Last week we reported the chilling fact that over 10,000 people had died in Florida in the coronavirus pandemic. In fact, on Wednesday, Aug. 19, our death toll stood at 10,167, and more than half of those deaths happened in the last month. These grim numbers reach us as the state continues to plan for schools to reopen and push for a full business reopening as well.
@Ivan Williams Wow, like how many are fine with their fellow Floridians dying of this when we could’ve done something about it? Call out those who’ll be doing the same once more children start dying off, because those idiots deserve ALL the hate for being so ignorant in their odd confidence.
Possibly even more depressing than these numbers were the number of comments on our Facebook page claiming that the statistics are all lies and calling people sheep, bandying about the long-since-discredited “0.4 percent” stat (we get it, math is tough) or pivoting to what-aboutism in the form of comments like “But how many people die from regular flu?” (that would be roughly 3,000 per year in Florida, by the way) and “That’s a lot, but more people have died in New York!”
@Mandee Gustavson Loiacono It didn’t have to happen.
What does that have to do with the price of coffins? Do better, Florida. @Nick Rowell 1) Florida has most definitely cooked the books. They were counting multiple negative tests ON ONE PERSON, then only counting one positive test per positive case. They’ve also suppressed the number of deaths. 2) If it killed this many people with our extreme preventative measures, it’s very deadly and should be taken very seriously. 3) there are many other long-term health effects associated with this, so while everyone’s not going to die, some people could be left with lifelong lung issues. Is that a big enough issue?
‘ONLY FASCISM’
On the same day Floridians went to the polls to vote in the 2020 primary elections, Florida’s governor continued his attempt to disenfranchise returning citizens, despite a supermajority of 2018 voters’ will. The state is appealing a judge’s finding that requiring felons to pay court-ordered “legal financial obligations” to be eligible to vote is unconstitutional. Critics of the law liken it to a poll tax and say it creates “two classes of people, those who can afford to pay … and those who cannot.” @Gwen Brogden The fact that he assumes all ex-felons will vote blue just shows how ignorant he is. Voter suppression is wrong on every level but the GOP seems to think that’s the only way they can stay in control. @Katie Saville Of all the things he could be working on right now, this is how he chooses to spend his time.

OFFICIAL WHITE HOUSE PHOTO BY TIA DUFOUR
A PERFECT STORM
Once again, Donald Trump will need a miracle of fraud, cheating and voter suppression to win – and nothing is out of bounds BY JEFFREY C. BILL M A N
No less than Rutherford B. Hayes or
George W. Bush, Donald Trump took office in January 2017 with his legitimacy hanging by a thread. Having decisively lost the popular vote in 1876, Hayes claimed the White House following a serious of dubious and disputed recounts that prompted a constitutional crisis barely a decade after the Civil War; a special congressional committee ultimately voted along party lines to install “Rutherfraud,” apparently as part of a deal to end Reconstruction. Bush, another popular-vote loser, won the Electoral College in 2000 thanks to a 537-vote squeaker in Florida, where his brother Jeb was governor. This election – a debacle of hanging chads and butterfly ballots and a racist purge of the state’s voter rolls – nearly provoked another constitutional crisis; it ended when the Supreme Court squelched a statewide recount. These were not shining moments for democracy. Neither was Trump’s election in 2016. He won 3 million fewer votes than Hillary Clinton. His narrow Electoral College victory rested on hitting a royal flush in Pennsylvania, Michigan and Wisconsin. He was aided in key swing states by Republican efforts to suppress Black turnout. He had still more help from a politically obtuse FBI director who announced a last-minute reinvestigation into Clinton’s email scandals. And, of course, Trump benefited from a sophisticated Russian intelligence operation designed to help him win, which he didn’t exactly discour-
age – and later tried to cover up. Trump needed a perfect storm to get elected. This year, headed into the fall down double digits in polls, with the country reeling from a deadly pandemic and a bruising recession, he needs another. His solution? Manufacture his own constitutional crisis. Win or tear the country apart trying. No matter what happens between now and Election Day, if Trump swears the oath on Jan. 20, 2021, he will be an illegitimate president. And the United States will be, for lack of a better word, fucked. Admittedly, a statement like that should probably accompany a topic less banal than mail delivery. In any other administration, you could dismiss the uproar over the election-season evisceration of the U.S. Postal Service as a low-grade conspiracy theory. But nothing in the last four years suggests Trump warrants the benefit of the doubt, especially when his lackeys’ inexplicable decisions align so perfectly with his personal agenda. The political strategy hardly requires mental gymnastics. In a pandemic, people avoid long lines. During elections, Democratic precincts in urban and minority areas tend to have long lines – and that’s an issue to discuss another day – a problem that will be exacerbated by an inability to find poll workers. Force people in urban areas to risk their lives to vote, and you decrease Democratic turnout. Unless they vote by mail, that is.
Indeed, polling shows that those who plan to vote by mail overwhelmingly back Joe Biden. So Republicans have begun an all-out assault on mail voting, falsely alleging that it is prone to fraud, suing to stop states from expanding access to mail-in ballots, and pointing to expected mail delays as evidence that the Postal Service won’t be able to handle a surge of ballots. That last part is less a prediction than a promise – or perhaps a self-fulfilling prophecy. With the election just over two months away, Trump’s postmaster general, GOP megadonor Louis DeJoy, drastically reduced overtime, stopped guaranteeing on-time delivery, eliminated 10 percent of USPS mail-sorting machines and removed veteran employees as part of a hasty overhaul. In late July, the USPS told 46 states that it could not guarantee that mail-in ballots would arrive in time to be counted. Nearly 180 million people can vote by mail; imagine if millions of ballots arrive too late to be counted. DeJoy says the USPS needs to save money, although his savings will amount to a rounding error in the federal budget. But last week, Trump, unable to help himself, said the quiet part out loud. He opposes a $25 billion bailout sought by the USPS and $3.6 billion in emergency election funding for states because, as he told the Fox Business Channel, “They need that money in order to make the Post Office work so it can take all of these millions and millions of ballots. But if they don’t get those two items, that means you can’t have universal mail-in voting, because they’re not equipped to have it.” The president of the United States – who, just a few months ago, got impeached after trying to coerce a foreign nation to invent an investigation into his political rival – said on live television that he is sabotaging the Postal Service to keep people from voting and their votes from being counted. Trump’s brazen admission woke Democrats from their slumber. Speaker Nancy Pelosi ordered the House back to Washington to vote on a bill to force the USPS to reverse its service cuts, and Democrats demanded that DeJoy testify before a congressional committee later this month. The administration quickly backflipped, with the USPS pledging to stop removing mailboxes and sorting machines, and White House chief of staff Mark Meadows saying the president “is not going to interfere with anybody casting their votes in a legitimate way, whether it’s the post office or anything else.” But at this point, Trump has already tainted the election in a way no president has ever even attempted. Just because he got caught doesn’t mean he’ll stop trying – whether it’s disrupting the mail or dispatching paramilitary goons to “Democrat cities” or claiming fraud and refusing to concede. As November nears, the more desperate – and dangerous – he’ll become. He’s told us that nothing is out of bounds. We should believe him. Even if destroying the mail system is the only thing he does to subvert the election, it’s enough. He has crossed the Rubicon. No functioning democracy can abide an autocrat who uses the levers of government to disenfranchise millions of citizens for his political gain. Any democracy that does will be neither functioning nor much of a democracy for long.

