.
Over the last decade, fatal drug overdoses in the county have surged more than 250 percent, from 175 deaths in 2014 to roughly 450 last year. A majority are tied to illicit forms of the opioid fentanyl, which is largely coming from U.S. citizens (not migrants) smuggling it across legal points of entry at the U.S. Southern Border, according to immigration authorities.
The idea of Largest Heart’s project, called “Test Before You Try,” is to expand access to fentanyl test strips: small, inexpensive paper strips that can tell you whether there is fentanyl in your drugs. They’re simple to use, about 96 to 100 percent accurate when used correctly, and can save lives.
Until last year, these strips were technically illegal to have, sell or give away in Florida, simply due to being classified under old state statutes as “drug paraphernalia.” State lawmakers in Florida, and over two dozen other states
with similar statutes on the books, however, have altered their state laws on paraphernalia in recent years to change that.
So far, Largest Heart has distributed over 38,000 fentanyl testing kits throughout the county, which (thanks to a partnership with DanceSafe) contain testing strips as well as instructions for how to use them.
Cook stressed that distributing these kits is not a push to use drugs — “We don’t encourage drug use,” he affirmed — but to make sure that if you, a friend or a roommate does use, they’re doing so safely, without risking their life.“It’s an empowerment program,” he explained.
Fentanyl, a synthetic opioid up to 50 times more potent than the illicit opioid heroin, has driven the country’s overdose crisis in recent years, killing nearly 75,000 people in the U.S. last year alone.
IT CAN HAPPEN TO ANYONE
What’s most dangerous about this potent drug is where it’s being found. Lab testing from the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) found that 7 out of every 10 counterfeit pills they seized last year contained a lethal dose of fentanyl.
Just two milligrams, comparable to just a few grains of table salt, can be deadly. And it’s been found laced into a wide range of illegally produced drugs, including drugs like cocaine, meth, fake pills marketed by dealers under different names, and unregulated forms of marijuana.
What Largest Heart is attempting to do is “not condemning somebody for making a bad decision,” said Cook, referring to illicit drug use, “but educating them.” Making sure that if someone does choose to take a pill at a party or smoke a blunt, they’re not unknowingly putting their life on the line. Substance use experts have warned that you don’t have to have a drug addiction or even regularly use drugs in order to accidentally lose your life.
You can be a teenager or college student who, facing peer pressure, takes a pill someone hands you at a party. You’re told it’s Xanax — a central nervous system depressant commonly prescribed for anxiety — but it’s not. You don’t know this, of course, so you take the pill. Your limbs become heavy. Your face becomes
clammy, pale or ashen. Your breathing slows, then stops. You lose consciousness. And you never wake up.
It’s not just a Lifetime movie or some D.A.R.E ad. It’s an actual horror story playing out across the country, quietly devastating parents, friends and communities. Although drug use among youth, specifically, has declined in recent years, teen overdose rates have surged. Counterfeit prescription pills containing fentanyl are believed to be a contributing cause.
According to data from the Orange County Medical Examiner’s Office, reviewed by Orlando Weekly , at least four teenagers in Orange and Osceola Counties have died of drug overdose this year alone. All four deaths involved fentanyl, and were marked as accidental deaths. In total, the office has identified 263 drug-involved deaths in Orange and Osceola counties this year so far, with fentanyl specifically involved in the vast majority.
“Anytime somebody buys a pill off the street, they should assume it’s more likely that it’s contaminated with fentanyl,” Dr. Thomas Hall, director of the Orange County Office for a Drug-Free Community, told Orlando Weekly earlier this year.
Several adults who died of fatal drug overdose this year were identified by the Medical Examiner’s Office as “transient,” meaning they were homeless. But the vast majority of people who died had a listed home address.
Overdose deaths surged dramatically during the COVID-19 pandemic, as people found themselves cut off from others, struggling with mental health, and more vulnerable to using drugs and alcohol to cope. Those who used drugs were also more likely to use them alone, and therefore did not have someone around to call 911 or administer Narcan (a life-saving opioid overdose reversal drug) if they collapsed.
In Orange County, drug overdose deaths reached their peak in 2021. More than 500 people died of drug overdose that year, up from 172 deaths in 2014 and 342 deaths in 2019. The number of fatal overdoses has declined some since, with a slight increase documented last year, but the number of lives lost has remained above pre-pandemic levels.
“We’ve never seen anything like it,” said
Cook. “We’re gonna lose a generation of kids to deadly fentanyl.”
A COMMUNITY EFFORT
The fentanyl test strip distribution effort led by Cook’s nonprofit Largest Heart is being funded by a small portion of what Orange County has received so far through national settlements with opioid manufacturers and distributors.
Altogether, the county will receive an estimated $60 million payout from those settlements, distributed over the next 15 to 18 years. The county has already earmarked funds for projects such as overdose awareness campaigns for adults and youth, a mobile medication-assisted treatment clinic for opioid addiction (expected to launch next month), and a new addiction treatment program that just launched this month in Parramore for uninsured residents.
Project Opioid, an Orlando-based profit also focused on reducing overdose deaths, has also received funds to distribute fentanyl test strips. They’re focusing on passing out fentanyl test strips downtown outside nightclubs and bars on the weekends.
Largest Heart’s program has been approved for $61,000 in funding, according to Cook, which comes through reimbursement from the county. “Largest Heart pays for this all upfront,” said Cook, who admitted they’re operating “on a shoestring budget.”
Since March, Largest Heart has been passing out fentanyl test strip kits at community events, including 8,000 at Orlando’s Juneteenth Celebration, and has also given them away to local businesses or organizations that ask, such as food pantries and the LGBT+ Center Orlando.
