Introduction
ERAM was born as a
Multimedia and Audiovisual School in 1998 with the aim to offer high quality education in a unique and creative environment and soon became a part of the University of Girona. ERAM CrossMedia College strives to prepare students to archie ve excellence in their career in cross media studies, by focusing on researching and developing the multidisciplinary aspects of new media, and by constantly pushing the boundaries of modern technology.
Human interactions are expanding to realms previously deemed impossible and unimaginable. A whole new spectrum of ways of communicating has been uncovered in the past two decades alone, driven solely by human creativity and ingenuity. ERAM College occupies a frontier position in the exploration and development of this spectrum by encouraging creative thinking, practical problem solving and sharing knowledge with other faculties of the University of Girona. As part of a network of international
university collaborations exchanging both students and professors, ERAM college carries this research even further. Our objective is to advance the latest techniques in the production, integrity and innovation of new media, while at the same time observing the highest standards in educational methodology. ERAM college places strong emphasis on dialogue with its students, to make them fully aware of their active part in the learning process.
“The last few decades have belonged to a certain kind of person with a certain kind of mind -computer programmers who could crank code, lawyers who could craft contracts, MBAs who could crunch numbers. But the keys of the kingdom are changing hands. The future belongs to a very different kind of person with a very different kind of mind- creators and empathizers, pattern recognizers and meaning makers. These people -artists, inventors, designers, storytellers, caregivers, consolers, big picture thinkers- will now reap society’s richest rewards and share its greatest joys. Daniel H. Pink

Cross Media Studies Studying cross media means learning how to create media content, tell a story, provide a service, or create an experience using several media formats, and distribute it across media platforms. The role of new media is transforming rapidly in countless ways, changing how we perceive technology in relation to human interactions. It has spearheaded new modes of transmitting the message using different platforms and alternative means. The fundamental shift from one-dimensional sender/ reciver communication to multidimensional interactive communication is referred to as cross media. Being a cross media school means that our resources and educational structure and resources must be updated constantly. New methods are continually being developed or considered. This evaluation procedure is essential so that professors can prepare students to face a complex
and multicultural market with ever-changing boundaries. By implementing problemsolving methods, students are encouraged to develop divergent, critical thinking and to apply creative techniques, to stimulate innovation and find solutions. Future cross media professionals will embrace a worldwide, interconnected workspace. The school trains students to perform in teams with multidisciplinary profiles to prepare them for the realities of the global professional market. Our teachers are progressive professionals, the best in their field, and they hail from all over the world. They work with small groups in every class. This allows them to follow closely the development and progression of each student.

Study in the
Mediterranean “You’ve achieved success in your field when you don’t know whether what you’re doing is work or play.” Warren Beatty The Costa Brava, the coastal region of Girona, is a beautiful mixture of old fishing towns, sandy shores and clear blue sea: in other words, the Mediterranean in its essence. ERAM is located in Spain, in the old city of Girona. Situated in the extreme northeast of the Iberian Peninsula, it is only an hour’s train ride from Barcelona. The ancient walls and fortifications were built during the late Middle Ages, and now give Girona its beautiful and iconic cityscape.
Girona is a very popular tourist attraction in Catalunya, not only for its historic architecture, but also for its gastronomy and cultural events. During the year, the university students bring the streets to life with numerous activities in Girona’s many cozy coffee bars and live music pubs. There is much to do within the province’s small area. Visitors can enjoy everything from the dazzling coastline to the snowy mountains of the Pyrenees, bike routes through the forest to the romantic atmosphere of a stroll around the Banyoles Lake.
The Costa Brava is home to many splendid attractions, such as Cap de Creus Natural Park, the monastery of Sant Pere de Rodes, the archaeological site at Empúries, mediaeval villages such as Pals or Peratallada, fine botanical gardens and the maritime Selva region. The area is renowned for its medieval heritage, rich culture, miles of beaches and vibrant nightlife. Still, what people most appreciate is the calm, welcoming atmosphere and generous hospitality of its villages, places with something to entice everyone.