® HELLO OUT THERE, ORLANDO. Has it really been a year already? It’s Best of Orlando time again, but we never could have imagined that we’d be unveiling this issue during a time like this. A lot of things have changed – oh yeah, we won’t be hosting a Best Of party this year – and so much of it seems for the worse (though there are some amazing glimmers of hope). But y’all came through and voted in force and let us know about the things and people and places and events that you think are the true essence of what makes Orlando the City Beautiful. So we crawled out from under our beds and did our best to showcase your choices … plus a few of our own. This year’s issue is themed around building a better Orlando: watching the city endure, come together and help one another despite a global pandemic, economic uncertainty, isolation and a really big (ahem) election. Think about it like Legos, for instance, where smaller, individual pieces fit together to form something bigger and cohesive and, most of the time, genuinely kick-ass. Rebuild, remake, remodel. In the pages of this issue, we’re watching you all build a better Orlando, and we’re rooting for you. — Matthew Moyer, Jessica Bryce Young, Daniel Rodriguez, Dave Plotkin, Faiyaz Kara, Seth Kubersky, Holly Kapherr, Janessa Gursky, Ida Eskamani, Kyle Eagle, Christopher Belt, Collin Modeste, Hollie Mahadeo, Jeff Kruse, Dan Winkler, Jerrica Schwartz, Rachel Gold and Graham Jarrett.

MEET THE ARTISTS
The dynamic duo behind Lego Explore Orlando makes finding fun in your city look like a snap
L
ike most kids, Charles Lindlau and Robert Privitera grew up with Legos as the toy of choice. Unlike most kids, however, the duo spun that childhood hobby into the popular local Instagram account Lego Explore Orlando. For just over a year, the two have been breaking the Orlando internets with engaging and endearing portraits of lil’ Lego folks posing in front of various Orlando landmarks, as a way of “looking at the city through a playful lens.” Their big viral moment came early on with a photo of Lego construction workers doing their darnedest to pitch in on the construction mess of the I-4 Ultimate project, and from there it’s been a whirlwind building-block tour of the city. We felt the optimistic and do-it-yourself nature of this project was a great fit (see what we did there?) for this year’s issue. How much has your Lego collection grown since you started Lego Explore Orlando? CL: We didn’t even own a single Lego! We bought a single Lego to start! So now we probably have – oh god – hundreds of figures and all of the accessories and a couple vehicles, so we could do drive-in movies and whatnot. It’s become a full-blown hoarding situation. What is it that inspires you to do a shoot at a given spot? RP: I think that one of the reasons why we started doing this is because we were always out and about and doing everything we could all the time. So, it was like, we do all these
things anyway, we should just have a fun way to document it and showcase it, And we keep them a lot of times in our car, so if we’re just driving by someplace and we’ll say, “Ooh, I’ve got an idea!” we’ll pull over and take one as we’re out and about. How are the Lego people faring in the time of social distancing? CL: The Lego people really miss going places! It is Lego Explore Orlando and it’s very hard right now to explore. We’re trying to be careful and if you look at our content you’d see a bit of a change since March. You’d definitely see a lot more outdoor things. Any reflections on doing this project that you’d want to share with readers? CL: I’ve lived here almost my entire life and Rob’s been here for 15 years or so, and it’s always amazed us how long you can live in a city and not really know anything about it. It’s very easy to fall into the same routines, go to the same chain restaurants, go to a movie on Friday night, and there are so many people that don’t understand all of the amazing things that Orlando has to offer. There’s an arts culture that has blown up in the past few years, a food scene that was nonexistent 10 years ago. One of the things we love about the account is that it causes us to go places we’ve never been before. And doing this for Orlando Weekly took us places that we’ve never been. And so we love that it allowed us to see even more of the city than we maybe would have otherwise. orlandoweekly.com

