» Disney expands lawsuit against DeSantis after he signs a bill targeting the company

As the entertainment company remains embroiled in an increasingly fiery power battle with the state, Disney has expanded its federal lawsuit against Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis. After DeSantis and his allies made legal moves to dissolve a 30-year-old agreement between Disney and the state, Disney’s lawyers are biting back; the legal team Monday revamped their already-filed lawsuit with the governor’s own comments, alleging he is punishing Disney for opposing Florida’s so-called “Don’t Say Gay” law. The company’s lawyers have called the governor’s actions evidence of a “targeted campaign of government retaliation.” The expanded lawsuit comes specifically in response to two bills targeted at Disney and passed by Florida legislators last week, one already signed by DeSantis. The two bills include one to overturn Disney’s development agreement and one to hand over monorail inspections to the state, which “was precision-engineered to target Disney alone,” the lawsuit says.“Without hesitation or prompt, Gov. DeSantis admitted: ‘[T]his all started, of course, with our parents’ rights bill,’” the amended lawsuit quotes DeSantis as saying. The lawsuit also asks the courts to invalidate the bill DeSantis signed Friday, which seeks to nullify Disney’s development agreements with the Reedy Creek Improvement District.

» Florida unions fight back after DeSantis signs ‘union busting’ bill into law

Despite overwhelming opposition from Florida unions (not just the ones representing teachers and faculty), DeSantis signed into law last week a bill that’s designed to defund public sector unions, and make it harder for them to function. Unions representing cops, firefighters, probation and correctional officers — which generally endorse Republicans like DeSantis — are largely exempted. If you read our previous reporting, you know this is a bill that Republicans have been trying to pass since at least 2011. This year, it was largely interpreted as an attack on teachers unions, which often endorse Democrats and which have strongly opposed DeSantis’ “anti-woke” agenda. Perhaps it’s no surprise, then, that the Florida Education Association (the statewide teachers union), has filed a lawsuit against the state over the law, arguing it’s unconstitutional. The law, effective July 1, bans payroll deductions of union dues — posing a logistical nightmare — and requires unions to maintain a participation rate of at least 60% of all eligible employees or risk facing decertification. A couple of AFSCME locals in South Florida also filed a lawsuit on similar grounds. Multiple educators told Orlando Weekly their unions have been proactive in preparing for the new law, but it’s also exacerbating issues they’ve already had (e.g. teacher retention) without addressing real issues in classrooms (e.g. large class sizes, students’ mental health). The president of SEIU’s Florida Public Sector Union, which represents city of Orlando employees, said any attempt by Republicans to frame this as “pro-union” or pro-worker is “bullshit.”

» DeSantis also signs bill banning students from using TikTok in schools

Saying that social media does “more harm than good,” DeSantis signed education changes last week (at the same time as the anti-union bill) that bar students from using cell phones during class time and restrict the use of TikTok on school grounds. He also signed bills creating a “Teachers’ Bill of Rights” and imposing eight-year term limits on school-board members. The social-media measure prohibits the use of TikTok on devices owned by school districts and through internet access provided by districts. Another bill bars access to TikTok on state-owned wireless networks. The law, set to take effect in July, also seeks to prevent students from using cell phones and other wireless devices during “instructional time.” Under the measure, cell phones can’t be used during lessons unless “expressly directed by a teacher solely for educational purposes.” The “Teachers Bill of Rights” law spells out various rights of teachers, including a right to “control and discipline” students. The measure also includes a process in which teachers could challenge certain directives from school districts or school administrators.

» Another new Florida law blocks credit card companies from tracking gun sales

DeSantis last week signed into law a bill, effective July 1, that will prevent credit-card companies from using a separate “merchant category code” for sales at gun businesses in Florida. Similar four-digit codes are already used to separate purchases and collect data from places such as grocery stores, gas stations, restaurants and bookstores. Last year,

Visa, Mastercard and American Express announced plans to categorize gun-shop sales. But after Republican pushback in several states, the plans have been paused. Equality Florida press secretary and Pulse survivor Brandon Wolf pointed out on Twitter that the Pulse nightclub shooter in 2016 used credit cards to buy $26,000 worth of guns and ammunition just days before fatally shooting 49 people and wounding 53 others. “Merchant codes have been used for decades to flag suspicious purchases,” Wolf wrote, quote-tweeting a post by DeSantis about the bill signing. “All you did was make it harder for law enforcement to do their jobs.”

» Orlando Publix bakery refused to put the words ‘trans’ on a cake Peer Support Space founders Yasmin Flasterstein and Dandelion Hill say that the bakery at the Publix on Colonial Drive refused to put the word “trans” on a cake they ordered for a “Spread Trans Joy” event last month. The bakery told them it was against corporate policy for them to put “trans” on the cake, adding (as if it were any sort of consolation) that “Black Lives Matter” was also considered a no-go. Cool. The bakery offered to instead write “People deserve joy,” leaving space for the extra word and providing icing to the pair so they could add “trans” themselves afterward. Flasterstein took to social media to express their outrage at the incident. It blew up, catching the eye of a spokesperson for Publix corporate, who told them the local Publix should have put the message on the cake and that doing so would not have been against corporate policy. Then again, hindsight is 20/20 and this is the same company that throws money at the same Republicans who usher in anti-LGBTQ policies, so make of that what you will.

» Orlando photographer will be offering free gender-affirming portraits for trans folks this summer

OK, to wrap up with something more wholesome: As trans Floridians continue to face discriminatory legislation and political targeting, one local artist is aiming to bring support through photography. Orlando-based photographer Harry Aaron is launching truID, a series of gender-affirming portraits to help support Florida’s trans communities this summer. Aaron will be setting up a photoshoot on June 3 in Orlando, and will also hold events in Tampa (June 4) and Miami (June 10). The portraits will be pay-what-youcan, and the event will include services by hair stylists, makeup artists and barbers, all working on a donation basis. Registration for the event (which is required in order to receive the location) can be found at trueidproject.org.

UNDERSTAFFED AND OVERWHELMED

The Hospital Corporation of America frequently faces allegations of understaffing; employees of HCA Osceola in Kissimmee say their employer puts profits over people

Agroup of healthcare workers and community members on Wednesday rallied outside HCA Florida Osceola Hospital in Kissimmee to share their concerns about working conditions within the facility.

Hospital employees, represented by the 1199 Service Employees International Union, say staffing continues to remain at “crisis” levels, to the detriment of patient safety, health outcomes and hospital staff.

“Within the last few weeks, we’ve had situations where we have the ER overwhelmed with ICU patients,” said Vaughn Benton, a clinical pharmacist who’s worked at the Osceola hospital for five years. “But, because we don’t have enough nursing staff, or enough staff in general to place them into ICU, they just closed the ICU down,” he said.

A January report published by SEIU found that staffing ratios at HCA hospitals, located in 20 states nationwide, were 30% lower than national averages. In Florida, weighted staffing ratios were 32% lower than state averages for other hospitals, according to data obtained by the union.

Worker pay, staffing levels and workplace protections are key issues on the minds of staff at the hospital, operated by the Hospital Corporation of America, the United States’ largest for-profit health system.

Jennifer Parker, a hospital employee of 23 years, said HCA has been cutting their hours, despite the short-staffing, and sending workers home.

“We all have bills to pay, we all have families to feed, and how can we feed those families if they’re not paying us what we should get paid?” asked Parker.

“The patients are suffering,” she added.

PROFITS OVER PEOPLE

HCA Healthcare, the nation’s largest healthcare system, owns and operates over 180 hospitals nationwide, with 46 of those located in Florida.

According to a January financial report, HCA Healthcare reaped $5.6 billion in net profits last year, and $7 billion the year before that.

The company’s CEO since 2019, Sam Hazen, saw his total compensation dip somewhat last year, admittedly, from $20.6 million in 2021, to a measly $14.6 million in 2021.

Hazen’s 2021 earnings were equal to 368 times the median employee’s pay, according to a corporate tracker from the AFL-CIO.

Benton said it’s “sad and unfortunate” that, as it is, hospital staff can earn more than they do currently by jumping ship to work at McDonald’s, for instance, or a nearby restaurant. “[They can] get paid more to deliver a pizza than they get paid to deliver medications to your family member.”

Benton told Orlando Weekly that some of the lowest-paid workers at the hospital earn as little as $12 per hour.

In Osceola County, where the hospital’s located, a living wage is an estimated $18.85 per hour for a single adult with no children, or $25.38 for a household with two working adults and two children.

But change could be coming.

The workers’ labor union, 1199 SEIU, is in ongoing negotiations for a new union contract with HCA that will cover 10,000 certified nursing assistants, dietary aides, occupation-

al therapists and other hospital staff at the Osceola facility and 18 other HCA-affiliated medical centers across Florida. About 800 employees at HCA Florida Osceola alone will be covered, according to Roxey Nelson, executive vice president of 1199 SEIU United Healthcare Workers East.

Meanwhile, registered nurses at the Osceola hospital are represented by National Nurses United, a trade union boasting a membership of nearly 225,000 nationwide that exclusively represents RNs.

Back in December, registered nurses protested HCA’s plans to shutter its nursery unit at the hospital, in favor of what’s known as a “rooming-in” model.

