On The Cover: The Cover photo was taken at an abandoned industrial building in Johannesburg by Kenneth Kubheka a 2 Star worker from the Edenvale Photographic Club. Kenneth used his Canon 5D MII with a Fish eye lens to have an obscure view of the steel beams and roof. Kenneth shoot in Manual mode and used the following settings: F10 / 25s and f12 also work At ISO 100 up to 400 Because of the low light situation he used a remote release and steady tripod. Kenneth did some Photoshop work to enhance the colours. This was an outing organized by a Clare and Mark for the "Johannesburg Photowalkers." On the night there was a variety of techniques of photography and this particular shot was taken during spinning of steel wool. This was his most memorable shot taken on the night. The steel wool technique can be incorporated with different elements and using different props and backgrounds.

Cover Photo was done by Kenneth Kubheka from the Edenvale Photographic Club.

Chairmans Chat Well, so much for 2017 as far as club meetings are concerned and it is was with a heavy heart that I bade you all farewell until 24th January 2018. I am really going to miss you guys. At least most of us get to meet again on 3rdDecember for the warehouse shoot, but I imagine that will all be done by the time you read this. It seems surreal that it has been an entire year since Colin stood down; feels more like 5 minutes. It has also been an eventful, fruitful year for the club. Almost everything went smoothly, with an occasional hiccup along the way. I may have said this before, but I am enjoying the vibe in the club. I see new friendships being formed and photography constantly improving which is raising the standard overall. I would also like to wish all our new members that joined this year a big warm welcome. Enjoy, learn, grow and above all, just have fun. We, the committee, would like to thank each and every one of you all for your support through 2017. You all need to push us and tell us want you want We are there to make sure it all runs smoothly but the club as a whole it what makes it run. We wish everyone a prosperous festive season. To those travelling, travel safe. To those staying at home, a time to relax and put your feet up. Enjoy this time together with family and friends and return safely next year . May you have amazing photographic opportunities and do not forget about the 6th Miroc Digital Circuit Salon closing on 9th January, hosted by Serbia, Russia, Norway and South Africa (Edenvale). See you all in 2018. EPC Committee

!

Dave

EPC Newsletter Please read the guidelines below for participating on our Face Book page

Nov / Dec 2017

Find Us on FACEBOOK

We welcome all EPC members, and other photographers on this site! The Facebook site is used to bring all interested EPC members together and share further photos that you have on this platform. It is also a site of sharing photographic events, tours and workshops; and if you should faithfully follow the set themes every 2 weeks it will improve your photography and possibly teach everyone some new tricks. Furthermore, it is also an opportunity to showcase photographic talents, as well as acquiring some bonus points towards EPC club ranking - each time a member wins a set theme. EPC Facebook Rules and Regulations: 1. EPC FB runs a challenge every 2 weeks with a set theme. 2. You may only enter a club evening photo once, thereafter you have to take other photos to fulll these challenges. 3. You may post as many photos as you like - as long as they fall into the category of 'Set Theme'. 4. Random posts are not allowed. 5. Members must post their entries on the EPC FB page, with a title and the set theme. 6. The top 3 photos, based on the amount of "Likes/Loves" on a specic given day, on the computer of the admin member in charge of this, will be sent to 3 EPC judges for a nal judging. The winners are announced on EPC FB and at the EPC club meetings.

7. 8. 9.

11)

12)

The winner receives a certicate, 1 Gold point, and 3 club points towards their EPC star ranking. The judges' decision is nal, and no further correspondence will be entered into. Each month the banner at the top of the page is changed, to include two example photos of the set subjects, with the dates for each so that people are clear on timelines and entry times. We would also like to use this site to share and invite members to any photographic outings, e.g. the Joburg Photowalker events, specic workshops that are currently being offered, Instagram meets etc.? Lastly, this EPC FB page is a page for people who are passionate about photography, and who wish to share their art. It has been created by the EPC Committee in order to promote a fun, alternative platform, where all aspects of photography are shared. Welcome, and enjoy this site!

The FACEBOOK Page will be managed by one of our members Clare Appleyard

FOCUS on Natasha Bird One could say that I have always been in a creative space and have worn many "hats" comfortably over my working career. Event planning and interior design are two such elds that I have thoroughly enjoyed but it is through my picture framing business that I came into contact with many talented photographers and artists and always hoped that one day I would be in a position to pursue photography more seriously. From my teens and well into my early twenties, I enjoyed capturing record images of our lives and holidays but the change happened when my daughter Kirsty-Lee was born in 1996 and I started wanting to capture more than just these happy snaps. As many mothers do, my passion simmered in the background while I set to the task of raising an only child. Photography became a trusted friend as it accompanied me on all the milestones and special events as my daughter grew from her rst steps to "big school", to lifesaving and swimming galas around the country. In what seemed like a blink of an eye, 13 years had passed and she had matriculated. As Kirsty-Lee entered her second year at Wits I knew the time was right for me to explore my interest in photography (and try escape the AUTO settings on my trusted Canon) so I enrolled in a photography school early 2016 and a few months later joined EPC too. This is where I mark the true beginning of my journey.

NATASHA BIRD

I have so much to learn and at this stage am not limiting myself to any one genre, but am rather embracing every learning opportunity, outing and workshop that presents itself. I LOVE club meets and especially the diversity of the images submitted. I have my little notebook with me and scribble down as many of the judges crits and suggestions that stand out for me and then revisit the winning images when the newsletter is published and try see what it is that makes these images worthy of being winnerswhat did the author see and how did the judge interpret it? In the past few months I am starting to recognize the style and work of club members before their names appear on screen and I look forward to the day when I nd my "style", that special something that makes my images recognizable. In two, short years I feel as though my soul has been set free and I am loving the creative journey I am now on.

FOCUS

Nov / Dec 2017

on Jorge Borralho

WHY I AM PASSIONATE ABOUT PHOTOGRAPHY. I am a visual person, my visual faculties in general dene how I interpret what I am confronted with daily, I view my surroundings somewhat differently, so I am told, always noting things like the horizons (where applicable), perspective and so on. Order, Relation and Place/Position in an image is what I typically look for and that inuences the composition of my images. I personally like keeping true to myself and what I enjoy, which draws me to natural subjects mostly, however I appreciate and enjoy all genres of photography and I am always keen to try something new. I am a doggedly determined individual with a passion to learn and try different ideas and will very often listen and learn from other photographers i.e. how and why they chose their applications to creating great images, then apply the knowledge I have acquired and try something different, much easier said than done I may add.

JORGE BORRALHO

Finding my own creative inspiration and more specically my unique distinctive style is always on the back of my mind these days and something that is a "work in progress" for me. To quote a famous American Photographer -"To me, photography is an art of observation. Photography is a form of artistic escapism for me and something I always look forward to. It's about nding something interesting in an ordinary place… I've found it has little to do with the things you see and everything to do with the way you see them." - Elliott Erwitt
