Readers react to stories in the Aug. 16 issue. In “Even Marco Rubio thinks Trump’s response to Charlottesville was terrible” (Aug. 16), we recounted Sen. Rubio’s six-tweet thread denouncing President Trump for failing to condemn the actions of neo-Nazis and white supremacists at Charlottesville, where three lives were lost in the violent clash between opposing protesters. @Scott Selkey The deaths and injuries were caused by angry anti-protesters who couldn’t just let the pathetic hate group be, along with other Americans who had a permit from Charlottesville to protest the removal of historical monuments. Should have let them be and maybe they wouldn’t have gotten so much publicity, and maybe the woman and pilots would still be alive. She learned a hard lesson about standing in the street opposing a hate group while being surrounded by the opposing hate group. All we know is that three are dead and many injured. Tragic day in our history.

@Erin Greene She didn’t “learn a hard lesson,” you bag of hair. She was killed. By a white supremacist, no less. @Tiffany Danielle I respect these staunch conservatives for calling a spade a spade. You can love your party and still stand up for what’s right. It’s actions like this that will erase the negative stereotypes a lot of conservatives get. @Douglas Cole He certainly has time to make a comment. He never holds any town halls. ICYMI ILLUSTRATION BY CHRIS TOBAR RODRIGUEZ

@Jason Byrd Marshall I look forward to the Senator doing something about these strong feelings of morality he suddenly has. Perhaps they’re so alien to him that he doesn’t know what to do with them? @Simon Susan Veness What Rubio says and what Rubio does are two entirely different things. If he means it, he’s got to prove it through his actions. Any damned fool can say the blindingly obvious. Now … what’s he going to DO about it?

A third orca dies at SeaWorld, a town hall for a Pulse memorial, too much news about white supremacists and other things you may have missed this week. »

Florida rocked by Charlottesville’s white supremacist rally:

State politics have been roiling after the Virginia rally that left three people dead, including a 32-year-old woman who was killed after a driver rammed his car into anti-racism protesters. The University of Florida has refused a request by white supremacist Richard Spencer to speak on campus on Sept. 12, citing “serious concerns for safety” after Charlottesville. Spencer, who was at the center of the white nationalist rally, leads the National Policy Institute, which describes itself as an organization “dedicated to the heritage, identity and future of people of European descent in the United States.” Florida Gov. Rick Scott told reporters last week he didn’t serve in the Navy to defend Neo-Nazis, and that there was no “moral equivalence” between counter-protesters and the KKK, neo-Nazi and whitesupremacist marchers. Yet Scott shied away from directly critiquing President Donald Trump, who blamed both sides for the violence and defended Confederate monuments. So much for strong rhetoric, right?

Town hall meeting on Pulse memorial set for Sept. 13:

»

Another orca dies at SeaWorld following a struggle with lung disease:

More than a year after the massacre, Orlando leaders are now starting the public process of discussing what a memorial and museum would look like at the gay nightclub Pulse. The onePULSE Foundation led by Pulse owner Barbara Poma will be holding a series of town hall conversations on the memorial honoring the 49 victims killed and countless injured on June 12, 2016. The first town hall is at 6 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 13, at the Orlando Repertory Theatre (1001 E. Princeton St.). The event is public, but seating is limited and tickets are required.

Kasatka was euthanized at SeaWorld San Diego last week after years of struggling with a bacterial respiratory infection. The 42-year-old mammal was one of SeaWorld’s oldest killer whales. In July, a 3-month-old orca named Kyara, the last killer whale born in captivity at the parks, died at SeaWorld San Antonio after complications with pneumonia. In January, the orca Tilikum, who was the focus of the documentary Blackfish, died at SeaWorld Orlando from bacterial pneumonia.

Orlando launches first all-electric LYMMO buses:

In keeping with the goal of powering 100 percent of municipal operations using renewable energy by 2030, Lynx launched its first all-electric LYMMO buses in downtown Orlando. The objective is to get the free bus system to zero emissions. Through the pilot program, Lynx will collect data from the three all-electric buses on charging times and capacity, efficiency, noise reduction, maintenance costs and rider experience. mcordeiro@orlandoweekly.com orlandoweekly.com

OK

– maybe we were tempting fate when we named 2016 the Worst Year Ever, because so far 2017 has been like, “Oh yeah? Hold my beer.” But despite the world going full dumpsterfire.gif in the last couple of weeks … months … whatever, this is the one issue of the year that is fully devoted to exploring and exposing all the things that make us love this damn town. Pat yourselves on the back, everybody – musicians, artists, public servants, shop owners, athletes, curators, fashionistas, restaurateurs, bar owners, butchers, bakers, candlestick makers. And YOU – the thousands upon thousands of you who voted in this crazy contest. Have fun reading and debating the contents, and start gearing up for next year. Us, we’re off to have a drink and a lie-down.

LOVE, ORLANDO WEEKLY

T

his year’s Best of Orlando issue was written, edited, tallied, combined and compiled with the blood, sweat and tears of Monivette Cordeiro, Liv Jonse, Holly V. Kapherr, Faiyaz Kara, Seth Kubersky, Bao Le-Huu, Matthew Moyer, Thaddeus McCollum, Richard Reep, Moriah Russo, Matthew Weller and Jessica Bryce Young. Intern Virginia Vasquez did her best to check everyone’s work. Digital editor Colin Wolf had the Herculean task of wrangling it all onto our website. Chris Tobar Rodriguez designed the issue, with the illustrations of Nathaniel Rios, who goes by 2NES UNOe in paint (see more of his work in Orlando at the WestArt District), and took photos, along with Yesenia Lima, Jeremy Reper, Lindsey Thompson and Rob Bartlett. Ads were sold by Jeff Kruse, Leslie Egan, Scott Navarro, Jerrica Schwartz, Scott Spar and Dan Winkler. Production manager Melissa McHenry, with designers Ian Jones and Daniel Rodriguez, put it all together. Hollie Mahadeo, Allysha Willson and Danielle Lebron organized and ably assisted the sales, production and circulation teams, under the watchful eye of publisher Graham Jarrett. Ted Modeste and his team of drivers will deliver the issue all over Orlando. And Rachel Hoyle, Zackary Rowe and Brad Van De Bogert are planning the party of the year (tonight!) to celebrate the issue.

BEST, BIGGEST, BLONDEST HOLE IN OUR HEARTS Billy Manes May 22, 1972–July 21, 2017

The loss of Orlando Weekly’s longest-term writer and foundational voice is devastating not just to his friends and family, not just to his colleagues, but to all of Orlando. Our bereavement is nothing compared to the loss of potential that his departure from this mortal plane represents – but we take some comfort in knowing that his husband, Tony Mauss, has launched the Billy Manes Foundation, which will work to fund various literary and advocacy issues. And, per Billy’s request, Mauss will also finish the memoir Billy started but didn’t have time to finish. Rest in power, Citizen Manes.

BEST USE OF RAINBOW PAINT Lake Eola bandshell 512 E. Washington St.

