f the past 12 months taught us anything, it’s how much we all literally depend on each other. Mutual aid. Mutual respect. Mutual survival. It was always true, but there’s nothing like a massively contagious respiratory disease to make it painfully obvious — the mask on your face is the heart on your sleeve, and it’s up to each of us to do as much as we are individually able to protect our fellow humans. Both in the City Beautiful and beyond. So it was brought home to us how rich Orlando is in champions. Our readers show so much love for this city — this contest got more than 550,000 individual votes in all, more than ever before, each vote celebrating the accomplishments, innovations and successes of fellow Orlandoans. And we realized how much we love and depend on the champions in our community, those who are every bit as devoted as we are to finding and spotlighting the very Best of Orlando. So we asked them to help us out in these pages. Like miners, they unearth the jewels of the city and bring them to the surface for everyone to see — whether it’s a restaurant you adore or a painter who challenges your senses, a song you can’t get out of your head, or the bubbliest yet most bad-ass roller skater you ever did see. hen the good people of this city ask me about restaurants I like to frequent, my response invariably boils down to moods. That’s right, moods. Mine happen to be a fickle and incalculable bunch, but they hold sway over my gut and are the primary influencers on my appetite. So when a particular mood strikes, these restaurants never let me down. Here are my picks for Orlando’s best.

• When I’m in a wacky mood, I know I can get a

zany dish (doughnuts topped with duck confit) with a zany name (“For Faiyaz”) at Orlando Meats. Sometimes, I want to enjoy a high-end •omakase while feeling a complete disconnect

with everyone else around me and not give a shit. The busty partygoers and DSquared2 set at Kabooki Sushi give me just that.

aiyaz Kara has served as Orlando Weekly’s restaurant critic since June 2006. He’s one of the last to stay incognito (or at least he tries to), reflecting our mission of giving readers reviews that closely reflect the experience they might have, as opposed to a recognizable “foodie” celebrity. That said, no average reader could take in the amount of red meat, foie gras, croissants and cream cheese mousse that he does on a weekly basis. When he’s not eating for us, he’s eating in Miami for Eater.com, recording his Canada-centric “Bag of Milk” podcast, or playing hockey or tennis to work it all off.

Then there are times where I miss being in my favorite food city in the world, but after a platter of kebabs at Cafe 34 Istanbul, followed by a few shots of raki and a toke from the hookah, I feel like I’m right back in Galata. It’s open 24 hours, too. Best burger? I get asked this one a lot. My •favorite burger in the city is the heavily spiced chapli kebab burger at Charcoal Zyka. It’s crackled with pomegranate seeds and slathered in their “inferno” sauce. When I want my favorite no-fuss burger, I head to Kappy’s Subs in Maitland for their quarter-pound cheeseburger. They’ve been around since the Leafs last won the Stanley Cup (1967), so they’re doing something right. That said, I’ll often crave a burger from West •Coast institution In-N-Out, and the all-vegan version at Winter Park Biscuit Co. comes pretty damn close — burger diaper and all.

• When I’m mooding for beef on the opposite

end of the cost spectrum, I lose myself in the $70,000 meat humidor at Knife & Spoon. Well, not literally, but I can stare at those dry-aged wonders until the cows come home (the 500-day aged steak on the top shelf in particular). Eating one these hefty, funk-filled slabs is an indulgence at its absolute beefiest. But there are times that call for simple •pleasures, and the noodly bowls of tonkotsu at

Ramen Takagi offer just that in a simple and serene setting. donburi (rice bowls), no one does it better •thanForTakanao and Yasue Nakashima at Sushi Kichi. am I not in the mood for cheese mousse •teaRarely or matcha, and Matcha Cafe Maiko’s cheese matcha latte gives me both in a cup. The mood for pho strikes about as often as •lightning in the summer and, when it does, I head straight for Z Asian Vietnamese Kitchen for a hearty bowl. Granted, sometimes I’ll forgo the beef noodle soup in favor of fermented anchovybased seafood soup or marinated duck noodle soup. there are times when I want to lovingly •giveThen my GI tract the finger by diving into a hellish plate of Mee Thai’s waterfall beef salad bathed in an electrified juice spiked with Thai red-hots. For a general Thai and Laotian hankering, •Dali’s in Sanford is so worth the drive. I’m almost always in the mood for Indian •food, and for pani puri and other street snacks, Bombay Street Kitchen is the best. For high-end sophistication, Tabla Orlando and Tabla Winter Park never let me down.

