Da Cure

Photos by Jack Cymbryla and Dave Decker

It was a busy week in Tampa concerts, and while fans of The Cure filed into Amalie Arena to see the decades-running U.K. rock band The Cure make a triumphant return the to the Bay area, the local hip-hop scene marked the 17th anniversary of Ybor City’s open mic series Da Cypher. Shock rocks

Jobsite Theater is definitely kind of like a little family, but the ties go a little deeper when it comes to the return of the company’s 2016 Halloween rock musical production of the Lizzie Borden story. Kandyce Walker (who plays Alice Russell) is the niece of Bay area bassist and theater regular Kenny Walker, while Jobsite’s Assistant Stage Manager is Josephine Midulla Reller, daughter of Tempus Projects’ Tracy Midulla and Jobsite’s first composer-in-residence, Paul Reller (who actually founded the first Tampa band named Clang). A six-piece rock band soundtracks this rendition featuring original cast members Colleen Cherry and Heather Krueger, who play Lizze and Emma Borden, respectively. Lizzie, July 12-Aug. 6. $29.50 & up. Brewtiful music

In a fast-changing region, there might not be a town that’s evolved—for better and worse— faster than Dunedin. However, a constant for nearly three now, has been Dunedin Brewery. Starting Friday, the microbrewery (Florida’s first) cuts the cake on 27 years in the biz with a pair of new beers on tap (“Pineapple Salad,” “Electra Gose”), plus three days of music on two stages. Three of the five acts—Road To Nowhere, Deadseat, Know Your Enemy—are tribute bands made up of the Bay’s best musicians (Talking Heads, Grateful Dead, Rage Against the Machine), while the rest play jam-funk (Sauce Pocket) and off-the-wall country and hip-hop (Stick & Ditty). There’s never a cover at DunBrew. Dunedin Brewery 27th anniversary. Friday-Sunday, July 7-9. No cover. Dunedin Brewery, 937 Douglas Ave., Dunedin. dunedinbrewery.com—Ray Roa

Walk it out

During the second Saturday of each month, art galleries and studios across St. Pete open their doors to the public, giving participants an intimate look at the creative processes and in-progress works of dozens of local artists. A collaboration between the Central Arts District, Grand Central District, Warehouse Arts District, Uptown Arts District and downtown Waterfront District, art-lovers of The ‘Burg can often enjoy the opening night of different exhibitions or chat with artists themselves during the city-wide Second Saturday Art Walk. For some venues, this is the only time the public is allowed in certain private studios. Second Saturday Art Walk, Saturday, July 8. 5 p.m.-9 p.m. Free. Chop it up

For the 8th year in a row, South Tampa’s Epicurean Hotel hosts a a series of local “Chopped”like culinary competitions that benefit Feeding Tampa Bay, a popular nonprofit that aims to end hunger across a 10-county span in Central Florida. The first round of Epic Chef pits Evan Lipman of popular St. Pete restaurant Wild Child against Josue Collado of the Bib Gourmand-winning Rooster & the Till. Each dish—which consists of mystery ingredients picked by a child currently served at a Feeding Tampa Bay Summer Food Service Partner— will be assessed by presentation, creativity and flavor, and a panel of esteemed judges will decide which restaurant goes on to round two of the competition. Other “Epic Chef” events are hosted at The Epicurean throughout the rest of July, including a battle between Noble Rice vs. Bandit Coffee Co., an all-star competition featuring past winners, and a contest between some of Tampa Bay’s best executive chefs. In addition to being part of the competition’s live audience, tickets to Epic Chef also include a multi-course meal with wine pairings. Epic Chef Showdown, Monday, July 10. 6:30 p.m. $350 for a package of two tickets. Epicurean Hotel, 1207 S Howard Ave., Tampa. Epicureanhotel.com—Kyla

It’s not been an easy 12 months for the Tampa Bay house music scene. Last November, it lost Pedro M Muniz, who created the runway for international house music to land in Tampa. And last month it was dealt the unexpected passing of Lyndon Uy, a L8 Night Flights resident who opened the door and always lent an ear for anyone who wanted to dive into the world of house music. For L8’s fifth anniversary, Uy’s DJ family—including Jason Kitchen, JB Nicotera, Taetro, and Curtis Viscome—will spin in his honor. POLITICS ISSUES OPINION

Speak now

Black USF faculty group says administration has been silent in the face of racism.

Last month, Gov. Ron DeSantis signed SB 266 into law, banning funds for any Diversity, Equity, Inclusion (DEI) programs at state universities and colleges. A statement from the Black Faculty and Staff Association (BFSA) to the University of South Florida alleges racism and silence towards faculty in the wake of SB 266. The statement—available in full at the bottom of this post—was written with Black affinity groups, the Committee on Black Affairs (COBA), and the Black Employee Steering Committees (BESTIES).

“Simply put, silence in the face of discrimination and racism is the same as agreement, and the silence of University of South Florida administration before and since the passing of HB/999 and SB266 is deafening,” reads the statement. “Administrators tout their dedication to diversity, equity, and inclusion, while not openly condemning SB/266.”

“Once the BOG regulations are created, we will be able to determine how the new law impacts USF,” Johnson told CL via email. “We recognize this process causes some uncertainty, and we will continue to keep our community updated as soon as more information is available.”

