Class of 2021 Virtual Commencement Ceremony

Welcome

from the President of the Council

On behalf of the University Council, management, faculty and staff, I would like to extend a warm welcome to our graduating class and their relatives and friends who have joined us for this significant occasion. This evening marks a conclusion as well as a new beginning; it is the rewarding conclusion of your university life and the start of that longer journey, the pursuit of your dreams. The significance of your accomplishments and your graduation is even more apparent, as you were able to successfully respond to challenges related to a global health crisis with the COVID-19 pandemic. You have shown that extraordinary times, may require extraordinary efforts, but more importantly, they define you as extraordinary graduates. During these unprecedented times, you stepped forward, along with the faculty and staff of our School of Medicine to serve the public health needs of the community. By fostering new partnerships, both local and international, you had the opportunity to enhance your clinical training and research experiences. We were proud to see you excel at Hygeia Hospital in Greece, at both public and University Hospitals across Germany and elsewhere in Europe, and to see you publish your research with scientists from our faculty as well as beyond. Along with your well-deserved degree tonight, every single one of you becomes the embodiment of what this university stands for: Excellence, Innovation and Impact on Society. You have now joined a distinguished and growing community of alumni of European University Cyprus. Soon, you will join forces with other alumni to pursue residencies in the United States, Germany, Greece and across the globe, become Foundation 2 Doctors in the UK, or continue with post-graduate studies. This should fill you with pride – but also a sense of responsibility – as you represent the university as one of our most important ambassadors. Our significant investments in new technologies and state-of-the-art facilities in recent years; the launch of new programs, including MSc in Medical Education and PhD in Medical Sciences; the ground-breaking of our new building that will house additional technologically advanced infrastructure for Medicine and Dentistry; our close cooperation with the business community, as well as our academic and research achievements have made our university a regional hub of excellence. You should be proud that your university, your Alma Mater, belongs to Europe’s largest higher education group - Galileo Global Education - with a network of 42 institutions, in over 80 campuses across 10 countries and with over 120,000 students enrolled. We feel very honored and proud to belong to such a great family.

Notably, our university was named among the world’s top 201+ universities in the 2021 Times Higher Education Impact Rankings with regard to three key sectors: Innovation, Industry and Infrastructure; Actions on Climate Change and Decent Work & Economic Growth. This is another great achievement of EUC that shows its commitment for innovation and long-term sustainability. European University Cyprus is also committed to internationalization and a global outlook for its people and for this reason, it has achieved full membership in the Utrecht Network—a European network of more than 30 prestigious universities in 26 countries. EUC community members benefit from this network of universities throughout Europe in terms of academic mobility, cultural exchanges and research opportunities. You know very well that your own individual success, just as the success of our university requires commitment, hard work and a great deal of support from those around you. On this occasion, as you look around you and acknowledge those who have supported you on this journey, allow me to do the same. Clearly, none of this would have been possible without the commitment and the collective work of the EUC community. Our first-class faculty, our researchers and our dedicated management and administrative staff remain our most valuable asset. I would like to thank everyone for their work and extend my gratitude also to you, our latest graduates, for placing our university on the path of excellence. I would also like to congratulate your parents and loved ones for their unfailing support during your academic journey. Education is a continuous journey. This applies to EUC as an institution as it does to all of us as individuals. One never stops learning. What you are celebrating this evening is a significant milestone but I urge you to retain your thirst for knowledge the way you pursued and experienced it here.

Dear Graduates, Your time to make a difference has arrived; the time is now. Seize every opportunity to grow further, to excel, to have an impact in the world. Your Alma Mater will always take pride in calling you School of Medicine, European University Cyprus Graduates. Warm Congratulations!

Dr Christoforos Hadjikyprianou CEO & President of the Council

Message from the Rector Dear Graduands, European University Cyprus is internationally known as a locus of intellectual virtue and innovative operation that cherishes the mission of benefiting society through education and research.

You should be proud to demonstrate and apply a symbiosis of your knowledge, and wisdom with confidence to the clinical, professional and educational environments, particularly in this uncertain and difficult time.

We all gather to congratulate your Class of 2021 at the end of your long journey. As the Rector of European University Cyprus, I would like to congratulate all the graduating students and their families for the hard work and intensive study. All of you should be very proud of your outstanding achievement.

This year’s graduation is notable because there is an obvious need for your profession due to the world pandemic crisis. In view of this, all societies around the world are looking for doctors who will be able to provide strategic initiatives and leadership in health care.

Here in Cyprus, at the School of Medicine of European University Cyprus, is where you got your deep appreciation for learning, determination, ethics, responsibility, altruism and critical thinking. Your love of knowledge became synonymous to your study performance. You demonstrated a perpetual philomathy as while you were excessively and constantly striving for new knowledge and innovative ideas. You know that the world history of medicine is interrelated with knowledge and wisdom. However, as medical decisions are becoming more compounded due to the amplification of information and the magnitude of new technologies, the transformation of knowledge into wisdom is of a paramount importance in your medical profession.

