Words from the East I would first like to give praise and honor to Allah the Almighty for his many blessings upon myself, family and all the Nobility. Secondly, I would like to thank you gentlemen for the immense and humbling opportunity to serve as the Illustrious Potentate of Alla Baba Temple No. 53 for the 2017 fraternal year. It is truly an honor and a responsibility that I do not take lightly. As we move forward with goals and plans for the year, I would like to continue to build upon the rich legacy of the leaders that have come before me. The following is the program of events for the 2017 fraternal year. This administration will be built upon three simple PILLARS. These PILLARS are outlined below along with my administrative goals and event calendar. Every great leader understands that the success of any organization is dependent upon the harmonious workings of those who best work and best agree. I know that if we are to succeed in 2017 and beyond, it will be because of the efforts of each and every Noble of Alla Baba Temple working hard to make it happen. May Allah bless each of you, your families, and our Mystic Rite! Fraternally,

Noble Eugene W. Greenfield Illustrious Potentate

Our Pillars How We’ll Rebuild in 2017 This year I want to focus on three foundational commitments, three pillars, to align our efforts as we seek to rebuild our temple. I will outline the impetus behind each commitment and provide a list of goals and events we’ll pursue throughout the year.

8

Service commitment to others

Membership

Fiscal Responsibility

commitment to growth

commitment to the temple

Pillar 1 Service Commitment to Others The Shrine is first and foremost a charitable organization. In keeping with this sacred obligation, I would like to complete six community related events during the 2017 fraternal year. The point of service is not only to do the much needed work of rebuilding our community as Shriners but to also to shine a positive light on our organization. While this ambitious goal requires effective use of scheduling and manpower, I assure you it is very obtainable. Our goal should be to make Alla Baba Temple No. 53 one of the top community service organizations in Columbus, Ohio.

2017 Service Projects Shriners as Mentors/SIMBA Program-Noble Gene Smith  Children’s Christmas Party-Noble Brian Keaton Children’s Halloween Party-Noble Weet Dukes Shriners on the Streets-Noble Alan Tucker  Thanksgiving Basket Give Away-Noble Chester C. Christie, PP Voter Awareness-Noble Jeff Turner, PP

EBUIL

Pillar 2 Membership Commitment to Growth Our goals in regards to membership will be simple and straightforward: Grow and engage our membership, that’s it. The only way to accomplish this aim is to make sure that all of our Nobles are kept well informed and connected to the Temple. I would like to begin a reclamation campaign to help increase our membership and participation. We must do this through increased and diverse forms of communication to make sure we are listening to our Nobles, addressing their concerns, and soliciting their support. This reclamation campaign will be chaired by our Assistant Rabban.

2017 Membership Goal Goal #1: Create 10 New Nobles Goal #2: Reclaim 5 Nobles Goal #3: Develop a working phone committee Goal #4: Revamp Alla Baba Temple’s website Goal #5: Issue a quarterly newsletter. Goal #6: Quarterly visitation to an elderly Noble

10

Pillar 3 Fiscal Responsibility Commitment to the Temple In order to return Alla Baba Temple to a position of fiscal solvency, the Temple must look at additional ways to raise capital outside of dues. In addition, we must take a critical look at our budget and bring our spending in line with our current revenue. Our goal is to leave the Temple with a surplus at the end of the year. Here are the fundraising activities for the 2017 fraternal year:

2017 Fundraising Activities Pre New Year’s Eve Hospitality-Noble Weet Dukes, Chairman Potentate Breakfast-Noble Thomas Stevens, Chairman Charity Ball-Noble Rodney Blount, Chairman Ox Roast-Noble Bryan Reeder, PP, Chairman Raffles-Noble Darin Lurry, Sr. , HPP, Chairman

EBUIL THE BADGE

by Noble Edgar A. Guest By the scimitar and crescent you wear upon your coat, You proclaim that you’re a Shriner. It’s a sign for man to note. It’s a symbol that your fellows have abiding faith in you. They believe that you are worthy and they trust in all you do. But I wonder, fellow Nobles, as I meet you here and there, if you’ve really caught the meaning of that little badge you wear. Are you mindful of its splendour? Are you watchful of its fame? Are you careful as you travel, not bring it into shame? You proclaim that you’re a Shriner; every passer-by can see That you’ve pledged to do the right thing wheresoever you may be. But, world-wide, your brothers suffer loss and injury from you if you do a wrong act which a Shriner wouldn’t do. By the token you are wearing, you’re expected to be fine. We have taught the world it’s something to be chosen by the Shrine, and the man who wears its emblem has his fellows’ guarantee that a gentleman of honour he is known and pledged to be. And if he shall fail that standard by some thoughtless word or whim. All Shriners, wide-world over, shall be put to shame by him. By the scimitar and crescent which so proudly you display, you are bound to live and travel in a bigger, better way. You must dignify the emblem, so that none whom you may meet, be he friend or foe, may whisper that the Shrine is but a cheat. You must play the man at all times, you must keep your conduct fair and be worthy of the crescent and scimitar you wear. Courtesy of Mohammed Shriners, Peoria, Illinois
