Come As You Are
From its earliest days, Tampa Bay has thrived on the diversity of its people. Cuban cigar rollers and African-American musicians helped lay the foundation for a modern metropolis that remains a magnet for visitors from across the country and around the world. Simply put, its multicultural charm is Tampa Bay’s greatest treasure.
Shining brightly amidst this kaleidoscope of cultures is the city’s vibrant LGBTQ+ community. The lavender spirit begins at the top with Mayor Jane Castor, elected in a landslide in 2019 to become the first openly gay mayor of a major Southeastern city.
“One comment that I hear more than anything is how friendly this city is, and how accepting we are of everyone,” says Mayor Jane. “I don’t know if you could boil a city’s rep-
utation down to one sentence that would be better than that.”
The history of gay life in Tampa is being preserved by the University of South Florida Libraries. Visitors can access more than 30 LGBTQ+ archival collections at USF, plus a Queer Literature collection comprised of over 3,000 items.
As for the present, queer joy is everywhere, from the annual Tampa Pride in March, to Pride on the River in September, to the Tampa International Gay & Lesbian Film Festival in October, which has been showcasing LGBTQ-focused stories for more than 30 years. Tampa Bay’s plethora of gay-friendly hotels and restaurants, its sophisticated arts and theater scene, and its lively cocktail culture (especially in Ybor City, nicknamed GaYbor) add up to an LGBTQ destination like no other. →
An LGBTQ+ destination like no other.
Tampa Bay’s greatest treasure is its multicultural charm.
Bonus: The city also happens to be home to historic neighborhoods, family-friendly attractions like Busch Gardens Tampa Bay and The Florida Aquarium, a dazzling Riverwalk lined with museums and restaurants, and must-visit new districts like Water Street and Midtown. And, of course, there’s sunshine all year round, with Florida’s best beaches just minutes away.
Come as you are and you will no doubt be welcomed with open arms. Tampa Bay’s diverse blend of people and cultures is the foundation of its success as a welcoming community open to new ideas and new visitors.
“You will feel special,” says Grace Yang of the Asian Pacific American Bar Association. “You will feel that attention and love.”
The scenic Tampa Riverwalk winds from Armature Works and Water Works Park along the Hillsborough River through the heart of Downtown. From there, it’s a leisurely stroll along the river to the cruise port and Channel District, where the skyline touches the clouds in the pedestrian-friendly $3-billion Water Street Tampa development

Ybor City, pronounced “EE-bore” and sometimes known as GaYbor, is the site of Tampa’s historical and cultural roots — and also home to the annual Tampa Pride parade and festival, and to a number of popular LGBTQ+ clubs and bars. But cigar-making is only a part of this multi-faceted district’s present and future. Today you will discover a diverse culinary scene along the brick streets and iron balconies that welcome revelers day and night.

Where to boogie, bar-hop, and make a night of it.
By Zachary HinesVisiting Tampa Gay, er Bay, for the first time, you may be surprised to find the seemingly limitless options of nightlife and entertainment. This list shines a light on a few of the best places in Tampa for LGBTQ+ visitors to kiki guava-style (and we also throw in a must-visit stop in St. Pete).
Bradley’s on 7th
Journey through what locals refer to as the “gay rainforest” — a casual, no-cover hangout with affordable drinks, affable bartenders, and a lazy river running through the bar. Meet old and new friends in the conversation-friendly front room and party with drag queens and gogo boys on the adjoining dancefloor. 1510 E 7th Ave., bradleyson7th.com.
Southern Nights Tampa
A capital “G-A-Y” club with all the trimmings – modern décor, thumping dancefloor, local & as-seen-on-TV queens, and plenty of eye candy. Music lovers will appreciate local artist Cam Parker’s mural showcasing gay icons such as Madonna, Grace Jones, Lady Gaga and more. 1401 E. 7th Ave., facebook.com/SouthernNightsTampa
The Castle
While not exclusively gay, The Castle is Tampa’s queerest alternative venue. Get your goth on,
rave to a rotating roster of new wave DJs, and bask in making your Buffy the Vampire Slayer cosplay dreams come true. If you’re lucky, you might just run into regular fixtures such as The Senator and the neighborhood’s very own Peter Pan. 2004 N. 16th St., castleybor.com.