For jamón Ibérico and all my Spanish cravings, Jaleo at Disney Springs gets the nod.

•

For tajines and couscous, Moroccan Breeze more than gratifies. If you’re wondering what takeout joint •I frequent the most? It’s Shiraz Market in Longwood. For pastries and baked goods, I love •Bread & Co. There are times to connect with Orlando’s •past, however painful, and Nikki’s Place plates a ladleful of history with its meat-and-threes. After enduring more than 70 years of systematic segregation, neighborhood razings and interstate incursions, its brand of Southern cuisine has remained true to the words embossed on the restaurant’s marquee — “the way it used to be.”

Best New Carbs: Deli Desires

ost of Orlando learned what a bialy is last year, when Hannah Jaffe and Nathan Sloan schooled us deliciously. This non-boiled, malt-free cousin of the bagel has a dimple, not a hole, and Jaffe and Sloan fill theirs with either caramelized onions or a smoked jalapeño-and-Muenster mix. They also deal in — and we do mean deal; this stuff is borderline addictive — an unkosher and undaunted menu of labneh and gravlax, latkes and scrapple, challah and gribiche-style egg salad, all of it embellished with lashings of Manischewitz-shallot butter and Duke’s mayo. (And that’s just the regular menu — specials tend toward the baroque, like a matzo brei tortilla española or a Campari-grapefruit chess pie.) This fearless mix of Jewish deli, Southern comfort, and L.A. edgy makes sense when you dig into the pair’s past: Jaffe cooked with Sqirl’s Jessica Koslow and Top Chef Michael Voltaggio, while Sloan worked with Beard Award winners Jon Shook and Vinny Dotolo at their Los Angeles seafood joint, Son of a Gun. Despite those West Coast pedigrees, Jaffe and Sloan met at the Hideaway Bar and got married at Redlight Redlight, which is, just about the most Orlando thing ever. And now their food is too, and we’re delighted to eat it all up.

Best Pizza: Lazy Moon

hey say you can only have two of the three attributes everyone wants, and Lazy Moon is the exception that proves the rule: It’s fast, cheap, and good. But most of all, it’s huuuuuge, in a way that people struggle to express — in the past, we’ve said holding one of their slices will make you feel like a 5-year-old in the land of giants, and suggested you could wear a slice as a festive cape. Whole pies are akin to tablecloths or Conestoga wagon wheels — a certain viral photo shows a 6-month-old baby next to a full Lazy Moon and … the pie is bigger. But it’s not just about the stunting size. The wide variety of toppings make for endless flavor combinations, and the thin, crispy crust allows one to devour an absurdly mammoth slice without exploding. And topping it off, a long-revered special, the Boxcar Willy, nets you a cheese slice and a pint of PBR for just $6.50, a public good that has surely provided many a broke Orlandoan enough calories to live another day.

Best Dining Trend: Normalizing takeout

s your grandma may have said to you, it’s an ill wind that blows no good at all. And while a global pandemic may be the illest wind of any of our lives, it has led to a few small adjustments to the norm that are welcome. For instance, the widespread necessity of working from home means far fewer cars doing the daily commute, leading to cleaner air. Another unintended but overdue change to our everyday situation has been the rapid expansion of restaurants’ delivery, takeout and drive-through services. While none of these are new options, never before has there been such panoply of dishes available to enjoy at home — from ramen to cocktails to ice cream, even fine dining. We were even able to get proper wine with a to-go meal, which is oh so civilized. Menus have been optimized, employees have been trained, and pickup, delivery and drivethrough are no longer dirty words, no matter the price tag. It’s a welcome development, not just in pandemic lockdown times, but for anyone who might not be able to sit in a restaurant due to disability or illness. Here’s hoping it sticks around.