Hospital executives said this move to house babies and mothers together, instead of separating them at birth, would align the hospital with evidence-based practices that can improve mother-infant bonding.

But nurses feared it would put patients at risk.

“The newborn nursery and its staff provide essential services that patients need — especially our high-risk population,” Cassandra Gomes, a RN, told Spectrum News 13 at the time. “Those patients in particular need more services, not less.”

THE RISKS OF UNDERSTAFFING

While the registered nurses union was not part of the rally on Wednesday, both unions have called out HCA for chronic understaffing, which they say is putting both patients and staff at risk.

And they have the receipts.

In 2019, for instance, the family of a former HCA Florida Osceola Hospital patient sued the hospital after the patient died “as a result of the severe anoxic brain injury” she received following ovarian cyst surgery, according to SEIU’s report.

That same year, a patient of HCA Florida Citrus Hospital in Citrus County died after medical technicians — working short-staffed — failed to monitor the patient’s “life-threatening heart rhythm change,” with a communication delay between themselves and nursing staff.

Earlier this year, U.S. Sen. Marco Rubio and U.S. Rep. Gus Bilirakis wrote a letter to the CEO of an HCA hospital in Pasco County, “in response to troubling allegations of unsanitary and unsafe practices” that were reported by NBC News.

“As a leading healthcare provider in the community and a recipient of American taxpayer dollars, it is critical that HCA Florida Bayonet Point prioritizes the health and safety of their patients and staff and is transparent about these standards with the public,” the letter reads, with the signatures of both Republican members of U.S. Congress.

1199 SEIU says that understaffing saves HCA billions of dollars per year, even as the hospital system continues to expand throughout Central Florida.

HCA in January, for instance, broke ground on a $12 million dollar ER in Lee Vista, near the Orlando International Airport. An independent ER in St. Cloud — a $15.5 million dollar expansion of HCA Florida Osceola Hospital — is also in the works.

“We have this brand-new lobby, which costs millions of dollars, but we don’t even have technology to send medi-

cations to every unit on the floor as quickly as possible,” Benton, an evening-shift pharmacist, told Orlando Weekly of his hospital.

“There are people who have to physically deliver medications throughout this hospital, because they [HCA] refuse to put money into the things that actually improve safety and quality, as opposed to the things that make them look good,” he added.

Staffing within his unit, and across the hospital, he said, only got worse during the pandemic.

Today, there’s just one pharmacist for the hospital’s 400bed trauma center, he said. “There is one pharmacist taking care of this entire hospital from 7 at night to 7 in the morning.”

Maria Campbell, a patient technician at HCA Florida Osceola Hospital, said she believes that “profit is being put over patients,” as well as over their care and safety.

Campbell said she’d like to give the care to patients that she would want for herself or her loved ones, “But at this point, we can’t,” she said. “Our hands are tied.”

State Sen. Victor Torres, a Democrat and vocal proponent of organized labor, told workers at the Wednesday rally that he plans to meet with the hospital administration and open a dialogue.

“How can you not provide for your workers? How can you cut their hours in a time where inflation is so high?” said Torres, a former union cop from New York and former bus driver.

“I cannot make promises,” he admitted candidly. “But I can fight for you.”

Workers at other HCA hospitals in Florida this week also rallied to raise the alarm on chronic understaffing, and how it can lead to unsafe patient conditions.

The rallies come during National Nurses & Hospital Week, as well as just one day after Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis signed into law a bill designed to undercut the state’s public sector unions, with exemptions for unions representing cops, firefighters, and corrections staff.

Hospital staff hope, if they stand together united, HCA will be forced to meaningfully address their concerns, not just for themselves and their families, but for the community that turns to them for care.

“Ultimately, if we stand together and we’re all saying the same things, there’s nothing that can be ignored, and no one can be singled out,” said Benton.

THE HOSPITAL’S RESPONSE

HCA Florida Healthcare Public Relations Director Trip Farmer shared the following statement with Orlando Weekly when asked about Wednesday’s rally and concerns voiced by the Osceola hospital’s employees:

“Today’s demonstration is part of this labor union’s normal tactics during collective bargaining, which happens every three years at HCA Florida Osceola Hospital. During those negotiations, our goal is the same: to secure a fair agreement that continues to support a culture of colleague safety, care excellence and compassion.

“We strongly disagree with SEIU’s allegations. Our staffing is safe, appropriate, and in line with other community hospitals and applicable regulations, and we are proud that Osceola has been recognized by Healthgrades for being among the Top 5% in the nation for patient safety in 2022 and 2023. This union has a history of attacking and bullying community hospitals with misleading information and staged events designed to garner media coverage.”

OCEAN OF SOUND

The biggest and best concerts coming our way this summer

As Kim Deal once tunefully opined, “Summer is ready, if you are.” Well, we’re not because it’s going to be brutally hot and there will more than likely be a bunch of hurricanes. But hey, at least the concert calendar looks big-fancy-city level impressive! So throw your cares to the wind, stop doom-scrolling news about our cruel joke of a state government (for a sec) and soak your ears in favored sounds.

Whether you like Paramore, Stevie Nicks, Death Grips, the Cavalera brothers, Dresden Dolls, black midi, Danny Brown or even Godflesh (or all of the above? you absolute champion) — you’re in luck this summer.

LAST SPLASH

Looking for a place to splash? Here are some public pools to dip your toes in

With Central Florida humidity and temperatures inching up higher as summer grows near, it’s essential to find ways to take a break from the blazing heat. Luckily, the greater Orlando area has a variety of places for you to make a big splash without driving all the way out to your nearest beach. (Or buying a pool, who even has that money?) We’ve compiled a list of some of the best places to swim this summer if you don’t have a pool and want a fun day out. If you’re still looking for more options on top of those offered in this list, check out the Find a Pool page on the City of Orlando’s website.

Orlando Watersports Complex Aquapark

8615 Florida Rock Road; 407-801-7977; orlandowatersports.com

Thrill-seekers don’t need to be floating in the waves to escape the heat — just check out the Orlando Watersports Complex. This inflatable aquapark welcomes adventurers 6 years old and up who are looking for a fun way to spend their afternoon, testing their limits and trying not to get bounced off into the water below. Pricing varies by the hour, but starts at $30 a person with a 10% discount for individual bookings purchased through their website.

Sheraton Orlando Lake Buena Vista Resort

12205 S. Apopka Vineland Road; 407-2390444; resortpass.com

Located minutes from Walt Disney World, the Sheraton offers two pools, a waterslide, hot tub areas, outdoor food and drink service and lawn games to any families looking to take a quick day-cation in the sun. Adult day passes start at $20 and children get in free.

Holiday Inn Resort Orlando Suites — Waterpark

14500 Continental Gateway Drive; 407-3875437; resortpass.com

While this Holiday Inn may seem plain

from the outside, a world of fun is waiting at the waterpark on the inside. What used to be the much-missed Nickelodeon Hotel is still a fun place for children to have fun sliding down multiple waterslides, playing with interactive water toys and waiting for the giant water bucket to pour over the play area. (Don’t worry, there are two jacuzzis and a more casual swimming pool on the property as well.) Day passes start at $35 for children and $45 for adults.

Hilton Orlando

6001 Destination Parkway; 407-313-4300; resortpass.com

Arguably, there’s no better way to relax on a hot day than floating down a lazy river. If this sounds like the ideal scenario to you, check out the Hilton Orlando, which also includes a larger pool area complete with waterslides, whirlpools, a kid’s play area and poolside service. Day passes start at $25 for adults and $15 for children (infants get in free).

Bob Makinson Aquatic Center

2204 Denn John Lane, Kissimmee; 407-8707665; kissimmee.gov

The Bob Makinson Aquatic Center has all you need for a fun family day at the pool. With entry costing a mere $5 (2-yearolds and under are free), patrons have access to the swimming lanes, diving boards, a children’s play area, concessions, a locker area and even a waterslide. The pool will reopen for the summer season on Memorial Day weekend.

Oviedo Aquatic Center

148 Oviedo Blvd., Oviedo; 407-971-5565; cityofoviedo.net

The Oviedo gymnasium and aquatic facility is a combination recreation facility equipped not only with multiple pools, but also a full gymnasium, rockclimbing walls, basketball courts and a playground, among other features. It’s got a little something for everyone.

DIVE IN

Cool, clear swimming holes within easy driving distance of Orlando

When looking to jump into some water this summer, the first thing that comes to mind is usually one of Florida’s many beautiful beaches. But most of those are at least an hour away. Swimming pools? Unless you or a friend have one, public options are hard to find (though check out our list on page 21). Orlando natives know the best cool-off spots are Florida’s beautiful natural springs. Now is the perfect time to check out some of these scenic swimming holes, and here are a few of them closest to Orlando — none of these are more than 45 minutes away.

Wekiwa Springs State Park

1800 Wekiwa Circle, Apopka

Most Orlandoans are very familiar with the spring at the end of the grassy hill known as Wekiwa Springs, so we won’t bore you with the bucolic details. It wouldn’t be a proper Orlando summer without at least one day whiled away here, so get some friends assembled and pick your activity for the day: canoeing, swimming, snorkeling or general chillin’.