LOCAL NEWS

BFSA said many who’ve left cited mental illness from work stress as their cause for leaving. The group said it no longer holds its regular meetings on the USF-run Microsoft Teams for fear of being monitored. Some BFSA faculty said they no longer include their title on their email signature, for fear of being targeted. The last six months has shown that fear isn’t unfounded.

through public records request, USF President Rhea Law spoke to staff about the recent arrests.

“It’s not the content and what they were concerned about, they were concerned about this legislation [SB 266], we’re concerned about it too,” Law said in the video. “But we were working on it, hopefully in a productive way to get a result we can all live with. They, on the other hand, were being disruptive.”

The meeting was ahead of the students’ code of conduct hearings and Law told faculty she heard that staff thought the protest was an “active shooter situation.”

who is also Jewish, tracked the increase in antisemitism to former President Donald Trump. Deeson described it as “self-censorship.”

A spokesperson for the Committee on Black Affairs (COBA) also spoke to CL anonymously and said they no longer encourage Black students to come to USF.

“My own conscience won’t allow me to assist in recruiting new Black students at USF, based solely on the climate that exists here,” the spokesperson told CL. “Don’t come to USF. Don’t come to any Florida state university.”

“All the organizations have met with the administration repeatedly,” a spokesperson— speaking to Creative Loafing Tampa Bay on condition of anonymity, out of fear of retaliation from USF—told CL. “It’s not like they don’t know what’s happening. They may say they’re unaware or try to give you some statistics but what we know is there is a Black exodus at USF.”

In its own statement, USF told CL it remains committed to providing access and opportunities for individuals of all backgrounds.

“USF strives to provide a welcoming environment on our campuses where everyone can experience a sense of belonging and has the resources they need to be successful,” Althea Johnson, USF’s Director Of Media Relations told CL via email. “Throughout the past several months, USF leaders met with numerous university and community groups to share updates on proposed legislation and to listen. Their perspectives are important to understand as we regularly engage in conversations with the Board of Governors (BOG) and our elected officials about higher education in our state.”

Regarding SB 266, Johnson told CL that after the law takes effect on July 1, the Florida Board of Governors (BOG) is required to develop several regulations that will guide how state universities implement different aspects of the law.

In March, USF arrested and charged five students, also known as the “Tampa 5,” with felonies after they protested for diversity, equity and inclusion outside president Rhea Law’s office. In a video obtained by Creative Loafing

Not long after, one of the Tampa 5 was fired from their job at USF. In April, Tiktok and WeChat were banned at USF after the Florida Board of Governors approved an emergency regulation earlier this year. In another instance, veteran investigative journalist Mike Deeson told CL that his comments were censored on a recent university podcast. Asked on the podcast to talk about the rise of antisemitism, Deeson,

At this point BFSA and the Black affinity groups say they just want to let others at their organizations know they aren’t alone.

“Most of us would feel better if the leadership at state universities would at least make public statements saying this new legislation is bad for the university,” the spokesperson said. “They’ll say it behind closed doors, but they won’t say it in earshot of the Governor or any other politician.”

Dive deeper

Where to celebrate National Dive Bar Day in Tampa Bay.

National Dive Bar Day is on Friday, July 7 and there’s no shortage of essential dive bars in Pinellas and Hillsborough (see p. 27 & 31). But there are of course varying opinions about what constitutes a dive bar in modern times. The internet broadly defines a dive bar as “a small, unglamorous, eclectic, old-style drinking establishment with inexpensive drinks.” The late Anthony Bourdain once described some of his favorite New York City dives as places where “it’s okay to drink during the day,” and even an establishment where there is “an element of danger.”

While it’s true that prices have gone up everywhere and less people these days are interested in roughing it, there are still a few good spots left where you can get a drink for

a fair price and not be surrounded with the influencer crowd.

With the life of Ernest—a longtime resident iguana of Mahuffer’s on Indian Rocks Beach who passed away in November—in our hearts, we’ve rounded up 10 essential Tampa Bay dive bars not on Creative Loafing Tampa Bay’s past lists.

We’re talking places where the owners make their own pickles, or use wood burning fireplaces to keep the place warm in January. The places that open at 8 a.m. for your hair of the dog or make you walk through a back alley to get in.

These are the holes for advanced dive bar goers looking to go even deeper. So hit that ATM, raise a PBR and dive in (and don’t forget to wash your hair afterwards since most of these spots still allow smoking).

Anclote River Boat Club The Boat Club, as regulars affectionately call it, is quite possibly the diviest bar on this list. If your car doesn’t bottom out trying to access the treacherous parking lot, you’ll notice an actual wood burning fireplace just inside the entrance for that one week it gets cold in January. The entire building seems ready to give way into the river it’s situated on, so you may feel buzzed before you’ve even had a beer. Bring some bug spray and enjoy a slightly cold domestic on the dock. 1761 Beckett Wy, Tarpon Springs. @ancloteriverboatclub on Facebook

National Dive Bar Day

Friday, July 7. Bring cash

Bar Mastiff If you’re a longtime dive bar patron, you may have visited Bar Mastiff when it was known as Marsha’s Wayside Inn. The drinks start flowing here at 8 a.m., so it’s an apt place to get a hair of the dog from the spirited bartenders while listening to the regulars poke fun at each other. Every day from 4 p.m.-7 p.m. you’ll get a raffle ticket for each drink ordered,

