PROJECT INFO Few people in America know about the oldest strategy board game on Earth that still holds its positions against artificial intelligence. Even fewer can play it. GO is the game with such a rich history, so it can offer a variety of aspects to enjoy, such as intellectual and emotional competition, refined aesthetics and deep philosophy. There are no entry barriers or requirements. However one can spend a lifetime advancing. Aside from the pure joy, go serves as a powerful tool for developing both strategic and intuitive thinking — skills that are equally important for work and everyday life. PURPOSE OF THE PROJECT This project aims to tackle roadblocks that prevent it to gain popularity in the West. STAGES OF DEVELOPMENT 1. Research: uncovering the obstacles to the stated purpose and developing strategies for resolving the issues; 2. Branding: development of the unique identity system that would appeal to target audience and make benefits of the game apparent; 3. Prototyping: creating a set of prototypes for deliverables and test of working together as a set as well as independent pieces; 4. Deploying: finally releasing the complete system for investors and public judgment.

AI CALENDAR APP RESEARCH, UX/UI, PROTOTYPING

PROJECT INFO MAP THE DAY is designed to improve on your scheduling habits, which sometimes makes our perfect schedules worthless. App design is backed by leading time-management techniques as well as smart AI-assistant that helps craft you a custom plan. SCREEN 1 The screen on the left showcases the app icon on a loading screen. The icon is derived from the featured interface element that instantly lets you assess the distribution of time during the day. SCREEN 2 The middle screen showcases the app settings where a user can specify the restrictions for AI-secretary to customize its suggestions for his personal lifestyle. SCREEN 3 The screen on the right presents the overview of your month with interactive graphs that get you a clear picture of the priorities and time spent on different projects each day. The length of the color bars represents the amount of time dedicated to each activity, i.e. work, sleep, wellness, personal and fun. Each category is essential for a balanced lifestyle and the AIassistant will make sure you have al least some fun each day.

AI CALENDAR APP RESEARCH, UX/UI, PROTOTYPING

Eugene Gushchin portfolio project 2 out of 4 // page 5 out of 16

PROJECT INFO SCREEN 1 The screen on the left is a place where you provide your AI-assistant “food for thought.” All the daily tasks are broken down into categories types Projects (with a specified due date), Habits (actions repeatedly performed for a fixed amount of time), To-dos (one-off things like grocery shopping or sending a greeting card). Tasks are structured around color coded categories. The green line at the bottom of the screen shows the pulse of your calendar: how much time you still have for scheduling and turns red when you overbook yourself. SCREEN 2 The middle screen gives you a clear picture of the distribution of your time across the day. You can change the allowances with a single tap and AI-secretary will rebuild your schedule. Shaking the phone in that view will redistribute time allocations in the unlocked categories. AI-assistant knows that you need to have breaks in between the tasks and schedule an extra time right before the deadline to ensure you’ll make everything on time. SCREEN 3 The screen on the right gives you a classic calendar view where tasks that AI-assistant couldn’t properly schedule are placed on top, so you can manually drag them onto a specific place in the calendar. Alternatively, you can choose an option to reschedule those tasks for a later day.

BACKGROUND INFO As designers, we apply our skills to improve surroundings and help communities to thrive. One day I saw a post on our community wall in the neighborhood with the list of emergency and general community resources phone numbers. It was designed in a way that no one will look at it twice or remember the numbers. Most importantly there was an explicit indication to call community police number for emergencies instead of 911 to cut the wait time for the dispatch center. The brochure insisted it’s a life-saving hint. I thought that as a designer I could contribute to the community making those resources available for broader reach and by delivering that message more efficiently.

DISPLAY BOOTH I visited the Oakland’s official website and found tons of information that had to be properly structured and delivered. To tackle this, I first broke it down into the three main groups according to the emergency level, and then color coded the information accordingly. This series of posters was designed to be placed on informational street furniture, such as info columns. Posters can be wrapped around in 360 degrees so that the green section become connected.