We’ve seen a lot of rainbows in Orlando in honor of the 49 people who were killed at the gay nightclub Pulse last year. Some, like the ribbons made by Ben Johansen, are small, while others, like the 49 rainbow birds mural in Mills 50 by Andrew Spear, are much larger. But our favorite rendition of this LGBTQ symbol so far has been the one painted on Orlando’s traditional gathering place – the Lake Eola bandshell. Local residents Deborah and Lauren Jane Gilmore, who proposed the idea, have stated that each color has a meaning: red to represent love; orange to represent Orange County; yellow for faith and hope; green for the fragility and renewal of life; blue to represent the collective sadness felt after Pulse and to honor first responders; and purple to represent valor and bravery. This remembrance is a colorful reminder that despite the darkness after Pulse, hope and light has endured. PHOTO BY MONIVETTE CORDEIRO

BEST FASHION CHOICE Buddy Dyer’s beard This was probably the toughest call we had to make, but in the deepest confines of our (hairy) hearts, we knew it was the right one. Edging out state Rep. Carlos Guillermo Smith and his weed-leaf socks, Orlando Mayor Buddy Dyer and his beard iterations captivated local social media feeds as he went from a baby-faced elected official to a lumberjack-lite public servant in November to raise awareness for men’s health issues. Our fashion interest was further piqued when Orlando’s longest-serving mayor posted a high-school throwback photo of himself in 1976 sporting an incredibly large and fuzzy ’fro that was apparently natural. It’s so poppin’, we wouldn’t be surprised if people went to their local hair stylists asking for Dyer’s bushy bowling ball look.

BEST GIRL BOSS Chandra Arthur of Friendish friendishapp.com

We swipe left and right to find love (or whatever); why not use the same concept of matching via shared interests to find new friends? That’s the genius idea behind local tech developer Chandra Arthur’s Friendish app, which she shortcuts as “a Platonic Tinder.” In July, she was chosen to appear on Apple’s Planet of the Apps, a Shark Tankstyle web series that matches developers with industry mentors. Between this and Arthur’s sizzling TEDx talk on how much time female and POC entrepreneurs have to spend code-switching, we’d say it’s clear we have a rising star on our hands. 20

BEST SWAMP GIRL Savannah Boan, new education ambassador at Gatorland gatorland.com

Savannah Boan has long been a friend of the paper – she featured for many years as Billy Manes’ sidekick in his Blister column, back in her days as “the Sexy Savannah,” a Monsters in the Morning radio regular. The 6-foottall platinum-haired former Marine played the dumb blonde persona to perfection, but underneath that South Carolina drawl, there was always a brain working quicker than a crocodile’s jaw can snap. Fitting, then, that she’s returned to the Orlando area in full Swamp Girl glory after a stint in SoCal as a snake handler at the Reptile Zoo to serve as animal education ambassador and “crocodilian enrichment coordinator” at Gatorland. And it’s no gimmick, either – to hear her tell it, she digs gators more than most humans. Brains, beauty and boldness … our kinda girl.

BEST USE OF OUR TAX DOLLARS Drag Queen Storytime June 12, 2017 ocls.info

On June 12, the Orlando Public Library took a page out of the books of sister institutions from San Francisco to Brooklyn and scheduled a Drag Queen story hour. June 12, of course, is officially designated “Orlando United Day: A Day of Love and Kindness,” and local performer Miss Sammy was joined by RuPaul’s Drag Race contestant BenDeLaCreme for some G-rated storytelling for kiddies and enlightened parents. Talk about a reading rainbow! We pray that they do it again, since the reservations for 500 seats filled up faster than we could snap our fingers. But to the “concerned citizens” who tried to put a damper on this fabulous event with their officious protestations, we have this to say: Sashay away, sourpusses. No, seriously – other people’s opinions matter too, so stop trying to pee on everyone’s pillow. Don’t like it? Don’t show up.

BEST WPA HOMAGE Downtown Credo’s Orlando Parks Project downtowncredo.com/conduit/parks-project

We dig coffee-slingers Downtown Credo for a lot of reasons (note: Bring back the Old Man and the Sea latte, yo!), but it was easy to single out this project on their community-oriented Conduit side for some extra love. Credo spearheaded a collaborative effort matching 20 local artists to 20 local parks and produced the resulting tribute posters (later also bound into a book) for sale. Half of the proceeds were donated to the Parks Department. The brilliant idea to use the bounty of local talent to spotlight our natural resources is reminiscent of the Works Project Administration of the 1930s, though the art is sui generis. Recommended for anyone who thinks Orlando not only doesn’t suck, it’s wonderful.

BEST “GET OFF MY LAWN!” Motion activated sprinklers at a house behind St. Matthew’s Tavern Look, we get it: Alcohol makes us have to pee too. But one neighbor of St. Matt’s got so fed up with patrons of that bar using their garden (which it looks like they’ve put a lot of work into) as a Porta Potty that they hooked motion sensors up to their sprinkler system. Now, the wee hours of the morning are frequently punctuated by the sudden shrieks of public urinators getting blasted with an unwelcome jet of city water. It’s a creative (and hilarious!) solution to an unsanitary nuisance, and has us thinking back to something our grandmother used to say every time we leave St. Matt’s: “Do you have to go before we get in the car?”

BEST LOCAL WEATHERMAN WHO LOVES LAMP Brooks Tomlin WOFL-35

We find it extremely difficult to believe that anyone is still “unconvinced” of the reality of climate change … much less a person who spends his days reporting extreme weather events. But believe it we must: Brooks Tomlin of local Fox affiliate WOFL calls himself a “climate deplorable” in his Twitter bio; in 2015, he posted on Facebook that “Earth’s climate will continue to change due to countless variables and processes which our best models cannot capture and some of our leaders, rushing into climate talks and agreements, cannot understand.” Yeah … no. Then we tumbled to it – this has to be a long-running performance art joke, right? The name is the giveaway. Only someone as, um, simple as Steve Carell’s “Brick Tamland” character from Anchorman would spout this stuff. We love lamp too, Brick, er, Brooks. LOUD NOISES!

BEST CAMERA WORK OPD Cameraman Who Filmed the Arrest of Markeith Loyd Orlando Weekly caught a lot of shit from you people after publishing a blog titled “We need to talk about Markeith Loyd’s face” (Jan. 18). Loyd – accused murderer of his pregnant ex-girlfriend, Sade Dixon, and OPD Lt. Deborah Clayton, and also implicated in the death of Orange County Deputy Norman Lewis – was arrested on Jan. 17 and was brought in for booking with serious injuries, including being blinded in one eye. When we questioned the account of Loyd’s purported resisting of arrest, since one officer claimed he gave up “like a little girl,” many of our readers expressed outrage, apparently incapable of understanding that calling out cops for using excessive force is not the same thing as defending the actions of a murderer. But then OPD released aerial footage of Loyd’s arrest, showing him throwing down his weapons and literally crawling across a lawn at the direction of police. The OPD employee operating the camera, however, panned away from the arrest just as officers started punting Loyd in the head. It was a bold cinematographic choice, to be sure, but one that reeks of rank amateurism when it comes to covering up unsavory behavior by law enforcement. 26

BEST HOME DECOR Hello Happy Plants hellohappyplants.com

Anyone trying to turn a side hustle into a full-time job will find hope in Kelsey Ryder’s hard work. She started off hawking plants in thrift store pots, but her online store, Hello Happy Plants, has blossomed into a full-grown business where she sells a variety of handcrafted planters (air plants included) in the colorful, cheeky shape of troll dolls, beer and soda cans, chip bags, cigarette boxes and much, much more. She ships to customers and wholesalers all over the world, in big part due to the following she’s gained on her playful Instagram page.

The cool terrazzo floor … the warm wood seating … the poured-concrete tables … the clean-lined garments in natural fibers: This place is heaven for minimalists who eschew frou-frou and loudness. The shop-slash-café offers handmade tableware, clogs from Brooklyn, natural skincare, fragrance, jewelry and a tightly edited rack of clothing for men and women, as well as iced lattes, cold brew, and delicious pastries, toasts and salads – and most of all, a calming start to the day.