Flamingo Sports Bar This St. Pete institution has been open in some form or another in the same location since 1937 and is said to have been a haunt of the late writer Jack Kerouac. It’s easy to see how the Flamingo could have been the perfect place for him to retreat with his thoughts, given its dark and smoke-filled interior and complete lack of pretension. The blue collar regulars are likely to regale you with tales of the past, that is if they’re not involved in a game of pool. 1230 9th St. N, St. Petersburg. @stpetesmokingbar on Facebook

Franks Sports Bar This Pinellas County dive, located in an unassuming strip center, has all of the makings of a great neighborhood watering hole. You’ve got the accommodating Franks continued on page 27

regulars who are quick to introduce their fellow comrades, a kind-but-no-bullshit bartender who also plays the role of cook during day shifts, and well-priced booze that your new friends might even treat you to. Food is offered during select hours, so call ahead to make sure they’re serving if you need a burger to go with your Bud. 4201 62nd Ave. N, Pinellas Park. Franks Sports Bar on Facebook Harbor Bar This Safety Harbor dive serves shots in plastic cups but offers a decent liquor selection, including the Italian amaro Fernet, a rare sighting in most dive bars. The rectangular bar is usually packed with regulars smoking Marlboros and bullshitting, while the service is fast and friendly. If you like pickles, you’ll be pleased to hear the owner makes his own, which means your pickleback just got a locally made upgrade. 840 Main St., Safety Harbor. @harborbar1 on Facebook

Lana’s Place This Treasure Island bar is situated just behind the popular VIP Mexican restaurant, so it’s a great place to pregame while you’re waiting for your table. Once your eyes have adjusted to the extremely dark interior, have a seat next to a sun-soaked regular and order a cheap shot or something from Lana’s decent selection of craft beers. If you haven’t stopped in post-pandemic, you’ll be surprised to find that the place no longer allows indoor smoking but has expanded its outdoor seating area. 109 107th Ave., Treasure Island 727-360-0287

Seabreeze Lounge You know a place is going to be divey when the only indication of its presence in a strip mall is the word “lounge” in unassuming capital red letters on the facade. Seabreeze is a haven for folks who want to enjoy cheap drinks and a cigarette, but don’t sleep on the delicious “snakebite” chicken wings if you like your BBQ sauce with a little tang. Along with daily specials, there’s a pool table, darts and a bookshelf by the bathroom with random titles in case you want to pretend you’re being productive. 30625 U.S.-Hwy 19 N, Palm Harbor.

@seabreezelounge on Facebook

Shadrack’s This long standing Pass-a-Grille staple is the perfect place to hit before or after your next beach day, as it’s only a short walk from the sand. Open since 1972, “Shads” has welcomed locals and tourists with cheap domestics, decent liquor pours and camaraderie for decades. The two pool tables are always hopping and smoking is only allowed outside, which makes it an accommodating spot for all members of your crew. Shadrack’s also has a seriously impressive bloody mary toppings bar the first Sunday of each month from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. 114 8th Ave., St. Pete Beach. @ShadracksPAG on Facebook

Skip’s Bar Located in the heart of downtown Dunedin, Skip’s is the perfect place to grab

a cold one on a hot day. This cash only beer bar still has a coin-operated jukebox and serves PBR bottles in a brown paper bag for a truly authentic dive bar experience. Another fun thing Skip’s does is offer half off drinks every Wednesday if you wear your Skip’s T-shirt, which they sell for $15 each—an investment that pays for itself. 371 Main St., Dunedin. Skips Bar & Grill on Facebook

Smugglers Tavern If you think Tierra Verde is all marinas and seafood restaurants, you’ll be surprised to know there’s at least one true dive bar here, with a to-go package license to boot. Smugglers is another dark and smoky spot that typically caters to locals looking for a lowkey time, but even first timers will be welcomed with a strong pour and friendly, no frills service. 1120 Pinellas Bayway S, St. Petersburg. smugglerstierraverde.com

20 legit Hillsborough County dive bars, and why you should get a drink at all of them

Babalouies Grille & Sports Garden This University of South Florida area bar has countless TVs for the game you’re looking to catch and bar games such as darts and pool. It also offers typical bar fare, so you might find yourself washing that rum and Coke down with fried appetizers or some spicy chicken wings. It opens at 11 a.m. everyday, so it’s a good spot to get that much needed hair of the dog. 1913 E Bearss Ave., Tampa, 813-9711243. @bobalouiestampa on Facebook

Barefoot Billy’s Friendly Tavern If you’re not careful you may drive right past the parking lot of this South Tampa watering hole on Gandy Blvd. From the street you’ll notice the outside of the bar is painted with tropical scenes of palm trees and a setting sun, but once inside you’ll find a dimly lit space with wood paneled walls and TVs to watch your favorite teams. While they offer beer and wine only, they do have flavored jello shots, which were deemed “strong as hell” by the bartender. A large patio area out back has plenty of picnic tables where you can enjoy your beer with your furry friend. 3120 W Gandy Blvd., Tampa, 813-831-8703. @barefootbillys.friendlytavern on Facebook

Beer Shed Situated right on the Alafia River, this is a great place to have a cold one on a nice day. It’s a beer-and-wine-only spot that provides carpet samples for you to rest your drink on and an adjacent snack shack that offers up BBQ on most days. This is definitely a good ol’ boys bar, so check your pretentiousness at the door and just relax.