Prospects
“You can’t just ask customers what they want and try to give that to them. By the time you get it built, they’ll want something new.” Steve Jobs Market changes, the global economy and technological innovation are leading to structural changes in current business models, redefinining our social and cultural routines and consequently, demanding new employment profiles. New media creation enjoys a huge scope of activity provided by digital television, the Internet and cell phone technology as well as interactive applications, data visualization and mass communication. The Internet, which is accelerating digitization processes and eliminating boundaries between old and new professions, is generating new areas of convergence. Digital terrestrial television can receive new interactive services to access the information society while mobile technology will expand these possibilities even further. We can’t predict the future but we know technology will be a vital part of it. Changes in media content are irreversibly linked to the rethinking of many antiquated routines, such as classic industrial production processes, as well as the reevaluation of what constitutes essential professional competencies. New profiles are needed to handle the production process, with digital tools that are more and more compatible
with creative tasks or content management. It is important that the contemporary professional profile display a versatile skill set, and for two basic reasons: first, technology operates increasingly in multiprocessing environments, which makes it necessary to have knowledge of the entire range of technical and operational resources, and secondly, a set of transferable competencies centred in creativity, content design, and teamwork is becoming more and more sought after. Naturally, professionals must dominate the specific skills of their area of expertise, and the capacities required will depend directly on the particular demands of each work environment. The versatility of the profile of the new professional is guided by the combination of “technology + creativity + communication”. Society and lifestyle changes call for different ways of interacting and living. Newly created vocations and business opportunities need trained professionals, forward-looking individuals able to understand their present technological environment and eager to design the future. The education ERAM offers is the answer to these needs and opportunities. We prepare you for a labor market that demands technical
knowledge, communicative ability and creative capacities. Look at some of the profiles the market is clamoring for. There is a call for experts who can combine digital tools with knowledge of fine arts and design, creators of new communication strategies and interfaces, project managers with the ability to run of efficient transversal projects in a cross media context. Audiovisual producers who can work in teams and manage diverse collaborations. Engineers who can sell their ideas and engage with new media producers to forge new companies. When science meets art, the results can be unexpected and fascinating, and with the right business strategy, very profitable. At ERAM, people with a broad range of interests converge: those drawn to video game design, web information strategies, audiovisual production, or branded entertainment and advertising work together to acquire very specific skills. They discover how to link information across multiple media devices; how to hone, project management, design and communication capacities; how to build and nurture a concept; and how to make a hobby become a real profession.

Master of Design, Creativity and Technology “The best way to predict the future is to create it.” Peter Drucker The world shifted a while ago. Our interfacing system to it has been heavily enriched lately: real-time services, wonderful communication mechanisms, new visual and sense-based paradigms and super fast organizational tools. Required teams are no longer (in fact, can’t be...) huge and disconnected, static and single profile-based, slow and monochrome... The teams of the present need to be small and focused on the task, connected because of the ability of sharing the same creation languages and tools, dynamic and flexible, colorful and therefore integrating several disciplines and roles within them. Professionals know it regardless of their expertise: development times end up being frantic because of too-short in time milestones and deadlines. Topics are so sparse that can cover
nearly anything: audiovisual and communication design, technology, usability, scripting, management, game design, etc. This era is bringing a crucial value to entrepreneurs and innovators: the power to launch a good idea with the help of existing horizontal platforms manipulated by very talented individuals that publish their products “from home”. No practical need for intermediaries exists, in many cases. This program evolves individuals and their soft skills. It kills fear and “unlocks” people by providing with a unique opportunity: establishing bridges between traditionally isolated isles of disciplines. Here you will “learn by Discovery” while evolving, as in a flow curve, both your personal skills and inner motivation and engagement. Would you join this journey with us? Not future but present is waiting for you.

ERAM’s Spring Semester Final Project covers a real need for an existing company. Students are “edutained” to merge into micro-studios where their skills and powers can be piled up. They learn to deliver by assuming state-of-the-art roles. Teams are crafted by the colorful mixture that emerges from the knowledge of artists, developers and producers together. This methodology follows a “win-win” approach: students are shaped to the interest of leading companies while building a very realistic portfolio, companies are able to find real talent and the university creates a space where both can meet.

ERAM College + UdG Facilities ”Places provide the ecosystems that harness human creativity and turn it into economic value.” Richard Florida Good technology laboratories and continuous investment in high-tech material and resources lead to very interesting possibilities. At ERAM Cross Media College students have immediate access to information and all available tools at any time. All facilities are equipped with everything the creative mind needs and technology can offer, from multimedia laboratories to comprehensive libraries. Our education management system also uses an intranet which allows students to recive updates via mobile phone about classes, lectures or other activities, and to book the technical materials or spaces when needed. ERAM College is housed in the former Coma Cross textile factory in Salt, 16.000 square meters dedicated to the generation of ideas, creativity and business. The space boasts the widest range of facilities: stage sets, computer labs and classrooms, audiovisual media laboratories, conference rooms and study halls, libraries, a photography studio, an auditorium, exhibition and projection rooms, leisure spaces, comfortable coffee lounges and much more.
The University of Girona is divided between three different campuses. The “Barri Vell” campus is located in the historic city center in restored cultural heritage buildings, while the “Montilivi” campus and the “Science and Technology Park” are modern, contemporary installations focused on innovation. From its large study halls, libraries, cafeterias and sports facilities, to its modern language, publishing and employment services the UdG has a unique and lively university environment. ERAM College offers discounts to students on products and services in certain participating establishments, as well as information on how to take advantage of the city’s theaters, museums, concert and conference venues and wealth of cultural offerings.