atrick and Holly Kahn founded Snap! Orlando in 2010, sparking a cultural movement in the region and helping rebrand Orlando as an international arts destination. In 2018 Snap! Orlando launched “CITY UNSEEN,” the first citywide Augmented Reality sitespecific public art project, in Orlando. Prior to launching Snap! Orlando, Patrick was publisher and editor in chief of The Book LA, a Los Angeles-based luxury art collectors’ magazine. The Kahns were featured in Orlando Magazine’s “50 Most Powerful People” issues in 2018 and 2019. he overall forecast for the movie theater sector is one of unrelenting grimness, but Maitland indie cinema Enzian is swimming defiantly against the tide of prevailing wisdom and maybe even flourishing. And you noticed, voting it as your fave spot to catch a flick locally — even over the big cineplexes. Orlando’s mainstay arthouse proves handily that bigger isn’t always better (although we were saddened when their plans to expand to three screens were shot down by the neighbors). With an adventurous bill of cinematic fare — both streaming and in-person, the proverbial different strokes for different folks — as well as a crackerjack menu that goes way behind popcorn and Milk Duds, and the Eden Bar on site serving up craft cocktail creativity, it’s an all-around pleasure to meet a friend and/or watch a film there. Special mention as well must be made of their various ongoing film series: the Peanut Butter Matinee films for kids, Music Mondays rock-docs, Cult Classics dredging up overlooked masterpieces, the Film Slams that spotlight local up-and-comers, and the jewel in the crown, the Florida Film Festival (which the Enzian pulled off safely back in 2020). MA’s annual Florida Prize in Contemporary Art brings together the crème de la crème of practicing artists in the state. Each year sees the Orlando Museum of Art filled with work by forward-thinking contemporary artists displaying creativity across mediums in competition for a $10K prize. And the centerpiece this year was the surreal, towering, dizzying installation Promised Land, by Maitland artist Robert Rivers. The art is a mixed-media rush of frenzied creativity, with Cubism running headlong into surrealism and creation myths, visions of various hells and afterlifes across religions and time, and sobering anti-war allegories in which sadeyed soldiers, their wounds still fresh, journey through a nightmarish ... purgatory? Valhalla? And yet, despite the oft dark and heavy imagery that populates his art, there’s a feel-good story here, we promise. Rivers’ win was doubly gratifying — not only was it the proverbial “local boy makes good,” but, even better, Rivers’ works as an arts educator at UCF, teaching and encouraging the next generation of artists in Central Florida. And especially now, teachers are more important than ever.

Immersive, open-air arts events

OVID couldn’t stifle Orlando’s artistic impulses — neither to create nor to spectate. After a lot of Zoom experiments (some truly impressive), when it became clear that this was going to be the new normal for far longer than we had all expected, our arts presenters did what they do best: They started solving the problem. Creative City Project, with plenty of experience producing outdoors art, were first off the blocks with their Bright Young Things theatrical walking tour through downtown Orlando, followed by the holiday phantasmagoria Dazzling Nights amid Leu Gardens’ leafy strolling paths, and Down the Rabbit Hole, which transformed Mead Botanical Garden into a madcap spectacle in which attendees encountered the iconic characters of a thoroughly modernized Alice in Wonderland scampering throughout the foliage. Then, this spring, Central Florida’s most important professional theater company returned to large-scale in-person performances in their original home: Orlando Shakes, which got its start in 1989 performing at Lake Eola Park as the Orlando-UCF Shakespeare Festival, presented A Midsummer Night’s Dream and Little Shop of Horrors in the park’s Walt Disney Amphitheater to crowds starved for live theater. The Shakes’ al fresco production lent genuine magic to this Midsummer fairy tale, and the effect was enchanting. Cole NeSmith of Creative City Project told us in February, “It’s been amazing to go into spaces like Leu Gardens and Mead Garden that are beautiful in and of themselves, and then illuminate those spaces in a way that brings new life … and helps connect people to them in almost wondrous ways.” As happy as we’ll be to return to the Lowndes Shakespeare Center’s cushioned seats and air conditioning in the fall, spending a freewheeling and fantastical afternoon or evening in bucolic environs with performers among the flora and fauna is a fine, fine way to spend a temperate day in Florida. Here’s hoping this is one trend that sticks around.

he year 2020 saw small business owners across the nation being forced to pivot, not just to save their businesses but to support their communities. Restaurants that once didn’t even have websites were forced to modernize and digitize, and to look at their operations through new lenses of pandemic-colored glasses. So let’s shout it out to some local pivot pioneers who went the extra mile during the pandemic to make an impact AND make a living, and have really set themselves up as the best of the best of Orlando. 4 RIVERS SMOKEHOUSE, a local chain and arguably one of the most successful barbecue restaurants in the southeast, transformed its parking lots into popup drive-through and pick-up lanes for not just doctrinal brisket sandwiches, but also hard-to-find items like toilet paper, milk and eggs very early in the pandemic. They transitioned from restaurant to crisis centers for their devotees and cemented their role as a community leader. Now their 4Roots Foundation has expanded state-wide with government contracts to feed the food insecure and their restaurants are spreading like locusts. THE NEW STANDARD’s to-go meal kits were welcome, but they were also one of the only venues in the region to continue to employ live musicians during the pandemic via their near-nightly streaming concerts. THE CITY OF WINTER PARK set the pace for local municipalities to get creative in supporting their downtown businesses with mindful, socially distanced outdoor events, designated curbside pickup locations with concierge services, and a recovery task force that lived that #OhanaLife and left no business behind.

