» Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis says Disney ‘brought this upon themselves’ during Tucker Carlson visit A spokeswoman for Gov. Ron DeSantis called “fake news” on reports that Republican lawmakers are working on legislation to scale back a law rushed through earlier this year stripping Walt Disney of its unique self-governing power in Central Florida. “Fake news. @GovRonDeSantis doesn’t make ‘u-turns,’” DeSantis’ spokeswoman Taryn Fenske tweeted on Friday. Fenske’s post came in response to a tweet by former state Rep. Anthony Sabatini calling it “sad to see weak-kneed GOP politicians get overpowered on this.”

During a special session initially called to pass a redistricting plan, DeSantis directed lawmakers to add two punitive Disney-related measures after the entertainment company opposed a controversial new law, dubbed by opponents the “Don’t Say Gay” bill, that restricts education about gender identity and sexual orientation in public schools. Lawmakers approved a plan to eliminate the Reedy Creek Improvement District, which was created in 1967 and encompasses 38.5 miles in Osceola and Orange counties, including “the most magical place on earth.” The district has authority over such issues as land use and traditional functions of government including fire protection and wastewater services. The plan, signed by DeSantis in April, would dissolve the Reedy Creek district and five other districts across the state on June 1, 2023, though it would allow the Legislature to re-establish the districts before then. Financial Times and Reuters on Friday reported that changes in Disney leadership prompted Republican lawmakers in Florida to consider modifying the law.

Fenske didn’t immediately respond when asked if the governor would veto any changes to the law, but her tweet echoed comments DeSantis made in an appearance on Fox News Tuesday. Disney “brought this upon themselves. ... All we did was stand up for what was right,” DeSantis said. “And yes, they’re a big, powerful company, but you know what? We stand up for our folks and I don’t care what a Burbank-based California company says about our laws.” DeSantis’ remarks came hours after Walt Disney Company CEO Bob Iger reportedly told employees he was “sorry to see us dragged into that battle.”

» Florida Gators quarterback Jalen Kitna arrested on child pornography charges

Nineteen-year-old Florida Gators quarterback Jalen Kitna was arrested last week on several counts of possession and distribution of child pornography. The redshirt freshman and son of former NFL player Jon Kitna was released from custody in Gainesville after posting a $80,000 bond. According to Gainesville Police, Kitna shared two lewd images of underage girls on the messaging app Discord. On June 21, he shared an image of a prepubescent girl having sex with an adult man. He also shared an image of a similarly aged girl exposing herself.

When GPD searched Kitna’s electronic devices, they found two more instances of child pornography: photos of young girls showering. As a condition of his release to his parents, Kitna will not be allowed to access the internet of have unsupervised interactions with anyone under the age of 18. The images were flagged by Discord and Kitna’s account was suspended. The app then passed a tip on to the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children, who shared information with the Gainesville Police. According to a report from the Orlando Sentinel, Kitna appeared in court wearing a jail-issued gown. The outfit is an indication that they are concerned Kitna might harm himself with components of a typical jail outfit. Kitna could face up to 15 years in prison for each of two counts of distributing child pornography. The three further counts of possession carry a maximum five-year sentence under Florida law.

» Former Seminole County Tax Collector Joel Greenberg sentenced to 11 years in prison

Former Seminole County electee Joel Greenberg was sentenced to more than a decade after it was found he wildly abused his office. During his stint in Seminole County, he used his position to stalk political rivals, run cryptocurrency operations with government funds, defraud COVID-19 relief programs, impersonate a police officer and pay escorts for sex, including a woman who was underage at the time. A judge gave Greenberg

the highest recommended sentence, noting that Greenberg’s time in office was “truly outrageous” and a “violation of the public trust.” U.S. District Judge Gregory Presnell said that Greenberg’s case was a first in his 22 years on the bench. Though he could have faced much stiffer penalties, some leniency was granted due to Greenberg’s willingness to incriminate other criminal Florida politicians and their associates. Greenberg was at the center of an investigation into Congressman Matt Gaetz that appears to have stalled. His attorney says Greenberg cooperated with more than 20 ongoing investigations, several of which have resulted in charges. Greenberg apologized during the hearing, telling the judge he feels “remorse for what I have done.”

