Chairman's Chat How far are you willing to go to get the shot? I am not only referring to waiting hours in a hide on a hard bench in freeIng cold weather hoping for something worthwhile, a crick in the neck from leaning into the viewď€ nder. I am not only referring to going into suspect areas; areas you would not probably go into were you not taking photos, areas that are not entirely safe, areas that come with some risk. I am not only referring to jostling to get a better position even if you spoil someone else's shot, being in places you shouldn't be, sneaking shots in places where photography is not allowed, trying to get the shot that no one else has. I am not only referring to unsanctioned baiting and staging in nature for that special shot, irrespective of the harm it could cause to animal and bird. I am referring to deliberately breaking the rules in the quest for recognition, manipulating shots that should not be manipulated; using shots in wildlife that are not wildlife shots. I am not saying that this is a common occurrence. I do not even know of anyone that has, but I know that it does happen. The guide here is your peace of mind; your integrity; after all, you are only cheating yourself. I doubt doping will ever be an issue in photography, but the ideal would be a medium without reproach, beyond question. Am I asking too much?

EDENVALE MEETING PLACE
WHEN DO WE MEET 2nd & 4th Wednesday of the month18h30 for 19h00
Edenvale Community Centre Cor.van Riebeeck & 2nd Street
COVER STORY By Hans van der Walt Night and street photography are some of my favorite genres because it allows me as photographer to shoot “what's there”; it decreases the critical planning phase and allows me to shoot using my gut feel and experience. I have done a lot of slow shutter photography in the past therefore all I had to decide is how much movement I wanted and expose correctly. I do not shoot for the club as I am the number one customer who has to be satised and for what it's worth I feel that if I'm happy the outcome should be good. I take my photos to the club to hear what the judges have to say. Often they see things from a different perspective and comment about it which is my prerogative to accept or decline. I never go to a club meeting with the idea to compete. It only leaves expectations which might leave me unhappy if not met. Good criticism is worth more than a piece of paper.
COVER STORY
Let me start off by saying that there has to be a distinct difference between a PHOTO and a SNAPSHOT.
The Win / COM is only a bonus to prove that my experience and effort is paying off.
Creativity can be a learned skill. You are only limited by your willingness to try.
Photography is an art and the camera is only one of the tools in creating the nal product.

FOCUS on Johann Harmse
Focus asked Johann Harmse a few questions about his craft
FOCUS: Why do you enjoy photography? JOHANN: I enjoy photography as it makes me relax and it also puts me into a different more relaxed frame of mind. FOCUS: What is your favourite genre? JOHAN:I love wildlife photography especially birds. Photographing birds are really challenging but they always make good photos. Something else that fascinates me is Macro photography of insects. This is something that I will try when I own a macro lens. FOCUS:When did you start taking photos? JOHANN: I started taking photos when my oldest daughter was born which is about 14 years ago and at that stage I only did baby photos (for obvious reasons)‌ After a couple of guest visits to the club I joined in April 2013 and then started to become serious about my photography.
Focus on Johann Harmse
FOCUS:Tell us what you carry in your camera bag? JOHANN:.I have a Canon EOS 5d MKiii body and mostly use my heavy Canon 400 2.8 lens with a 1.4x tele converter (for birding). I also own a Canon 24 – 105 lens but it is not good for bird images so it stays in the bag... FOCUS: What goals or targets do you have for your future in photography. JOHANN:At this stage I'm just trying to become a better wildlife photographer, but the main aim is to one day become a well-known name in wildlife photography. FOCUS: Is there a photographer (famous or not) that you admire and why. JOHANN:To be honest I don't really search the www, so I'm not aware of the big names in wild life photography. I do however have someone that inspires me greatly, which is Jorge Borralho with his wildlife / bird images.

JULY 2018
Ballen on Film is a retrospective exhibition showcasing nine lms of which Roger Ballen was either the subject, the inspiration, the writer, producer or director. It documents his development as he moved from photographing the exterior to the interior psyche; from straightforward photographs to all-out stage productions with props and drawings; and from documentary photographer to music video director for Die Antwoord. The common denominator in all the lms is an aspect of Ballen's work that is sometimes overlooked, a dark humour (especially apparent in the almost whimsical Theatre of Apparitions). Yes, the lms are disturbing and violent and haunting, but also hypnotic and comical. Ballen says of his images that they take you to a world that has for many been inaccessible. The question is, do you want to enter this world? Come and decide for yourself. FotoZA is elated to show all nine lms together in one space for the rst time. Along with posters, catalogues and books, there will also be limited edition Ballenesque skateboards available for purchase. Yes, skateboards.
Quotes "Everything in Ballenworld is out-of-kilter, makeshift, shadowy and unreal, including the human beings" Sean O'Hagan, The Guardian "… Roger Ballen has long been excavating and creating parallel worlds. His theater of photography probes the psyches of man and animal and the anomalies of earth." Barbara Rose ArtNews "My pictures are not like anyone's. They have nothing to do with any particular society; they have more to do with the human mind-the subconscious mind."