The Dirty Shame The Shame offers a decent selection of higher quality liquor (including the bartender’s personal favorite digestif, Underberg), as well as some great craft beer options on tap or to-go. You can smoke inside but the high ceilings and well ventilated bar room offer respite, as does the outdoor patio. It’s one of the last remaining bars that trusts its patrons with steel tipped darts and also has two pool tables. 1929 E 7th Ave, Ybor City, 813247-7930. dirtyshameybor.com

Bilmar Station This strip center spot in Town N’ Country has all the makings of a great neighborhood bar. The service is friendly, the food exceeds pub standards (think house made sauces for your wings) and the drinks are strong enough to rival what you’d make at home. There are several dart boards and other bar games but no pool table, likely because of the aforementioned heavy pour. If you can drink 99 beers in

The Dog Saloon You may remember hearing about this place when it was called Red Dog Saloon and the bartenders still wore risque attire. The Dog is a full liquor bar with an extensive draft selection and trivia on Tuesdays. It’s a popular place to watch a game because of the abundance of TV’s, including individual sets for most of the suspended wooden tables. They offer a variety of bar games and a full food menu as well. 3311 W Bay to Bay Blvd., Tampa, 813-832-8211. @ dogsaloonsouthtampa on Facebook

First Chance Last Chance Located just off the hustle and bustle of 7th Avenue, this spot has long been a go-to for Ybor service industry folks before or after their shifts. Hub Bar This downtown staple with an attached package store has been voted Best Dive Bar in the Bay on and off for several years. The Hub is about as iconic of a dive that you’ll find in the area, with a loyal following that up until recently included the late and dearly beloved regular of over 30 years, Texas Tim. Locals know that you never order a double here because the pour is probably the strongest in town, so don’t take it personally if you get cut off after your second Long Island.

I Don’t Care Bar & Grill This regular’s bar is tucked away in a shopping center on Manhattan Avenue in South Tampa, so you might want to keep your GPS on until you’ve safely parked. Once inside, you’re likely to be greeted with a welcoming remark and maybe even an invitation to request some songs on the jukebox. If you’re a dart player you are sure to find a worthy opponent to entertain you while you drink your extremely

cheap domestic beer (which is inevitably served in a koozie). It also has food that comes highly recommended, particularly the chicken wings. 4556 S Manhattan Ave., Tampa, 813-832-3321. @idontcarebartampa on Facebook

Pete’s Place South There’s pretty much always something going on here, whether it’s the three times a week karaoke, live bands or a rowdy but fun group of regulars enjoying the extensive happy hour. Reservoir If you’re a fan of this place it’s probably because you appreciate the “no BS” attitude that the bartenders and regulars all seem to have. The prices are extremely reasonable, the music is usually an eclectic mix and Reservoir Dogs is likely playing on loop. Vietnamese restaurant Bamboozle soft opens in Seminole Heights, and more local foodie news.

After waiting a year and some change, a new Seminole Heights restaurant has finally opened its doors. Located inside of a revamped bungalow next to Tampa’s beloved Bo’s Ice Cream, Vietnamese restaurant Bamboozle has opened its newest location at 7107 N Florida Ave. During its soft opening phase, Bamboozle’s Seminole Heights restaurant is open for dine-in, take out and online ordering from noon-8 p.m. Monday-Saturday.

Loyal customers of Bamboozle will recognize the new Seminole Heights restaurant’s menu, which include a variety of fresh spring rolls, piping hot bowls of pho, bánh mis, curries and traditional

Vietnamese salads. Since wellness is at the forefront of Bamboozle’s mission, its menu caters to a variety of gluten-free and vegan diets as well. A drink menu of various milk teas, fruit smoothies, iced coffee and lemonade joins its spread of healthy Vietnamese fare.

While Bamboozle’s Seminole Heights location gets up and running, its Channelside restaurant at 109 N 12th St. will remain closed for the summer so its team can focus on “maintenance and repairs,” according to its social media.

OPENINGS & CLOSINGS

Bamboozle owner Lynn Pham told Creative Loafing Tampa Bay that her newest restaurant will host an official grand opening celebration within the next few weeks, after it works out all of the soft opening kinks. Pham—a Seminole Heights resident herself—opened the first Bamboozle in downtown Tampa in 2008, which closed last year after its entire building was purchased by a developer and subsequently razed. She opened Bamboozle Tea Lounge in Channelside a few years later, which was eventually remodeled into a second full-service restaurant.

For the latest information on Bamboozle, its newest restaurant, and the reopening of its Channelside location, head to its Facebook at @BamboozleLiving or Instagram at @eatbamboozle. Bamboozle’s catering services are still up and running, too, and all inquiries can be made on its website.

plans to open at 226 S Blvd., right around the corner from Michelin-starred Koya.

While Italian-Japanese food might be a new concept to Tampa Bay’s foodies, Wafu-Italian or “Itameshi-style” cuisine has been a fine dining trend throughout Europe and Asia for quite some time. Kinjo’s full-service bar loaded with wine, sake and spirits will be joined by an intimate menu of fresh pastas, crudo, sashimi, and a variety of meats and cheeses cured in-house.

Co-owner Eric Fralick—who’s opening Kinjo with his wife and business partner Adriana Fralick—tells CL that their newest concept is slated to debut in the late summer or early fall, perhaps September.

“Kinjo” is Japanese for “neighbor”— we love that name as it literally is a neighbor to both Koya and Noble Rice,” he explains. “We will have a full bar, dedicated climate controlled wine room, and handmade pasta from a machine that we flew in from Italy.”