» Protesters challenge limits on protests inside Florida Capitol

Citing a potential infringement of free-speech rights and other constitutional liberties, dozens of people gathered to challenge a rule proposed by Gov. Ron DeSantis’ administration that would restrict the way protests can be conducted in Florida’s Capitol Complex. The state Department of Management Service’s proposal, in part, seeks to prohibit actions or displays that are “harmful” to children from taking place in the Capitol. “Because the Capitol Complex is often a destination for children learning about their state government, visual displays, sounds, and other actions that are harmful to minors” as defined in state law, “or which include gratuitous violence, or gore, are not permitted in any portion of the Capitol Complex that is not a traditional public forum,” the proposed rule said. Numerous individuals and representatives of advocacy groups that frequently hold demonstrations at the Capitol pushed back against the proposal during a public hearing Thursday. Rich Templin, director of politics and public policy for the Florida AFL-CIO, said he has spent decades in and around the Capitol and sees “absolutely no reason for a change in this rule.”

“In 20 years, I’ve never seen the process stopped or impeded for any significant amount of time — much to my chagrin, to be honest. I’ve never seen gore inside the Capitol Complex. I’ve never seen officers or staff hurt,” Templin said. Templin also said he has guided tours for elementary-school children of the Capitol building and never ran into the issues the proposed rule seeks to block.

Lewis Black returns to Florida, willingly

“Every day is brighter and more wonderful,” says Lewis Black, over the phone from his home in NYC. It was a passion for theater that first drew him there, after earning his MFA in drama at Yale. He didn’t get serious about comedy until he was well into his 30s, although he’d been dabbling for years. “Every day, the rainbow gets bigger. I wake up happy, and I ask myself, ‘How can I be happier?’ And I just get happier and happier. How am I? It’s unbelievable, the way that we live.”

He’s being at least somewhat sarcastic, because he lives a relatively charmed life, but Black certainly has his concerns. “We’re not doing well, I tell you that,” Black says. “And we better wake up.”

Clearly, neither of us are morning people, but it was a great session, nonetheless.

Black’s performance at the Hard Rock Live this Saturday is the second of three Florida shows scheduled for this tour. He’ll be in West Palm Beach the night before, and in Sarasota the night after. He is here on a mission of mercy, to bring joy to progressive audiences in the region who are currently reeling from the November election results and all the horrors implied thereby for our state, and perhaps the entire world.

Black’s 14th stand-up special, Thanks for Risking Your Life , was released in October 2020, but it was filmed that March, right at the start of the pandemic. Even a legend like him has struggled to regain the momentum of the pre-pandemic era.

“I lost a bit of my ritual during the pandemic,” Black says. “But basically, I wake up and turn on the TV, and I watch what passes for news in this country. Then I look at my phone for a few seconds, and then I have some coffee. What I spend a chunk of my time doing, really, is getting rid of email. ‘Nope, nope, nope, nope.’ And then I have to get rid of the spam, especially during this last election. It was appalling!”

Coastal elites have looked down on the South — Florida in particular — for years, but now their contempt is officially justified. “They think you’re a little crazy,” he says, on behalf of his fellow New Yorkers. “The ones that really have problems with authority are the ones that gravitate to authoritarians, and I find that just stunning.”

Lewis Niles Black, 74, was born in August 1948 in Washington D.C., a place that would, eventually, become the bane of his existence. He grew up in the suburbs of Silver Spring, Maryland, one of those places that has changed a lot over the years, but also not really at all. He was already a veteran of stage and screen before The Daily Show, but it was his tenure there that made him a household name.

Probably 99 percent of his fans first saw him in this setting, where he established a personal brand that will keep him plenty busy for the rest of his life. Those “Back in Black” segments actually predate the show’s golden period, when Jon Stewart was the host; Black got started there under original host Craig Kilborn, making him one of the main points of continuity between two very, very different versions of the show. Twentyfive years later, Black remains a featured player on the show, as recently as a month ago.