BEST FIRST STEP:
BLM MURAL PAINTED ON ROSALIND AVENUE They say the road to hell is paved with good intentions, and few would claim that Orlando city leaders had anything but the best intentions in mind when they painted the words “Black Lives Matter” in letters 30 feet high on the surface of Rosalind Avenue. So we were very, very proud to see our city joining the national trend of proclaiming that Black Lives Matter in the most public way possible. But many residents, Black and white alike, question its utility. If the mural is a giant reminder to city and county staff of what they need to change in terms of policing and systemic racism, great, it’s a first step. If there’s no action following up the message, then it’s an empty gesture, a pretty label slapped over an ugly history. Let’s not let that happen.

BEST ‘GOOD TROUBLE’:
BLACK LIVES MATTER PROTESTS IN ORLANDO The murders of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor and Tony McDade at the hands of police ignited an international response, and Orlando showed up. And continued to show up. And showed up even in the rain, in the defense of Black lives. Orlando protesters endured chemical weapons, military tactics, smackdowns and arrests at the hands of the Orlando Police Department and Orange County Sheriff’s Department. Yet still, thousands marched, and shut down the streets consistently – they even shut down the 408! Most recently, “Our Budget Our Block” organizers staged five back-to-back protests demanding the Orange County Commission reject a $15 million proposed increase to the Sheriff’s budget next year. In the words of the late John Lewis, this was “good trouble, necessary trouble.”

READERS POLL WINNER GATORLAND!
BEST UNWITTING PREDICTOR OF THE YEAR WE’D HAVE:
AN ENORMOUS POO IN LAKE EOLA PARK
Jan 24-26, 2020 No one could have known on Thursday, Jan. 23, what evil spirits they would apparently awaken. Poop-shame prevention spray Poo-Pourri stopped in Orlando on their “Giant Poo Tour” and as part of the marketing stunt, they erected a 30-foot-tall inflatable turd on Lake Eola park’s green grass – cute emoji version, not bad dog owner version – and invited people inside to “Let That Sh** Go.” What a caca-ca-razy idea.
BEST PICKET LINE:
UNITE HERE LOCAL 362
uniteherelocal362.org The workers of Unite Here Local 362, part of the largest union of hospitality employees nationwide – including those at the Mouse – have launched an effort to unionize HMSHost employees at Orlando International Airport. HMSHost employs nearly 800 people at 27 locations at MCO. Unite Here’s request for a mail ballot election to unionize was denied by the company, but the workers keep on fighting. They’ve demanded Orange County Mayor Jerry Demings and Orlando Mayor Buddy Dyer support their efforts to unionize. Neither City Council nor the Board of County Commissioners have the authority to do anything about the union election, but both mayors are members of the Greater Orlando Aviation Authority, and Orlando is waiting to see what they’ll do.
BEST NOISE CANCELLATION:
ORLANDO PROTESTERS DROWNING OUT RON DESANTIS
Gov. Ron DeSantis had planned a stop at Orlando’s OneBlood center to be his standard press spiel of pandemic-related misinformation and bizarre sports analogies. Instead, he was met with a classic Orlando welcome: fired-up protesters. They crashed his show to demand answers – to the lies, the failures, the record COVID-19 cases and deaths, at one point fittingly shouting, “You have blood on your hands!” The direct action made national and international news, and, even better, quite literally drowned out DeSantis’ voice.

MOST EMBARRASSING STATE TO LIVE IN:
FLORIDA DURING CORONAVIRUS
As spring break season approached, our governor put his mask over his eyes instead of his nose and mouth, refusing to look at the reality of the pandemic until it was much too late. This state – a state with the second highest share of senior citizens in the country and 10 million international visitors per year – surged with illness and unemployment, and our government did sweet F.A. to help. The eyes of the world turned upon Florida, and those eyes are now clenched shut in disgust. We can all take a little “Florida Man” ribbing in stride, but when the world literally shuts its doors to us, it’s time to think very hard about the representatives we are electing to serve the public.
BEST PILGRIMAGE:
VISITING QUEEN WELTIN’S ANNUAL SUPERBLOOM
Even a pandemic couldn’t diminish Orlando night-blooming cereus fans’ anticipation to witness the alien beauty of Queen Weltin, a huge tree wrapped in masses and masses of Selenicereus grandiflorus vines near the corner of Hardy and Weltin in Mills 50. The Queen blooms fully only one night a year, a magnificent explosion of dazzling, magical floral splendor. There’s nothing like it. And when it bloomed this June, a steady procession of devotees came, undeterred, reverent, socially distanced and respectful. Taking a moment of solace in knowing that beauty somehow endures. (If you miss out on the Weltin and Hardy bloom, spectacular cereus specimens can also be found in Mead Botanical Garden and Leu Gardens.)
BEST BLUE CHECKMARK:
WOKE STAN VAN GUNDY
Like a delightful gem sparkling amid the toxic trash heap of Twitter, former Orlando Magic coach Stan Van Gundy shines a beacon of progressive common sense. We’re so used to being disappointed in our white, male, older public figures that we could hardly believe it was really coming from him, this steady stream of pro-woman, pro-BLM, pro-gun control, pro-accountability tweets from @realStanVG. But he finally got that Twitter verification, a tiny blue checkmark in the “plus” column of 2020.

