The seemingly ageless Dyer has been Orlando’s mayor for what must now be 100 years … we’ve just been informed it’s more like 20 years; still an impressive feat! The easygoing Dyer has been carrying the weight of Orlando on his shoulders for all that time, with smile intact and the superpower of the golden thumbs-up at the ready.
This (super)power couple must have the ability to freeze time, because somehow they split their energies between Seito Sushi, The Osprey, Reyes Mezcaleria and The Monroe. The Chins are also staunch supporters of local chef talent, front-of-house rockstars, and they’re steady builders of Orlando’s fine dining scene.
CITY BUDDYLIFE DYER
LOCAL NOTABLES
WELCOME to this year’s Best of Orlando issue. Like all the best superhero movie franchises, this one is bigger and bolder than ever, with tons of new categories and honorifics. More than ever with the state of the world, we all need leaders we can look up to, so we looked around at our city for the brave and the bold, the ones who stand out from the crowd. And artist Isaac Rosales helped us reimagine some of our own locals as legendary. But the real superhero this year is you, dear reader, who turned out in force — a league, a legion with impeccable taste if you will — to vote for all your favorite people, places, things, sounds, visions, tastes, drinks and experiences. Thanks for holding dear all the things that make the City Beautiful … ahem … super. Read on, and as some guy somewhere once said, Excelsior!

This juggernaut of justice smashes through bureaucratic red tape to get things done his way: “For the people,” as we believe his battle cry goes. When he’s not in the courtroom, Morgan goes to his island stronghold in Maui, to develop his plans for minimum wage hikes and marijuana legalization in Florida.
This fierce progressive political firebrand represents Orlando in the state legislature, tirelessly working for a better world for her constituents and beyond. Not just her district but a majority of our readers think so — and so does Mark “Luke Skywalker” Hamill, who has repeatedly endorsed her.

CORINNE GAMMICHIA’S superpowers are her heart, her brain, and her muscles. For the past decade or so she’s been a single mom, but long before that she birthed a small business — Alchemy Salon — and raised it up, along with generations of talented hairstylists, nurturing it into a thriving local concern. This woman is fearless when it comes to pursuing a dream.
LOCAL MUSIC MATT HEAFY + MS. MEKA NISM These two definitely look the superhuman part, but Heafy (Trivium) and Meka (Meka Nism) pack a potent metallic punch too. Sonic screams, infinite hooks, and crushing riffs are deployed with ease by each, and their fans love them for it.
DRINKING + NIGHTLIFE KEITH & ROMI MAWARDI and their super squad, Team Market Group, are faster than the Flash when it comes to creating new scenes. With Celine, Tier, Mathers Social Gathering, the Robinson Cocktail Room, the Wellborn boutique hotel, Plantees Burgers and soon — we’re waiting and hoping — a reinvigorated Colonial Lanes to their names, they live up to their motto: Together Everyone Achieves More.
ARTS + FELICHIAENTERTAINMENTCHIVAUGHN + MEKA KING These righteous forces for change and diversity in Orlando’s theater scene are both multi-hyphenate talents — acting, directing, singing and writing are just a few of the lines on their résumés. King and Chivaughn-Ellison achieved the near impossible: They started the longoverdue conversation about systemic racism in Central Florida’s art institutions when they founded the Central Florida Entertainment Advocacy Forum, and they’ve gotten results. Much respect.
ATTRACTIONS + RECREATION SAVANNAH BOAN Do you dare venture into the swamp lair of Savannah Boan and her reptilian companions? Well of course you do, it’s Gatorland! Boan is dedicated to educating the public about alligators, and she’s not afraid to get up close and personal with a gator, croc or snake.
HEALTH, BEAUTY + WELLNESS
SHOPPING + RETAIL GUI CASTRO With a superhuman and unerring sense of style and eye for design, Castro designs all manner of clothing and finery for the modern man, which then makes its way from Brazil to his Orlando-based Lacastro Store. Castro seemingly peers into the future for the hottest trends.
BEST LOCAL ONLYFANS: JESSICA BARTON Jessica Barton’s OnlyFans account exists to make you cum. By “you,” we mean those of you who for whom a solo, tatted blonde gets the job done. Her fan base loves her perfectly even, head-to-toe tan and her fearless display of T&A (and a few other parts).