According to Kinjo’s newly-formed social media pages, it will also host live jazz music on the weekend after it debuts later this year. Renderings from Tampa-based architecture and design firm MICO works—which has designed a multitude of local restaurants including Noble Rice, Koya, Gangchu, Forbici and Rooster & the Till—depict Kinjo as a sleek, dimly-lit space adorned with wine bottles, red accents and pops of greenery.

In 2021, Koya and Rocca—restaurants that hold two of Tampa’s three Michelin stars—hosted an exclusive Wafu-Italian tasting dinner, and we can only hope dishes like prosciutto- topped mochi, steamed egg custard carbonara and dryaged duck ragu make their way onto Kinjo’s menu later this year. For the latest information on Hyde Park’s newest hotspot, head to @kinjo_tampa on Instagram to keep up with its summer build out.

Tampa Bay’s newest Topgolf is now open in St. Pete

One of the best ways to beat the summer heat has finally opened its doors in The ‘Burg. Tampa Bay’s newest Topgolf location is located at 220 Carillon Pkwy. N in St. Petersburg, near the St. Pete–Clearwater International Airport. According to its website, St. Pete’s 67,000 square-foot Topgolf celebrated its grand opening last Friday, although it soft opened a few days before that. Topgolf’s new, three-story facility features over 200 TVs, a full-service bar and restaurant, a rooftop terrace with fire pits, a variety of golf-related games and over 100 climate-controlled driving range bays.

Although Topgolf is known for its fancy driving range technology, its restaurant and bar dishes out a menu of high-end bar food that might warrant a visit, too. The entertainment destination offers burgers, sandwiches, salads and shareables like buffalo chicken dip, mac and cheese bites, tacos, flatbreads and various flavors of wings. Its bar features all of the expected

beer and wine options, in addition to a menu of signature cocktails.

The opening of St. Pete’s Topgolf was announced almost four years ago, and was originally slated to happen in the fall of 2020. But Topgolf’s future neighbors, residents of the Carillon Office Park, sued the City of St. Pete for approving changes to its site plan “without notice, public participation or public hearings,” according to the Tampa Bay Times. The only other Topgolf location in Tampa Bay resides in Brandon.

Predalina also offers a variety of different dining experiences from weekend brunch, and lunch and dinner—folks can browse the restaurant’s many menus on predalina.com.

OPENINGS & CLOSINGS

On Mondays, Wednesdays and Thursdays, Topgolf charges $32/hr from 10 a.m.-noon, $42/hr from noon-5 p.m. and $54/hr from 5 p.m.-midnight for its bay rentals, with slightly more expensive rates on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays. On Tuesdays, all bays can be reserved for half of the normal weekday price.

Predalina’s opening was announced last spring, with plans to offer a small retail and decor section in addition to its full-service restaurant. Its website states that its retail area will sell “hand-crafted wares, unique home decor and special gifts.”

This upcoming Water Street restaurant is the latest eatery from Oxford Commons, a local hospitality group behind other Tampa concepts like Oxford Exchange, The Library, social club Stovall House and the Current Hotel. Owners of Oxford Commons, Blake Casper and Alison Casper Adams, sold all of

“With heavy hearts, we’ll be closing the doors of our Tampa facility on Friday, June 30th. But fear not, because we’re about to embark on an exciting new adventure,” 7venth Sun wrote on Facebook last week. “This means we’ll be able to explore new and innovative beers while ensuring you have even better access to crowd favorites…We’re always ready to welcome you in Dunedin, where our signature saisons and funky fun beers will continue flowing.” The announcement ends with 7venth Sun again teasing “the next phase” of its business.

The brewery’s flagship Pinellas location will stay up and running across the bridge at 1012 Broadway in Dunedin.

The woman-owned brewery dishes out everything from saisons, lagers and IPAs to barrel-aged brews, sours and fruity weisses— including some of its most popular brews like the Control Freak pale ale and Headbanger IPA. 7venth Sun Brewery owner Devon Krep opened the Seminole Heights location in 2017, helping cement the neighborhood’s reputation as a go-to spot for locally-crafted beer. She initially launched 7venth Sun Brewery with two partners who have since then left the business, according to its website. The massive, 18,000 square-foot building houses a 15-barrel brewing system, 28 taps and a spacious taproom, and is also known for hosting a variety of local food trucks throughout the week.

7venth Sun’s Dunedin location—which recently celebrated its 10th anniversary–remains open from 2 p.m.-10 p.m. Monday-Thursday, noon-midnight Fridays and Saturdays, and noon-10 p.m. on Sundays.

After 45 years in business, South Tampa’s Thailand Restaurant will close next month

The owners of one beloved Tampa restaurant are finally ready to retire and close doors for good (but we’re just happy they won’t be displaced by more condos). After 45 years of dishing out hearty curries, egg rolls and fried rice platters out of its space at 5252 S Dale Mabry Hwy., South Tampa’s Thailand Restaurant will close next month.

New Mediterranean restaurant Predalina is now open in Tampa’s Water Street

It’s no secret that Water Street is an everexpanding mecca of retail and hospitality, and its latest addition has recently opened its doors. Located at 1001 E Cumberland Ave. in the heart of Water Street Tampa, high-end Mediterranean restaurant Predalina celebrated its grand opening on Wednesday, July 5. “Prepare to indulge in extraordinary flavors, unmatched ambiance, and impeccable service,” Predalina said in last week’s opening announcement.