BEST MASSAGE THERAPY/BODYWORK

A welcome addition to our currently flourishing atmosphere of makers and designers is the A-Shop, which features internetfabulous fashions for those who aren’t afraid to make a statement. Vanessa Barros Andrade (aka DJ Deviant Art Heaux, aka Puffy Pain) hand-selects designers from L.A. to Hong Kong and curates a physical space where Orlando can interact with clothing usually only accessible online. The hours are very limited and still evolving and the space is very niche, but you might catch an impromptu DJ set or drag performance as you browse the one-of-a-kind wares.

READERS POLL BEST NAIL SALON (MANICURE/PEDICURE)

BEST G’S Galactic G Skateshop 2020 N. Orange Ave. 407-895-0410 galacticg.com

Keeping the flame alive: For 20 years, the shop has been introducing Orlando kids to the sport, and for that alone the owner deserves props. We wonder how many grown-ups got their first deck there, or signed up for their first class, or posted their first trick video clip … it’s gotta be thousands. Plus, it’s the quickest place to grab a new pair of Vans and bypass mall madness.

BEST NEW DRUG DEALER Knox Dispensary 1901 N. Orange Ave. 407-233-0644 knoxmedical.com

We kid, we kid. Though still somewhat hamstrung by a web of legislative indecision regarding exactly what they can sell, the first legal medical marijuana dispensary just opened in the Ivanhood after much anticipation. Housed in an stark, bunker-esque storefront, once you get past the heavy (yet dapper) security, you’re inside a clean, minimalist wonderland that’s halfway between IKEA and an art film. Here’s hoping the Florida Legislature decides to get with the times and implement the will of the people soon (full THC!).

BEST HOLIDAY MARKET Pop-Up Tent Market at Redlight Redlight 2810 Corrine Drive December

Head straight to the bar as soon as you walk in and grab a beer to fortify yourself as you stroll around the brewpub and the storage area in back; alcohol will grease your credit card for the impending retail romp. Find 25-plus artisans selling upcycled, homemade and rare gifts. Beer + shopping = holiday cheer.

BEST DIRTY JOKES Fairvilla Megastore sign 1740 N. Orange Blossom Trail 407-425-6005 fairvilla.com

The drive down OBT heading toward Apopka is boring and mundane, with little to see except for railroad tracks on one side and small warehouses surrounded by patchy grass on the other. But popping up among the humdrum is a sign that might make you whip your car around to read it again. The exterior of Fairvilla Megastore is pretty low-key unless you count the giant sign in front that often boasts sayings like “We would love to show you our rack – just ask us,” “National Masturbation Month – don’t forget to celebrate” or “Our rabbits will take you to a different wonderland.” Fairvilla’s allusions are more sexy snark than heavy innuendo, but either way, it’s a nice way to break the tension with the cashier when you make your risqué purchases. 44

BEST KNOTTY BY NATURE Find Your Fiber findyourfiber.com

Sara Taylor’s Find Your Fiber website offers pre-made macrame pieces, DIY kits and a schedule of monthly local workshops for those curious about string theory. But it’s also got a healthy helping of you-go-girl attitude leavened with just enough vulnerability to not come across as annoying – much like her teaching persona in those workshops. Go on and gift yourself a few hours of using your fingers for something other than typing. You may find it soothes your heart as much as your brain.

BEST PLACE TO SWAP OUT YOUR CLOSET Avalon Exchange 745 N. Orange Ave., Winter Park 407-636-9304 avalonexchange.com

Most burgeoning cities have a lot of great options when it comes to fashion resale. So it’s a good sign that Avalon Exchange, originally from Ohio, has opened their fifth location in the heart of Winter Park – now you can sell your threads to an audience that appreciates not only your eccentric style but also your thoughtful sustainability. They’ll give you cash on-site, but chances are you won’t make it out the door with it once you peek around at their incredible selection, so opt for the store credit. There’s plenty of Supreme and Yeezy for your favorite hypebeast but also designer and professional gear for your friend with an actual job. Follow on Instagram if you’re looking to secure Lululemon or American Apparel (RIP) before it hits the floor; that shit goes fast. orlandoweekly.com

BEST BOUNCEBACK FROM THE ARTEGON AFTERMATH

BEST PLACE TO BUY VINTAGE GIRLY MAGS

Gods & Monsters 5421 International Drive 407-270-6273 godmonsters.com

The abrupt closure of Artegon early this year was disastrous for many of the mall’s artisan tenants, but collectibles superstore Gods & Monsters managed to not only survive, but thrive. Their new location at I-Drive’s Orlando Crossings Mall is no longer among the nation’s largest comic shops, but it is big enough to conceal Vault 5421, a Falloutinspired post-apocalyptic watering hole where (with apologies to the Kinks) you drink craft beer and it tastes just like Nuka-Cola.

Echoes of Retro 619 Virginia Drive 407-505-9827 facebook.com/echoesofretro

Previously a tenant at the Lovely Boutique, the vintage decor treasure trove now has its own storefront full of mid-century furniture, knickknacks, apparel and, yes, stacks of Playboy mags from the 1950s and ’60s. Forget this century’s camgirls and internet starlets – some of us would rather ogle an in-the-buff Barbi Benton instead.

BEST SLICE THAT DOESN’T EXIST (YET) The Lazy La Zi Mashup Lazy Moon, 1011 E. Colonial Drive, lazymoonpizza.com Chuan Lu Garden, 1101 E. Colonial Drive, chuanlugarden.com

It seems like a no-brainer. The Mills 50 outpost of venerated UCF pizzeria Lazy Moon opened up on East Colonial late last year, less than a block away from the city’s best Sichuan Chinese restaurant, Chuan Lu Garden. And one of Chuan Lu Garden’s most addictive dishes, fried pieces of chicken tossed with chili oil, Sichuan peppercorns, dry chilis and other spices, is the La Zi Chicken. La Zi. Lazy. The combination practically writes itself. The hypothetical slice hasn’t appeared on the Lazy Moon menu yet, but we’re holding out hope. In the meantime, DIY diners have to order the chicken to go, then walk over to Lazy Moon to get a cheese slice, and then surreptitiously combine the two in secret. It’s no way to live. 52

What you can’t count on: ever getting the same thing twice. The Daily BS is created by Valkyrie’s team of temperamental geniuses – it might be a “Johnny Cash” with strawberry, coffee, coconut and Oreos; or it might be a “Caffeinated Girl Scout” with matcha, coffee, Thin Mint and caramel. You pays your money and you takes your chances. (Or, you check Instagram early in the day for a hint.)

BEST CROISSANT Buttermilk Bakery 1198 N. Orange Ave., Winter Park 321-422-4015 buttermilk-bakery.com

Whether you’ve got a full set of sweet teeth or you’re a salt-andbutter fiend to the end, skipping a trip to Buttermilk Bakery would be a big mistake. We love the bright, juicy pop-tarts and the dense, insanely rich brownies, but their croissants – the true test of a baker – are the pastries that really stand out. They’re shatteringly crisp and meltingly buttery, filled with sweet almond paste or rich chocolate on the sweet side, or sophisticated savory combos like smoked cheddar and charred jalapeño or mushroom and Gruyére.