Black’s style is situated in that long tradition of political comedy, a tradition built around legends like Mort Sahl, Shelley Berman, Lenny Bruce, George Carlin, Bill Hicks and more. He doesn’t dance around subjects, or couch his commentary in the camouflage of “satire.” Instead he dives in, full-throated at full speed, with a verbal style that reflects the anger and outrage of a sensible man forced to live through an era of American history that makes absolutely no sense. If anything, his style is like a cross between Jello Biafra and Sam Kinison.

The business of comedy has changed dramatically since Black first blew up, not just in terms of content, but also in terms

of logistics. New comedians face an array of challenges, not least of which is an overall glut of talent. “On the upside, there’s all sorts of ways to get your face out there,” says Black. “Social media gives you a certain amount of freedom to present yourself to the public. The folks who get that, move faster.”

Following these shows, Black will give fans the chance to participate in his trademark “The Rant Is Due” segments, where they have the chance to vent about things

that are bothering them, of which there is surely much right now.

“I’m like the town crier,” concludes Black. “I’m trying to keep my sense of humor, but a lot of people have lost theirs. Some people are too awake, and some people are too asleep, and they both have a certain grip on their political parties.” The radicals don’t seem to be losing their grip anytime soon, but their shenanigans just might make Lewis Black lose his own.

For those of us who don’t look forward all year to the Hallmark Channel’s December lineup, the Ren Theatre’s naughty Office Holiday Party Musical Extravaganza Show

Christmas Eve is just over a fortnight away, and Central Florida’s theme parks and theaters are fully saturated with holiday happenings. In just the past few weeks, I’ve tried getting into the seasonal spirit by witnessing the chilly construction of Gaylord Palms’ spectacular Ice! walk-through display, which returned this year with sub-zero scenes from Dr. Seuss’ How The Grinch Stole Christmas; and also by attending Universal Orlando’s musical adaptation of that same story, which is my second-favorite component of that resort’s winter festivities, following CityWalk’s phenomenal new midcentury mod Green & Red Coconut Club. I’ve snapped a selfie under the towering tree in Town Square at Disney’s Magic Kingdom, and watched social media sensation Lindsey Stirling soar above the Dr. Phillips Center’s Walt Disney stage while sawing her violin to electrified hymns as her sold-out audience shrieked in rapture.

Each of these yuletide experiences was enjoyable taken individually. But unless you’re the type of person who looks forward all year to the Hallmark Channel’s December lineup, digesting so much uplifting inspirational entertainment in rapid succession can have a similar effect to eating an eggnog-soaked fruitcake topped with sugarplums. So, where can a dyspeptic critic like myself enjoy some snarky secular socializing with just a hint of schmaltz? It turns out that Donald Rupe’s Renaissance Theater (rentheatre.com) had exactly the naughty anti-nativity I was seeking, in the sophomore outing of their signature seasonal show, The Office Holiday Party Musical Extravaganza Show, running through Dec. 23. Many theatergoers were introduced to “The Ren” last spring when it hosted two venues for the Orlando Fringe Festival, but the location has become most notable for the immersive shows created by Rupe, e.g. Halloween’s Nosferatu After being impressed by the first edition in

2021, I was even more thrilled by the evolution of this October’s interactive vampire tale, from the disorienting variety of haunting environments to explore to the markedly more realistic blood used during its orgiastic finale. However, I still felt that the show could have benefited from live original music and a clearer story, and I wished the entire experience was more accessible to attendees with mobility issues.

It seems that Santa heard my wish, because this year’s revamped return of The Office Holiday Party Musical Extravaganza Show turned out to be everything I asked for, wrapped with a bow.

The room at the Ren which recently held creepy circus tents has been transformed into the Orlando branch of Gripp & Pfister, whose employees are enjoying a final blowout before corporate downsizing banishes them to Kissimmee. Slap on a “Hello” name tag (with a randomly assigned moniker), grab a cookie or cocktail from the bar (Santa’s Sack packs a deceptively strong punch), and secure a swivel chair with a view of the stage as your arriving “co-workers” roam the room sharing their gossipy backstories.