WRITER’S PICK!
BEST SHORT-LIVED LOOPHOLE:
“CHOMPING WHILE CLOMPING” AT THEME PARKS
After their reopenings, both Walt Disney World and Universal Orlando put mask requirements in place for their guests. Of course, eating is a big part of the theme-park experience, so they made an exception – guests could remove masks to enjoy some scrummy Dole whip or a Lard Lad doughnut. But some people took it too far, purchasing a food item as a sort of free pass from masking and walking around the parks with snacks in hand and masks a-dangle. Both parks later closed the chomping-whileclomping loophole, surely causing popcorn sales to dip.

BEST BUZZWORTHY BITE:
BIRRIA MACHETE AT HUNGER STREET TACOS
hungerstreettacos.com When it comes to hubbub generated during the pandemic, Dalgona coffee has got nothing on Hunger Street Taco’s birria – at least not in this town. Soon after they started making tortillas from imported Oaxacan heirloom corn, Joe and David Creech took things a step further with the “machete” – a giant brisket-stuffed tortilla in the shape of Danny Trejo’s weapon of choice. It’s served with birria, a wicked stew fashioned from roasted bone marrow, guajillo, chipotle and árbol chilies and a host of secret spices. Dip the machete into the broth and savor the social media sensation of the year.
BEST OLD NEW DESSERT:
BAKED ALASKA AT THE OSPREY
theospreyorlando.com What’s old is new again, so the saying goes, and the fine folks at the Osprey Seafood & Spirits are serving patrons a sweet dose of nostalgia with the retro-est of retro desserts – baked Alaska. If vanilla sponge cake and chocolate chunk almond ice cream enveloped in meringue that’s toasted tableside doesn’t get you happy as a clam, you’re probably dead.
BEST ORAL CONFLAGRATION:
NASHVILLE HOT CHICKEN AT CHICKEN FIRE
facebook.com/eatchickenfire After stints at À La Cart and East End Market, Chicken Fire owner Kwame Boakye says big things are in store for his Nashville hot chicken concept. We take that to mean either his food truck will roll into a permanent parking space somewhere or Chicken Fire will finally go brick-and-mortar. No matter the outcome, Boakye’s sure to continue making flames burst out of the yaps of his patrons. Even an oxymoronic “mild” hot chicken can peel the skin off your palate, but the “hot”? Or “hot x 2”? Or “hot infinity”? POOF!
BEST VEGAN SOUP:
BÚN BÒ HUE AT Z ASIAN VIETNAMESE KITCHEN
eatzasian.com The best reason to own an Instant Pot? Using it to cook up one of Z Asian’s soup kits, particularly the vegan bún bò hue (spicy beef noodle soup), a knockout soup with a broth that punches well above its meatless weight. There are secrets that go into the shockingly good stock, along with known entities jicama, daikon, carrots, lemongrass, onions and various spices, and their flavors permeate the strips of “beef” as well as the thick, round rice noodles. Toss in some house-made chili oil for a superlative slurp.
BEST SUPERMARKET EATS:
TAGLISH
taglishfl.com Taglish puts the “super” in supermarket eats. The Pinoy fare served up by chef Mike Collantes and his skilled staff from a stall at Lotte Plaza Market is as cheffy as it gets – Collantes has worked with such A-listers as Wolfgang Puck, Eric Ripert, Masa Takayama and the late Joël Robuchon, after all. Taglish’s new burger made with longanisa and bistek patties stuffed between ube milk buns with banana ketchup, “big mac” sauce, American cheese, grilled onions, tomatoes and pickles will certainly vie for best burger next year.
BEST LOCALLY MADE COFFEE INDULGENCE:
ICED COFFEE, LOS AUTENTICOS CUBAN CAFÉ
cubancafeonline.com Frankly, we don’t give a damn whether Los Autenticos’ “Cubano iced coffee” is completely authentic – it’s completely mind-blowing and that’s all that matters. An iced tumbler of their house blend topped with whipped cream, house-made caramel drizzle, cinnamon pastry tips and puffed trigo … Starbucks who?
BEST SUMMER SWEET:
MARACUJÁ CAKE AT BRAZIL FOOD MART
maisbrazilfoodmart.com Mais Brazil’s traditional passion fruit cakes – dreamy yellow cake with homemade dulce de leche, passion fruit cream filling and fresh passion fruit drizzle – are the perfect summer sweet. Sweet, tart, fresh and light enough to eat despite the heat. orlandoweekly.com

TIE! BILLIE EILISH AT AMWAY CENTER March 10, 2020 C0MPUTER AT WILL’S PUB March 8, 2020 BEST FINAL LIVE MUSIC FIX:
Young pop powerhouse Billie Eilish holds the distinction of being one of the final arena headliners in Orlando in March before the coronavirus pandemic shuttered all venues. But what a note to go out on: top-dollar production values, dizzying choreography and that voice! All in front of a packed house. Just imagine. Closer to home, we find ourselves fondly looking back on local cybernetic grinders C0mputer opening for Portrayal of Guilt that same month at Will’s. A brief, dizzying set of alien grindcore perfection, sweat flying everywhere, and it’s jarring how well their post-apocalyptic attire – particularly Daniel Harris’ mask – predicted the 2020 (and beyond) aesthetic.