BEST ALWAYS-86ED MENU ITEM Garlic knots Pizza Bruno 3990 Curry Ford Road pizzabrunofl.com

Honestly, if you get to Pizza Bruno after 7:30 p.m. on most weeknights, you’re going to miss the boat on these oily, garlicky, pillowy pods of glutenous goodness. We’d estimate there are about six total cloves of garlic sending up their savory steam from every order of knots, which means the tables around you who missed out will probably slyly steal a few whiffs. orlandoweekly.com

BEST PUERTO RICAN COMFORT FOOD Mofongo pionono Melao Bakery 2001 Consulate Drive 407-348-1777 melaobakery.com

Let’s start by acknowledging that traditional mofongo is already fantastic. Puerto Ricans hit the jackpot when they decided to mix fried mashed green plantains with olive oil, garlic and pork cracklings. But Melao Bakery takes it to a different plane of gastronomical existence with its mofongo pionono. This dish has the basic elements of mofongo, but adds sweet plantains, ground beef and melted cheese on top for a truly soul-replenishing experience. Wash it down with a cold Malta India and one of Melao’s delicious quesitos. 70

BEST LOCAL SUCKER White Male Tears lollipop Big Tim’s Fancy AF Lollipops bigtimsellssuckers.com

Anyone who’s ever gotten stuck in a Facebook argument about Ghostbusters or Doctor Who knows that there’s a vocal minority of whiny guys out there who can’t handle any sort of change to the genders of fictional characters. They’re the same sort of snowflakes who preface sentences with “I’m not racist, but …” or wonder why there’s no such thing as a Straight Pride parade. Thankfully, local craft candy company Big Tim’s Fancy AF Lollipops has just the flavor to savor while reading idiotic diatribes from fragile dudes in need of a safe space. Their “White Male Tears” lollipop – actually a delicious blend of salted almond and a hint of vanilla – has a patina of salt on one side for just the right balance of sweet schadenfreude with lachrymose lamentation.

We were already obsessed with Krungthep’s delectable sandwiches and eye-popping desserts when we saw their rainbow-colored teas make a debut on Instagram. The honey lemon anchan tea is a slightly sweet tea with hints of lemon zest and vanilla bathed in deep azures, lavenders and violets that ultimately lead to a golden finale. And the best part of this Technicolor drink is that it’s all natural – no added colors, just some good tea craftsmanship. Get outta here with that Unicorn Frappucino. 78

BEST PLACE TO EAT INVERTEBRATES Joyful Garden 5210 W. Colonial Drive 407-270-8813

With seafood selections like jellyfish, geoduck, conch, snails, razor clams, live baby abalone and cuttlefish alongside your average squid, octopus, shrimp and crab, new West Colonial Chinese restaurant Joyful Garden is without a doubt the place to go for quivering, spineless, delicious marine life. (If you’re OK with spines, there’s plenty of frogs, eels, goosefish and croaker to keep you busy.) Even if you’re not an adventurous eater, there are plenty of lesschallenging dishes here that are way out of the ordinary – like rabbit noodle soup or clams stir-fried with Chinese zucchini.

BEST AND ONLY REASON TO LOOK AT GUY FIERI’S FROSTED TIPS Orlando “Wonder Women” on Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives We generally keep our distance from anything that whiffs of Donkey Sauce, but we had to bite the bullet and sit down for the “Wonder Women” episode of Guy Fieri’s Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives. The flame-shirted one made stops at Se7enbites and the Meatball Stoppe, trading quips and recipe tips with Se7enbites’ Trina Gregory-Propst and the Meatball Stoppe’s Isabella Di Vicari. It was worth it knowing we can enjoy Di Vicari’s meatballs with polenta or Gregory-Propst’s chicken pot pie and Moon Pie any time we like, unlike the poor slavering Food Network viewers across the nation who could only lick their screens – or book plane tickets. orlandoweekly.com

BEST BAR TO BUG OUT IN Reyes Mezcaleria 821 N. Orange Ave. 407-868-9007 reyesmex.com

Reyes Mezcaleria in the North Quarter has already become a fave destination for those searching for authentic flavors of Mexican cuisine, but the resto/bar is generating, ahem, buzz, for a polarizing Oaxacan delicacy it offers – chapulines. These small grasshoppers, fried and sprinkled with garlic, lime, salt and chilies, make for a bueno bar snack akin to pretzels, potato chips or nuts. They’ve got a nice crunch, an earthy bite, and they pair nicely with mezcal’s smoky notes. Order a flight of the distilled potable and you’ll get a complimentary bowl of the wee buggers; otherwise it’ll cost you $4. If you’re not convinced, the health and nutritional benefits of high-protein, sustainable chapulines likely won’t convince you either, but if you’re the least bit curious, this snack will, literally, give you wings.

There are many players in the high-stakes world of omakase, and we’re pleased as pufferfish that A-rated sushi bonanzas can be had at so many places around town. But, with a tip of the chef’s cap to Morimoto Asia, Sushi Pop, Jimotti, Seito, Dragonfly, Shari and Hanamizuki, our choice for the finest “chef’s choice” experience in all Orlandoland goes to Kabooki Sushi. Chef Henry Moso is a freakin’ creative dynamo who spares no expense in procuring the finest seafood from around the world to style and profile for his loyal followers at Kabooki.

BEST SITCOM-STYLE HANGOUT Achilles Art Cafe 2869 Wilshire Drive 407-704-7860 achillesartcafe.com

Achilles Art Cafe is probably the best-kept secret of the Metrowest neighborhood. Secluded between medical offices, this coffee shop feels like a ’90s hangout straight out of Friends. The great food, comfy couches, art, board games, random books, popping playlist and hookah are all part of the atmosphere created by the cafe’s grumpy yet lovable owner, Achilles. Known affectionately to all as Ash, Achilles run his business like a tight ship with “Coffeeshop Commandments” written on a small chalkboard. “Be nice. Be polite. Entitlement doesn’t fly,” is one rule, right under “If you need to nap or cuddle, go home.” Don’t bring in outside food, and don’t think you can come here just to use the free WiFi without purchasing anything because Ash will kick you out and you won’t get pity glances from the other patrons. Familiarize yourself with these common-sense manners and Achilles Art Cafe can be a home for you, too.

BEST PERFORMANCE ART AS GROUP CATHARSIS BEST YOUNG ARTIST PUTTING ORLANDO ON THE MAP

Wanda Raimundi-Ortiz’s Pietà

Dana Hargrove

Back in March, UCF professor Wanda Raimundi-Ortiz stopped time and carved out a space to collectively mourn the ongoing loss of young people of color to bias crimes with her 90-minute endurance performance Pietà. Reflecting the maternal gesture of the work’s sculptural namesake, Raimundi-Ortiz cradled 33 volunteer participants with infectious tenderness and vulnerability as DJ Stereo 77 queued quintessential R&B, Afrobeat, jazz and soul truncated by the sounds of sirens. Pews in the Knowles Memorial Chapel were filled with witnesses to the raw pain of grief and to the artist’s resilience. Our hearts are full knowing that she went on to perform Pietà at the National Portrait Gallery just two months later.

danahargrove.com

Dana Hargrove’s Scottish roots transplanted quickly to Central Florida, but she still says “Orlgh-lannndo” with a delightful Edinburgh burr. Exhibiting around the country and recently back from an artist’s residency in Iceland, Hargrove’s crisply colored cairns were selected for this year’s Florida Prize in Contemporary Art show at the Orlando Museum of Art. Ancient Scottish rockpiles inspire Hargrove’s contemporary notions of urbanity, social ties and globalism, and that’s not just clarty blether, laddie.

BEST NEW THEATER COMPANY Theater on the Edge 5542 Hansel Ave. 407-334-1843 theaterontheedge.org

Central Florida has a surfeit of stages where you can see singing princesses, but if you want drama with a bit more bite, Theater on the Edge is quickly becoming Orlando’s best bet. BEST NEW PUBLIC ART BEST ART HAIR Flora Maria Garcia CEO, United Arts of Central Florida unitedarts.cc

Just looking at her accomplishments, you might expect the head of United Arts, who’s been in the job for five years now, to be a buttoneddown bore. After all, she’s head of an organization that helps raise and divvies up $4.4 million to more than 70 local arts organizations each – that’s some serious math. But you’d be dead wrong. Born in Havana, Garcia favors dresses in bright colors and patterns, statement jewelry, and sports a nifty blonde streak in her curly mane. Subverting the maxim, she’s all party in the front, but it’s all business behind that forehead.