THE CITY OF ORLANDO’S PARKLET PROGRAM was great, albeit curiously limited to Thornton Park, but the creativity shown by businesses like Maxine’s on Shine to completely transform their parking lot into an outdoor dining room, complete with pop-up wooden scaffolding, was much more impressive than picnic tables and planters in a parking space, and deserves all the slow claps we can muster. And lastly, let’s hear it for all of our POP-UP FOODIES who made delicious, decadent feasts from kitchens, tents, and the backs of broken down cars to keep us fat and complacent at home with special nods to Soseki, the Foreigner Experience, Yugiri Ramen Project, Orlando Meats, Brad’s Underground Pizza, Jeff’s Bagel Run and Meng’s Kitchen.

rlando Weekly readers really came through this year in the Local Color section, with a majority voting for ending racial inequality as the most important use of public budgets.

Springing from an outpouring of grief and outrage over the killings of so many POC by police, Black Lives Matter protests launched all over the United States, and all over the world, fostering a sense that this was a systemic breaking point. And Orlando joined in soon enough. For weeks in downtown Orlando — also in Kissimmee, and Sanford, and Winter Park — diverse crowds of hundreds and, a few times, thousands of people rallied. These were actions organized not by a political party but by young adults, most if not all Black, working on a grass-roots level with mutual aid resources and organizations. One couldn’t help but be inspired by the energy, the determination, the commitment and the peaceful nature of these gatherings. And, for the naysayers in the back: No, there was no spike in COVID-19 cases from these demonstrations. And these organizations were savvy enough not to be assuaged by good PR moves. Few would claim that Orlando city leaders had anything but the best intentions when they painted the words “Black Lives Matter” in 30-foot letters on the surface of Rosalind Avenue, following the lead of Washington, D.C., and other American cities. But many residents, Black and white alike, questioned the utility of the gesture. Almost before the paint was dry, the horizontal mural was marked up — defaced, in some people’s opinion; legitimately criticized (albeit in spray paint under cover of darkness), felt others — with graffiti saying “Defund OPD” and “Not enough,” among other phrases. A significant segment of the city rejected the easy narrative of “mural good, graffiti bad” and called out the mural as “meaningless and empty,” adding that legislative protections for Black people from police abuse and reparations to all descendants of American slaves would mean more than any mural ever could. It remains to be seen if the Defund movement — which is, in fact, a poorly monikered drive to move budgets away from armed response and into beefing up mental health resources and diversion programs — will take root in Orlando, but it seems a majority of our voters would love to see it.

ook, it’s life or death right now with this pandemic and we understand that fully and it’s our daily reality. But sometimes, while watching Orange County Mayor Jerry Demings’ coronavirus briefings, we’ve started to see hints of the same existential despair found in the old “Steve Harvey Doesn’t Want to Host Family Feud Anymore” mashup videos. Maybe it’s just our quarantineaddled brains, but it seemed like every time a reporter asked about the coronavirus strike teams, or what dickheaded move Gov. Ron DeSantis made to put this entire county in jeopardy this week, Demings would stare quietly off into the distance for a brief second that stretched into an eternity, perhaps mentally going to his happy place, then compose himself, purposefully not break into a primal scream, and instead matter-of-factly state something like, “There is nothing unprecedented about local governments trying to provide for and protect residents during a pandemic” (March 2021) or “I really don’t feel like I have to go to the governor to ask permission to be the mayor of Orange County” (Dec. 2020) or just mildly suggest yet again that, hey, maybe everyone needs to get vaccinated sooner rather than later. Sometimes a man’s face communicates more than his words ever could.