ESKAMANI Eskamani is a no-nonsense public servant who works for constituents and nonconstituents alike on real-time, actual solutions to issues facing the citizens of Orlando, Orange County and Florida at large. She may be elected to represent District 47, but anyone who turned to her office for help with Florida’s sickeningly broken unemployment system in the scary months of the shutdown can tell you that her assistance reaches beyond boundaries. Her tireless work ethic and fierce understanding of policy sometimes outpaces her colleagues in Tallahassee, and often propels her onto the national stage. She IS the future of Florida politics.

This year, when the elected officials running our state (into the ground) are using our taxes to fund hate and division against LGBTQ+ youth, Orlando Weekly readers have named Zebra Coalition our best local activist group. Zebra Coalition is a network of organizations providing compassionate and confidential services to LGBTQ+ young people facing homelessness, bullying, isolation from their families, and physical, sexual and drug abuse with individualized programs to guide them to recovery and stability. The Zebra team does amazing work — so amazing that Gov. Ron DeSantis two-times vindictively vetoed their funding from the proposed state budget. That Zebra Coalition has been named Best Local Activist Group is a testament to their work, and to Orlando’s commitment to supporting LGBTQ+ youth.

The longtime talk-radio stalwarts anchoring the lineup of local radio station Real Radio 104.1-FM may have come to fame during the shock-jock boom of the 1990s, but they’ve maintained and evolved while legions of their peers have fallen by the wayside as spent forces. Head monster Russ Rollins, aided and abetted by Angel Rivera, Carlos Navarro, Ryan Holmes, Angelique, D-Strong and even a returning Savannah Boan, are funny and engaging and downright weird during hours when most of us are still bleary-eyed and nonverbal. 1st: “Monsters in the Morning,” realradio.iheart.com 2nd: “Johnny’s House,” xl1067.iheart.com 3rd: “The Jim Colbert Show,” realradio.iheart. com

BEST LOCAL PODCAST: “A MEDIOCRE TIME WITH TOM & DAN” This understated podcast nails the eternally popular yet difficult-to-pull-off format of “a coupla guys sittin’ around shooting the shit.” It’s basically “two dudes that decided to go out and do something on their own and were successful,” Tom Vann once said; he and Daniel Dennis have been engaging audiences since 2009 — and they’ve managed to build a rabidly loyal fanbase. (By the way: Our sincere thanks to Tom, Dan and their fanatical fans for refraining from filling in “A Mediocre Time With Tom & Dan” in Every. Single. Category. Of the Readers Poll this year.)

BEST KEPT SECRET IN ORLANDO: SANFORD Looks like the secret’s out! The people have spoken — logic be damned — and the word on the street is that Sanford’s the place to be. A mere stone’s throw from Metro Orlando up I-4, Sanford offers myriad eateries, drinkeries, live entertainment of all types and block parties to spare, along with a friendly neighborhood feel when you’re out and about. And it’s even (a hair) more affordable to live there than Orlando. Well, not for long with this much buzz.

Combine the live critters and authentic African-inspired architecture with the bountiful Boma buffet and award-winning Jiko restaurant, and the Lodge leaves staycation guests little reason to leave the hotel for its nearby namesake theme park.
EAT IN: MILLS 50 Once the desolate runway of street punks and summer-roll seekers, this perennially shifting strip of cool has achieved such a full-fledged renaissance that there’s a very tangible danger it will steal the “real Orlando” crown from downtown permanently. A glow-up of nicely curated eateries like Black Rooster Taqueria, Pig Floyd’s Urban Barbakoa and The Strand mix nicely with the long-established Asian flavor of the neighborhood. Long a go-to for stalwart foodies and nightlife devotees, Mills 50 has seen a drinkers’ renaissance as well: Joining the deep and influential tenure of Will’s Pub now are the trendy slickness of Tori Tori and the makeover of lore-filled Wally’s. Now there’s a thriving scene for any type of adventure, from the down-and-dirty Uncle Lou’s/Grumpy’s Underground double punch of street grime to the Tory Burch casual of the Guesthouse and Sunroom. It’s a tightly packed half-mile of the best tastes in Orlando.