WestArt District 1011 W. Central Blvd. westartdistrict.com

Layered with paint ranging from graffiti tags to huge, intensely colored murals, West Central Boulevard’s collection of warehouses a block from Orlando City Stadium is where you’ll find the WestArt District – just look for local artist Lemus’ iconic portrait of Damian Marley. Hosting tailgate parties, a kids’ sports camp, a garden and painting lessons, the space is already integral to its Parramore community, and it’s still evolving thanks to promoter Harrison Rai. Miami’s warehouse district, Wynwood, became that town’s art zone a few years ago, and we think the WestArt District might be the seed of a similar hotspot here. PHOTO BY CHRIS TOBAR RODRIGUEZ

BEST UPSTAGING OF A CELEBRITY IN HIS OWN THEME PARK ATTRACTION Ragtime Gals at Universal’s Race Through New York Starring Jimmy Fallon ride 6000 Universal Blvd. 407-363-8000 universalorlando.com

As much fun as Universal Orlando can be, their parks’ overreliance on 3-D screens can be fatiguing, which makes the a cappella pre-show entertainment before Jimmy Fallon’s new ride especially refreshing. The Ragtime Gals perform barbershop-style renditions of pop and R&B hits that are so tunefully witty, you’ll want to skip the so-so simulator entirely and stick around instead for another set of this quintet’s clever covers.

BEST “MAY I SWOOP” Dracula Orlando Ballet October 28-30, 2016

For a few days around Halloween, the Walt Disney Theater at the Dr. Phillips Center for the Performing Arts was all about the season, hosting Orlando Ballet’s over-the-top production of Dracula, as reimagined by choreographer Michael Pink with a gonzoid assist from Ken Russell. Anyone who assumed that the ballet medium would be too ethereal for the gory pulp noir of Bram Stoker got a stake driven through the heart of their preconceptions. The sets were spectacularly dank and gothic, the costumes were amazing, and the body movement was lithe and fluid, suited to the twilit dreamscape of the Dracula legend. The physicality of Daniel Benavides as Dracula was unbelievable – tossing around adversaries like puppets, creeping feral along the stage, seemingly dissolving into mist or shadow, seducing his victims. No tricks, all treat.

RENEE FALCONETTI AS JOAN OF ARC

BEST CRYING IN A THEATER, PART 1 Voices of Light: The Passion of Joan of Arc Nov. 18-19, 2016 Knowles Memorial Chapel bachfestivalflorida.org

Last November brought a once-in-a-lifetime live communal experience when composer Richard Einhorn supervised a live choral/orchestra rendition of his heart-rending score to Carl Dreyer’s silent film classic. In the Knowles chapel’s grandiosely gothic environs, massed voices and orchestral instrumentation accompanied impressionistic visuals. Lighting was minimal, but the atmosphere was breathtaking – and despite Einhorn’s sweeping hymnal melancholy, it was the soul-grinding pain in the eyes of Renee Falconetti as Joan that hit the hardest. Sweetest hurt.

BEST CRYING IN A THEATER, PART 2 One More Time With Feeling Sept. 19, 2016 Enzian Theater enzian.org

Music Mondays, which Enzian Theater produces in partnership with Park Ave CDs, are an encouragement to resist the urge to simply watch music docs on (insert media platform of choice). In September, a near-capacity crowd packed into the Enzian on a Monday night to catch the second Nick Cave doc (a sequel of sorts to 20,000 Days on Earth), full well knowing that they were going to get raked over the coals emotionally. And did it ever come down heavy. Ostensibly a doc about the making of the Bad Seeds’ latest album, Skeleton Tree, the film quickly became something very raw as Cave was a man emotionally gutted, trying to process the recent, shocking death of his young son. Seeing the normally debonair Cave with the wind knocked out of him was shocking; seeing his family and bandmates rally around him was heart-rending; paired with Skeleton Tree’s haunting ballads, it was all almost too much. At the end of the film, everyone filed out quietly, shellshocked. orlandoweekly.com

Posing Beauty Snap! Space and Snap! Downtown, snaporlando.com

Museum life in Orlando began 2017 with an unparalleled triple whammy against the status quo, inspiring a reappraisal of the white gaze and a centering of blackness. The historic documentation of Cornell Fine Arts Museum’s The Black Figure in the European Imaginary, installed side-by-side with the modern and futuristic AfroFantastic: Black Imagination and Agency in the American Experience, as well as Snap! Orlando’s trove of portraits Posing Beauty in African American Culture, drew a representational beeline from the lens of white perception to empowerment through self-portrayal, then fantastically on to magical ideals entirely independent of whiteness. BEST CHANCE TO SEE A NATIONAL TREASURE Beautiful Mysterious: The Extraordinary Gaze of William Eggleston through Sept. 3, 2017 Mennello Museum of American Art 900 E. Princeton St. 407-246-4278 mennellomuseum.org

In June, the Mennello Museum of American Art opened a show of work by William Eggleston, America’s most famous color photographer and widely acknowledged as a national treasure. Not only was it a thrill to see Eggleston’s intense, hallucinatory prints in the flesh (so to speak), it was also gratifying to see the Mennello making moves toward significant contemporary art made by living artists. City-funded facilities, not under the same immediate impetus private galleries are to earn money by selling, should always take some risks. Showing challenging work instead of art that matches the sofa fulfills that mandate to expand visitors’ visual tastes and inspire future artists; we can only hope for more to come.

BEST NEW ART SPACE McRae Art Studios 1000 Arlington St. 407-601-5152 mcraeartstudios.com

The art scene’s constant mobility means don’t get too comfy in your studio, or some developer’s gonna buy the block and kick you out. Only old-timers will remember when the McRae studios were actually on McRae Street; after an 18-year stint in Winter Park, this independent collective recently returned to its roots in Orlando and now they’re on Arlington Street. Industrial-sized garage doors filter light into both sides of a concrete-floored central gallery space, serenely displaying examples of the 23 artists’ work. Airy artist studios and gathering spaces flow through this former auto body shop near the corner of Westmoreland and Colonial. From Snap! to FAVO to McRae to the WestArt District, we have a little art vortex curling around downtown in the making. 110

Johannah O’Donnell doesn’t show in Orlando often enough for our tastes anymore, having found a footing in the wider national market, but she’s still an active participant in the Orlando art world, participating in group shows here and there and showing up for her colleagues at openings. This canny interpretrix of cultural (pop and otherwise) icons – from Patti Smith to Lil Bub, Buffy the Vampire Slayer to Frida Kahlo, Prince to Princess Leia – combines meticulous brushwork and a brilliant color sense with a killer eye for nowness. She rocks our eyeballs, and we couldn’t be prouder to claim her as our own. ARTWORK BY JOHANNAH O’DONNELL

BEST ORLANDO TEAM YOU SHOULD BE WATCHING Orlando Pride orlandocitysc.com/pride

If you’ve been in Orlando long enough, you’ve probably seen Kaká more than a few times around town. The Orlando City Soccer Club bug seems to have hit everybody in the City Beautiful (you can tell by the purple paint left on faces after game day), but there’s another team in the city that’s working just as hard and doesn’t get enough props. The Orlando Pride women’s team has some of the best players in the league, including the Brazilian legend Marta Vieira da Silva and Alex Morgan, a star forward who also plays on the U.S. Women’s National Soccer Team. If you’re a soccer fan and you haven’t come out to see a game, there’s still time to redeem yourself – the 2017 season is not over.