Before long, the 16-member ensemble launches into the first of a dozen fully formed musical numbers lampooning iconic elements of awkward workplace get-togethers, like “white elephant” gift exchanges, cheesy team-building ritual dances and alcoholfueled unprofessionalism. Those subjects might sound like Christmas clichés, but the skilled improvisers embodying these over-thetop characters — including drunken divorcee Deborah (Kristie Geng), incoherent sexpot Paris Anna Nicole (Yan Diaz) and weed-addled

Leslie (Devin Skorupski) — make this mistletoe mockery feel as refreshingly intimate and original as it is outrageously hilarious.

Rupe’s pop-pastiche songs are performed by a powerful four-piece band led by arranger Jason M. Bailey, and are as well-crafted and tuneful as anything in his acclaimed musical From Here, which is being performed off-Broadway early next year.

Highlights include Karen’s (Kamryn C. Burton) ironic toast to hypocritical diversity; Finnigan’s (Blake Aburn) and Faith’s (Michelle Coben) double entendre-stuffed sanctimonious guitar sermon; and Sheila’s (Melissa Bibliowicz) breathless Hanukkah patter song, which brought the audience to its feet for the biggest Hora I’ve danced since my cousin’s Orthodox wedding.

Smartly, it isn’t all just played for laughs, with some unexpectedly emotional ballads for overlooked Ed (David Lowe) and Eileen (Amy Sue Hardy), the antagonist from the head office. And although the deus ex denouements of some plotlines are predictable, that doesn’t stop them from being satisfying. My only remaining wish is that the booming sound system had allowed me to understand Rupe’s witty lyrics better.

Ultimately, The Office Holiday Party Musical Extravaganza Show is a first-rate dinner show minus the dinner, and despite my hard-earned ambivalence towards audience participation, the Ren’s cast did a remarkable job of roping me into their raucous festivities. It’s been over a decade since I worked in a cubicle, but I’d consider returning to a desk job if every office holiday party were this much fun.

Bad As’s Burgers in Curry Ford West stuffs Australian wagyu patties into its napkinshredding handhelds

Wagyu! Wagyu! Everywhere wagyu! Especially Australian wagyu, which isn’t nearly as luscious or marbled (or expensive) as actual Japanese wagyu, but has its fair share of buttery richness that any beefatarian can appreciate. Those beefatarians include John Collazo, the affable gent behind Bad As’s Sandwiches, Collazo’s’ Grit’s ’N’ Gr’avy, The Possessive House of Pork, and his ultramodern, one-seat, multicourse chef’s tasting concept, ApostroFeed. The last three may or may not be actual concepts, but Bad As’s Burgers, subject of this dripping assessment, certainly is.

of Aussie wag stacked between house-baked, sesame-specked, butter brioche buns. With apologies to Dr. Tongue (RIP John Candy), it’s clear Collazo is out to blow the arteries out of the whole “better burger” movement with this 3D House of Beef.

A pal and I thrust a trio of burgers into our faces on our memorable first visit to the Curry Ford West joint.

First was “The Marley” ($16), sporting a mix of roasted pineapple and jerk mayo layered with caramelized onions and gooey gouda. The sweet and spicy island vibe in between those spongy drums really got us into a rhythm. “The Professional” ($17) pays homage to the French dip, with melted gruyère and seasonal mushrooms (oyster, hen of the woods and cremini). The burger comes cut in half, making dips into the jus all the easier.

But “The Warbucks” ($24) is the big daddy of them all. Crispy onion and arugula aside, it was the foie gras pâté and trufflemanchego cream that had us wondering if the sun would come out in our tomorrow. The thing is rich, but it isn’t spoiled rich with gold leaf or caviar or a burger diaper made of $100 bills.

Which brings me to the elephant in the room — the prices. You’ll notice that these burgers don’t come cheap. But you should know that a single-patty burger here starts at $8 – about the same price as a burger at Shake Shack. A drink and fries (fried in beef tallow) costs an extra $3.99; $6.99 for fries and a shake. And those shakes are worth a shake — try the strawberry shortcake fashioned from strawberry compote and house-made shortbread or the “American Pie” with caramel apple and graham-cracker crumbs. Also worth a slurp is the French onion soup ($8), which may seem like an odd offering at a burger house, until you realize the broth is just as beefy as anything else served here.