Chasing trends in dining is fine, but the fundamentals of good food, good service and good atmosphere never go out of style. And that’s exactly what Kres has consistently provided for nearly 20 years. But wait, what’s this? Bucking the steakhouse stereotype, Kres also offers a vegan menu — not a dish, but a multi-option, three-course bill of fare. With quality cuisine, attentive staff and a dark, elegant interior, Kres stands serene in the ever-shifting sands of downtown’s ephemeral dining scene.

For over 20 years, Hollerbach’s in Sanford has provided residents of Central Florida authentic German cuisine from creamy obatzda teller to glistening German chocolate cake. We highly recommend the gurkensalat and sweet red cabbage along with a pint of Helles bier. Diners can celebrate with live German Polka Thursday through Sunday hosted by Hollerbach’s in-house performers Jimmy and Eckhard, who play the spoons, the Alpine bells and Alpine horn. Hollerbach’s is also home to a rooftop Biergarten, the new Art Haus gallery and the nearby German Market where you can purchase German candy and Trachten threads.

BEST THING TO EAT AT A THEME PARK: DOLE WHIP Between churros, turkey legs and pizza fries, there’s some stiff competition for the top theme park snack, but Dole Whip clearly deserves the win for four reasons: First, it’s an Orlando original, having debuted at Magic Kingdom in 1984, before Disneyland. Second, it’s cool; that frozen pineapple sorbet is perfect when it’s 105 degrees in Adventureland. Third, it’s vegan, if you leave out the vanilla twist, and fourth, it’s free; just ask for a sample at Aloha Isle, but one taste may have you hooked.

BEST LOCAL ACTOR/ACTRESS: CARLOS NAVARRO Besides his early-morning riffing as a co-host of 104.1-FM’s stalwart “Monsters in the Morning” radio show, Navarro has been putting in the work for years on his acting, and it’s starting to pay big-time pop culture dividends. After one-shots on shows from “Prison Break” to “The Adventures of Kimmy Schmidt,” Navarro got something far meatier with a recurring role in AMC’s “The Walking Dead” as Alvaro. And he just was immortalized in the Marvel Cinematic Universe as part of the Tracksuit Mafia antagonists on the Disney+ show “Hawkeye.” To the top indeed! 1st: Carlos iamcarlosnavarro.comNavarro, 2nd: Tymisha Harris, facebook.com/ 3rd:tymisha.harrisRisaRisque, missrisquebusinessfacebook.com/

Drag Queen Story Hour at the Center is Orlando Weekly readers’ pick for best literary reading series, and with good reason. The family-friendly series features local storytellers who use the art of drag to read books to kids, encouraging a love of reading along with body positivity, loving ourselves, and treating each other with kindness. Locally, the event first happened at the Orlando Public Library, earning them a Writers’ Pick in 2017; most recently, The Center hosted Gidget Galore reading storybooks around Christmastime. Here’s hoping our readers’ support encourages a resurgence of this local celebration of imagination.

This local arthouse institution has been going since the 1980s, providing cinematic thrills of all persuasions. The cozy Maitland theater’s bill of fare takes in the cutting-edge and the blockbuster, along with plenty of one-night-only special screenings, themed series, local showcases and the prestigious Florida Film Festival. Unlike your typical multiplex, the single-screen interior arrangement is more like a restaurant or cabaret, with separate tables to better accommodate goodies from the kitchen and bar. In the age of streaming, a trip to the Enzian is more than enough incentive to tear you away from your couch/Netflix vortex.

BEST LOCAL COMPOSER:CONTEMPORARY
BOBBY KOELBLE F. Scott Fitzgerald once said that there are no second acts in American life. Well, Orlando musician Bobby Koelble proves him a filthy liar. A young Koelble contributed guitar work to Orlando deathmetal icons Death’s seminal 2008 album “Symbolic,” a milestone for the band. Now he’s a music educator at UCF, a mainstay of the musicians clustered around Winter Park’s Blue Bamboo Center, a well-regarded blues and jazz player and a composer in his own right. We can’t help but wonder what he’ll do next.