BEST PLACE TO GOLF IN FLORIDA THAT DOESN’T FEEL LIKE FLORIDA Streamsong Resort 1000 Streamsong Drive, Bowling Green 888-294-6322 streamsongresort.com

If you haven’t been to the Streamsong, a stunning facility just south of Lakeland, put it at the top of your weekend getaway list. The organic lines, contours and materials of the resort’s architecture blend seamlessly into a landscape painted with peaks, valleys, rolling hills and 100-foot sand dunes. That same aesthetic extends to the clubhouse from whence golfers set out to tackle the resort’s Red course (designed by Ben Crenshaw and Bill Coore) and Blue course (designed by Tom Doak), both of which rank among the top five courses in Florida and top 25 courses in the country, according to Golf Digest. The rugged terrain offers a powerful backdrop for hackers and scratch golfers alike, though no matter your skill level, you’ll likely be saying, “I can’t believe I’m in Florida.” 120

BEST SIDESHOW Wrestlemania 33 April 2, 2017, in Orlando

While WWE’s main event over at Camping World Stadium drew a huge crowd to see the Undertaker’s final match – along with several hours of high-flying drama beforehand – the circus-like atmosphere of Wrestlemania extended all over Orlando for a week. Starting with the unveiling of a giant championship belt suspended from the flagpoles at the eastern edge of Lake Eola, wrestling mania took over Orlando with pop-up events at clubs, amateur wrestling nights, special ticketed Q&As with wrestling legends, podcast recordings – you name it. We’re just thankful that the folding metal chair manufacturers convention wasn’t in town at the same time, or else the city might have been taken to the mat permanently.

BEST BRAWL Orlando Solar Bears vs. Florida Everblades April 22, 2017

The Orlando Solar Bears defeated the Florida Everblades 3-0 in the fourth game of this year’s ECHL Kelly Cup playoffs, but more importantly, the team got into one hell of a hockey fight in the last minute of the game. “It’s a yard sale here at the Amway Center,” cried the commentator after Mitchell Heard started going at it with Mason Marchment in front of 8,000 fans at Amway Center. Though fights at hockey games aren’t uncommon, this particular punchfest encompassed everything you look for in hockey brawls – bare-fisted cheap shots, goalies dropping elbows, equipment strewn across the ice, and, of course, a portly kid playing air guitar in the stands. (Check the video.) Sadly, the series went to the Everblades, but we’ll always have this to remember. 126

He’s taught everywhere from Canada to Malaysia to Switzerland, and he’ll get you that much closer to channeling your inner Federer, Rafa or Serena. The resort’s Har-Tru clay courts go easy on your joints, but a follow-up 80-minute massage will have them feeling as limber as a teenage gymnast’s. Players are spoiled with heated memory-foam massage tables, inhalation bowls for relaxation, and cupping therapy to take care of that tennis elbow. More post-tennis pampering can be had in the serene solarium, or in the “Experience Shower” – a multisensory, light-and-sound ablutionary escape. Game, set and match. Downtown’s poshest newcomer this year is undoubtedly Mathers Social Gathering. Here, you can plop into an armchair with a craft cocktail in one hand while regaling your friends with stories of Orlando’s past – either real or made-up – while sitting underneath the oversized U.S. flag that once flew at Tinker Field – as long as you adhere to the dress code, of course. 136

When Burton’s Bar closed in February of this year, there was much wailing and gnashing of teeth as it seemed that Thornton Park’s cheapest and friendliest neighborhood bar was to be no more. But while we waited to find out what the developer vultures that circle the city would do to the beloved casual boozer, the owners of downtown staples the Lodge and the Woods were making moves to take over the space. And when they announced that they’d not only be taking over Burton’s but keeping it pretty much the same, Thorntonites rejoiced, comforted by the knowledge that they’d still be able to dig into a bucket of reasonably priced domestics while chilling on one of the best people-watching perches – Burton’s patio – indefinitely.

BEST CLUB SERIES Talk Yo Shit facebook.com/talkyoshitorlando

Where other recurring dance nights beat audiences over the head with themes and mission statements, Talk Yo Shit is just about making people move. Their crowd has steadily increased not via Facebook ads or endless fliering, but by word of mouth. Over the last two years, co-founders Fiona and Grape successfully parlayed their monthly hip-hop/R&B events at the Social into every Thursday night at the Patio’s Jungle Room, inviting fellow DJs B8TA and Yosh to join the mix. Most weekly events flop in the first few months, but TYS will go as long as its leaders want it to, and we hope that’s a long while.

BEST SECRET SHOW Ho99o9 June 9, 2017

Hip-hop firebrands Ho99o9 aren’t from here. But their manager, Mike Feinberg, is. And it’s his Promethean handiwork that brought one of the most internationally and intensely hyped underground bands right now to town in a happening that packed more intrigue, sensation and revelation than the city’s seen in years. Although the date was announced months in advance, the actual location of the secret rendezvous wasn’t revealed until the day of, and it was at a club that didn’t exist yet (and still doesn’t). The result was a winding nocturnal journey following cryptic signs through a parking lot, past a fence break, down a long walkway, up to a back entrance and into a buzzing crowd that erupted in hysteria when the rap-punk juggernaut hit the stage. It was all a reminder of the difference between a show and an event.

BEST NEW PROMOTERS Ugly Orange facebook.com/uglyorangepromo

In June 2016, Orlando music promoters Ugly Orange hosted their first event, a tour kickoff for Lakeland’s Swept with support from the Knick Knacks (RIP), Dumberbunnies and the Zigs. Even before its start, each of UO’s three heads – Nicole Dvorak, Hannah Fregger and Kaley Honeycutt – were already seasoned veterans in the Orlando music scene, booking shows and playing in local bands. They’ve quickly become a brand, boosting local and touring indie rock music, booking an average of two shows a month, and collaborating with fellow Orlando promoters Always Nothing, the Vinyl Warhol and SR50 Magazine. In a lane largely controlled by men, female-powered booking has taken the top spot. 140

Merchandise in-store at Park Ave CDs, David Vassalotti live session on WPRK and solo set for the In-Between Series

Joysticks spares no detail when it comes to re-creating the neon frenzy of the 1980s. Homages to Jaws, The Goonies and other nostalgia-heavy flicks abound, and there are more than enough arcade and console video games to go around (including couches with old Nintendos hooked up to TVs for adventurous nerds on dates). The drink menu matches the bar’s over-the-top theme with specialty cocktails using dry ice and colorful liqueurs to concoct science-project-esque beverages. The Hooters-y vibe of the waitress uniforms is a teensy bit off-putting, but the free Ms. Pac Man guarantees we’ll hit “Continue” here instead of ending the game.

Though Orlando didn’t snag a date on 4AD band and Florida underground stalwarts Merchandise’s 2016 tour, the City Beautiful hosted three even more unique Merch events. First, the band premiered their gorgeous Corpse Wired for Sound album at a free Park Ave CDs in-store performance, where the quartet got loose with improv’d versions of songs new and old. And then a few months later in January, founding member/guitarist David Vassalotti blew into town to record a live radio session at college station WPRK and then packed out the Gallery at Avalon Island for the most volcanic In-Between Series yet, a cathartic, improvised solo set built around raw guitar work and loops that was equal part unhinged and deeply, deeply vulnerable.

BEST NATIONAL RADIO APPEARANCE The Sh-Booms on NPR March 18, 2017

Orlando’s hottest young soul band, the Sh-Booms, did not win NPR Music’s big Tiny Desk Contest. But they stood out enough among over 6,000 entries to still command a feature, something NPR did for only a few of the most memorable contestants. Of course, we jam out to them from our car speakers all the time. But it was a big shot of local pride in the arm to hear them transmitted on the national airwaves as part of a legit story. See? We told you they were special.