Wekiva Island

1014 Miami Springs Drive, Longwood

Wekica Island is a watering hole in both senses: You can dip and soak to your heart’s content in the natural spring water, but you can also belly up at the Tooting Otter wine and beer bar and get your drink on (within reason), which makes it one of Orlando’s most popular summer

get-together spots. Rent a cabana to hang out with pals, or if you’re not about that leisurely life, rent a canoe, kayak or paddleboards and go exploring.

Kelly Park/Rock Springs

400 E. Kelly Park Road, Apopka Kelly Park features a free-flowing natural spring that runs at 68 degrees year-round, so you should definitely keep it in mind for those extra-hot Florida summer days. Tubing is the most common activity, and rentals are available from vendors right outside the park. The park also includes full-service concession, picnic pavilions and a playground for the little ones.

Blue Spring State Park

2100 W. French Ave., Orange City Blue Spring State Park is the biggest spring on the St. John’s River, and probably pretty familiar to most Orlando residents. It’s best known for manatee viewing, but if you’ve got a scuba license, you should definitely check out the underwater cave about 100 feet below the surface.

De Leon Springs State Park

601 Ponce de Leon Blvd., De Leon Springs De Leon Springs has a reputation for beautiful turquoise water, so grab a canoe and glide through the spring one leisurely stroke at a time. Snorkeling is very popular here, as there are underwater caves hiding in deep water — just don’t go exploring in them!

SNACKS ON THE BEACH

Five seaside restaurants with culinary charm and relaxed atmosphere

Abeachside getaway isn’t more than an hour away for Orlandoans — traffic permitting, of course — with Volusia County’s beaches and the Space Coast being the most proximate. Along this shoreline, beachside bar and grills are a dime a dozen, but the five seaside (and seaside-adjacent) spots featured here aren’t just places to take in the ocean air — they’re places to experience a memorable meal.

Spanish River Grill

Henry and Michelle Salgado are culinary royalty in NSB, so when the James Beard Award semifinalists resuscitated the concept that started it all for them after a six-year absence, coastal folk were rightfully excited. Version 2.0 serves a bevy of tapas, raciones, pinxtos and Basque favorites that made the original a draw — everything from tortilla espanola to lamb loin chop to pulpo a la gallega. Old Spanish wines and paellas are also offered. 1518 S. Dixie Freeway, New Smyrna Beach; 386-9574788; instagram.com/spanishrivergrill

Rusty’s Seafood & Oyster Bar

Enjoying heaping plates of seafood on Rusty’s enormous outdoor deck in full view of the massive floating cities leaving port is an exercise in superlatives. Here’s another — it’s the best place to eat in Port Canaveral. The fresh catch is always your best bet, but snack on chililime oysters, coconut shrimp or steamed snow crab legs while you wait. And never skip the Key lime pie. Rusty’s happens to be a great spot to watch rocket launches, too. 628 Glen Cheek Drive, Cape Canaveral; 321-783-2033; rustysseafood.com

JT’s Seafood Shack

After Hurricane Matthew forced the closure of beloved seafood and live music haunt Matanzas Innlet Restaurant, this beloved

seafood and live music haunt 10 minutes south of the Matanzas Inlet Bridge on A1A helped cushion the blow. A menu of (what else?) fresh seafood lures them in — the seafood boil of snow crab, clams, mussels, shrimp, sausage, potato and corn is a must — while beneath the giant oaks outside, live acts keep them lingering. So does the fried banana cheesecake. 5224 N. Oceanshore Blvd., Palm Coast; 386-446-4337; jtseafoodshack.com

Wild Ocean Seafood Market

They make an impression with locals at the Audubon Park Community Market, but Wild Ocean’s sprawling facility in Titusville is a seafood lover’s dream. No, it doesn’t have an ocean view, but their catch is as ocean-fresh as it gets. Have a seat in the eat-in area and feast on steamed rock shrimp and fried blue crab before having the catch of the day prepared any way you like. And don’t go home empty-handed — the market is just too good to ignore. 688 S. Park Ave., Titusville; 321-269-1116; wildoceanmarket.com

Burger Inn

When it comes to roadside burger stands in Central Florida, none matches the vibe of this Brevard County institution. They’ve been at it since 1952, offering curbside service long before it became de rigueur during the pandemic. And they’re still doing it long after most restaurants have stopped offering the service. Just pull up, turn on your lights, roll down the windows and wait for the smashing smashburgers and shakes to be delivered. In a sign the Burger Inn is keeping with the times, an Impossible Burger option is also offered. And don’t sleep on the funnel cake (literally or figuratively). 1819 N. Harbor City Blvd., Melbourne; 321254-2211; facebook.com/theburgerinn

CHILL OUT

Keep cool from the inside out all summer long with these chilly desserts

When it’s simply too hot to function in Orlando, the best thing to do is indulge in a frozen treat — and luckily, Central Florida pretty much has you covered on that front, from traditional ices and popsicles to more modern flavors and unique presentations.

Hanalei Shave Ice: Lilikoi shave ice instagram.com/hanaleishaveice

Shaved ice with passion fruit syrup, topped with condensed milk and li hing mui, a dried plum powder that adds a sweet-salty-sour taste.

Sampaguita Ice Cream + Bake Shop: Banoffee pie

instagram.com/sampaguitaicecream

An ice cream version of the classic pie made with toffee ice cream, fresh banana chunks, a dulce de leche swirl and a cinnamon graham-cracker crunch.

Sugar Rush Marshmallows: Frozen s’mores

facebook.com/sugarrushmarshmallows

Flavors rotate, but we were knocked out by the Berry Cobbler: Blackberry cobbler ice cream rolled in graham-cracker crumbs, stuffed in a vanilla marshmallow, topped with berry drizzle and served on a stick.

Rainbow Sno-Cones: Cream ice rainbowsnocones.com

Shaved ice and soft-serve ice cream:

a classic combo that does the trick. Rainbow offers a few “cream” flavors of ice that combine especially well with soft-serve — we like the “wedding cake” flavor over chocolate ice cream.

Snowbean Café: Patbingsu instagram.com/snowbean_orlando

Fluffy ice-milk in traditional Korean flavors, topped with a surprising variety of fruit, cereal, cookie chunks, brownie chunks … the combo options are almost endless.

Matcha Café Maiko: Pandan soft-serve cafemaikoorl.com

Standard flavors are green tea, vanilla and ube, but there’s always a special flavor of the month, and May means pandan! OK, it’s pretty similar to vanilla, but it has a lovely green color and slight herbaceous aroma. Ballers can order their cone “Shogun style,” wrapped in a sheet of edible gold leaf.

La Isla del Frappe: Crackerjack

cheesecake frappe

facebook.com/laisladelfrappe

Another menu with almost limiless opportunities to mix and match — La Isla del Frappe will top the base of your choice (ice cream blended with fresh fruit) with the toppings of your choice:

Ferrero Rocher, tiny slice of cheesecake, caramel-coated corn and peanuts, slices of Swiss Rolls, chocolate-covered strawberries and many, many more.

RAISE A GLASS

Rounding up the choicest indoor and outdoor options in Orlando’s brewery and taproom scene

OK, it’s summer. It’s hot outside (if one wants to generously describe the consequences of a climate crisis we’ve yet to effectively mitigate), and for the locals who aren’t terribly concerned about the state of their livers (or are sober for whatever reason — we don’t ask, and don’t judge), Orlando’s got a wide variety of local brewing options.

While tourists who flock to the City Beautiful have just a short time to explore, those of us who stick around and build families here (biological or chosen) understand the importance of supporting our local neighbors (and drinking their beer). This year, we’ve come up with a list of some of Orlando’s best indoor tap rooms and outdoor brewery spaces, depending on what you’re into, or when the weather permits.

Got your designated driver ready? Let’s go:

Orlando’s Best Indoor Taprooms

Broken Strings

1012 W. Church St., brokenstringsbrewery.com

A jewel for beer lovers, nestled in the heart of Parramore, and located less than half a mile from Exploria Stadium. Come for the beer, the occasional live music, to watch

the games (or to pregame) — stay for the eclectic, musicthemed art splayed across the walls, the welcoming staff and … well, yes, the beer, too.

OK, but is there outdoor seating?

Yes, there are several tables outside for outdoor seating.

Deadwords

23 N. Orange Blossom Trail, deadwords.com

A spacious brewery, also located in Parramore, that offers a suave, cool-as-a-cucumber vibe. There’s plenty of indoor seating — including high-tops and long tables — so it’s a neat spot for larger parties (total capacity for the main tasting room is ~125), with a food menu featuring pizza, pretzels and more.

OK, but is there outdoor seating?

Yes, there is a fair amount of outdoor seating, featuring long tables and benches.

RockPit Brewing

10 W. Illiana St., rockpitbrewing.com

A spacious venue with plenty of indoor seating and bigscreen TVs for the games. Come for the beer, stay for the brewery’s GIF-heavy explanation of the Trump/Pence sign posted in the window next door (tldr; it’s not theirs, they don’t deserve the ire) and the “weird stares” that staff defi-

nitely aren’t giving customers. (We thought the staff were pretty nice and chill, tbh.)

OK, but is there outdoor seating?

Yes, but limited.