Besides being one of the most pleasant and accommodating promoters to work with, Rones also fills a critical function in the local music scene as an approachable impresario willing to give young, unknown artists both a chance and a stage.
BEST LIVE MUSIC CLUB: WILL’S PUB Few places are as authentically and notably Orlando as Will’s Pub. In the 27 years since it first opened, this church of rock & roll has kept it 100 percent real. BEST THEME PARK BAR: FINNEGAN’S BAR & GRILL Most watering holes inside Orlando’s theme parks feature menus overflowing with overpriced premixed cocktails, and usually seek to shuffle their patrons off to their next ride as swiftly as possible. Located in the New York section of Universal Studios Florida, Finnegan’s has long been the exception to the rule, with a long-serving staff of welcoming barkeeps who make it the Cheers of area attractions. The bar’s traditional Irish-American trappings are only props on a movie set, but the properly poured pints of Guinness are perfectly authentic and pair well with the signature deep-fried “webb” of potatoes and onions. Just beware: The only thing scarier than the haunted houses at Halloween Horror Nights is the wait to get a drink at Finnegan’s before the event.

BEST ZERO-PROOF COCKTAIL: TORI TORI We’re glad that the infantilizing portmanteau “mocktail” has been replaced in most establishments with “zero-proof” or “NA (non-alcoholic).” But we’re over the moon that the actual thing, whatever you call it, is being taken seriously as well. The days of settling for a soda water with a dash of bitters (at full cocktail prices) are over in serious bars, and Orlando bartenders have begun using the same skills on mixtures that don’t include spirits that they do on the boozy ones. The same exotic juices, artisanal carbonated mixers, housemade infusions, herbs and more find their way onto the non-alcoholic section of Tori Tori’s drinks menu. And although they do use the M-word, the result when you “Ask Your Bartender for a Bespoke Mocktail ($8)” is worth the mild cringe. 1st: Tori Tori, toritoripub.com 2nd: The Guesthouse, instagram.com/ 3rd:the_guesthouseHungryPants, eathungrypants.com

BEST ANTIQUE STORE: RENNINGER’S FLEA MARKET & ANTIQUE CENTER Much like its sister locations in Pennsylvania’s Amish Country, Renninger’s Mount Dora location is like an organically powered time machine, where you can turn back the calendar a couple of decades by rummaging through the collective attics of ten thousand grandmas. You can easily get lost for hours any weekend in the vibrant farmers market and permanent flea market, which teems with every dust-encrusted collectible imaginable. But for the full effect, be sure to attend one of their seasonal sales events — especially the semiannual Extravaganzas, which attract hundreds of antique vendors from across the country, covering acres of rolling hills with their brimming booths. Bring walking shoes and a sturdy wagon for carrying purchases, because antiquing at Renninger’s ain’t for the fainthearted.

BEST PLACE TO BUY A NEW CAR: TESLA We’re no fans of Elon Musk, but hey, Henry Ford wasn’t exactly a peach of a guy, either. And it must be admitted that, alongside all of his juvenile media antics, Musk has achieved the seemingly impossible: He’s made electric vehicles achingly popular. Even better, there’s the knock-on effect of forcing other automakers to start competing in the EV arena as well. On the posh cobblestones of Winter Park and Isleworth, which once teemed with Hummers and Escalades, you can’t go a block without seeing multiple Model Ys, not to mention Models S, 3, and X. (Like we said: juvenile.) Jokes aside, seeing more and more people break their dependence on fossil fuels is one of the most encouraging developments of 2022. 1st: Tesla, tesla.com 2nd: Toyota of Orlando, toyotaoforlando. 3rd:com Holler Hyundai, hollerhyundai.com

BEST OB/GYN: PARENTHOODPLANNED Never has Planned Parenthood’s central tenet — “care, no matter what” — meant so much to so many. The healthcare provider is often the only one accessible to women and LGBTQ+ people, with various programs to make reproductive care more accessible, as well as accepting those fortunate patients with health insurance. Orlando Weekly readers have named Planned Parenthood Orlando’s best OB/GYN, a confirmation of their staff’s commitment to serving Central Floridians as we consult with our family, faith and medical professionals (not politicians) about the healthcare decisions best for us. As more Republican-led states pursue extreme abortion bans, Planned Parenthood’s doors in Florida remain open, supporting reproductive freedom for Americans across the nation.