BEST CROSSOVER Women in Song Series Orlando Philharmonic orlandophil.org

For all the good cultural work that the Orlando Philharmonic does, its demographic doesn’t exactly skew hip. Its Women in Song series this past season, however, went a good way toward shaking up that image. With a debut rollout that featured noteworthy and indie-certified artists like Nickel Creek’s Sara Watkins and Crooked Still’s Aoife O’Donovan, the events showed a side of the Phil that’s innovative, collaborative and forward-looking. We’re looking forward to the 2017-2018 series, which kicks off in October.

BEST NEW MUSIC FESTIVAL Florida Is Loud Fest Dec. 16-18, 2016

With a stampede of exceptional heavy bands like Holly Hunt, Yautja, Knife Hits and Nunhex, the lineup alone would’ve made this new entrant onto the festival landscape a lock. But the fact that such a deafening cavalry could be conjured from a focus on Florida talent shone a big spotlight on our deep well of talent. That a full-weekend, two-venue blowout (Will’s Pub and Uncle Lou’s) ballooned and coalesced from a pure DIY spirit is testament to the healthy state of the scene.

BEST “I’M NOT TRAPPED IN HERE WITH YOU, YOU’RE TRAPPED IN HERE WITH ME” Forced Into Femininity live show Feb. 13, 2017

When Chicago’s Jill Lloyd Flanagan casually confessed to horror movies being a major influence on her Forced Into Femininity project during an Orlando Weekly interview, we didn’t know how deeply that obsession cut until an eerily dispassionate disclaimer played before her set that all but warned the faint of heart to flee. And from that moment – it was on. Skittering noise blasted as Flanagan threw herself at the assembled throng, clad in a cocktail dress and a mask of crumbling flesh. Melding performance art confrontation with grindhouse aesthetics and emotional empathy, Flanagan’s set took place all over Spacebar and even outside, where she climbed up on the roof of the building to continue her performance. Beautiful, moving, terrifying, exhilarating, Forced Into Femininity reminded us that we are alive, why we liked music in the first place, and that there is belonging for all of us.

DVWEZ at Femme Hop April 28, 2017 facebook.com/dvwez

GB’s Bottle Shop and Tasting Bar

The carefully curated Always Nothing Femme Hop had already been a success with rousing sets from Tiger Fawn and TIME, but the final portion of the event moved outside and suddenly became downright celestial. DVWEZ (Gainesville-via-Orlando’s Delia Albert) took the stage flanked by a drummer, but it wasn’t just any stage. She played her set within a translucent cube of light more suited to Gary Numan at his most neo-futuristic, upon which a kaleidoscope of colors and images were projected and within which she sang and played guitar and synthesizer. Which, honestly, might be gimmicky if not for the stark sonic evidence that DVWEZ has pop smarts and an enigmatic, future-forward take on R&B and torch songs that puts her up there with the queen of all she surveys, Sade. DWVEZ creates cryptic, prismatic love songs that simmer and nod and soothe broken hearts – watching her produce pretty much goddamn every note of her set made us believers.

It’s a sister to the Gnarly Barley, Belle Isle’s laid-back, cabin-y gathering of the craft beer tribes, but the vibe is totally different. This is a clean, minimal temple to high-end brews, and the white subway-tiled tap wall, with its current offerings scrawled upon, is reminiscent of a third-wave coffee shop where the microroast of the day is advertised. Also playing to the coffee connection, you can order each of those beers in 5-ounce, 9-ounce or 1-pint pours (or 16- or 32-ounce growlers). Now that’s a Venti we can get behind.

BEST FASHION ICON/NOISE MAKER Jason Kimmins Fashion is the powerful form of expression that Jason Kimmins harnesses to explore new ideas about identity and self-presentation. This freedom to experiment is also prevalent in Kimmins’ musical output, ranging from the noisy and improvised Shania Pain with Andrea Knight to his new synthheavy solo project, J.A.S.O.N. On stage you might see him sporting a leather cowboy hat hanging from his neck, paired effortlessly with a long-sleeve mesh top and gloves. Not being afraid to try new looks can inspire others to take on that creative freedom, creating an energy that’s invigorating Orlando’s younger art, music and business scenemakers.

BEST BAR IN OUR OLD OFFICE Ace Cafe 100 W. Livingston St. 407-996-6686 acecafeusa.com

Located in the heart of downtown, the Ace is the first American outpost of the classic London biker haunt. And calling it a bar isn’t really fair — it’s a bar, restaurant, coffee stop, music venue, art gallery and motorcycle shop. The fact that this entertainment complex planted itself here, not on I-Drive, should tell you something about the Ace’s intentions; they want to be a part of the permanent community, not just shill for the transient tourist trade. And that’s not the only thing they have in common with Orlando Weekly – they’re also posted up in our old office building, meaning we get to sip cocktails in what was once our conference room. Sweet. Having just returned from the 2017 National Poetry Slam in Denver, Colorado, where they competed against some of the top slam poets in the country, the Safe Words Poetry Slam team is wasting no time in getting back to work. This week sees the team begin its 2017-18 season with a four-round poetry slam where four teams of poets perform their best pieces in rounds devoted to topics like sports and games or the age-old battle of sharks versus dolphins. Welcome back, poets! – Thaddeus McCollum

Sporting one of the longest careers in punk rock, Social Distortion is coming up on four decades of devotion to three chords and the truth. They scored a series of hits in the 1990s with singles “Story of My Life,” “I Was Wrong” and a punked-up cover of Johnny Cash’s “Ring of Fire.” And frontman Mike Ness – the only constant member of a frequently changing lineup – continues to write tunes that pay tribute to classic rock & roll, country and rockabilly. Opener Jade Jackson, a young songwriter whose debut album, Gilded, has garnered positive attention from the likes of Rolling Stone and NPR, might seem like an odd pairing until you learn that Ness produced her album. Time to break out that can of Royal Crown pomade that’s been gathering dust in your medicine cabinet. – TM

Bringing back together the multidisciplinary team responsible for last year’s Space Is the Place at A Place Gallery, this show finds illustrator Maressa Roberts (Em’s Revenge) and digital artist David J. Lajas, aka Catalyst, teaming up again. The two have been hard at work in the interim, with each presenting new works individually – an audio-interactive projection mapping display from Catalyst and new pop-culture refracting visual art from Em’s Revenge. Additionally the duo will debut two installation pieces they cooked up jointly. Along with sinister (but glam) house beats from DJ/style maven Deviant Art Heaux – whose A-Shop now occupies the former A Place space, if you’re a stickler for conceptual unity – the event promises full sensory overload. Repurpose pop fizz and high art and make it your own. – Matthew Moyer

Some dogs hop on three legs, or wear eyepatches like pirates, or can’t hear a damn thing you say but loyally lip-read your commands. Lovey Loaves is the Orlando sanctuary devoted to saving, rehabbing and helping find homes for animals who’ve had a tough time of it, but still have love to give. Arts for Carts is their annual fundraiser, and before you start thinking this is some drab do-gooder lentilfest, allow us to point out that this party looks like a blast. It’s a Roaring ’20s theme, so dress up and be prepared to do the Charleston – and to take your turn in the “slomo booth” for a gorgeous, unique video – plus the usual: hors d’oeuvres, cocktails, a live DJ and a silent auction of art and jewelry. It might be nice in the midst of this heavy political climate to have some fun and spend some money that you know is going to a good cause, mightn’t it? – Jessica Bryce Young

