Chairmans Chat Our club is growing. We have quite a few new members and watching them progress and improve is really a highlight. One learns a lot from club evenings, but we need to do more. It is not about compe ng; it is about selffulďŹ lment and growth. Some are a ending courses, some doing self-study (even if informal tutorials on the web). We all strive to do be er. I feel the club should also contribute towards the learning experience above and beyond the club evenings. This is usually achieved through ou ngs, but is this enough? Workshops are arranged, but they are irregular and usually not that well a ended. Maybe the focus needs to change. This has led to some ideas coming forward that I think could be a lot more construc ve. On the short list, are workshops and shoots, the detail of which I will not go into here. By the me you read this, these ideas would have been discussed at a club mee ng and based on response, will be planned and implemented. What is good for the person is good for the club, and what is good for the club is good for the person. A win-win. Maybe in learning together, we can also get to know each other a li le be er. Un l next me, happy shoo ng.

Our Cover Story Image title: Sad little girl John Coumbias took this winning image in the Inner Mongolia, Tongliao City .....also known as the Ghost Village. Why was she sad we all wondered? "This little girl was not particularly sad, mongolian people have a look of solotude and tranquality about them, perhaps they are born with inner peace." John replied. Last year October John was invited to receive his award from the GPU(Global Photographic Union), they celebrated their 10th year anniversary and they asked all gold medal recipients to send one image that was awarded a gold medal.
One of John’s images he took in Newtown was selected for this prestigious exhibition. It was an opportunity of a lifetime and the chance to photograph this mongolian girl, presented on one of the daily excursion in the City of Tongliao while John was an Honored guest of the GPU John used his Nikon camera D 300 S with a Nikon 12 to 200 mm lens. He used the following settings: Apperture Priority, Setting: F8 Exposure compansation:-0.7 Auto White Ballance

FOCUS on Kenneth Kubheka Words and Images by Kenneth Kubheka Shooting manual with Canon 5D MII Started shooting at very age 0f 14 with a point and shoot which a gift from my dad. This was early years of 35mmf lm I would take pictures of my friends during our school trip and would get a fee for those not so clear pictures, some over exposed and others u nder, however the paying customer was happy to have some sort of memory captured on lm. This passion of photography stop when I had other interest that comes up in our teens. It was not long before I started to have interest in photography again and bought myself a DSLR and started to play around with it taking pictures in AUTO mode. I would watch videos of professional photographers and be amazed at the quality of their photos and whish that I could produce same. This I could achieve if I joined a camera school, but there was not time for that because of my demanding job. I got inspired to join a club by my son who told me that with networking with people of same mind, I should be able to get some form of basic information using
KENNETH KUBHEKA
the camera and I joined the Edenvale Photographic club. Since joining the club there has been much improved progress in my photography. I love Macro photography however with me starting out I don't have a particular style that I can say dene my photography yet. As long as I can go out and take some pictures, my fulllment is done.

FOCUS on Ted Kinsman Words and Images by Ted Kinsman
TED KINSMAN
My First Film Camera was a SLR Voigtländer Model Bessamatic CS, with a 50mm 1:2.8 Lens plus a 100mm :4.8 lens. This camera was given to me by my parents for my 21st birthday (1966). I still have this semi-automatic camera with a built-in light-meter and is still in good working condition. Later purchased a SLR Pentax lm camera.First digital camera was a Panasonic 1.3Megapixels 3xZoom used from Jan 1989 to 1990. Then I purchased a Sony Cybershot 3.3 Megapixels during 2000 that I still have and is still in good working condition. During 2006 I purchased a Canon D350 and ithen during 2008 I purchased a Canon D450 In March 2008 I purchased a Canon D50 that I still have. During February 2012 I purchased a Canon D7 MKI. This was replaced by a Canon D7 MKII during September 2017. I have a range of lenses including Canon 100-400mm 1:4.5-5.6 lens, a Canon 18-200mm, 10-22mm 1:3.5-1.5 lens, a Canon 60mm 1:2.8 lens, a Sigma 150mm-600mm 1:5-6.3 lens and a Sigma 70-200mm 1:2.8 lens. My favourite lens is the Canon 100-400mm. I like the pump action. I nd it ideal for capturing moving subjects and panning. My general walk around lens is the Canon 18-200mm 1:3.5-5.6 that has given me very good results. In 1966, I started with prints and slides. Still have a box full of slides. As a self-employed Engineering/Technical Loss Adjuster I used lm cameras and later digital cameras for claim investigation work. I retired at the end of 2015, but still investigate a few claims every month. For work I currently use my Cell Phone and a Panasonic Lumix DMC-TZ30 with a 20xZoom.I joined EPC during 2009 to
improve my photography skills. I saw an advert in the Edenvale Newspaper during 2009. Mario Braco was the Chairman at the time. Mario and I were in the same class from standard 6 to 10 at Queens High. My rst EPC entry was on the 23/3/2009. I was lucky to get a COM for a mountain scene with reections on the rst night. It took me approximately 7½ years to reach 5-Star Honours from August 2016. I joined the EPC Committee during July 2010 as the Magazine Editor. I continued as Editor up to the end of 2016 when this activity was taken over by Hanli Smit. From 2017 to current I have been the club Treasurer. I enjoy all the photographic genre but have achieved best results with landscapes. I love taking photographs that display movement but not all judges support this view who prefer sharp images throughout. I love panning with anything that is moving, a skill that is still improving. I must still make time to get more involved in motor sport and altered reality. For me photography is an activity I will continue until I am no long able to. Am always looking for the unusual photograph and hoping to capture something different. I believe I am well skilled with Photoshop but realise that the more I learn the more I still need to learn. Only touching the surface of this very powerful and fantastic program. Belonging to a photographic club motivates one to take and prepare for competitions. The judging of images is an excellent way of improving one's photographic skills. Also, one needs to see the work of other photographers to appreciate and improve. Once one is hooked on this hobby it is very difcult not to have your camera close by. What I regret is not getting involved with club photography earlier in my life. I have visit many beautiful places and taken many small size images that have no editing value. Santorini and other Greek Islands were some places that had fantastic photographic opportunities but not fully utilised. I have no formal training and rely on what I have learnt at the club and from colleagues, books, magazines and the internet. I am not particularly interested in Judging myself. I'm not comfortable in judging the work of others who may be far more experienced with a completely different point of view and preferences. Also, I have other interests and hobbies and spare time is a problem for me.
