Introduction What’s our project about

08

“More than bodies” is a project that was born in 2016 at ERAM, University of Audiovisual and Multimedia in Salt, Girona. This project started due to the necessity to represent all body shapes and sizes within the modern day fashion industry, mass and social media. In 2017, this project evolved and expanded its representation from body size to all of the other aspects taking part into beauty standards and prototypes. That’s why “More than bodies” fights to showcase all bodies as equals and beautiful in their own way.

Idea “More than bodies is a transmedia project that works towards body confidence in the new generation.

Description What we are working about

From the established aim to get to all the different insecurities we chose 5 topics to represent each one of them in 5 videos. The videos will have a common art direction and will represent each one with a thoughtful aesthetic. The chosen topics are the following: Wrinkles Body hair Sizes Interventions Dermis

All of those videos are going to be on an interactive website. At first, you will find a presentation video in which a question will appear and the spectator will have to answer: Do you have any body insecurities/issues? When answering that question there will only be two possible answers: yes or no. Depending on what the user chooses it will either take him/her to a gallery of images in which he/she will have to choose five, and after that a personal video will be generated depending on the choices that he/she made, that video will be generated by sections of the topic video being mixed or it will take him/her directly to the separated topic pages.

Target Who we are doing it for

The market demographic we are aiming for is from 12 to 35 years old. In our target we include all of the people that had suffered, suffer or can suffer, in the future, any kind of body insecurity due to the pressure and stereotypes inside today’s society. We want to start spreading our ideals initially in Catalonia and France, that’s why our logotype and website will be in the international language, english.

Platforms How we’ll materialize the project

Exposition The showcase of the project

More t han B o d i e s

“More than bodies” has the purpose to have an itinerant exhibition to do around Spain and France, so in that way the project will be exposed to a lot more people, not only just by the website in a technological platform but making it a transversal project that can feel closer to the spectators and possibly, at the same time, attract a bit of an older audience which you maybe wouldn’t get only via the website. The whole project has an aesthetic unity that can be added and adapted to all of the different platforms whether they are physical or digital, that’s why the exposition will have a similar setting to the presentation video on the website, with the set of wooden frames also on it to represent the “windows of insecurities”. Along the exposition the spectators will see the photos taken during the shooting from each of the insecurities of the topic videos. In the end, they will also be able to enjoy the interactive experience from the project’s website through an electronic device that the same exposition will offer, allowing any of the visitors to take part in it, even if they don’t have an electronic device to see it through themselves, doing so, they will be able to explore the different insecurities treated on “More than bodies”.

Website The core of the transmedia project

More t han B o d i e s

The website also follows the same design and art direction as the rest of the project; minimal and intuitive for the user. Regarding on the information and what we find in it, we can organize it in different screens. First of all, when entering the website you stamp upon a 2 minute long presentation video. In that one, you’re moving through a museum lookalike space with the main character on the video, a mysterious blond girl. While doing that, you’re discovering other characters in their underwear inside some wooden frames, each of these characters is part of one of the five topics that we’ll be finding out while getting deeper in the project. When the girl has seen all of the rest of the characters on the video, she realizes that there is an empty frame on the middle of the semicircle structure. After taking a closer look into it she is also suddenly inside the structure as the rest of the characters. In that moment, there’s a pause on the video and a question is generated to the user: Do you have any body insecurities? To that question there’s only two possible answers: yes / no. Depending on what you choose there is going to be an ending or another to the video and the website will direct you to a specific screen of the platform.

Photography Books Printed Showcase of the project.

Another of the formats in which we want to represent our project it’s a printed format: a magazine. This publication would be a reflection article from all of those taking part into the project, talking about their experience of being part of the project and explaining some anecdotes about their present or past insecurities. It will also include the support of influential people wanting the same social change as “More than bodies” towards body acceptance.

37

Presentation video First look at the topics of the project

That’s the first video that the user stumbles upon when he/she enters on the website platform, and it’s a 2’ long video. That’s why, this is the video that will be letting the user see which is the theme of the project in case they haven’t arrived here through the diverse social media accounts of the project (Instagram, Twitter, Facebook) or another source, already knowing what is it about. This video is located in a museum looking like space, with different “art pieces” on it. Those art pieces are different sectioned parts of the body, clothing mannequins all painted in white. The whole space has a lot of plastics covering some

of the objects to represent that the “exposition” is in the making/ not opened to the public yet. At the end of the room, we can see a semicircle structure created by nine wooden frames one next to the other and with a translucide plastic on the inside. You can see that there’s people in their underwear behind six of those, keeping the one on the middle and the other missing two on the corners empty. The video is centered in the actions of the main character, a blond girl with a blue dress that suddenly appears in the middle of the room. She approaches enchanted the structure and takes a deep look into each of the characters that represent the topics of the project. The girl is finally absorbed in the middle of the semicircle when she’s seen all of the characters and returns to the empty middle space.

Sizes noun: how large or small something or someone is. It’s a 1’-1’30’’ video shot in a studio, with 5 different actors/actresses, each one of those have a specific material that compresses their body in a creepy way. The materials are scotch tape, an elastic thread, tights, paper film and cloths Those materials directly represent the repression of the fashion and clothing industry with their wrong sizings and representation of the diversity of the population. In the climax of the video each of the characters will break free from those materials but in a more philosophical way from the beauty size standards.

Wrinkles noun: a small line in the skin caused by old age.

More t han B o d i e s

It’s a 1’-1’30’’ video shot in a studio, with 5 different actors/actresses, everyone of them is been thrown colorized body soap on them and each one has a specific color. These soap is the link to the different characters, makes them all unite, everybody, doesn’t matter their age or period in their life will grow and eventually have wrinkles in the end. And instead of representing that growing process of a single person looking for women or men that look alike in different stages of life we represented those different stages with different people.

44

It’s a 1’-1’30’’ video shot in a studio, with 5 different actors/actresses, each one of those have a specific material placed in areas of their body where hair grows. The materials are post-its, cloth pegs, feathers, pearls and paper flowers. Those materials directly represent body hair in an abstract and artistic way. The materials appear on the bodies of the models with a stop motion effect but in a video format.

45

Dermis noun: the thick layer of skin under the epidermis (thin outer layer) that con- tains blood vessels, sweat glands and nerve endings.

More t han B o d i e s

It’s a 1’-1’30’’ video shot in a studio, with 5 different actors/actresses, each one of those have a specific skin anomaly. Those are stretch marks, freckles, lupus and the effects in skin on a pregnant body. To complement and amplify these marks in skin they are painted with gold body paint to make them more aesthetic appealing and at the same time stand out more in camera.

47

Interventions noun: An act that alters the course of a disease, injury, or condition by initiating a treatment or performing a procedure or surgery.

It’s a 1’-1’30’’ video shot in a studio, with 5 different actors/actresses, each one of those have a different scar or the absence of a part of their body due to an accident, illness or even from birth. Those are a mastectomy, two back scars, a face scar and a leg amputation. In this video there are no external materials covering or complementing the body, instead, there’s a circular platform that rotates in its own axis and in which the models are standing on. That platform makes the models turn around which creates a particular and more creative effect to play with in the post production.