Ten Reasons for choosing ERAM Cross Media College
1. The Quality of its instruction. ERAM College was created to take the lead in the teaching of new audiovisual communication technologies. Its primary asset is the transfer of knowledge, providing students with professional and personal identities. 2. Double degree. University networking greatly benefits a student’s careers. For that reason our courses offers double degree. It is possible to combine elements of a UK, Bachelor’s and a Spanish degree. Also becouse of agreements signed with educational institutions both in China and the USA, a master’s degree can be completed in either of the two countries. 3. International student community. Teaming up individuals from all corners of the world is done with the aim of promoting and strengthening cultural exchanges. Bachelor’s and master’s degrees programs are taught in English, offering both the possibility to improve language learning and obtain a degree in the multimedia and audiovisual context. This environment is of particular benefit in allowing students to take part in international workshops and other activities organized between universities. 4. Job placement opportunity. The use of new technologies grows everyday. On the one hand, this is because the diverse range of people with access to a computer and burgeon online networking options continues to grow, thereby increasing the production of digital content. On the other hand, there is a clear tendency towards the integration of devices and the improvement of accessibility between the entire range of digital platforms and available information. Many sectors, including telecommunications, information technologies, consumer and professional electronics and e-business, demand cross media professionals. New fundamentals like simple online interaction, new media languages, easy access to
information, and the marketing of digital educational material or entertainment calls for specific trainning. Our courses are evolving continually in response to that call, and in particular to propose new solutions for the future. 5. Multidisciplinary and transversal studies. Multidisciplinary because we offer education in different disciplines such as research and conceptualization, scripting and storyboarding, audience and social analysis, user-centered design, interactivity and usability, computer science and technology or content management. Transversal because we connect them all together. Multi-faceted professionals are very important for modern companies. 6. Creativity, the key to innovation. Our curriculum places great importance on student creativity, as this competency will set them apart from other professionals. In both the bachelor’s degree the master’s degree program the educational methods used strive to discover talent, and empower human creativity as a tool for understanding and designing the future. As a leading expert on economic competitiveness and technological innovation, Richard Florida, says: “Access to talented and creative people is to modern business what access to coal and iron ore was to steelmaking...” because “...now human creativity is the driving force of economic growth.” 7. Excellent infrastructure. We work in both on- and off campus facilities, where students and teaching staff remain in close contact and share experiences to assess the knowledge and/ or technological mastery of the students. Students can check online the calendar at any time. 8. Approachable university experience . ERAM College’s strength is its small groups, the good working environment and the fact that communication and networking is made easy. The school has a
friendly atmosphere, where the information and orientation office provides a year-round reception service for students and their inquires. 9. Motivation and self-efficacy improve student outcomes. The healthy balance between study and creation helps to develop personal aptitudes, social life, and enjoyment. A comfortable environment is very important for education, which makes Girona an ideal choice. It’s small and quiet but offers a wide range of attractions: fantastic landscapes that let the imagination run free, live music, cultural activities, night life, sports and much more. 10. Our professors board. Last but not least is our eclectic and professionally renowned teaching staff. To quote Richard Florida again: “Innovation at the regional level is positively and significantly associated with both human capital and creativity.” That’s why ERAM College values human capital and provides low barriers to entry for talented and creative people of all backgrounds. To encourage teachers to explore and move beyond the immediate confines of the school, we offer them the possibility of exchanges in other countries, encourage them to get in touch with other university professors, and support them in publication and research or simply assist in the communication of their expertise and networking within school installations. A few words from Studies Director
“You cannot teach a man anything; you can only help him find it within himself. Galileo Galilei There is a paradigm shift happening right now, a shift in cultural and global frames of reference. Recently, communication design has taken on a more social and adaptive role as the modern era calls for a more intimate and integrated interaction with technology. I call it Humanistic Design but it might just as well be called a Digital Renaissance, because now more than ever, design is interlocking with human interactions in ways never before imagined. Just like when the industrial revolution shaped the tools and needs of communication in accordance with the diktats of its time, today the boundaries are blurring between numerous fields of disciplines that are progressively merging as technology rushes forward. Social actions and interactions have caused cultural revolutions all around the world, using technology and its design, simply as an expressive tool to connect people with each other. The Internet has broken the shackles of simple one-way communication and positioned itself as a speedway of human activity and information, almost like a living organism of collective conciousness. Along with this, the thought process and creative approach of designers, programmers and engineers have also changed to make social responsibility and interactivity just as vital as basic human communication between one to another. Now, we live and breathe in a world where connections are constantly being made and feedback happens in real time when we set something free through the wires. We are not only defined by what we do, but also by how we think. This is what we want to grow and nurture constantly in ERAM College with the Master of Design, Creativity and Technology. We want to synergize the roles of design and engineering to forge a new discipline, using not only new ways of thinking but also of doing, moving ahead of the social digital revolution to make ERAM an incubator of creativity and innovation. The future will rely on inspired thinkers who go beyond form itself, to create not only function but social humanistic function. It is important to remember that design is an organism made up of the people who create and interact with it, and ERAM College is where that organism feeds.