I had to make a return trip to sample the newest creation, dubbed “The Firestarter” ($16) and packing housemade kimchi, jalapeños, green chili sauce and havarti cheese. Did it combust in my mouth and blow my yap into oblivion? No. Did that make it a bad bad as’s burger? Also no. It was a juicy, medium-well, double-pattied napkin shredder, just like the rest of the Australian wagyu burgers I scarfed. And no matter the price –$8, $16 or $24 — scarf you should.

As my Aussie friend likes to say, wrap your laughing gear ’round that.

The Muppet Christmas Carol Extended Edition — The melancholic number “When Love Has Gone” has been restored to the Muppets’ 1992 holiday classic, in a finallycomplete version that’s hitting streaming a week after bowing in theaters. Night at the Museum: Kahmunrah Rises Again — You know a franchise has really given up the ghost when its fourth installment is an animated cartoon that’s going straight to streaming and doesn’t have any of the original stars in its voice cast. Thank God that Bob Iger, who greenlighted this turkey, isn’t around any more to … oh! Hi, Bob. Like what we’ve done with the place? (Disney+)

Retrograde — National Geographic’s documentary filmmaking arm captures the final nine months of America’s two-decade folly in Afghanistan. Because as we all know, that’s the only part that matters. The Happy Fits bring their vibrant new indie sound to Orlando

It seems only fitting that a group dubbed “that fruit band” by fans is returning to the orange capital of the world as part of their latest tour.

With a bold modern rock sound that packs a powerful yet comforting punch, the Happy Fits’ newest album, Under the Shade of Green, takes their already catchy tunes to an entirely new level of punchy energy.

The New Jersey trio — cellist Calvin Langman, guitarist Ross Monteith and drummer Luke Davis — found that writing this new album gave them a chance to break out of their creative comfort zones and explore new lyrical themes and sounds.

“I think a lot of our earlier work was very coming-of-age and it was kind of like a diary of growing up between the years of 16 and 23,” says Langman. “Over the pandemic, there were just a lot of major global events that really

opened up our eyes to realizing that the world was a lot bigger than the world of Pittstown, New Jersey, that we grew up in.”

Each member of Happy Fits initially found their passion for music in their youth: Davis discovering his interest in drumming through hours playing Rock Band and Guitar Hero; Monteith signing up for guitar lessons alongside his older brother and immediately thinking it was “the coolest thing”; and Langman transforming his childhood cello lessons into an unlikely gateway into the rock world.

“Basically, I saw two cellos on YouTube playing ‘Welcome to the Jungle’ and I was like, I want to play rock cello. That’s what I want to do,” remembers Langman.

After their first EP hit streaming platforms, Langman realized that people were responding well to the strings. What initially wasn’t intended to be a big release soon

enough made the Happy Fits a force to be reckoned with on the indie-rock scene. Now a recognizable staple of their sound, Langman’s cello adds an entirely new layer of warmth to each tune.

Davis thinks that it’s important to the band that their songs translate well onstage and fans never feel like there’s something missing from a live performance. While this initially meant that the trio would stick to strictly cello, guitar and drums on their recordings as well, some experimentation over the years provided an opportunity for Happy Fits to branch out and evolve their sound both in the studio and on the stage.

“That became the evolution of the live sound, with Calvin adding pedals to his cello so he could have octaves, as well as Ross, so there was that void being filled in a lot of ways,” says Davis.

With fan-favorite songs as animated as “Too Late” or “Hold Me Down” from previous albums having raised fans’ expectations, the band felt that Under the Shade of Green needed to deliver with new material that was just “as big and loud” as possible.

“The first two albums, we only had six weeks to record them, but this most recent album, Under the Shade of Green, we had six months. It was the first opportunity that we really got to utilize our time as much as possible to make the songs sound as huge as possible,” says Davis.

Monteith says that “In the Lobby” is one of the more fun numbers to perform live in terms of crowd interaction. The band’s stage manager adorns Monteith with a bucket hat and sunglasses for this song, a tongue-in-cheek visual play on the lives and behaviors of the rich and famous.