BEST PLACE TO ADOPT A PET: PET ALLIANCE OF GREATER ORLANDO Orlando Weekly readers gave a hand (paw) to this local pet shelter that is doing the most for dogs and cats that just need a home and some love. BEST PEST CONTROL: MASSEY SERVICES PEST CONTROL In Florida, insects outnumber humans by approximately a bajillion to one, and every resident knows about the eternal battle to keep the creeping hordes at bay. Whether it’s discouraging invaders from eating holes in the lawn, ensuring that termites don’t take roost under the roof, or combating intermittent ant incursions, many Orlandoans happily leave the insecticiding to Massey Services — including a few of us here on staff. (Special shout-out to Robert, who enthusiastically battles bugs in the Curry Ford area while sharing a trove of fascinating facts about his prey.)

130 ORLANDO WEEKLY ● AUG. 31-SEPT. 6, 2022 ● orlandoweekly.com
AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18): To be the best Aquarius you can be in the coming weeks, I suggest the following: No. 1: Zig when others zag. Zag when others zig. No. 2: Play with the fantasy that you’re an extraterrestrial who’s engaged in an experiment on planet Earth. No. 3: Be a hopeful cynic and a cheerful skeptic. No. 4: Do things that inspire people to tell you, “Just when I thought I had you figured out, you do something unexpected to confound me.” No. 5: Just for fun, walk backward every now and then. No. 6: Fall in love with everything and everyone: a D-list celebrity, an oak tree, a neon sign, a feral cat.
LEO (July 23-Aug. 22): Blogger Scott Williams writes, “There are two kinds of magic. One comes from the heroic leap, the upward surge of energy, the explosive arc that burns bright across the sky. The other kind is the slow accretion of effort: the water-on-stone method, the soft root of the plant that splits the sidewalk, the constant wind that scours the mountain clean.” Can you guess which type of magic will be your specialty in the coming weeks, Leo? It will be the laborious, slow accretion of effort. And that is precisely what will work best for the tasks that are most important for you to accomplish.
LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22): In her book Tales From Earthsea, Libra-born Ursula K. Le Guin wrote, “What goes too long unchanged destroys itself. The forest is forever because it dies and dies and so lives.” I trust you’re embodying those truths right now. You’re in a phase of your cycle when you can’t afford to remain unchanged. You need to enthusiastically and purposefully engage in dissolutions that will prepare the way for your rebirth in the weeks after your birthday. The process might sometimes feel strenuous, but it should ultimately be great fun.
ARIES (March 21-April 19): In his poem “Autobiographia Literaria,” Aries-born Frank O’Hara wrote, “When I was a child, I played in a corner of the schoolyard all alone. If anyone was looking for me, I hid behind a tree and cried out, ‘I am an orphan.’” Over the years, though, O’Hara underwent a marvelous transformation. This is how his poem ends: “And here I am, the center of all beauty! Writing these poems! Imagine!” In the coming months, Aries, I suspect that you, too, will have the potency to outgrow and transcend a sadness or awkwardness from your own past. The shadow of an old source of suffering may not disappear completely, but I bet it will lose much of its power to diminish you.
TAURUS (April 20-May 20): In his poem “Auguries of Innocence,” William Blake (1757–1827) championed the ability “to see a World in a Grain of Sand. And a Heaven in a Wild Flower. Hold Infinity in the palm of your hand.” According to my reading of the astrological omens, Taurus, you are primed to do just that in the coming days. You have the power to discern the sacred in the midst of mundane events. The magic and mystery of life will shine from every little thing you encounter. So I will love it if you deliver the following message to a person you care for: “Now I see that the beauty I had not been able to find in the world is in you.”
orlandoweekly.com ● AUG. 31-SEPT. 6, 2022 ● ORLANDO WEEKLY 131
SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21): As a Scorpio, novelist Fyodor Dostoyevsky was rarely guilty of oversimplification. Like any intelligent person, he could hold contradictory ideas in his mind without feeling compelled to seek more superficial truths. He wrote, “The causes of human actions are usually immeasurably more complex and varied than our subsequent explanations of them.” I hope you will draw inspiration from his example in the coming weeks, dear Scorpio. I trust you will resist the temptation to reduce colorful mysteries to straightforward explanations. There will always be at least three sides to every story. I invite you to relish glorious paradoxes and fertile enigmas.
PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20): A blogger who calls herself HellFresh writes, “Open and raw communication with your partners and allies may be uncomfortable and feel awkward and vulnerable, but it solves so many problems that can’t be solved any other way.” Having spent years studying the demanding arts of intimate relationships, I agree with her. She adds, “The idea that was sold to us is ‘love is effortless and you should communicate telepathically with your partner.’ That’s false.” I propose, Pisces, that you fortify yourself with these truths as you enter the Reinvent Your Relationships phase of your astrological cycle.
CANCER (June 21-July 22): “My own curiosity and interest are insatiable,” wrote Cancerian author Emma Lazarus (1849–1887). Inspired by the wealth of influences she absorbed, she created an array of poetry, plays, novels, essays and translations — including the famous poem that graces the pedestal of America’s Statue of Liberty. I recommend her as a role model for you in the coming weeks, Cancerian. I think you’re ripe for an expansion and deepening of your curiosity. You will benefit from cultivating an enthusiastic quest for new information and fresh influences. Here’s a mantra for you: “I am wildly innocent as I vivify my soul’s education.”
VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22): “Now that I’m free to be myself, who am I?” Virgo-born Mary Oliver asks that question to start one of her poems. She spends the rest of the poem speculating on possible answers. At the end, she concludes she mostly longs to be an “empty, waiting, pure, speechless receptacle.” Such a state of being might work well for a poet with lots of time on her hands, but I don’t recommend it for you in the coming weeks. Instead, I hope you’ll be profuse, active, busy, experimental and expressive. That’s the best way to celebrate the fact that you are now freer to be yourself than you have been in a while.
SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21): Author Zadie Smith praised Sagittarian writer Joan Didion. She says, “I remain grateful for the day I picked up Joan Didion’s Slouching Towards Bethlehem and realized that a woman could speak without hedging her bets, without hemming and hawing, without making nice, without sounding pleasant or sweet, without deference, and even without doubt.” I encourage Sagittarians of every gender to be inspired by Didion in the coming weeks. It’s a favorable time to claim more of the authority you have earned. Speak your kaleidoscopic wisdom without apology or dilution. More fiercely than ever before, embody your high ideals and show how well they work in the rhythms of daily life.
CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19): Capricorn novelist Marcia Douglas writes books about the history of her people in Jamaica. In one passage, she writes, “My grandmother used to tell stories about women that change into birds and lizards. One day, a church-going man dared to laugh at her; he said it was too much for him to swallow. My grandmother looked at him and said, ‘I bet you believe Jesus turned water into wine.’” My purpose in telling you this, Capricorn, is to encourage you to nurture and celebrate your own fantastic tales. Life isn’t all about reasonableness and pragmatism. You need myth and magic to thrive. You require the gifts of imagination and art and lyrical flights of fancy. This is especially true now. To paraphrase David Byrne, now is a perfect time to refrain from making too much sense.
GEMINI (May 21-June 20): “The time you enjoy wasting is not wasted time,” said philosopher Bertrand Russell. I will add that the time you enjoy wasting is often essential to your well-being. For the sake of your sanity and health, you periodically need to temporarily shed your ambitions and avoid as many of your responsibilities as you safely can. During these interludes of refreshing emptiness, you recharge your precious life energy. You become like a fallow field allowing fertile nutrients to regenerate. In my astrological opinion, now is one of these revitalizing phases for you.