The DTO sculpture

ne of Orlando’s newest pieces of public art is a bright yellow sculpture that needs to know one thing and it needs to know it now: Are you down to Orlando? Orlando’s Downtown Development Board unveiled the new sculpture in May to commemorate their 50th anniversary — and it immediately raised text-savvy eyebrows around the city. Ostensibly, the letters DTO are meant to signify “downtown Orlando.” (But … “downtown” is one word … oh, never mind.) Still, we can’t help feeling like the sculpture belongs on a Readers Digest list of “cellular text message slang that you might find if you pick up your teen’s phone.” The giant lexical sculpture sits outside the Discover Downtown visitor center on Orange Avenue, easily visible all day and brightly lit up at night. Because if you’re Down to Orlando, you’re DTO 24/7. Meanwhile, the less said about the awkward patch job on the O, the better.

ary McGinn has been working to promote local beer in Orlando for over a decade. After a sevenyear career at Orlando’s first brewery, Orlando Brewing, she became taproom manager and co-owner of the Nook on Robinson, a beer bar in the Milk District that specializes in Florida local beverages.

y love affair with local beer started by a muddy lake in Texas, where a friend and I swigged Shiner on a sweltering night and swatted mosquitos from sweaty arms. Later, my dalliance would develop into a serious relationship when I landed a gig at what was, at the time, Orlando’s only brewery. After a serious seven-year relationship with Orlando Brewing, I stepped into a new venture as taproom manager and co-owner of the Nook on Robinson, a quirky taproom in Orlando’s Milk District. Our bar specializes in Florida beers, and needless to say, I’ve sipped a lot of local liquid. Here’s a few of my fave places in Central Florida to drink straight from the source:

SIDEWARD BREWING CO.: Even if it weren’t just a block away from my own business, I’d find myself at Sideward often. Killer beers (as well as cider and seltzer), dope food and vibes for days. BROKEN STRINGS BREWING: A hidden gem in downtown Orlando that drops some of the most interesting stouts and sours in Central Florida. They’ve also got a vinyl record store in their taproom.

BOWIGENS BEER CO.: This one might be my spirit brewery. Not only is the liquid at this Casselberry brewery topnotch, but the team is so authentic and goofy and fun.

TACTICAL BREWING CO.: A veteran-owned brewery just steps away from Baldwin Park. There’s always a diverse selection of delicious suds and plenty of dogs to pet on the patio.

HOURGLASS BREWING: This award-winning brewery has put out some wild beers over the years, but it always has something for everyone. Their OG spot is out in Longwood, but I frequent their taproom in the Hourglass District.

ROCKPIT BREWING: Not only does this coal miner-themed brewery in SoDo serve excellent suds, they’ve also got Cecil’s Texas Style BBQ available. I recommend the smoked brown butter wings paired with McCoy’s Irish Red Ale.

ao Le-Huu has been prowling the Orlando music scene since he was a skater kid at all-ages concerts and club nights. For the past 18 years, he’s been covering local music and touring acts officially as a columnist, 15 of them for Orlando Weekly.

n 2020, we remarked on how upside-down that year was. This year has just turned out to be a different shade of unreal. Even with reopening, venues and performers have struggled to find a balance between their livelihood and their safety on still-shifting ground. Personally, I’ve gone from clocking in over a hundred concerts a year to a record-scratching zero. Between such a long scene absence and now only going out in public looking like I’m in the band Clinic, I’ll be surprised if anyone even recognizes me anymore. But the human spirit is indomitable, and things were still willed and worked into existence around the Orlando music scene, even in the face of unprecedented adversity. BEST LOCAL RECORD: FRENS, SAD HALEN

One of the more exceptional live bands in recent years, Orlando’s Sad Halen opened 2021 with an outpouring of Bandcamp releases. But the best, most complete is this first one. Rocking and groaning like Dinosaur Jr. on a blissful shoegaze bender, the Frens EP is a triumph of tune and texture.

BEST RELEASE ROLL: ALIEN WITCH The Orlando no-wave act owns this category in both quantity and quality. In 2021 alone, Dee “Alien Witch” Crittenden has so far cranked out seven full-length albums — most over a dozen songs each, and none of them filler. Factor in the extraordinary stylistic range covered and you’ve got a marvel of accomplishment.

BEST NEW TEMPLE OF BOOM: THE VANGUARD Give credit to the movers behind this new downtown nightclub for rolling the dice and opening in a very uncertain (pandemic) environment. A complete overhaul of the legendary Firestone nightclub in both facilities and brand, the Vanguard has managed to re-establish this hallowed ground as a premier dance-music destination with some of the city’s most heavyweight bookings (e.g. Diplo, Carl Cox, Eric Prydz, ARMNHMR, etc.), thanks primarily to a partnership with EDM powerhouse Insomniac. An old dance-music legacy gets a fresh, gleaming reboot for a new generation.

