People come here in the way that people go to the beach rather than swimming hall. It is not only to exercise, but also to social, to play, to get tan, to look at people. It is an ideal recrea onal place for people at all ages . The goal of this project is to use the playful & educa onal ac vi es as tools to encourage interac ons between people in dierent groups/ ages/ genders.

> 01 The first part of this project was to do the site research of adjacency for pool-related programs. Through this research, I was able to begin to understand what type of pools and community spaces are lacking in the area. And a er the conclusion of this research, a couple programs were picked and decided for this building. Programs, loca ons, sizes, accessibilies to the public, and price are the major area of interests in these diagrams. It is concluded that a low price, medium size mul -func onal pools and community spaces are needed in this neighborhood. Since the crime rate is rela vely low, high security and fences are not required in this project.

> pool house > 02 The design strategy is based how to connect the most important program spaces. It will create a con nuous experience for the users, and therefore it is emphasized on a eďŹƒcient but interes ng circula on paths design for the dierent types of users. The dierent shapes of profiles of the pools, by linking them from high to low, starts to form an intriguing sec on. The underside part of the pools thus has drama c ceiling changes and makes the spa room and changing room fit in well in the space.

> pool house > 03 One of the most interes ng part is how the “bubbles” of spaces are pushing against each other sec onally. They are in many way connect, intersect, but support each others. There are few small peep hole for the users in the different spaces to see on another.

> pool house > 2014 > new york, ny > columbia university, gsapp > core ii Fulton Gateway is a project about crea ng a new entry to the unusable exis ng upper floors of the block, and ac va ng the area by adding on addi onal recrea on programs on top of the roof and plaza. The bank of this project is a FAR bank, which manages the square footages from the varies of landlords. The FAR bank renovates spaces and turns them into profitable commercial spaces. The exis ng upper floors therefore will become higher value space- a department store-like retail space. The roof is occupied with recrea onal spaces, which base on my research is lacking in the neighborhood. By adding these addi onal programs on top of the exis ng block, it will reacve the area. The low price recrea onal space, which is supported by the retail spaces below, will become a des na on place in Brooklyn. It is a device to a ract families, couples, young people, and students to come and enjoy the facility. Ideally it is a great adapt of reuse, neighbor improving, urban solu on project.

> far bank > 01 The research of the block is sugges ng that most of the exis ng first floor is occupied by retails, however the second floor or above are mostly vacant- due to the lack of accessibly stairs and visual exposures to the ground floor. The project therefore, is very focused on how to re-use these unused spaces by adding ver cal circula ons. And It’s also examined for what types of programs could go inside this building and how it is forming in dierent phases.

> 02 The most important “new” architecture in this project is really the front piece of the block. It is ac ng more like an entry way and ver cal circula on to the rest of the floors behind. In order the preserve the old 1915 brick building block , the new structures thus are all strategica lly li ed away from the exis ng architecture. This gap also helps to reduce the transmissions of possible vibra ons and soundnoise that could be created from the recrea onal events upstairs. So the new “department stores” downstairs could have a quiet shopping environment. Not only this new entry ways allows access to the old vacant buildings behind, it really opens up also more commerce and recrea onal opportuni es for the nearby Brooklyn residents.

Area of natural environment for wild animal has decreased- may cause wild animal ex nc on Our Proposal: By adding a layer of man-made super structure hovering above the exis ng ci es/ land, it would response to all the issues listed above. Our vision is that one day human will abandon exis ng ci es and give back lands to nature. The abandoned buildings will be used as structures and ver cal circula on to support the new fabric of city above. We believe that instead of building higher towers, construc ng a more horizontal city landscape could reduce the blocking of the sunlight, and disturb less nature on ground level. Our proposal is a very horizontal structure system that floats in the sky, and parallels with the nature on the ground. Combined in varies of configura ons, it varies from a studio apartment to double stories 3 bedrooms penthouse apartments.

> super structure > 01 The facade of this super structure is wrapped by 3 layers of skins, and they are responsive to nature condi ons like sunlight, rain, wind and etc. Sun screens would rotate open/close depending on different me of the day, The solar panels would re-posi on to certain angles depend on certain me of the season. And metal screen mash, and glass windows can be open or close depending on the temperature inside the building. The skin is inspired by living organisms on earth. Finally, The housing units are based on 15’x50’ modules, one can easily add/subtract units as desired. It can

Accoring to the research, there are over one million people in the world are using sun as main sorce to disinfect water for drinking. The procesure is as simple as le ng clear bo les of raw water under sun exposure for over 6 hours. This process can eec vly kill high percentages of germs and virus. It may not meet the drinking water standard in the western world, but it is more than enough for the flushing of toilets, and washing hands. By intergrading water pipes, which pump water from the river near by, it created its own kind of architecture language.

> solar public toilet > 01 The diagrams on the le shows how much water energy this system can save from a single toilet, which is 46,700 gallons of water per year. (a blue dot represents 128 galons of water) If there are 100 pubilc of these toilets are installed in New York City, 4.6 million gallons of water can be saved. Since the square por iled water pipes are intergraded with structure, the shell of the toilet is like a waving of water and metal. When one flashes the toilet, will experience the water in the wall and ceiling are tumbling through pipes. It will create an interes ng eect for the users.