Tactical Brewing

4882 New Broad St., tacticalbeer.com

With some of the best art around for their cans and merch, Tactical Brewing offers a moderately sized indoor space that’s kept cool for when the heat is just Too Much. Located in Baldwin Park, it’s a great spot to scooch over to after a walk around Lake Baldwin, or after grabbing food at one of the neighboring restaurants.

OK, but is there outdoor seating?

Yes, limited outdoor seating is available as well.

Ten10 Brewing

1010 Virginia Drive, ten10brewingcompany.com

Walk into Ten10, and you’ll be met with a relaxed, moderately-sized taproom just off Mills Avenue, with no pretense, a welcoming crowd of regulars, and a beer for pretty much anyone/everyone.

OK, but is there outdoor seating?

There are a few spots outside to seat your caboose, but outdoor seating is limited.

Orlando’s Best Outdoor Brewery Spaces

RHYTHM AND BOOZE

Four excellent Fringe shows that will have you humming

The 32nd annual Orlando Fringe didn’t officially debut its slate of over 120 shows until today (Wednesday, May 17), but press previews for the festival kicked off on May 10. Here’s a sample of the many shows I was able to sample before the festival opened to the public. These are just the tip of the iceberg; see lots more Fringe 2023 reviews at orlandoweekly.com.

8-Track: The Sounds of the ’70s in Concert

Excellent Adventure Productions

Fred Berning’s Excellent Adventure Productions, presenter of past Fringe hits like Cupid & Psyche, is back with a toe-tapping jukebox tribute to the decade I was born that should have cross-generational appeal. (Yes, I’m that old.) As conceived by Rick Seeber, the show digests the decade’s major cultural movements (anti-war, free love and disco) into a breezy hour-long musical medley that’s immensely elevated by a killer quartet of talented triple threats: classically trained stage veteran E. Mani Cadet and his theme park performer co-stars Larry Ballard, Brittany Dennis and Nyeshia Smith.

Included musical genres range from funk and soul to folk rock, with arranger Michael Gribbin’s faithful backing tracks sounding far superior to the typical synthesized karaoke. With over 40 tracks, most of the era’s expected earworms are covered, but some bizarro bits make the mix too, like a brief mashup of the Star Wars cantina song and “Bohemian Rhapsody.”

Director-choreographer Michael Rodgers wisely allows his charismatic cast to create characters and comedic moments without any dialogue to weigh down the pace, and George Spelvin’s paisley-powered costumes provide plenty of sparkle. Microphone mishaps marred some of the heavenly harmonies during the press preview, but I trust this team of seasoned pros will power through the problems. Their biggest issue might be getting lost among all the avant-garde at the Festival; 8-Track would be the ideal show if Fringe were on a cruise ship or in a casino.

Bullock and the Bandits: Back in the Saddle Ant Farm Productions and Susan Jacome Turner

Welcome back to Deadwood, South Dakota, and the haunted halls of legendary lawman Seth Bullock’s hotel. You never know whose ghost you might meet, but you’re guaranteed to hear some hard-hitting hillbilly rock & roll before you check out.

As the titular frontman, Fringe Lifetime Achievement award winner David Lee returns in High Plains Drifter style, making his entrance through the theater’s swinging saloon doors though a cloud of dramatically backlit fog. Lee begins by blowing the doors off the Ren with a thunderous rendition of “Riders on the Storm” and an ominously funereal “Bad Moon on the Rise,” backed by a first-rate five-piece band featuring Matt Lynx, aka Orlando’s Gen Z answer to Jimi Hendrix.

Things get even more electrifying after Lee is joined by

Kristie Jane, who gives a thrillingly feral reading of Taylor Swift’s “Mastermind,” and Eddie Cooper, slaying with Steely Dan and Dave Matthews Band. The trio’s harmonic team-ups on Allison Krauss’ “Jacob’s Dream” and Kansas’ “Dust in the Wind” gave me goosebumps.

Go in expecting a high-decibel concert with some connective patter rather than a full-blown musical, grab a libation, and bask in the sound of this butt-kicking “Band on the Run,” safe from the storms raging outside.

Ha Ha Da Vinci

Phina Pipia

A Renaissance-obsessed graduate student from Queens stumbles across a time machine designed by Leonardo DaVinci and his illusionist pal Luca Pacioli, and swiftly finds herself sucked into the 15th century in Ha Ha Da Vinci, an occasionally muddled but often magical melange of musicianship and physical theater from Washington-based artist Phina Pipia.

DaVinci’s voice (emanating from a difficult-to-understand retro radio) guides Pipia through various absurd tasks in her quirky quest to return home: She performs some simple but effective sleight-of-hand; strums a couple of charming original folk tunes; does some amusingly dorky interpretive dancing; and shows off her impressive operatic range while puppeteering a life-sized Vitruvian Man. The musical moments are heartwarming highlights — Pipia plays the floor piano à la Tom Hanks in Big, while wearing a tuba to boot! — but I struggled to see how a few of the more abstract bits connected to the plot; a long lunar shadow puppet sequence in particular slows the pace.

Ha Ha Da Vinci is an “only at Fringe” sort of show suffused with originality and interesting imagery. Some elements could stand a little sharpening, but its elegiac underlying theme of “yearning for normal times” should find a friendly audience among playful adults and thoughtful children alike.

The Mysterious Life of Amy Thompson McKean Central Florida Composers Forum

You’ve likely never heard of Amy Thompson McKean, a mid-century mother of two and unhappily wedded wife who composed countless “children” that were nearly lost to history. But she’s been rescued from “obscurity and irrelevance” by writer-director Charlie Griffin’s first-person musical biography, in which she resists her own erasure by telling us her tragic tale.

McKean — as embodied here by actress Karen Shriner — lived nearly a century ago, but her glamorous tales of life in Manhattan between the world wars reveal unexpectedly contemporary attitudes about sexuality and equality. The shocking 11th-hour explanation behind her disappearance, just as she found fame on the newfangled NBC network, delivers a devastating gut punch to the ideal of female liberation.

Griffin’s dense script has a few too many wordy digressions that divert the pacing during his examinations of cultural appropriation and gender politics, and I wish he gave Shriner something more dynamic to do than simply sit and stand. But the show soars each time pianist Julian Bond accompanies Shriner, a veteran of EPCOT’s Voices of Liberty, as she employs her angelic soprano on one of McKean’s lullaby-like tunes. Although the ending didn’t provide quite enough historical context to feel fully satisfying, Shriner’s multilayered and fully invested performance makes this a mystery well worth unraveling.

delicious.

Their catering team can build a custom menu for your sudsy shindig.

Whatever your druthers, Big Storm Amway Center’s culinary maestros can whip up copious cuisines in their full kitchen for you to pick up and carry out or enjoy amongst the taps. These folks take care of each other, so you know they’ll take care of you.

“We all get together regularly outside work to just to hang out,” taproom manager Chris Maffei says. “If anyone on our staff is having a rough time, we all pitch in to help them out. That’s our secret sauce here, and it translates to our customers. We love making people’s day here.”

What’s pouring at Beer Merica: the juicy Bromosa Tangerine IPA, smooth-and-toasty Wavemaker Amber Ale, and super Floridian Starkey Strawberry Blonde Ale.

Ivanhoe Park Brewing

Their taproom and beer list are toasts to Central Florida’s past. Flagship brews like Toboggan Blonde Ale and Joyland IPA pay loving tribute to Lake Ivanhoe’s sun-soaked tourist attractions and thrill rides of old. Every year Ivanhoe Park Brewing throws their own beer festival, Return to Joyland, to celebrate the OG Orlando amusement park (and pour a bunch of great beer lakeside).

Look, it’s Ivanhoe Village. Nuff said.

Waterfront views. Shopping aplenty. Orlando’s fertile crescent of bar and breweries are just begging to be bar crawled— starting at Ivanhoe Park Brewing, of course.

There’s a bounce house every fourth Sunday for the kiddos (and weekly events galore).

“We want to throw fun get togethers that parents can bring their kids to,” owner Glenn Closson says. “And bring in local makers to spotlight their product. We always want to have great craft beer, but that commitment to community has also been there since the beginning.” Food trucks. Food trucks. Food trucks!

Twenty to 30 food trucks and popups, from enterprising chefs slinging their latest recipes to long-time local favorites, bring the tasty tidbits to pair with your suds of choice.

They pour flavorful brews even your Coors-nursing uncle will love.

A focus on quaffable beers for every kind of drinker. From the sessionable Park Hopp’r Golden Pilsner to their perfectly balanced Joyland IPA and the immensely refreshing, awardwinning Guavacation Berliner Weisse.

What’s pouring at Beer Merica: the hazy Curtains Up 2023 IPA from Orlando Fringe will make an encore appearance alongside Ivanhoe Park’s flagship brews.

Mellow Mushroom Winter Park

All you need is love and a large Holy Shiitake Pie.

This homey, cozy mushroom has a deep passion for The Beatles, and with a love like that, you know local artist Andrew Spier was glad to paint a vibrant mural inspired by the Yellow Submarine.

You can get your jog on and

your pizza in by joining the local runners club.