BEST NEW VENUE: TUFFY’S MUSIC BOX Opening a new live-music venue in a time when people were retreating to their homes en masse is a feat. Even more so is doing it with this much direction and ambition. Since expanding to include an on-site venue and bringing on scene veteran Thomas Wynn as promoter and venue manager this year, Tuffy’s Bottle Shop in Sanford has rapidly become an area contender, boasting bookings like the Drive-By Truckers’ Patterson Hood, North Mississippi Allstars, Cordovas, Great Peacock and George Porter Jr. in their Music Box space.

Best Open Mic: Austin’s Coffee

n “Big Yellow Taxi,” Joni Mitchell sang caustically that “they paved paradise and put up a parking lot,” and for a time it seemed like a version of that scenario was in the cards for Winter Park bohemian hub Austin’s Coffee. The effort failed, or at least, it’s stalled for now, and that’s good news to the scores of budding performers who show up most nights to sing their lives at Austin’s many open mic nights. The many, many Orlando Weekly readers who voted Austin’s Best Open Mic can’t all be performers, so we’re guessing that’s a solid majority endorsement of the entertainment value to be found. Austin’s has a dedicated open-mic event for every taste or talent, whether it’s comedy, poetry, rap freestyling, singer-songwriter folk, or jazz. And these affairs are proven incubators of heavy local talent — America’s Got Talent finalist and touring comedian Preacher Lawson is only one example. Comedian Kirk Bonacci told Orlando Weekly in March that Austin’s “has done more to help the local arts scene than any other place in the city.” No joke there.

Best Live Music Club, Best Pub, Best Dive Bar, Best Bar Overall: Will’s Pub

t’s been a hell of a year for the Mills 50 nightlife staple, but the results are in and you, the readers, have nothing but love for Will’s Pub. Despite a multitude of pandemic-caused (doors closed, shows off the table) and non-pandemic-caused (the property being sold to a new owner back in March) challenges, the venerable watering hole rolled with the punches and even tried new innovations — the likes of which would have us crouched under the bar sobbing uncontrollably like a depressed Norm Peterson. With expanded hours, the development of the Dirty Laundry outdoors bar into gig space complete with stage, a partnership with Swine & Sons in running a kitchen for snacks and sandwiches on site, and a serious work ethic applied to health and safety policies, Will Walker and staff are doing their level best to evolve in topsy-turvy times. All while still putting out the strong drinks and neighborly vibes that keep the faithful returning night after night. Raise a glass, y’all.

Frontyard Festival

“I

f you build it, they will come.” OK, maybe no ghostly baseball players gave spectral pep-talks to the planners behind the Frontyard Festival, but the end result is pretty damn close to an ongoing Field of Dreams scenario. Launched late last year amid a pandemic that’s still far from over, the Frontyard Festival was the first of its kind — an al fresco, socially distanced arts and music series — and it’s perfectly suited to the needs of the now. Taking over the sprawling front lawn of the Dr. Phillips Center for the Performing Arts in downtown Orlando and filling it with a stage, a highlevel sound system and safely distanced pod seating, FYF is a great way to support the performing arts while still centering individual and community safety. And the Frontyard’s stage has hosted top-level talent, from King Crimson to Indigo Girls to Michael James Scott, along with movies, community events and even some exercise programs. The Festival secured some funding to stay open for a while longer, so take in some music and performing arts in the fresh air while you can.

Best Team Player: Thomas Milovac

reat jazz music is built on a solid foundation of collaboration and communication between musicians and, for our money, there’s no one locally taking this tenet to such radical extremes as bassist and composer Thomas Milovac. Since venues started reopening their doors to live music over the last few months, Milovac has been a ubiquitous blur of activity, equally comfortable leading or playing the sideman role in all manner of combos and spaces. Whether it’s skronking with free-jazz collective Bongus in large and small variations at Will’s and Grumpy’s (which saw him lying on the floor while playing), backing Ryan Devlin at the Blue Bamboo Center, jamming Skatalites songs with an extended Florida Man lineup at Tanqueray’s, hitting the open mic at Austin’s Coffee, playing a city event at Winter Park’s Central Park as one-third of the Tropical City Jazz Trio, or even somehow cramming the entire Unit Colossus 12-piece ensemble into Uncle Lou’s and conducting the music in the two-foot space between the bar and the players, it’s clear Milovac feeds off the endless possibilities of new and unexpected creative partnerships. Add in the launch of his Cosmo Sonic Collective label on Valentine’s Day (awww) to signal-boost music by his comrades, and it’s proof positive Milovac favors musical discovery over ego.