It’s become a community effort. Park Ave CDs, one of Orlando’s most beloved indie music retailers, has been “one of our best community partners,” Cook gushed. “They are so about protecting and loving on this community in Orlando. It’s absolutely amazing.”
Another surprise: “Law enforcement loves them,” he added. The library system is also interested in getting kits to pass out, and local schools, grappling with their own role in preventing accidental overdose among students, have also shown interest. “We had elementary schools requesting these,” Cook said.
Not having an advertising budget for Test Before You Try, he admitted, is one of their biggest challenges in spreading the word. In addition to fentanyl test strips, they’ve also distributed Narcan, the opioid overdose reversal medication. Narcan, or its generic version naloxone, can be purchased from places like Publix, or you can get it for free at different access sites throughout the state, or request it via mail.

Beyond distribution, the idea is to reduce stigma and create openings for conversations about drug use and harm reduction. It could ultimately be a cost-saving effort, too. When or if someone overdoses, the ambulance costs, healthcare costs and other criminal justice system costs can add up for communities.
Similarly, drug addiction can result in lost productivity, health conditions and reduced quality of life, and becomes more costly to treat as conditions become more severe or chronic. Nationally, fatal opioid overdose can cost hundreds of billions of dollars each year, research has found, while treatment for addiction and harm reduction strategies such as fentanyl test strips can be more cost-effective.
Cook’s organization recently secured an agreement with Volusia County to expand their fentanyl test strip distribution there. He’s currently in talks with the Osceola County government as well, saying, “My goal is to take this statewide.”
He’s been speaking with state legislators in the area who might be interested in sponsoring a request for state funds. One of them is Democratic Sen. Geraldine Thompson, who hosted the city’s Juneteenth celebration in Orlando. A legislative aide for Thompson confirmed the senator is considering the request, but has not yet made a decision on whether to sponsor.
Cook admitted, due to stigma, sometimes you have to craft your pitch for fentanyl test strip kits on the fly, depending on who you’re talking to. But it’s not always hard. Cook said one grandmother came up to him at an event his nonprofit attended and cried on his shoulder, thanking him for his work. Her teenage grandson had died, he recalled, after smoking marijuana laced with fentanyl.
For a young person headed to college who doesn’t use drugs, and doesn’t plan to, he explains to them, “This isn’t for you. This is for your roommate.” For parents, he tells them, “Like, I know your kid’s never gonna smoke weed, but if they do, here you go.”
Ultimately, it’s laying out the stakes: Thousands of people die of accidental overdose each year. And you never know who could be next.

Federal judge refuses to toss lawsuit alleging Florida failed to prevent sewage dumps that led to manatee deaths
BY JIM SAUNDERS, NSF
Afederal judge this week refused to dismiss a lawsuit alleging that Florida has violated the Endangered Species Act because of sewage discharges into the Indian River Lagoon that have helped lead to manatee deaths.
U.S. District Judge Carlos Mendoza issued a 30-page ruling that rejected a motion by the Florida Department of Environmental Protection to toss out the lawsuit filed in 2022 by the environmental group Bear Warriors United. Bear Warriors United contends that the department has not adequately regulated sewage-treatment plants and septic systems, leading to discharges that killed seagrass — a vital food source for manatees — in a northern stretch of the Indian River Lagoon. Manatees have died in recent years because of starvation. The state raised a series of arguments in seeking dismissal, including that Bear Warriors United did not have legal standing to pursue the case. But Mendoza wrote, for example, that the group is seeking a series of steps to curb manatee deaths and that he can “easily conclude that if this court were to find in favor of plaintiff, it is likely that fewer protected manatees would be harmed by pollutive sewage.”
“FDEP (the department) is responsible for regulating, permitting, and revoking (septic systems) and wastewater treatment facilities,” Mendoza wrote. “FDEP has designed and implemented remediation plans to address the nutrient pollution problem in the North IRL (Indian River Lagoon). The (lawsuit) alleged that FDEP’s ongoing failure to use its authority to regulate the sewage more efficiently continues to harm manatees, and thus constitutes an unlawful taking. Therefore, plaintiff has met its causation requirement for standing purposes because its alleged injury is fairly traceable to defendant’s action or inaction.”
The ruling does not resolve the underlying issues in the lawsuit. Bear Warriors United and the state in June filed competing motions for summary judgment. If Mendoza grants summary judgment to either side, it would short-circuit the need for a trial.
In its motion for summary judgment, Bear Warriors United said the department “has known for decades that the septic tanks and wastewater plants it authorizes release human nitrogen” that causes such problems as algae blooms in the lagoon.
“DEP thus authorizes the destruction of the
lagoon’s ability to sustain seagrass and other macroalgae which are essential food sources for the manatees’ survival,” the group’s attorneys wrote. “As such, DEP’s regulatory regime for septic tanks and wastewater plants directly and indirectly results in the ongoing unlawful ‘take’ of manatees, in violation of (a section of the Endangered Species Act), and this court must issue an injunction requiring compliance with the ESA (Endangered Species Act) to prevent further take of manatees.”
But in the department’s motion for summary judgment, attorneys wrote that the state has taken steps in recent years to try to reduce discharges into the lagoon and disputed that it has violated the Endangered Species Act. The motion said the department’s “actions are not the proximate cause of any harm” to manatees, which are classified as a threatened species.
“The record shows that DEP has not authorized or entitled any party to cause a violation of water quality standards,” the state’s motion said. “It has, instead, worked diligently to restore an impaired water. There is no proximate cause. DEP is entitled to judgment as a matter of law because with no dispute of material fact, it has not violated the ESA.”