Every Monday at 6 pm the Orlando Runners Club meets in the Mellow parking lot, gets three to five miles in, then pops a squat for 20% off post-jog pies and happy hour bevvies. Their otherworldly pizzas make for fantastic beer pairings. With 22 drafts on tap—from IPAs and Belgian quads to sours and hefeweizens—and a mighty rotating menu of craft cocktails, there’s bound to be a rich and earthy or sweet and savory pie that will pair splendidly with your libation of choice.

The leafy covered patio is perfect for summertime sipping. This is a vibes-based pizza joint, and nothing says “maximum chillage” like staying cool with a hot slice while taking in the house foliage.

It’s about more than the pizza! “It’s almost like getting an entrée in the form of a pizza,” regional bar manager Kim Moodie says. “When you’re adding banana peppers and jalapeños and pesto and mushroom and all these funky things—its more than getting a slice of cheese or veggie. Plus, our salads are phenomenal. There’s always something for everyone.”

Mellow Mushroom UCF

The drafts and drinks are as local as their staff.

This crew of current and former Knights put local breweries front and center, with 25 taps pouring a plethora of Florida craft beers across styles and flavor profiles. And our bartenders whip up drool-worthy cocktails sourced with fresh local ingredients. From bingo nights to life music, there’s plenty to do throughout

the week.

“We listen to our staff and regulars to see what they want,” restaurant manager Jonae West says. “We do our best not to cater exclusively to one crowd. Inclusivity is the number one thing here.”

If you bleed black and gold and red sauce, this Mellow is for you. After a long day spent rocking the Bounce House, Mellow Mushroom UCF is a great spot to eat a victory Buffalo Chicken pizza and knock a few back with friends. Don’t forget to give a hearty “charge on” to the Pegasus mural on the way out! For thirsty Knights and regulars, their drink specials are a big ol’ deal.

Every week brings a bunch of drinks to the bar top that will make you AND your wallet very happy. You can knock $2 off those local drafts mentioned above every Thursday, cans and bottles take a $2 dip on Mondays, and their mighty margaritas go on happy hour every Tuesday at $4 off. Plus, Sangria Sundays, anyone? Their house-made beer cheese absolutely slaps. Look, when this gooey, golden stuff is on the table, not a single pretzel bite is safe.

Devaney’s Sports Pub

It’s been cracking crispy boys in Winter Park since 1991. While many great bars on University Boulevard have come and gone over the last 30+ years (RIP Underground Bluz), Devaney’s has not only survived, but is pouring more pints than ever—and showing every single NFL game every single Sunday. Yes, that’s a lot of TVs. And yes, they’re damn proud of it.

Their Cuban sandwich is unreal. In addition to hot wings, nachos, and other sports bar staples, Owner Michael DiAlexander put his South Florida roots on the menu in the form of this savory, buttery Miami favorite. And it’s DARN good.

You can throw back a beer that helps give back to the community.

“It’s called the Devaney’s Foundation,” DiAlexander says. “We’ve worked with Seminole County Schools, the Orlando Fire Department—just looking to get more involved and give back in any way we could.”

Dart players and pinball wizards will have a blast.

In the event your team loses the big game on Sunday, there’s always Devaney’s gallery of dartboards, arcade shooters, pinball machines, and other sweet, sweet distractions from your soul-crushing defeat. If you’ve got a serious case of Miami Dolphins fandom, put those fins up!

You can always count on the boys from South Florida playing on the biggest screen in the house. Trust us, it’s a BIG screen.

Cavo’s Bar and Kitchen

They stack some mondo handhelds over there.

We’re talking your tradition Philly cheesesteaks and meatball subs, but what’s that? A chicken Philly? A pizza steak sandwich?? Cavo’s massive sandos are stuffed to the brim with meat, cheese, and all the appropriate fixin’s. This is where Philadelphia Eagles fly.

What pairs best with an authentic Philly cheesesteak sandwich? An ice-cold lager, but also, cheering and/or booing your Iggles in

October, preferable during the same game! Just please, leave the batteries at home, okay?

Look, it’s Thornton Park. Nuff said.

From the charming brick roads to those old moss-draped oak trees, you can’t beat scarfing down a classic Italian hoagie, washing it down with a pale ale and walking it off around Lake Eola.

You’ve gotta try their spiked cold brew cocktail.

“We take a slim keg of Foxtail Coffee cold brew and mix it with Bushmills Irish Whiskey before putting it through the tap line,” associate general manager Demetri Seales says. “It’s one of those drinks that goes down so smooth that it kind of sneaks up on you, and people seem to really like it.”

Sundays bring the brunch. Say you’ve had a long week, and it’s time to sit down with some boozy orange juice and a big old plate. From 11 AM to 3 PM every Sunday, Cavo’s is just the ticket. From scrumptious biscuits and gravy to a delish pork roll—even vegetarian Brussels hash—you’ll be ready to postpone those Sunday scaries just a little longer.

The Roque Pub

They have special NA brews for your four-legged friends. There’s “dog-friendly” and then there’s “pouring your doggo an alcohol-free puppy beer so you can both unwind after a long day of filling spreadsheets and barking at the birds outside.” You can practice your follow through by joining their in-house dart league.

At Roque Pub, Sundays are for hitting bullseyes. Starting at 6:30 PM every Sunday, you can swing

by and start slingin’ with players of all skill levels.

Bottles and cans, bottles and cans!

Drafts are fantastic, but sometimes you just want to show off your coozie collection! Choose from more than 450 craft brews and ciders straight chilling in Roque Pub’s capacious beer fridges.

Randall Night taps a fun new infusion every month.

Every first Saturday, the Roque crew runs one of their draft beers through a randall handle packed with fresh local ingredients— think Florida strawberries, citrus, honey, and more. This is THE spot for grabbing big eats on a budget.

We’re talking massive handfuls and a wide variety of said handfuls. Their signature sandwiches and wraps will fill you up and send you back to the office with a smile on your face. When you have more time to sit and digest, tuck into their double-stacked cheeseburger with specialty Roque sauce.

Motorworks Brewing Orlando

Award-winning craft beers brewed, once again, in the middle of downtown.

Craft beer brewed in Orlando has a decades-long history (pour one out for our friends at Orlando Brewing), and Motorworks Brewing has taken that baton and sprinted with it. IPAs, oatmeal stouts, zany fruited beers—the core Motorworks beers are all here, plus those tasty pilot brews we mentioned earlier.

They love brewing experimental batches on their pilot system.

This is where the magic happens: on a seven-barrel, small batchfriendly brew system. And lucky for all of us, we get to savor the results of their tinkering when they put those one-off pilot beers on tap.

Their roasted pork sandwiches are next level.

The pork going on your next panini will have been marinated in their award-winning V-Twin Vienna Lager and slow-cooked to savory perfection for 8 to 12 hours on-site.

You can swing by for live music every Friday night. Start your weekend right with $4 flagship pints until 7:00 PM and an evening of grooves, tunes, and even some sick dance moves, depending on how many of those pints you get in. No judgment!

It’s a slice of Bradenton planted in the City Beautiful. Take the beautiful Motorworks Bradenton location—beer garden and all—make it fun-sized and plug it right in the old Mini Cooper dealership on Orange Avenue. Open air drinking and dining is still (somehow) uncommon in downtown, and once the outdoor deck reopens this summer, it’s going to be glorious.

What’s pouring at Beer Merica: the brand spankin’ new Blueberry Trails Fruited Honey Wheat Ale and Mimosa Sour IPA.

Sloppy Taco Palace

The Sloppy Taco is king. When they say “sloppy,” they ain’t kidding. The star dish and namesake of this Orlando watering hole is loaded with so much goodness that your hard

shell runneth over. Pro tip: go for the fish tacos. You’re welcome. You can leave your mark by adding to the dollar wall. Every dive has some variation of STP’s dollar wall proudly displayed above the bar, but with all the artists and creators from the parks coming through, this one has a bit more…pizzazz. Check out the doodles, spoofs and goofs left by local creatives of yore, and, if you’re feeling inspired, leave your own! Hospitality pros—and great prices—made it an industry hotspot.

After 16 years of serving delicious tacos and hefty twofor-one drink specials on Kirkman Road, industry folks have figured out that this is the place to fuel up.

They burn the midnight oil for those hungry cast and team members.

The kitchen keeps crankin’ late into the night, so anyone getting off work with a rumbly in their tumbly can grab a bite and a drink (or a few!) before hitting the showers, getting some shuteye, and going back to the magical place tomorrow. It’s become a second home for Orlando performers who’ve come from afar.

“We stay open on Thanksgiving, Christmas, and all sort of holidays for our neighbors who’ve moved to Orlando from the Northeast, the Midwest,” owner Timothy Foley says. “They may not have family here, so we give them the place to enjoy a meal and bond with the family they make here.”

ON (small) SCREENS IN ORLANDO

The ongoing writers’ strike means all premiere dates are subject to change. Also, Tuesday is the day HBO Max officially becomes just Max. Don’t expect Disney+ to follow suit by rechristening themselves “+,” because Ed Sheeran has enough money left to sue.