The newly-opened restaurant specializes in “seafood-driven Mediterranean cuisine,” boasting entrees like seared scallops, lobster skewers and flank steak, in addition to small plates like smoked hamachi crudo, pan-seared greek cheese

7venth Sun closes Seminole Heights taproom, but Dunedin brewery remains open

Seminole Heights recently lost one of its craft beer mainstays. 7venth Sun Brewery’s Tampa location at 6809 N Nebraska Ave. closed its doors—but don’t fret, because its beloved beers aren’t going anywhere.

A few months ago, owners Amnuay and Moo Thambundit announced that they would be retiring soon, and switched to solely take-out orders in May. “As many of you know, we will be retiring soon. We have served you all for over 44 years and are greatly appreciative of your long-time patronage to us,” the Thambundits wrote on Facebook in April. The last day to order take-out from Thailand Restaurant is Friday, July 28.

The Thambundits were once fixtures at CL’s Best of the Bay, where their daughter, C Thambundit, used to help run the sampling. “The best memories I have are from trading food with other restaurants at the end of the night!,” she told CL.

The Thai restaurant still offers a large menu of papaya salads, spring rolls, pad Thai, curries continued on page 39

A recent story from WTSP outlines Thailand Restaurants’ entire history in Tampa, even explaining how Thambundits fell in love back in the 70s. The husband and wife duo opened their restaurant in 1979 and claim to be the first restaurateurs to bring traditional Thai fare to the Tampa Bay area. OPENINGS & CLOSINGS

“This unexpected turn of events has led me to reassess what’s most important in life, and prompted me to make the difficult decision to close our beloved Zoie’s for the sake of my health and well being,” Baker wrote on Facebook. “It’s been an honor and pleasure to provide you with a place to gather, enjoy good food and create lasting memories. Our loyal guests, you have turned this restaurant from a dream into a reality.”

Zoie’s made its longawaited debut on Central Avenue in the fall of 2022, after a full year of construction and permittingrelated delays. Now it’s listed as “permanently closed” on Google.

Zoie’s owner closes St. Pete restaurant

Last week, the owner of restaurant and event venue Zoie’s took to social media to deliver some bad news. Zoie’s—located in St. Pete’s Grand Central District at 2245 Central Ave.— is now closed. Owner and operator Jeff Baker disclosed that a recent cancer diagnosis led him to close the restaurant he spent endless months building out.

In addition to its brunch, lunch and dinner menus loaded with comforting Southern dishes, the 3,000 square-foot restaurant was also known for hosting regular entertainment, drag shows, karaoke nights and live piano performances. Baker named his debut restaurant after his beloved Chihuahua Zoie, who can usually be found in his arms or following closely behind him. While Zoie’s was an LGBTQ-friendly space that featured different

types of queer performances, Baker insisted it was a restaurant for all walks of life, coining its motto “A place for everyone.”

Last fall, Baker told CL that both Zoie’s decor and menu were inspired by the concept of Southern hospitality, since a majority of his family hails from Tennessee and North Carolina.

“Zoie’s has always been more than a restaurant. It’s a brand that stands for community and goodwill,” Baker explained in his farewell announcement. “We’ve had the privilege of partnering with numerous local organizations, contributing towards making our community a better place, and this is something that I will always be proud of.

After 40 years, South Tampa’s Chubby’s Super Subs & Pizza has closed

South Tampa just lost another locallyowned favorite. Chubby’s Super Subs & Pizza, located at 5023 Bayshore Blvd. adjacent Ballast Point Park, has been dishing out beloved sandwiches and slices for the last four decades. The owners took to Facebook a few weeks ago to announce the fast casual restaurant’s imminent closure.

“It is with a heavy heart that I announce the closing of Chubby’s Super Subs & Pizza. A staple of Ballast point for over 40 years, it will be sad to see it go. We invite you to stop by anytime in the next 8 days to share any stories you might have about Chubby’s— we would love to hear them,” Chubby’s wrote. “We will miss all of our customers, best part of the job.”

Friday, June 30 was Chubby’s last day open in South Tampa.

Its farewell post refers to the restaurant’s prized “Steak Bomb” sandwich, loaded with chopped steak, sautéed onions, mushrooms, green peppers, American cheese and salami. In addition to its signature sandwich, Chubby’s is also known for its made-to-order pizza, salads, pastas, and both hot and cold subs.

In late 2022, restaurant owners Christi O’Malley and Michael Dickinson celebrated Chubby’s 40th anniversary on Bayshore Boulevard, telling ABC Action News that the secret to their longtime success was “consistency.” When Chubby’s opened back in 1982, the entire restaurant was apparently clown-themed. Today, a lone clown statue hangs out by the bathroom as a nod to its original gimmick.

Photographer Ryan Berger opens first solo show in Ybor City.

The loss of a parent affects people in different ways, and photographer Ryan Berger lost any drive to make photos after the death of his mother. The idea of trying to do a show was nowhere in my head for a very long time,” he told Creative Loafing Tampa Bay.

