Chairman's Chat th
Our 4 Salon was a great success for the club. Not only did we have the most number of entrants from a club, but I was really surprised by the number of ď€ rst time entrants. I hope this is the start of a new and exciting journey for all of you. All in all, I think we achieved what we set out to do. Firstly, to promote photography in the club and in general, to push members to achieve more. Secondly, to get the name of Edenvale Photographic Club out there; to show people that we are a club that is worth knowing, a club worth joining. And thirdly, to strengthen our ď€ nancial standing to carry us forward; to enable us to arrange outings and functions; to return to the members what they have put in. I would encourage you all to continue to enter salons. Even if you were not successful. In fact, especially if you were not successful. Look at the catalogue (download link in this newsletter on page 17). Study the images. Determine what makes them great. Learn from them. Seek advice from the senior members. They are very eager to assist and guide. Till, next time.

Our Cover Story and Winner of Special Subject This photo was taken by Gary Peck at a place called Festival City in Dubai. It is of the Business Bay Bridge that crosses The Dubai Creek (Now the Dubai Canal). I took it with my small mirrorless Sony Nex-7 with the Sony 16-55mm pz lens. Focal length: 16mm ISO: 400 Aperture: f22 Shutter Speed: 30 seconds on Tripod White balance: Manual
I saw the location in the day time a few days before and went back at night. I was the only person there. It was a fairly still and cool winter's night (that's about 29 degrees in Dubai hehe).
I was so excited to be doing night photography for a change, and the city is so safe you can just focus of experimenting. This was the last shot of about 29 attempts.
Everything just clicked.

FOCUS on Valerie Sampson Valerie Sampson “I can snap at any time”
words & images by Valerie
VALERIE SAMPSON
I was introduced to photography at the age of twelve, when my dad gave me a Kodak Box camera and I snapped away at everything on our farm in Rhodesia. I still have some of those photographs. To take candid shots of my children, I later purchased a Kodak compact, (we all have to start somewhere). My next purchase was a Pentax point and shoot, which I loved for it's panorama shots. I took this with me to Disney World on a scrapbooking convention, in Orlando Florida, U.S.A. 2003. Micky Mouse enchanted me so, that I just couldn't stop clicking and ended up buying another 17 spools. Well, I was most probably never coming this way again. My hubby greeted me with a big smile when I arrived back home, but it soon disappeared when I unpacked 22 rolls of Film, to be processed. I did enjoy making a couple of scrapbooks of my trip. This was the signal to migrate to a digital camera, which was a Canon Rebel DSLR, on which I managed to wear out the shutter in a couple of years and that was on the auto button (I had this notion that DSLR lasted forever)! Armed with a new 40D and feeling excited, but also anxious, I enrolled at Get-Pix Photo school in Benoni 2008, where I learnt about the photographic triangle and a whole new journey began. Everyone there was so kind and patient and I quickly grew to love true photography. Once on a student shoot at the Nan Hau temple in Bronkhorspruit, I was so absorbed looking through the Lens, in a world of silent fascination, that I didn't realize that everyone had disappeared and I was locked in, behind the gate, how embarrassing! I have since progressed to an EOS 5D mark lll, via my 50D, which I still enjoy and a 7D. I use mostly my 70-200mm, Macro 100mm and 85mm Lenses. For landscapes I have a 14mm wide angle. My favourite genres are Macro, Baby photography, which prompted me to start a small home studio, complete with built-in backdrops and softbox lighting. It can take 3 hours to complete a newborn shoot. Patience is soon learnt, as baby rules and it is important to have mom at ease as well. It's just too easy to totally lose all track of time whilst I am playing in my studio.I have been a member of Edenvale Photographic Club for almost 2 years. It has been a pleasure to meet so many talented photographers and our guest judges, who have inspired me by so generously sharing their knowledge. One important point, which has helped me, is to look all the way around the edges of my frame for anything that may distract the viewer away from your subject. Looking ahead, my goal is to expand my photographic abilities, by practicing and trying new techniques. I would also like to have the opportunity of experimenting with one of the latest mirrorless cameras which are becoming more popular. Should I ever be asked by an up and coming photographer, or advice, I would say: Don't lose sight of your 'vision' and your 'why'. In the words of Kristin Martz "We lose ourselves in the things we love - we nd ourselves there too."

Article from the PSSA magazine “Image”
The secret of Fashion Photography is... Planning, Planning and more Planning The Real Secret of Fashion Photography is……planning, planning…and more planning. As an Artist I truly enjoy the genre of Avant Garde Fashion Photography My Graphic Design and Fashion Design training comes in very handy during my image making process. Fashion photography should convey the essence of the Theme or Trend you are wanting to portray. Your direction and guidance is very important, often the props and accessories need to be out of the ordinary to make the image interesting. You need to convey your goal to your model in order for her to act condently and reect what you as the creative photographer dreamt up. In the commercial world you have an Editor, Art director, stylist and many assistants that conceptualize a magazine or advertising shoot, as an amateur photographer you need to fulll multiple roles. Fashion Photography is all about clothes and beauty, so pull together your resources and talents. I make most of my props and outts myself using anything from a plastic placemat to head bands and old broken jewellery pieces

My Daughter and Sister are both passionate about photography and they make for wonderful assistants. I often do the make up of the models but when I plan too many images, my sister Lilly van Niekerk is a very accomplished hair and make up artist. When I plan a big shoot, I start out with a shot list for myself and the make up artist. ie: soft and feminine…building up to dramatic and lastly end with the most messy style of hair and make-up. When you plan an Avant Garde fashion shoot the best is to start with a detailed story board or list of the nal images you need to achieve. Firstly, give every image a name or a heading, then in a column next to the title make a list of the props and garments you need for every image Lastly make a list or tear out some samples from a magazine to show your model ideas of different poses, suitable for the concept. This also helps your model to get into your head as posing could be tricky if they do not know what you want to achieve. The studio is ideal for this genre as you can control and stabilize your lighting conditions. I use a very simple set up of two soft boxes and sometimes a snoot just to add a sparkle in the model's eyes.
To create the mood and theme I often build the garment onto the model. I love fabric and you will nd almost any colour tulle or netting in my studio and large volumes of Taffeta and Satin materials in all thinkable colours. Often I start out by building a headpiece before I know where it will eventually t into a theme. I also paint my own background images on A2 canvas boards and then use it in the layers and overlays when I create the nal images. Jewllery Photography is another fashion genre I am passionate about, more of my work can be seen at www.hanlismitphotography.com