The lawsuit involves part of the Indian River Lagoon from the Melbourne Causeway in Brevard County to Turnbull Creek in southern Volusia County.
Florida had a record 1,100 manatee deaths in 2021, with the largest number, 358, in Brevard County, the focus of the lawsuit.
The state had 800 manatee deaths in 2022, before the number dropped to 555 in 2023, according to Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission data. As of last week, the state had totaled 451 manatee deaths this year, with the most, 76, in Brevard County. news@orlandoweekly.com

Around the world with a silent
shares the ‘language of emotion’ in an utterly novel way
For nearly 10 years, Brooklyn-born composer Murray Hidary has toured the globe with MindTravel , his improvisational “silent piano” concert experience, which comes to Orlando’s Lake Eola Park Wednesday evening (6-8 p.m., Sept. 25, $15-$45). I recently interviewed the multidisciplinary artist while he was in St. Petersburg preparing to perform for an audience of 600, and asked Hidary about …
… his early interest in music:
I was 5 years old when I started playing music. I grew up with music, playing the cello and then the piano at 5 and 6 years old, respectively. Very quickly, the piano became a real kind of refuge for me, a real solace for me; a way to just kind of get lost in my imagination. I was quite shy as a kid and definitely more introverted, and so the piano became this means of expression. By the time I got to high school, I knew I wanted to be a composer.
… studying under Philip Glass:
I was fortunate enough to meet Philip Glass, and got to have him mentor me for a brief time. … I would go to his studio and share my music and play on his piano, where he wrote Einstein on the Beach and all of that. So it was a pretty remarkable kind of fortune for me as a young man, starting out with my music and looking to find my voice. That’s something I think he really helped me with.
… Eastern meditation’s influence on his compositional method:
As a composer, you learn to improvise, to find patterns and melodies and harmonies and see what comes out, and then use that in a composition. But for me, that process of improvising took on a life of its own and became its own experience. It became its own extemporaneous, meditative experience for me, just sitting at home, doing it alone. I would have sessions where I would go for an hour or longer and just get lost [in] the music. … It kept evolving [to] have the arc of a story through the music over
… memorable locations he’s performed MindTravel in:
We’ve taken this coast to coast. We actually did two different cross-country trips, taking it through every state, across from the East Coast to the West Coast, from the Midwest to the South. Most of the time we are [at] beaches and parks. … I played the other day with a distant lightning storm over the ocean all the way on the horizon, and it was a light show; it was incredible, and I got to improvise to that.
Believe it or not, this piano has been on the ice of Antarctica. I went on an expedition with 150 people [and] we put it on a plane [from] the tip of Argentina, then we put it on a ship. There’s very strict rules about what you can do on Antarctica and what you can bring. One of the rules is you can’t have any amplified sound to disturb the wildlife [but] they allowed us to do it because of the headphones. It’s also been at the Pyramids of Giza and in the Serengeti during a safari wildlife expedition.
less of an abstract reflection about a certain theme.
… traveling the world with his faux “grand piano”:
When I first started, it was a keyboard on a keyboard stand on the beach hooked up to a big battery. I missed the feel of a grand piano from playing at home and playing in concert halls. [So] I created a sculpture of a grand piano modeled off the dimensions of a Steinway that’s modular, so it actually comes apart in a dozen pieces, and I can literally check it on an airplane. It weighs less than 100 pounds [and] that’s what we assemble on the beach and in the parks all over the place, and then we place the keyboard inside. And I will tell you, probably 99 percent of people think it’s a real grand piano on the beach [but] you don’t hear anything from the outside because it runs to the mixer, where it outputs to a RF transmitter [to the audience’s headphones], so we’re essentially set up like our own radio station at the beach.
… how his sister’s death inspires Hidary’s art: It was quite a number of years after I started MindTravel that I ever even shared publicly the death of my sister and how that was the impetus for MindTravel. It was very personal, very sacred to me [until I shared] it on the TEDx stage at Berkeley. [Audience members] would come up to me and they would share their grief. They would share their story of loss, because they heard it in the music, a sadness and a melancholy. They also heard a triumphant hopefulness and a healing, and that’s what the music has done for me. It held space for my hurt, for my sadness, for my loss, which was inexpressible in any other way for me, and it enabled me to gain footing — to gain a real emotional and existential footing from which to push off [during] the lowest point of my life.
I turned to what I knew, which was music — this language of emotion, of the human experience — and said, OK, I’m going to pour myself into it. And by expressing it and pouring it out of me, it really did open something up for me in a very new way, which is what I bring to people now. skubersky@orlandoweekly.com
the course of an hour, [and] then I added the spoken word toward the end as a way to anchor people into a bit

NAPLES STAPLES
M’ama Napoli in Winter Park brings the finest from Italy’s South to South Orlando
BY FAIYAZ KARA
Previous trips to Tina’s Master Tailors on South Orlando Avenue amounted to a perfunctory drop-off of pants in need of the odd hemming or, especially of late, letting-out in the waist by an inch. Maybe two. That there now exists a Neapolitan bakery and deli next door to Tina’s serving a waist-inflating array of pastries, pizzas, sandwiches and delectables seems to indicate love handles in the vicinity are poised to receive a little more love. Or a lot, in my case. It’s a reality I succumbed to after popping into M’ama Napoli for a quick espresso.