RE:CHARGE
July 18, 2020 At Re:Charge, a concert designed for socially distanced audience and performers, there was an intense instant where the music and the cultural moment intersected profoundly. Pianist Joseph Jevanni Billups and cellist Yamilet Trujillo performed “Duet for Heart and Breath,” a piece that calls for the pianist to use a stethoscope to play in time with their heartbeat, while the cellist plays in time with their breath. Billups, a Black man, wore a shirt that read “Get yo knee off my neck.” The delicate, plaintive music was given entirely new meaning as the country reeled from the murders of George Floyd and Breonna Taylor while tens of thousands of Americans died alone on ventilators. Painful but cathartic.
BEST LOCAL HOT 100 CHARTING PRODUCER:
AYO
instagram.com/ayotheproducer Grammy award-winning producer Austin Owens, better known as Ayo, has been known and successful for a long time; he and his partner Keyz have produced charting hits for Wiz Khalifa, Ty Dolla $ign and Cardi B in the past few years. But their work on the pop juggernaut that is “WAP” – Cardi B and Megan Thee Stallion’s filthy-fabulous ode to, uh, humidity – rocketed Ayo N Keyz into the stratosphere. (They even knocked Taylor Swift’s Folklore off the Hot 2100.) And since Ayo lives right here in Orlando, we have to assume we have a piece of that shine, if only because of our WAP-ass climate. When you’re good at what you do, it doesn’t matter where you live. In other words, please stay in Orlando and keep our clout level up.

BEST LOCAL LIVESTREAM:
TIE! #STAYHOME FEST AND ACCIDENTAL MUSIC FESTIVAL
From the moment live venues closed their doors here in March, Jessica Pawli and her Southern Fried Sunday family jumped into action with five weeks of streaming all-day Sunday events collectively known as #StayHome Fest. Heavy on locals but featuring familiar faces from all over the country, this was both a showcase of the best in regional Americana, roots and country music and an important gesture in keeping the SFS extended family connected while isolated. Meanwhile, Timucua Arts Foundation revived their Accidental Music Festival online on YouTube and it was an absolute powerhouse. Elizabeth A. Baker weaving alchemical soundscapes outdoors and M. Lamar exuding Diamanda Galas-esque gothic grandeur were absolutely jaw-dropping, among other heavyweights local and worldwide.
BEST LOCAL PLANTASIA:
CIRCUIT CHURCH AT MEAD BOTANICAL GARDEN
circuitchurch.bandcamp.com On a beautiful sunny February day on the green at Mead Garden’s pavilion, the local analog electronic tinkerers and synthesists Circuit Church and friends put on Modular on the Spot, a blissful afternoon of burbling bleeps and bloops and calming washes of layered synths. We’ve been thinking a lot lately about how something like this points the way toward possible futures for live music. orlandoweekly.com

BEST LOCAL QUARANTINE SONG:
“PAYMENT STATUS UNAVAILABLE” BY FUTURE BARTENDERZ futurebartenderz.bandcamp.com Arch freak-punk solo project Future Bartenderz has been prolific during the coronavirus pandemic and lockdown, posting new songs online almost weekly. And they’re all drily hilarious pop gems that revel in rock & roll history and comedic timing. The best of the bunch is “pAYmeNt STatUs uNAvaiLAblE,” a ’70s-style punk heater that marshals Sex Pistols-level fury against the stupidity of Ron DeSantis’ hopelessly broken unemployment system, complete with noteperfect Brit slang and accent.

thepauses.bandcamp.com, soulbase.bandcamp.com In the more naive early days of quarantine (“We should have this handled by summer, certainly”) the three members of the Pauses remotely bashed out a joyous and ragged collection of covers of alt-rock anthems that shaped their musical DNA. Their version of Harvey Danger’s “Flagpole Sitta” has become downright oracular in the months since. Then there’s young trip-hop soul project Soulbase, who crafted a shimmering, seductive brew of ethereal R&Bmeets-new age fusion that simultaneously calms the anxiety buzz in the back of our brains and makes us lose time in a good way. Timeless songwriting that cannot be pinned down to a particular decade.