“At the end of the song, I run offstage and I shoot a money gun into the crowd filled with big pineapple dollar bills,” Monteith says. “Some of them actually have coupons for our merch in it, so it’s a fun item for people to take home, but then if they get a lucky one they get a free T-shirt.”

The pineapple is the Happy Fits’ newest featured fruit, serving as the cover image for Under the Shade of Green and following the grapefruit adorning the cover of their 2020 album, What Could Be Better. What started as a silly pun with a banana on the cover of their 2016 EP, Awfully Apeelin’, became a full-blown tradition that now yields a deeper meaning in the lyrics and theme of each release.

“I felt like it was a powerful image to have the pineapple be made out of money and also on fire because it’s kind of a metaphor for how money is destroying the world right now and just fueling global warming,” says Langman.

Under the Shade of Green allowed the Happy Fits to experiment with new energies, grooves and sounds (and yes, a new fruit). Fiery with urgency and as bright as a flame, this new album adds a formidable array of new potential inclusions to the band’s already-stacked set list. Whether you “Dance Alone” or with friends — you will be dancing either way.

“We really took the time with these songs not necessarily worrying about how it’s going to translate, we can figure that out now because we have the tools and the team to achieve that,” says Davis. “A lot more harmonies and multiple guitar tracks and multiple cello tracks and bass synth. … We went from the garage indie band feel to a more refined rock band.”

Grand Buffet, DJ Jester the Filipino Fist: Anyone who was part of the buzzing and fertile Orlando indie and hip-hop scenes in the 2000s can attest to the left-field genius of alt-rap heroes Grand Buffet. Although they were actually from Pittsburgh, they were one of the flagship acts on Fighting Records — one of the leading Orlando indie labels of that era — and had ties so deep here that they were treated like local royalty. But it’s not that Grand Buffet simply moved on once Fighting folded in the late 2000; they themselves essentially went dark. 2008’s King Vision on Fighting Records was their last album, and the duo made increasingly fewer appearances as the years went on.

Now, after being totally MIA from Orlando for eons, two of the key figures from Fighting Records — John Youngman and Mor Krivinsky — are teaming up again to bring Grand Buffet back to their old adopted stomping grounds. Come see why their sharp blend of humor, wit and rhyme ruled the Orlando underground for years.

454, Pig the Gemini, Three Knee Deep, The Gas: Count rapper-producer 454 among the latest class of ascendant homegrown talents. The Longwood skater kid born Willie Wilson first distinguished himself as a seriously gifted street shredder sick enough to be featured in TransWorld Skateboarding (RIP). Since moving to New York, he’s quickly making a hot name for himself as a musician. With a psychedelic rap style that’s both surreal and utterly now, he’s racked up a heavyweight list of fans-turned-collaborators like Denzel Curry and Frank Ocean. Now that he’s coming up with tons of underground velocity, the young hotshot will be making a big homecoming with his first headlining show here. Go give this shooting star some due hometown love. Influenced by acts like Candlemass, Witchfinder General, Pentagram, Trouble and Sabbath, L.A.’s Early Moods are the strapping young studs in the stable of premier heavy label Riding Easy Records. A perfect slab of classic doom, their eponymous debut album landed just this past summer and proved Early Moods as an instant contender who are laying it on like few can. It’s a marvelously focused introduction that’s the absolute apotheosis of vintage doom. First Jason: OK, so this is the band project of Ari Lehman, who happened to be the first actor to play a young, pre-hockey mask Jason Voorhees in the original Friday the 13th. What First Jason is not, however, is some unintentionally terrible Corey Feldman deal. Rather than a former child actor’s attempt at earnest pop music, First Jason are a metal band that, as the none-too-subtle name signals, leans all the way in on the frontman’s unique claim in pop-culture history. Their whole schtick drips with slasher-flick camp and tons of Friday the 13th allusions. And the fact that a goddamn keytar is front and center should seal the deal on this as a must-see spectacle. As classic rock uneasily segues into its inevitable geriatric decline, there are two different stories being told, and both are true. One is about the rarified handful of Boomer icons selling off the rights to their publishing, recordings and even likenesses to venture capitalists for many multiple millions of dollars. The other story is more timeless: road-dogging rockers grinding out a living on the small theater/ large club circuit, despite not having graced even the lowest rungs of a sales chart since the time when gas cost one buck a gallon. Guitarist Pat Travers was the guitar god for “real rockers” in the late ’70s and early ’80s, thanks both to his burly, bashed-out blues riffage and ridiculously anthemic rock radio staples like “Boom Boom (Out Go the Lights)” and “Snortin’ Whiskey.” Those two songs alone have made Travers an indelible presence on your favorite biker bar’s TouchTunes, but haven’t quite earned him the payout he justly deserves. So, he’s out on the road with fellow semi-legends Outlaws, the Tampa Southern rockers who your uncle sings along with whenever “Green Grass and High Tides” and “There Goes Another Love Song” show up on satellite radio. Nigerian singer and producer Burna Boy is bringing his “Love, Damini” tour to Orlando just in time for some holiday fun. The