“Do you like pistachios?” said the woman behind the counter. Her gorgeous lilt is precisely why I love speaking English with an Italian accent — you know, for the fun of it. But the “Yes, very maaach!” that came out my bombolone hole sounded more Borat than Benigni, so I quietly took a seat at the counter and
Avenue
awaited my coffee. What arrived, however, was no ordinary pistachio espresso ($4.95). It was a sculpted work of coffee art. A demitasse lined with crushed pistachios is filled with Kimbo espresso and layered, drizzled and foamed with pistachio cream. Seems like it’s made more for camera clicks than for coffee purists, but it sure as hell is pretty. The artiste is Reina Gutierrez, a polyglot barista who also provides translation services when M’ama Napoli’s owners — Lilly Solla and Luigi Diana — find themselves fumbling for words in English.
But Solla is quite clear when offering suggestions, like the “Sofia” ($13.95). Named after actress and proud Neapolitan Sophia Loren, this sandwich is the femme fatale of focaccia. The fillings, many of them imported — mortadella, burrata, basil, chopped pistachios and pistachio pesto — excite. Just as seductive is the

airy bread, baked by Luigi himself. The man is a dough maestro who ran a similar operation in Naples, Italy called Caffetteria Diana. And those in line at M’ama Napoli can’t help but be mesmerized by a display case spotlighting cornetti, sfogliatelle, rum babà, cannoli, bombolone and more. There are panini in there as well, like the porchetta-and-grilled-eggplant–stuffed “Vesuvio” ($12.95). The smoke in the sandwich, in case you’re wondering, comes courtesy of the provolone.
The pal and I couldn’t stop gushing over it during an epic lunchtime feast the following day — a day of indulgence, a day of surfeit and a day that will live in double-chinfamy.
After polishing off the handheld, the “Totò” focaccia ($13.95), named in honor of the great Neapolitan comedic actor, was next. And while it may not have been as memorable as Totò’s performance in Pasolini’s The Hawks and the Sparrows, the sandwich stuffed with prosciutto, mozz, shaved parm, tomatoes and arugula was noteworthy nevertheless. An all-veg “Caruso” focaccia ($13.95) introduced artichokes to the quartet of grilled eggplant, provolone, tomatoes and arugula, and the notes they hit roused.
Of course there was pizza. Not of the traditional Neapolitan variety we’ve come to know and love, but a more rustic version with a heftier base. “Neapolitan-style pizzas are made by trained pizzaiolos in proper wood ovens,” said Solla. “These are pizzas we bake at home.” No question, the pomodoro ($12.95) comprised all the homey feels. Rest assured, it was no rotten tomato.
But now, our seemingly limitless appetites appeared to enter a realm of absurdity: La Grande Bouffe meets La Dolce Vita. The scene opened with a plain croissant ($4.95), ordered for structural inspection purposes only, and closed, naturally, with the sweetest of endings. That croissant, by the way, passed muster, but a croissant stuffed with strawberries and cream ($5.95) triggered our collective pleasure reflexes. It also had me longing for maritozzi, those poofy, cream-stuffed balls of brioche commonly found in Rome. So good thing we ordered a bombolone — specifically, the fried donut with apricot filling ($5.95). And good thing we also ordered a sfogliatelle ($3.45), because these flaky, orange-scented wonders sell out fast. Belts, somewhat inevitably, had to be loosened, but that didn’t stop us from downing delizia al limone ($7.95), Amalfi’s most famous dessert, with diabetic abandon.
This was the day of the expanding man and, luckily for us, Tina’s Master Tailors was open. fkara@orlandoweekly.com
OPENINGS & CLOSINGS:
Kwame Boakye has brought two of his concepts — Cow & Cheese and That Wing Spot — together under one roof in Winter Park. Cow & Cheese in Maitland and That Wing Spot in SoDo continue to operate normally … Heather LaVine, owner of Golden Hour Wine in Baldwin Park, will open Quicksand, a natural wine bar with a Eurocentric wine bar menu at 1903 E. Colonial Drive in Mills 50. Guests can “sink in” to Quicksand by the end of the year … Live! at the Pointe Orlando has opened at the International Drive destination. Billed as an entertainment district for dining, live music, nightlife and events, Live! has opened comprising venues Sports & Social, PBR Cowboy Bar, Houndsmen Lounge and Shark Bar. Apopka-Vineland Road near Daryl Carter Parkway … Koyla Pakistani BBQ specializing in charcoal-grilled meats, chaats, rolls, burgers and biryani, has opened at 4990 W. Irlo Bronson Memorial Highway … Kappy’s Subs has come to a lease agreement with the property’s owners — LJB Florida Properties LLC, run by James Bolen. No word on the length of the lease, but one interesting fact: Bolen, who paid more than $900,000 for the Kappy’s property this month, also runs Bolen Properties LLC, which purchased the office building next door to Kappy’s in 2021 for $2,350,000. What Bolen has in mind as a long-term plan for those two parcels only he knows, but I wouldn’t bet against condos, apartments or a mixed-use retail complex.

GHOST IN THE MACHINE
Does Midi Memory/Cathedral Bells mainman
Matt Messore dream of electric sheep?
BY MATTHEW MOYER
Chalk it up to creative restlessness, pandemic lockdown boredom, or even otherworldly auras and energies from when he lived near Cassadaga, but by early 2021 fronting Cathedral Bells just wasn’t enough for Matt Messore.
Shoegazers Cathedral Bells, Messore’s main gig, have been active since 2018 and — by dint of some intense roadwork and albums like Ether and Velvet Spirit — went from humble Orlando beginnings to some serious national exposure with their hazy, blissed-out dream-pop. And while Messore was nowhere near ready to retire that project, he was ready to try his hand at
something altogether colder, more mechanized and with, he says, “darker energy.”