There’s No Way Out But Through w/Blacksmith/Get With This/Postdrome

In fact, the last show he did was pre-Covid at Tampa Heights’ Cafe Hey. It featured some of his favorite bands, including emo outfit Blacksmith, which also broke up and went on hiatus, with some members eventually starting a new group,

Postdrome. One lyric, “there’s no way out but through,” spoke to him and epitomized Berger’s headspace since the lost of his mother. The song even inspired him to make photos and put together another show, but under one condition: “Postdrome had to play, after all the show was named after lyrics from one of their songs,” Berger added.

The band agreed and Blacksmith even decided to get back together for the show which opens in Ybor City this weekend. Have a look at selects from the show below.

The Zachary Bartholomew Trio The piano-playing professor of music at Florida Memorial University has been praised by the late Ray Coussins—an accompanist for Frank Sinatra—and has taught at a handful of Miamiarea universities. Dr. Bartholomew just staged a Chick Corea tribute in Georgia, and will change gears when his trio—including bassist Marty Quinn and drummer Rodolfo Zuniga— performs the music of modern jazz legends Thelonious Monk and Bud Powell. (Side Door at Palladium Theater, St. Petersburg)

Luke Combs w/Riley Green/Lainey Wilson/Flatland Cavalry/Brent Cobb In February 2021, Combs—playing a two-night stand at Ray Jay this week—came under fire when his past use of the confederate flag came to light after he tried to explain “The Great Divide,” a Billy Strings collaboration. “It isn’t meant to be political or try and tell you

what to think or believe; that’s not my job,” Combs wrote. Margo Price, who was among the artists to push back on Combs’ statement about not being political, also shared a Combs social media post where he quoted another user’s comment about Asians. Combs has since apologized for his use of the confederate flag and has regularly appeared at the top of the Billboard charts. His new cover of Tracy Chapman’s “Fast Car finds Combs working outside of the country genre and sits at No. 10 on Billboard’s Hot 100 chart. Covering Riley Green and Flatland Cavalry’s opening duties on night one will be Gary Allan. (Raymond James Stadium, Tampa)

Sad Summer Festival: Taking Back Sunday/The Maine/L.S. Dunes/PVRIS/LS

Dunes/Hot Mulligan/Mom Jeans/Stand

Atlantic/Cliffdiver Rock fans who felt that March’s Innings Fest was too contemporary finally have a festival to call their own. The sophomore date of the third-ever Sad Summer Festival tour goes down at Coachman Park’s brand-new outdoor venue, and this year, emo royalty Taking Back Sunday—fresh off of opening a handful of dates for My Chemical Romance’s long-awaited reunion tour—headlines. Also on the bill are repeat Sad Summer offenders Hot Mulligan and The Maine, along with the likes of L.S Dunes (comprised of members of My Chem, Coheed and Cambria,

Circa Survive and Thursday), and PVRIS, the latter having visited Tampa three separate times in 2017. (The Sound, Clearwater)

Starletta w/Riot House/Summer Hoop

Take the synths and overproduced percussion of ‘80s new wave, and cross them with emotionally startling vocals spitting straightforward lyrics, and you get Starletta, the indie-pop project of ex-Edorra drummer-slash-songwriter Billy Duganne. He just announced his debut solo album Neon Cowboy, due late this month and described as a sequel to his sentimental “Crying In Miami” single. (Crowbar, Ybor City)

The Waymores I can’t think of anyone who wouldn’t hear shades of June Carter and Johnny Cash in the bloodstream of this Atlanta-based husband-and-wife duo. The Waymores’ upcoming Greener Pastures album has plenty of slide guitar, a few organ licks, and even a little bit of rockabilly thrown in. The record—produced by Shel Talmy, who has brought early hits from both The Kinks and The Who to life—doesn’t release until late August, but it’s almost impossible to imagine that Willie Heath Neal and Kira Annalise won’t be doing sneak peeks at this no cover, reservations suggested, gig. A Brother’s Revival: An Allman Brothers Experience Jaimoe may be the only original member of The Allman Brothers Band still on the road, but the drummer isn’t the only one keeping the southern-rock royalty alive, you know. Enlightened Rouges-era bassist David Goldflies is expanding on the band’s legacy, with a repertoire featuring ex-Outlaws guitarist Chris Anderson, and former Dickey Betts vocalist Mike Kach, and will rip out tunes from all across the Allmans’ career in Largo’s favorite intimate venue. (Central Park Performing Arts Center, Largo)

Ethos of Aldissi w/Sea of Niche Tampa gets a double dose of keyboardist-composer Anthony Grant Aldissi’s future jazz project this weekend. First with this outdoor show alongside the brand new Sea Of Niche outfit fronted by Bay area bass savant Rugawd, and then again on Sunday inside a Seminole Heights vintage and book shop, The Far Forest. (Shuffle, Tampa)

Friends 4 Hillsborough County

Conservation: Same Day Delivery Orchestra w/Circa 96/Kevin Siebel/ Jeremy Gloff/Tension Electric/Deb Ruby/Marc Ganancias For its fifth benefit show, the Friends 4 collective—which has organized to raise money for domestic violence nonprofits, the ACLU, and abortion access—sets its sights on the environment. This time, Paul Jensen, formerly of hardcore band Left Behind, takes the reins to collect dough for Friends of the County Parks a charity that works hand in hand with the an K. Platt Environmental Lands Acquisition and Protection Program, which works “to preserve and protect endangered and environmentally sensitive and significant lands in Hillsborough County.” Jensen, in a press release, said, ““In a tide of urban sprawl these folks help keep the wild heart of Hillsborough County pumping.” Keeping the tunes pumping at the concert are Same Day Delivery Orchestra, playing string arrangements of other local artists’ music, punk band Circa 96, songwriter Kevin Siebel and more. (Hooch and Hive, Tampa)