Showbar
Ybor City’s flashiest place to party is a good time on a sugar high. An onslaught of dueling pianos, drag queens, boylesque and more — paired with excitable smoke cannons and buckets of confetti — will have you swinging from one of their many iconic chandeliers. 1613 E. 7th Ave., showbarybor. com.
Johnsons
The newest and naughtiest addition to the list is Johnsons. It might be slightly off the beaten path, but if a gay strip club with monthly Bear Parties sounds like your kind of scene, you will not be disappointed. 2606 N. Armenia Ave., johnsonstampa.com.
City Side Lounge
Nestled in yuppie South Tampa, City Side Lounge is famous locally for its popular karaoke nights and frequent showcases of drag performers. The easygoing vibe extends outdoors on a breezy tropical-themed patio. 3703 Henderson Blvd., citysideloungetampa.com.
Cocktail St. Pete
If you happen to cross the bridge to visit Downtown St. Pete, a visit to CockTail must be on the agenda. The elegantly designed bar is the perfect place to sip their expertly crafted namesake alongside boundary-pushing, high-quality performances. The double-entendre in the name even extends to a chandelier that has a dirty little secret. 2355 Central Ave., St. Petersburg, cocktailstpete.com.
The Wet Spot Pool Bar & Day Club
Billed as Cocktail St. Pete’s “climatic co-star,” this new pool bar will literally make you “wet.” The newest place to see and be seen, The Wet Spot provides a homebase for the once scattered area pool parties, not to mention the added bonus of perfecting your tan. Memberships and day passes available. 2355 Central Aves, St. Petersburg, cocktailstpete.com.
A happy crowd at Southern Nights (Photo: Josh Shipp)Tampa’s Got Talent
No matter where you turn in the A&E scene, queer artists reign.
By Zachary Hines & David Warner Lavaughn Forbes with his mixed-media portrait of Lenny Kravitz in the #visibleUSF show. Dave DeckerTampa can be a lot of things, but most of all it is an equal-opportunity good time. Just like Jose Gaspar and his hidden treasure, visitors can strike gold whether they stumble upon a concert from Jeremy Gloff, Tampa’s self-proclaimed “Queen of Pop,” or discover the “loud, gay harp music” of His Hem at venues like Crowbar, Hooch & Hive, or New World Brewery. Meanwhile, cabaret artists like Matthew McGee, Daphne Ferraro, and shameless plug alert my very own diva duo Coco & Homo can be found hoofing it on local stages.
Speaking of stages, you can catch a performance at Stageworks, Jobsite Theater, Tampa Rep or the Straz Center for the Performing Arts (or in St. Pete, American Stage, freeFall Theatre and The Studio@620). Not only do these theaters have strong LGBTQ+ representation onstage and off, their diverse presentations offer something for everyone. As a member of the programming team at the Straz, I cordially invite you, dear reader, to our Out@The Straz series celebrating the deep bench of local queer talent. (That was my second and final shameless plug — promise!)
In Tampa there is no better good-time than in the company of drag queens. In fact, it is hard not to stumble upon a drag night or
brunch, even outside of GaYbor. The drag scene has depth and diversity I have yet to see in any other city. In just one night you can meet the local legends who have seen Tampa evolve over the decades, Florida pageant girls, Drag Race-ready lewk queens, bearded queens, alternative queens, and pretty much any type of drag imaginable. It is a community where all artforms and perspectives are welcomed, supported, and encouraged that is how the magic here happens.
Tampa’s visual art community is enriched by a wide array of queer artists. Many of the murals decorating the walls of the city are creations from the minds of local LGBTQ+ visual artists, most notably Cam Parker’s tribute to Lady Gaga on Franklin Street and Chizzy’s pop art in Hyde Park Village. And aficionados of the best in visual art know to add Tampa Bay’s world-class museums to their itinerary, including two on Tampa’s Riverwalk — the Tampa Museum of Art, now undergoing a major expansion, and the Florida Museum of Photographic Arts in "The Cube" next to the cylindrical Rivergate Tower — and a plethora of museums in St. Pete, including the world-famous Dalì Museum, the gorgeous new Museum of the American Arts & Crafts Movement, and the awesome glass art at the Imagine Museum and the Morean Arts Center’s Chihuly Collection
And at the University of South Florida, enterprising PhD candidate Christy Paris showcased a new generation of queer artists in #visibleUSF: Queering the Art Narrative Through Curatorial Activism. In addition to artworks by USF students, the exhibition included an array of rainbow flags (assembled by Desiree Anderson) representing the full spectrum of LGBTQ+ life, plus an eye-opening sampling of artifacts from USF Libraries’ LGBTQ+ Collections revealing the history of gay activism and anti-gay pushback in Tampa over the decades. (Visitors are welcome to explore the collections, which can be viewed by appointment by sending an email to sydneyjordan@usf.edu.)