“I started Midi Memory at the time to release music that was a bit more darkwave and electronic. It was a fun release to write between both projects,” says Messore. “I started writing heavily in April through May of 2021; that shaped up [to be] the first half of the debut mini-album, Sensory Overload.”
As inspiration hit, Messore pulled out a bass guitar — his primary instrument in live Midi Memory sets as well — and a web of electronics to capture the new, dour sounds in his head. Early inspiration came from a variety of
somewhat surprising sources. Messore namechecks Aphex Twin, former Cure drummer Lol Tolhurst’s expensive scene deep-dive Goth: A History, and a late-1950s Russian film directed by Mikhail Kalatozov, The Cranes Are Flying. Music came quickly, and a project that was meant to start out with a more cinematic, atmospheric bent quickly became something very different — sleek and silky darkwave anthems.
“Originally I intended Midi Memory to be an ambient and all-instrumental project with no vocals but I fell into [more] post-punk writing formulas,” says Messore.
Midi Memory’s debut, Sensory Overload, came out by the end of 2021, less than a year after the band’s conception. After a string of singles in the interim, Midi Memory’s second album, Far Gone and Out, dropped at the beginning of this year. Orlando Weekly’s Bao Le-Huu immediately praised it as “a beguiling realm of alternative pop nostalgia, a dream state where taut synth-pop hooks and long post-punk moods mingle in a dance of stylish reflection.”
Far Gone and Out is, indeed, an accomplished collection of keening, quietly propulsive postpunk — all insistent rhythms adorned by crystalline electronics and Messore’s ghostly
vocals. Seeing Midi Memory as a live duo late last year at the Digital Nature Fest, it was clear this band is much more than a studio diversion.
And though Cathedral Bells is, in his words, the “primary project” for Messore, both projects are satisfying in different but equal ways. There is, in fact, an attraction for Messore to the “lowkey” nature of working as Midi Memory.
“I think creating Midi Memory was a great extra outlet for me aside from focusing all on Cathedral Bells. I never intended to play live with Midi Memory, ever. When I did some touring and shows it was really surreal to do, especially since I never planned to play with it live. Though I do enjoy performing live with Midi Memory, I think I enjoy recording at home with it more for fun,” explains Messore.
We couldn’t do an interview with Messore and not ask about his former stomping grounds near Cassadaga, and whether proximity to that (in)famous spiritualist community impacted or informed his music at all.
“I used to visit Cassadaga in the park and cemetery quite often from 2018-2020. I think it was inspiring with the scenery, especially walking through the woods in fall weather,” says Messore. “[It] was a good place to decompress and enjoy peaceful walks and find hidden trails.”
This weekend, Midi Memory ends a period of relative silence with a show at Will’s Pub alongside a group of other Orlando bands.
“I got asked to play this showcase … from 152 Productions that is co-promoting this event with a newer promoter under the name Cadence Collective,” says Messore. “I’ve been getting offered more local shows to play in Orlando and it’s a good way for me to stay connected in the Orlando community and get a chance to perform Midi Memory songs.”
On the elusive new-music front, things are still a bit tentative, with Messore currently focusing fully on writing the new Cathedral Bells record.“As of now there’s not much in the works, but that could always change in a heartbeat,” teases Messore.
“I lost some demos that weren’t recovered earlier this year and I haven’t been able to have the spark to write anything new yet, but I do hope to write more again soon,” says Messore, looking forward.“It’s been fun to play more local shows this summer, and hopefully I’ll get back into writing for Midi Memory.” music@orlandoweekly.com

LOCAL RELEASES
When you put about a couple decades’ worth of time into a scene as a tirelessly fertile artist who’s also a generous collaborator, you tend to rack up a lot of friends. That’s the story of Jeff Ilgenfritz, whose prolific footprint in the Orlando music scene has a length, width and depth that few can match. His résumé is a long and accomplished continuum of notable acts that reads like a shorthand history of Orlando music and includes Mumpsy, The Heathens, Moonmen From Mars, Luscious Lisa, Florida Slang, Corvus, Incorporated, Great Graves and more.
Although he was either the leader or at least a core member of most of those bands, Ilgenfritz finally struck out on his own last year with the debut of solo vehicle The Real Fritz. But already it seems that he’s back to his old familial ways on the new Real Fritz album Enough About Me. As a glorious result, this sophomore collection looks more like a studded cavalcade of Orlando stars than a solo record.
In addition to multiple bandmates in every one of the aforementioned Ilgenfritz acts, the guest list here also includes members of groups like The Sh-Booms, American Party Machine, Bob on Blonde, Dirt McCoy, The Punching Contest and Forget Myself, among others. Even though there are nearly two dozen cameos across these 10 songs, Enough About Me still plays like an unmistakably Jeff Ilgenfritz album. In fact, Enough About Me is more a return to Ilgenfritz’s famously effervescent indie-pop optimism than even The Real Fritz’s previous album, All In Now. Unlike the often reflective tenor of that 2023 debut, this new batch is a mostly upbeat ride of big, swaying hooks and more rock vigor than usual. Even the slower

songs are still lush with melodic swells. In total, the album’s a well-stocked excursion powered by sails full of gust and gusto.