Best Vintage or Used Clothing Store: Out of the Closet

lthough it’s new to Orlando, Out of the Closet is a well-established thrift store chain, founded 30 years ago in Los Angeles. But you all showed big love to the store, even though the Orlando outpost has only been open since February — barely enough time to make it into the first round of write-in voting. Maybe that’s because Out of the Closet offers much, much more than simply used clothing and housewares. Part of the AIDS Healthcare Foundation, Out of the Closet stores offer free rapid HIV testing as well as an AHF pharmacy, providing a convenient place for clients to pick up their medications. Even better, 96 cents of every dollar taken in at OTC goes toward providing HIV/AIDS care to those in need. Orlando has one of the highest infection rates in the country, and although the LGBT+ Center and the Hope & Help Center both also offer free testing, more options can only mean more opportunities to save lives. But in addition to the mission, it’s clear shoppers have taken to OTC’s assortment of men’s and women’s clothes, furniture, dishes, decor, books and albums. It would be easy to attribute the above-average selection to some stereotype of gay tastefulness, but the truth is that the store has been overwhelmed with donations, what with Goodwill and the Salvation Army both taking PR knocks in recent years. Whatever the reason, they’ve arrived with a bang. Welcome!

s the days turned into weeks turned into months of working from home, some went quietly stir-crazy. Others, denied the gym time they counted on in the before times, were aching to stretch and sweat. Whatever the reasons, somehow skating — roller-, not -board, and on four (not inline) wheels — blew up from a cute trend to a national obsession. hose who spent the long months of 2020/2021 locked down alone will forever be marked by it. Never before (or god willing, again) have we spent so much time in sheer, total solitude. It’s no wonder pet adoptions went through the roof. And if you couldn’t get a pet — forbidden by the landlord, allergies, whatever — the next best thing was a houseplant. Everybody knows that talking to them makes them grow, so you absolutely aren’t a cabin-fever-riddled, demented old 49er spinning conspiracy theories to your leafy, green pack mule … you’re a caring steward of your little green friends! (No, not that kind.) And luckily, there are plenty of outdoors spaces in Orlando at which to acquire a new quarantine crew: Both Leu Gardens and Mead Botanical Garden hold periodic plant sales; Apenberry’s (College Park) and Palmer’s (Audubon Park) place stock largely out in the open air; and East End Market’s Porch Therapy and Winter Park’s the Heavy have kinda indoors/kinda outdoors plant bays, making it feel almost totally safe to dart in for a Pilea peperomioides and a few cute, tiny succulents. (Almost pettable!)

f 2020 was like a drop-tower ride descending directly into a dumpster fire, 2021 has been a boomerang coaster, careening from exhilarating highs to devastating lows and back again. The good news/bad news is that Orlando’s theme parks have rebounded from the eerily empty days after their initial reopenings to a summer season that has seen attendance levels approach their pre-pandemic peaks, only with the added pressure of chronic understaffing across the industry. Although the past year has seen more than its share of frustrations — first and foremost, the ongoing furlough of most Disney union performers — there were at least five moments at Orlando’s attractions that made 2021 an upgrade over its predecessor:

• The CDC urged Americans to dine al fresco instead of indoors, and Orlando’s resorts all capitalized on that advice with enhanced outdoor food festivals — which will, I hope, continue post-COVID. First Disney dilated its annual events to fill virtually the entire year, then SeaWorld expanded its seasonal calendar. Finally, Universal joined the fray with international Mardi Gras eats and a tribute store full of holiday treats. They all tasted like winners to me.

First we got used to wearing a face mask at all times in the theme parks; then we learned to put them on before entering a shop or queue. And then in the spring came that brief, glorious period when face masks weren’t mandatory and I could once again enjoy 3-D attractions without my glasses fogging over. Now we’re stumbling back to square one, thanks to vaccine hesitancy and the Delta variant, but it was wonderful while it lasted.

I’ve been on some of the biggest and baddest scream machines around the world, but nothing quite matches the quasi-religious experience of cresting the Jurassic World VelociCoaster’s signature top-hat and feeling your soul float out of your body

as your butt is ejected from your seat. Nothing, that is, except the head-spinning “Mosasaurus roll” that comes moments later, making for the best finale in roller coaster history.