PREMIERES WEDNESDAY:

The Family Stallone — Sly and his clan make like the Osbournes with their very own life-athome show. Cameos are promised from the likes of Al Pacino and Dolph Lundgren. Hey, I hear Brigitte Nielsen is good in these things. Let’s see if ol’ Rambo has the stones to go there. (Paramount+)

High Desert — If you were thinking of retaining a private investigator, you probably wouldn’t want to find out she had a substance-abuse problem and was still reeling from the loss of her mother. Yet that’s just what you’re getting when you hire the PI played by Patricia Arquette in this new dark-comedy series. Listen, I can handle my fictional advocates having feet of clay. Just don’t tell me John Morgan had a DUI or something.

(Apple TV+)

Queenmaker: The Making of an It Girl — Those in the mood for a real-life Gossip Girl can check out this documentary about Park Avenue Peerage, the initially anonymous blog that reported on the doings of Manhattan’s young and affluent. The identity of its author may surprise you! (Hint: It wasn’t that guy who does Bungalower, but good guess.)

(Hulu)

Working: What We Do All Day — The ethnographies of Studs Terkel get an update

stopping in at various workplaces to see how today’s Americans view their jobs. Yeah, that’s what we all need to make us even more paranoid than we already are: Undercover President. (Netflix)

PREMIERES THURSDAY:

The Ferragnez: The Series — Italy’s answer to the Kardashians are back for a second season, leading up to a big special scheduled for late summer that will follow star Chiara Ferragni as she co-hosts the Sanremo Festival. Too bad it isn’t Fyre, ’cause that would be another entire season’s worth of material right there. (Prime Video)

Kitti Katz — The power of ancient magic turns three teenage soccer players into feline superheroines in this animated adventure series. Gosh, it’s such a shame when adults who should know better convince children they want to be cats before they’re old enough to decide for themselves. (Netflix)

Rainn Wilson and the Geography of Bliss — The former Dwight Schrute goes on a fact-finding tour to contrast the happiest and unhappiest places on Earth. In the “happiest” column: Disney World. In the “unhappiest”: that state penitentiary that’s going up outside Disney World. (Peacock)

Yaki Tori: Soldiers of Misfortune — A series of Japanese light novels is the source material for an anime series about a youthful rebellion against a “superior alien civilization” that has overrun the Earth. But I ask you, what wouldn’t qualify as a superior civilization at this point? Even the Ferengi are looking pretty reasonable right now. (Netflix)

XO, Kitty — This series spun off from the All the Boys films finds young Kitty Covey (Anna Cathcart) moving all the way to South Korea to pursue romance. She probably should have considered North Korea, because I hear their leader writes beautiful letters.

(Netflix)

PREMIERES FRIDAY:

Consecration — Jena Malone takes the lead in a religious horror flick about the mysterious death of a priest. “Have you or a loved one slipped and fallen on a supine 12-year-old? You may be entitled to compensation.”

(Shudder)

Muted — Spanish authorities try to solve the riddle of a young man who hasn’t uttered a word since going to jail for killing his parents. Then again, there isn’t much to say past that point, since you no longer have to ask anybody for the remote. (Netflix)

Selling Sunset — Season 6 moves on from the collapse of Chrishell and Jason’s courtship and puts the focus back on their work as realestate brokers. Because when you fall out of love, it’s God’s way of telling you to buckle down and really hose somebody on a Spanish Colonial. (Netflix)

Spy/Master — The Cold War is the setting of a six-episode espionage drama about a Russian spy posing as a top man in Romania’s Ceausescu government. This was back when it was harder to spot Russian agents, because they didn’t have strident opinions about Disney remakes and four followers on Twitter.

(HBO Max)

White Men Can’t Jump — I’ve been informed by representatives of certain streaming services that projects like these should not be referred to as “remakes.” Lesson learned: Clearly, having anyone other than Wesley Snipes and Woody Harrelson in the lead roles indicates that what we have here is a “reimagining” of the 1992 flick. God knows what we’ll have to call it when Tucker Carlson gets around to his own version, White Men Don’t Fight Like That. (Hulu)

Young, Famous & African — Five new members of the South African media elite join the cast for Season 2, including a former contestant on Big Brother Africa. Honestly, I thought Big Brother Africa was a villain Jack Kirby made up for issue 24 of Black Panther (Netflix)

PREMIERES SUNDAY:

Fangoria Chainsaw Awards 2023 — This year’s list of nominees being saluted for their outstanding contributions to horror includes Nope, Pearl and whoever outfitted Billie Eilish for the Met Gala. (Shudder)

PREMIERES TUESDAY:

Clone High — Twenty years ago, the inclusion of Gandhi in this animated comedy about teen clones of historical figures inspired a mass hunger strike in India — and helped bring about the series’ cancellation. So for the very late-arriving Season 2, that character is being replaced by an utterly innocuous and insignificant player named … Confucius. AAAAND HERE WE GO AGAIN! (Max)

Gremlins: Secrets of the Mogwai — Tired of seeing Grogu bite his whole act, Gizmo gets an animated series that shows how he was domesticated in 1920s Shanghai. There’s an epic journey with his human protector and everything, just in case you were wondering how deep the “No, screw you” vibes run here. (Max)

Merpeople — Veteran performers from Weeki Wachee Springs State Park are among the subjects profiled in a four-part docuseries about folks who portray or otherwise pay tribute to mermaids. Oh, sure. But when Halle Bailey does it, y’all lose your ever-lovin’ minds. (Netflix)

SmartLess: On the Road — Will Arnett, Jason Bateman and Sean Hayes hit the highway for a touring version of their popular podcast, in which they interview a different mystery guest each time. Celebrities they’ve encountered include Matt Damon, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, David Letterman and the guy who invented White Castle Bites. Effing legend. (Max)

Victim/Suspect — Documentary cameras tag along with reporter Rachel de Leon as she seeks justice for women who gathered up the courage to file charges against their abuser, only to be charged with making a false accusation. And also with being nobody’s type. (Netflix)

LOCAL RELEASES

Orlando’s Cathedral Bells have come a long way since their 2019 emergence. But throughout all the changes that’ve turned Matt Messore’s solo bedroom project into a full touring band of national profile, Cathedral Bells have always been exactly where they want to be, sonically speaking. Even in their debut, their dream-pop signature was specific, clear and considered. Messore has maintained strict faith to the aesthetic, honing it with just a little more refinement each time out.

True to that trajectory, the just-released 13-song album Everything at Once is both a continuation and furtherance of the Cathedral Bells sound. Their dream-pop still floats in the allure of perpetual twilight, a play of light and shadow between gauzy, immaculate melodies and moody post-punk hues. Perhaps the most notable of the subtle distinctions is that their shoegaze tendencies are more reserved sometimes even yielding to a crystalline focus that allows finer details like vocals to shine unfiltered. Everything at Once is the work of a band in the pursuit of perfection, not revelation. The album is released by Philadelphia indie label Born Losers Records (home to notable acts like Frankie Rose, Donzii, Anthony Green and Surf Rock Is Dead) and now streams everywhere. You can see Cathedral Bells play it live at their release show with Leaving Time, The Synthetics, Eyelash and Off-Track. (8 p.m. Saturday, May 20, Will’s Pub, $12-$15)

CONCERT PICKS THIS WEEK

Los Jarritos, Snotnoze Saleem, KT Kink, Fjshwjfe: This choice underground

sampler is probably the week’s most colorful congress of art freaks. The lineup includes Bobby Clock & the Soda Pops spinoff band Los Jarritos, alt-rap phenom Snotnoze Saleem and haunting synth siren Fjshwjfe, who hasn’t performed in Orlando in years. One act worth singling out is local riser KT Kink, who’s had a month that could make this her year. In April, she did a double release, a self-released EP (saint margaret) and a full LP (Naivety) on distinguished Orlando cassette label Popnihil. Both are urgent, body-moving works of experimental synth music that’s both hypnotic and feral. It’s a fusillade that echoes her growing scene presence. Keeping the action nonstop will be DJ Warlock and the visuals of Broken Machine Films. (9 p.m. Friday, May 19, Uncle Lou’s, $5)

Swamp Sistas La La: Under the fascist lead of Governor Pudding Fingers, the climate hasn’t been this systemically hostile to Florida’s LGBTQ+ community in generations as it is right now. That scourge has hit

home with hate groups threatening local community organizations.