So, whether you prefer backflips and death drops, sipping a craft beer alongside a gay harpist, or reveling in the fabulosity of queer artists, I guarantee that these experiences will leave you with a surprising new perspective on the Big Guava.

Ybor City is famous for its rich history of cigar making, and high quality, hand-rolled cigars can still be found here. Better yet, at Tabanero Cigar Factory, J.C. Newman Cigar Company and Tampa Sweethearts Cigar Company you can learn about the rolling process by watching artisans
fashion tobacco leaves into perfectly formed cigars. You can also get tips on how to properly cut, light and smoke your cigar. Choose from a full range of mild to full-bodied cigars, and take a few home to remember your experience.
THE SCENT OF TAMPA
On the outskirts of Ybor City you will find Seventh Avenue Apothecary, the workshop and retail outlet of artisan candle chemists and mother-daughter duo Phala and Jessica. On the rink at Amalie Arena, the Tampa Bay Lightning took home the Stanley Cup in 2004, 2020 and 2021. But that’s not the only hardware our boys have brought home. Trophies our all-star Bolts hold proud include the Art Ross Trophy, Conn Smythe Trophy and Rocket Richard Trophy, and Andrei Vasilevskiy, the best goaltender in the game, has the Vezina Trophy to prove it. SUPER MEN
There was a time, many moons ago, when the notion of a Tampa Bay sports team winning a national championship might have evoked a derisive snort. But now — after three Stanley Cups, two Super Bowl wins, two American League championships, and two Eastern Conference soccer championships — it’s “Champa Bay” all the way.
Thanks to their 31-9 win against the Kansas City Chiefs in Super Bowl LV, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers became the first team in NFL history to play—and win!—a Super Bowl hosted at their home stadium. Considered the best quarterback of all time, Tom Brady (aka the GOAT) moved down to Tampa Bay in 2020 and led the team to secure their second Super Bowl win. Busch Gardens Tampa Bay
Atrip to Tampa Bay is bound to be full of great culture, history and food, but the best vacation itineraries don’t skip on excitement and thrills. Live life a little more extreme and light up the fear centers of your brain at these spots that will have you zipping, flying. dropping and sliding your way through Tampa Bay.
Welcome to the thrill capital of Florida. With more large coasters and thrill rides than any theme park in the Sunshine State, Busch Gardens Tampa Bay is a must-visit for those who like a day of screaming from high places. From classics such as Kumba and Montu, both of which will twist and turn you into a human pretzel, to the all-new coaster king Iron Gwazi, which is the world’s fastest and steepest hybrid coaster. Will your scream just go back into your mouth down a 91-degree drop? Probably.
Adventure Island
A relaxing float down a lazy river is nice, but you go to a waterpark for the slides — and the wilder the better. Adventure Island has some amazing slides, such as Colossal Curl, the ultimate family thrill slide complete with funnel and wave elements, or my personal favorite, Vanish Point, a slide that literally pulls the mat from under you as the bottom drops out. For even more thrills, splash down Rapids Racer, a dueling waterslide, and Wahoo Remix, a new spin on an old classic.
Empower Adventures
Ziplines are a fantastic way to see Florida’s natural beauty with a touch of adrenaline, and Empower Adventures, located in the stunning Mobbly Bayou Wilderness Preserve, is a great location for the experience. High above the bayou, try
the two-and-a-half-hour zipline adventure that will have you zooming above the palm trees. Or, when the sun goes down, take a moonlight zip tour.
iFlyTampa
Jumping out of an airplane might seem thrilling to some, but that first step out of the aircraft and sticking the landing are more terrifying than anything else. The best part of skydiving is that weightless fall, and at iFly Tampa, you can do just that. Powered by powerful fans that force air through a proprietary wind tunnel, iFly propels guests of all ages (3 to 103) on a cushion of air that simulates skydiving. The fantastic staff will get you oriented and flying safely, so you can spend more of your vacation enjoying airtime.