We all are proud of you and confident that what you have learned about the symbiosis of knowledge and wisdom in the fields of Medicine will create an added epistemological and social value for our societies. I believe your experience at the School of Medicine, European University Cyprus has been worthy and, consequently, I do hope the School of Medicine is a special place for you, where you will want to return, both in your memory and in person. Our vision - a vision that together we made - of becoming one of the best Schools of Medicine in the Region within the shortest possible time, remains focused. As you are the new generation that will lead our future, congratulations again for your outstanding achievement.

The excerpt from T.S. Eliot’s poem “The Rock” captures elegantly my thesis on information, knowledge and wisdom: Where is the Life we have lost in living? Where is the wisdom we have lost in knowledge? Where is the knowledge we have lost in information?

I wish you best of luck in your future endeavours.

You should feel privileged to have accomplished knowledge with wisdom from reputable, prominent, and well known professors. You should be proud that you are member of the EUC School of Medicine family; a School that consistently attracts the brightest minds in order to impart forward-thinking knowledge and ensure the most advanced medical studies.

Professor Dr. Kostas Gouliamos Rector

Message from the Dean

Dear Graduands, Class of 2021, Your graduation is a moment of great consequence, marking the most important milestone in your careers, as you make the decisive transition from “Medical Student” to “Medical Doctor”. Up until today, you greeted your patient as a medical student. Tomorrow, after 6 years of hard work, you have earned the privilege to tell them you are their Doctor! As with all great moments of transition, the opportunity arises not only to take stock of the past, but also to take a look forward - towards the future that lies ahead of us. If we look back to the past, we can see a long and winding pathway that has led to your graduation and the people who have played important roles in making today a reality. You have worked hard and accomplished a great deal to arrive at this moment. It is important to stress from the outset, however, that these accomplishments, however great, are not just those of you alone. Behind each and every one of you is a story of family and friends; of parents who nourished and sacrificed; of those who supported and sustained you, who stood by you, who strengthened and inspired you. Their support and guidance have been vital for each of you to reach your high levels of achievement, and in the coming years, their love and friendship will remain among your most valuable assets. As we look back to those who played a role in getting us here today, we also need to honor the Rectorate, Administration and Council of our University, who served as a constant source of guidance and pillars of support. Let us also honor the faculty of this medical school. It was their responsibility to educate you. They have worked hard to give you the skills and competencies, so that you may practice the art of medicine. They have offered you their passion for medicine, science, and in the process, they have forever altered your future journey. Your success, as future clinicians, and the strength of our research and clinical care rest in the hands of our dedicated faculty and staff. Our confidence in you is great and our hopes for you are full of promise. We are part of one of the region’s most vibrant medical schools. We exist to empower learners, transform lives and inspire our students to serve our global community. We have put this aspiration to practice with our innovative new curriculum, which was successfully accredited in the Spring 2020 through the World Federation of Medical Education, by our national agency. Our curriculum, designed to advance critical thinking, practical application and collaboration, has prepared you, our students, to shape the future of medicine as leaders in the field. You are graduating during a period of rapid change in medicine, when discoveries are occurring at a pace never seen before in history. In addition to the exponential changes in medical science, every day we witness sweeping reforms in healthcare, broader more impactful roles in

patient care, and a growing reliance on new digital and healthcare technologies. You have been prepared to navigate through these times of rapid change, and seize the extraordinary opportunities that they bring. We cannot forget, that during these unprecedented times of a global pandemic, you have faced unique challenges to become a clinician. Each of you showed skill, selflessness and resilience to overcome this unique hardship and demonstrate your ability to take on your role as clinicians. This pandemic was a formidable challenge, even to the most seasoned clinicians. Yet, the extraordinary circumstances of the pandemic brought out the very best in you, our faculty and staff, making us an even stronger and wiser school. We were touched by the overwhelming number of you who stepped forward to help our community combat the worst public health crisis of this generation. As Dean, I was extraordinarily proud to see that all of you were determined to continue our educational program, while at the same time, serving our oath to provide care. You represent the ingenuity, innovation and commitment that are at the core of our mission as a School and as a University. While you studied with us, we challenged you to work hard, and you did. You devoted yourself to your studies. You created new knowledge through research, medical theses and published papers. You worked in clinics throughout Nicosia, Larnaca and around the world. You saved lives. You amazed us with your accomplishments. Many of you have received well-deserved accolades, and I am proud to see that several of you will graduate with well-deserved honors from our medical school. As you begin this next part of your journey and you prepare for the next part of your professional lives, remember that you take with you such an amazing gift to offer to society. Some of you will advance our understanding of medicine by discovering new knowledge, some of you will ensure our future by teaching others, and some of you will attend to the very meaning of life, one patient at a time. Class of 2021, your success – your ethos – now becomes part of our growing tradition of those who have gone before you – our Alumni, who are not only skilled doctors and scientists, but who also have a strong sense of community and who have taken a lead in the medical profession. Yes, you are now part of establishing the rich legacy of European University Cyprus, School of Medicine - our Medical School! Congratulations to each and every one of you.

Professor Elizabeth O. Johnson Dean, School of Medicine, European University Cyprus