MOBILE APP The app is targeted to the locals living in the area and can be particularly useful to them. Presented wireframe shows the way of operating the app and how to access each particular section. The top block is a sliding map that contains category references which then unfolds into scrollable lists containing the detailed info. Such quick and organic navigation will be particularly suitable for seniors. High-level categories (Emergency, Police&Fire, Community) are located at the bottom of the screen as buttons and help to speed up navigation around the app.

D FOLDING BROCHURE Compact foldable booklet becomes handy for tourists and visitors since there are multiple hotels in the downtown area. 1. The brochure folds in such a way that the most important emergency numbers (in red) are located on the back of the folded piece and always visible. 2. The second level of urgency (numbers in orange) unfolds next. There is no need to unfold the rest of it, in case you are looking for police & fire numbers. 3. Then, if you want to explore the rest of community resources available to you, you can unfold all the green parts. The back of the brochure features a view of the Lake Merritt that you can even put on the wall.

The spread states the fact that mediation doesn’t get proper attention, backed with statistics.

Again, we are to spend almost half of our life lost in thought and potentially quite unhappy...It just kind of seems tragic...Actually, especially when there’s something we can do about it, when there’s a positive, practical, achievable, scientifically proven technique which allows our mind to be more healthy, to be more mindful and less distracted:

MEDITATION

IS NOT BEING PRACTICED

positive / practical / achievable / scientifically proven

The spread outlines the reasons why meditation isn’t being practiced.

And this is an extraordinary thing, right? We’re talking about our mind. Our most valuable and precious resource, through which we experience every single moment of our life. The mind that we rely upon to be happy, content, emotionally stable as individuals, and at the same time, to be kind and thoughtful and considerate in our relationships with others. This is the same mind that we depend upon to be focused, creative, spontaneous, and to perform at our very best in everything that we do. And yet, we don’t take any time out to look after it. In fact, we spend more time looking after our cars, our clothes and our hair and all sorts of other things.

The research paper that came out of Harvard just recently, said, that on average our minds are lost in thought almost 47% of the time. It is almost half a life we spend lost in thought. At the same time, this sort of constant mind-wandering is also a direct cause of unhappiness. We have a proven tool that can help with that — meditation.

PEOPLE ARE AFRAID OF MEDITATION

PEOPLE ARE AFRAID OF MEDITATION There are all sorts of fears and prejudices people have towards meditation. Almost all agree that the subject is complex and obscure. It also lacks some scientific credibility in the peoples’ minds though researchers come up with the new papers highlighting the benefits of meditation almost every week.

There are all sorts of fears and prejudices people have towards meditation. Almost all agree that the subject is complex and sort of obscure. It also lacks some scientific credibility in the peoples’ minds though researches come up with the new papers highlighting the benefits of meditation almost every week. Meditation is often regarded as a traditional, almost old style practice that require specific rituals and postures. Many of those who are interested in subject don’t know from where to start and how to be sure you are doing things right.

IT LACKS IMMEDIATE GRATIFICATION

Meditation also doesn’t offer you any sorts of immediate feedback. After finishing the session, you basically have no idea if you’ve done everything correct or not. It’s lacks any sort of governance even if you attend a private lessons with instructor.

NAME DEVELOPMENT A LONG WAY TO GO

There is an old proverb saying, “the way you name your ship—that’s the way it’s going to sail.” Naming a brand requires the ability to distill the essence of it in a simple, short, recognizable brand. Still encompass all and every brand values, while specific graphic treatment suggests other connotation layers, making the brand versatile and complete.

BRANDING PHASE 2 9

Branding synthesizes the unique brand ideas with versatile and modern design system. It redefines meditation to make it an approachable tool you’d like to use on a daily basis.

SERIES OF POSTERS THE IDEA BEHIND

To create a really distinct brand, research of competitors seems inevitable. There are common design approaches that are prevalent on this market: - the use of landscape photography, - use human figure in various degrees of abstraction, - the use of subtle natural colors, - the use of patterns from the nature. There are few brands that use images of people, as meditation treats as a very intimate and personal act. The use of color gradients is limited and abstraction is not a commonly used thing.