In direct and timely response, the Swamp Sistas — the powerhouse, Beth McKee-led sorority of artists dedicated to community service — are rallying for crucial LGBTQ+ support organization The Center Orlando, who’ve been the recent target of threats. The Swamp Sistas’ big annual La La event returns as one of the Orlando Fringe festival’s musical features. The mini festival unto itself will pack six hours of live music from the many pan-genre Swamp Sistas acts and will be headlined by Beth McKee & Her Funky Time Band and Raspberry Pie. The music festivities are free but please drop some money in the (actual and online) bucket that will be making the rounds. Everything collected will directly support The Center’s Mental Health Counseling program at a time when it’s especially needed. (4 p.m. Saturday, May 20, Loch Haven Park Outdoor Stage, donations accepted)

Pohgoh, Have Gun, Will Travel, Jordan Foley & the Wheelhouse: This double feature is a momentous celebration for two legends from our Tampa Bay sister scene. The irrepressible Pohgoh are Florida emo royalty and Have Gun, Will Travel are one of the Sunshine State’s finest, most enduring Americana bands. They both released strong records late last year and have teamed up for a joint four-date hurrah around Central Florida with Orlando being the grand finale. Join in on what’s sure to be an honorary hometown reception for two bona fide Florida greats. (6 p.m. Sunday, May 21, Will’s Pub, $13-$15)

Tove Lo

Pop singer Tove Lo is no stranger to radical vulnerability, and her newly released seven-song mini-album, Dirt Femme (Stripped), serves as both manifesto and a great starting point for the Tovecurious ahead of her Orlando show. Dirt Femme (Stripped) is indeed stripped-down and unplugged to the barest of essentials of acoustic guitar and voice, showcasing all the gorgeous power of her voice and songs. So listen to that, and then do the ol’ whiplash and go see this multi-platinum selling, Grammy-nominated Swedish artist live with full production and all the sonic accouterments of her front-facing and ferocious electro-pop music. Soundcloud breakout and future-forward pop star Slayyyter opens the evening. 7 p.m., House of Blues, Disney Springs, Lake Buena Vista, houseofblues. com, $36.50-$86. — Matthew Moyer

FRIDAY-SUNDAY, MAY 19-21

Spooky Empire

Horror ground-zero Spooky Empire returns for their approximately-halfway-to-Halloween shindig over a long weekend with some big pop-cult names. Millie Bobby Brown from Stranger Things is the de facto headliner, and she’s not exactly a regular on the con circuit. Joining her are Heather Matarazzo from Welcome to the Dollhouse and The Munsters’ Butch Patrick. Exemplifying the intriguing past/present pulls of these sort of cons, there are a passel of cast members from both the seminal (original) Night of the Living Dead and (deep shudder) Terrifier as well as three giants from early Godzilla films: Hurricane Ryu, Tsutomu Kitagawa and Mizuho Yoshida. Rounding out the cult end of things are Lloyd “Troma” Kaufman and Patty Mullen (Frankenhooker). Add in the requisite vendors, screenings, cosplay and panels and you’ve got a big weekend stew going. DoubleTree By Hilton At Universal Studios, 5780 Major Blvd., spookyempire. com, $40-$275. — MM

Orlando Gay Chorus: BroadGAY Spectacular

Orlando Gay Chorus are taking their musical tour through the Broadway songbook out on the road for a little mini-tour and a couple of very notable locals

of the

are getting in the van (h/t to one Henry Rollins) to MC. OGC’s BroadGAY Spectacular is a romp through classic and modern showtunes, ranging from Avenue Q, Kinky Boots and Beauty and the Beast to, inevitably though happily, the glammy knees-up that is “(Let’s Do the) Time Warp” from Rocky Horror Picture Show. Emceeing all three nights of this Central Floridian trek are State Rep. Anna Eskamani and Orlando activist (and OW writer) Ida Eskamani. And you know damn well those two bring the energy. Attend the one closest to you or do all three like you’re some weird (OK not weird, but curious, surely) Broadway/Deadhead hybrid. Either way, don’t miss. 7:30 p.m., Friday, May 19, Ritz Theater at the Wayne Densch Performing Arts Center, 201 S. Magnolia Ave., Sanford, ritztheatersanford. com, $23-$30. 2:30 p.m., Sunday, May 21, Theatre Winter Haven, 210 Cypress Gardens Blvd., Winter Haven, theatrewinterhaven.com, $25. 7:30 p.m., Wednesday, May 24, Steinmetz Hall, Dr. Phillips Center for the Performing Arts, 445 S. Leaether Strip

Beautiful with his presence here in the cursed 21st century. But here we are. The Strip is the nom de keyboard of Claus Larsen, a pioneering LGBTQ+ figure in that shadowy-but-satisfying intersection between industrial and Body musics. Larsen has been at it since the late 1980s, perfecting a harsher electro-industrial sound that has captivated several generations of wayward goths and nihilism-curious club kids. Laren has released a treasure trove of seminal albums like Pleasure of Penetration and Science of the Satanic Citizen through notable labels like Zoth Omog, Cleopatra and Metropolis over the decades, and is also not afraid to put his pop-music affections on full display with projects like the Soft Cell covers EP Anal Cabaret (that cover of “Sex Dwarf”!). As you probably gathered, this is transgressive stuff that doesn’t try to play nice for the more fragile of heteros, and y’know what? That’s a good thing. Appropriately opening the night are two new and creative faces in our own queer underground, Pressure Kitten and Haize. 7 p.m., Conduit, 6700 Aloma Ave., Winter Park, conduitfl.com, $22-$30. — MM

TAURUS (April 20-May 20): In the coming weeks, you Bulls must brook no bullies or bullying. Likewise, you should tolerate no bullshit from people trying to manipulate or fool you. Be a bulwark of integrity as you refuse to lower your standards. Bulk up the self-protective part of your psyche so you will be invincibly immune to careless and insensitive spoilers. Your word of power is BUILD. You will align yourself with cosmic rhythms as you work to create situations that will keep you strong and stable during the next 12 months.

GEMINI (May 21-June 20): How much do you believe in your power to become the person you want to be? Ninety percent? Fifty-five? Twenty? Whatever it is, you can increase it in the coming weeks. Life will conspire with you to raise your confidence as you seek new ways to fulfill your soul’s purpose. Surges of grace will come your way as you strive with intense focus to live your most meaningful destiny. To take maximum advantage of this opportunity, I suggest you enjoy extra amounts of quiet, meditative time. Request help from the deepest core of your intelligence.

CANCER (June 21-July 22): Early in the 19th century, cultural researchers Jacob Grimm and Wilhelm Grimm gathered an array of old folk stories and published a collection of what we now call fairy tales. Because the two brothers wanted to earn money, they edited out some graphic elements of the original narratives. For example, in the Grimms’ revised version, we don’t get the juicy details of the princess fornicating with the frog prince once he has reverted to his handsome human form. In the earlier but not published stories of Rumpelstiltskin, the imp gets so frustrated when he’s tricked by the queen that he rips himself apart. I hope you will do the opposite of the Brothers Grimm in the coming weeks, Cancerian. It’s crucial that you reveal and expose and celebrate raw, unvarnished truths.

LEO (July 23-Aug. 22): Is there a job you would love to have as your primary passion, but it’s different from the job you’re doing? Is there a calling you would delight in embracing, but you’re too consumed by the daily routine? Do you have a hobby you’d like to turn into a professional pursuit? If you said even a partial yes to my questions, Leo, here’s good news: In the coming months, you will have an enhanced ability to make these things happen. And now is an excellent time to get underway.

VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22): Virgo-born

Samuel Johnson (1709–1784) was a versatile virtuoso. He excelled as an essayist, biographer, playwright, editor, poet and lexicographer. How did he get so

much done? Here’s one clue. He took his own advice, summed up in the following quote: “It is common to overlook what is near by keeping the eye fixed on something remote. Present opportunities are neglected and attainable good is slighted by minds busied in extensive ranges and intent upon future advantages.” Johnson’s counsel is perfect for you right now, Virgo. Forget about the future and be focused on the present. Dive into the interesting work and play that’s right in front of you.

LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22): I would love you to go searching for treasure, and I hope you launch your quest soon. As you gather clues, I will be cheering you on. Before you embark, though, I want to make sure you are clear about the nature of the treasure you will be looking for. Please envision it in glorious detail. Write down a description of it and keep it with you for the next seven weeks. I also suggest you carry out a fun ritual to formally mark your entry into the treasure-hunting chapter of your life.

SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21): In the coming weeks, you’ll be guided by your deep intelligence as you explore and converse with the darkness. You will derive key revelations and helpful signs as you wander around inside the mysteries. Be poised and lucid, dear Scorpio. Trust your ability to sense what’s important and what’s not. Be confident that you can thrive amidst uncertainty as you remain loyal to your core truths. No matter how murky this challenge may seem, it will ultimately be a blessing. You will emerge both smarter and wiser.

SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21): If you take the Bible’s teachings seriously, you give generously to the poor and you welcome immigrants. You regard the suffering of others as being worthy of your compassionate attention, and you express love not just for people who agree with you and share your cultural traditions, but for everyone. Numerous Biblical verses, including many attributed to Jesus Christ, make it clear that living according to these principles is essential to being a good human. Even if you are not Jewish or Christian, Sagittarius, I recommend this approach to you. Now is an excellent time to hone your generosity of spirit and expand your urge to care for others.

CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19): In 1982, Capricorn actor Ben Kingsley won an Oscar for his role in the film Gandhi Then his career declined. In an animated movie in 1992, he voiced the role of an immortal frog named F.R.O.7., who worked as a James Bond–like secret agent. It was a critical and financial disaster. But

Kingsley’s fortunes rebounded, and he was nominated for Academy Awards in 2002 and 2003. Then his trajectory dipped again. He was nominated for the Golden Raspberry Award for Worst Actor for four separate films between 2005 and 2008. Now, at age 79, he’s rich and famous and mostly remembered for the great things he has done. I suggest we make him your role model for the coming months. May he inspire you to emphasize your hits and downplay your misses.

AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18): I’m devoted to cultivating the art of relaxation, but I live in a world dominated by stress addicts and frenzied overachievers. Here’s another problem: I aspire to be curious, innocent and open-minded, but the civilization I’m embedded in highly values know-itall experts who are very sure they are in command of life’s secrets. One further snag: I’m an ultra-sensitive creator who is nourished by original thinking and original feeling. And yet I constantly encounter formulaic literalists who thrive on clichés. Now here’s the good news: I am a successful person! I do what I love and enjoy an interesting life. Here’s even more good news, Aquarius: In the next 12 months, you will have a knack for creating rhythms that bring you closer than ever to doing what you love and enjoying an interesting life.

PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20): Most of us suffer from at least one absurd, irrational fear. I have a daft fear of heights, even when I’m perfectly safe, and a manic fear of mosquitoes dive-bombing me as I sleep, an event that has only happened four times in my life. My anxiety about running out of money is more rational, though, as is my dread of getting sick. Those worries help motivate me to work hard to earn a living and take superb care of my health. What about you, Pisces? Do you know which of your fears are preposterous and which make at least some sense? The coming weeks will be a favorable time to get a good handle on this question. Ask yourself: “Which of my fears are misdirected or exaggerated, and which are realistic and worthy of my attention?”

ARIES (March 21-April 19): Aries dramatist Samuel Beckett, winner of the prestigious Nobel Prize for Literature, wrote 22 plays. The shortest was Breath. It has no dialogue or actors and lasts less than a minute. It begins and ends with a recording of the cry of a newborn baby. In between there are the sounds of someone breathing and variations in the lighting. I recommend you draw inspiration from Breath in the coming weeks, Aries. Be succinct and pithy. Call on the powers of graceful efficiency and no-nonsense effectiveness. Relish the joys of shrewd simplicity.

A lot of studying is being done on pornography and what it does to our brain. My question: Are there any studies being done on erotic writing? “Women’s Romance Literature” is absolutely exploding in the online self-publishing sector, and my wife is an avid consumer. “Spice” is the euphemism they use but — wow — romance lit is a hot dish. My wife consumes countless e-books and audiobooks, and there seems to be a huge community of readers like her out there. Erotic lit has been very good for our relationship; we listen to scenes together and I help bring my wife to orgasm with my hands or tongue. It’s a fun way to be intimate! And listening is definitely less intrusive when we’re “coupling” than watching other people go at it on a screen. Anyway, back to my question: There are lots of studies looking into the effect of porn movies and pornographic images on the brain. But has anyone studied the impact of erotic literature on the brain? It’s got to be the oldest form of titillating art we have. What’s it doing to us?

Lessons In Titillation

“I haven’t come across neurological studies of erotic writing or literature,” says Dr. Kelsy Burke. “That doesn’t really surprise me since the questions scientists ask about sexuality usually reflect broader social and cultural interests — in this case, research on ‘porn’ is almost exclusively about it as a visual medium, not the written word.”

Burke is a sociologist and the author of The Pornography Wars, a terrific new book about the never-ending culture war over pornography. If Dr. Burke hasn’t run across studies into the kind of dirty stories your wife enjoys reading, those studies don’t exist. And while there are a lot of warring studies that look at the impact of pornographic images — moving and still — on our brains, much of the data being generated is pretty useless.

“There’s a lot more talk about pornography and the brain than there are definitive empirical studies,” Burke says. “And a lot of the talk stems from groups with a political or religious interest in opposing porn. Academic studies, on the other hand, offer mixed results and no definitive conclusions about how porn impacts the brain.”

So, despite all these warring studies and claims — from opponents and supporters of porn — we simply don’t know if pornographic images and videos are warping our brains.

“Here’s what we do know: Our brains process visual images 60,000 times faster than text,” Burke says. “One of the better arguments, in my opinion, about the potential harm of internet porn — which is actually not exclusive to porn at all and applies to all video-streaming websites — is that the quick succession of videos and rapid processing of all of those images is what sucks us in, sometimes for longer than we would like.”

We all know people who watch too much TV, play too many video games and spend too much time on TikTok — all media served up on the exact same screens that serve up porn, and all serving up the exact same dopamine hits. But while people express concerns about “screentime” when it comes to Ted Lasso or Minecraft, the combo of sexual pleasure, sexual agency and the potential for sexual exploitation fuels a unique moral panic about the porn we watch. And there’s generally little concern expressed about people who spend “too much time reading,” even if they’re masturbating to what they read.

“And while we can have a huge queue of romance lit on our Kindles,” Burke says, “we aren’t likely to stay up all night bingeing one after the other, as we might do with, say, Netflix, because our brains will tire from all that textual processing.”

So your wife could be a graduate of the Evelyn Wood Reading Dynamics speedreading program, but there’s a limit — a much lower limit — to the number of dirty stories she can consume in a single day and/or wank. (Evelyn Wood? Anyone get that reference? Anyone? Bueller?) But the same moral scolds who’ve successfully banned books with LGBT themes and characters, as well as books that delve into wrongs committed against Black people and other people of color (slavery, Jim Crow, the Chinese Exclusion Act, the U.S. internment of the Japanese, etc., etc.), are starting to go after romance novels. Books written by Nora Roberts, a popular (and PG) romance novelist, were just pulled from the shelves in a high school in Florida after an activist with the right-wing group Moms for Liberty complained. (You know who was reading Roberts’ books before they got banned? Teachers. You know who’s reading them now? Teenagers.)

“I doubt we’ll see a surge in research on what effect Roberts’ writing has on our brains, not only because banning books is purely political theater,” Burke says. And we may not see a surge in that kind of research because we ultimately don’t need it. “Neuroscientists already know that the stories in our heads are hugely important to our sexual pleasure,” Burke says. “These stories — our thoughts and feelings — can help or hinder our sexual experiences. It sounds like for you and your wife, it’s helping.”

I’m a 32-year-old gay man living in a large U.S. city. I sometimes hook up with college guys through the apps. I’m always up front about what I’m looking for and I try to honor the campsite rule. Occasionally I see the same person more than once and will take them out for dinner or drinks, where I always pay since I remember being a broke college student. This year, I started hooking up a couple of times a month with a 21-year-old guy. Turns out he’s from a very wealthy family — not household names, but super-rich. I don’t know exactly how much money he gets from his family, but he let me know money isn’t an issue for him and insists on paying if we go out. I asked him to alternate who pays so it doesn’t feel uneven. He also bought me a small gift for my home that cost less than $40. When it’s just dinner or small things, I don’t mind too much. But this summer he’ll be doing an internship in Europe. I’ve always wanted to go to the city where he will be working, and he’s offered to fly me out around my birthday, pay for nice hotels and cover other expenses like meals. If he were my age, I would accept, but it feels wrong somehow due to the age gap. It’s just so much money for someone that young to be spending,

but is it OK since he has access to a family fortune? He can easily afford it, but would I be wrong to accept? What are the ethical concerns of having a sugar daddy fuckbuddy who’s so young?

Additional context: I’ve been very clear I’m not interested in dating, and he’s expressed the same. We describe each other as friends, we both date and hook up with other people, we’re both on PrEP and I’ve encouraged him to get tested for STIs regularly. I have no connection to his family, I don’t work in the field he’s going into, we don’t use terms like daddy/boy and he knows I’m financially comfortable, so this gesture seems to be motivated by generosity, not pity.

Spendy Holiday On Wealthy Undergrad’s Pocketbook

His motives could be pure — he could just be generous — or he could be motivated by a desire, possibly subconscious, to control you. When an extremely wealthy person brings an urchin like you or me into their orbit, SHOWUP, we get a glimpse of a world we could never access on our own. The conscious or subconscious awareness that we could be exiled from this world at any moment might lead us to put up with things we wouldn’t tolerate from someone who wasn’t flying us all over the world and picking up the tab for fancy hotels.

That said, it doesn’t sound like your fuckbuddy is being excessively and/or manipulatively lavish, only appropriately and proportionately generous, and I think you should accept his offer. Pick up a few checks, SHOWUP, and enjoy the ride.

ORDER OF PUBLICATION COMMONWEALTH OF VIRGINIA Roanoke City Circuit Court Commonwealth of Virginia, in re: Ki’Yon Terell Casan Smith City of Roanoke DSS v. De’Sandra Yvette Wright

The object of this suit is to: terminate the residual parental rights of De’Sandra Yvette Wright pursuant to Virginia Code Sections 16.1-283(B) and 16.1-283(C) and 16.1-283(C)(1) and approve the goal set at the permanency planning hearing of adoption. “Residual parental rights are defined by Section 16.1-228 of the Code of Virginia (1950) as amended as the rights and responsibilities remaining with a parent after the parent loses custody of a child, including, but not limited to the right to visitation, consent to adoption, the right to determine religious affiliation, and the responsibility for support. The termination of your residual parental rights will permanently end all of your rights and responsibilities to the child named in the petition. The ties between you and your child are severed forever and you become a legal stranger to the child.” It is ordered that the defendant De’Sandra Yvette Wright appear at the above-named Court to protect his or her interest on or before July 14, 2023 at 9:00 am. Case Nos. CJ23-40, CJ23-92 Brenda S. Hamilton, Clerk. Run dates 5/17, 5/24, 5/31 and 6/7.