BEST UNDERGROUND FAMILY REUNION:
PRE-INC ORLANDO
Feb. 3, 2020 Attendees didn’t realize it at the time, but this was to be the last mass gathering of the experimental underground in Orlando for a long, long time. It had the feel of a familial gathering, with several generations of local musical outliers all taking their 15-minute turn amongst performers from around the country. So scene veterans like Dan Reaves and Jim Ivy played alongside TTN and free-jazz armada Bongus. New projects from familiar faces like Saturn Valley and Cabo Boing captivated, as did newer locals like Aaron’s Home and Jün. The closing sets from scene fulcrums Bacon Grease and event organizer Formaldehydra were an unintentionally fitting and valedictory farewell.
BEST LOCAL BAND THAT COULD MAKE TONY ALLEN PROUD:
BENGALI 600
facebook.com/bengali600 Led by the multifaceted Jeff Richey, this ensemble delivers a tight and joyous noise that’s some of the best multi-culti inspired groove this side of Brixton, the Big Apple, Johannesburg, L.A. and Lagos.
BEST LOCAL GEORGE MARTIN: CHRIS BARANYI, soundcloud.com/chris-baranyi Producer and recording engineer Chris Baranyi has the ear and the timing of a seasoned DJ. He mics a room (Blue Bamboo) or outdoor concert (Mills 50) like it’s his own private Carnegie Hall or AIR Studio. He knows when bad is good, and how great the groove needs to be, or not. He’s a natural and possesses a rare quality that can’t be bought: taste. BEST ARCHIVAL RELEASES:
SAM RIVERS RARITIES ON NOBUSINESS, nobusinessrecords.com
Orlando jazz heads and indie scenesters alike rejoiced at the news that NoBusiness Records had started an archival CD release campaign of unreleased music from free jazz titan Sam Rivers, who called Orlando home and played on local stages extensively from the early 1990s until his passing in 2011. The Sam Rivers Archives Series is produced in partnership with Rivers’ estate, with rarities and lost material from his whole career up for grabs, with trio and quintet material out now. They’re releasing chronologically and are up to 1978, so … soon? –ish? we’ll hear stuff he recorded right here in Orlando.

orlandoweekly.com mattkellerlehman.com As we spent the first months of the quarantine sternly admonishing you to “stay at home, stay at home” like a broken record, we became aware of a gnawing need to see fellow humans. We weren’t alone. Orlando Weekly photographer Matt Keller Lehman was eager to do a porch portrait series, interviewing and photographing Orlandoans in lockdown, and we quickly compiled a list of just a few near and dear to our collective hearts. Seeing these portraits and reading their words made them seem closer and infinitely farther away at the same time. But that’s life for the moment. We’re still locked down, but we hope to see you all again someday soon.

REDEFINE GALLERY, ‘STAY HOME MAKE ART’
Best Local Comedian
April 16, 2020 Throughout March and early April, Redefine Gallery’s single-named owner-curator Parker (part of a trio that includes Peter van Flores and Mauricio Murillo) says, he used his art to sublimate the anxiety of the rising pandemic. Then, “I started seeing other artists posting amazing pieces created with the same intention, and was super impressed with the amount of quality work that had already been created in a short period of time,” he says. So Redefine mounted Stay Home Make Art, a virtual art show for the quarantined era. It was a symbol of solidarity with every artist, every essential worker, every human fighting their personal fight against the virus.

‘LAKE LIFE,’ BY DAVID JAMES POISSANT
simonandschuster.com As the Starling family gathers for their last annual vacation at the North Carolina cottage they’ve owned for decades, the ties that bind them have frayed until they’re threadbare – and in the weekend that follows, they rupture completely, setting loose a tide of secrets and lies. Poissant is one of our most talented local writers and we’ve been waiting for this, his first novel, for what feels like a very long time. If 2020 did nothing else good, at least it brought us this book.

BEST BOOK BY ONE OF OUR FORMER INTERNS:
‘IN THE LAND OF GOOD LIVING,’ BY KENT RUSSELL
knopf.com Subtitled “A Journey to the Heart of Florida,” Kent Russell’s book chronicles the unfolding of a very bad idea: He and two friends – Iraq War veteran Noah and “dad-bodied” Canadian Glenn – decide to walk 1,000 miles across the state of Florida. (Yes, a very bad idea, but what do you expect from a person who decides to spend a whole summer with us, writing about City Council meetings and <checks archives> free wifi?) As the three trudge south down the dread peninsula, they encounter beauty, sleaze, vapidity and sagacity – sometimes all at once, as when they interview a man who plays Jesus at the Holy Land Experience or a dancer at Tampa’s famed Mons Venus.