Q: I’ve been with my wife for 10 years. We are both 36 years old. We moved in fast and didn’t take time to learn certain things about one another. For example, I watch porn, which she only found out about after we moved in. She had a visceral reac tion. She told me it was a dealbreaker for her, no negotiation. I agreed to stop but didn’t. Fast forward 10 years and now I’m medicated for ADHD, which makes it much easier to avoid impulse behaviors like looking at porn. We have come close to divorce over this issue, as well as over how toxic I was before getting treatment for my ADHD. I’ve contributed my share of negativity to the marriage. Now, as it stands, the agreement we have is that I will not watch porn of any kind. This is where we really start to differ. To her, porn is masturbating to ANYTHING. Looking at porn? Not allowed. Looking at women in bikinis? Not allowed. Coming across something that sexually charges me and mastur bating to it? I have betrayed her trust. So, I don’t watch “porn” anymore but I feel extremely resentful about how I am controlled. The latest example of this was when she was helping our kid play a game on a device that had to be connected to Facebook. Mine was connected, and a message came up with a recent conversation. In it I thanked a friend for being there for me, checking in on me, sending jokes, etc. This friend likes to send funny memes, some of which are risqué. I mentioned that I appreciated his jokes, even the ones that would have “upset my wife.” She is now accusing me of using friends (and memes) as loopholes to get around my promise NOT to look at porn. I’m so tired. I have so much shame around mas turbation now and I feel like I have no privacy. We are about to see another couples counselor. Any suggestions for me? Worried About This Constant Harassment Eroding Relationship I don’t know exactly what your wife has had to put up with. You mention toxic behavior on your part prior to seeking treatment for ADHD. Toxic energy, toxic actions, toxic toxins — whatever you did, I’m going to assume your bullshit came close to intoler able, WATCHER, and award your wife some points for putting up with your bullshit. With that said … giving up porn is a price of admission some are willing to pay. A person with a healthy relationship to porn — someone who can enjoy porn in moderation, someone who can use porn without neglecting their partner sexually and/ or being inconsiderate about their partner’s feel ings — sometimes falls in love with a person who, for whatever reason, can’t stand the idea of their partner watching porn. Some people have sensitivi ties, others have insecurities; some on the Left have political objections, some on the Right have reli gious objections. Giving up porn is not something I would ever agree to, but a reasonable person might agree to stop watching porn (or pretend they’ve stopped watching porn) for someone they love. But if the person who insisted their partner stop watching porn later defines absolutely everything as porn — porn itself, non-pornographic photos, goodlooking people walking down the street, memes shared by friends — then it was never about the porn. It wasn’t about their insecurities or their politi cal objections or their precious religious beliefs. It was about control. And the worst thing about controlling people is that they’re never satisfied. No matter how much control a romantic partner gives up, it’s never enough. A controlling person’s demands escalate slowly at the start of a new rela tionship, when it’s still relatively easy for someone to end things. But once the relationship is harder to exit — once leases have been signed, marriages have been performed, children have been born — the controlling person’s demands not only escalate rapidly, they also tend to be become more arbitrary and irrational. (No memes? Really?) Your wife’s bullshit is intolerable, WATCHER, and you shouldn’t put up with it. Everyone is entitled to privacy, even married people. Likewise, everyone enjoys a zone of erotic autonomy, even married people. Experiences you fantasize about, when and how you masturbate, things you can safely do without violating your monogamous commitment and/or putting your partner at risk … not only shouldn’t someone try to take those things from you, it’s not in anyone’s power to take those things from you. We can’t police our partner’s fantasies. Ideally, our partners feel safe sharing their fantasies with us and involv ing us to the extent we can or wish to be involved. But we can’t prevent our partners from looking at whatever they want to look at, provided they’re considerate about when and where, and we cer tainly can’t stop our partners from thinking about whatever they want to think about, dick in hand or no dick in hand. Get a divorce. Or get better at telling your wife what she insists on hearing, doing whatever you want when you’re safely in the zone of erotic auton omy, and covering your tracks.

P.S. If the last couples counselor you saw didn’t turn to your wife at the end of your first session and say, “You’re a fucking psycho,” they sucked at their job.
Q: I am a gay man and I have a question about monkeypox. I have been seeing a male escort for several years and have built a friendly relationship with him. We both received the monkeypox vaccine in late June. My question is whether I should stop seeing him while monkeypox is still rampant. Some further background — he is still advertising for cli ents online and he’s told me that he’s still sexually active and doesn’t always use condoms. I know he is in a financially precarious situation, which is why he escorts, so I don’t blame him for doing what he must. It pays the bills. I honestly miss him and our intimate connection, but I’m afraid I’d contract mon keypox even though we’re both vaccinated. Should I take a pause in seeing him because he is still having sex with multiple people?