Shared resources and informa on are provided to people and ins tu on through Green Cloud Center. Also, it is a model for food providing services using exis ng public transporta on systems such as bike path, water taxi, bus and school bus and it involves provisioning of dynamically scalable and some mes virtualized resources through online. It is a byproduct and consequence of the lack of land for urban farming to provide fresh food. The founda on of green cloud service is the broader concept of infrastructure convergence and shared service. Green Cloud Service allows people to get their own farming pod to nourishing themselves and helping other people.

Green Cloud Center Green Cloud Center is usually located at the intermodal transit hub. It connects people and necessary resources faster, with easier access and less maintenance, and enables Green Cloud Pod rapidly adopted throughout
urban environment. It not only provides food for people but also storage space for seeds, educa on programs and some entertainment space to meet the demand of people.
Green Cloud Pod Green Cloud pod is a basic unit for urban farming. It is a small pod for faming but it is scalable and flexible in its combina on. It is
made of recycled materials like paper, banana leaf and glass. It can be delivered to home or can be carried like a shopping bag.

In the later phase, I was in charged of diagramming, renderings, and some drawings. Even though we did not win the price, it has been a great experience working the Ki-soek and Yu-Sook in this collabora ve work.

A church converts to a library, a bank converts to a dorm, an opera house converts to a book store. Many examples can be seen in our daily lives. I am interested in how spaces and the func on of spaces can be transformed with me. If programs and spaces can react and response to me not only it makes the space more interes ng, but it also makes the space more usable. Combining dierent stores that have dierent open hours can maximize the use of spaces and hours. It is more energy eďŹƒcient.

me-shi ing space > 01 Throughout my research, I was able to find several examples of architecture that’s been modified / transformed into new uses. One example is the Dominican Church. The church is located in Holland and it was constructed in the early 13th century. The func on of the this space remain worship space un l its par ally destruc on during world war I & II. The church was vacant for decades. In the year 2001, a bookstore company bought this building, thus it was converted into a bookstore shop. The interes ng part about this design is that all the bookshelves and walkways are giant free standing objects, as if they were giant “furniture” coexist with the ancient Architecture. It was a way that the architects express the respect to the history by not adding on new floors and structures that cover the exis ng. The new and old therefore can be easily iden fied. Also, talking about func ons of space change through me, the OMA Prada Transformer crossed my mind. It is a very interes ng architectural use of space that allow different programs to happen. Depending on the season and program, the architecture can be li ed up by a crane and flipped to other sides. There are three sides and they all have specific func ons of their own. It is a smart way to combine 3 spaces into 1 without adding costs and use of land..

The hea ng, cooling, lighting powers won’t be wasted on un-used space while the shop is open and etc. The super slow moving track doors ideally won’t even let people realized its moving, un l they stayed in the space in a while and later learn the change of configura on of spaces. The outdoor park can be turned into a outdoor concert during summer. the red part of entry is designed to guide the sounds wave toward the possible audiences in the park.

> 7th floor parasite > 2008_ providence, ri > rhode island school of design_intar > 7th floor parasite The 7th floor parasite project is an interes ng experience of biomorphic architecture/ interiors. We took the concept of a living parasite and transformed it into a roof top architecture design. The programs of the spaces are school classrooms, and studio spaces. At the beginning of the semester I did researches on the Phoradendron, also known as mistletoe, and I studied its forms and system. I was not only mimicking the form, but also the process from this creature. The interes ng about this parasite- unlike many other parasites in the world, it doesn’t kill its host by stealing energy, but living peacefully with them. This character matches with the concept of this add-on architecture on the roof top. It also shared the exis ng building system ( Stairs, HVAC, and etc.) and structures from its exis ng host, but at the same me it is living with them.

> 180 maiden lane > 2012 > new york, ny > perkins eastman architects > 180 maiden lane 180 maiden lane is a project I designed for a small ideal compe on while I was working for PerkinsEastman Architects in New York city. The owner of this skyscraper invited 5 design vfirms and asked each of us to provide ideas of how to renovate the small entries and the POPS space inside the building. My firm gave me 5 days to work on this alone and came up with this proposal. We later got the 50 million renova on contract because of this proposal. I first started researching for the exis ng problema c areas in the building. The main problem people feel is that the entries of this 40+ stories building, are extremely small and low. There are 3 iden cal entries on the north, east, and south sides, and they all have a narrow doorway with a 8 foot ceiling. It does not feel welcoming nor does it func onal. Once inside the building, the escalators that leads people to the oďŹƒce levels, are right in front of the entry. It was very ght and bad for circula on. My two points of focuses are improving the entry experience and improve the interior circula on paths. And possibly add more interes ng programs for the POPS space.

Which are slice the pyramid entries to create be er exposures to the street, and re-posi on the escalators on the side to gain more landing room at the front lobby. The same strategy of slicing, pushing and pulling are being repeated on the pops space shops and cafes.