‘WAIT FIVE MINUTES: THE FLORIDIAN PODCAST’
facebook.com/wfmpod You may think you know Florida history and lore – Ponce de Leon, orange groves, Spook Hill, blah blah – but you won’t know what you’re missing until you devote a few hours to catching up on “Wait Five Minutes.” Nick D’Alessandro poetically explores the past and present of this green swamp of ours, sorting fact from myth and chronicling his findings in a personal yet universal way – from Kermit Weeks to Henry Flagler, Lou the Homosassa hippo to Ice Age mastodons. (And if you get the title, give yourself 5 Official Floridian points.)
BEST PERFORMING ARTS PIVOT:
ORLANDO FRINGE’S VIRTUAL ‘FRINGE TODAY’
May 12-25, 2020 When Orlando Fringe first announced the cancellation of their 2020 Festival on March 19 – only days after they had promised that “the show would go on,” and long before COVID-19 cases in Central Florida started to spike – some thought the precaution premature, if not excessive. But it turned out to be a prescient decision that’s helped save the organization’s payroll through this precarious time. Best of all, the free “Fringe Today” online programming they presented in the Festival’s stead, which continues with monthly First Fringe Friday broadcasts, has become a model for other organizations to follow.
BEST ARTFUL ADAPTATION TO THE PANDEMIC:
BRIAN FELDMAN’S ‘#TXTSHOW’ GOES GLOBAL
facebook.com/brianfeldmanprojects As coronavirus canceled live entertainment, countless performers turned to digital streaming, but if anyone was born to capitalize on this crazy moment, it’s Orlando Weekly’s favorite performance artist, Brian Feldman. After all, he sealed himself inside a skill crane arcade machine and sang musicals over the telephone long before social distancing was a thing. So it’s apropos that Feldman has spent his quarantine on a virtual “world tour,” performing his signature audience-interactive experiment #txtshow in Rhode Island, Colorado, even Australia – all from the safety of his Washington, D.C., apartment.
BEST NEW VISIONS:
KIERAN CASTAÑO’S ‘A CERTAIN KIND OF LIGHT’
Jan. 10-31, 2020 Sanford-based artist Kieran Castaño has exhibited in Orlando before, but his Mills Gallery retrospective in January was the best encapsulation yet of the creative evolution of this fearsome talent. Castaño’s personal perspective of living as a trans man informs the thematics of his work, with heartstopping portraits and defiant political statements all rendered painstakingly on canvas. His technique takes in Caravaggio and R. Crumb alike. The scale of his canvases is captivating, with breathtaking attention to detail in every line and brushstroke. orlandoweekly.com

BLACK ARTISTS FOR BLACK LIVES AND CENTRAL FLORIDA ENTERTAINMENT ADVOCACY FORUM
tinyurl.com/cfeafacebook Orlando’s arts community prides itself on being progressive and inclusive, but according to a growing number of local Black artist-activists, it still has a ways to go. June’s “Black Artists for Black Lives” rally downtown, organized by performers Elisabeth Christie and Danielle Harris, demonstrated the diversity of voices all calling for change in our community; and July’s three-day Central Florida Entertainment Advocacy Forum, led by Meka King and Felichia Chivaughn Ellison, helped kickstart a much-needed conversation about systemic racism in Central Florida’s art institutions that is still continuing online.
BEST EMERGENCY ARTS PATRONAGE:
FEED THE NEED FLORIDA
facebook.com/feedtheneedfl 4 Rivers Smokehouse owner John Rivers’ 4Roots Foundation started Feed the Need March 28 as a way to help food-insecure families. In May, Feed the Need began partnering with St. Luke’s UMC specifically to help local musicians, artists, creatives and theme park workers who saw their livelihoods severely impacted by the coronavirus pandemic. Twice a week Feed the Need volunteers serve free meals curbside-style at the Plaza Live and St. Luke’s to anyone who needs one, no questions asked. With well over 1 million meals served, there’s still much work to be done.

BEST REAWAKENING TO THE JOYS OF THE OUTDOORS:
EVERY PUBLIC PARK IN ORLANDO
For those of us who may not always take advantage of sun and such, rediscovering the natural world has been an oasis of serenity throughout the pandemic. Want to check in and say hi to friends in a neutral spot? See you at the park. Want to talk about a work idea? Think outside the box and convene at a park. Picnic? Park. Pet walk? Park. The cast of The Bacchae needs a space to do a socially distanced rehearsal? You guessed it, a park (Greenwood Urban Wetlands, to be exact). Our personal favorites are shady Dickson Azalea and the aforementioned Greenwood – and its adjoining cemetery – but really it’s a full-on tie for first among all of them. Shout-out to the City of Orlando Parks Division and the Orange County Parks department.

ORLANDO CITY SC AT THE MLS IS BACK TOURNAMENT
orlandocitysc.com Orlando City has finally given its devotees and supporters something to believe in, justifying our love at the best possible moment during the MLS Is Back tournament at the MLS bubble in Disney’s Wide World of Sports complex. New coach Oscar Pareja and captain Nani led the team through their best performance in years, and they came thisclose to winning the whole damn thing in a final nail-biting match against the Portland Timbers.
BEST MUST-HAVE SPORTS GEAR:
JOEL EMBIID ARRIVING AT MCO IN A HAZMAT SUIT
nba.com/sixers Philadelphia 76ers power forward Joel Embiid arriving at the Orlando Airport in July wearing a full hazmat suit on his way to enter the NBA bubble was simultaneously funny as hell, a heartbreaking commentary on how capitalism won’t stop for health, and a perfect performance-art reminder of how surreal the current moment is that no one even blinked. BEST NEW THEME PARK ATTRACTION:
SOCIAL DISTANCING SKUNK APE
gatorland.com The most timely addition to local theme parks’ array of attractions was not Universal Orlando’s Bourne Stuntacular show; paws down, it was Gatorland’s zeitgeisty new mascot, the Social Distancing Skunk Ape. Straight from the pages of a cryptozoologist’s guidebook, the native Floridian Skunk Ape emerged just in time for Gatorland’s reopening in May. And wouldn’t you know it, the Skunk Ape’s armspan is just over 6 feet wide, matching the recommended CDC guidelines for physical distancing.
BEST SILVER LINING TO SOCIAL DISTANCING:
HISTORICALLY SHORT THEME PARK WAIT TIMES
For years, we kvetched about the overcrowded conditions and confusing queue-cutting schemes at Orlando’s attractions. It turns out that social distancing was the solution all along: Since the parks reopened with restricted capacity, guests have been walking onto popular E-Tickets like Flight of Passage at Disney’s Animal Kingdom, and Hagrid’s Magical Creatures Motorbike Adventure at Islands of Adventure, with wait times measured in minutes or seconds instead of hours. It might not be economically sustainable for the parks, but it’s great for guests while it lasts.