Grammy-winning artist has a diverse musical palette, with songs mixing reggae, dancehall, Afrobeat and pop. With a career spanning over a decade, his most prominent collaborations include work with Beyoncé, Ed Sheeran, Sam Smith and a feature on the recent Black Panther: Wakanda Forever soundtrack. Sharing the name of his tour, Burna Boy’s newest album gives a sonic glimpse into the mind and heart of the artist in his most heartfelt manner to date. This eye-popping booking at Timucua Arts Foundation comes courtesy of Modern Music Movement and, mere days away, we’re still having trouble believing the engagement is a reality. Unpredictable and influential electronic musician and composer JG Thirlwell will play an ambitious new solo work, Silver Mantis, in the confines of the Timucua house show space. Depending on your aesthetic inclinations, you may know Thirlwell best from his seminal and riotous industrial project Foetus and all of its many offshoots — Scraping Foetus Off the Wheel, You’ve Got Foetus on Your Breath, etc. — which expertly mixed his compositional ambitions with synth-punk attitude and no doubt had a young Trent Reznor furiously scribbling notes. Or you may know him as the bombastic composer behind scores for cutting-edge animated shows like The Venture Bros. and Archer. Or if you’re particularly out on the fringes, you probably heard

(Ain’t that the way.) The Shining (Backwards and Forwards)

Everyone’s heard of the “Dark Side of the Rainbow” or “the Wizard of Floyd” — the enduring high-dea that Pink Floyd’s psych opus Dark Side of the Moon album syncs perfectly to Technicolor brainwarp The Wizard of Oz, if you hit play on the album at the same moment as the MGM lion’s third roar. (This synchronicity trick also works uncannily well with every Wu-Tang album and every kung-fu movie. Try it.) While the effect is an example of apophenia, not proof that Roger Waters had a secret fixation on Judy Garland, it’s undeniably entertaining to see the alignments your brain can create when prompted. When, in a similar vein, an acquaintance opined to Brooklyn musician John Fell Ryan that “The Shining is a film meant to be watched both forwards and backwards,” Ryan took the assignment literally. From that tossed-off utterance he and filmmaker Akiva Saunders created a conceptual mindfuck, a visual tesseract, a kaleidoscopic

poem: two projections of The Shining superimposed on the same screen, overlaying the ratcheting dread of the film’s beginning with the horrors of its dénouement. Kontravoid

Given our well-documented love of both haunted facewear and dark synth, it’s only natural that the co-headlining “Meeting of the Masks” tour between Kontravoid and Lunacy would have us over the moon. Philadelphia’s Lunacy makes some of the iciest, most emotionless minimal synth we’ve ever heard, rendered all the more unsettling by a full-head mask that obscures any mode of facial expression. Meanwhile, Los Angeles’ Kontravoid wears a disguise likely plucked from a halffinished Famous Monsters how-to magazine, but his music is finely honed and eerie dance music, like New Order trapped in Waxwork. Both acts played here last spring on the same night but at different venues so if you’ve been afflicted by FOMO since then, redemption is nigh. Put on by the good people of Panic! Underground, the night will be bookended by a set from Orlando EBM blood-drinker Mother Juno and the DJs of Panic holding the dance floor in their thrall. 9 p.m., Iron Cow, 2438 E.