Between the dreamy dynamism of Kinder Than Wolves and the heartfelt crunch of Expert Timing, this was already a notable next-gen bill of Orlando indie rock. But once DieAlps! were added, it suddenly became a big deal. These darlings of the Tampa Bay scene have been steadily rising since emerging in 2014 on indie pillar New Granada Records. But while their introductory self-titled EP showed potential, their freshly released debut full-length album (Our City) officially makes them a band to watch. The excellent new record is the document of an extraordinary leap in progress, one that’s taken their waltzing pop charm and given it new rock wings and an open sky in which to fly. With twinkling melodies surfing big swells of guitar, the result is a realized expansion that delivers substance and sparkle in equally brilliant measure. Add in the good locals and the emo intricacy of South Florida’s Woolbright and this bill is a noteworthy sampler of Florida’s next indie class. – Bao Le-Huu

Young West Coast deathtrip freaks Death Valley Girls perfectly embody the various hues of Los Angeles’ weirdo heritage, be it the witchy menace of the Manson girls, the Runaways’ total trash, Iggy passed out on the Sunset Strip, the deathrock vileness of the Hell Comes to Your House comp or the pulpy seduction of Hollywood Babylon. Visual evidence bears this out too, with the band looking like a school folder collage of the Cramps and the Jesus and Mary Chain. But the proof is always in the sonic pudding and Death Valley Girls truly shine with their occult soundtracks (including a few albums for slack tastemakers Burger Records), an immediate brew of shoegaze, C86, the Brian Jonestown Massacre and a dash of the Gun Club. We’ve read a few intriguing things about the members sporting black cloaks onstage and writing “666” on their foreheads; is it for real? Who cares! See you at the séance. – MM

Other Body MUSIC

Young Miami skronk trio Other Body are part of a young vanguard of new bands from Miami – influenced by the noise weirdness coming out of the Churchill’s/Rat Bastard nexus – that are reinvigorating guitar music in South Florida along with Period Bomb, Teepee, Smut and Pariuh. Other Body deal in a molten, volcanic hybrid of post-rock and psychedelia where riffs and vocal melodies bend and warp under torque and tension from an unforgiving rhythm section. But like the best U.K. shoegaze, the tunes underneath are undeniable. The band are taking the songs from their recent Total Bust mini-album out for a road-test on a brief “Florida or Bust” tour, trading in the fetid heat of Miami for … well, more fetid heat, but still. With locals Junior Bruce, Uh, and Freakazoid on board, this bill is pretty much a précis on the state of new, weird Florida heaviness. – Matthew Moyer with Junior Bruce, Uh, Freakazoid | 8 p.m. | Will’s Pub, 1042 N. B Y D A N S AVA G E

A few years ago, my dad was busted by the cops for using an online forum to solicit escorts. The arrest and infidelity destroyed his marriage to my mom. My brother and I were in our mid-teens at the time and were angry enough with him that we asked him to not seek custody. He obliged, and neither of us has seen him since. I miss my dad – or the man I thought he was. I know part of my anger comes from how badly he hurt my mom. As I mature, I’m wondering if I was unfair to my dad by cutting off all contact. I don’t think sex work is immoral. I don’t think people who see sex workers are bad. But because my dad was involved in this bust, and because I had to become aware of the double life he led, I felt uncomfortable around him. It doesn’t help that some of the girls were not much older than I was at the time. I think I’d like to get to know my dad again, but I’m not sure what kind of relationship I’m ready to have. He was a wonderful father – and on some level, I recognize I cut him off when he showed me he was human. How do I reach out to him? Please Help Each of us is a writhing mass of contradictions, PH. We all have public personas and private personas, and there are always gaps between the two. And while those gaps, when exposed, can be mutually negating, that’s not always the case. It is possible for someone to be a good dad and a shitty husband. The good dad you knew your dad to be? That wasn’t a lie. It was one of your father’s truths. That he failed as a husband and hurt your mom – with an assist from laws criminalizing sex work – is another of your father’s truths. You don’t say why your dad was seeking sex outside the marriage, PH, and I can’t imagine that was a conversation you wanted to have with your dad in your mid-teens – and it may not be one you ever want to have. But it’s possible your parents’ marriage was more complicated than you know. (“The victim of an affair is not always the victim of the marriage,” as Esther Perel says.) But you’re not an awful daughter for refusing to see your dad during a contentious, confusing and most likely humiliating time. (I imagine there was press). As for how to reach out, I think e-mail is the best way to re-establish contact after an estrangement. You can take your time crafting what you want to say, and your dad can take his time crafting a response. And you’ve already written a good opening line for your first e-mail to your dad: “I’d like to get to know my dad again, but I’m not sure what kind of relationship I’m ready to have. But I’d like to start talking – via e-mail, for now.” Give your mother a heads-up, PH, so she doesn’t feel blindsided. Good luck.

I’m a female masochist and super subby – I see nothing wrong with that. For the last couple of months, I’ve been pursuing “death wish” fantasies. When I start feeling low, I seek out guys on hookup sites who are sadistic enough that they might potentially help me carry it out. I’ve even gone so far as to put together a “blackmail package” for them, in case they start feeling like I might tell on them. I honestly wouldn’t want anyone to get in trouble just because I’m not thinking right. My therapist knows about the masochist end of things, but I’m afraid to tell her this other part because I don’t want to be put on any crazy pills. Is there a way for me to switch my brain from thinking about this and somehow find my way back to normal BDSM or something else entirely without turning off my sexuality completely? Rather Not Say My Name

“DON’T FUCK NAZIS”

confused and frankly not-too-bright person who’s surrounded by bad influences. I want to be understanding and gently guide him in a better direction, but sometimes his ignorance is aggravating. I can also sense that he’s beginning to feel a little judged, which can only make things worse. I keep thinking of your Campsite Rule, and I wonder at what point does one give up throwing logic and articles at someone who thought Hillary Clinton ran a child sex ring out of a pizza parlor? Can I continue to have sex with someone who thinks the left is conspiring to turn everyone communist? Conflicted Lover

Don’t fuck Nazis. If someone you just met tells you they’re a Nazi, don’t fuck that Nazi. If you’re already fucking someone and they reveal themselves to be a Nazi, stop fucking that Nazi. If someone tells you they’re a Nazi and you fuck There are fantasies that are simply too dan- that Nazi anyway and keep fucking that Nazi gerous to realize, RNSMN, even with a willing because they’re good at sex (for a Nazi), your victim/sub and a reckless perp/Dom. OK, OK: This guy might not be a Nazi territory deserves whatever trouble comes their way. Murder is wrong, even if the at all – although it sure as fuck sounds like person wants it. And taking advantage of his family is, and they probably have more someone who clearly isn’t in their right mind influence over him than you do. It’s possible this young, confused and not-too-bright boy doesn’t magically make manslaughter not is merely a Trump-supporting conspiracy criminal – “blackmail package” or no “blacktheorist and maybe I’m still too upset about mail package.” Charlottesville to be impartial. Or, hey, maybe You must open up to your therapist about this guy is already a Nazi and hasn’t revealed the risks you’re taking, RNSMN. He’s a Trump guy, but hesitates to admit it because he knows I’m anti-Trump. He shares memes created by Mike Cernovich and Milo Yiannopoulos, he gets his news from hard-right publications, and his sister and brother-in-law are Holocaust deniers. This concerns and confuses me because he’s such a sweet guy and, honestly, so goddamn good in bed. He might be the best lay I’ve ever had. I can’t reconcile these two sides of him, but I also can’t help trying to enlighten him a little bit. One of his best features is his open-mindedness.