BEST ESCAPE ROOM YOU WON’T WANT TO ESCAPE
THE BUREAU
thebureauorlando.com Creativity and high production values trump bad timing at the Bureau, the escape room that opened on I-Drive just in time for the entire world to go inside and get glued to the couch. Sure, it may seem counterintuitive to leave your house only to get locked in again, but the Bureau, which says it’s more an “adventure game” than a typical “escape room,” might be just the sanitary entertainment you’re seeking. Its cleverness, craftsmanship and mostly seamless technology will allow you to escape into an alternate reality for an hour or so. And if you still can’t bear to leave your bedroom, look for the Bureau’s live remote games, launching this month on their website.

BEST STIMULUS SHOPPING:
USPS POSTAL STORE CATALOG
store.usps.com Last week found us smashing the Add to Cart button on the commemorative Ruth Asawa stamps. But our real love is the Gifts section. If you dig, you’ll find puzzle postcards that become 3D dinosaurs, miniature mail trucks, even mail carrier costumes for kids (and dogs!). While the USPS store isn’t strictly local shopping, Florida is one of 34 states that offers noexcuse mail-in voting and Floridians have grown accustomed to it – and USPS is hurting for money these days. Take away the postal service, and you’re kneecapping what’s become an integral part of the process of democracy here.

BEST NON-ESSENTIAL AND YET ESSENTIAL CURBSIDE:
PARK AVE CDS
parkavecds.com Curbside delivery was a necessary innovation during the coronavirus pandemic for people needing groceries but not able to go into the store, or wishing to patronize their favorite restaurant when dining rooms were closed. On the rare occasion that we had disposable cash, we happily availed ourselves of curbside record pick-up at Park Ave CDs. With Instagram drops of records posted daily and online transactions, you could pull right up to the shop and a masked and gloved musicologist would drop your brown paper-bagged treasure right to you. And these days, a tiny joy like new music is worth the world.

BEST WAY TO WEAR YOUR HEART ON YOUR SLEEVE:
ORLANDO MERCH STORE
orlandomerchstore.com It started as a way to help out Orlando’s bars, restaurants and a certain free weekly newspaper (ahem) hit hard by the pandemic. But over the months, this bare-bones virtual storefront has swelled to showcase more than 150 designs supporting scores of small businesses and nonprofits – $10 of each sale goes right to the business, plus a $2 contribution to Second Harvest Food Bank – and the designs are mostly dope. Share the love, wear the love.
BEST BOTTLED COCKTAILS:
SUNROOM
sunroomcocktails.com Times really are tougher-than-tough for our bars right now. Mandated shutdowns plus lack of governmental support – in the form of livable unemployment aid for employees and real help for small businesses, not this farce of untraceable PPP dollars – means people are circling the drain financially, not to mention emotionally. We’re awarding the Best of Orlando crown to the Sunroom’s bottled cocktails because they really are the best of all the ones we’ve tried (toodle-oo, Spicy Boys, and you too, frozen hurricanes!) and not only are the drinks tasty, the bottles are pretty to look at and maybe pop a plant cutting into after you’ve drained them. But no matter where you shop, folks, please help out these the bars that work so hard to create and support Orlando’s many social scenes.
BEST TRULY SAFE CINEMA:
DRIVE-IN MOVIES
If you hesitate to step back into a movie theater, even if they are mostly reopening – maybe you’re immuno-compromised or live with someone who is – but you’re sick of staring at movies on a laptop or worse, a phone, a good compromise exists. Drive-in movies are back, baby! They never really left, but the few admirably stubborn holdouts are having a “who’s laughing now” moment, and pop-up drive-in screenings are multiplying to boot. In addition to the Ocala Drive-In and Lakeland’s Silver Moon Drive-In, keep your eyes peeled for future collabs between Bungalower and Enzian Theater or other DIY pop-ups.
BEST SOCIALLY CONSCIOUS SWAG:
BLM EARRINGS BY JESSICA BECKER
instagram.com/gorjessart Jessica Becker’s handmade earrings supporting anti-racist initiatives were THE protest accessory this summer. Gloriously huge, painted with portraits of Breonna Taylor, They Live OBEY skulls, and various slogans like “Say Her Name” and “Revolution in Progress,” and made of lightweight foam, they swung from the earlobes and gauges of many a woke marcher. And the only payment Becker asked for was a receipt for a donation of $10 or more to a local Black Lives Matter organization. orlandoweekly.com

bandcamp.com In March, Bandcamp presented the first no-fee Friday, a day when the service waived its revenue share on all purchases in order to support musicians struggling to get by during the pandemic. It was such a success that they made it a monthly tradition, and more than $75 million has since gone directly to bands. We like to look at no-fee Friday as a chance to spread the wealth locally by trying out releases from local bands like Sean Mingo, Witchbender, Ray Brazen, Bacon Grease, E-Turn, Red Rodeo and more. The next one is Sept. 4 (hint hint).