Released on Post Records, Enough About Me now streams everywhere. It’s also available on limited-edition cassette via Illuminated Paths. Better yet, hear these songs live this weekend at the Real Fritz album release show with New Eagles (8 p.m. Friday, Sept. 27, Stardust Video & Coffee, free)
CONCERT PICKS THIS WEEK
Usurp Synapse, Gillian Carter, Thrull: This sick trifecta is easily the most thrilling heavy music bill this week. Indiana band Usurp Synapse channel hardcore wrath and push it over the cliff with the headlong abandon of noise
rock. Oh, but Orlando will rep just as hard with the progressive extremity of Gillian Carter and the exhilarating brutality of young supergroup Thrull. It’s a trinity that’ll hit like a smart bomb of force and fury. (8 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 26, Will’s Pub, $12-$15)
Mark Farina, Atnarko: Besides being a part of music history, one of the best things about being a city with a dance-music pedigree like ours is that there are still keepers of the flame who bring back the big-name OGs for the lifelong true believers. The latest classic heavyweight to return to the scene is house-music luminary Mark Farina. With a downtempo signature that merges Chicago house, acid jazz and San Francisco sophistication, his time-tested “mushroom jazz” sound rides a sweet, pristine frequency between chill and funky that can go all night. Go dance up close to a legend. (9 p.m. Friday, Sept. 27, Iron Cow, $25-$35)
Nanowar of Steel, Tragedy: I say this with both love and honesty, but heavy metal is one of the most hilarious music genres. It’s an inherent truth on which the best metal parody acts play. Italian goofballs Nanowar of Steel, for example, take the total piss out of metal’s unique juxtaposition of intense self-seriousness and ridiculous subject material. Yes, they’re juvenile as fuck, but so is much of heavy metal’s premise.
As for NYC opener Tragedy, their metal renditions of Bee Gees hits will both keep the party rocking and prove my long-held personal belief that passion for hard rock and the Brothers Gibb are not mutually exclusive. Succumb to the absurdity. (7 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 1, Conduit, $22) baolehuu@orlandoweekly.com

Chromeo
Chromeo, the Canadian electro-funk duo whose music contributed to the sexy, sizzling soundtrack of the early 2010s, are set to unleash their latest grooves at the Vanguard on Wednesday. Chromeo, who are touring with Atlanta-based synthwave band The Midnight, will bring “Chrome Nights” to Orange County, as well as tracks from their first album in six years, Adult Contemporary. There aren’t many contemporaries in their lane who can claim nearly two decades of consistent success, or a variety of features ranging from The-Dream to Toro y Moi. Even fewer can (jokingly) claim to be “the only successful Arab/Jewish partnership since the dawn of human culture.” The Midnight is not to be missed either; their music is guided by the Japanese phrase “mono no aware (物の哀れ),” a phrase reminding us to remember that nothing — not even their own driving beats — can last forever. 6 p.m., The Vanguard, 578 N. Orange Ave., thevanguard. live, $43-$193. — Kurt Ramos

Sexyy Red
Go on Sexyy, do your dance. Rapper Sexyy Red has hit the campaign trail — and the next stop is Orlando. Watch the Hood’s Hottest Princess take on the Addition Financial Arena Thursday as part of the “Sexyy Red 4 President” tour. The stadium tour, which has made stops at cities across the country, is sure to feature a combination of the St. Louis rapper’s biggest musical successes and viral hits, including chart-toppers “SkeeYee” and “Get It Sexyy.” Don’t miss the ample opportunities candidate Sexyy and her cabinet — Atlanta R&B artist Hunxho, Pompano Beach rapper Loe Shimmy and fellow St. Louis rapper BlakeIANA — give during the performance to turn up while keeping it passionately patriotic. They don’t say “In Sexyy We Trust” for nothing. 6 p.m., Addition Financial
Angular and perpetually tired proto-alt rockers Violent Femmes have extended the victory lap that is their “Hallowed Ground” tour and that means House of Blues becomes Visage for a night. (As a quick aside, it’s so surreal this gig is happening on the heels of Lollapalooza tourmates Jane’s Addiction’s onstage punch-up — expect only musical pyrotechnics Thursday, though.) Here’s the frankly fucking dreamy itinerary for the evening: The Femmes start the night by playing their harrowing second album, Hallowed Ground, in full. Then they take a break and play their self-titled debut platter and a collection of other numbers for the true heads. Hallowed Ground turned 40 this year and it’s still an improbably immediate listen — collecting songs frontman Gordon Gano wrote in high school, this was Southern Gothic goes college rock, incorporating folk and Appalachian balladry and rickety gospel. It’s gonna be a wild one and … oops, it’s sold out. Appeal to a higher power or a scalper. 7 p.m., House of Blues, Disney Springs, Lake Buena Vista, houseofblues.com, SOLD OUT. — Matthew Moyer

The Second City 65th Anniversary Show
Witness a celebration of a classic comedy troupe’s history and humor this weekend at this 65th anniversary show from the Second City. ensemble.” The improv troupe is renowned as a proving ground for young comics; Second City has catapulted the careers of countless comedians and actors, including Catherine O’Hara, Stephen Colbert, Keegan-Michael Key, Eugene Levy and many more. It also featured future Saturday Night Live stars like John Belushi, Bill Murray, Tim Meadows, Tiny Fey, Chris Farley and Amy Poehler. The Second City continues to be one of “the most influential names in comedy” to this day. There will be a sensory-friendly show on Sunday. 7:30 p.m., Dr. Phillips Center, 445 S. Dorian Electra
Imagine if you could combine the versatility of David Bowie’s iconic looks with the (cyber-) world music of M.I.A. Now imagine no more, for Dorian Electra is landing at the Social on Saturday for the penultimate performance of their “Fan Fare: The Encore” tour. First breaking into prominence via a feature on pop superstar Charli XCX’s track “Femmebot,” Electra’s music is primarily a symphony of raucous hyper-pop, led by a vocal delivery of coy ploys that are jagged yet precise in messaging. This intelligent and flamboyant internet sensation knows how to both flirt with interpretations of economic theories and subvert with semi-ironic tropes of Western culture’s war on gender and sexuality. For the uninitiated, their agenda might offend ya, but it’s our hope that you choose to fully embrace them by paying the $25 fare and becoming a devotee. 6 p.m., The Social, 54 N. Ray LaMontagne
Fill your weekend with nu-folk music by
WEDNESDAY–TUESDAY, SEPT. 25–OCT. 1, 2024
delving into the earthy, intimate sounds of Ray LaMontagne’s “Long Way Home” tour.