ZooTampa at Lowry Park
Seeing animals up close is already thrilling, but ZooTampa at Lowry Park raises up the excitement level with Roaring Springs. The perfect way to cool down for the whole family, this boat ride sends you down a three-story drop and creates an epic splash. If you somehow didn’t get wet enough the first time, walk up the boardwalk and get drenched when the next boat plummets down the drop.
AL LOPEZ PARK
Even though this large central Tampa park is just a stone’s throw from Raymond James Stadium, home to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, you’ll feel like you’re a world away. The tucked-away boardwalk path circles a lake that’s home to turtles, gators, herons and ducks. Take a rest under towering slash pines or just sit on the dock looking out on the lake as the sun sets.
HILLSBOROUGH RIVER STATE PARK
For a taste of Real Florida, a visit to the Hillsborough River State Park near Zephyrhills is a must. Here, alligators sun themselves along the riverbanks and water flows and breaks along the curves of the always-changing river. Hiking trails pass Class II rapids and even include a suspension bridge built by the Civilian Conservation Corps during the Great Depression.
BOYD HILL NATURE PRESERVE
Just minutes from the beaches in St. Pete, you’ll discover a quiet park with a variety of landscapes circling tranquil Lake Maggiore. Walk past marshy wetlands or peaceful hammocks featuring Florida’s unique mix of tropical palms, saw palmetto and Spanish-moss-draped oaks. Picnic along the sparkling water of the lake or press farther on the three miles of trails, keeping an eye out for the many species of birds that can be found at this park.

TAMPA RIVERWALK
The odds are high that you’ll spot a dolphin or manatee while walking along the 2.6 miles of sidewalk through downtown Tampa. Start at the natural springs at Water Works Park and end at Sparkman Wharf, where there’s a plethora of dining and drink options. Grab an extra moment of Zen by lounging on the vast lawns at Curtis Hixon Waterfront Park or by walking the labyrinth at the nearby Tampa Convention Center.
USF BOTANICAL GARDENS
Just minutes from Tampa’s theme parks and nightlife lie 16 acres of exotic plants, including orchids, begonias, palms and carnivorous plants. The botanical gardens are part of the University of South Florida’s School of Geosciences, and they feature more than 3,000 plants, animals and natural habitats. Check the calendar before your visit, as the gardens are host to all sorts of special workshops, yoga classes, plant sales and more.
BOK TOWER GARDENS
It’s hard not to feel like you’re in a dream as you listen to the carillon’s melody ring out over the lush landscape, swans paddling past. It’s no surprise as this garden was designed by a master: Frederick Law Olmsted, who also designed New York’s Central Park. With separate milieus all over the grounds— hillside resting spots, tropical enclaves, a reflecting pool, wetland boardwalk and butterfly-attracting flowers—it’s easy to find some space and tranquility at Bok Tower Gardens.
ALAFIA RIVER STATE PARK
Mountain biking in Florida? You bet. At this state park in Lithia, there are steep grades and trails so challenging that the International Mountain Bicycling Association has given it an EPICS designation. Whether you’re a beginner or expert, there’s a trail for you. Just rent a bike at the full-service shop and hit the trails for a day full of adventure. For a break, consider fishing at one of the park’s many small lakes, where bass, bluegill and catfish abound; explore the more than 20 miles of hiking trails; or go paddling on the winding Alafia River.

IT’S IN THE CARDS
Relationship advice from the Oracle of Ybor.
By Caroline DeBruhlDear Oracle, I have a crush on my new friend “Rose,” and I can’t tell if she has a crush on me. We’re both lesbians and met two months ago through a queer film collective, and there have been times when I think she’s flirting with me, but then she’ll give me the cold shoulder. Like the other day, she ghosted me, left me on read all day, and then texted a selfie the next day like nothing happened and wanted to talk like normal. Can the cards tell me what’s going on? —Like or Like-Like
Cards: Three of Wands, The Lovers, Seven of Swords
Dear Like-Like,
Figuring out if your friend likes you or like-likes you is a stressful game. If you like-like them, it can feel maddening. If you don’t like them, you have to figure out how to gently kill their romantic feelings. Neither option is particularly fun.