The long-term survival of Orlando’s major players was never in doubt, but I’ve been pleasantly surprised how smaller attractions along I-Drive like Icon Park have persevered and even prospered. The home of the Wheel added a Museum of Illusions and an arcade, and the world’s tallest slingshot and free-standing drop tower are currently rising. Best of all, cult filmmaker Kevin Smith brought Mooby’s to life at Tin Roof as a fan-servicing pop-up, and I ate it up.

Last January was a low point for our nation’s democracy and Walt Disney World’s Magic Kingdom, as the curtain fell on the Trump presidency with rumors that the venerable Hall of Presidents might close forever — or be invaded by Muppets. Fortunately for liberty’s sake (and Liberty Square), the only robot inaugurated this August was President Joe Biden’s audio-animatronic doppelgänger, who’s now reciting the oath of office every 30 minutes for snoozing tourists.

Hagrid’s Magical Creature Motorbike Adventure

efore anyone even rode it, Hagrid’s Magical Creature Motorbike Adventure was already a sensation, if only for the long anticipation and the massively long waits to hop aboard. Unless you were hiding inside the Chamber of Secrets, you heard about the June 13, 2019, grand opening at Islands of Adventure’s then-nine-year old Harry Potter-themed area — the indoor/outdoor “story coaster,” which replaced the Dragon Challenge inverted roller coasters, made national news for the 600-minute-long line of fans that snaked all the way to the park’s entrance. So, could any theme park ride really be worth waiting half a day or more for? Readers have made it clear that this attraction is worth the wait. In 2020’s Best of Orlando Readers Poll, it knocked Avatar: Flight of Passage off its perch to take the top spot, and this year is no different. With a top speed of 50 miles per hour and no loops, Hagrid’s adventure isn’t so extreme that it will scare off tweens and grandparents, but don’t underestimate its twisty turns: With more launches than any coaster on earth and the longest track in Florida, it’s liberated more than a few lunches over its short lifetime. And beyond the thrills and spills, the ride is populated with detailed sets, Easter egg props and lifelike animatronics — all without a pair of 3-D glasses in sight.

rlando area wrestler Sawyer Wreck’s Twitter bio lists her occupations as both “professional wrestler” and “feminist kill joy,” and while we’d agree with most of that readily — we don’t dare disagree with anything she says, TBF — the killjoy descriptor may be false. There was something distinctly gratifying about watching her inflict punishment with everything but the kitchen sink on male opponent Dan Drennen during a (very) hardcore match at Mayhem on Mills’ comeback “Weird Science” show in February. Wreck stands at about 10 feet tall, we’re unscientifically guessing, and looks like a very distant relation of the Undertaker with her sinister demeanor and jet-black hair. The “Matriarch of Mayhem” has made a name for herself on the more outré, out-there end of the regional wrestling circuit, grappling for the aforementioned MOM, Gainesville’s gonzo Fest Wrestling, and even testing the grisly deathmatch waters in No Peace Underground. There’s nothing pretty or acrobatic about her style of wrestling. It reminds us of the raw physicality of Mad Maxine or Bruiser Brody — just domination through size and strength and a willingness to bend the rules. Next time she wrestles for Mayhem on Mills, you’re recommended not to miss it, because the big leagues are sure to notice her sooner rather than later.

Best halted Revolving Door: New coach + new beginnings for the Orlando Magic

he revolving door that is the Orlando Magic head coach position finally came to what we hope is a firm halt with the hiring of Jamahl Mosley in July. Mosley was lured away from the Dallas Mavericks, where he had served seven seasons as assistant coach, with the lure of running his own basketball program for the first time as the 15th head coach of the Magic. And the sporting world made clear the move was a slam dunk. “The Magic got it right,” trumpeted ESPN, and former colleagues and players showered similarly fulsome praise. Mosley is lauded as a communicator and a teacher, ideal for guiding the team out of a long funk. A couple of weeks later, the Magic made out like bandits during the NBA draft when Jalen Suggs fell into their laps after the Toronto Raptors made a surprising pick, and Wolverine Franz Wagner added even more young talent to the team. And last but not least, the team debuted Janis Timma, a tattooed giant and apparent supersized reincarnation of Rutger Hauer in Blade Runner, for Summer League play in August, and it’s an understatement to say that he impressed. “Magic Above All” may finally be accurate again.
