Chairmans Chat And here we are again; a new year, a whole new set of challenges, but on the positive side, a new set of opportunities as well. It has started well. The rst club evening of the year was amazing. Firstly, the attendance was good; secondly, two new members and thirdly, the standard of photography was just awesome. I need to thank one and all for an evening of inspiring images. If the year goes up from here, we are in for a treat. As mentioned at the meeting, we plan on implementing some changes that I think will benet everyone. Once up and running, Photovault will make life easier for all. No more mislabelled, oversized and missing images. And no more loading from ash drives. Just plain easier all round. There will also be a club log, showing your total points for the year and how you rank amongst the other members. This is optional though. If anyone would not like to appear on the log, they can request to be excluded. We also have several interesting outings planned. As they are nalised, details will be published. I am sure that we can all grow and learn through these outings. The senior members are always there to guide and assist. Looking forward to seeing you all there. Compliments of the season to everyone. Wishing you all an extraordinary 2018 and may you achieve everything you set out to do.

The Cover Story Cover Image by Jorge Borralho Here Jorge is telling us how, where and with what equipment he created this winning image on our Cover It was taken last year in February at the Modderfontein Burnout, it was my second excursion there and I was experimenting using diffused ash from a distance, I turned the ash power right down to I think 1/16th of the power in order to add just enough ll light but to not blow out the reective tape on their suits, given the distance it worked out OK but using ash is not the easiest option for photographing thesscenes hence my comment about experimenting. I had a rather elaborate rig setup with an external power pack attached to my ash so that it recycled quicker +- 1 second between ashes, that's one of the advantages of using a portable power pack for ashes… The attached picture was taken with the following equipment and settings.
The equipment and settings I previously used follows:
Canon 1DX MKII Canon EF70-200mm f/2.8L IS II USM ( Shot at 70mm from the far "embankment" side ) Canon Speedlite 600EX-RT ( Powered at 1/16th strength, with portable diffuser attached and connected directly to external power pack for faster recycling etc. ) Godox Propac PB820 ( Connected directly to ash ) ISO 640 1/250th Shutter Speed ( Max Flash Sync on my camera ) Aperture - f8 ( Stopped down for greater depth of eld depending on distance may not be necessary ) Exposure Mode - Manual Metering Mode - Evaluative Shooting re in pitch darkness is not the easiest of things to do, especially since trying to capture ames without overexposing them while at the same time trying to balance the exposure to get distinguishable detail in the re-ghters is tricky at the best of times, my advice is go in with an open mind and experiment with settings, you may want moderate depth of eld (hence why I shot at f8), as far as overall exposure is concerned I tried pushing ISO to try balance the lighting on the re-ghters combined with low power diffused ash to get the detail I was looking for, rather elaborate setup which is not necessary under most circumstances, I have shot the same venue before under similar conditions without this type of setup and got pretty good results as well. The equipment and settings I previously used follows:
Canon 1DX Canon EF24-105mm F4 L IS USM ( Most of the time used in and around the 80mm mark ) ISO 500 1/250th Shutter Speed Aperture - f4 ( Wide open - sufcient depth of eld in this particular case ) Exposure Mode - Manual Metering Mode - Evaluative
So for all those Togs wishing to try their hand at this type of photography, I would recommend you start with similar setting to above and don't bother with ash unless you are looking for a specic effect like I tried on my last outing, more often than not ash will negatively affect your images in this scenario because of the highly reective material on the re-ghters suits. In this case the KISS methodology works best, keep it simple and if you need any further advice please feel free to reach out to the various highly experienced togs in the club, I am happy to assist you wherever and whenever I can. PS: For safety and other reasons you will not be able to get to close, bear in mind that the heat is intense even at a distance so having a medium zoom range is probably the best option for shooting these events.