For this situation, I want to start with the two minor arcana, the Three of Wands and the Seven of Swords, because they flank The Lovers.
The Three of Wands is a nostalgia card; it’s looking back at where you’ve come from before moving forward. In this situation, old feelings from past relationships might be clouding your vision.
You’ve only known each other for two months, so it makes sense for you to be a bit guarded with your feelings. But if you don’t know much about a person, it’s easy to project onto them. Which might be happening here.
The Seven of Swords is home to compulsive behaviors like substance use, self-destructive behaviors — and negative spiraling thoughts.
You mention that Rose “ghosted” you by not responding to you for a
day but then chatting the next day “like nothing happened.” What do you think happened? That she saw your text, said, “I’m gunna make this bitch yearn for me,” and waited a day to respond?
That’s possible. But it’s also possible that she saw your text when she was busy (on the phone, driving to work, watching TV) and just forgot to respond.
Is there anything you know about her as a person that suggests she’s into playing games? Or did you have past partners/crushes that did that, and that’s where your mind goes?
The final card is The Lovers, a card of unity, equality, and, yes, relationships. I can’t tell you if Rose feels the same (tarot works best for the asker), but I can tell you that if you want to date Rose, ask her out. If she says no, then you have your answer. If she says yes and you discover that you aren’t compatible, you can go back to being friends. But if things go well, then give it a shot. See if it floats.
The Lovers is also a card of equal footing. It means being in a relationship with someone who wants to be there too. If this isn’t Rose, then I have no doubt that someone else is on the horizon.
Best of luck, my dear.
Dear Oracle,
I’ve identified as bi for over 15 years now, but love my husband very much and enjoy being in a monogamous relationship. Beyond that, I sometimes feel like I’m neglecting my attraction to women, which has been dormant since I committed to my relationship. Might there be a way for me to nurture both aspects of my bisexuality while still honoring my marriage?
—Only One Half Cards: Ten of Cups, Six of Swords, Two of Cups (Reversed)
Dear Half,
In 2014, Larry King asked actress Anne Paquin — a bisexual woman married to a male vampire — if she was “a non-practicing bisexual.”
While one can wonder what exactly that term entails (no brunch on David Bowie’s birthday?), he did articulate a particular type of biphobia that’s prevalent, chiefly: bisexuality is for singles. Once you’re in a relationship, you’re either gay or straight.
Now the question of “what it means to be queer” and “what it means to be monogamous” are two VERY complex questions with varied answers that go beyond the scope of tarot and my word count. But I know those two things are tied for you — probably because bisexuality is usually discussed only in terms of dating.
In your letter, you mention how much you love your husband. I can see that clearly with the celebratory Ten of Cups. This is a happy marriage, one that you entered enthusiastically. But to have that Ten, you have to give up the Two of Cups (a.k.a. new romantic relationships.)
The Six of Swords is a secret “death” card in that it requires a lot of change and letting go of older thoughts. If all goes well in your marriage (blissful love, no divorce, dying on the same day at age 106), you won’t have another relationship. You won’t have a wife. You’ll be in a marriage that will read to strangers as “straight,” and people might dismiss your identity be-
cause of it. That does come with some specific bisexual grief.
But your identity is yours. You’re still bi, even if people don’t believe you.
It’s difficult to say what you should do about your “neglected” attraction toward women because it seems okay for a monogamous
person to not want to sleep with other people. Are you still attracted to a variety of men? Or are you just really feeling your husband?
I don’t get the sense that you want an open relationship, so you’re left with that tricky question of “what does it mean to be queer” when sex is off the table. To you, it might mean having a community of queer women to be (platonically) emotionally connected with. It might mean exploring fantasies during solo play. (Or with your husband if he’s down.) It might be engaging your identity in other ways, like through art.
However you explore, I hope you talk to your husband about this. In this loving marriage, he can offer support, even if he doesn’t quite understand.
Take care, my love.