Matchbox Twenty You would think that at this point in time, every show that was postponed due to COVID-19 concerns in 2020 has been fulfilled, in one way or another. Well, think again. Rob Thomas’ Orlandobased rock posse announced a gig at the ol’ Gary in January 2020, with support from Jakob Dylan and the Wallflowers. There have been so many postponements at this point—all due to COVID-19 variants popping up—that the Wallflowers pulled out a year or so ago, and went on their own solo tour last fall. As of now, there will be no opener when Matchbox Twenty finally arrives an hour away from its home come Saturday night. How far we’ve come. (Midflorida Credit Union Amphitheatre, Tampa)

Rutterkin/Caught Fire/Curtains/Smile

Deadly/Anarkitty Fresh off fronting Kiss cover band Piss, James Pendleton brings his punk band Rutterkin to a St. Pete VFW where other rock outfits will help raise money for the Girls Rock Camp St. Pete, which empowers girls, women and gender expansive folx through music via a summer

camp that ends with a showcase at Jannus Live. (VFW Post 39, St. Petersburg)

T.R.U.E (album release) w/Zeta

the Babe/Syd Live On her new album, Codependents , Tampa songwriter Jasmine Lopez plays piano-driven pop and soul that at times is deep in love (“Paralyzed”) or a little perturbed (“She Knows”). “The album takes the listener on a journey through heartbreak and toxic codependent relationships. But more importantly, it’s a story about finding the love within,” Lopez told Creative Loafing Tampa Bay. She releases Codependents in one of downtown Tampa’s more beautiful venues alongside songwriter-saxophonist Zeta the Babe and songwriter Syd Live. (The Portico, Tampa)

Crown The Empire w/Varials Last year, Crown The Empire—previously, err, crowned as the “Backstreet Boys of the metal world”—was supposed to perform at Orpheum, but ended up taking over Jannus Live, due to the Ybor standard’s new Tampa location needing a few final touches before opening to the public. Just over a year later, the Dallas-based metal quartet—fresh off the release of a new album, Dogma —finally gets to perform the Orpheum show it longed for. (Orpheum, Tampa)

Foreigner w/Loverboy It’s strange to think, but Tampa soon won’t have an annual Foreigner gig to look forward to. Earlier this year, current lead singer Kelly Hansen

announced on “Fox & Friends” (no, really) that he won’t be able to hit Lou Gramm’s high notes forever, so this summer’s run of shows—billed as the “Historic Farewell Tour”—would be the band’s last. We say this every time, but there’s currently no telling on whether or not OG guitarist Mick Jones will show up at the ol’ Gary on Sunday, but previous Foreigner gigs in the area have seen original drummer Dennis Elliott (not Deen Castronovo from the BioSpine billboards!) and “Juke Box Hero”-era bassist Rick Wills pop in for respective encore guest spots. (Midflorida Credit Union Amphitheatre, Tampa)

MON 10

Blink-182 w/Turnstile It’s been 10 years since members of Blink-182—Mark Hoppus, Tom DeLonge and Travis Barker—have been in the studio together, but this tour also comes with a new single, “Edging,” as well as rumors of a new album in the works. These days Hoppus is just grateful to be alive after a cancer diagnosis, with Barker also loving life after unwillingly dodging death a couple of times. DeLonge, for his part, is now the only pop-punker to believe when it comes to alien existence. (Amalie Arena, Tampa)

WED 12

Steven Curtis Chapman w/Cochren & Co. No matter who or what you pray to, you can’t help but feel for one of the highestregarded names in contemporary Christian music. Steven Curtis Chapman’s adopted

daughter Maria Sue Chunxi was killed in a driveway accident in 2008, and more recently, Chapman lost a family friend in the Covenant School shooting in Nashville earlier this year. It would shock no one if the 60-year-old’s creative juices have been flowing thanks to the tragedies he has endured, so in between his mostly apolitical persona, expect a few moments of solemnity during at this stop. (Mahaffey Theater, St. Petersburg)

Cochren and Co. If you missed Winter Jam last January, or are dying to take on two nights of Christian rock in a row, Steven Curtis Chapman’s Wednesday night opening band—led by Indiana-based worship leader Michael Cochren—is doing a gig of its own in Tampa Bay’s least godly corner: Good ol’ Ybor. (The Attic at Rock Brothers Brewing, Ybor City)

Staind Proud Boys are about to have a temporary new meeting spot. Three days before Ted Nugent’s farewell tour rolls into the Hard Rock, self-described “legendary rock band” Staind—featuring everyone’s favorite ivermectin-poppin’, neck tattoo sportin’, Trump-lovin’ lead singer Aaron Lewis—will kick off a new run of shows in the same room, promoting a fairly cryptic, upcoming album set to release in the fall, entitled Confessions Of The Fallen. No one can say for sure, but if “the fallen” refers to incarcerated insurrectionists, would you be shocked? (Hard Rock Event Center at Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino, Tampa)

In case you missed it, it’s dangerously hot out there. And while many of us will seek refuge indoors this summer, some still manage to find our way outside (sadly, others don’t have a choice). Tampeños who brave the climes, at least, will have a good soundtrack if they find their way to Curtis Hixon Waterfront Park this month.