The Grammy-winning singer-songwriter and musician has produced nine studio albums over the past two decades, with his debut album, Trouble, kick-starting what’s become an enduring career in 2004. His concert is set to be a “journey through time,” featuring greatest hits and beloved fan-favorites. LaMontagne is known for the occasional venture into psychedelic pop and country-rock waters, most prominent on his fifth album Supernova, which became his third straight album to near the top regions of the Billboard 200. He has won three Boston Music Awards as well as an XM Nation Music Award. His latest album, Long Way Home, was released in August and will surely grab the spotlight. 7 p.m., Steinmetz Hall, Dr. Phillips Center, 445 S. Magnolia Ave., drphillipscenter.org, $60. — KA
SUNDAY, SEPT. 29
Buena Vista Social Orchestra
Prepare to be romanced by the sounds of warm vocal harmonies, lively brass and captivating rhythms as the Buena Vista Social Orchestra come to the Dr. Phillips Center Sunday. The storied and unique group, comprised of legendary Cuban musicians in Havana in 1996, found gradual but eventually massive success as the Buena Vista Social Club after the release of their self-titled album in 1997. The group toured around the U.S., making them one of the only Cuban groups at the time to do so. The 1999 release of the Buena Vista Social Club documentary, directed by German filmmaker Wim Wenders, tells the affecting story of the group’s legendary assemblage of talent. Today, though sadly several of the group’s members — including iconic singer Ibrahim Ferrer and pianist Rubén González — have passed away, the legacy of Buena Vista Social Club lives on through the this Orchestra. Legendary BVSC arranger and trombonist Jesús “Aguaje” Ramos lead a cast of familiar and new-
er musical faces through the works of the Buena Vista Social Club, both solo and group — making for a veritable odyssey of popular Cuban songcraft. 7 p.m., Steinmetz Hall, Dr. Phillips Center for the Performing Arts, 445 S. Magnolia Ave., drphillipscenter.org, $39.50. — LD
MONDAY, SEPT. 30
Etran de L’Aïr
One year later and our wigs are still flipped from seeing the volcanic Mdou Moctar at the Social. Well, hold on to your hairpieces because
another outfit of Tuareg rock titans are on their way downtown. Etran de L’Aïr (“Stars of the Air”) are a relatively newer proposition in the world of Tuareg international firebrands. Starting up in 1995 and releasing a string of recent albums on Portland label Sahel Sounds, they’ve made a name for themselves with (yes) celestial grooves and mantric boogies that create a joyous devotional ramble through vibrating sonic vistas. All this to say, this band is going to be positively hypnotic in the Social. 7 p.m., The Social, 54 N. Orange Ave., foundation-presents.com, $20. — MM

DRAWN BY KIERAN CASTAÑO
BY ROB BREZSNY
LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22): On the morning of Jan. 27, 1970, Libran songwriter John Lennon woke up with an idea for a new song. He spent an hour perfecting the lyrics and composing the music on a piano. Then he phoned his producer and several musicians, including George Harrison, and arranged for them to meet him at a recording studio later that day. By Feb. 6, the song “Instant Karma” was playing on the radio. It soon sold over a million copies. Was it the fastest time ever for a song to go from a seed idea to a successful release? Probably. I envision a similar process in your life, Libra. You are in a prime position to manifest your good ideas quickly, efficiently and effectively.
SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21): You have passed the test of the First Threshold. Congratulations, Scorpio! Give yourself a kiss. Fling yourself a compliment. Then begin your preparations for the riddles you will encounter at the Second Threshold. To succeed, you must be extra tender and ingenious. You can do it! There will be one more challenge, as well: the Third Threshold. I’m confident you will glide through that trial not just unscathed but also healed. Here’s a tip from the Greek philosopher Heraclitus: “Those who do not expect the unexpected will not find it.”
SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21): What development are you so ready for that you’re almost too ready? What transformation have you been preparing for so earnestly that you’re on the verge of being overprepared? What lesson are you so ripe and eager to learn that you may be anxiously interfering with its full arrival? If any of the situations I just described are applicable to you, Sagittarius, I have good news. There will be no further postponements. The time has finally arrived to embrace what you have been anticipating.
CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19): Capricorn screenwriter and TV producer Shonda Rhimes has had a spectacular career. Her company Shondaland has produced 11 prime-time TV shows, including Grey’s Anatomy and Bridgerton. She’s in the Television Hall of Fame, is one of the wealthiest women in America and has won a Golden Globe award. As you enter into a phase when your ambitions are likely to shine extra brightly, I offer you two of her quotes. No. 1: “I realized a simple truth: that success, fame and having all my dreams come true would not fix or improve me. It wasn’t an instant potion for personal growth.” No. 2: “Happiness comes from living as your inner voice tells you to. Happiness comes from being who you actually are instead of who you think you are supposed to be.”
AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18): I have performed in many poetry readings. Some have been in
libraries, auditoriums, cafés and bookstores, but others have been in unexpected places: a laundromat, a bus station, a Walmart, a grocery store and an alley behind a thrift store. Both types of locations have been enjoyable. But the latter kind often brings the most raucous and engaging audiences, which I love. According to my analysis, you might generate luck and fun for yourself in the coming weeks by experimenting with non-typical scenarios — akin to me declaiming an epic poem on a street corner or parking lot. Brainstorm about doing what you do best in novel situations.
PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20): I have two related oracles for you. No. 1: During the unfoldment of your mysterious destiny, you have had several homecomings that have moved you and galvanized you beyond what you imagined possible. Are you ready for another homecoming that’s as moving and galvanizing as those that have come before? No. 2: During your long life, you have gathered amazing wisdom by dealing with your pain. Are you now prepared to gather a fresh batch of wisdom by dealing with pleasure and joy?
ARIES (March 21-April 19): Here comes the Hating and Mating Season. I want to help you minimize the “hating” part and maximize the “mating” part, so I will offer useful suggestions. No. 1: To the degree that you can, dissolve grudges and declare amnesty for intimate allies who have bugged you. No. 2: Ask your partners to help you manage your fears; do the same for them. No. 3: Propose to your collaborators that you come up with partial solutions to complicated dilemmas. No. 4: Do a ritual in which you and a beloved cohort praise each other for five minutes. No. 5: Let go of wishes that your companions would be more like how you want them to be.
TAURUS (April 20-May 20): Many fairy tales tell of protagonists who are assigned seemingly impossible missions. Perhaps they must carry water in a sieve or find “fire wrapped in paper” or sort a heap of wheat, barley, poppyseed, chickpeas and lentils into five separate piles. Invariably, the star of the story succeeds, usually because they exploit some loophole, get unexpected help, or find a solution simply because they didn’t realize the task was supposedly impossible. I bring this up, Taurus, because I suspect you will soon be like one of those fairy-tale champions. Here’s a tip: They often get unexpected help because they have previously displayed kindness toward strangers or low-status characters. Their unselfishness attracts acts of grace into their lives.
GEMINI (May 21-June 20): You are in a phase with great potential for complex, unforeseen fun. To celebrate, I’m offering descriptions of your
possible superpowers. No. 1: The best haggler ever. No. 2: Smoother of wrinkles and closer of gaps. No. 3: Laugher in overly solemn moments. No. 4: Unpredictability expert. No. 5: Resourceful summoner of allies. No. 6: Crafty truth-teller who sometimes bends the truth to enrich sterile facts. No. 7: Riddle wrestler and conundrum connoisseur. No. 8: Lubricant for those who are stuck. No. 9: Creative destroyer of useless nonsense. No. 10: Master of good trickery. No. 11: Healer of unrecognized and unacknowledged illnesses.
CANCER (June 21-July 22): Tanzanite is a rare blue and violet gemstone that is available in just one place on earth: a five-square-mile region of Tanzania. It was discovered in 1967 and mined intensively for a few years. Geologists believed it was all tapped out. But in 2020, a self-employed digger named Saniniu Lazier located two huge new pieces of tanzanite worth $3.4 million. Later, he uncovered another chunk valued at $2 million. I see you as having resemblances to Saniniu Lazier in the coming weeks. In my visions of your destiny, you will tap into resources that others have not been able to unearth. Or you will find treasure that has been invisible to everyone else.
LEO (July 23-Aug. 22): Marathon foot races are regularly held worldwide. Their official length is 26.2 miles. Even fast runners with great stamina can’t finish in less than two hours. There’s a downside to engaging in this herculean effort: Runners lose up to 6 percent of their brain volume during a race, and their valuable gray matter isn’t fully reconstituted for eight months. Now here’s my radical prophecy for you, Leo. Unless you run in a marathon sometime soon, your brain may gain in volume during the coming weeks. At the very least, your intelligence will be operating at peak levels. It will be a good time to make key decisions.
VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22): Is there a greater waste of land than golf courses? They are typically over 150 acres in size and require huge amounts of water to maintain. Their construction may destroy precious wetlands, and their vast tracts of grass are doused with chemical pesticides. Yet there are only 67 million golfers in the world. Less than 1 percent of the population plays the sport. Let’s use the metaphor of the golf course as we analyze your life. Are there equivalents of this questionable use of resources and space? Now is a favorable time to downsize irrelevant, misused and unproductive elements. Re-evaluate how you use your space and resources.
Meet Reagan!
Reagan (A552968) is a healthy 4-year-old girl that was brought in as a stray. She and another dog had been found tied to a pole. When she first got to the shelter, she was lunging, snapping and displaying a great deal of fear and aggression. She was timid and very unsure. She warms up quicker to female staff than she does males, and even when we’re petting her, she seems a little conflicted. It’s as if half of her heart wants to pull away and hide, and the other half longs for love. Day after day, slowly but surely, we are winning her over. And the more people she meets, the more confident she becomes. She’s been here a long time, and is ready for a new chapter in her life.
For the months of September, October and November, OCAS is inviting you to fetch a new friend! This promotion reduces the adoption fees for pets in the shelter’s care for four weeks and longer. Those pets will be available for $10, while all other pets will be available at the standard rates ($55 for dogs, $40 for cats). Each adopted pet is spayed or neutered, vaccinated, and microchipped before going to their new home.
Orange County Animal Services is located at 2769 Conroy Road in Orlando, near the Mall at Millenia. The shelter is open 10 a.m.-6 p.m. every day except Wednesday, when it’s open 2-6 p.m. For more information, please call 407-836-3111 or visit ocnetpets.com.
